and so we have come to that time of the year where we ask ourselves, “is wyb gonna be on sdc?” and it is a valid question. as for general confirmed news on the show, they have released their season 6 poster and “theme” if you will. which is “unity” and as you can see “asia” and it was mentioned that there will be “foreign captains”. they also have a series of events which are international dance competitions in diff cities in china. i would imagine as a prelude to the show itself and have invited season favorites.
If Anon has access to Weibo, then following the SDC account will be their best bet to get legit news on the show. If anything is confirmed, that will be the first place they will share it.
Now let me share my thoughts on Yibo @ SDC 6. because i have thoughts.. many many thoughts…
We have no idea what WYB’s next project is in between now and Mermaid shooting. Most likely One & Only promo but that’s also cutting it close to Mermaid’s plan end-of-July start. But I believe that WYB will participate in SDC6 in whatever shape or form. Whether that’s a guest captain on an episode like what Vanness did last season or a performance for the Season Finale. WYB is well loved by the creator/director + scriptwriter & crew of this show. The audience also adores him so i’m pretty sure they will do what they can to make him a part of it. Dancing is a big part of WYB’s life so i doubt he will drop a chance to atleast pop in. Maybe even “host” the season’s “team building/talent show” will be okay with me.
++ One & Only, which is his next movie release, is based on break dancing. A lot of the featured characters & extras are in the SDC circle so that will definitely be promoted on the show — and well, WYB will appear.
The next big speculation right now, supplied by 🍉 are the foreign captains. Every year. This happens. The names “released” are Rain, Lisa & Taeyang. With people being the most excited about Lisa. I personally wanna see Rain tho. However they are all from KOREA ( Lisa is from thailand but well, you know what I mean ). These are people that were allegedly “invited” to join. If the theme is really “Asia” then they should get mentors & guests from different asian countries and not just one. We know Korean Acts are famous and have more international impact — which I think is beneficial, because it will expose WYB to a different audience. More people will know him. This is a good opportunity, cause if his movies continue to be released internationally, then he needs more support outside the Mainland.
THE DOWNSIDE THO is well, the captains that are supposed to bring that fresh audience and popularity are from 🇰🇷. The ban is no longer as strict as before but it’s still an unspoken rule. Days ago, the topic “is the korean wave coming back?” went on Weibo HS and the replies are very interesting. and by that I mean there was not a single positive comment even if i scrolled and scrolled. it was a mix of “don’t come here” / “ban them” / “i will continue to chase them online only but don’t come here.” etc. I also saw some people lamenting the fact that kpop acts before came to China for profit — then proceeded to talk shit about their country. The point is, there may be a chance that if SDC goes along with this K-Wave and WYB participates, there is a possibility that certain people will see it as promoting Korean artists and by extension Korean “values”. I wouldn’t want WYB anywhere near that kind of conversation. No. Accusations of being unpatriotic is a career killer that no one will survive. And we know how “hot” WYB is lately in the eyes of certain companies that wanna see him fall. There is definitely a risk/reward element here but I don’t think it’s worth it.
We will see in the next coming weeks. Whether WYB truly participates as a captain or whatever — I will always wish this show lots of success! 🙏🏼
Is there any news about sdc this year?
Lots of rumors, but nothing I'd call 'news'. There hasn't been anything credible said about DD yet, and I'm very skeptical of the other rumors I've heard. I guess we'll likely learn more in the next few weeks, as typically it starts filming in June/July I think.

Since I’m officially done with the main guides to Stray Kids, I figured I’d do a couple fun guides, just for, well, fun. I wanted to start off with the dynamics between the boys. I’ve already talked about the three main rachas (3Racha, Danceracha, Vocalracha), but I thought it would be fun to talk a little about each friendship. (If you want to see even more about them, I’m going to have a playlist related to each post, and I currently have a finished dynamics series!) (There is 28 different pairings in this group, so they have to be broken up into multiple posts, lmao)
This post contains the following dynamics: Bang Chan and Felix; Lee Know and Changbin; Lee Know and Seungmin; Changbin and Hyunjin; Hyunjin and Han; Han and Felix; and Felix and I.N.
*Sort of a disclaimer: Each pairing will have a little nickname/identifier attached to them. Most of them come from stays themselves, whether directly or indirectly, but some of them I kind of had to create on my own. They may not be super creative, but it is what it is, lmao
Bang Chan and Felix - “the aussie bros”
nickname is pretty obvious, lol. they’re both from australia
another ‘soulmate’ duo.
both boys have talked about how comfortable it is between the two of them and how they don’t have to be extra to show each other how much they care, they can just be. chan even stated that he wouldn’t be surprised if they lived together later on in life.
they clearly have a very special connection, i imagine being two aussie boys in south korea, far away from home without their families, helped make that bond stronger. i think chan has even talked about how he didn’t want felix to feel as lonely and depressed as he did, being so far from home, so he was there for him.
when felix was eliminated during the survival show, chan told him to come find him, that he would never leave him behind, and honestly, it makes me emotional just thinking about it
felix has mentioned, but i can’t remember where, that chan is like a real brother to him
chan is always telling felix how great his singing is and how much he’s improved. honestly, chan is just great at hyping up the other members.

Lee Know and Changbin - ‘the loud bunnies’
both of their skzoo characters are bunnies (even if changbin’s is mixed with a pig) and they are both loud. very loud. the loudest in the group, honestly
their love language is hand holding and food
completely unexpected. i never expected to love this duo as much as I do, but they may be my favorite friendship in the group
this is one of those duos that feels like we don’t see a lot of it. like, they’re more lowkey, a lot closer than we’d expect.
chan’s left and right hands. they help out with the other members a lot, and they also have a lot of affection and love for the other members.
there’s so much of them that’s been happening for this comeback, it’s wonderful
they both have each other as their phone backgrounds and it’s so funny and cute. that’s what clued me in that they might be closer than it seems. they have stated that they do this because it makes them laugh, and honestly, i bet they make each other laugh all the time
the romantics of the group, apparently (them and felix). the boys chose them, mainly lee know, as the most romantic, and i know they were kind of being silly and were talking about stay, but i’d like to think that lee know really is romantic, but like...lowkey romantic. and changbin just screams that he’s big on the romance, not gonna lie
they apparently fought a lot in their trainee/early debut days, but the other boys have stated that they would make up pretty easily

Lee Know and Seungmin - “the divorced couple”
we finally made it here, lmao
listen, don’t listen to these two dumbasses
they go on and on about how they ‘don’t fit’ or ‘don’t get along’, etc.
but they care about each other so much, it’s insane
seungmin literally cried an entire river when lee know was eliminated on the survival show, and although i don’t know the source, i’ve seen fans say he stated that lee know was his favorite hyung at some point
lee know has talked about how seungmin was kind to him in the beginning and how thankful he was for that, and while he teases and bugs him a lot, it’s clearly out of affection (once again, gotta mention that 9th episode again, since lee know wrote his letter to seungmin about how he was thankful to him for helping him adjust to trainee life.)
lee know also never shuts up about seungmin and finds ways to talk about him on the regular
arguably more alike than they will ever admit
despite appearances, lee know is the softie in this duo
but seungmin still cares a bunch, of course
they’re referred to as a divorced couple because of the popular sketch that the group did. there’s actually 2 videos: the original and the follow up they did for their 3rd anniversary. they’re really hilarious, and I highly recommend checking them out! It’ll also be helpful because the boys reference these two videos a lot, so watching them will let you in on some inside jokes)

Changbin and Hyunjin - ‘cuddle buddies’
this was the first duo that hooked me, honestly
and it’s mainly because of the thousand and one clips of these two being cuddled up together during lives and interviews (reason # 495904 why no one believes hyunjin when he says he hates skinship)
changbin will never shut up about how much he loves hyunjin and how wonderful he thinks he is, and that’s valid, honestly
changbin is one of the co-presidents of the ‘everyone loves hyunjin’ club.
he’s so obvious about it that the group teases him, lmao. you can see this in their recent video celebrating Chuseok. changbin selected hyunjin’s name for an activity, and although it was supposed to be kept a secret, everyone knew who he picked immediately, because changbin is not subtle
however, hyunjin is always like ‘no’ and it’s a hilarious dynamic
but he’ll be like ‘ew, no’ while being cuddled up to changbin at the same time
it’s clear that hyunjin find comfort in changbin and, if im not mistaken, they’ve been close since trainee days, but i can’t remember where i heard that
changbin definitely makes hyunjin laugh a lot, but again, hyunjin laughs a lot in general, lol

Hyunjin and Han - ‘enemies to lovers’
got into a lot of arguments as trainees, or at least, didn’t get along very well. han has been very open about being difficult and angry when he was younger and he tended to have issues with communication. they talked about their ‘feud’ in their 2 kids room episode and stated it was over hyunjin trying to help han out with something and han lashing out at him for it. they’ve talked about their fighting multiple times, even in earlier 2 kids room episodes from previous seasons. they’ve talked about how they almost physically fought once and how they were just terrible at communicating with each other.
but they’ve also both stated that all that fighting in their earlier days brought them closer together, because they have nothing to hide and can just be themselves with each other.
their fighting is where the ‘dance better, rap better’ stuff comes from that you’ll see a lot in skz content. its based off an argument the two had.
but don’t be fooled by the fighting in their earlier days. they’re very close now, and there’s clearly a great affection and love there, as well as respect
in fact, han is the other co-president of the ‘everyone loves hyunjin’ club
if it’s not changbin, it’s han all over hyunjin and these two basically just fight for his affection, but he wants none of it, lmao
just wants a kiss, lmao
also the dumb and dumber duo. i once stated that it’s wild they didn’t get along before because they share one braincell and that one brain cell is constantly thinking of ways to be funny and dramatic as hell
part of paboracha (from the korean word that means idiot or fool), which is a nickname the fans came up with to affectionately refer to the trio of hyunjin, han, and lee know after a live with these three being silly and answering riddles (i highly recommend looking it up, it’s so funny)

Han and Felix - “the sunshine twins”
their birthdays are one day apart, hence the twins thing. some fans even speculate that, because of time zones and whatnot (considering han was born in korea, and felix was born in australia), they may have been born around the same time. although, i have no idea if that’s accurate
they honestly give me similar but different vibes. like, the same person, but not. it’s so hard to explain.
i could go on and on about how they are so similar but so different, honestly
another soulmate duo, in my opinion. there’s a lot in the group, but the whole group fits, lmao
i think they bonded pretty early on? i’m not 100% sure on that, but from the clips on the survival show, han was the first one to hug felix when he returned, and he seemed so happy. they seem pretty close, either way
they both light up a room, i think the group has even said this, but i can’t remember where, lmao
when han does his little kissing thing (you’ll know what i mean after like, 1 video compilation, i swear), felix will joke around with him and try to kiss back, lmao
little nerds. felix is really into gaming and can even put together a computer (?) and han is always into random and nerdy stuff, from what i can tell.

Felix and I.N. - “the angels”
referred to as angels during their 2 kids room episode (by changbin, i think)
get babied by the fans the most, and i bet it can get annoying for them, considering they’re in their twenties
these two seem to be into clothes and fashion the most? at least, just from what i’ve seen. i.n. is always showing us his outfits of the day, and i believe felix has talked about spending lots of money on clothes (i hope i’m not misremembering that, lol) and seems to be into trying new things with his outfits
underrated. felix brings in a lot of fans, but he tends to get overlooked for his dancing, and it’s ridiculous, since it’s a core member of danceracha. and while i.n. does get praise for his vocals, he tends to get a little more overlooked than han or seungmin. again, neither of these happen that often, more often than not, fans praise all the boys. but if we had to discuss being underrated, than yea.
they clearly adore each other very much and one of the members (lee know?) said that they are lovey-dovey with each other
but there’s not a ton about them? at least, not that i see on the daily.
i.n. once did an asmr video with felix and i have to be honest, i love it. it was so good and cute, i recommend checking it out

