A/N: Hey, I really wanna know who these anons are or if they’re the same person so I can thank you for these requests!!!! Sorry if this feels rushed or anything. I will happily rewrite it next week if requested. I’ve been sick since Sunday and I feel like trash :P

Ever since he came back, he’s been… off. His calloused fingers, his eyes, his voice, all once so familiar, now somewhat foreign.

But he’s your Crosshair, he always comes around. You’re his girl. This is no different. Right? And, he always comes back. It’s only been a few hours since the Marauder landed on Padu’s upper level, your home, at the crack of dawn. You were roused by that familiar chime on your comlink.

What the hell, Hunter, you thought when you woke. Couldn’t he wait a few more hours until your alarm went off?

He couldn’t, which you now know.

You met the batch while they were on leave a few years back, fell in love with that tall, lanky sniper of theirs. Once Order 66 happened, Hunter advised you to come with them since Crosshair wasn’t the man you met anymore.

You found Pabu, where you settled down while the boys didn’t. Could you blame them, though?

“Stop staring at me like that, Cross,” you say as you cook him breakfast in your warm kitchen, feeling his gaze dig holes in the back of your head as he sits at the island.

“I’m sorry… I just can’t…” he pauses, swallowing. “I can’t believe you actually waited for me.”

“How could I not? You’re you. No matter what Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum say,” You turn, about to scrape the eggs onto his plate when you see his watery eyes. Those dark irises that usually pierce into people’s souls now desperately gaze into your own.

“I… I did a lot of bad things. Why do you still love me?” He whispers as you slowly put down the pan of eggs. You step around the island to embrace the sniper, his face buried into your sternum.

“Shhh… You didn’t have a choice, back at Tantiss.” His shaky hands lock around the fabric of your shirt. He doesn’t make any sound, just lets the tears stream down his narrow face, catching on his stubble.

“That doesn’t answer my question, love.”

You sigh, cupping his tear stained face in your soft palms. “I loved you during the war, loved you when you left on missions, I loved you when you joined the Empire. This is no different. You’re mine, I’m yours.”

His eyes widen ever so slightly as he gazes up at you, for once.

“How ‘bout we get some food, real food, in you and then we’ll talk?” You softly ask, pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead.

“Yeah… Yeah, okay.” He nods and you let him go to slide the eggs onto his plate. Watching him eat, you see the muscles working in his jaw as he chews, his temporalis bulging with each bite.

You haven’t seen him since… Kamino. You begged, pleaded for him to join the batch. You remember how he declined and begged for you to join the Empire, they’ll understand, he said.

He finishes eating and you scoop up his plate, turning away to put it in the sink. When you turn around, he’s gone off to your bedroom. You follow, thinking, I bet he hasn’t slept in a while. I mean, really slept.

He stops in the doorway of your room, turning back to you. He quietly asks, “Can I…”

“You don’t need to ask me for anything. What’s mine is yours.”

You sit against your headboard, his head in your lap. Before, you used to card your hands through his silver curls. Now… You make due with caressing his growing follicles, careful of his lumpy, dented scar.

His hands tremble as they lie against your knee. You tap his fingertip.

“Are you scared?” You ask.

“What? No, why?”

“Your hands.”

“Oh… It just came one day.”

“Tell me… What happened?” You tenderly take his shaking hand in your own and you run your fingers over his too-short nails. Hemlock must’ve had them cut so he wouldn’t claw someone’s eyes out.

Poor Cross… Hemlock’s dying for this.

“You remember the shadows?”

“Mmhmm. The clone assassins.”

“He… Hemlock tried to recondition me into one… I was tested…” He doesn’t have to finish his explanation.

You’re quiet for a beat before you say, “I’m sorry, Cross…”

“Don’t be. You couldn’t do anything.”

“You know, a friend of mine has tremors, too. We can try exercises to… help cope, if you’d like,” you say, pressing your thumb pad down onto his knuckles for a gentle massage.

“I’ll give it a shot, love,” Crosshair says, rolling onto his back to look up at you.

