Your head was pounding, and you could feel your body was weak from the torture. How long had you been passed out? The last thing you remembered was a hot poker penetrating your side. There sitting in front of you was the man who would probably haunt your nightmares for forever.
He wore a sickening smile, “Hi.. I was wondering when you would wake up.” He stood up and held a red straw to your lips.
“Fuck you.” You whispered weakly. There was no telling what was in that drink and you weren’t about to find out.
He frowned, “But you’ve made it 28 hours.. only 8 more and you’ll be,” His fingers went to caress your cheek, but you revolted at his touch, “my soulmate.” He said the last word like he was in a loving haze.
You’d made it through 28 hours with this psychopath? You watched as the man went to the storage closet and pulled out multiple instruments and set them on the table next to you. He clicked a button on a remote and the camera in front of you flashed a red button. You figured it was live streaming now and there was a chance the whole world was watching this freak torture you; including Spencer.
Oh, Spencer. Your heart felt overwhelmed at the thought of him. He’d suffered the loss of Maeve and you worried he would never recover. This was probably bringing those terrible emotions back to the surface.
“I have to see if you can withstand more pain.” His voice was behind you and then a knife cutting the ties off your left arm. If you weren’t weak, you’d try to fight him with one hand, but with your injuries suffered so far and the knife still in your leg, there wasn’t much to do.
“I have to see if you’re my soulmate.” His fingers gripped your upper arm, “This might hurt.”
Your breathing increased as you wondered what was next. Your eyes fixated on the camera in front of you and you tried to focus on the one thing that made you happy. The one thing you loved most in this world. Spencer Reid.
~
It was a trick you’d been taught during your training. You were keeping your mind preoccupied by coming up with various scenes, happy scenes. Spencer’s face crossed your mind and suddenly you were transported to a library. You were sitting across Spencer, books in front of the both of you. You could see him peeking every once and a while to look at you. You knew because you were doing the same thing to him.
“If you keep staring at me, we aren’t ever going to get this finished.”
His fingers continued to dance across the page as he read and he gave a small smile, “I’m not staring at you.”
“Okay.” You shut your book, amused, “Tell me what you just read.”
His fingers stopped and he knew he’d been caught. He finally looked up at you, “I have no idea what I just read.”
You let out a laugh, “Spencer Reid!” You stood, “We have to finish this paper for Dr. Johnson’s class!” Grabbing the two books on the table, you headed toward a row of library books, “These don’t have what I need.”
In this imaginary world you and Spencer were young, college students. It was a normal life with no danger. No BAU. No cases. Just you and Spencer living a normal life.
“I’m sorry!” He chuckles, standing to follow you. He stops behind you as you put the two books back on the shelves, “how am I supposed to concentrate when I’m in front of the most beautiful girl in this universe?”
You turned around and faced him, “Spencer Reid.”
“y/n y/l/n.” He copied your tone, brushing a piece of hair behind your ear, “I love you.” Those three words. You wanted to hear it again.
“Say it again.” Your fingers wrapped around his wrist as he cupped your cheek.
His other hand cupped your other cheek and subconsciously caressed your cheek with his thumb, “I love you.”
~
You let out a scream as the man pulled on your arm, dislocating your shoulder from it’s socket. No no.. take me back. Take me back to standing there with Spencer in that library where you heard the words you’d wished he’d confess.
How much more of this could you take? How much more could anyone take? This was an insane amount of pain and all you wanted to do was sleep. You wanted to give up.
You sobbed, finally breaking, “Please stop.. just please.”
“I can’t.” He sighs, “36 hours.” He taps the watch on his wrist.
You were fading, or at least you wanted to fade away. You’d been strong during all this because you knew you’d get to see Spencer again. He’d been the one to keep you going during this, but right now you don’t know how much more you could take. You wanted to make it through this just to be able to tell him how you felt. Your thoughts slowed and the darkness consumed you.
~
As soon as the live stream was posted, Penelope began working her magic. However, it was still proven to be a challenge on pinpointing the location.
He had to watch as the man pulled your arm out of it’s socket and listen to your screams of agony. He’d kill him. He knew if he’d ever see this man he’d kill him with his own bare hands for harming you in this way, such a public way.
“Please.. please hang on just a bit longer.” He pleaded to the screen.
More disappointment as the live stream cut off when your eyes went closed. You’d passed out from the overwhelming amount of pain and exhaustion.
~
8 hours later there was another livestream, but this time there wasn’t anyone seated in the chair. You were gone and his mind went to worst. You’d lost the battle.
“I’ve got it! I’ve got the location!” Penelope yelled through the comms, the location immediately sent to everyone’s phone.
There wasn’t time to think as everyone rushed out the door and toward the known location. However, when they arrived, it was Hotch and JJ who went in first. As Spencer followed, Hotch immediately came back out stopping him at the door.
“You don’t need to go in there.”
Spencer was confused, “What? Why not?” He tried to push passed Hotch again and the look on JJ’s face told him everything he needed to know. “Let me see!”
Hotch lost the grip on the determination of Spencer and he passed through the door way. Spencer skitted to a stop at the sight before him. No no no.
His knees his the floor. This wasn’t happening again, please no. He silently begged. “No! No no!” He couldn’t help the sobs that overcame his body.
There in the middle of the room laying on a blanket where the chair had been was your headless body in a pool of blood.

Moral of the Story (Prologue)
Series Summary: From childhood friends, to highschool sweethearts, the two naive, young, and lovestruck teens decided the best way to keep a strong relationship during college would be to marry right out of highschool. No one batted an eye at the idea as everyone knew they were soulmates. However, college is a big step in a person’s life. You learn new things about yourself, you make new friends, find new hobbies… And maybe being newly weds and going to different colleges across the states wasn’t the best plan… After a falling out, and a tragic heartbreaking divorce, the two now hold grudges for how the other handled the whole thing in the past. Neither not really knowing both sides of the story. 10 years later, and they both get a call from the lawyers office that settled their divorce. Somehow the papers never went through and the divorce was never completed. So now, the exes, or should we say husband and wife, have to meet back up after all these years to settle their failed marriage once and for all. (This summary will be shorter in other chapters. I just needed to get the full concept out there;)
A/N (repeat): So the other day while I was doing my hair (quite the process), I was playing music and the song Moral of the Story by Ashe came on. Mind you, I’ve heard this song hundreds of times, but for some reason, this time I got a major story idea! Listening to the lyrics brought me to this new series. Of course, the lengthy summary above will give you an idea of what came to my brain, but I recommend you listen to the song still because it plays a big part in my thought process:) (Plus it’s a good song;) Enjoy and please do not hesitate to share your thoughts and comments with me! I love each and every single one<3
(I will release the first chapter at the beginning of next week! That way I can give myself some time to write more chapters before sharing it!)
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Y/N (Modern AU)
Word Count: 1200+
Prologue:
"Melody, have the papers for the Bee's Knees company come in yet?"
"Uh, no. But I can call them again and see if they faxed it or sent over a physical copy though," Melody answered from her desk, already typing away to find the company.
"Perfect. We have a meeting with a recycling plant next week and I want to get everything set before we go in with them," Y/N nodded, coming out from her office with a file in her hands. She turned to her assistant at the front desk who was about 20 emails deep and already finding the issue. "Hey, you're not coming in tomorrow, right?"
"Um, no, no. I am. I rescheduled that date," she answered bashfully as if she had been caught in the act of something.
"Melody..." Y/N drug out, hand on her hip.
"What? I- He understood. He said he was fine moving it to Saturday," the young woman shrugged, never looking back at her boss that was clearly sending her a motherly stare.
"You're already over your 40 hours this week, and you've rescheduled with him, what? 3 times now?" Y/N moved to the front of the desk so the young brunette had to make eye contact with her.
"Yes," she answered hesitantly.
"Is it just nerves or something else?" Y/N smirked.
"I'm not nervous... It's just been a while since I've had time for a date."
"Two things about what you just said in the past minute. One, clearly this guy likes you because he's rescheduled with you this many times and hasn't called it off yet. So if you're nervous about it not going well on his end, I think you're safe," Y/N pointed a finger at her.
"But-," Melody started.
"Second," Y/N cut off with a raised eyebrow. "I'm giving you time to go on a date and you're still not taking it. Work is no longer an excuse."
Melody stopped avoiding eye contact and looked up at the Y/H/C hair woman leaning on her reception desk.
"You've been talking with my mom again, haven't you?" she sighed.
"I promised I'd take care of you. So yes, I have. And though her reasoning for you dating is because she wants grandbabies, I just want you to have fun and live your life. You're 22. Don't waste your young years being scared."
"Ugh, fine. I'll text him now and see if he's still available for tonight," she groaned.
"Perfect!" Y/N grinned in victory as she started to walk back to her office. "I expect the details in the morning," she winked before she walked in.
"Oh, Y/N!" Melody stopped her. "A message came for you while you were in that last meeting."
"Who from?" Y/N quirked an eyebrow, moving back to the desk.
"Uh, I don't really know. Didn't sound familiar, but here's the name and number they said to call back from," she answered, handing her a note.
Y/N took the small paper and looked it over. Her face dropped and her eyes widened.
"You ok? Is it someone you know?" the young assistant asked, noticing what looked like horror on her face.
"Um, yeah. Yeah, an old acquaintance of mine," Y/N tried to quickly brush off. "Um, I'm going to take this. Can you hold any calls and if anyone comes to talk, tell them to just email me?"
"Oh, ok. Yeah, I'll take care of it," Melody nodded.
"Thank you."
Rushing back to her office and quickly shutting her door, she raced to her phone. She read the business name again, not sure if she was dreaming or if it was a hallucination.
Nope. Hammer Attorney was written in Melody's perfect penmanship on the paper with a number that held an area code from New York. A place she never thought she would hear from again and from a town she hadn't visited in almost 10 years._________________
"Buck, did you tell Fury about getting those new water therapy machines?" Steve shouted from his room.
"We're at home, Steve. Why are we talking about work?" Bucky groaned as he slouched on the couch. A beer in hand and a documentary with I Survived stories playing in front of him.
Steve came in from around the corner looking down at his phone in hand before moving his eye line to his roommate.
"Because I just got a call from the night crew saying that the last one that was working, finally went out tonight while they were running it for some test," Steve raised an eyebrow.
"Ugh, you would think that a facility run by a billionaire who literally makes his money on high-tech machines, wouldn't have to ask for those kinds of things," Bucky groaned, grabbing his own phone and going through emails. "Let me check to see if the email went through. He wasn't in office when I went to tell him."
As he was sorting through the hundreds of emails sent back and forth just this week alone, he found the reply message.
"Yeah, management confirmed it. They should be in by Saturday it looks like. Guess Stark was still working out the kinks to a new one and was waiting to send one our way until the last one died to get more time on his newest model."
Steve nodded before walking to the kitchen and typing Bucky's response to the other crew members.
"The man is always finding new ways to upgrade them before he can even send them to us."
Just as Bucky was about to throw his phone to the side again though, it started ringing. Looking at the caller ID, he didn't recognize the unknown number. It was from in-state but in his hometown area of Brooklyn. He pinched his eyebrows together confused at the call, but answered it anyway, thinking it must be someone from home.
"Hello?"
"Hello. Is this Mr. Barnes?" The other voice answered.
"Yes, this is him. Who's this?" he asked, sitting up a little and putting the beer on the end table.
"My name is Matthew Murdock. I work at Nelson and Murdock Law firm," he went on. Bucky shook his head not knowing what that was supposed to mean. "Well, you may actually know us previously as Hammer Attorney. We recently just took over their business after some fraud issues."
Bucky's heart stopped. He knew what that name meant.
"I hate to inform you, but we were going through some of their old files. Ones we were informed could be incomplete or done completely incorrectly due to little care in the actual cases, but more so in taking the money."
"Incomplete cases?" Bucky said softly. His brain was still trying to wrap around the conversation.
"Yes, unfortunately, it looks like a lot of cases having to deal with divorces that the past owners handled, were done strictly in order to launder money. They weren't actually certified, nor trained in handling divorce settlements."
Bucky froze. Eyes wide. Mouth agape.
He stuttered out a response when the man on the other line didn't continue.
"A-And talking about incomplete divorce settlements, you called because..." Bucky knew. He needed to hear it out loud because if he didn't, it wasn't true. It couldn't be.
"I'm so sorry Mr. Barnes, but it looks as though you and your wife, Y/N Y/L/N or sorry, Y/N Barnes, are actually not divorced."
(I will release the first chapter at the beginning of next week! That way I can give myself some time to write more chapters before sharing it!)

Wedding Bells
Word Count: 1600
Pairings: Lucifer Morningstar x Reader
Warnings: the tiniest, smallest sprinkle of angst, but mostly just sickening fluff lol
A/N: This is a kind of older story from Wattpad, but I haven't had time to write a new one yet, because of cramming for exams, but don't fret my lovelies, I'll be getting back to writing requests very soon.
Summary: It was the day you'd been planning for months, the day that would change everything. It was like a dream, but the butterflies in your stomach, the way your leg bounced with unending anxiety and excitement reminded you that it was all real. That this day would be perfect, more perfect than you had ever hoped.
...............................................................................