k-drama rec list
Prior to 2020 I’d maybe watched 2 k-dramas in my entire life, but this year I got sucked in, thanks to some great recs, and y’know, *gestures * everything.
I think I’d held off watching kdramas because my impression of them was limited to romances that I didn’t enjoy at all. But this was the year I discovered the equivalent of “gen fic” kdrama- dramas that had wonderful ensemble casts, strong story lines that weren’t entirely romance focused and also a variety in terms of themes and styles. A big plus was that I found so many of these dramas had women leading the writers’ room, and seeing the effect of that in the story telling. (Notable exceptions: a certain “star” writer who should please stop inflicting her badly written, formulaic crap on the world, yes Kim Eun-Sook, I mean you, and whoever wrote that trashfire Flower of Evil)
So here I am with my own rec list! Caveat- these are mostly not the dramas released in 2020, I’m still playing catch up! :)
Under the cut for length
My Mister/ My Ahjussi (2018, Written by Park Hae-Young, Directed by Kim Won-Seok, starring Lee Sun-kyun and Lee Ji-eun aka IU)
This was definitely my absolute favourite of the shows I watched this year across western/ asian media. It’s a story about the thread that binds us all and the ineffability of human connection. It’s also a story that deconstructs ideas of masculinity and honour and shame in a non-western context, but with an extremely compassionate touch. It’s a story that doesn’t shy away from showing the consequences of material and spiritual poverty; and how one can so easily feed into the other. It’s a love story that isn’t a romance, except that it’s a Romance. It’s about finding salvation in one another and in the kindness of strangers. It’s about choosing life, and picking yourself up off the floor to take that one last step and then the next and then the next. The one quibble I have with the series is that it could have been better paced, it does get extremely slow after the half way mark. But god, do they land the ending. Both Lee Sun-kyun and IU turn in absolutely heartbreaking performances, and fair warning, be prepared to go through an entire box of tissues watching this series.
Life (2018, written by Lee Soo-yeon and directed by Hong Jong-chan, starring Lee Dong-wook, Cho Seung-woo, Won Jin-ah, Lee Kyu-hyung, Yoo Jae-myung and Moon So-ri.)
Medical dramas are very much not my thing, and I wouldn’t have taken a chance on it except that @michyeosseo said I should, and she was right! It’s a medical drama in the sense that it’s set in a hospital, but rather than a “case-fic” format, this is actually a sharp commentary on the corporatization of health care, and the business of mixing, well, money and what should be a fundamental human right. Writer Lee Soo-yeon was coming off the global success of Stranger/Secret Forest S1 when this aired, so I understand that expectations were probably sky-high, and people were disappointed when this show didn’t give them the adrenaline rush that they wanted. On the other hand, I thought that this outing was really much more nuanced in terms of the politics and also how the ending doesn’t allow you the luxury of easy-fixes. This show has a great ensemble cast, and while it took me a while to get used to Lee Dong-wook’s woodenness (i ended up calling him mr.cadaver after watching this and was surprised to learn that he’s very popular?), in the end I was quite sold on his version of angry angst-bucket elder-sibling Dr.Ye Jin-woo. His best scenes were with Lee Kyu-hyung who turns in a lovely, achy performance as the paraplegic Dr. Ye Seon-woo who just wants to live a normal life. The love story between the two brothers is actually the emotional backbone of the story, and I think they landed that perfectly.
My one quibble with writer-nim is that she ended up writing in a forgettable and somewhat (for me at least) uncomfortable romance between the characters played by Won Jin-ah and Cho Seung-Woo. I think part of my uncomfortable-feeling was that I got the strong sense that the writer herself didn’t want to write this romance, it was as if she was being made to shoe-horn it in for Studio Reasons, and she basically grit her teeth and did the worst possible job of it. I do wish we could have absolutely had the OT3 of my dreams: Moon So-ri/Cho Seung-woo/Yoo Jae-myung like, c’mon TV gods MAKE IT HAPPEN, just...look at them!!!!
Anyway, that apart, I think this was a very engaging series, and by engaging, I also mean thirst-enabling, see below.
Stranger (aka Secret Forest or Forest of Secrets) S1 & 2 : (2017-, Written by Lee Soo-yeon, directed by
2017′s smash hit aired a much anticipated second season in 2020, and I managed to catch up just in time to watch that live, so that was thrilling :D . Writer Lee Soo-yeon mixes up thriller/office comedy/political commentary in an ambitious series. I think S1 is more “exciting” than S2 in terms of the mystery and pacing, but S2 is far more dense and interesting in terms of political commentary because it takes a long hard look at institutional corruption and in true writer-nim fashion doesn’t prescribe any easy solutions. Anyway, please enjoy public prosecutor Cho Seung-woo and police officer Bae Doona as partners/soulmates kicking ass and taking names in pursuit of Truth, Justice and just a goddamn peaceful meal, along with a stunningly competent ensemble cast. Also yes, Han Yeo Jin is a lesbian, sorry, I don’t make the rules.
Search: WWW (2019, Written by Kwon Do-Eun, directed by Jung Ji-hyun & Kwon Young-il, starring Im Soo-jung, Lee Da-hee, Jeon Hye-jin)
GOD. Where do I start? +1000 for writer Kwon Do-Eun saying “fuck the patriarchy” in the most grandiose way possible, i.e. absolutely refusing to acknowledge that it exists. Yes, this is that power fantasy, and it’s also a fun, slice-of-life tale about three women navigating their way through work, romance, national politics and everything in between. It’s true that I wasn’t entirely sold on the amount of time spent on the romance, and I really wish they’d actually had a textual wlw romance, though the subtext through the entire series is PRACTICALLY TEXT. But still, it maintains that veneer of plausible deniability and I think queer fans who are sick of that kind of treatment in media have a very valid grouse against the show. On the other hand, personally I felt that the queer-platonic vibe of the show is very wonderful and true to real life, and it was only reinforced by the ending. This is a show written by a woman for women (like me), and it shows.
Hyena (2020, Written by Kim Roo-Ri, directed by Jang Tae-yoo & Lee Chang Woo, starring Kim Hye-soo and Ju Ji-hoon )
Those of you who’ve been watching hit zombie epic Kingdom are probably familiar with Ju Ji-hoon’s brand of sexiness already. I had not watched Kingdom and got hit in the face by Mr.Sexy McSexyPants’ turn as a brash, privileged-by-birth, up and coming lawyer who gets completely runover by the smoking hot and incredibly dangerous fellow lawyer/competitor from the other side of the tracks in the person of Kim Hye-Soo. When I say they set the room on fire, I mean it, ok. Every single scene between these two is an actual bonfire of sexual attraction and emotional hand grenades, and they’re both absolutely riveting to watch. “Flower of Evil” wishes they had what this show has- an actual grown up romance as opposed to a thirteen year old twilight fan’s idea of an adult romance.
The “lawyer” shenanigans and the “cases” are hit or miss, and I think the occasional comedy fell flat for me. But that’s not why I mainlined like 6 episodes of this series overnight like a coke addict, and that’s not why you’re going to do it either. It’s so RARE, even in these enlightened days to find a female character like Jung Geum-ja: hard as nails, unapologetic about it, and not punished by the narrative for it. The best part for me is that she feels like a woman’s woman, not a man’s idea of what a Strong Female Character should be. Anyways, when I grow up I want to have what Kim Hye-soo has ok?
Other dramas that I watched this year, quickly rated:
The King: Eternal Monarch (3/10 and those 3 points are only for the combined goodness of second leads who deserved better- Jung Eun Chae, Woo Do Hwan and Kim Kyung Nam. Please head over to my AO3 and read my attempts to fix this garbage fire and rescue their characters from canon)
Flower of Evil (-10/100, dont @ me)
Tale of the Nine Tailed (5/10, I think it succeeds at what it set out to do, which is a light hearted, sweet fantasy-romance-melodrama, plus “second lead” Kim Beom will make you cry as the hot mess of a half human/ half fox spirit ALL TEARS character. I think if you’re into kdrama romances as a genre, this is probably a good bet?)
Signal (7/10, This was the first full kdrama I watched this year and would definitely recommend. It’s a police procedural with time travel shenanigans and has an engaging plot, good pacing, texture and compelling performances. My one disappointment with it was the way they wrote Kim Hye-soo’s character. As literally the only female character to survive in any way, she was given short shrift, and toward the end it really began to grate on me.)
Six Flying Dragons - (7/10, also would recommend if you’re interested in Korean historicals. It definitely already feels a bit dated in terms of styling and production values, and even scripting and acting choices. But it has a good balance of fantasy and history and political commentary. I was not a fan of Yoo In-Ah’s performance in this series, but it’s not anything that would make you want to nope out of the series. It’s GoT , if GoT was thoughtful about politics and characters and not the misogynist, racist trashfire that it became.)
My Country: The New Age - (3.5/10, and that’s 3 points to Jang Hyuk’s fan and 0.5.points to Woo Do Hwan’s heaving bosom. If you like your historical drama/fantasy with very pretty men, very gay subtext -seriously RIP to show makers who thought they could hetero it but didn’t account for Woo Do Hwan’s Tragic Face- lots of blood and tears and very nonsense plot, this is right up your alley. I probably would have enjoyed it more in other circumstances, I think? But this one just annoyed me too much at the time!
I have a couple of more dramas to watch on my list, that’ll probably carry me over into 2021, so see ya on the other side! :D

Owl House rewatch thoughts
* Hard to say from what little we see of her, but I think Luz' mom might have been less worried about her daughter reading fantasy and more about the "multiple incidents of bringing uncontained live animals and explosives to school" thing.
* If Eda considers Luz' Azura book as being only useful as kindling, it means she's not inclined to view human books as something she can make snails on. Considering how unique her portal to the human realm is treated, where did Amity get her Azura books? I've seen people suggest the author travels between realms, but if that were the case, Amity would've been able to get the latest volume from a local store rather than needing to borrow Luz' copy.
* Suggestions for other species that escaped from the Boiling Isles: the platypus and peacock mantis shrimp.
* "Weak nerd arms" ok really identifying with Luz here.
* Really love this take on Chosen One stories. Because yes, there is an appeal in being told you're special, you're unique in the best possible way, but ultimately this is a story about people who aren't "special" so much as outcasts who do their best with the situation they're in. Which is something that a lot more people can aspire to be.
* The fact that this was a set scheme(as the multiple fake maps would indicate) rather than a trap specifically designed for Luz indicates that even people who've spent their lives on the Boiling Isles would be drawn to the idea of being a magical chosen one. I bet Amity's not the only one to have an interest in fantasy literature around here.
* Oh wow Amity's first appearance outside the credits is . . . something. It's easy to forget just how far she grew in one season.
* Eda's not a *bad* teacher, so much as she has yet to learn that teaching requires expanding on a concept you introduce and explaining your reasoning. "Here is what you can learn from tasting snow" instead of just "here, taste these different kinds of snow"
* Hm. For someone who despairs at the concept of the school teaching blind obedience, her teaching style kinda relies on it. Bit of a hypocrite there, Eda.
* Gonna be honest, the first time I watched this and King mentioned Eda sneaking a drink of elixir, I thought it was going to turn out to be a magic-looking flask.
* It seems slightly odd that King's apparently known Eda for a while but didn't have any idea of the curse. Maybe she was just REALLY good about keeping up with her elixirs pre-series.
* Really like the metaphor for a chronic illness that's kept under control by medication.
* If the Emperor's Coven provides access to all forms of magic, you'd think others aspiring for a spot would be permitted a multi-track education at Hexside. That might be why none of them seem to be that impressive at magic when they're supposed to be the "best of the best" -- even if they have *access* to all forms of magic, they've only had training in one specific field during the bulk of their education.
* lbr, Lilith's cheating was worse because at least Eda told Luz what she was doing.
* You'd think Willow and Gus might have caught on that Luz didn't have permission for them to come over when she told them to hide from Eda.
* It's nice that Eda realizes raising a kid with a "screw the rules" mindset will result in a kid who breaks her rules sometimes. Cleaning up the mess she caused is really the correct punishment for Luz; directly dealing with the consequences of her actions but otherwise considering it a lesson learned.
* Reading to kids in the library is an A+ way to shift Amity from "Jerk" to "Jerk with a heart of gold" territory.
* Prediction: At some point, Luz will return to the human world (probably only briefly but Eda won't know at the time) and Eda will come across the "Coping with empty nest syndrome" book Luz got her from the library. She'll cry. King will cry. Hooty will cry. Every viewer will cry.
* Pretty sure that, given what the world is like, if any of them ended up questioned about their actions during the body swap episode, they could just say "Oh yeah I was body swapped that day. What'd I get up to?" and everyone would consider this a perfectly logical explanation for them acting out-of-character.
* HC that Hexside is fully aware some illusion-track students skip class by having an illusion of themselves attend in their place, but they figure a student maintaining a decent replica of themselves for the duration of the class period requires enough effort to count as a form of class participation, so they just let everyone think they're getting away with it.
* Gus and Willow are really ride-or-die friends. Always nice to have.
* Probably some of the mystery appeal will be gone from the Human Appreciation Society once a legit human is just attending classes on a regular basis; being able to get definitive answers to questions rather than spending your time speculating would cut back on the draw.
* I love all the details they include on this show -- a lot of other shows would just stick in scribbles while panning past pictures instead of writing out all of Eda's incident reports.
* The pallisman is a neat concept; sort of like a mix of a wand and a familiar, a magical control that will have opinions of its own.
* Given Bat Queen apparently has enough of, um, a biological aspect to have kids, I wonder if that means Owlbert is capable of laying eggs. Or having eggs with another owl/pallisman if the male pronouns are anything to go by.
* I mean even Phineas and Ferb didn't question Perry laying an egg when he uses male pronouns so could go either way in terms of what Disney would allow.
* Reading the book fair signs, it looks like sci-fi is a popular genre in the Boiling Isles. Makes sense, since what we'd consider Fantasy would be more contemporary/urban fantasy to them.
* Getting the vibe that someone on staff had a less-than-amicable experience co-writing with a friend to inspire this one. And/or experience with shitty contracts.
* The Hexside requirements also required knowledge of basic runes, but given Luz apparently had no issue with that I'm guessing she just picked those up offscreen.
* "I've seen worse" is the ideal admissions response tbh. Like . . . she pulled off the required spells and the headmaster has seen decades of students' awkward first attempts. It probably counts as a good day when no one's admissions test resulted in needing to bring in someone from the Construction Track to repair the building.
* It's very reminiscent of D&D that the majority of the cast has the response of "This is clearly a trap. Let's check it out!"
* You'd think that carnival fortune tellers wouldn't have the same appeal in a world where it's something you study at school. Unless it's viewed the same way as those "magic" shows they have sometimes where the tricks all involve chemical reactions.
* Kinda surprised a school that teaches kids fire spells doesn't have some kind of fire suppression system in place.
* Hrm. Guessing the mind guardian went back and undid their own damage offscreen; otherwise they'd have had to go re-do the repairs before leaving.
* Good they had the wifi and charging cable coming through the portal to explain why Luz' phone still has service and the battery's not long dead.
* Luz, how have you survived this long with your instinct for pushing buttons. The same as the rest of humanity in a world full of buttons, I suppose.
* Probably if they thought about it, the best criteria for picking Grom royalty would be less who's the most skilled at magic and more who has the most low-key fears. . . . nvm, having a Stay-Puft incident would cause them to reasonably scrap that approach. Maybe appointing someone who obsesses over grades would have better odds of producing a relatively-simple-to-combat exam paper.
* I'm thinking the letters are written by Eda, who doesn't intend anything sinister by it so much as being the type to cover her bases when pulling off a scam and realizing Luz' mother would need some evidence to indicate her daughter was safely at camp.
* The band-aids clearly have some healing spell built-in, considering they've been used to heal inanimate objects.
* someone on the writing staff has a long-standing rant about Quidditch they've been holding back on.
* I know that normally the humor in the cut from "she's finally growing up." to Luz planning the heist would be that she's doing something that sensible adults would consider to be a bad idea, but if Eda saw her just then she'd wipe away a tear of pride and go "Her first self-planned heist! They grow up so fast!"
* Eda's the one who talks about cheating at stuff, but Lilith has a habit of playing *dirty*.
* I would like to say I appreciate them going with a more serious credit sequence because it was disconcerting with Star Vs when a dark ending was followed by "I THINK EARTH'S A REALLY GREAT PLACE"
* Lilith may have made a 30-years-late attempt to redeem herself, but I really don't trust her. I don't quite want her dead, but she DID spend decades trying to force her sister to join the Emperor's Coven as a prerequisite for curing her curse.