“I love you, Crosshair.”

i don't want to take up too much space or add negativity here by talking about it, but i do want to touch upon it.

this fandom is difficult. it's difficult in a way it never should have been, and it is nearly impossible to engage with it interactively in a way that doesn't cause you any harm.

and i think the thing i've been coming to terms with recently, is that i can't engage with it how i have been without causing harm in a general sense - especially over on tiktok.

there's a kind of complacency at the moment. complacency in fandom etiquette yes, but the main thing is JKR, and the complacency people have fallen into when it comes to her. when it comes to the tours, the merch, the REBOOT. there's a complacency.

and it's reached a point where,,, there isn't much to do about it.

because my account there has always been talkative - i started talking over there purely to talk about my thoughts and share my interests, and it gradually became more educational. which was fine when it started, but it's not anymore. it's not when it's no longer fun for me, and when it's turned from talking about fandom to defending my place in it. to educating people on why my life matters more than official HP content.

and most discourse? i'll talk about purely because i find it interesting, and then i'll move along. but i can't move along from the reboot and general jkr stuff because i'm trans outside of fandom as well as in it.

i can talk about how it feels to be trans in this fandom right now, and then i turn my phone off, and there's bills to pay. there's increasingly high hrt prices, there's routine blood tests that the nhs won't do for my heart condition, there's a road in my town i can't walk through because someone pulled a knife on me, there's law after law after law being debated, funded, and approved, there's opportunities i've been denied and necessities i've been denied because of my identity.

and i can't turn that off.

and it gets harder to separate the two. it gets harder to separate fandom and real life when i'm coming to a place that should be a form of escapism and hearing people talk about supporting JKR, so i counteract that and explain why we shouldn't, and then i'm directly impacted once the app is closed. i can't turn that off, and i can't feel right engaging in it.

and i think that's the sad thing. i know @sophsicle did a post on this recently, but once fandom and real life start mixing, it's so much harder to engage here because we are responsible. and i can't ethically (or healthily for myself) post about this fandom on tiktok when it's to blame for the complacency we're seeing. and it is to blame. it's the comments on fancasts videos, it's the promoting of jkr's universe in random comment sections just because people "look like" the marauders, it's the reposting of the reboot or official hp pages when they talk about marauders and it's so much more and it's just,,,, impossible.

and i sound like a broken record because for MONTHS i have been talking about this. for months i have been talking about the harm this will cause and a couple of months ago i said that if things don't start changing, you're going to see creators taking steps back.

and i think the most upsetting part, is that i explain this. i explain how important this space has been for my stability and my confidence, how it has been the biggest part of my life and i don't feel comfortable anymore and,,, the majority of the messages so far are "what's going to happen to the fic rec sheet?" "should i download all the fics on your account?" "what about xyz?" etc etc

and it's just,,, content over individual. whether that's the reboot over trans people, or videos over the person, it's always content.

idk man. i don't want this to be too negative but this space needs to work on its support. it needs to stand stronger against jkr, and it needs to stop calling itself inclusive in the meantime i think.

this has been overly negative but fandom isn't. a solid 90% of my time on tiktok has been lovely. i made 18k new friends, gained so much confidence (this is the only time i've ever been able to overcome my stammer and speech impediment and that's everything), raised 7.7k for my top surgery and just,,, it's overwhelmingly positive.

my bubble is good. and the space i have crafted is safe and lovely.

but i don't feel right posting on there anymore. not when wider fandom is a big part of why JKR is suddenly back in the picture, and we can "separate her from the reboot" (we can't).

this is very long so i'll end it with this:

it does not alleviate your guilt to engage with her in a "marauders way". if anything, it is worse to do that and post about it when this space prides itself on inclusivity.

you are not reclaiming this space, you are making it harder for those at risk to engage.

and you need to take "fuck jkr" out of your bio until your actions match your words, regardless of who is casted in a reboot that shouldn't be happening in the first place.

been noticing something in the fandom lately well not lately I would say for the past couple or more years that the side characters who were considered underrated started getting more and more recognition which is a good thing not complaining. But as these side characters appreciation sky rocketed, Harry's on the other hand kept on declining ??? Its a little mind boggling to me that people are able to love the mc's bffs, mc's parents, wife, previous love interest, enemies, teachers so much...but not the mc himself ??? Weird that it almost feels like these folks dodged around harry while reading HIS story !!

I'm glad you like my blog and I think there are more of us who love Harry than you might think.

I'm not, like, an expert on fandom culture in the HP fandom since I wasn't really active in it until recently, and even now I kinda have my bubble that likes Harry a lot. I mean, yes, there's the New Marauders Fandom that is notorious for mischaracterizing basically everyone and diminishing the og story for the sake of their own fanon, but I think the dislike of Harry's character in favor of side characters is older than that in the fandom. Like, I remember "Harry is so lame" and "Harry isn't that powerful" and "Hary's just Expeliarmus" talk from way back in the day like a decade ago. So, I don't think it's really new.