Your day had started early, earlier than you had planned, but you woke long before your alarm had begun, long before the sunlight had graced the sky. You were quiet as you slipped out of bed, your fingers softly brushing the hair from your fiancé's face, a small smile pulling at your lips. He shifted a little, but remained soundly asleep. Your feet softly padded across the smooth cold floor as you headed towards the living room.
The sight of a beautiful white gown hanging from the closet door caught your attention and you paused. You reached a hand out, softly tracing the lace and pearls that decorated the silk material. Today was the day, the day everything changed.
The day you married the devil.
"I do hope you're not getting cold feet darling, I'd be terribly embarrassed to be left at the altar."
The sound of your future husband's voice pulled you from your trance and you turned to face him, a small smile graving your lips.
"You're not supposed to be awake yet." You chided him softly.
He chuckled a bit, slipping out of bed to stand behind you. You leaned into his touch when he embraced you from behind, resting his chin on top of your head.
"I never did sleep well without you by my side." He murmured.
You placed your hands over where his wrapped around your waist. For a silent moment the two of you stood there, staring at the dress before you. The shaky breath Lucifer took in broke the silence and his words made your heart skip a beat.
"This is it isn't it? The day you become mine forever. My Queen. My darling wife."
Your voice shook just a little as you spoke, the fluttering of the butterflies in your stomach spread goosebumps across your skin.
"Yeah, it is..."
Lucifer kissed your cheek as he released you from his hold.
"Mustn't dawdle darling, we've got a very busy day ahead of us."
You watched him disappear into the closet, and you looked back at your dress, fingers ghosting over the material one last time.
"Right... so much to do..."
You straightened your back, taking a small breath to steady yourself. With a small nod to yourself you walked out of the room, ready for whatever this day had in store for you.
~
Your morning seemed to drag on, and the longer it did the more your nerves grew, the more you wrung your hands, the more you resisted the urge to bite your nails that Lucifer had spent a fortune on.
Despite you insisting it wasn't necessary, but he'd insisted.
'Anything for my bride to be.'
You smiled a little at the memory and bit your lip a little, careful not to smudge the makeup Linda had spent a careful amount of time doing for you. A hand rested on knee and you turned your head to look at Chloe.
"Are you okay? You're bouncing your leg a lot."
You gave her a smile, one riddled with unspoken anxiety, underlined with excitement. She smiled back, fixing a stray curl in your hair Ella and Maze had spent so long on.
"I'm just nervous."
"That's normal, I remember when I was marrying Dan, I was a bundle of nerves and stress, you're handling it a lot better than I am." Chloe laughed.
Her laugh put you more at ease, and you found yourself laughing a long with her.
"I tend to internalize things." You shrugged.
Ella chimed in as well, and you were thankful for your four bridesmaids distraction.
The ceremony drew nearer and people began to arrive at Lux; you insisted the wedding be there, it was first place Lucifer had ever truly called home and he was so happy when you told him you wanted to be married there.
But now you didn't want to leave the safety of the penthouse. You wanted nothing more than to walk down that aisle, marry the man you knew would give you the world if he could. However, the anxiety of it all was beginning to catch up to you and you found yourself unable to leave the bathroom you'd locked yourself in. Try as they might your bridesmaids could do nothing to convince you out.
Linda volunteered to be the one to tell the groom of your unfortunate situation and Lucifer didn't look the least bit concerned. He simply looked out of the crowd of people, people you barely knew but had invited out of polite obligation. Your own family had refused to come, they'd never cared much for the devil.
"I've just got the most splendid idea, you grab Daniel and Amenadiel, and meet me upstairs." Lucifer smiled cryptically.
Linda watched him walk away, standing there confused for a moment.
"Okay?"
She went off to find the groomsmen. Dan had only been asked to be one because Lucifer knew you two were on good terms and friends, much to his disdain. Linda did as he asked, gathering everyone up, ushering them to the elevator as discreetly as she could. The crowd didn't seem to notice anything amiss.
When they stepped from the elevator they were surprised to see Lucifer and Maze moving furniture while Chloe and Ella decorated the penthouse with extra decorations left over.
"What are you doing?" Dan was the first to ask.
"Why we're having a wedding Daniel! Don't just stand there, lend a hand!"
Dan shrugged before moving to help Amenadiel place the rug.
"Doctor be a dear and fetch my bride would you?" Lucifer hummed a little.
Linda stood there a moment, still trying to process everything.
"What about all the guests downstairs?"
"They've got the reception to enjoy, they'll be just fine, although this isn't really about them now it is?"
That was good enough for her and she walked to the bathroom, knocking lightly.
"Y/N, can you come out for a minute."
It was silent for a moment before there was a soft click of the lock. The door opened and Linda smiled.
"Come on, we have a surprise for you."
You could hardly believe your eyes, the penthouse although nothing extraordinary was decorated beautifully, and filled with the only people you truly cared where there. A small laugh escaped and you blinked back tears. Dan offered you his arm, as Linda took her place with the other bridesmaids. Dan led you closer to where Lucifer stood, more handsome than ever in his tux, Amenadiel standing ready to marry the two of you.
Lucifer watched you draw closer, and although he'd seen you in your dress before the sight of you now made his heart stop and he stood up straighter, his eyes refusing to look away from you for even a second, wanting to etch this moment into his memory forever. Amenadiel placed his hand on Lucifer's shoulder, smiling at his brother.
"Luci, you're crying."
Lucifer cleared his throat, fixing his sleeves. He sputtered a moment, like he was trying to deny it but his expression softened and he found he didn't much care for the tears blurring his vision.
"Well of course I am brother! Just look at her... have you ever seen anyone more beautiful..."
Amenadiel smiled folding his hands in front of him in as Lucifer took your hands in his. Dan took his place beside Lucifer and the devil smiled at you.
"I'm sorry about putting you through all this trouble." You spoke softly.
He squeezed your hands a bit, his smile reassuringly.
"Darling it hardly matters where I marry you, just that I have you forever."
You smiled and Amenadiel cleared his throat.
"Can I continue?"
Lucifer huffed, waving his brother off dismissively.
"Yes of course, let's hurry this along, I'm eager to begin my honeymoon."
You and the others laughed joyfully relieving the anxiety you'd been feeling. This was Lucifer, your best friend, the man or rather devil, you wanted to spend the rest of your life with. You had no reason to worry, and with that thought in mind, a warm content feeling settled over you.
As Amenadiel went through the ceremony Lucifer held your hands a little tighter, his eyes never leaving yours.
When Amenadiel finally announced you as husband and wife Lucifer had almost impatiently pulled you into that fateful kiss. Your small group of friends cheered and you had smiled so wide as Lucifer dipped you.
The moment hadn't been what either of you had originally planned, but it had been perfect nonetheless. And you knew you wouldn't change a thing.
~
The other guests had been understanding and were more than happy to simply enjoy the reception with the new Mr. and Mrs. Morningstar. So you drank, and you laughed and you danced, and when you danced that slow dance with your husband you couldn't help the tears that escaped, prompting your new husband's worry.
"I'm crying because I'm happy Lucifer." You assured him.
He swayed with you in his arms, and you cupped his face in your hands.
"I married the man I love, surrounded only by the people who mean the most to me. Today was perfect and I wouldn't change a thing."
Lucifer smiled, giving you a soft kiss, before you rested your head on his shoulder as the two of you swayed to the soft melody of the song playing.
"And I will love you forever, my beautiful wife."
You smiled as he held you tighter, joyful tears filling both of your eyes, and he pressed a kiss to the top of your head.
You'd done it.
You said your vows.
You said I do.
And you had kissed that devil with everything you had, and you'd never been happier, knowing you'd spend the rest of time with the man who loved you the most by your side.

Mizeloph's Tale Chapter 2
Pairing - Right now the pairing is General Kirigan x OC Sun Summoner, but that will eventually change to Kaz Brekker x OC Sun Summoner
Summary - Ketterdam is a city of thieves and these three are no strangers as they find themselves the first to a huge money job. Past are uncovered and people who where thought to be gone to the other might yet still be alive.
Word Count - 1574
-
Ketterdam
Kaz Brekker had changed, he wasn’t the same as he was before Jordies death, when he got back from the sea of death everything was different. He learned very quickly that being alone was not how someone thrived in Ketterdam, so he joined the Dregs. His past was something that Kaz kept close to his chest, no one knew that there was one person he thought of but always tried not to, a girl with white hair. However, sometimes that one person was overshadowed by his greed to one up Pekka Rollins, the man that had ruined his life. Which made stealing the Heartrender from underneath Pekkas grasp very satisfying. With Inej and Jesper they walked up to the gates that belonged to Dressen, the man who was offering the shining million kruge job.
A man approached the gate to see who the visitors were “Who are you?” he asked
“We’re here to see Dreesen” Kaz answered
He looked at the group confused “you’re not with Pekka’s crew”
“And you’re no longer in Pekka’s pocket if you don’t owe him” Kaz threw a bag of coins in between the bars of the gate, the man caught the bag and looked at it.
The gates then opened and they were allowed in “Hey! One of these has a hole in it!”
“Inside, now” Kaz said ushering the group into the building
They were brought into an office where Dressen was sitting. Kaz knew that they would have the upper hand, being first to have what Dressen wanted was key to securing the job. They needed this, it would be a big deal for the Crows to be able to get this kind of money. Dreesen looked them all over and already had an idea about the people who were standing in front of him.
“Criminals, it only takes one look” he eyes them a bit more before returning to the papers on his desk “I am not meeting with anyone until midnight so you are just wasting your time”
“We have the Heartrender that you requested” Kaz said
Dressen sighed and took a moment to think “Well.. alright, she stays and the rest of you can wait here” he said getting up from his chair and walking around his desk
The heartrender went to walk forward but Kaz stopped her with his cane “No, she stays and we have an exclusive on the job”
“Now Mr. Brekker. No businessman worth his salt hires his first applicants”
Kaz shrugged his shoulders “of course, I understand. It’s a big decision to make, just like the decision to report you to the guild for kidnapping and harboring a prisoner chain of title” he smirked a little, showing off his confidence, Kaz was the one with the upper hand in their little exchange
Dreesen glared at Kaz “you wouldn’t dare”
“No businessman worth his salt bargains for what he can take” Kaz answered
The Heartrender raised her hand “I have to be back in an hour”
“Alright, come on”
Dressen brought them down to where he was keeping the hostage, he walked up to him and turned to face the crew. Kaz went from looking around the room then back to where Dressen was standing.
“This is Alexi Stepanov” he pulled the bag off of his head to reveal his face “two weeks ago Alexei here crossed the Fold on foot, he was alone”
Inej was shocked “how?” she saw that the man was mouthing the word ‘water’ and she got him a glass for him to drink
“They’re keeping it quiet, but allegedly he was one of a few witnesses to an event..”
“What kind of event?” Kaz asked
“I know an expedition was swarmed by Volcra, it should have been a total loss, but something happened.. Right now the running theory over here is that it was a new device, one only for the worst case scenarios, but something is different about what was seen. It lit up the Fold like a forest fire. However, whatever destroyed the swarming Volcra was not a device with fire, because it would have killed everyone on that skiff. It had to have been some sort of new invention no one has seen before. This man is the answer, he hasn’t been able to speak, some sort of trauma lapse” Dreesen explained
The Heartrender approached Alexei and knelt down then started to slow down his heart beat to calm him down “you are safe now, speak and I will just listen” she smiled gently at him “tell me what happened in the Fold, what saved you?”
Alexei took in a deep breath, feeling his heart coming down to a steady pace “If I tell you, will you set me free?”
Dreesen nodded “you are in Ketterdam now, you can go anywhere in the world from here, just imagine”
“Her name is.. Anna Mizeloph, she is the Sun Summoner” Alexei said, not realizing the gates he had just opened
Kaz’s world froze, the same name of the girl with white hair he thought of every day was at the center of a myth, the Sun Summoner. So many questions were running through his mind about her and what had led her to that skiff where she had somehow demonstrated that she was the mythical Sun Summoner. He couldn’t piece together what could have happened to get her away from Ketterdam to the other side of the Fold. Kaz did understand that they had been separated as children and hoped that one day they would find each other. After he had fought tooth and nail to survive from the killer ocean in order to get back to her, she had just up and disappeared. He was always confused about how a girl with white hair would be difficult to find, but it was like she had never existed. As he was dealing with his trauma Kaz was working day and night to find Anna, but he could never find a lead that could get him something. For a while Kaz held onto those memories with Anna, they were the only way he could get through his trauma. However, those memories could not always protect Kaz forever, he had to eventually become a new person, someone who could thrive in Ketterdam, not just survive. Kaz Brekker, the Bastard of the Barrel had been shaped by his hardships in Ketterdam and he clawed his way to where he was now. Today, one thing that had always held him back was Anna Mizeloph even if he didn’t know it, if they ever found each other he questioned what she would think of him and how he had changed. In the end Anna Mizeloph was the last piece of Kaz Rietveld and he tried to let go, but Kaz never could.
Jesper and Inej knew they would want to talk with Kaz later about how he had reacted to Anna Mizelophs name. They had never seen him react so quickly just to hide it, there was something more to this and they were going to find out.
Dreesen smiled and checked the manifest “perfect” Alexei smiled “you will set me free now?” he was ready to see the world and erase the horrors of the Fold from his mind
“Thank you, of course” Dreesen then pulled out a gun and shot Alexei in the head, his body dropping to the floor, the heartrender screamed, shocked by what had just happened.