Rambling about The Stranded
Alright, after sleeping in way too long and getting myself a cup of coffee, maybe I’ll finally manage to wirte something coherent about The Stranded?
Spoilers for the whole series below, of course.
-I liked it? Probably wouldn’t have watched it in one sitting if I didn’t, but still. It was good.
-So I heavily recommend it. Although if you’re reading this you probably have watched it already so who am I even talking to lmao.
-Kinda hoped it would have been scarier though. There were some creepy moments but none that were truly scary. Which was a slight disappointment, but they probably weren’t even going for straight up horror.
-That said though, I got a slight feeling that the series tried to do way too many things at once and lost it’s focus at times. They kinda kept switching the tone.
-Wich offered nice diversity and kept things fresh, BUT
-It kinda made the different aspects of the show feel a bit separate from each other. There was the horror-y stuff with supernatural aspects, then the relationship dramas, and then there was also the whole thing of the kids building a mini society on the island (or maybe more like how they kinda failed at that and everything just crumbled down).
-and also resulted in weird continuity issues like everyone just forgetting Arisa in the jungle for TWO WEEKS. I mean most of them probably didn’t care, but what about Ying? To be fair, Arisa did kinda ditch her, but still. She seemed to just forget she even existed and wow.
-They all got over Joey’s death a bit too quickly too, imo. Even though you’d think it’s a big shock for all of them. I mean sure, they just survived a tsunami and don’t even know if their FAMILIES are alive, but Joey was still the first one among them to die, so it would have been nice if it had a bit more impact.
-Some of the more lighthearted aspects also felt out of place at times. Didn’t bother me too much, but it’ll probably be jarring to some people.
-Also it was slightly amusing how even in the desperate situation they were in, ppl still had time for relationship drama. But they are teenagers and all the stress is probably messing up their hormones real bad, so I guess it’s kinda understandable.
-Anyway, my main concern would be that they they don’t manage to tie together these different sides of the shows in a meaningful way in the upcoming season(s).
-When Arisa first appeared on screen, like 2 minutes into the show, my first thought was literally; wow, I bet she likes girls? AND I MEAN-
-Speaking of which, the whole Arisa/Ying thing got me so confused. It was clear as day Arisa was attracted to her, but then she got all like ‘lol nope’. To be fair, it was most likely just the case of her not being ready to admit her feelings. But still, it frustrated me.
-ALSO then there was Arisa having a few moments with Nat towards the end of the series and Ying being patching things up with Ice.
-This is probably just me being way too into my ‘Arisa must be a lesbian’ -headcanon, but I have a mini theory that she was actually in love with Mint.
-Istg if Arisa and Ying DON’T get together in the hypothetical s2, I’m gonna be upset.
-Moving on from that, I also accidentally predicted May getting pregnant lmao.
-Can’t really remember it clearly, but there was some scene scene in ep1 when I thought ‘hm, is she pregnant?’ (I think they focused the camera on her stomach or something). Sure she wasn’t at the moment, but still. Lol.
-I also kept wondering in any of them even used condoms. Did the island even have condoms? I mean probably yes, but I’d be surprised if Ice and Ying hadn’t already used them all.
-I guess it really was just a matter of time before someone got pregnant.
-My favorite characters ended up being Arisa, Ying and Nahm. Especially loved Arisa, which is absolutely no surprise at all.
-ALSO, I just have to say this, Ying is really beautiful?? I’d be crushing on her too.
-Really hated Anan, but he was such an interesting character! Really complex, and I want to know more about him (and why he hates Kraam so much).
-Anan losing his shit over May cheating on him cracked me up bc I associate March too heavily with Phu and if you’ve watched Hormones, YOU KNOW WHAT HE DID. You reap what you sow, honey.
-I have surprisingly little to say about Krit and Jack, even though I liked them?
-They mainly just shattered my heart. Like I legit wanted to cry when Jack died, how’s that even prossible? We didn’t even know him for THAT long.
-Also, I probably shouldn’t have watched LBC so close to this. At first I just kept seeing Perth and Mark as Ae and Kengkla and LET ME TELL YOU, it kinda cracked me up even among all the angst. It did go away pretty soon tho.
-I know I’ve wished a slow, painful death for Kengkla (no offense at all, i’m just... NOT fond of the character), BUT THIS IS UNRELATED. Jack did nothing wrong.
-Both Perth and Mark did such a great job and I’M PROUD OF THEM.
-Btw, the casting for Jack and Jan was perfect. The girl who played Jan really resembled Mark. They aren’t actually related, are they?
-Btw, wouldn’t it have been better to amputate Jack’s leg to stop the infection from spreading? Sure that would have had it’s own risks, but since his situation was already pretty desperate, they should have just taken the chance.
-In the same vein, couldn’t they have used the generator to power up their phones? Kraam could have listened to the voice message his dad left, and WE WOULD HAVE ANSWERS.
-Okay, most likely not their top priority, but still.
-Gun confessing his love to sleeping Nat was so soft and I loved it.
-They most likely won’t end up together, but I want it so bad.
-I’m still not sure what to think about ‘’the teacher’’, or whoever she ends up being. Is she evil or not? Getting mixed signals here. Or maybe she’s more like a neutral being, not truly evil or good.
-Nahm said she’s not and she seems to be the most trustworthy of them all, but then again she DID have that weird dream. Is she under her influence?
-Took me a while to realize, but almost all of the people they showed at the end of the last episode, also acted in Hormones? No wonder they looked familiar.
-I kinda predicted we wouldn’t get any real answers in this season, but I’m still a bit frustrated. I WANNA KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON.
I most likely forgot to include something, and my ramblings most likely make 0 sense, but if I want to add something I’ll just make a follow-up post.
I really hope the series does well enough for us to get a second season, because this series definitely NEEDS ONE.

Original Prompt: CS fic where someone walks by a street musician every day in her way to work and she always bring him coffe and something to eat because she thinks he’s poor and could use some help, but actually he’s like a super star and just plays in the street for fun?
Part one: Mystery Musical Man

The first time she places a cup of coffee at his feet and a five dollar bill in his guitar case, he nearly stops singing “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and asks her for her name, but he doesn’t, the music continuing to roll off of his tongue and his fingers as she walks away, her golden hair falling down her back and nearly reaching the top of her black pencil skirt. He’s noticed her before. She walks this route nearly every day, and she usually comes by when the streets are pretty empty. It’s the same reason that he plays early in the morning on Murray Hill. It’s New York City so it’s crowded, but it’s not a madhouse.
Or maybe it is, and he’s got no clue since he’s distracted by the blonde woman who walks by him five days a week. She’s usually dressed professionally, modest skirts and pants with blouses, and if he had to guess, the sneakers on her feet are only for her walk to work and not what she wears all day. He’s got no bloody clue what it is that she does for a living, but he’s curious about her.
He stays curious about her as the weeks pass by and she continuously brings him cups of coffee from The Bean. It’s always black, and even though he usually likes a little milk in his coffee, he learns to accept it with a kind smile and nothing else. Many times he almost talks to her, asks her for her name, but despite the fact that words are constantly flowing out of his mouth as he sings, the words are never the ones that he wants to say.
“What’s your name?”
“You’re beautiful.”
“Why do you buy me coffee every day?”
He wants to ask that last question even though he knows the answer. She thinks he’s a struggling musician playing on street corners for tips, and while he is a musician playing on a street corner, he’s not struggling nor truly asking for tips. It’s been years since he had to do that, but he remembers the struggle of needing to supplement his income and get a little extra cash on the side. He honestly didn’t think he looked too poor off, but he does usually walk here from his apartment and wear torn jeans and a battered Yankees cap. Maybe he should dress a little more nicely, but then again, then the beautiful lass might not buy him coffee anymore.
He swears that one day he’ll talk to her.
She is his muse after all.

“We want you to do a concert,” Arthur tells him as he sits in his recording label’s office in Los Angeles with Will, Robin, and Anton sitting in the chairs next to him.
“We don’t have any new music,” Robin points out, leaning forward in his chair. “Why would we do a concert without any music?”
“You have new music,” Arthur sighs as he takes a sip of his tea from behind his desk, a view of the ocean behind him. “You’ve got enough for half of a set, which will be a perfect preview of the album for when Killian finishes writing it, and then you can mix in old favorites. This will keep you all relevant.”
He chuckles a little bit at that, but he always does whenever he has to talk business. He plays guitar and sings songs and writes lyrics because he enjoys it. Yes, the success and adrenaline of playing in front of thousands of people is wonderful and he wouldn’t trade it in, but at the end of the day, none of that matters if he’s not enjoying making music. That’s what it’s always been about. His mum taught him to play the piano and his brother taught him to play the guitar, and he never feels closer to them than when he’s playing. Really, he never feels closer to them than when he’s standing on the street singing songs form decades past because they’re the songs his mum always had on in the house whenever she would cook or do laundry to make it all a little more exciting.
His mother used to always be dancing with this beatific smile on her face and laughter on her lips, and he likes to remember her that way instead of weak and pale in a hospital bed. It’s the same with Liam. Killian likes to remember him refusing to dance with their mum, too old and too proud, before eventually giving in and dancing. It’s easier than remembering the knock that came to his apartment door with two Naval officers standing outside.
It’s happier too.
Music has always been his safe haven. It’s how he’s processed things, how he’s fallen in love and how he’s healed from broken hearts. It allows him to put his thoughts and feelings into a set of lyrics that go along with a melody, and maybe, just maybe, it makes all of that heartache feel a little further from home while still keeping it close where only he knows every meaning behind each word and note in a song.
Having the White Sails take off and be successful has been amazing, more than he could have ever dreamed of, but as Arthur asks them to play some of his new songs to a crowd full of people, all he really wants to do is play them on the sidewalk and have the pretty lass with green eyes and a beautiful smile hear him sing.
He’s rather fascinated with her and the coffee she always brings him, and most of the songs he’s written in the past few months have been partially written about her. A part of him wonders if she listens to much music as she has never recognized his face or his voice, but he’s not conceited enough to think that everyone on the street should know who he is. He likes the anonymity.
Just maybe not with her.
“We don’t need to be kept bloody relevant,” Will groans, his accent coming out a little stronger than before. “We are relevant. I haven’t worked my arse off for – ”
“Where and when?” he interrupts, an idea sparking in his mind.
“What now?”
“Where and when do you want us to do the concert? If we’re going to play some of the new songs, I need to fine tune them, and I’ll need a couple of weeks for that.”
Arthur smiles, and it’s the one Killian recognizes as it meaning something big.
“Two months from today in Madison Square Garden. Our marketing team is ready to drop both promotion and ticket sales tonight.”
“Do it.”
He spends the next twelve days in the recording studio trying to fix his songs and make them perfect. They won’t be. They’ll still need some work before they officially go on the album, but he thinks he likes them for now. He also thinks that he likes the tune that he can’t get out of his head about the woman with emerald eyes and hair that shines in the morning light, and he makes a promise to himself to actually speak to her when he returns home.