If I had to guess at a culprit to blame, I'd blame the movies.

Becouse movie Harry is all these things:

he has no personality (he has none of Harry's sass and anger and wit)

he's passive

he's lame

he's weak (both emotionally and magically)

and worse than all of the above — he's boring.

Like, everything the people who hate Harry say about him is true for movie Harry, but couldn't be further from the truth when it comes to his book counterpart. This is why Harry's characterization has always been the movies' greatest sin for me and I hope the new HBO tv show gets it right (though my hopes are pretty low). Like, I could forgive certain inaccuracies if they get the vibe of the world and the characters right — but movie Harry is a hate crime against me personally.

And while characters like Ginny and Ron also suffer in their movie portrayal, characters like Hermione, Neville, Luna, Draco, and Snape got interesting portrayals (if inaccurate to the books) which resulted in movie fans liking them more. Like, I don't think you could read the books without coming to the conclusion Harry is a great character, so... I'm blaming the movies and fans who only read fanfiction/watch the movies and never touched the books. Or ones who read the books a decade ago and don't necessarily remember anything from them and only know the fanon, that's also a possibility.

Aquarius. Autistic. French. INTJ. Queer. The real Slytherin prince. Definitely, and undoubtedly, the best Black family member and best Marauders era character.

2. Narcissa Black

I used to just see her as Lucius Malfoy's enabling wife and preferred her second-older sister, but I started liking Narcissa more since I recently started getting into nobleflower and realizing how similar she is to me/Regulus. She's also blonde and gives off black swan vibes.

3. James Potter

Mexican. My favorite Marauder from day one. The Marauders' sun and everyday Ladybug. If my future husband isn't like James, then I don't want him.

4. Sirius Black

Gorgeous. Scorpio. Loved James more than anything. The brightest star.

5. Barty Crouch Jr.

His backstory gives off Félix Fathom and I love him for it. Also - his fancasts are all so gorgeous.

6. Pandora Rosier

I ranked Pandora higher than Evan only because it's almost half-canon in the Marauders fandom that the spell that caused her death was to bring back Regulus. Also, she gives off Alice in Wonderland vibes.

7. Evan Rosier

Regulus's friend and the blond Slytherin pretty boy of the Marauders era.

8. Andromeda Black

It's a crime that Andromeda is ranked so low on this list since she's the OG black (no pun intended) sheep in her generation of the Black family. I also think that she spent her Hogwarts years dismantling her family's ideologies and influenced Sirius to be pro-Muggle from a young age.

9. Dorcas Meadowes

INFJ. Mermaid-coded. Lost all of her Slytherin skittle friends (except for Pandora) because three of them became Death Eaters. Lost her girlfriend to the Death Eaters. Faced Voldemort alone because she had nothing to lose. Voldemort himself was terrified of her.

10. Alice Fortescue

Dark brown curls. Gryffindor. Italian. Quidditch player. Had a thing with Narcissa. Shares a name with one of my favorite literary characters.

Hi!!! What r ur thoughts on Snape???🙏

Hiii :D oh this will be fun!

I don't mind him actually! I think he's ONE of the most interesting characters in Harry Potter (Golden Era and during the 70s). I like him much more as a teenager, being a snarky and awkward kid navigating his social surroundings. I'm more sympathetic to him as a teenager (+During First Wizarding War) but I'm a little on the fence when he's a teacher (how he treated Neville and Hermione). I can understand why people dislike him for being a bad teacher.

I will be honest, I definitely think Snape is a HIGHLIGHT example of the Fandom's hypocrisy. There is a constant demand for morally grey characters in the fandom and yet when they are presented with a CANON morally grey character, they cower basically (and I mean this with Dumbledore too!).

I also do think he is demonized a lot, especially his friendship with Lily because it's the fandom's way of making up for the lack of women in every way shape, or form. Everyone is very careful about Lily (Jegulus shippers) and they fear portraying her in any negative manner because they think if they do they will get called misogynistic. So they put everything onto Snape.

If you ask me, his friendship with Lily is very complicated and I don't think either had a mass blame on the falling out. Snape thinks she was choosing his bullies over him and Lily thinks that Snape didn't think of her very highly, which makes it worse by the fact that she was muggleborn. I don't blame Snape for never getting over his hate of James, what the Marauders did to/allowed what happened to him was fucked up.