“We are now the only people west of the Fold who know this information, my ship sails for West Ravka at dawn. If you can prove that you have a way through the Fold and back, I will put you on that ship with an advance. If you don’t, I might consider giving the job to Pekaa Rollins”
“Give me a day” Kaz bargained
“You have until sunrise, then your ship will have sailed, Mr Brekker. The prize is one million kruge. Now, bring me Anna Mizeloph” Dreesens men showed them out
When they were finally back to the three of them Inej decided she would step up and ask first about Kaz's reaction “when that man said Anna Mizeloph, the look on your face.. I have never seen you react like that, you knew her didn’t you?”
Kaz looked at Inej wondering if he should indulge her question “I knew one girl named Anna Mizeloph, but she has been gone for a very long time...”
Jesper gave Kaz a look “I mean, how rare is the last name Mizeloph?”
“She is the only one I have ever known to have that last name, so it might be her.. If it is, then we have an advantage over the competition, especially if we are going to be competing with Pekka Rollins” Kaz knew that this would be the chance for his past to finally be useful
“You would really use your past with Anna Mizeloph to put her into a false sense of security?” Inej asked slightly shocked, she knew that Kaz could be a bit harsh especially when it came to the possibility of a lot of money and beating Pekka Rollins, but she did not think he would go this far to emotionally manipulate Anna if he needed to
“For a million kruge, yes” Kaz said and walked off thinking about how we would find them a way through the Fold, there and back.

Don’t miss the Yule Ball.
Sirius finally opens up to James Potter, and he realizes a lot of things. He has decided he will go the yule ball, but the question is: with whom?

Chapter 3
Sirius kept chewing his first bite for a little longer than he was supposed to, because Remus had left the Great Hall looking apprehensive, and gruesome. He sighed through his breakfast, waiting for the day to get by. He was pushing down all the unnecessary thoughts and emotions because he didn’t want to expect anything from anyone, especially how the last night had turned out.
He had woken up with a better feeling—if he had to be honest with himself—because Remus had finally not just smiled at him but hugged him with genuine earnest and he had held him until Sirius was done crying. The memory was painfully sweet in his head. Nevertheless, he was slightly hopeful than yesterday. Remus had always tried to bring the best out of him. The tug of war in his brain about his friendship and relationship with Remus was easing out in his mind, while also clenching his heart. He took another bite of his porridge, and thought that he should stop worrying about normalcy. He realized that wanting normal with this desperation was going to make him fall in the pits of agitation. He was not able to deal with another heartache. For once, he wanted to give his heart a break.
He gulped down his bite, and he decided he was going to the same with his desires and dreams. He was going to be grateful of the things he had in life; Good friends, miles away from his abusive parents, good education, and especially, his magic. He was himself because he knew how to kindle fire by the swipe of his fingers, he could wave his wand and conjure blue stardust while walking alone in the forest, and he could conjure a patronus to keep the sadness away for a while.
His thinking cycle came to a halt when James and Peter rushed to the hall, and haphazardly began swallowing their breakfast. Sirius was so captured seeing them not uttering a word and gulping down their teas and milk in one breath.
“Merlin, Pads—could have told us—“ James was managing to breathe while munching his toasts, debauching all the manners and etiquettes of eating by spraying the breadcrumbs everywhere on the table.
“Wow, Prongs, you really know how to eat.” Sirius laughed amusingly. Both of the Marauders glared at him. And once they were done, James said that they were already five minutes late for Transfiguration. This time Sirius didn’t think of manners at all, and stumbled out his seat as the three of them raced to the classroom. The air whooshed through them as they pushed through the crowd of students and teachers who shouted things like ‘Hey! Watch it!’ and ‘5 points from Gryffindor!’
The air smelled of nostalgia as Sirius felt the adrenaline in his blood and giddiness in his stomach. The three of them were running like they used to when Filch would catch them and they would hide in the broom cupboards for hours until the course were clear, and then they would laugh like maniacs. It felt all the same to Sirius when they reached the classroom, and he was getting breathless in the most satisfying way. The doors opened, stealing everyone’s attention. Mcgonacall had her usual glare, and Sirius spotted Remus sitting with Lily, his face looked scarlet which made Sirius feel the same heating flush beneath his cheeks and neck.
“Mr Potter, Mr Black and Mr Pettigrew, why is it always you three to be late in my class?” There was something different about Mcgonacall as her gaze is fixed at Sirius. He could swore that there was a hint of smile playing on her lips. She ordered them to take seats, and Peter sat with Mary while James with Sirius. The both of them had to keep hands on their mouths to suppress the bubbling laughter. James gave him a playful nudge, his eyes were whispering something meaningful, and Sirius felt a gush of affection for him.
The day went by with Double Transfiguration with the Slytherins, Charms with Ravenclaws, and Double History of Magic with the Hufflepuffs. James and Sirius were walking to the common room to put their books and notes and then return to the dinner with the rest of Marauders.
“So, Padfoot…” James smirked at him, “I have an unbelievable news to share with you.”
“Have you finally learn not to make a fool of yourself?” Sirius got a harsh fling of James’ arm around his shoulder that he staggered in his pace, almost collapsing on the floor but James held him firmly.
“Hey, hey, hey,” James’ voice was soaked with concern, “You okay? I’m sorry I didn’t know I was that harsh.”
“No, it was not harsh.” Sirius managed to say but the other didn’t seem convinced. He was getting some serious brain-fogs from the past few days, and he hadn’t told anyone yet, not even Madam Pomfrey.
“Then what was that, Sirius? What is going on? Are you not well?” Those were so many questions for Sirius to answer. He didn’t want to disrupt his day which was finally going better for the first time in forever. However with James’ big hazel eyes were staring at him like that as if they were saying hundreds of things to him he felt the urge to tell him everything—by everything meant everything.
And then they didn’t return for dinner, they were in their dorm alone with no interruption. Sirius told him how frequently he had been experiencing panic attacks, and how much tired he felt, like always, how he felt like his bones were feeble, and his muscles were aching, how he was also experiencing constant brain-fogs. And then, he also told him how he was dealing with emotional pain the most, how constantly he was thinking and trying to commit act of self-harm, and how much he was thinking how he had let the Marauders down. James listened him very carefully with full attention, nodded in the right places and shushed him when Sirius talked about how much he missed Remus. He was struggling to get louder because his voice was not cooperating with him. He was gushing out all of the emotions which were buried in the depths of him. He cried at some parts but he was calm because James’ hand was there squeezing his arm, and rubbing his back. When they were done, they fell into comfortable silence, and Sirius felt as light as a feather.
“So what was the good news?” Sirius said to break the silence.
“Uh…” James smiled weakly at him, “I asked Evans to go with to the ball as my date and she said yes.”
Sirius smiled at him genuinely, “I’m happy for you, Prongs.” He hit him with a playful punch but James didn’t respond too much. He looked sad, and it was awkward. Sirius never wanted that. They fell into another round of silence before he felt two arms wrapped from his behind, tugging there. Sirius put his hands on James’, sitting under the cloud of melancholy.
“I’m sorry, Padfoot. You were keeping a lot inside of you. I don’t like when you do that.” Sirius smiled warmly at his mildly aggressive voice, “I am your brother, and you are supposed to tell me that. And all of that. Everything, buddy. I love you, you know that right?”
“There is no reason to be a sap, Potter.” Sirius elbowed him, “But yeah, and I love you, too. Always have and always will.”
“Look, who’s a bigger sap now.”
“Okay, Evans said yes—“ Sirius pulled away to face him, but he was cut off by James in mid-sentence.
“For the ball. I don’t want to get my hopes up.”
“Who are you and what have you done with my best friend?”
James didn’t smile. There was still something despondent about him. After a brief silence, he said, “Pads, this may sound a little weird but hear me out…” Sirius nodded, “You should ask Moony for tomorrow.”
“Oh no, no, no, no,”
“Why!?” James whined.
“’Why’? What do you mean ‘why’? Out of all people, you should not be the one to say that.”
“No, Padfoot, I should be the person to say that! You told me how he encouraged to go to the ball. I mean, why would he? Either he is trying to be your mom and asking you to have fun or he is giving signals for you to ask him to be your date for the ball!”
“Considering Remus, he was definitely being a mother-hen.”
“Think about it, Moony doesn’t easily like someone. He never dated anyone except you because you are the one he fell in love with, you tosser!
That’s when the door swung open, revealing Remus and Peter which confused looks. Sirius felt like his heart was in his throat.
“Thought we’d find you guys here.” Peter said, throwing his satchel on his bed, “Why did you miss dinner?”
“Oh, we completely lost track of time.” Sirius said successfully because the room had started to feel small with Remus’ presence, “We should go to the kitchen, Prongs.” He was hoping he could just skip the anxiety and continue his chance of talking out with James more. He was talking after ages, and it felt lighter and easy. Suddenly, he was very grateful for having James Potter in his life.
“Oh, you know what, you stay here. Wormy and I will bring food for you.” James piped up with his stupid grin, and Sirius began to have second thoughts on being grateful of James.
“What!?” Peter retorted, “But I just came back!”
“And you could come back again, my best friend Wormy!” Sirius scowled at James who in returned gave him a thumbs-up, gesturing to talk to Remus who was putting down his books in on his nightstand. Soon, the whiny Peter and an overly-smart James were out of the dorm, leaving him and Remus alone.
Sirius was fidgeting with his fingers anxiously, gazing at Remus’ back.
“I can feel you staring at me.” Sirius thought he was completely frozen. Remus turned to face him, smiling small at him.
“Yeah…” Sirius let out a breathless chuckle, “I was just…”
Awkward silence.
“Remus, I wanted to ask you something and if you don’t think the same way, I would completely understand.” His heart was hammering in his chest. Remus nodded at him. He took a deep breath and finally the words were out, “Will you go to the ball with me as my date?”
Extremely awkward silence. Remus was opening and closing his mouth to say something but no words were audible enough as an answer to Sirius. That’s because he doesn’t have any answer, Sirius thought to himself.
“Sirius…” Remus finally said, “I can’t.”
It wasn’t like Sirius wasn’t expecting this, but it still hurt him like a dagger shot right into his heart.
“I mean…” Remus continued, scratching the back on his head or pulling his sleeve, “it’s not like I don’t want to, because I do…A lot, actually…”
His voice was turning croaky, and Sirius was able to see that it was not easy for Remus either.
“But, I already have a date.” This time it hurt more than earlier. Sirius wanted to laugh, and he did. Remus froze, looking dumbfounded. It was a strange thing that hurting not always accompany the act of shedding tears. Sirius was actually laughing at himself that he was a fool to believe, like actually believe.
“Of course, of course,” Sirius wiped the tears in the corner of his eyes, “Of course, you have a date. How can you not?” He was shaking his head, still unable to control his laugh. It was a very wrong judgment.

Hello Again Part Five
A/n: I am so sorry this took forever for me to post, I don't always feel amazing and its been hitting a little too hard recently But here I am again! Its good to be writing for Toshinori too, I've missed writing for him 👉👈 I hope yall enjoy and commissions are still open! Thank you all so much for being patient with me! <3
Summary: It hurt, remembering. And unfortunately danger was coming.
Ashido looked incredibly excited seeing the big three. You could see the dots connecting in their heads about them. Even Yaoyorozu said what you knew they were all thinking 'Still in school, but practically pros already. They're the students they should be chasing after.'
From what you'd heard about these students, they were that good. You could see them saving people already. You'd also heard about their previous sports festivals. Ahem, Togatas approach to things because of his quirk certainly made things interesting to watch. (I.e. when they showed you the footage you looked away mildly embarrassed at how Togata had to strip down for his quirk). But getting the title of "The Big Three" takes hard work, and you knew that because of it these students worked especially hard to achieve that.
"Get to it. Introduce yourselves briefly." Aizawa said, beginning to point at one of the students. "Let's start with Amajiki."