The morning after he gets back to New York, he takes his guitar and walks then ten blocks to his usual spot, deciding that today is a Queen day, and sings acoustic versions of most of their hits. He’s in the middle of We Are the Champions when he sees her. She’s got headphones in and only one cup of coffee in her hand. He didn’t tell her that he’d be gone for weeks, but honestly, he didn’t really know that he would be. It was only supposed to be a weekend. Besides, they don’t know each other. Just because they have this routine doesn’t actually mean anything.
Right?
She stops to watch him play, and there’s barely another soul around as he finishes out the song, letting the music die as his fingers stop moving.
“Where have you been?” she asks, her voice a pitch lower than he thought it would be. He likes it.
He quirks an eyebrow, shocked at her speaking, before he flashes her a smile and looks down at her coffee mug before looking back up to those emerald eyes with a smirk painted on his lips. “Did you miss me?”
She shrugs, and he has to stifle his laugh. He can’t believe they’re finally speaking after dancing around each other for months. Or really, singing around each other. There has been no dancing involved. He bets she’d be a good dancer.
“I guess so. I didn’t – I stopped buying your coffee. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be, love. I wasn’t around. Wouldn’t want you to waste your money, but I did miss you and your coffee.”
He obviously doesn’t have a filter, but he’s somehow comfortable talking to her.
“Yeah?”
“Absolutely,” he sighs, encouraged by the little spark of excitement in her eyes. “They don’t make black coffee in LA, and they don’t have pretty lasses bring it to you.”
It’s been a solid year since he flirted with a woman, but he thinks he’s doing alright. Because that is what he’s doing. Flirting. He’s missed it.
“What a pity,” she mumbles, her cheeks flushed red even as he can tell that she’s downplaying her reaction. “I wonder how you survived.”
She’s got spunk. He likes her.
(Spunk? Does he suddenly live in the 1950’s?)
“The hardest few weeks of my life honestly. I didn’t think I was going to make it.”
She laughs, a real, genuine laugh, and if he could turn that into a melody to have forever, he would. Hopefully he’ll get the chance to make her laugh again.
Hopefully this conversation isn’t a one-time thing.
It’s not.
The next day she brings him his coffee, and they chat for a little while, stumbling into the fact that they both enjoy comedies more than any other genre of television, though he does love a good historical drama every now and then. But she’s a fan of shows like The Office and The Good Place, so they talk about last week’s episode before she has to go to work. It goes like that for a few more days, and in those days he learns that her favorite food is a grilled cheese hold all of the fancy toppings and that she runs every other day after work. If she doesn’t, she’ll apparently go crazy. He gets that. She obviously sits at a desk most of the day, and he would go crazy staying still for that long.
It’s a Tuesday when he finally learns her name. He’s between songs, his throat a little scratchy, when she shows up, so instead of placing his coffee on the ground like she usually does, she hands it to him.
“Thank you, love.”
“Yeah, no problem,” she mumbles before bringing her bottom lip between her teeth, her eyes darting anywhere but to him. He takes a sip of his coffee, the liquid warm and soothing on the way down, and just before he finishes swallowing, she blurts out, “what’s your name?”
It takes him back a bit, but mostly all he can think is finally.
“Killian,” he answers, flashing her a smile. “And you?”
“Do you not have a last name?”
He thinks on it a minute, debating whether or not he wants to tell her his last name. He doesn’t think she knows who he is, or maybe she does and doesn’t care. Either way, he doesn’t want this little routine between them to change. He comes out here in the mornings for himself, but he would be remiss to think that he didn’t also make his way here to the same spot every morning to see her.
“I do,” he slowly begins, tapping his fingers against his coffee cup. “I just didn’t think you’d care.”
“I care. I’m Emma Swan if that helps.”
Emma Swan.
He likes it. God help him he thinks he might like her.
Is thirty four too old to have a crush?
“Jones then. Killian Jones.”
Her lips twitch, threatening to pull up into a smile, and he already knows that he’s got a smile painted on his lips. “Did you phrase it that way so you could say your name like James Bond?”
He winks. “I guess you’ll never know.”
They continue on as usual, getting to know each other over their ten minute chats every weekday. She brings him his coffee, he calls her Swan, and on the days when he’s in the middle of a song when she walks up, he changes the lyrics to her name to make her smile. It works every single time, and no part of him cares that it’s a little cheesy.
He’s a little cheesy when he’s tired. They’ve been having rehearsals during the day and during some nights, and it’s exhausting. It’s been awhile since they’ve played outside of a recording studio or one of their living rooms, so it’s a bit frustrating for them not to be perfectly in sync. It’s just one night, though, one show, and as time nears for it, he finally starts to feel like they’re getting ready.
But in the mornings he desperately needs his coffee from Emma, the family lawyer (how badass is that?) who still doesn’t seem to believe him when he tells her that he’s a musician.
So one morning, a week before the concert, when there’s a practical monsoon taking over Manhattan, instead of staying in his apartment, he makes his way to the closest The Bean shop in hopes that he can see Emma. It might be taking it a step too far, but honestly, it’s not the craziest thing he’s ever done for a woman.
He sees her when she walks in, her red rain coat dripping with water, and he tugs at his beanie while she talks to the barista who points over at him. Emma’s head twists to look in his direction, and she stalks her way over to him, plopping down in the chair across from him.
“So you stalking me now?” she laughs as her eyes come into contact with his. “Because I’ve got to say, I’m not sure the coffee I bring you every morning is worth all of the hassle.”
He gives her a lopsided grin, knowing that it’s charming, and reaches up to scratch at his ear, adjusting his beaning again. “I’m not stalking you. I, well, I can’t perform in all of this rain, and I still needed my coffee fix.”
“How’d you even figure out it was this store? You know this is a chain, right?”
He shrugs. “Google, some powers of deduction, and a whole lot of luck.”
“Well color me impressed mystery musical man.”
What in the world did she just call him? Mystery musical man?
He can’t help but laugh, and it ends up being louder than he expected, making several people stare at him. His ears are suddenly far too hot under this beanie.
He’s not alone, though. He can see the blush on Emma’s cheeks. “Um, nothing.”
“No, no,” he teases, leaning forward on the table and waggling his brows while flashing her another smile, completely amused and besotted by this entire situation. Man is he glad that she’s not mad that he showed up here. “You called me mystery musical man. Swan, I didn’t know you had a nickname for me.”
“Yeah, well, I went a few months not knowing who you were. What was I supposed to do?”
“Ask me my name.”
“I did…eventually.” He shakes his head from side to side as he smiles, remembering to slide her coffee cup over to her. “So, um, can I ask you a question? And you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.”
“Sure, love, but I can’t think of anything I wouldn’t tell you unless you’re about to ask me some deep, personal secret like if I’ve ever dyed my hair.”
She snorts into her drink. That’s not quite as melodic as her laugh, but he likes it just the same. “No, no. I’d never ask such a deeply personal question, but I do, um, what the hell is it that you do for a living?”
His brows furrow as he clicks his tongue. Wow, she really doesn’t believe him. “Didn’t we talk about this already? I’m a musician.”
“Yeah, yeah, I know, but do you do anything else besides performing before eight in the morning? I know this is rude, but I’m just…curious.”
“Tis not rude,” he admits, hoping to calm her. She doesn’t need to feel awkward around him. He hopes that she doesn’t, that they’re friends, that they have…potential. “What someone does for a living is basic conversation. But seriously, no. I’m a musician, and I do play more than the mornings. That’s honestly just for fun.”
“So where do you play? I’d love to come see you.” He raises his brows, curling the right side of his lips into a smirk and closing his eyes halfway as he stares at her, trying to get her to blush like she was earlier. “To see you play,” she clarifies, hiding behind her mug. “I���d love to see you play.”
She’s adorable, and he’s utterly, officially charmed.
“I know what you mean, love. I, um,” he hesitates, knowing that what he’s about to tell her could change their relationship but wanting to tell her anyhow, “I haven’t had many gigs lately, but I am playing on Friday night if you’d like to come.”
“Really?” she asks excitedly. “Where?”
He clenches his teeth down and looks up at the ceiling, trying to figure out what to say to keep some of the mystery alive so she’ll be more likely to show up to the show. He is mystery musical man after all.
“Tell you what, love, I’m going to get you some tickets for you and a friend, and the address will be on them. Does that work for you?”
“It makes you seem like the definition of mystery musical man.”
“Yeah, well, that’s apparently who I am.”
They chat for a little while longer before he walks with her to work, holding his umbrella over both of their heads, and when he realizes that she’s not sure how to say goodbye, he boldly leans down and brushes a kiss against her cheek that he swears lights his entire body aflame.

Adrenaline runs through him for all of Friday. He’s nervous. He’s a professional, and he’s so damn nervous that he might vomit as he paces back and forth in their dressing room after sound check. He’s not sure if it’s the combination of pre-show jitters and showcasing new songs or if it has to do with him wondering whether or not Emma is going to show up tonight. It’ll be fine if she doesn’t. Really, it will.
But he wants her here.
He’s got feelings for the woman, and he’d like for her to know what it really is that he does, no more vague secrets.
“How much coffee did you drink, Jones?” Will chuckles, calmly propping his feet on a coffee table and taking a sip of his water. “You’re vibrating.”
“No coffee. I’m tired.”
“He invited a lass,” Robin not so helpfully supplies.
“I should have never told you, you arse.”
“Yeah, but then you wouldn’t have known how to get her tickets.”
He rolls his eyes and keeps pacing. This is all going to be just fine. It has to be. The show will be fine, great probably. Two songs in, and he’ll be back to his normal self on stage.
And it’ll be a damn good time.
And Emma will be here.
“Hello, everybody,” he says into the microphone when they’re finally on stage minutes later, lights blaring down on him and the audience talking under a loud murmur as he takes several deep breaths and plasters a smile on his face. “I’m so glad you all can be here tonight. I know it’s been awhile since we performed, but it took a bit to get some inspiration for our new songs, though I finally found some lately. So I thank you for being patient with us. I’m Killian Jones, and we are The White Sails.”

After the concert he’s on a high that he hasn’t felt for a long time, his body practically buzzing with excitement and a little bit of the rum he drank before the show. It went well, the new songs getting a good reaction, but now that he’s changed into sweatpants and a t-shirt and has had time to digest all of that, all he can think about is the fact that Emma bloody Swan is waiting outside in the hallway for him.
His mates are going to tease him about this for a solid month.
It’ll be worth it.
He steps out of the dressing room, his hand already at his ear with nerves, and walks right toward Emma and who he assumes is her friend.
“I’m sorry I didn’t buy you coffee,” she blurts out before her eyes widen, the mortification practically broadcasted on her face.
He shrugs and laughs, unable to help himself. “That’s okay, love. I think maybe you can have a pass this time.” He leans forward and wraps his arms around her, embracing her and hoping that he doesn’t smell too much like sweat when he hasn’t taken a shower. Emma smells like vanilla. He’s never noticed that before. “Did you have a good time?”
“Yeah, yeah,” she answers as she pulls back, “that was incredible. You’re incredible. I’m just entirely confused.” He expected that and is about to address it when the woman next to Emma coughs, and they both turn to look at her. “And this is Ruby Lucas,” Emma tells him.
“Nice to meet you, mystery musical man. I came with to make sure my girl wasn’t going to get murdered tonight.”
“Totally understandable,” he laughs, reaching for Ruby’s hand. He forgot to take off his rings from the show, and he feels them against her skin. “That’s why there were two tickets. To prevent the murder, you know?”
“I’m sorry,” Emma interrupts, and his attention turns back to her, “I just have a lot of questions.”
“Well Swan, maybe I have some answers. Do you – ” Arthur calls his name behind him, and he twists to look at him to see him motioning his hand. “ – can you and Ruby wait here while I do a bit of quick business?”
“Sure. That’s fine.”
He jogs off to talk to Arthur, hopefully telling him that this won’t take long because he’d rather be talking to Emma than to Arthur about what he’s sure is some deadline for the new album.
“Great show, Jones,” he greets, clapping his hand and pulling him in for a hug and patting his back.
“Thank you. It went better than I thought it would.”
“It always does. The new songs were great. The label loves them. We ended up sold out on tickets and merch tonight. That was what was unexpected. Not the show going well but us having an audience.”
“Quite a lot of faith you’re putting in me there.”
Arthur rolls his eyes, always the realist. “You know what I mean. I just wanted to let you know that and that we have a meeting with the label tomorrow.”
“God, please tell me that it’s in the New York office. I’m not flying cross country tomorrow.”
“It’s in the New York office,” he sighs, smiling a little bit. “At one. Make sure Will shows up.”
“I’ll try my best.”
“Good, go back to talk to your girl.”
He almost protests, but instead he winks at Arthur and starts making his way back to Emma who is probably going crazy with thoughts right now. She gets up to greet him, and before he can even open his mouth to apologize for leaving, she’s wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him, her lips soft against his. It takes him far too long to kiss back, the moment shocking him, but when he does, he tries to keep it soft and slow, treating her with all of the care she deserves instead of pushing her back up against the wall and devouring her. Though, now that he knows how Emma kisses, he wants to do that too. His lips caress hers and his hands reach up to cup her cheeks before threading into her hair while hers does the same, another pleasant buzz spreading across his skin.
He absolutely cannot believe that he’s kissing Emma Swan.
Drinking all of that black coffee without creamer was totally worth it.
When she pulls back, he growls, not able to stop himself as he chases her lips and rests his forehead against hers, breathing in even though he knows that she’s taken his breath away.
Maybe he gets a little cheesy all of the time.
“So the whole being in a band thing really did it for you, huh?”
“No,” she promises, quickly brushing her lips against his again while her fingers keep playing with his hair. He’d like to keep doing that for a long time. “I don’t care about that. It’s awesome, but I don’t care.”
“Yeah?” he asks, all of his nerves over the whole thing beginning to fade away. Maybe this will all work out.
“Yeah. All I really want is to buy you a coffee.”
He laughs against her lips, unable to help himself. Tonight is a good night.
Tonight is a damn great night.
“You know what, Swan? I think I can buy this time.”
He and Emma get coffee two days later. He buys despite her protests, and it goes on like that for days and weeks and months as coffee dates turn into actual dates and dates turn into overnight stays and overnight stays turn into moving in together. Eventually moving in together turns into getting married, and all along the way he writes far more songs than he thinks he has in his entire life, filling albums with his love.
Emma Jones is a fantastic muse.