I was constantly picked on/made uncomfortable/chased around the school by a boy years ago and the adults didn't really hear me out, to this day I still feel uncomfortable. And it's been like what 7 years or so? Shit sticks and it is obvious nothing was done about it.

However, it is wrong of Severus to take it out on Harry! That I won't deny. Like I said before, I don't blame people for not liking him as an adult. It's just when they condemn a teenager for this?? Ehhhhh...

He as a character is interesting. I see him as a very "child imagination" character, going from an abused and forgotten (using that word loosely) kid to a war hero basically. It's almost like it's what everyone imagined as a kid. I think he definitely fantasized about something like that as a child. Being an abused boy and wanting out. And thinking back on it when he was dying.

When he was starting Hogwarts, I hc that he was very fidgety. Skining-picking habit, twitchy, not staying still, picking at his lip, and was physically all over the place. His friendship with Lucius can actually be pretty sweet. Severus cools out the longer he goes to Hogwarts.

 okay so basically in Harry Potter 3 the Marauders map was introduced and it was written by four people right? and one of them was Harry Potter's dad, James Potter and the rest of them were his friends which are Sirius (Harry's godfather, who escaped prison in HP3) Remus (the DADA professor in HP3) and Peter (the bad guy who actually betrayed harry's parents and sold them to Voldemort then blamed it on Sirius, then helped Voldemort come back to power.)and the Marauders is based off of their time in school and being BFFs, because they were, and all of their friends and the map and the whole peter-betraying-james-blaming-sirius thing is basically the only Canon or like real thing that it is based off of. I mean some other things are found in the books but everything else is made up by the fandom because we are all delusional in a good way. so like the idea that Sirius and Remus are dating is not actually in the books but that's pretty much agreed upon and the idea that James and regulus are dating is one thing that people ship, other people ship James with Lily which is Harry's mom. what else oh all of their friends are people that have only been mentioned like once in the books like Mary, Marlene, Alice who is Neville's mom, Dorcas, Evan, Barty, they're all either people who were mentioned in the books to be in the Order of the Phoenix or who were mentioned to be Death Eaters but most of them are only literally mentioned once, but we just kind of took them and ran with it. so most of the Marauders fandom is just head cannons it's not actually in the books. some people will write about like Sirius and Remus like in book four or five - their reunion and what that might look like and then some people take the idea of 'the prank' and write about that which is a time where Sirius told Severus Snape about Remus being a werewolf (he is canonically a werewolf) but really that's the only thing... and I wrote this with voice to text so that's why it's so long and rambling. Yeah.

I'm relatively new to the HP/Marauders fandom, but already Jegulus has a CHOKEHOLD on me. I'm sitting here crying thinking about two characters that probably never met. I'm blaming it on the amazing fic writers who put this ship in my head and pulled me in so quickly.

I saw a post that said "Fortnight" from TTPD was Regulus about James who had married Lily and I'm SCREAMING.

From my own mind, I decided "Down Bad" was James about Regulus if they had a relationship before Reg joined the Death Eaters.

"I'm down bad crying at the gym" - okay James is a himbo and likes to work out but imagine Reg had joined him for a few sessions and was whispering encouragement to him while he lifted or whatever and now James in the gym alone. I'm not crying, you are.

"Teenage petulance" - they were teens when they dated, easy enough

"Down bad, waking up in blood" - okay this I imagine James wakes up in the morning and his knuckles are bloody and bruised because he had either 1) fought with someone because they were talking shit about Reg or 2) he was just so angry that he punched a wall

"Staring at the sky, come back and pick me up" - I imagine they had a lot of late night dates in the astronomy tower AND b/c Regulus is named after a star, James looks to the sky to try to get a glimpse of anything related to Reg

"Did you take all my old clothes? Just to leave me here naked and alone" - okay this one! (the timeline isn't perfect but I don't care okay just pretend) Reg took one of James' quidditch jerseys and so when James is getting ready for a match, he's sat on the bench in the locker room when he realized it was gone and it really fuckin hits him that Reg is gone

"cosmic love" and "heaven struck" - Reg is all of James' stars and the heavens

"I loved your hostile takeovers" - Reg and his friends doing anything bitchy around the marauders

"Encounters closer and closer, all your indecent exposures" - every time they snuck into a closet or classroom to make out

"How dare you think it's romantic, Leaving me safe and stranded" - Reg broke up with James because he knew the Blacks would force him to join the Death Eaters and he didn't want to pull James into that

Some people will say there’s no way James and Remus were not at least a teeny bit in the joke. Do you think there’s truth in Snape’s claims? It seems that a lot of his readings on the Marauders are true, and Harry just refuses to believe it because he hates Snape and likes Sirius. Could it be true that James got cold feet, or simply wanted to come out as the hero?