The boy gave an intense look to the class, one that you could tell scared them as they all sat a little straighter in their seats. He started shaking and quietly talked to the others. "Its no good. You two go. I just can't. Even if I try to imagine them as potatoes, I can see their human bodies. I know that they're still people. No words are coming out. My minds blank and my mouth is dry." You could tell the other students were confused as he shook. "I can't say anything. I wanna… go home." He finished turning to face the wall. You could definitely understand that part. You were mentally begging to check out yourself. The lack of sleep along with the overall stress still affecting you was a lot. But you were going to hold out. You'd sleep later. You were barely paying attention to the students talking, well mostly Hado asking a ton of questions to all the students. It was rather cute of her, she sounded like she should in your opinion. Young, without the major stress involved with being a hero since she's still a student she only gets the glimpses, and nothing has been severe enough recently. Only All Mights last battle, and well you tried not thinking about that tidbit. You tried not thinking about All Might at all. You only checked back in as Togata told the class that they had to fight him, all at once. You all made your way to the gym, watching him stretch and prepare. Although you didn't know much about the third years, you could tell the students weren't taking it seriously. They have fought pros, and they've fought legitimate villains. But right now that didn't matter. They needed to see the ones that are close enough to the level of pros. The ones they have to strive to be. At least Midoryia was taking it seriously. You knew he felt like he was missing a lot. And he wanted to strive to be better (like someone else you knew), you pushed the thought away, just as he rushed Togata. You blinked slowly at the sight. Was that… his clothing just falling off? Hmm, no wonder he stripped before doing anything during the sports festival. Poor Jiro, and well all the students. You remembered how red your face was seeing All- you had to push that thought away. That was slightly embarrassing for both of you, and well… again you didn't want to think about him right now. You felt your heart throb. You missed him. You didn't pay much attention to the actual fighting. It hurt. It hurt thinking about him. You bit your lip. It wouldn't do well to break down in front of everyone. You were strong, so you grit your teeth and pushed the feelings down. You could see Togata beating the crop out of all the students. Few were still standing. Now they were taking it more seriously. This kid put in hard work to be able to get everything down to a pat. Midoriya did well though, predicting exactly where Togata would be. But it wasn't enough, as all of them ended up defeated. Togata would have to work on that predictable part of his attacks. Villains would kill for someone that predictable, and although it took Midoryia actually analyzing the situation, a smart villain would do the same eventually. Or they would listen to someone who could do what Midoriya does. And it could get him killed. He was fast, but an unfortunate reality was that eventually, he wouldn't be fast enough. Someone would be faster, and it won't end well. Permeation. It was actually a good quirk to have with the right training, and well the spirit that Togata has as well. To be fair any quirk would be a good quirk to have, especially with the right help on how to train it. It was why you're a hero. You learned as much as you could, trained like hell, and overall just did your best. You turned everything you experienced into the power you showcase whenever you used your quirk.
"Let's get back to class now. Say "thank you"." Aizawa said. All the students yelled it happily. They were beyond excited at the prospect of work studies. Before the three third years left, you ran after them.
"Togata!" They all turned at you.
"Oh cool! You're that hero that disappeared 20 years ago right? How'd that happen? How are you feeling now?" Hado asked you hurriedly. You gave a smile.
"I'm doing just fine now." A lie, but you weren't telling children what you were feeling. No matter how close they felt to you in age. "Togata, I've got a favor to ask."
"I can help however I can!" He exclaimed. Easily giving you a blinding smile.
"You're interning under Sir Nighteye, right?" You asked.
"Yup, I sure do!"
"Great. The next time you're planning on heading over to see him, mind if I tag along? Eraserhead mentioned to me that he might need a healer on his end for things." You asked.
"I sure can ma'am." He replied easily, still giving a carefree smile.
"Great! I'll see you when that happens then alright?"You smiled at the group. "You guys are doing amazing, and Amajiki it's alright to be anxious. Just remember you have support available for you alright?"
"Y-yes ma'am." He replied, hunched over.
You ran back over to the first years leaving the gym. Trailing behind them, you finally succeeded pushing away the negative feeling at least.
☆☆☆☆☆
In the safety of your own room you allowed yourself to finally relax. You were still trying to hold back though. The day was long, and it was difficult to not just break down again. Everything was just hitting you too hard. Thrown into the future, everyone busy and you still having feelings for All Might but him… he moved on. Of course everyone would. You were gone for 20 years. But it hurt. It… it hurt so much. You felt the tears gather in your eyes and sobbed. Your whole body was shaking, and you weren't breathing in properly almost hyperventilating at how hurt you were. The feeling wasn't going away for even a moment. You could just feel more agony, you wished. You really wished that he didn't move on. That you weren't thrown so far into the future. That your childhood friend didn't abuse his children and wife so severely. You wished that you were just better than you actually were. Alas you were just you, you were thrown in time. And you couldn't reverse it.
☆☆☆☆☆
As the days passed it was getting harder to avoid him. You kept walking out whenever he would walk in. You really couldn't handle being near him. You were just avoiding the eventual confrontation that would happen. Avoiding him telling you he was Midoryias father. And then you especially wanted to avoid the press coming to U.A. all together. They could… probably figure something out, and you didn't trust the press too much. You didn't want to see something portraying you as some young gold digger hero trying to ride the coattails of a more experienced pro. You weren't trying to do that at all. You were a good hero on your own. But not a lot of people knew about how you showed up. It could easily be figured out with research, but even then it could still be spun around as such. Or the public view of you could turn to that even if it's not said or even hinted at. You cut your thoughts off. It would do no good to dwell on it. Not when the guest came in.
"Don't worry on my account, Mr. Aizawa. I wanna get a feel for what dorm life is really like, so there's no need for them to act any differently from normal." Was all you heard as you walked by, giving a polite nod to the reporter and exiting the dorms.
Avoid it. Don't even think about it. Ignore it until you could be alone. Don't let anyone see you break. You needed to be strong.
☆☆☆☆☆
You didn't really need anything, you left to mostly wander around. Get a true look at Musutafu and how it's changed over the years. Everything was looking a little better, people were safer. 'Toshi did a good job protecting everyone.' You thought. A symbol of peace didn't exist when you were a kid, just heros doing their best. He truly changed the game for what heros could do. But it wasn't all good was it? You could feel it, the way certain people were staring, how they interacted. There was some underlying tension between people. It was subtle but you learned early to read things like that (you tried forgetting how you learned that, not good to think about that right now). Today you were going to figure out what happened with Kotaro. You needed to know if he was okay. If he was able to be happy, if he was able to become who he wanted to be. You really hoped he was able to. Then you could see him! And spoil him the way you had planned when you were younger. And you could apologize to him. You could finally make it up to him. For missing out on so many things for him. All you had to do was look.
☆☆☆☆☆
You made your way to the detective you'd talked to when you first came to. He was honestly the only one you could talk to in your opinion. He knew you already and understood that you were, by all means, a time traveler, so you trusted him. Toshi trusted him too. Don't think about it. You walked into the police station. You were going to be just fine. You were thankfully easily able to get his attention.
"Ah hello y/l/n. Its good to see you."
"Hello Detective. It's good to see you too." You replied. You stood by awkwardly, watching as he began sorting through paperwork. "I uh know we don't know each other that well. And this might be awkward but I need to ask for your help." You continued. He turned towards you a little panicked, (He knew you were avoiding Toshinori, mostly because the man himself came to him panicked about it, and well you looked exhausted) you didn't register that though, looking down at your feet. "I know we don't know each other that well. But… I really need your help to find someone." You clenched your fists. "He means a lot to me and he was hurting so much before I disappeared. I need to apologize." You looked up at Naomasa with pleading eyes. "I need to apologize to him Naomasa." He looked a little awkward at that.
"I can't help you like that." He said, and you looked away. "I can let you know if I ever hear about him though. It won't look good if I give out his address. But I can keep an eye out for you and let you know." He put a hand on your shoulder, and you looked up at him again. "I'll help as much as possible, just give me the name I need to keep an ear out for."
"Shimura!" You exclaimed in excitement, not seeing how Naomasa froze. "Its Shimura Kotaro!"
☆☆☆☆☆
It was easy to get you to leave after he said he'd help you find Kotaro. He… he couldn't tell you what happened to him though. Not now. Not when you looked at him like that. And you just barely knew about Shigaraki. Plus it was too shocking to know you knew Nanas son. He could hold off on telling you for now. Just so he could figure out how he could. He hoped you didn't figure it out before then. And well… he had to tell Toshinori you knew his mentors kid. How the hell was he going to do that?
☆☆☆☆☆
You were walking back with a little more skip in your step. More excitement than when you left the dorms. Naomasa said he'd help you! You would see Kotaro again. You'd be able to hug him with all the love you had in your heart. Things were finally going to be looking up for you. Finally, things will go right! Just then someone ran past you, and you heard someone cry out "My son!" And everything stopped. There were villains you truly believed could be successful if they had gotten help. But you drew the line when it involved children. You knew how devastating it was to be hurt so young. You immediately began chasing after the person who ran past you, flicking your wrist to have water rush to the child in their arms. They stopped running, pressing a knife against the young boys neck, as they turned towards you.
"Don't think I won't cut him you dumb bitch!" They yelled. They didn't notice the water. And they probably thought you were just some civilian trying to play hero. You narrowed your eyes at them.
"You don't have to hurt them-" they cut you off.
"If you come closer I'll slit their throat!" They snarled at you, the child in their arms was sobbing. Absolutely struggling to contain their tears.
"Its gonna be alright kid. I'm here to keep you safe alright?" You said to them. They looked at you and their lips were wobbling. You gave a reassuring smile. "Besides. They're not a cool villain at all are they? Their situational awareness sucks." The villain narrowed their eyes at you and was about to start screaming again, when you finally made the water move forward fully and covered the little boy in their arms. The blade wasn't even able to touch his skin. Not even a little nick as you forced the child out of their arms and into yours. The villain gaped at you, then tried to turn and run. But you already made sure they were trapped by another flow of water, plus using their own blood to hold them back.
The boy was sobbing in your arms and the mother was finally able to catch up to you, sobbing and reaching out. The boy was able to drop in her arms instantly, with a wobbly voice calling out "mom!" She thanked you profusely after that, and you both waited for police to show up. And you were almost scolded, until they realized you had your license and Naomasa greeted you by calling out your hero name. You and the mother gave your statements as they arrested the person who tried kidnapping the little boy. Kidnapping was a strong word though, they just knew it'd be harder for anyone to catch them if they ran with a kid in their arms. Afterwards you were going to walk off, but a tug at your shirt stopped you. A small hand clutching the lower half of your shirt. He had a small scrape on that hand.
"Thank you for saving me, Ms. Siren." His voice was still wobbly, still shaken up. But he was giving you a bright smile. The mother was smiling at you both, with a grateful smile on her lips and mouthing her own thanks to you.
"Kid, I've gotta thank you too! You were so brave!" You said, crouching down to get a better look at him. "Can I show you a little trick?" You asked, gently grabbing his scraped hand. He gave you a confused nod, but his eyes lit up seeing you create a flow of water and covering his hand with it. Any stinging he felt in his hand vanished in an instant, and his eyes widened in glee.
"Whoa… Ms. Siren you've got the coolest quirk!" He yelled. You didn't see it. But someone walking by saw you heal that little boy, and you didn't know it, but he was working for Overhaul. You wouldn't really know it until much later, unfortunately. But you went back to the dorms, running into the reporter who was just leaving and giving a respectful bow to him. You were safe at the moment. Unknowing of what was about to happen, and how your life was about to change again.
☆☆☆☆☆
"Boss." A voice called out, getting the attention of a man holding a little girl covered in bandages. He nodded in acknowledgement. "There's a new hero out and about. But I think she'd be quite useful to us." He said. The other man passed the little girl off to another person, gesturing them to take her to her room.
"I'm listening."

An Unusual Date (Part 2)
Part 1
The first time they say “I love you” to each other.
Remus could feel the cold air on his face, he refused to get in the car with Sirius, it was still too soon. Sirius didn’t try to coerce Remus into getting into his car, he didn’t demand any explanations or even ask him twice, he simply nodded. Instead, he offered they take their bicycles. “Do this the old school way?” he said.
In that quiet moment in the night, where Sirius drove to his place to get his bike, and Remus followed closely behind, Remus realized that he had fallen into the kind of love that could take centuries to get over, that his soul was somehow linked to Sirius’s in a way that they no longer needed words.
“So what do you wanna do first?” Remus asked him when Sirius was ready with his bike.
“One thing you don’t know about me, Remus Lupin, is that I’ve got keys to the places close to your heart”
Remus just looked at him with confusion, and in all honesty, he couldn’t do much else for how the moon reflected in his dark curls had already rendered him speechless.
“Just trust me tonight yeah?”
“Always,” Remus said.
And so, the two boys cycled around town, in the dead of the night, and for the most part, Remus had no idea where they were going, he just trusted Sirius enough to follow him to the end of the world. “Moons?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you think existence is futile?” he said out of nowhere.
Remus laughed, “Where did that come from?”
“Just look around, we’re in the middle of the most pretentious part of the town, everyone here is practically drowning in money, or blood money as I like to call it, but the moment you take a few turns-” he said, as he turned into an alleyway, and then took another turn “You see that these people, barely have enough to get by, they work themselves to the bone every day just to have a decent meal, but you know what?”
“What?” Remus said
“I don’t hear laughs echoing in the neighbourhood that I live in, no one cares about anyone in the place that I come from, all they care about is this illusion of control and power, every day they wake up stand-in balconies of their pretend palaces, and look down on everyone like they are the rulers of the world when in reality they are all doomed, they will bring their own downfall and I know it”
“Do you think we’ll fall with them?”
“No, I don’t think so, we’ll watch them go down like a domino” Sirius said and laughed
“So you think existence is futile because it’s plagued by rich people,” Remus asked him.
“You know I used to think that, but then you came along and existence has become, well extremely kind to me suddenly, so I don’t think so anymore”
“Yeah?”
“You make me want to get out of bed every morning and smile when I am forced to eat with my extremely obnoxious and vastly uninteresting family, and I suddenly don’t know what to do with all this happiness, I’ve never had this much of it, Remus Lupin, so I quote Mr Darcy to you, you have bewitched my body and soul”
Remus felt overpowered by the emotions running through him, mostly he tried not to cry, where does one find someone like Sirius Black? A boy who pulls him out of his house in the dead of the night to ride his bike in the dingiest parts of the town just so he could talk about how much he hates where he comes from.