TV series ask meme: Doctor Who
send me a tv series and I’ll tell you:
my all-time ultimate fave character: I’m not sure I have a favorite, but I have clung to Clara harder than any of the others. I like all the companions I’ve seen much of, some more than others, but she was the one who makes me think the most. I also really love Martha and Rose. I guess those three are my favorites, but it depends on what we’re talking about.
a character I didn’t used to like but now do: River Song. I understand some of the criticisms of her, but she grew on me to the point that I would say I like her.
a character I used to like but now don’t: I never liked her to begin with, but the original portrayal of Cassandra in 1x02 makes my skin crawl a bit because of the transphobia involved now that I understand it, which I probably didn’t in my early years as a fan. I appreciate that the second and final portrayal of her involved showing her some empathy, which I guess was a slight rebound on that, but still. Bad taste in my mouth.
a character I’m indifferent about: Thirteen, so far, because I haven’t seen her or her companions??? And I guess that I was just kind of put off by the very hamfisted pop-feminist marketing angle they went for. Like, the fact that the Doctor wouldn’t be opposed to regenerating as a woman had been foreshadowed since Eleven, so I don’t really think that we needed Simm!Master being made even more arbitrarily sexist than he already was (which was enough and made some kind of sense character-wise) and Twelve and co being all ~the future is female~ in the text of the show. I mean, I guess hedging your bets against idiot dudebros who can’t read the writing on the wall. But yeah, I hope to… one day enjoy some Thirteen but for various reasons including the way the marketing just made me feel blank about something I thought I would otherwise be intrigued by, I haven’t gotten around to it.
a character who deserved better: Martha Jones the mostest. Also, Danny Pink. Ianto Jones (Torchwood). Also Owen and Tosh but especially Tosh. Probably a bunch of other episodic characters, including that Family of Blood whom the Doctor went full wrathful-Eldritch-god on. Oh, and Donna Noble.
a ship I’ve never been able to get into: Doctor/Donna as a romantic thing. There are others I’ve seen that I’m indifferent to or put off by, but that one is one that I can sympathize with the urge to ship but just… can’t.
a ship I’ve never been able to get over: Honestly since I’ve liked Doctor Who for over a decade, this is a hard question to answer. Doctor/Rose was one of my first ships as a teenager that I really understood in a fannish way, but over time the fire about it has cooled somewhat for me. I like it still, but I feel like over time I stopped being as OTP~ about it. So Doctor/Rose is a mainstream ship that I really like when presented in certain ways. Clara/Danny broke my heart. I liked Amy/Rory as they matured, and “together or not at all” made me really happy even if I was iffy about the early execution. I still tear up a little at the musical piece from that scene. And… uh… I am forever transfixed by Doctor/Master | Missy and Doctor (especially Twelve) & Clara and might be persuaded to ship it under certain circumstances. See, I can’t choose, but I guess if I had to it would be one of the last two. Oh, and it’s pretty much bits and pieces except on the Torchwood side, but one of my favorite rarepairs in the world is Jack Harkness/Martha Jones and I would’ve endgamed it so hard had Torchwood S3 ever existed.
a cute, low-key ship: Jenny/Vastra? I’m mostly pretty “oooh I can’t decide” about choosing ships and favorites, but in this case I was pretty, like, on-board with it. I wrote a fic one time which is more than I can say for even ships I’ve been more into. Doctor/River wavers between “I accept it” and being low-key to very occasional bursts of Strong Feelings that would put it in the above-category.
an unpopular ship but I still enjoyed it: Jack Harkness/Martha Jones.
a ship that was totally wrong and never should have happened: The sexist, dehumanizing elements of the episodic romance in Love and Monsters have aged really badly. At first, I didn’t really fully understand why so many people hated it so much, but I get it now, even though I liked the underlying concept for that episode a lot. I also have a lot of discourse-y opinions about why, while I enjoyed some of it and rooted for Ianto and Jack both to be happier, together or apart, that I really don’t like Jack/Ianto endgame and/or it being treated like this Epic Romance when it really only became Epic because Ianto died horribly. I would just prefer to ignore CoE (I have never watched it) and endgame ship them with other people. But this is a sin to people who are major Janto shippers, and I support you! I just… don’t personally… jive with it. It felt like Ianto settling for me and then getting killed for it.
my favourite storyline/moment: The whole narrative throughline involving the Doctor, Clara, and Missy in S8 and S9. It really played with the whole “the bad guy is right” and “who is the bad guy” in a way that never became so nihilistic I couldn’t stomach it, and in fact led to Missy’s redemption, which is hitting all of my happy buttons.
a storyline that never should have been written: The ending of Love & Monsters (the stupid kids-show-write-in-monster resulting in a woman being a tile that performs oral sex for the rest of her lifespan is bad but didn’t have to be like that). I’m really bitter about The Girl in the Fireplace even though there are parts of it that I have grown to be at peace with. I still would probably be happier if the episode mysteriously vanished from memory. That bizarre thing with the Daleks in business suits and something about pigs? I hate The God Complex, like, a lot. I only ever watched it once and am afraid to try and stomach it again. And there are others I’m just indifferent about or have mixed feelings about, but those are my axes to grind. Interesting how, at this point, most of my gripes happened in the RTD era, though The Girl in the Fireplace was entirely the result of then-Moffat’s textual criticism on how stupid it would be for the Doctor to fall in love with a common girl. Probably my favorite episodes in S1 are actually the ones that involve the Slitheen, but I hate the fatphobia and fart-joke-heavy aspects of those as aliens. Would tweak the actual threat, though the writing of the overall story feels like some of the best in early Doctor Who revival to me?
my first thoughts on the show: The first episode I ever saw was The Idiot’s Lantern, and I really understood nothing about it except that it was science fiction, a revival, and something a British friend watched every Saturday. I was perplexed, but intrigued. Then I caught random smatterings of episodes over the rest of my Christmas break, and by the time I saw The Christmas Invasion on Christmas, I was in love and given a new lease on hope. I had just gone through a personal trauma, and it really helped me to feel something about anything again, and S3 and Simm!Master’s role really helped me grapple with what I’d been through and feel empowered enough to survive.
my thoughts now: I always tell people that I’m kind of indebted to Doctor Who for my life. And I feel like that’s true. My emotional involvement with it varies a lot, depending on when you’re talking to me, but it’s a comfort-attachment for sure. There are certain lines or scenes from it that form some of the foundation of my personality, when I manage to have one. I think it is at its best when it is showing love for what it is: healing, restorative, and revolutionary, but on the other side of the coin, cruel, dangerous, and destructive. I think its engagement with questions about the nature of love and responsibility toward one’s fellow-living-things is when it is the most fun. I haven’t really interacted with it as much since Clara left. I have seen about half of Bill’s episodes, the missing chunk being the middle of S10, and I’ve seen nothing after that. I will one day, probably.

Adam not “deserving” a redemption arc is bullshit
Y’all were thinking I was just gonna write about my unpopular opinion as an Adam stan but ha! Maybe read this to see why i think Adam still might not be entirely gone
I see this everywhere one tumblr and reddit whenever someone brings up the words “adam” and “redemption arc” in the same sentence. But the notion that someone doesn’t “deserve” a redemption arc is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard off. I’m gonna start with telling you all what a redemption arc actually is, where it’s been done and then we’ll get ot the subject of Adam Taurus who doesn’t “not deserve” a redemption arc but rather, is a character that doesn’t need to and just wouldn’t work out as “a good guy”.
What is a character arc? According to wikipedia it’s “The transformation or inner journey or character over the course of a story. If a story has a character arc, the character begins as one sort of person and gradually transforms into a different sort of person in response to changing developments in the story”
What is redemption? “an act of redeeming or atoning for a fault or mistake, or the state of being redeemed.”, or in a more religious context “ The action of saving or being saved from sin, error, or evil”.
A redemption arc is not inherently: being easily forgiven by the one you’ve done wrong to. An arc suggests a gradual change, it’s a journey that changes one of the defining character traits a character has, how, why and to what result varies. So basically: your character can, for whatever reason you might think of, change their way of thinking/acting, change a core aspect of themselves, gradually and wether or not the character is “forgiven” at the end has nothing to do with “deserving a redemption arc”. You all mix this up, your reasoning is: Character X has done Y to character Z and he should never be forgiven for that therefore does not deserve a redemption arc. But the character can go through the arc and ultimately not be forgiven. Any character is allowed to review their actions and see wrong in them. There also seems to be some consensus about what line a character has crossed, to be so undeserving (of both redemption and forgiveness) but I’m not sure what it is. The line does not seem to be murder, torture, mutilation, kidnapping, sometimes even genocide. When taking Adam in account, most of the arguments anti’s make is that he’s an abusive stalker ex boyfriend, the murders he committed are rarely referrenced? Some people want mercury and Emeral to be redeemed, even if they murdered hundreds at beacon and Vale. That doesn’t seem to make them “irredeemable” for some reason.
Where do you draw the line of actians that are “redeemable” or “forgivable”? Who gets to decide that? What kind of morality is it based on?
Let’s look at some redemption arcs from different media: Darth vader (Star Wars), Zuko (atla), Agent Kallus (Star Wars Rebels) and Strickler (Trollhunters) Major spoilers alert! Duh
Darth Vader: The most obvious example, Darth vader cut off his son’s hand, slaughtered millions, tortured thousands. There little to no build up to his redemption, his arc isn’t even very gradual he just up and decides to save his son instead of obey his master. Later on the tragedy of his life is revealed but that’s not what this is about. Fans accepted it quite readily. People call it a redemption arc, to my knowledge, we don’t really know if the few who are still alive that he tortured and maimed forgave him but I’m willing to bet they didn’t.
Zuko: atla really is the gold standard for literally everything concernign storytelling ain’t it <3. Zuko’s redemption arc is basically perfect. It’s gradual, he doesn’t just decide to be good one day, he still makes mistakes, struggles with the changes he’s going through. One major point to be taken into consideration: Zuko was never inherently evil in the same way, eg Darth vader was. To my knowledge, his worst crimes were burning down a village (no deaths), kidnapping Katara and trying to capture a 12-year-old kid. It was shown very early on Zuko was never a monster. In the Storm, he values the lives of his crew above his mission, his tragic past is also revealed in that episode, gaining sympathy from the viewer. Later on he reaches out his hand for Zhao who would have gladly wringed Zuko’s neck himself. The fact that Zuko is shown in a sympathetic light early on and continues to be throughout the show is a big reason why his redemption is so perfect and fitting.
Agent Kallus: In Star wars rebels, kallus is at first shown to just be a ruthless ISB operative who participated in the genocide on Lassan and even shows pride in it. Then everything changes when he gets stuck on a frozen ice moon with Zeb a member of the protagonist team. Kallus is semi-retconned into being someone who truly believes in the justice and reign of the Empire, someone who does not enjoy taking lives (despite his smirk when a traitor he revealed gets sentenced to death) and an all round pretty decent person, if only he weren’t on the enemy’s team. Kallus’ redemption later on works out basically because of this episode and later episodes that reinforce his good qualities above his bad. It’s a bit unpolished in my opinion, but it’s a decent arc. He slowly starts to question the empire, ultimately leading to him concluding he’s been in the wrong the entire time and deciding to atone by becoming Fulcrum. Kallus works as a good guy, nonetheless, the moment he’s truly revealed as such, his appearances are significantly fewer in number for a reason.
Strickler: or Stricklander from trollhunters is a case of love redeems all and whatnot. Much like Zuko though, he gets sympathy points very early in the story. he genuinely cares for Jim, he faces racism and bigotry because of his Changeling status and later on, is shown to truly care for Barbara. Despite all of this, he is shown to smirk when miss Nomura gets punished for his mistakes, orders Jim’s death and has no problems with the quasi-enslavement of Angor Rot (yes Angor is a remorseless killer, slavery is still quite bad tho people), he is also manipulative to Barbara and lies straight to her face while also endangering her life multiple times. But still, Strickler gets a redemption. And still it works and still it’s generally accepted. Again the number of appearances Strickler gets once he starts on the redemption part are signifantly less than back when he was the bad guy. He’s still a side character, he didn’t need to become front and center to get the redemption and once it was done he was sidelined again.
I could go on forever about this, the previously mentioned Angor Rot gets a “Redemption equals death”, Scar from fma is “easily forgiven” to some people, Honerva from vld got a mix of redemption equals death and easily forgiven etc etc. Some of these work, others...not so much. but mostly the problem is not “they didn’t deserve it” but more “it was handled poorly”.
On to this bullshit of “not deserving a redemption arc”. I honestly do not know where you’e supposed to draw the line. But even so, there really is no line to draw at all? A redemption arc is a character trying to atone for what they did, anyone can try that? Anyone who realises their mistakes can get a redemption arc. Like I said before it’s not about if they’re deserving to be forgiven or not, it’s about how well the arc is written.
Others argue that people who want Adam to either get a redemption arc or survive just want Adam to be the main character. Somehow they struggle with the idea that a side character can be properly redeemed or changed without taking away the spotlight from the main protagonist forever. If done well, a character needs only a few seconds every episode to indicate change. Adam’s character short is 6 minutes and it shows his descent into madness and evil? Even if you decide that a redemption needs more time for some reason, even double it. That’s barely one (1) episode of rwby. Hardly making Adam the main character considering ozpin and Salem got more than 12 minutes to establish their motives and backstory and didn’t take away from the story one bit. (You can argue that salem is so tied into the story, it doesn’t count but a faunus subplot is easliy added, very much wanted and oh so easily tied into Adam’s story)
Now Adam taurus should not get a redemption arc as he is right now. And quite honestly, I don’t think he should ever get one. Adam works as a villain, he really does, for Adam to become a good guy, you would change not one or two but a lot of core aspects to the character. He wasn’t made to be a good guy, he was made to an antagonist and those are just as valuable to a story as the protagonists. Yes a good redemption story, a good villain turned good story is delightful. But Adam just doesn’t fit the bill. Adam has so many aspects left of his character unexplored, perfect to still be an antagonist, not a protagonist. Adam is violent, a skilled fighter, an opressed minority a person out for vengeance and takes decisive action. Take that all away to let him become a good guy and you’re left with very few things. People who want an Adam redemption arc just want Adam to be someone he’s not, in my opinion. Unless the writers actively set up a redemption arc, it feels out of place. What most of my examples have in common is very clear: their redemption arcs were being set up before the character showed any signs of change. Whether or not those set ups were well done, well timed or “deserved” doesn’t matter. Adam has almost no set up. he has his brand to get the tragic backstory requirement but that doesn’t make him a person who realizes he’s doing the wrong thing. He has his previous hesitance to kill but he lost it literal years ago. Adam is not a good person and there’s no reason, as the show is right now, to make him one. The only way a redemption arc would truly work out for Adam is if the show takes the time to develop him in such a way but I don’t really see that happening. They’re much more likely to just not to a redemption arc at all or rush it if they do, ruining not just adam as a character but probably harming their central story as well (aka the good vs evil motif they’re playing)
Coming full circle with the post I wrote earlier: Adam can get out of this with fundemental differences to what he was without becoming an entirely new person. As an antagonist with a new purpose narratively speaking but also in general but not as a goodie-two shoes unless it’s set up properly.