One could argue that Remus, who chronically needs to be the good guy, would never agree to something that dangerous - but he did agree to many escapades from the Shack, which also endangered students and villagers. How far would he let his friends go before he challenges them?

I don’t personally believe this, whenever I try to puzzle it together like that, I find that it ultimately undermines the characters, specially Sirius’s and James’s. It erases Sirius vindictive recklessness and daredevil edge and replaces it with uncharacteristic cold calculation. James also has a moment that shows a lot of his core - his black and white morality (that this time absolutely pointed to the right direction) leading him to risk his own life to save another.

It’s a theory on the fandom that sounds interesting to explore and I’m curious to find someone who can convincingly back it (it’s just gnarly because one tends to get roped into very aggressive marauders vs snape discourse)

I mean I think it's fairly obvious that it was meant to be Sirius's idea, and that neither James nor Remus were involved. I don't think Snape is supposed to be a reliable source of information about the Marauders, as he is heavily biased against them-- though obviously, there is more truth in what he says about James than what Harry initially realises, but like many things the truth lies somewhere in between both versions.

Going back to the Shrieking Shack convo, Remus says this:

Remus says that James had "heard what Sirius had done," implying that James didn't know what Sirius was planning until it was already underway. I mean of course Remus might be lying, but I find this unlikely. I think this version of events aligns pretty well with what we know about James in that he's brave and self-sacrificing, and from a young age (hogwarts express scene) he does display a strong sense of very black and white morality. As you implied, this often manifests in negative ways, such as bullying Snape, but also I think it wouldn't have allowed him to stand by while someone, even Snape, was in mortal peril.... let alone participate.

To me it's obvious that Snape would assume that Remus and especially James were in on it. He doesn't really know who they are as people aside from cruel bullies, he's programmed to think the absolute worst of them, which to be fair is very understandable. If it was me, I'd probably believe James was in on it too. Or at least I'd want to believe-- I think there's a chance that Snape knew, very deep down, that James wasn't involved, but blaming the boy he hates is easier and less painful than having to be in his debt. Obviously Snape isn't going to want to owe James anything, much less his life. There's truth to Snape's vision of James, but he's quite clearly strongly biased against him, just as Remus and Sirius are biased in his favour. So no, Snape isn't an objective or reliable source when it comes to the Marauders and especially James-- why would he be?

I think if the truth had been that James was involved or that he only did it to help his friends, this information would have been given to us from a more reliable source than Snape. I've written about this before, but the fact that Dumbledore immediately compares the life-debt between Harry and Peter to the one between James and Snape to me implies that James saving Snape was not meant to be a selfish act. Narratively, the way Harry acts that night is supposed to reflect the way James would have acted, hence 'Prongs rode again,' hence Harry mistaking himself for his dad.

Later, we obviously learn things about James that are less admirable, but that doesn't mean that the above doesn't still hold true. James is meant to be both things, it's what makes him a complex character-- neither the flawless hero he's made out to be by his friends, nor the irredeemable villain that Snape sees him as.

Something that might have been interesting (and I really wish I'd thought of this for my fic honestly) is for James and Sirius to casually joke about feeding Snape to Remus, and while James only ever saw it as a joke Sirius took it at face value, assuming that James would approve when he actually set it in motion.