“You make existence bearable, and almost comforting” he adds.
Remus doesn’t know what to say, because there’s so much he wants to tell him, he wants to tell him he loves him so much that he fears that if he could put it to words, it would scare him away, he wants to tell him so many things but he’s run out of words.
“We’re here, Sirius says suddenly.
Stopping in front of what looks like an old Library.
“This belonged to my grandfather, this place has books that have been banned everywhere else in the world, but my family has mostly forgotten about it, I am sure no one besides Andromeda and I have stepped inside this place in years”
“Wow, and you brought me here?”
“Of course, when Andromeda first told me that a place like this existed you were the first person I wanted to show, we can bring James and Peter later,”
“Sirius, I-”
“Shh,” He said “We don’t have much time, Moony”
And took Remus’s hand in his own as he unlocked the door, and pulled Remus in behind him.
Remus was immediately entranced by the smell of leather and old books, the place was much bigger than it appeared on the outside, as Sirius slowly switched on the lights he could see how tall the walls stood, and each wall covered with shelves overflowing with books of all shapes and sizes.
For a moment he forgot who he was, and let himself be carried away by the smell and the feel of the spines under his fingers, “You can pick anything you want,” Sirius said, lacing his fingers with Remus’s, “Every book comes with a side of me of course” he added, and Remus laughed but tightened his grip around Sirius’s hands, he wanted to tell him everything he couldn’t quite put to words, the words were building up in his chest and it was driving him crazy that he couldn’t say anything. He stopped then suddenly, because nothing else seemed more important then, nothing but telling Sirius how he felt.
“Moony, are you-” but Sirius never got to ask Remus if he was alright because by then Remus had already pushed him against a shelf, and was kissing him like it was the end of the world. Pulling him closer by the waist, a book fell to the ground around them, but Remus was far too gone to actually care, he was lost in the feel of Sirius’s arms around him.
“Moony” Sirius breathed when they pulled away.
“Sirius”
“Yes?”
“I-” the words choked him, not because he believed in them less, but because he was afraid of showing Sirius the intensity of how much he meant to him, but Sirius pulled him closer and kissed him again, and suddenly all his fears were gone. “I love you, I love you so much if I could show you, I am afraid I’ll scare you, and I am not good with words but I don’t think there’s anyone else for me” he was crying now, “and I love you so much, every time I see you my heart lurches and I am consumed by the desire to be near you, even when I am not with you, I am thinking of you—”
“Re,” Sirius said, and Remus realized that he hadn’t looked at him all this time, he was too afraid but now that he did, he saw the ghost of a smile on his face “When have I ever pretended to be anything less than in love with you? The way I love you, even if I could drink the river of longing dry I would die of thirst, and you think your love will scare me away? Remus, you can break my heart in a thousand pieces, and I’d come back to you holding the broken pieces in my hands”
“We’ve never said that to each other before,” Remus said
“Maybe not in words,” Sirius whispered, his forehead against Remus’s, their noses touching, in Remus’s mind the moment lasts forever, in the dim light of the library, holding Sirius against him, if he died right now he thought to himself, there is no other way he’d rather go.

In Time ~ Chapter Twenty-Three
Summary: Before they leave Rivendell, there is one last thing Amara wishes to share with Thorin, who is a little hungover and a lot grumpy and just might ruin it with his crankiness.
Pairing: Thorin Oakenshield/Amara of Rivendell (female OC)
Characters: Thorin, Amara
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Word Count: 2,217
Tagging: @i-did-not-mean-to @lathalea @tschrist1
Thorin snored.
Loudly.
Amara rose onto her elbow, gazing down at him in the darkness of his chambers. He lay on his back, dark hair spread out beneath him, one hand flung over his head, the other resting on the sheet drawn over his stomach. His mouth was softly slack, and with each inhale, it opened a little wider. For one who was used to sleeping alone and in silence, this was quite the new experience, indeed. Especially since he hadn’t snored the previous evening.
Then again, he’d had more than enough mead at the party. Perhaps that played a part in his noisiness now.
It had been one of the most wonderful evenings she’d ever had. First the party, then the fountain… she smiled, her body still tingling from his attentions as he fulfilled his promise to make love to her beneath the waterfall, and then again when they returned to his chambers. She’d fallen asleep in his arms, her head snuggled in the curve of his shoulder and chest.
Only to be rudely awakened by his snores.
Still, it was difficult to be annoyed as she gazed upon him. Seeing him sleeping here was far different from keeping watch over him in the Healing Room. Although the years seemed to fall away from his face, and the traumas and tragedies melted away just as they seemed to in the Healing Room, he just seemed far more restful now. More at peace.
Finally, he went quiet finally, and she savored the sudden silence, sinking back to curve against him, and the arm that had been above his head came down about her shoulders and tightened against her. She smiled, snuggling closer to him, draping her arm over his hips.
“Why are you studying me?” he asked, his voice thick with sleep.
“You woke me up with your snoring.”
He cracked one eye to peer at her. “I do not snore.”
“Oh, but you most definitely do.”
“You have me confused with someone else.”
“I don’t, but I also don’t wish to fight about it. There was one last thing I wished to share with you before we leave and dawn is the best time to see it.”
“See what?”
She pressed a kiss into his beard, then slipped away to move to the edge of the bed, where she swung her legs over the side and said, “You have to come with me.”
“It’s the middle of the night.”
“It’s almost dawn. Trust me.”
He let out a heavy sigh and sat ups rubbing his eyes with both hands. “When I fall from my pony later, it will be your fault.”
“You won’t fall.” She slid into the gray leggings and tunic she’d worn earlier and straightened to see him still sitting against the headboard, the sheets pooled about his hips. His dark hair lay tangled about his shoulders and he still rubbed one eye. “Thorin, please… I really would like to share this with you and I may not get the chance to do it again.”
“Very well.”
She watched with no little appreciation as he rose from the bed and strode across to where his trousers lay draped over the chair in the corner. He climbed into them, turning as he fastened them and it took every bit of will she possessed to not throw herself at him right then and there, but she truly did wish to share this with him before they left.
He paused, one brow rising as he said, “You have that look in your eye.”
“Me? What look?”
“The same one you had before you lured me into that fountain.”
“No.” She shook her head. “No look. I think the darkness is playing tricks on you, dwarf.”
He tugged his discarded henley over his head, his, “I don’t think so,” somewhat muffled by the fabric.
She caught him by the hand. “Hush and come with me.”
“Where are we going?”
“You will see.”
He let out a husky sigh. “Why can you not just tell me?”
“Because even if I did, it would mean nothing to you.” She rolled her eyes as she led him out of his chambers and along the colonnade toward the western lawn. The canopy was still up, the tables beneath it still there, but completely cleared, and Amara did a double take when she saw feet poking out along the northern side. “Is that—?”
“Bofur.” Thorin finished grimly. “He’s good for this. He came to Erebor late because he’d gotten so far into his cups the night before we left and wound up missing the boat. Spent the night under the Lake-town master’s kitchen table. Let’s pay him no mind, the fool. Someone will come along and knock him awake.”
“I hope Elrond doesn’t get upset.”
“It would serve him right if he did.”
She glanced over at him. “You are grouchier than usual, Mr. Oakenshield.”
“I’ve a headache. And I did not plan on being up at dawn.” He squinted up at the sky which was still mostly midnight blue, with only hints of the first pinkish-gold light of dawn. “And it isn’t even actually dawn yet.”
She didn’t answer right away, as she certainly did not wish to start the day off with a fight. Carefully, she said, “Perhaps you had one too many tankards last eve.”
“As if that was even possible,” he scoffed. “A short night’s sleep doesn’t help, either.”
“Oh, are you actually complaining about having to sleep with me?”
“What?” He rubbed his forehead with his free hand, then shook his head. “No. No, of course not. It’s simply I am tired. With a headache.”
“Grump.” She led him away from the colonnade, and toward the southwestern corner, where there was a break in the low marble wall. “When we return, I will make you a headache powder and you will feel good as new.”
“Can we just go back now then?”
She stopped and with a sigh of exasperation, said, “Fine.”
With that, she spun about and started back toward the palace when he caught her by the wrist. “I’m sorry, amrâlimê,” he murmured, tugging her back toward him. “You’re right, I am grumpy and I probably did have too much to drink last eve. Come, show me what you wished me to see. No more complaints, I promise.”
She glared at him, but then relented. “Fair enough. Now, come along.”
He slipped his hand down to lace his fingers with hers and brought her hand up to his lips. “Show me.”
Her irritation faded and she resumed her stride toward the break in the wall. A narrow path began at that break and he paused. “This isn’t like the Northern Pathway, is it?”
“No. It’s far better. Trust me. No orcs.”
He didn’t look entirely convinced, but to her relief, he held his tongue and let her lead him along the narrow dirt trail that wound through leafy oak trees and rose bushes that had just begun budding. It was still dark, but that didn’t matter, for she knew it like the back of her hand.
“When I was still training,” she said, her voice low to keep from spoiling the magic of the woods, “I would come here when things grew too hectic, or if I’d had a terrible day. It’s so peaceful and was a wonderful place to come and think or just get away from everyone else. I tend not to come here so often now, as I need to stay closer to the Healing Room, but that hasn’t dimmed my love for it.”
He looked around, gazing up at the trees that seemed to go on forever. “What is this place?”
“It’s just a wood, Thorin. A place to come and think, or just let your mind wander wherever it might go. I come here now when I have trouble sleeping and need to put as much distance between myself and everyone else as possible.”
“You have trouble sleeping?”
She nodded, looking over at him. “Why do you sound so surprised?”
“Because you are the most serene person I have ever met,” he told her, drawing her up against him. “Nothing seems to trouble you.”
“Plenty troubles me,” she said, slipping her free arm about his waist. “I came up here quite a bit when you and your nephews first arrived.”
“Did they give you a hard time?”
“No. Only you did.” She held his gaze. “You were a difficult patient in the beginning, you know. Very angry and very frustrated and while I understood, it didn’t necessarily make it any easier to hear.”
His eyes softened. “I am so sorry for anything I said then, Amara,” he murmured. “I was not in my right mind.”
“I know. And you are absolutely forgiven. You were in terrible pain, engulfed in guilt, and angry at everyone and everything around you. And that’s not why I brought you here at all.” She slipped her hands free to catch his face between them. “So, I do not want you feeling guilty about what you said or did in those first few weeks, because I, of all people, understand where those words came from.”
“I will always feel the guilt I carry over what I have said and done,” he told her softly. “How can I not?”
She bit back a sigh and shook her head. How did she convince him that it would be all right for him to forgive himself, when everyone else around him already had? His people, his nephews all made that very clear to her. They loved him, respected him, would still do whatever he asked of them, and yet…
“Come. We’re almost there.” She pulled away to lead him once more. The path rose and wound about until they were up on a high promontory. “This is what I wanted to share with you, Thorin.”
As she spoke, she led him to the edge, were rocks ringed the edge like a natural barrier. In the distance, Rivendell’s main waterfall spilled from high above, into a large pool that glimmered like a polished opal set into the earth. To the east, the sun’s rays had just begun to stretch like golden fingers across the paling sky. As those rays touched the earth, Thorin came up behind her, easing his arms about her waist to pull her against his chest. He said not a word, his thumbs brushing lightly against her stomach. She leaned against him, smiling as he pressed his cheek against hers and murmured, “Abnâmul…”
“Isn’t it? I love the sunrise.”
“I meant you, amrâlimê.”
Her eyes stung at his whispered words, her hands coming down to cover his. His arms tightened about her as the sun broke over the horizon to streak the sky coral and gold. The golden fingers reached to the ends of Middle Earth, or so it seemed, and somewhere, in that distance, stood the Lonely Mountain. Thorin’s home. Soon to be her home.
Dawn broke, the light bringing the world to life as birds began their morning songs. She leaned her head into Thorin’s cheek and said, “My mother once told me that the birds sing in the morning because it is their way of letting their partners know they survived the night. It’s a song of hope, of a fresh start to a new day. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I’ve always rather liked the idea that it might be.”
He gave her a gentle squeeze. “I thank you for sharing this, Amara.”
“It’s always been my favorite spot in Rivendell,” she said, her throat tightening as tears stung her eyes, “and I will miss it.”
“We have sunrises in Erebor, you know. And I will gladly watch one with you any morning.”
She turned toward him. “Even if it means a short night’s sleep? When you’ve had too much to drink?”
“Even then.” He nodded. “Not that I had too much to drink, mind you.”
“Of course you didn’t.” She smiled as she met his gaze. Even a short night’s sleep and too much mead the night before couldn’t make him look bad. He was simply too handsome. The morning light caught the amethyst in his hair, the smoke inside it swirling slowly. “I love you.”
His eyes softened once more and he leaned in to brush her lips with his as he whispered back, “I love you, too.”
Amara hated to break that soft, teasing kiss, but she knew he wished to depart Rivendell in only a few hours, and so she pulled back. “We should make our way back. I still have a few things I need to pack.”
“We can come back, you know,” he told her as they made their way along the path toward the palace once more.
“Oh, I know. But it is such a long journey, I doubt we will do so often. Especially once we have children.”
“I say we come back more often then and let them splash in the fountains as well.”
“You just want to see Elrond crack, don’t you?”
“It might be a sight to see.”