ALSO-look at confused as fuck Qrow here, he’s all “Uh...hi.” OH-he’s gonna drink himself into a coma after all of this is done.
BUT-not only does Ozma BRAVE the evil forces of the castle to reach Salem for ONLY pure motives(Jinn said so so its true)-HE ALSO-

-which is also in its own way VERY beautiful, nice use of dark colors and purple, kinda looks like Cybertron when it was infected by Dark Energon!
Salem’s here to seek out the God of Darkness, whom after seeing Antler Jesus’ striking albeit minimalist god form, I’M SURE-the god of Darkness’ form isn’t utterly creep-

So...yeah...HOLY SHIT-there’s a lot to take away here! For ONE-its interesting noting how tragic a villain Salem was, and how Oz spent so much time avoiding his fate because he just wanted to be with the woman he loved. FURTHERMORE-its neat how Salem is now like, Lord Garmadon in that destructive impulses BURN through her veins...but also like Lord Garmadon, she was still able to love. Sadly though...her worse impulses got the best of her, and now she has nothing to do but move forward and Thanos the planet, because there is NO going back to the good old days.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 10/04/2021 (Olivia Rodrigo, Demi Lovato)
Well, I guess it’s a pretty slow week – at least more than I had predicted – given that I thought Demi Lovato and Olivia Rodrigo would make a lot more of a genuine impact high up in the chart than they actually did. I can’t really predict the chart accurately at all in those conclusion segments considering I write and release these episodes even before first-day streaming numbers are released, but I at least expected Rodrigo to debut in the top 10. Alas, we have kind of an unexpected filler week, before Taylor Swift impacts the charts next week – I think that prediction’s enough of a safe bet to be right, right? Anyways, Lil Nas X’s “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)” stays at #1 for a second week that I didn’t see coming, and let’s just start REVIEWING THE CHARTS.
Rundown
Now I talk about music that is purposefully out of my comfort zone on this series – the music is accessible, sure, because it’s charting music but not all of it is in genres and scenes or by artists I know a hell of a lot about or have listened to repeatedly. Hence, I don’t tend to talk about my own music taste often on here, because of two reasons: one being that I’m unsure it even exists and can be summed up in a sentence, and two being, well... according to Spotify’s “On Repeat” playlist, I’ve been listening to “Paralyzer” by Finger Eleven an obscene amount this past week – if you had to make a Cactus Chart, it would probably debut at #1 15 years after the fact. Now, ignoring the fact that I kind of do want to make that chart, which I probably can with last.fm, I’m sure that will quell any need to talk about my own deeply embarrassing musical habits on this page ever again. Now, moving from the Cactus Single Charts to the UK Top 75, which is what I cover, we can see that there’s been some minimal action on all fronts.
In terms of our drop-outs, we do have a couple notable ones, including both of Fredo’s songs as ACR cuts their streaming numbers and hence, rather unfairly and inaccurately, “Money Talks” with Dave and “Ready” featuring Summer Walker both exit the top 75. I guess they were on their way out eventually, and some ACR-affected songs have indeed survived this week, but it’s still annoying to see for songs that are contemporary and still popular. Otherwise, we have “Wants and Needs” by Drake featuring Lil Baby exiting, as well as some genuinely big hits from this Winter, those being “Good Days” by SZA, “Whoopty” by CJ – finally – and “you broke me first” by Tate McRae after 35 long weeks. Now the charts are no longer addicted to blue cheese, what’s filling in the gaps?
Well, we only have one returning entry, that being “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac, a song that seemingly cannot stay dead, not that I’m complaining. What’s more interesting is what’s on the chart itself, as we do have some notable climbers and fallers. For the notable losses, we have “Good Without” by Mimi Webb at #23 off of the debut, “Patience” by KSI, YUNGBLUD and Polo G at #24, “Anyone” by Justin Bieber at #31, “6 for 6” by Central Cee at #37, “Blinding Lights” by the Weeknd still here at #38, HVME’s remix of Travis Scott’s “Goosebumps” at #39, “Head & Heart” by Joel Corry and MNEK finally dropping out of the top 40 at #41, “What’s Next” by Drake continuing to collapse at #49, taking “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” with Rick Ross at #51 along with it, “telepatía” by Kali Uchis at #56, “Mood” by 24kGoldn and iann dior at #62, “Sweet Melody” by Little Mix at #66, “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi finally making way for an exit at #68, “Bringing it Back” by Digga D and AJ Tracey at #69, “Cloud 9” by Beach Bunny sadly at #70 off of the debut and finally, “You’re Mines Still” by Yung Bleu featuring Drake at #72.
What’s shocking to me is the little impact that both Demi Lovato and Lil Tjay had, showing that people might just not care about these artists past their singles. Sure, we got some tracks from both of them – that are already being pushed as singles – but on Lovato’s side, “What Other People Say” didn’t move an inch and we only got minimal gains for Lil Tjay’s “Headshot” and “Calling My Phone”, which I expected to go back into the top 40 and top 10 respectively. In terms of our actually notable climbers, well, we have “Mr. Brightside” by the Killers going for a fiftieth chart run at #67, “Beautiful Mistakes” by Maroon 5 featuring Megan Thee Stallion at #60, “Don’t You Worry About Me” by Bad Boy Chiller Crew surging up to #53, Tom Zanetti getting his first top 40 hit with the garbage “Didn’t Know” at #40, “Black Hole” by Griff at #33, Majestic’s remix of Boney M.’s “Rasputin” at #29, “Ferrari Horses” by D-Block Europe and RAYE at #22, and that’s about it other than our single notable change in the top 20, that being “Millions” by Russ Millions and Tion Wayne up to #13 off of the debut, despite being an absolutely worthless song. In fact, it’s looking pretty dire in the top 20 in general, I’m starting to hope that my Cactus Charts actually had any impact. Regardless, we still have eight new arrivals to discuss, so let’s start right at the bottom.
NEW ARRIVALS
#73 – “Film out” – BTS

Now, BTS occasionally releases songs for the Japanese market, a common practice for K-pop bands – as far as I know – and this one in particular was marketed only in Japan for a Japanese film. Therefore, I think I was pretty reasonable in thinking this wouldn’t even get close to charting, but I should never underestimate the power of BTS fans buying digital singles. After all, that’s what kept “Dynamite” on the chart for as long as it had its run. Now, I’m not well-versed in J-pop at all other than some brief dives into city pop and picopop – both of which I enjoyed thoroughly – so I didn’t really know what to expect but it does make perfect sense to me that the boys are crooning over a cleanly-produced, theatrical piano-lead instrumental. Given that there’s a post-chorus consisting almost entirely of “ooh-ooh, la-la-la-la” about 45 seconds in, I gave up entirely in terms of lyrical content, although reading some of RM’s translated lyrics in particular makes it seem oddly poetic. How does it sound? Well, exactly as I’d described it: the boys are reigning themselves into to a more subtle instrumental and whilst some of the multi-tracking is distracting and each of the parts don’t really flow as well as they wanted it to, especially due to the loud vocal mixing which definitely overshadows the impact of the wonderful string swells in the final chorus and gives you enough audio-wise to completely ignore the trap-adjacent percussion. The song’s fine and I do like the inflections of acoustic guitar especially, but I’m not really impressed by this, not that I was supposed to – it’s a Japanese soundtrack song, it’ll be gone tomorrow and I’m sure the audience there is enjoying it more than I can.
#64 – “Summer 91 (Looking Back)” – Noizu

Now if you don’t know how Noizu is, I can’t blame you as neither did I. I quickly found out he was another house producer and this track that had been released in January had just gained enough steam to debut this week. The guy has been in EDM production for a while and was immediately cosigned by people like Skrillex and Diplo, and he seems to hide behind this cartoon character for branding and anonymity’s sake, which I can’t blame him for when I consider the public images of both Skrillex and Diplo. The song, originally just called “Summer 91”, was remixed for a major-label release on RCA, and it’s about what you’d expect. It’s a deep house track with a driving 90s MIDI piano melody, uncredited female vocals that can’t even get close to the power of those diva house vocals from decades before and a anti-climactic drop with some cheap percussion. The chorus actually sounds a lot like “Body” by Loud Luxury and brando from one or two years ago, so it’s not even that original in its main hook, though I can give it credit for the synth-work being more sci-fi and kind of interesting, and its song structure being increasingly disjointed, even moreso than the typical house-pop track that debuts low on these charts, which means a lot less when the song has so little tricks up its sleeve. And no, the 220 KID remix isn’t any good either, in fact, it’s a lot worse.
#63 – “Run it Up” – Lil Tjay featuring Offset and Moneybagg Yo

I tried to listen to that Lil Tjay record and within five tracks decided it was absolutely not worth my time, so I’m glad we only have a single song from the album debuting, though I am surprised that it seems to be the borderline posse cut that runs for nearly four minutes and I’m immediately disappointed. I know how all three of these guys can flow and how fast and high-energy all of they can be, as well as how smooth Offset always is, so why is this beat such a dull, piano-lead sludge with gross bass mixing? Why is Lil Tjay wasting my time both content- and delivery-wise, flubbing rhymes to the point where he doesn’t even bother finishing the line, even when he cops Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” flow in the middle of his verse? Why is the chorus just “Run it up” repeated ad infinitum with no energy? Okay, so it’s not all bad – Offset impresses flow-wise as he always does, trying his hardest to inject some energy into this with his ad-libs and constantly changing flow, because at least he has a personality and some charisma, but even he stops trying by the end of his verse. Moneybagg Yo channels 2 Chainz but without anything that makes 2 Chainz a worthwhile presence for a verse that somehow ends up as the best, most consistent here, and, yeah, I now know me skipping the majority of this record was a good choice.
#59 – “Runaway” – AURORA

I know nothing about AURORA, and I was pretty confident I wouldn’t need to past her John Lewis advert success and her part on the Frozen II soundtrack of all places, but alas, she’s charting again with no kind of visual phenomenon attached to it. AURORA is a Norwegian singer-songwriter on the same wavelength as Bjork and hence the eye of a lot of critical success that doesn’t necessarily translate always into album sales. She has seen intermittent success with singles so I assumed this had just been somewhat of a breakout single from her newest record... but no, it’s from her first album and the single was released all the way back in February of 2015. So, naturally, you’ve got to assume TikTok and you would be correct, but is the song good? Well, the vocal loop double-tracked to act as a synth melody and eventually a choir is kind of a cool idea, and AURORA herself has this frail, accented delivery that’s definitely endearing. The song itself is about escapism and running away from confronting your emotions and the writing is good, even if it tends to be a bit messy if more attention is placed onto it, particularly in the verses. That’s not to distract from the fact that this is absolutely a song from 2015 as if you couldn’t tell from the percussion you can tell from the future bass-esque that’s almost cringeworthy in its anti-climactic entrance and doesn’t even really work at all, especially when it just disappears prematurely. I get going for a glitch-pop thing but it just does not make sense in a ballad like this, in fact, I’m finding it hard to find a part that could be used in a TikTok. The second drop works a little better because AURORA has more conviction in her desperate vocal delivery that sounds legitimately great, but I still think there’s such little impact in the percussion that the blend of synths and strings becomes ultimately just a distraction from what could have been a decent piano ballad. It makes it more interesting, for sure, but also more frustrating. Much like Ryn Weaver’s “Pierre”, also a 2015 indie-pop track suddenly charting six years after the fact a couple weeks ago, there’s a good song hidden somewhere in shoddy and awkward production. I really wish I could have liked this more.
#50 – “Dancing with the Devil” – Demi Lovato

Okay, so our next two songs are both from Demi Lovato’s comeback album, Dancing with the Devil...the Art of Starting Over, an album that if anything I am glad exists as it is a catharsis for Demi Lovato that needed to be released as it discusses her overdose, rehab, last relationship and everything both leading up to those events and the aftermath of them. The album isn’t perfect but feels open, revealing and most importantly an honest release for Demi Lovato and I think that’s worthy of praise in itself. As a 19-track album, it is bloated but does have enough sonic experimentation in the pop sphere for it not to grow stale, and I think there are great songs in there – it’s a good album – but you can already tell it’ll be dated soon enough, not that that’s really a problem now in 2021, but might hurt future revisits, especially with some of the production that already sounds awkward. Thankfully, we get two pretty down-beat and dark tracks from the record, which is where it usually shines, the first being the (half-)title track, released just a week before, and it’s pretty excellent. This soulful track builds itself on echoed percussion, subtle piano and Demi stumbling purposefully through verses detailing her mindset when she drinks alcohol and soon enough ends up “dancing with the Devil” and taking harder drugs like cocaine and heroin in the second verse. Musically, the chorus does struggle with some awkward mixing that makes the strings and instrumentation kind of pile up in a blend that sounds a lot louder than it should be, especially when everything is layered up to make each instrument indistinguishable and unrecognisable, pushing Demi’s vocals to the middle and forcing each multi-tracked ad-lib and vocal run to barely fit in the mix. I love this song from a songwriting standpoint even if it tends to be a bit blunt, but it definitely suffers from this production, which is mostly fixed in...
#44 – “Met Him Last Night” – Demi Lovato featuring Ariana Grande

This is my favourite song on the record by a fairly big margin, as everything seems to work here, in a way that doesn’t happen across the rest of the album. The song goes for a similar metaphor with the Devil being illicit substances, something that’s been done before and will continue to be done for eons, but Demi and the songwriters do go for a more unique take on it, picturing both Demi and Ariana in a bar or some kind of late-night hang-out as they “see the Devil” – really, seeing themselves at a low point partaking in substance abuse, which is a really interesting and potentially heart-wrenching perspective, especially if we’re going to get the duality of the chorus being self-aware of these vices but ultimately indulging in them anyway, compared to the verses and bridge where Ariana acts as Demi’s consciousness, vowing and pleading with her never to let drugs “take advantage of her innocence” again. The bridge is just wonderful in how the interplay between Ariana and Demi leads to Demi confronting these vices and promising that she won’t ever end up this bad again, before the truth is revealed by Ariana twisting the pre-chorus. Originally, it’s a threat to “the Devil” – that she can see right through the initial appeal of taking hard drugs and will try her hardest to dismiss them – but with the added context of that bridge, becomes a pretty telling response to Demi’s confidence, shutting her down by saying she sees through this facade of willpower and that she’ll still resort to substance abuse once again... which is sadly reinforced by that final, striking chorus that doesn’t change at all from the first, constructing a narrative that ends up going full-circle as Demi is back to where she started. It helps that this instrumental is downright demonic as well, with those menacing 80s synths sliding over some gorgeous violins in the intro, before all of that cuts out for the pre-chorus as that leering melody is whispered by both singers, and the chorus continues to rise with the strings, synthesised brass and the sparse percussion, which drops in Ariana’s verse to become a booming, drill-adjacent beat not afraid to cut out for Ariana’s multi-tracked humming. In fact, I love how organically this beat moves despite it being so obviously programmed, with the swelling of those strings before every impact and the intricate vocal sequencing making sure every gorgeous vocal run and ad-lib is heard. I’m almost glad I’m confident in this not becoming a hit because I would have already talked it to death here before it gets a chance to top my best list, as this is one of the most brilliantly-constructed pop songs I’ve ever heard and absolutely deserves your attention.
#43 – “Nice to Meet Ya” – Wes Nelson featuring Yxng Bane

And now for some guy featuring some other guy produced by another guy. To give full credit, this beat is actually very well-produced, especially with that gorgeous piano lead in before the reggaeton-esque drum rhythm kicks in alongside those squeaky horns. It’s everywhere else where this song collapses in on itself, as Wes Nelson’s voice is drenched in so much Auto-Tune and reverb that it just sounds grossly cheap, with some comical ad-libs and some comically bad lyrics in this chorus, which I’ll repeat to you now. In a rather Shakespearean tone, our lead artist plays poetic word association with the hedonistic lifestyle of one Wes Nelson, excitedly greeting the listener with a “Nice to meet you”, before striking our deserved attention with his simplistic albeit bitingly effective rhymes. “Stepped in froze, freezer. Christian Dior, huh? Christian Dior, Jesus.” I don’t expect Nas from this guy but I at least expect bars that makes some kind of sense and don’t sound like juvenile attempts at early 2010s Drake-esque hashtag-rap. The song continues to waste the potential of its pretty great production as Wes Nelson strains his voice and somehow still ends up mumbling in his off-beat flow and janky cadence. Yxng Bane is, I hate to say it, probably the best part of this track, as at least he can convincingly sing and his detailed description of him messing around with a vegan girl (which has no relation to what he says, but he still says it) is at least more interesting lyrically than whatever Wes Nelson’s saying. “I met her in Victoria’s Secret then she let me into her Victoria’s secrets” is about as awful as a line when sang as it is read, and I mean, Wes Nelson’s falsetto doesn’t do him much justice in the unnecessary third verse either, so, yeah, this is a pretty crap attempt at riding a great beat. Give this to Rema or Burna Boy and something could have been done with this.
#27 – “deja vu” – Olivia Rodrigo