As for Remus (sorry this is so long already but I realised I haven't addressed the bit about Remus) even though it's still incredibly risky and irresponsible I think there's a difference between him wandering the grounds with two large animals, and deliberately sending someone into an enclosed area with a werewolf. Obviously it's absolutely insane that they'd let Remus out at all, but they were assuming (foolishly, perhaps) that it would be deserted at night and that Sirius and James could keep Remus in check. The risk is abstract, and seemingly they were proven right, as there were never any incidents-- although there could have been, obviously. Still, sending Snape down the willow by himself, deliberately putting a specific person in danger, is imo on a different level, and I think reading between the lines of Remus's fairly neutral explanation of the prank it's clear he doesn't approve. It seems INCREDIBLY unlikely that Remus was in on it, as it would have undoubtedly resulted in his expulsion, not to mention someone's blood on his hands.

choices, is like, the best fic ever, because it knows how to tell a story without justifying the things people do because of what happens to them. for regulus, for example, because he’s psychically abused and mentally abused(+ the yk sexual abuse and stuff), but it doesn’t excuse the fact that he did horrible things for himself. like when barty sexually assaulted mary and regulus found out and stopped it, but also hid the real culprit of the assault and blamed it on someone else, while also changing mary’s memories so the person regulus blamed it on was what she remembered. that was for himself, maybe a little bit for barty but mainly for himself. what made that so disgusting was that mary went through what regulus did, and yet he still helped cover it up.

regulus is not a good person. and james even said: “maybe he wasn’t a good person, but he tried to be” and he did try, but he also didn’t want to be a good person. he knew he was bad and he didn’t do anything to stop it.

you could argue that he did it all for sirius or james, but there was no reason for him to meddle in what happened to mary. he should’ve stopped it, yes, but he also should’ve turned barty in when they found out. he never should have invaded her mind like that, and he knows what it feels like to have someone in your mind too. yet he still did it. and i love regulus with all my heart, but we can’t pretend he didn’t do what he did in this fic.

he also became a death eater, which i know was forced by his mother or did it for sirius or whatever, but he was a wizard nazi. even if he didn’t believe in what they stood for, he still became one. people in the marauders fandom like to justify barty and evan(and don’t even get me started on how they treat bellatrix) and regulus for being wizard nazis because they were “going through a lot and evan and regulus were forced” but they still were. we can’t just forget that. and i love barty and evan too, but they were death eaters. and i know it’s fiction, but just because it’s fiction doesn’t mean we can ignore the bad things people do. and so in choices it doesn’t justify what he did or make him a good person, but it tells a story. regulus is human. he’s gone through hell and back, but instead of playing the hero he played the villain, or maybe the anti hero. people have to remember that.

i also love that choices ends with the line “from us so much will grow” because without them we wouldn’t have a harry potter. we could also talk about drarry and the whole slytherin x gryffindor pararrel, godric x salazar, monty x alphard, james x regulus, and finally harry x draco. we could talk about that, but i think the main intention of that line was that without james’s sacrifice harry and lily and also him would all be dead. we wouldn’t have a harry potter x draco malfoy ship. i just think that’s so beautiful.

we could also talk about the wolfstar, or the girls(because stan lily for not putting up with james’s cheating), or jily, or lucius malfoy(who is so evil and yet so interesting), or the badass that is cerci greengrass, or even how FUCKING sad it is, but this is getting to long, lol

You were in your room, where you’d been locked when they saw the royals coming. You hoped the Prince and Princess had come for you. Come to find you.

As the time went on, you watched as the two of them turned and they were about to get on their horses again, when you heard a very loud voice. For a moment, you couldn’t place it, and then you realised it was your own.

You were a little worried at first that your stepfamily wouldn’t let you go, but then you realised the two you were trying to get the attention of were royals and they could help get you away from here.

That's when you started yelling, wishing they could hear you but unsure if they could.

Thankfully, it worked and you saw them turn back towards the house. You saw James look up and see you. A small smile graced your face as he rushed over to his fiancé. You watched as your stepmother got slapped and the Prince moved towards the house until you couldn't see him anymore.

Within moments, you heard footsteps and you ran over to the door.

“Please help me,” you yelled. “I’m locked in here.”

“Step back, please,” you heard.

You moved far away to the other side of the door before calling back, “the doors clear.”

The door flew off its hinges as you screamed and two men rushed in. Two of the royal guards, if you were to guess.

“You’re requested downstairs by order of the Prince and Princess,” one of them told you.

You stood up shakily, before walking to the door. You turned to them. “Thank you.”

Both of them walked behind you as you walked downstairs. Once you got to the front door, you started feeling less shaky. You turned to the guards. “I know you’re not here to protect me, but can you make sure they don’t come near me? They’ll try to stop anything that could mean I leave them or actually live a happy life.”

They both nodded as you walked out and over to the Prince and Princess. You were feeling somewhat ashamed because you didn’t feel as amazing as you did at the ball. What if they weren’t here for you? What would happen to you then?