“You are evil, Thorin Oakenshield, do you know that?”
“Tell me I am wrong, though.”
“If only I could.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I wanted a room with two queens and an east facing window!” the woman with short, curled hair informed for the tenth time, her face already beet red as she yelled at you.
“Ma’am, I am sorry. I see we booked you with two queens and you’ll be on our seventh floor, with a south facing window,” you started to explain calmly.
“Does south sound like east to you? Jesus Christ, where do they hire you lazy brats?” she asked.
Your poker face didn’t waiver though. You didn’t close your eyes, or take a deep breath, or shake your head slightly. You continued to smile and apologize.
“You’re absolutely right, ma’am. But with the awards in the city and the influx of visitors for the winter--”
“I don’t care if all of Europe is here, I booked this trip over three months ago! My room should be available to me now!” she shouted, causing other patrons in the nearly full lobby to stare at the two of you.
That was the good and bad thing about being a hotel right outside the city center, just on the outskirts. You didn’t get entirely booked a lot, but on rare occasions you did, it meant something.
You had been asked to step in for your coworker Danielle, when the woman found out she wasn’t on an east facing window. You’d been going back and forth with her for over twenty minutes now, her screaming in your face. This wasn’t super atypical as a hotel manager. Angry patrons of the hotel, confused guests, exhausted tourists, frustrated honeymooners...It was your job to ensure every stay here was a pleasant one, and you did want that. Why wouldn't you? But on some days, people like Mrs. Taucht here really wore on your nerves. Why did people have to be so cruel and mean when all you were doing was trying to provide them with excellent service?
Smiling your best customer smile, you offered sweetly, “I am terribly sorry. I can refund you some of your money and perhaps you could take the south facing room, and as soon as an east facing room is available I’ll inform you.”
“Some?! Some of my money?” she shrieked, shaking her head. “I want all of my money back and free room service! This is absolutely ridiculous.” She turned to look to another guest waiting to check in. “Do you believe this?” she asked him, and you’d been so preoccupied focusing on her, you hadn’t noticed that the lobby was so getting backed up. You quickly turned to Danielle.
“Open up check in five, and start taking everyone from this line immediately. Check everyone in as fast as you can,” you quietly spoke to her as Mrs. Taucht ranted to the man in the line behind her.
Danielle nodded and waved everyone over from your line, telling them that she could help them at the end of the counter, while Todd, Eric, and Trish helped as quickly as they could on their lanes.
“Actually, I can,” the man with golden hair responded politely. “I’ve been to this city many times and you wouldn’t believe how crowded it can get and how fast,” he informed.
“But I made these reservation months ago,” she reiterated.
“Well, with all respect, ma’am, you do have a room,” the guest retorted. “It’s just not the one you wanted. If I were you, I would ask for a full refund of your room, take that, and go the room they have booked for you. I would prefer any room, to standing here in the lobby, shouting at the manager…But that’s just me.”
Mrs. Taucht stared at the man, then turned back to you slowly. “What he said,” she sighed. “Can you give me the full refund and forget the room?”
“Absolutely, ma’am. It was our mistake, and I do apologize. I will throw in free breakfast every day for your stay, for your patience and understanding. Is that alright?”
She nodded her head side to side. “I would say that’s fair. Thank you.”
“Thank you, ma’am. I will get to work on this refund for you, and it’ll be settled when you leave, okay?” you sweetly said.
“Alright.”
At that, she took her things and left, heading for the elevators to the rooms. You wanted to take a deep breath, but refrained, trying to keep composure for the nice guest that was next.
“Just a moment, sir, let me enter some notes for her account,” you said politely before clacking in all the notes for you to finish later tonight. “I deeply apologize for that. I know you’ve been waiting and now you’re about to wait more.” You let a small laugh out, hoping to lighten the mood.
“I’m in no rush, besides, you’ve got your hands full,” he said with a sideways grin. He was rather handsome, now that he was closer. Warm, brown eyes, dark blonde hair, a reserved smile...But something about him seemed familiar. He had said he stayed in the city a lot. Maybe he’d checked in once before. But...his face didn’t look like one you’d forget.
“You noticed that, hmm?” you asked with a bigger laugh.
“Hard to miss,” he remarked.
“Too true. Thank you, for putting in a good word for me, there, by the way,” you said. This random man had no reason to stick up for you or make your job or day easier.
“Oh it was nothing. I was just trying to get her to move so I could get checked in,” he said evenly.
The humor whisked away from you as you nodded, realizing he wasn’t really helping you.
“Right,” you concurred, as you finished up the notes, your eyes shooting down to the computer screen.
He leaned forward and smiled at you. “I’m joking. I was happy to help.”
Your eyes flitted back up to him as a giant grin spread across your face. This was new for you, unusual. People didn’t really go out of their way to help you. You were a bit of a wallflower all your life. Not an outcast, but not the brightest star. You were the girl that no one picked out of a crowd. You were the girl that was overlooked, rather than looked over. It wasn’t so much your looks, you’d always felt you looked average. But that was the problem: you were average. Average looks, average grades, average car, average education. Nothing about you was stellar.
Maybe that’s why Jason had left. Your boyfriend of two years had decided to dump you five days ago, just after the new year. What a way to kick it off…
“Well thank you, again. What name is your reservation under?” you asked as you queued to the page to look up check ins.
“Hayden...Christensen,” he warmly informed, seeming to hesitate though.
You smiled and nodded. “Ah. Found you. Two queens, sixth floor, room 602. Is that alright?”
“As long as it has a bed and a TV, I could care less,” he said with a shrug and a smile.
“Simple man?” you lightly inquired as you got out his room keys and began to scan the code to them.
“Relatively,” he replied with another shrug. “You? Simple woman?” he asked.
“In some ways, yeah, I’d like to think so,” you said, contemplating.
“And in others?” he inquires.
“Well...none of us are simple, are we?” you questioned, a bit of ominimity in your voice.
He nodded slightly. “I suppose that’s true.”
You stared at him a moment longer, not exactly realizing you were staring until it became awkward and you realized you needed to hand him the room keys and information.
“Ah! Here are your keys, here is a brochure to the spa, restaurants, and room service. Here is the number to the concierge, the manager--me, and the hotel operator,” you said, pointing at everything with a pen.
“Thank you very much,” he said, taking his cards and the pamphlet.
“Any time, sir. I’m Y/N if you need anything, or if you need a manager, feel free to give me a call at any time,” you said warmly. Typically, you didn’t lay on that extra charm unless a customer was overtly rude or incredibly nice, and in this case he was incredibly nice, very handsome, and you still had this gnawing feeling that you’d seen him somewhere before. Therefore, if he was a returning patron to the hotel, you wanted to make him feel extra special.
“Will do. Thanks,” he said as he grabbed his bags, waved to you, and took off toward the elevators.
Once he was out of sight, you dealt with the new family coming up to check in and your day continued as usual. The rest of the shift, you were racking your brain trying to remember where you’d seen him from. You couldn’t place it at all, and that bothered you because typically you didn’t forget a face. After awhile though, you shrugged it off, figuring it would come to you later.
In your down time, after verifying the room service orders were fulfilled, requests were taken care of, and the kitchen staff was on schedule, you sat down and began playing around with some music, scribbling down some lyrics in your ratty notebook that you carried with you everywhere.
Okay, your tags on The Empty Post have showed up in my notes and I have to ask. Tell me more. Tell me it all. All of the feelings and thoughts about that scene because what I’ve seen so far? Absolute perfection and I agree wholeheartedly.
Thank you! Okay I basically unloaded most of my thoughts in my tags here but let’s go through this one more time. I may add: this was already said a thousand times by better meta writers than me 3 years ago when season 13 was actually airing. And I will ramble a little about Purgatory, too. Now with that out of the way:
The Empty. Canonically it is a being, a living immortal being that rules the place or an ‘anti-place’ where angels and demons go are sent to when they die to dream of their regrets forever (this sounds awful and like a punishment for dying despite being immortal, for getting themselves killed or something). Also: the Empty was there before Creation, the Nothingness before Darkness and before Light.
Okay. But let’s see what other things the Empty represents: lack of anything. Complete nothingness that Cas got sucked into (by Lucifer but also by helping the Winchesters). Now we know that Cas‘I am afraid I might kill myself’tiel had his issues, right (I still can’t believe that we are praising 8x08 thee Hunteri Heroici for being a filler episode with Cas - which is awesome, don’t get me wrong - but we all keep forgetting what he actually did say to Dean there!!! Dean says: are you afraid the angels will kill you if you show up in Heaven? And Cas looks straight into his eyes and says: After all I’ve done, when I see Heaven, I am afraid I might kill myself).
Please remember that it’s not only Dean, Mr. ‘Purgatory was pure’. Cas, after all he did in season 6, after his death in s7, after coming back and being literally haunted by everything he’s done, must have felt that Purgatory was liberating, too. It was some kind of an Alternative Universe where he didn’t have to face the consequences of his actions. He was free of them. It was literally his escape AND additionally it was (well, according to good old christian lore, maybe not specifically spn lore) a place where you are supposed to atone for your sins so there must have been the feeling of atoning, of making things right without actually doing anything specific, where having to survive and not get eaten by the Leviathans was his main problem (= surviving was just enough, nothing was asked of him), which, compared to all he’s done, wasn’t that hard or difficult. He found himself running away from Leviathans which could mirror running away from consequences of his actions - but it was Purgatory, it was at the same time atoning for what he did. It was EASY.
Cas basically confirms that he officially stayed in Purgatory because he didn’t think he deserved to go back to Earth and that is true but what he doesn’t say is: ‘Purgatory was pure and easy and kill or be killed and no other worries than that, no thinking, no real responsibilities which actually was a nice escape from the real world after all I did and been through in the past 3 years’. He wanted out, he wanted an easy choice. Okay, maybe he wasn’t actively looking for an easy way out but when it presented itself - when they appeared in Purgatory - he took it like a gift. We’re talking about a character who spent all his life following orders, who finally broke free and found himself completely lost in the freedom of choices, directionless and maybe wanted an escape. He must have felt overwhelmed but all this freedom (which he basically confirms in 6x20 freedom is a length of rope and god wants you to hang yourself with it). I COMPLETELY understand that choice to escape.
So in seasons 8-12 Cas has a lot of stuff going on in his head, he gets lobotomized for most of season 8, he is hurt and tortured and treated like shit for most of season 9 and 10 and he ultimately gives himself up to Lucifer in s11 and then he almost dies in 12x12 and he never really got to talk about all of this or work this things out with anyone because Sam or Dean are not really the most talkative guys and Dean in 10x09 basically tells Cas to ‘let it go and not think about it’ which is a shitty advice to someone who suffers from some mental issues if I am being honest (this is like. ur depressed? oh go for a run and smile and stop being sad!!! kind of advice if you ask me). So these issues only grow and grow and start eating him up and please remember that at the very same time Cas is falling in love. I said it previously but I think the moment he realizes what he really feels is 12x12 when he is dying. In that moment he is able to name this feeling but it’s of course covered by: ‘I love you. I love all of you’.
Now in season 12 he finally gets a proper arc with Kelly (god bless her, honestly, she and Cas had one of the most healthy relationships ever portrayed on tv and it wasn’t even romantic, I could go off about this but it’s getting really long anyway). So he kind of is on his way to find a purpose again - Dean is saved (from hell, from Michael, from the Mark), so he focuses on Kelly and unborn Jack and maybe in his relationship with her he rediscovers love (not necessarily romantic but he sees how she loves Jack) and he does all he can to protect her from basically everyone including the Winchesters. And he promises he will take care of Jack and then. Then he is killed by Lucifer (shattered at the altar of Winchester because he gets involved in the Apocalypse World because of them while having built something for himself with Kelly and Jack BUT still not having properly processed all his previous trauma).
Okay, so fast forward: Cas is woken up by Jack in the Empty. He is of course confused and stuff (we still don’t know what was he dreaming about all this time he spent there now that we know this is a place where angels and demons dream about their mistakes and regrets <- fanfiction gap #1). He wakes up, he is ‘greeted’ by the Empty and one of the first things he says is that he has to go back because Sam and Dean need him.
This is his first, automatic thought - I (probably) don’t want to go back, but Sam and Dean need me so I have to, I don’t want to go back for myself because I never wanted to since Purgatory but I know I have to. He doesn’t even think about Jack in this moment. I... maybe it is a stretch but I sense a kind of fear in these words. It’s like he thinks: ‘if I had the chance to come back and chose not to come back from selfish reasons then if the Winchesters ever find out about this they will be angry at me’. But I might be reading too much into this, but on the other hand Jesus fucking Christ this is precisely what happened in Purgatory. He chose to stay although he had a chance to return and the effect was Dean being mad at him. Talk about trauma--
Then the Empty (who was in Cas’ mind) voices his biggest fears:
'I know who you love, I know what you fear. There is nothing for you back there. Wouldn't you rather be a fond memory than a constant festering disappointment?'