Finally, we have the follow-up single to Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license”, a song I liked, and I’m glad I did because so did Olivia herself and her producer Dan Nigro, as here we have essentially a sequel if not a reboot to that song. Here, Rodrigo starts to question the authenticity of Joshua Bassett’s new Disney-ordered relationship with Sarah Carpenter—I mean, her unnamed ex-boyfriend’s new fling with another woman. It’s an interesting take to have Rodrigo in a place where somewhat sympathises and pities the new girlfriend, as she’s not getting anything unique or new from her ex-boyfriend anymore. In fact, a lot of this song is really confrontational as she demands the boyfriend to tell his new girlfriend that all the stuff he’s doing with her is what he did with Rodrigo. That’s all fine and good but how does the song sound? Well, it’s got a bell-based instrumental, almost one that’s childish and intimidating, which is perfect for the petty selfishness of the content. In fact, the song as a whole seems to attempt to go for that, with the hilariously multi-tracked and echoed fake laughter in the first verse, as well as all of the extra inflections and backing vocals throughout. The song builds in a very similar way to “drivers license”, but drops earlier into a killer indie-rock groove with a squealing guitar and incredibly distorted drum pattern, almost reminding me of a Flaming Lips song if that’s not too far-fetched of a comparison. This song ultimately does enough to derive and distinguish itself from “drivers license” and whilst it’s not as smooth of a powerful pop track as that one was, and the mixing here is definitely more awkward, we get a different side to Olivia Rodrigo that we’re not to have as much sympathy for. Sure, we know how tough the feeling of being replaced is, but she’s noticeably pettier and arguably kind of unlikeable especially in that bridge, which is a lot more fast-paced than the rest of the song and also has somewhat gratuitous swearing because this is still a formula. Overall, I think this is a pretty great song and I might ultimately prefer it to “drivers license” just out of how it sounds and I’m always happy to see more genuine rock on the chart, so I’m glad we end on a good note.
Conclusion
And on said note, Olivia Rodrigo cops the Honourable Mention for “deja vu” – not that there was much competition – with the Best of the Week going to “Met Him Last Night” by Demi Lovato featuring Ariana Grande. For Worst of the Week, it’s really not that easy as I thought it would be as not much here is that bad at all. I guess I’ll give it to Lil Tjay once again as “Run it Up” featuring Offset and Moneybagg Yo is just joyless, with a Dishonourable Mention for Wes Nelson and Yxng Bane for just crapping all over a great instrumental on “Nice to Meet Ya”. Anyway, here’s this week’s top 10:

SPOTLIGHT: My relationship to failure

It’s a kind of way for me to look back on all of my experiences, and lessons I’ve learned, while simultaneously sharing what I’ve learned with you. Therefore, this is not the gospel or the truth, it’s just me sharing MY experiences in an effort to assist, if possible, in other people’s discovery (end disclaimer). Today, I’m taking a small break from my A+B=C method which focuses on “Brian’s B’s” (Being, Behavior, and Business), to talk about something that I think we all encounter….FAILURE.
I post a lot about success and achievement in this blog site in the form of strategies I have developed, and even my own wins. Recently, I had been feeling like a very big failure. Therefore, today, I’m going to talk to you about my failures. My failures far outperform my successes, and couple of weeks ago I was feeling out of sorts, and had been feeling that way for about a week or so. The day I started writing this, I ended up going to the gym, doing a Zumba class, and afterwards listening to Jem & the Holograms’ “We Can Change It” on repeat (because it’s one of the most positive and uplifting songs I’ve ever heard…Not only that, but it takes me back to a much simpler time in my life, and always puts a smile on my face). So there I was listening to Jem, while doing what I call a “White Boy Workout”. You know, the kind where you lift the heaviest weights possible and angry grunt a lot. White boys, please don’t be offended. As the late, great Joan Rivers said, “It’s a fucking joke!” lol :) At any rate, I often do that kind of workout when I’m letting off steam, and I REALLY needed to let off some steam because I was feeling like a complete and total failure. Why? Well, let me give you some details to set up my current situation. It started with a list of unfortunate events at the end of 2016. First, the big named clients for whom I normally worked, and who provided me with over 70% of my annual income, were not hiring for 2017. I also found out in mid-2017 that they weren’t going to be hiring for the second year in a row. Second, my assistance from said jobs had expired at the end of 2017. Third, my agent, who provided the remainder/other portion of my income (and with whom I’d been signed for the last nine years), decided to shut down the agency and close their doors for good. Fourth, around this time multiple members of my family were contacting me in a near desperate state because my other parent was also experiencing what were percieved as a potential major health concern. Fifth, and last but not least, my living situation had become even more toxic…again (that’s an entire essay in itself, and one I’ll save for another day). The culmination of all these things forced me to make a very big change in my life, which was to move from the nest I’d created for myself over the last 14 years in San Francisco, and try a new market. So I packed up my things, and headed for Los Angeles to live with my adoptive brother. Now I am in a new market, where no one knows me, and no one knows my work history, talents, or my work ethic. Not to mention, I had to utilize my savings and have also accumulated a bit of debt over the past two years just trying to survive and stay afloat. This brings me to my situation from a few weeks ago where I was feeling kind of lost and alone, and without any income or upcoming work. For all intents and purposes, I’m essentially completely starting over in my life in nearly every way. Needless to say, I have been feeling like a GIANT failure. In addition, after reviewing my annual business plan only days before, I reviewed my list of goals. By nature they should take me to the next level of my career, but I am now living in a place where I’m a nobody and can’t see how to achieve these new goals. This for me highlighted the fact that I was once again a giant failure in life…period. Yet, there’s that word ‘once again’. I have been here before, and I’m willing to bet that many others have either felt like this, or have also been in similar situations; Especially other performers. So how do I (we) transform my (our) failures into successes? I’m guessing the answer lies in failing some more.
FAIL MORE TO ENDURE
In a previous post, where I discussed my approach to making a living as an actor, I mention that statistically the average performer (specifically actor) only books 10% of every thing for which they might audition. Utilizing this statistic against the average day rate of pay for the market in which I lived (San Francisco), I calculated that I would need to attend approximately 25-30 auditions per month just to break even on monthly expenses. Keep in mind if you look at this another way, this would mean that I would be failing to book approximately 23-27 times EACH MONTH! That means over the last 7 years, I failed to book a job over 1,900 times. Many of them were very VERY good paying jobs that could’ve taken me many other places. To exemplify, there were approximately 4 big budget SAG national commercials in that mix, all of them paying what would have been the equivalent of my annual salary. I was placed on a hold/check avail for all of them…and I booked none of them; Failed. I won’t even go into detail about the network tv show for which I was being strongly considered. Long story short, the director received my name and resume from a mutual friend, but after reviewing my materials, he said that he “wouldn’t waste putting me in a supporting role”; Failed! Yes, that’s only a couple of examples to help illustrate how my failures have far outweighed my successes. But much like my equation for breaking even on monthly expenses while living in San Francisco, the equation for success is similar. Failing a lot ensures achieving at least 10% success from failures. So I have to go out there and fail s’more! Why? Well, first off it’s how we build durability.
The very first audition I attended was in Pittsburgh, PA and it was for a toothpaste commercial. I had just been introduced to theatre in high school, and was performing in the spring musical for the first time. I went into the audition and naturally I totally BOMBED IT! I was completely horrible and even though I felt as though I was invincible, I had absolutely NO IDEA what I was doing. Needless to say, I didn’t get the job, and I knew it as soon as I left the audition room. I cried for the longest time and didn’t attend an audition again for probably a year. Which of course was next year’s school spring musical audition. While in high school I built up a small ability to endure these auditions and it got stronger and stronger each year. Cut to twenty five years later, I now find the audition process to be a normal thing. Although I still experience nerves, it’s become normal and natural for me and I’ve built up a kind of inoculation to it where I can navigate it much better. I’ve built up a durability to it. Durability is one of the coolest after effects of failing often. The more we fail, the more durable we become so that things don’t have such a crippling effect on us.
FAIL MORE TO MASTER
Another great after effect of more failures, is mastery and/or learning. For this, I always think of one example in particular. I was on set with another actor one day and he was talking about things that inspired him, and how many actors often aren’t very good in their early years. He used the example of Eva Longoria, and he claimed that she wasn’t very good during her early soap opera days. I stopped him and asked him if he knew about the conditions under which soap opera actors operate. He admitted he didn’t know, and so I told him. A lot of the time, soap opera actors are given scripts merely minutes or hours before shooting. This can also sometimes be true of many other episodic television as well. The business side of much of entertainment operates so quickly that it doesn’t always leave the adequate space or room for in depth actor preparation. Specifically soap operas. So when he saw Eva Longoria, he saw someone who was probably new to the business and hadn’t had practice operating under those kinds of circumstances. After hearing this, the actor with whom I was working, better understood the circumstances under which Eva was operating (EVERYONE has different circumstances in life, and it’s always great to keep this in mind). This was a great example of someone who failed in order to master. Once Ms. Longoria had an understanding of the system, she knew how to work with it and even began mastering it. This was evident in her work on other shows in the future as she really kicked some ass on screen!
I have failed like that in many ways. The only difference is that I used San Francisco as my training ground for a lot of it. A few of the things I was mediocre at during the beginning of my stay in SF were: acting for the camera (I started in theatre so everything started too big), TelePrompTer, stunts for camera, and voiceover. When I first began each of these I sucked ass. I was horrible, but I kept working on each of them and became good. Some came easier than others, but I knew getting good was important because by the time I got back to LA I would need to be ready and prepared to work. My previous experience of LA was that the city and entertainment industry was a business and those who were actually working wanted to work with people who could work at their level and could contribute to efficiency and profitability. That means a mastery of job skills. Right now the skill I’m learning is moving to a new market. I’m in the early phases, and I’m failing (EPICALLY) at the moment, but I’m slowly learning how to master it. After I’ve mastered it, I’ll be ready to do the next step, which I believe, is to climb that ladder of success!
FAIL MORE TO CLIMB
Once we are able to build up durability and master our skills, we can then more effectively and efficiently climb the ladder of success. The ladder of success is often a difficult climb without strength, durability, grit, thorough skills, and developed talents. Usually, when ascending any kind of ladder, each step is more and more challenging; Requiring more evolved skills and responsibilities. But know that the more you fail, it’s very likely that you’ll be able to climb faster and easier.
CONCLUSION
Personally, I work hard, which means that I also fail hard. Every time that you see one of my successes, that often (but not always) means I’ve failed exponentially just to get there. In the past, I have failed many many times. I’ve failed at auditions, I’ve failed at tasks, and I’ve even failed at achievement. Currently, I’m failing in a major way in my transition into a new market. However, failure is a natural part of the equation for success. We often think that failures are the end all and be all of our endeavors. However, that mindset prevents us from gaining many of it’s benefits. Because, in fact, the sooner we can perceive and internalize the benefits of failure, the better. The more we fail, learn from our failures, and build up our durability to failures, the sooner we can climb the ladder of success. So I invite you all to look at failure through this lens. Change your conversation about it. Because it’s then, that you can watch failure work in your favor!

Summary: Who is Richard Simmons? The question’s been on his mind lately, driving him mad all day and keeping him up all night. It doesn’t help that Tucker’s been pointing out how much he and Gene are alike every time he gets a chance.

It doesn’t help that Tucker’s been pointing out how much he and Gene are alike every time he gets a chance.
Sarge is still so sleep deprived, Simmons isn’t sure the guy knows his name, let alone realizes he’s called Simmons “Gene” eight times now.
Caboose has been calling him Gene Simmons (Simmons isn’t sure if this is a step up or a step down from ‘Simons’) since they met the Blues and Reds. No surprise there—Simmons isn’t even sure if Caboose is in on the joke. He called Agent Washington ‘Church’ for months.
Even Temple, who’s known Gene longer, messed up earlier that day:
“Geeeyimmons?” Simmons can hear the cringe in Temple’s voice when he realizes his mistake.
“I’m Simmons. Sim-mons,” Simmons sighs. “Honestly, we’re nothing alike!”
“Sorry,” Temple apologizes. “It’s just… you do have the same color armor. And you sound exactly the same.”
“His visor is blue!” Simmons points out.
“It is, sure, but I can’t see that when your back’s to me,” Temple says.
“We’re still nothing alike,” Simmons mumbles. Wash doesn’t say anything, just kind of looks awkwardly to the left.
Simmons sighs.
“Did you need something?” he asks.
“Actually, I was looking for Gene,” Temple admits.
“Ugh… he went that way,” Simmons says, gesturing off down a hallway to his right.
“Hey thanks, G—Simmons,” Temple says. Simmons watches him disappear down the hall.
He knows Temple didn’t mean anything by it, that Caboose is just confused, and Sarge is more zombie than human right now. In fact, the only person doing it on purpose is Tucker.
That somehow makes it worse.
Simmons finds himself glaring at his reflection in the mirror while the shower runs behind him, still in armor from the waist down, wondering what Gene looks like under his helmet.
Probably isn’t a cyborg, Simmons thinks. I’ve got that going for me.
And who knows if Gene is Dutch-Irish, right? If he even came from Earth.
Bet he can’t play the banjo.
Also, Gene doesn’t have a Grif. But… neither does Simmons, not anymore. It’s not that Simmons needs Grif to define him, it’s just. Simmons can let down his guard around Grif, can be himself around Grif. Sure, there was always teasing, but at the end of the day, Grif was a friend.
More than a friend.
He wishes Grif was here, to tell him to quit being an idiot.
If Grif was here, he’d be just as happy to point out how alike Gene and I am. Simmons knows this, but somehow, it’s different—different from Tucker’s jokes and Temple’s mix-ups.
It’s like—It’s like this. Grif calls Simmons a kiss-ass, Simmons retorts that Grif’s a fatass. They cross their arms and glare at each other. Five seconds later they’re talking about some of life’s greatest mysteries, or the worst superpower ever, their fight so stupid they’ve already forgotten it.
For years, they’ve had each other’s backs. There have certainly been days Simmons wants to punch Grif in his smug little face—but he’s not too stupid to realize Grif feels the same way about him. For years, they’ve enjoyed each other’s company, laughed at each other’s dumb jokes over a bottle of shitty moonshine, stood and faced down death together.
But now.
Now, apparently, Grif didn’t need him. Hated him even.
Simmons feels rage begin to boil in his stomach, fiery and dangerously close to overflowing. He’s felt this way a lot lately.
Fuck him. He thinks. After everything they’ve been through, everything they talked about, dreamt about, for Grif to just. Fucking say. ‘I quit’? Fuck him.
Simmons hates that, once again, his mind turned to the one thing he didn’t want to think about. Ever.
Shaking his head, he tries to focus on his reflection in the mirror, only to find it’s fogged up. He takes his hand and wipes it across the mirror, but even then, the face staring back at him is distorted and slowly fading behind fresh steam.
He waits until he can no longer see his reflection, then he sighs, finishes undressing, and gets in the shower.