Before you knew it, you were standing in front of the royals, with both the guards still flanking you.

“Your highnesses,” you said as you bowed.

You saw Lily take a step forward taking your hand. “Can you please stand and look at us?” You heard what sounded like pleading in her voice.

You looked up, but it didn’t look like either of them fully recognised you. Who could blame them? You looked almost nothing like you did at the ball, not with all the dirt, grime and bruises.

They looked saddened at your appearance. James took your hand and he asked, “we’ve been trying to look for the one we found at the ball. They dropped this ring.” Lily held it out to show you and you instantly recognised it. “It’s a magical ring. It will only fit the person who wore it.”

“Can I please try it on?”

“That’s why it’s there,” Lily said. “Would you like to put it on yourself or do you want one of us to do it?”

You looked at your hand still being held by James. You looked up at Lily, “Will you please put it on for me?”

She picked up your other hand, liking having both of them touch you and hold your hands. She slid the ring on your finger. It fit perfectly, just like you knew it would and a light swirled around all of you.

“It is you,” James gasped, when the light went away. “When I saw you, I hoped it was.” He moved closer to hug you when you winced. He pulled back quickly, looking concerned.

Before he could ask anything, Lily did, “who hurt you?”

“Them,” you responded quietly. “They’re my stepfamily.” You’d never told anyone they hurt you and now, telling them, it felt like a weight lifted from your shoulders.

You moved closer to them, hugging them as they hugged you. James pulled away first, but only slightly, “Is there anything you want from inside?”

You leaned against him, “can I get new things?”

“Are these the only types of clothes you own?”

“Aside from what I was wearing at the ball, yes.”

“Then yes. These don’t look like they fit and aren’t suitable for a royal.”

You nodded. “There are a couple of things I want inside though. That outfit is one and a couple of my parents' things.”

Lily pulled back too and held your hand. “Of course you can. We’ll send a couple of our guards up with you.”

She left for a moment and you leaned into James, feeling his warmth and his arms around you. He kissed the top of your head and pulled back, taking your hands, bringing them up and kissing your knuckles.

When he moved your hands down, Lily had come back with two of their guards. “This is Royal Guards Rosier and Black. They’ll accompany you inside so you can retrieve your items.” She took your hand and kissed your palm. “We’ll be waiting here and dealing with them.” She waved her hand towards your stepfamily.

“Thank you.” You leaned over kissing her cheek. “I’ll be back soon.”

The guards followed you inside and you went to retrieve your items.

“Would you prefer to freshen up before going back downstairs?” one of them asked. You recognised the voice but couldn’t place it.

You hesitated. “Are you sure that they won’t mind?”

“They definitely won’t. They want you to be comfortable.”

You looked up this time. It was the same guard who spoke both times, but this time you recognised his voice. “Regulus?” Then you looked at the other guard. “Evan?”

They both smirked before bowing. “Your highness.” They stood back up.

You laughed, feeling free. Friendly faces everywhere today. You smiled at both of them.

“I’ll get my stuff and get cleaned up.”

“We will wait, your highness,” Evan told you. “They will definitely be willing to wait for you.”

Someone recently told me my writing style feels like a children's chapter book. Very nostalgic to early HP. And as I am reading The Heir and The Spare, Sirius' first year at Hogwarts (editing it, again!), I can see how right they are. It is super nostalgic. I hope as my characters mature, the writing style still works for them or I grow as a writer/editor in the next few months. But if you want to journey back to first year at Hogwarts with the Marauders, this fic is going to get you there. And all the subtextual Wolfstar... it makes me very happy.

Installment two, The Prince's Pact, which is told from Severus' POV is coming on December 21! For the Severus fans who don't want to read Sirius' installment (can't say I blame you BUT there are some Severus moments which I adore in THATS) there is a brief summary of The Heir and The Spare which you can find on AO3 here:

For the Marauders fandom who feel apprehensive about Severus' POV, know that Lily and Regulus play a huge role in The Prince's Pact. Also, less hate on Severus. He's awesome. And yes, James and Sirius come across as menaces from his POV.

And Severus fandom, less hate on the Marauders. They are immature tweens/teens. Entertaining but not necessarily moral compasses off which we should all base our worldview or behavior. Severus' moral compass doesn't exactly point due north either. Very much trying to build canon adult Severus through his teenage experiences. Might fail miserably. Only time will tell.

Put it all together and at a minimum it sure makes an entertaining story.