There is a lot to unpack here because this is the Empty’s (who, as stated at the beginning can be read as a manifestation of not only death but also Cas’ depression and self-worth issues) reaction to Cas saying that Sam and Dean need him. She says: uh oh you’re wrong<3 I know who you love, what you fear, the is nothing there for you, sweetie. Essentially: they don’t need you. No one needs you or wants you there. They are better off without you. Wouldn’t you rather be a fond memory (of actually being useful as in: saving Dean from hell, helping to stop the Apocalypse, helping to fight the Leviathans) than a disappointment (failing powers, makes mistake after a mistake, chooses to protect the unborn Antichrist rather than killing him before he’s born - and not to make this whole thing worse but this is what Dean has the audacity to say to Cas in 15x03: why if something goes wrong it always seem to be you).
I will now allow myself for some privacy, because I am a person who dealt with these kind of thoughts in my head for years, these are straight up suicidal thoughts: no one needs you, no one wants you, you are a disappointment and if you die you will be fondly remembered, everyone is better off without you. And we know Cas was suicidal because he literally tells us in 8x08 and we have no proof that he somehow got rid of these thoughts, ever. If anything, they were always there, present, if not growing. Thoughts like that don’t just disappear. Please remember one more time what was happening to Cas in seasons 8-11. He wasn’t healing. He was getting worse, while all this time managing to keep his head above water for someone else, while the guilt was rising and rising.
If the Empty represents all his issues: depression, suicidal thoughts, guilt, self-hate, lack of self-worth, and what she offers is: eternal sleep. Maybe not entirely peaceful sleep, but sleep nevertheless, no consequences, no facing your fears, no dealing with anything, an escape, sleep -
And she prompts him to stop fighting, to go back to sleep because there is nothing to fight for (now the symbolism of him being waken up by JACK who was his new found purpose just before he got killed), but she makes a mistake to confront his thoughts and fears with him. She makes a mistake of taking a ‘physical’ form, putting on his face and voice his fears. And Cas is a warrior and he kind of hates himself, so his instinct was to fight. Of course it was easier not to think about all of these stuff at all, to push it back, to try to forget. But once he was forced to face all of these? He fought back. AND HE WON!!!!!
WHAT A MESSAGE TO SEND RIGHT?!!! You might have all these issues and not want to face them because you feel you will crush under them but look: when you are forced to face them it turns out you are somehow way stronger than them!!! The moment you choose to fight you already won, you are already saved!!! Because ultimately these are your thoughts and this is your mind and you control it, no one else! The moment you decide, you choose, to take control: you win. You are saved because you chose to save yourself because you decided you are worth saving. And the Empty (and everything she represents) immediately gets angry and lets him go, ultimately annoyed because he dared to defy her and she just can’t win with someone who decides he wants to be free. WHAT. 👏🏻 A. 👏🏻 WONDERFUL. 👏🏻 MESSAGE. 👏🏻
So... Having said all that. There is only one thing left: I have NO IDEA. NO IDEA. HOW HE FOUND THE STRENGTH. TO STAND UP AND SAY THIS:
I'm already saved. You can prance and you can preen and you can scream and yell and remind me of my failings but somehow, I'm awake. And I will stay awake and I will keep you awake until we both go insane. I will fight you. Fight you and fight you for... ever. For eternity.
A FUCKING ICON. STRONGEST CHARACTER EVER. YOUR FAVE COULD NEVER--
Oh How Far They’ve Come (Iksong)
Hey everyone!! I’m back writing fanfics after a break :) I’ve been hooked on Hospital Playlist and am really sad that season 2 is over. I felt like there were many opportunities for my favourite couple Iksong (Ikjun and Songhwa) to show their relationship development and thought of writing a little “fix-it” type fic. Hope you enjoy!!❤️
Also available on AO3 (here)
“Did Uju go camping with Mone and her appa?” Her voice broke the serene sound of a campfire crackling.
“Mmhm” Ikjun nodded with a smile and sipped his beer. “Mr Jang sure knows how to entertain them. Last week, they played a character quiz game.”
Songhwa chuckled at that last detail, imagining little Uju and Mone yelling out character names in less than 3 seconds while sitting around the campfire.
“I want to tag along.”
“Eo, let’s tag along next time.”
The two doctors’ laughter died down and relished in the quiet that emerged, one that was no longer awkward. In its place, happiness. Ikjun was the first to speak again.
“Aren’t you due for a medical exam soon?” He was referring to the cancer scare that Songhwa had some time back. Back when Ikjun was too worried to let the woman he loves face getting the results alone.
Tilting her head slightly, Songhwa replied “yep, it’s next week.”
“And your mom’s neurology appointment?”
“In two weeks.”
Glancing at his girlfriend’s face momentarily before looking straight ahead was what the man did, but he realised something in those few seconds. His eyes wandered back to find hers. Moving his body to face hers, he could help the slight smirk that formed as he said “You’re sleepy, aren’t you?”
Songhwa paused briefly before smiling sheepishly at his words. He caught her. “Eo, I’m about to fall asleep sitting here.” The woman pointed at her forehead, slightly drunk, and giggled. Ikjun chuckled at her antics.
Placing her hand on his upper arm and rubbing gently, Songhwa told Ikjun goodnight and headed for the tent. The latter nodded his head, acknowledging her intent to go to sleep. As he heard her unzip the tent, Ikjun gazed into the fire, lost in his thoughts. The last time we were here…
Not knowing how much time passed, Ikjun sipped his beer and smiled as he came out of his bubble. Looking at the beautiful night sky and the B-104 sign, he placed his can of beer down and headed towards their tent.
Their tent. Oh how far they’ve come…
Ikjun crawled into the tent as quietly as he could, with hopes of not waking the sleeping beauty. Turns out, Songhwa was doing some thinking of her own and snapped out of it when she felt his presence. She immediately scooted close to her boyfriend, seeking his warmth and comforting embrace. She didn’t understand why she put off dating him for so long if it meant getting to fall asleep and wake up next to him.
“Finally you’re here. I was starting to think that you fell asleep outside.” The whisper fell from her lips as he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close to his chest.
“And leave me with the bears? No way! Who would protect you otherwise?” Ikjun retaliated and ended up receiving an elbow to his stomach.
The pair laid like that for what seemed like forever, until Songhwa turned to face him. “Ikjun ah”
“Hm?”
“Thank you” she opened her eyes to see his brown ones full of confusion. “Thank you for not giving up on me. On us. Thank you for waiting 22 years.”
Ikjun’s heart melted at her words. He knew how hard it was for her to vocalize her feelings.
Instead of using words, Ikjun leaned down and captured Songhwa’s lips in a gentle kiss. This kiss, unlike their first, meant something simpler. Thank you too.
Breaking apart, it was her who first uttered those words. Followed by him.
Ms. Bodyguard - Codename Sweetheart
Summary: Jensen is used to be the hero on his show. He’s not a coward, not at all - but when he gets attacked by an unknown man the studio insists on a full-time bodyguard. Specialist in protecting people while living with them - you agree to protect Jensen but he doesn’t like the fact a ‘small’ girl shall protect him. Will you be able to protect the unwilling actor?
Pairing: Jensen Ackles x Bodyguard!Reader
Characters: Jared Padalecki, Clif Kosterman
Warnings: angst, mentions of stalking, mentions of blood/murder, characters death tension, slow burn
A/N: A shorter chapter to get to know more about Y/N's past and the case.
Ms. Bodyguard Masterlist
“Yeah, I know. I have no authority, and that this is your case, but my client got attacked. The girl stalking him got brutally murdered and you are telling me shit.
Now we can play nice and you tell me if you found, the same fingerprints the attacker left at Mr. Ackles trailer, at the crime scene of the latest murder or not.
I want to clarify if it’s the same perpetrator. I know you couldn’t identify the man and I know you wouldn’t tell me a name.
All I want to know is if the person killing the poor girl is the same man trying to kill my client.”
Jensen listens to you yelling at the cops. He can imagine your hands on your hips, a dark look on your face and your lips, oh your lips contorted in anger.
“Phew, she will kill those guys if she won’t get information.” Jared snickers.
Clif shrugs not hiding the grin on his face. “Y/N can get the information in no time from someone else but, she tried to play nice and exchange information with the local police.”
“They won’t give her shit,” Jensen grumbles while your voice gets louder. He presses his ear to the door when the cop’s mumble something and you finally snap.
“Keep your information. I’ll call someone above your pay grade to get the needed information to save my client’s life. Thanks for nothing.” The door gets ripped open and Jensen bumps into your chest, nose-first.
“Care to explain?” Smirk on your lip you look at Jensen who tries to part his face from your breasts. “I know they look inviting, but this doesn’t mean you can just throw yourself at me.”
“Sorry, I was just trying to hear what’s going on.” When he finally manages to get up Jensen sheepishly looks at you. “I didn’t try to…I mean.”
“I get it, Jensen.” Looking at Clif you give him an eye-roll. “Waste of time but at least this way they can’t blame me for not sharing information. We will have all we need back at Jensen’s house. A friend of a friend owes me one.”
Jensen still doesn’t know how to react around you. Again, you have to take the lead and grasp for his hand. “Arm around my waist, no talking to any reporter. We will use the front entrance.”
“Isn’t the back entrance better?” Jared rubs his arm nervously, not wanting you to press him against the wall again.
“Let’s say someone leaked that Mr. Ackles and Padalecki will leave the police station using the back entrance.
The front entrance will be crowded too but at least most of the reporter will be at the backside of the building.” Clif snickers, watching Jensen glance at you, impressed.
“Good. I’ll use the back entrance, act as if I am waiting for you and we’ll meet at Jensen’s place. Do you need help with your equipment?” You smile but shake your head. All your belongings are already in the trunk of your bulletproof car.
“I got everything I need. Let me bring sweetheart home and we can talk about the shit going on here. I got no clue why the guy should kill the poor girl.”
Leading Jensen away from the office you try to wrap your mind around the case.
“Maybe she was part of his plan. A confused young girl with mental health problems. If he was gaslighting her – maybe…fuck…”
“Something wrong, Terminator?” Jensen grins, looking at you while his hand squeezes your waist. “You know, everyone will believe we have an affair.”
“No, they will believe we are deeply in love if you can put on a great show. Whoever is after you wants one of two things.” Humming Jensen glances at your lips while trying to follow your explanations. “He wants you, or he wants you dead.”
“Honestly, both options don’t sound appealing. I mean, not that I would have anything against a nice guy flirting with me, but that guy is ten times flying above the cuckoo’s nest crazy.”
Now you chuckle and Jensen gives you a cocky smirk. “Knew I can make you laugh.”
“Stop acting, sweetheart. I know you are scared to hell and back. Just relax and trust me. I will not let anyone hurt you, Jensen. All you need to do is following my order.”
Not convinced by glad you agreed to protect him Jensen nods silently. “This situation is hard; I know but we need to outsmart whoever is after you.”
“Okay…”
“Good, now back to the Batcave, sweetheart.” Smirking you lead Jensen out of the police station.
Your skilled eyes search the area for any threat. You know, sometimes five seconds decide if your client lives or dies. “Just relax, Jensen. I am with you…”
“Good. Cameras are on; the alarm system too. Not too bad, Jensen. I will have a friend come around tomorrow to check on the windows downstairs and the security. He’s an expert in breaking and entering.” Eyebrows furrowed Jensen watches you built up your equipment.
“A lot of monitors and…” When Jensen tries to touch your equipment, you slap his hand away. “Ouch, what’s that over there?” Pointing toward a strange device he gapes at you.
“Movement detector, newest generation. While you were sleeping like a princess, I checked on your house and prepared everything.
Any movement outside the house, I’ll get alerted. Any movement inside the house, I’ll get alerted so…” Patting Jensen’s chest you smirk. “No late-night dates or girls sneaking into your house.”
“You’re a freaking…I got no clue who you are. I mean, you look like a cute girl, but then you push Jared against the wall as if he weighs nothing. You could take anyone down and…” Humming you activate the last monitor. “Who are you?”
“Sweetheart, if I ever tell you who I am, you are as good as dead. Let’s say a friend of a friend offered me a job during my time at a university which’s name I will not drop.
It was a good offer, an interesting one but sometimes – the things sounding too good to be true are nightmares.” Your voice is steady, your face stoic but your eyes betray you this time.
“CIA? NSA? Someone we do not know about?” Jensen tries but all he gets is a gentle pat to his cheek. “I get it, top secret. The thing with the girl and the knife, Yakuza…”
“I can only tell you that I had missions and I always accomplished them. I was their good soldier, the one they sent when everyone else gave up. Like with the little girl I told you about. I was loyal…until…I wasn’t…” Now your voice cracks and you turn your attention back toward the monitors.
“Someone fucked you over…huh?” Jensen looks over your shoulder, laughing as Clif and Jared walk toward the house. “Dudes look awful on those monitors.”
“Not someone fucked me over. I fucked them over after getting a mission I did not want to accomplish. They didn’t give me a chance…you know.
When you are in, you are in. Or you are out and no one gets out alive…” Walking toward the front door you turn around to watch Jensen frown.
“I don’t know you, but I guess they wanted you to do something immoral.”
“All I did for them was kinda immoral, Jensen, but that’s part of the job. They do not send you to save a girl. They send you to save the girl to blackmail her powerful father to cooperate.
Not that this ever happened, of course…” A blink later you fall silent, remembering Jensen is only a client, not a friend. “This was all hypothetically…”
“Sure…pure fiction…”
“The friend of my friend sent me the file. Let’s see…shit…” Your eyes narrow and you feel the pit in your stomach grow.