Clean and sufficiently scalded, Simmons turns off the water and pulls on his pajama pants. It’s not until he’s brushing his teeth that he realizes his helmet’s on the counter behind him.
Funny. Pretty sure I left that in my room…
Spitting out toothpaste, Simmons moves over to his helmet. At first, he thinks it’s the lighting, but after a moment’s inspection, he realizes someone tampered with its visor.
And now it’s blue. Like Gene’s.
“Son of a bitch!” he yells. Without thinking, he takes his helmet and flings it across the bathroom.
It connects with the mirror and Simmons watches, blank-faced, as cracks spiderweb up the glass. There’s the telltale tinkling as shards fall, most of them landing on the counter and sink underneath.
Simmons realizes he’s been clenching his fists, and he looks down as he slowly relaxes his fingers. He can still see the scars (You wanna talk about it?) from where he punched the mirror in Blood Gulch.
At least it was my helmet and not my hand this time, Simmons thinks. He shuffles up to the broken mirror and peers into the sink. A dozen red-faced Simmons glare back at him, wide eyed and angry.
Simmons grabs his helmet and leaves the mess for someone else to deal with.

“Gene!” Temple barks from his office.
Here we go. Simmons sighs. He turns into Temple’s office, ready to give his “I’m Simmons” spiel for the fifth time today.
Before Simmons can say anything though, the door slides shut behind him and Temple, in the process of pulling his helmet on, says,
“It’s done.”
“What?”
“Agents Washington and Carolina are with the other Freelancers,” Temple says. He laughs, and Simmons feels chills slither down his spine.
“We’re all taking bets as to how long they survive down there,” Temple goes on. “My money’s on Carolina holding out the longest, but Surge thinks maybe Washington will outlive her.”
“Ah,” is all Simmons can manage.
“Well? What do you think, Gene?” Temple asks.
“Uh, well, I think that Carolina is the more… more logical choice,” Simmons says. Whatthefuckwhatthefuck—“I mean, isn’t she like, uh, wasn’t she the best Freelancer?”
“That she was,” Temple says. He sounds far away, and there’s a brief moment of silence in which Simmons is sure he’s going to be found out, sure that Temple can hear his mechanical heart going ape shit. But then Temple shakes his head.
“I need you to help me keep an eye on that reporter,” Temple says. “The Reds and Blues need watching too, of course, but they’re nowhere near as big a threat as she is.”
“Of course, sir,” Simmons says. “I’ll, uh, get right on it then?”
Temple nods dismissively and turns to stare out his window. A whale passes by. It might be amazing if Simmons wasn’t scared shitless.
Simmons takes slow, deliberate steps as he leaves Temple’s office, resisting the urge to sprint as fast as he can to warn the others.
Simmons counts his lucky stars Tucker thought it was funny to mess with his visor.

He knew coming back was going to be hard, knew there was a lot of shit he was going to have to answer for. He even expected getting shot at.
But Grif never fucking expected this.
This has got to be the most cliché, movie bullshit of all time, Grif thinks.
He’d complain about it if he didn’t have his gun aimed right down the middle of two Simmons. Fucking two of them, as if one kiss ass wasn’t enough.
They’re aiming their weapons at each other, babbling back and forth. They haven’t noticed him yet, and Grif is tempted to turn around and get the fuck out of there.
But he can’t.
“What the fuck is this bullshit?” he demands, his voice hitching slightly.
The Simmonses (Grif hates this) whip their heads around to face Grif.
“Grif?” the one on the left says.
“Oh, Grif, thank god you’re here,” the one on the right says. Grif is immediately suspicious of that one.
Simmons wouldn’t be happy to see him. Not after what he said on the moon.
The Simmons on the left is still staring at him, face inscrutable behind his visor. Why is it blue? Was it always blue?
“Don’t just stand there, fat ass,” the Simmons on the right snaps, “Fucking shoot him!”
Okay, maybe that one is the real Simmons.
“Shut up, kiss ass,” Grif says, “How do I even know you’re Simmons?”
“H—he’s not!” Left Simmons (Grif is confusing himself now) finally speaks up. “I’m Simmons!”
“Nuh-uh, I am!” Right Simmons argues.
Grif is starting to get a headache.
“C’mon, Grif,” Right Simmons says, “You know me!”
“The only thing I know is you’re both being a pain in the ass!” Grif snaps. He has the sudden urge to just shoot them both and be done with it.
“Hey, fuck you,” Left Simmons says. “You don’t have two guns pointed at your face!”
That’s when Grif realizes he’s slowly started moving his gun to aim it at Left Simmons. He jerks it back so it’s centered again.
The Simmonses still have their guns aimed at each other. Both have blue visors, and both are shouting at him with the same frantic voice.
“Shut up!” Grif shouts. Left Simmons huffs and Right Simmons sputters a short protest before going silent.
Grif can hear gunfire from elsewhere in the base. They don’t have time for this, Kai is up there on her own, and while Grif doesn’t doubt his sister’s abilities, he’s worried there are more doubles upstairs. Is there a copy of him? Would Kai realize it?
Then it hits him.
He knows how to figure out which Simmons is his Simmons.
“What happened at the Vegas Quadrant?” He asks.

Of all the questions he could’ve asked, it had to be about the fucking Vegas Quadrant. Simmons wants to scream.
What happened at the Vegas Quadrant? Absolutely nothing.
Well, nothing to write home about.
They went out, they got shitfaced, they went back to their hotel, they ordered a pizza, then they crashed while watching Battlestar Galactica.
It was the best night Simmons ever had, and he hasn’t had a better one ever since. It’s the night he realized he would follow Grif anywhere, because he couldn’t begin to imagine the universe without that fatass by his side.
But Simmons hadn’t wanted to fuck up their friendship, make it weird between them. If he lost Grif, well. He didn’t want to think about it.
So, he never brought up the Vegas Quadrant again.
Not that it did any good.
Grif left him anyway.
And now he’s here.
Asking about the fucking Vegas Quadrant.
“I don’t wanna talk about it,” he snaps.

Right Simmons doesn’t miss a beat.
“I don’t wanna talk about it,” he says.
“That’s not good enough,” Grif says.
Grif turns to look at Left Simmons.
“Fuck. You, Grif,” Left Simmons says.
Grif raises an eyebrow, but then he remembers they can’t see his face.
“Excuse me?” he says.
“Fuck you,” Left Simmons repeats. “You know I don’t want to talk about that. Fuck you. Just—you know what? Just fucking shoot me now.”
“Huh?” Grif lowers his gun a few millimeters.
“You heard me, fatass,” Left Simmons snaps. “Just shoot me. It would be better than talking about—about the Vegas Quadrant.”
“Hey!” Right Simmons chimes in. “He’s not the real Simmons, he’s just copying what I said!”
“Oh, shut up, Gene,” Left Simmons snaps, turning to face Right Simmons again.
“I’m—I’m not Gene, you’re Gene!” Right Simmons sputters.
Left Simmons sighs and looks at Grif again.
“C’mon then, get it over with,” he says. “I’m taking what happened that day to my fucking grave.”
Grif raises his gun.
Fires.

“Oh, thank god,” Gene sighs. “I thought you were gonna shoot me.”
“Only you would die before telling anyone about what happened in the Vegas Quadrant,” Grif says.
“Yeah, well.” Gene doesn’t know what to say, doesn’t want to blow his cover when he just barely made it out of that shit show alive.
“I’d love to sit here and talk about our feelings,” Grif says, “But I think that’ll have to wa—”
There’s an explosion overhead (“Good boy, Freckles!”).
“Come on, Simmons,” Grif beckons. He turns to leave.
“Goodbye, Grif,” Gene says.
“Wh—”
Bang!
Grif is dead before he hits the ground.
“Two down, seven to go.”

Hello! I have some questions about the framework storyline. ^^ I don't really get why the rush to go in there? Their friends have been kidnapped unconscious and put in it, why would they know where they are irl? And waking up with a very weakened body in front of Aida and Creepy Superior is certain death... Couldn't they track the framework code and rescue them first? Also I read a lot of story where Jemma and Daisy goes undercover and all, and it takes days or even weeks to wake up (1)

I mean their bodies won’t last, they have to eat, be hydrated, go to the bathroom because they have not stop by magic and they don’t have IV or a doc to monitor them. Or they show them go in and out of the framework?? otherwise there is a story problem.^^ Also everything is fake in there except for 5 people so they can go full video games style and GTA mod like killing Ward in his sleep, explode hydra base etc. I know it’s a lot sorry. I’ll break these down so I don’t miss anything.

The girls seem to have assumed that someone was awake at some point in their kidnapping. That at the very least they can offer a clue as to where they are or get them to wake up and send a signal so they can come and find them.
And waking up with a very weakened body in front of Aida and Creepy Superior is certain death.
Yes, we don’t want anyone waking up too soon. AIDA has been pretty lenient up to this point but she no longer has Radcliffe to keep her in check. If she sees them waking up as a threat to the Framework she will kill them. But again, the girls don’t know this…yet. They don’t know Radcliffe is dead or what has been done to their friends. Going in they think they are trapped as they are, not that they have been Tahiti’d and given new lives.
Even all of them waking up at once is still too dangerous, they will be weak from being under for so long. Mace is still recovering from his torture. I’m not sure those 5, as capable as they are, and fight their way out.

They have tried and its too elaborate, both Fitz and Daisy did. Radcliffe is bouncing off of too many servers and they can’t get a lock. Fitz was going to use the tech he got from the Superiors base to help find a way to shut it down for good. So for me its a hint we might have to see them take it down from the inside in order to escape. IE in order to break free they have to defeat Hydra. Just as May got out when she defeated AIDA. I won’t be shocked if AIDA is the Dragon here again and is the head of Hydra.

The last time we saw AIDA bring Radcliffe out he said to “Bring him out after 24 hours,” and when she said she did he made it sound like time passes at a different rate in there. So it either feels longer or in the blink of an eye kind of thing. So while IRL they have been in there for a day or two, in there weeks could pass. Allowing us to have 4-5 Episodes pass in there but when we get them out and go for the final fight its just been a few hours/days since they fled the Playground. This also gives them a window do stop what is left of the Daisy fleet.
AIDA is taking care of the business of keeping them alive. She has the IV’s for fluids, feeding tubes for feeding, and there are some ways of taking care of the bathroom stuff they aren’t showing. I have been medically bed bound before and trust me its not fun so they won’t go that deep into it.

Jed said we are going to see them in and out of the Framework. We will see what happened to the base, what of the LMD’s survived (I have a terrible feeling Robo Fitz and at least one of the Robo Daisy’s did and they will start hunting down Inhumans).
And no doubt they will cut to the real world when someone is in danger in the Framework and their vitals start crashing in the real world. Otherwise Jemma wouldn’t have had that “no matter what don’t pull us out line.”
Jemma and Daisy have Jemma’s back door. So one or both can come out from time to time to update Elena and team Red Shirt and make adjustments as needed. Then they can go back in.
We will also get a glimpse at What AIDA is up too, know what the team has to fight once they get out.
Also everything is fake in there except for 5 people so they can go full video games style and GTA mod like killing Ward in his sleep, explode hydra base etc.
The reason they can’t just start killing people is they are now in a world where Hydra is in control. If they just start killing people they become targets themselves. and if their body dies in the Framework their body in the real world will follow.
AIDA will have some sort of safeguard in place. Her Prime Directive is to protect the Framework.
Essentially it won’t be as easy as finding everyone and saying “wake up” and asking where they have been kidnapped too.
They’ve first got to find at get at them. Daisy looks to have easy access to May. Mack I’m betting will be easier to get too but won’t want to leave his daughter. Mace, if Mace is where I think he is then its a mix, they will need the right people to get to him. Coulson…depends on if he’s May’s husband in here or not. As the husband of a high ranking Hydra agent….he’ll be guarded pretty well. Coulson’s other thing could be more of the “You guys are crazy if you think I’m a secret agent”. Fitz, he might be the hardest for them to physically get at, especially if Radcliffe is with him. HIs strong, deep love for Jemma I think means that even if he doesn’t ‘know’ her, he’ll be drawn to her. So its in Radcliffe’s best interest to make sure she doesn’t get too close.
Once they find them they have to un Tahiti them.
Then they have to figure out how to beat the program to wake up/lead Jemma/Daisy to their bodies.
All while making sure the hostages don’t wake up in the middle of a hornets nest with AIDA and the Superior….Back up needs to be close.
PLUS we might have a Robo Daisy all seek and Destroy with the Inhumans, Elena is their “Most Valuable” asset so will likely be their first target.
Be ready to hit the ground running, because I have no idea how they are going to get all this into 7 episodes!