“This is too perfect. I mean…fuck me…” Tossing the folder onto the table you get up to shove Jensen's shirt upward.
“Whoa, buy me a coffee first. What are you...?” When you rip the band-aid off his wound your frown deepens. “Something wrong? Terminator?”
“I guess someone tries to fuck me over once again. The wound, it’s like I would’ve attacked you to make sure everyone believes I wanted to kill you, without killing you.”
Jensen watches you carefully check on the wound while his heart beats a mile in a minute.
“You mean, a Terminator tried to kill me?” Chuckling Jensen tries to lighten your mood, but you don’t have nerves to laugh now. “Y/N?”
“The girl, whoever killed her was an expert. The cuts were precise like a surgeon slit her throat open. She must’ve been dead in the blink of an eye without pain.
This wasn’t a crazy fan’s doing, that guy is skilled…” Putting a new band-aid onto Jensen’s wound you try to wrap your mind around the new information.
“He had to get rid of her, Jensen. This was an execution hidden behind a murder. I don’t know what’s going on, but I suggest you stay close to me and do not meet up with anyone.”
Looking at Jensen you take a deep breath. “Tell me who you fucked over for them to send a killer sending you more than one message…”
Read Into Me Chapter 3: The Scarlet Letter
Steve arrived first to Mr. Lawrence’s homeroom, his paper shoved to the back of his notebook. He was happy to have the distraction of Vicki and Tina jabbering at him. He didn’t want to think about his paper. English wasn’t his best subject, but he could hide it from his peers when it was just the teacher and him going back and forth on essays, him writing and them marking. Now, somebody was going to know that he wasn’t good at this. Nancy knew, of course, and while she didn’t say it she always seemed a bit judgemental over his lack of essay writing skill. She was good at everything; it made him feel like he was in good hands when they were together, like they both had something to offer. Apart, it made him feel stupid and secondary, like he was awful at everything. Truth be told, he didn’t exactly know what he had even offered to that relationship, looking back he couldn’t understand why he thought he was worth anything in a relationship at all.
When he sat down, the desk next to him was empty. Steve wasn’t usually early to class, so he was a bit relieved to not see you there. Maybe he could avoid the eminent roasting of his work.
You got to school late. You were absolutely drenched from head to toe. You had walked to school that day, and a sudden rainstorm hit you halfway through, soaking you before you could make it to the building. To make it worse, you’d decided to wear white for the first time in forever. You rushed to your locker in the hopes to change and luckily you’d left a stained sweatshirt there from the previous semester. You’d pushed your wet hair up and away from your face and rubbed away the bits of black eyeliner that had flaked down you cheeks. You looked like shit and you knew it. It was turning into a less than successful morning. You hadn’t even had a chance to look in your locker mirror once you’d changed. You were already late enough for class and didn’t need the write up. You rushed to your English class.
Everyone turned their attention to the doorway when you opened it. You hurried to your desk, keeping your head down and ignoring as Vicki and Tina laughed. You heard Tina say “She looks like a drowned rat.” But you chose to pretend that you didn’t. You were freezing; Hawkins High turned off the heating system mid-March and left the school to stew in whatever weather the state was dealing with to save the county a few bucks a month.
Steve slid his paper onto your desk, keeping his eye on the front of the room as Mr. Lawrence took up attendance. He’d written on the board in chalk ‘how to peer edit’ in thick block letters. You weren’t exactly enthused by the topic, but you were glad to have the dull class to doodle instead of actually listening. You flipped the paper in front of you, looking over Steve’s chicken scratch without really taking in any of the information. You slid it into your trapper keeper, passing Steve your own typed copy of the assignment. You’d made sure to keep the original at home, edited just in case Steve didn’t give you any edits. You left in some mistakes so he could get a grade, but you didn’t want to have to rely solely on him.
You flipped open your sketchpad slowly, keeping your eye on Tracy Lords curly mess of hair piled high on the top of her head like Medusa’s snakes trapped in a golden laurel, or in this case a braided headband. You pulled your graphite pencil from the pink pencil bag you’d sewn in freshman year home-ec. You started with the shape, trying to capture the exact strangeness pile, making little tight curls in the centre of the oval and spiralling in all directions. You felt a pair of eyes on your neck and you turned to see Steve staring over your shoulder. You pulled yourself and the pad inward, trying not to blush. You didn’t like people looking at your art; you hardly showed your work to anyone, even Samantha. All of your drawings sat in their pads, which piled up as the years went by, untouched and forgotten. If Samantha wasn’t allowed to see the pictures of her, Steve Harrington was certainly not allowed a peak.
“Alright, today if you and your partner are ready to begin, we’ll start editing our papers. If you aren’t ready, that’s fine but today is the only day that we’re doing in class editing so I would spend today trying to finish up so you can at least pass your papers on.” Mr. Lawrence explained. You sighed, closing your pad and pulling Steve’s essay from your trapper keeper.
“Now, we want to look for not only spelling and grammar problems, but also sentences that don’t make sense and confusing details within the essay. It’s not about how many big words you can use, it’s if you can accurately and dynamically give your reader information.” Mr. Lawrence explained. He took to the board, writing key points for his marking, specifically to edit in pen and give a letter grade for the paper.
Tina’s hand shot up “You want us to grade the paper? Isn’t that your job?” she asked, smacking her gum violently. Vicki snickered into her palm, reddish brown hair away from her face.
Mr. Lawrence shook his head “No no, I’m not taking your grade on the papers into consideration for my grade, instead I want us to give each other grades to mark the progress of an essay, to give your partner an idea of what the paper might be worth. It’ll be up to them as to whether or not they are comfortable with the grade or if they want to improve.”
You didn’t like that. Who the hell wanted their classmate grading their paper? This was a recipe for disaster. You uncapped your red pen with your teeth, chewing on the lid nervously. You looked over the page. You had made up your mind that you’d be nice. You’d want Steve to be nice to you. It was the least you could do.
But it only took a few lines to understand that this was not a good paper. Spelling and grammar mistakes galore, run on, confusing sentences, no clear subject. It wasn’t even a good story, hell it wasn’t even an essay it came off more like a point form list. As you added more and more red ink to the black, white, and blue it started as. The paper started to become a Jackson Pollack more than a lame essay for an English class, it almost felt beautiful instead of shitty to destroy his essay. It was as though you were turning into art.
Out of curiosity, you looked over at your paper to see how it was fairing. Steve was, as expected, chatting up Vicki from across the aisle, and he’d made two corrections on your page, both small mistakes you’d left in. You rolled your eyes, a pit of annoyance making itself known in the centre of your stomach, as bitter as the cyanide in a peach pit. You made your last two corrects before scrawling a large ‘D’ at the top of the page and initialling next to it.
You flipped the paper over and pulled back out your sketchpad and brought it close to your chest, pulling your knee up to your chest and adding more curls to the back of Tracy Lords’ head, then focusing in on the braided headband until the bell rang. You flipped your pad closed and slid Steve’s essay back to him, quickly putting your stuff away.
“You mind if I take this home and give it to you tomorrow?” Steve asked, waving your essay in front of your face, nearly giving you a paper cut on the bridge of your nose.
You pushed the paper away, squinting up at him. “Yeah, whatever…” you replied, turning away from. You didn’t feel bad for giving him a bad grade now. He was still a dick head. “Don’t forget your paper.” You added, quickly making your way into the halls. You didn’t usually have the confidence to be snarky with anyone you didn’t trust, but something told you that you could handle Steve Harrington. Maybe it was just how awful his essay was, you felt like you could talk your way out of a fight.
Samantha grabbed your arm as you left the room, the pair of you thankful to have the same lunch period every other day. You hurried into the cafeteria. You knew well enough that she was on the prowl, eyes scanning the room for a certain figure.
“I think the band’s practising today, dude.” You said, taking an extra tray for Samantha and getting her serving of lumpy mashed potatoes and chicken surprise slopped on the plate. Samantha was looking for Robin Buckley, a junior on her soccer team who had drawn her attention as of late, and had been trying to get closer to her as of late, inviting her to join them for lunch every time she saw her and leaving you to third wheel.
“Yeah, probably.” She replied, taking the tray you held out for her and paid for her meal. “So, how’d talking sweet, sexy assignments with King Harrington?” Samantha crooned, batting her eyelashes up at you.
You rolled your eyes “Well, for one, we don’t talk period, and for another it’s fucking awful.” Taking your places at the table closest to the emergency exit, you settled into your routine of trying to choke down the awful cafeteria food. You grabbed your trays and had them filled with whatever horrific concoction the lunch ladies had come up with that day. You carried your grey and brown mushy mess to your table, a small four seater near the edge of the room, out of view from the popular assholes who liked the throw food.
“Oh? Is that what makes it awful? Not getting to enjoy the charming conversations he has to offer?” Samantha was trying hard not to laugh. Watching you squirm was hilarious.
“More like because I have to read his writing…” you replied. You jabbed your fork into what was supposed to be pot roast, but seemed to be ninety percent instant gravy and ten percent meat from an undetermined animal.
“Since when are you such a snob?” Samantha’s mouth was full of mashed potatoes, but the words rang clear.
“Since I spent my morning reading absolute dog shit about a vacation to Miami beach. It was pathetic! I mean, and I’m no critic, but if you’re going to write me an essay on your vacation, can you at least make it interesting?” you ranted. The more you talked about how awful it was the angrier you got about it. You spent so long on art and creating, you spent your time working hard and for someone to slide through life made your blood boil.
Steve didn’t usually spend his free time searching through the cafeteria for people, people usually found him. Tommy and Carol had already motioned him over, their new friend Billy already gone somewhere else, and Vicki and Tina had called for him to join them, but Steve had to handle something first. He didn’t really know what he was looking for, he wasn’t certain he’d find it in there, but there wasn’t any shame in searching. He would ask someone for directions, but it seemed that nobody knew or cared where you were at any time.
You gave him a ‘D’. A god damned ‘D’! He was flummoxed, he thought his essay was shit, he wouldn’t pretend that he didn’t, but he had expected you to be a bit kinder. That was like the unexpected rule of everyone in the class, to grade on the curve. But you went in hard. All he wanted was some answers.
He saw first a flash of pencil stained hands in the air, then the shine of your hair under the florescent lights. You were talking with your hands, making Samantha Cameron laugh hard. He’d never seen you that animated, it made him smile for reasons he didn’t quite understand.
He chuckled, coming up behind you in the hopes that your ease would stick around if he didn’t announce his presence. “You really gave me a D on my paper? What did I do to deserve that?” he asked.
Apparently, you really couldn’t smile when he was around. Both you and Samantha’s smiles dropped, your punky friend dropping her gaze as you were forced to turn around. “Oh…um…well I mean it…maybe I need to look it over again, I was probably being too harsh…” you stuttered, unable to keep yourself from burning up. You prayed that he hadn’t heard what you were saying. That would’ve been awful.
“Hey, it’s cool, the paper’s no good, it’s no big deal.” That was a lie of sorts, when Steve saw the big red ‘D’, his heart dropped. And he really didn’t believe that you were as innocent as you seemed. You seemed guilty over something.
“Well…I’m sorry anyway. I didn’t mean to bother you…” you apologized. You hoped he’d go away; you’d never been more uncomfortable around a person than Steve Harrington. You didn’t know why, but something about him made gave you more butterflies than other people did, he scared you for reasons you couldn’t quite understand.
“You didn’t bother me, don’t worry.” Steve chuckled awkwardly. You wouldn’t look him in the eye, it was throwing him off. “So, listen, I don’t want to fail this class,” he huffed out a sigh, rubbing the back of his neck “Could you maybe help me rewrite this thing?”
You looked to Samantha, unsure if you could even speak words anymore, but she was smirking into her pot roast. Absolutely no help at all. You tried to smile “Um…sure, I can’t promise I’ll be much help though…” your voice was hoarse and unsure of itself. You hated that you’d said yes, but you couldn’t bring yourself to refuse. What if he got mad? Or yelled at you? You couldn’t handle being ridiculed or yelled at, you’d die.
Steve chuckled “Any help I can get is good enough. I can meet you in the library after school, okay?” he said, turning his gaze to Tommy’s hollering from across the cafeteria. He waved him over with both hands, like a sailor on a sinking ship, trying to beckon Steve back to where he belonged. Steve nodded, holding up his index finger, he only needed one minute.
“Sure, yeah that’ll work.” You said, fiddling with a thread hanging from the edge of your grey sweatshirt. You’d painted a little pink flower on the inside of the sleeve. When Steve saw it, he couldn’t help but smile at it; it looked so sweet and earnest.
“Alright, I’ll see you then.” He left after that, heading over to Tommy, who was frustrated beyond belief. He took his seat easily, stealing the pudding cup off of Carol’s tray wordlessly.
“What did that freak want?” Tommy asked loudly, his eyes blown wide. Carol was painting her nails, not even bothering to look up from her work. Tommy made no attempts to hide his dislike of you. He’d expected his best friend since the second grade to feel the same.
“She’s nice, we’re doing an assignment together.” Steve replied with a shrug, pulling the plastic covering off the cup, sticking the plastic spoon into the vanilla pudding.
Across the room, Samantha grabbed onto your hands with a giddy grin. “Look at my little girl! She’s got plans, with a boy!” she squealed, swinging your arms back and forth over the table.
“Jesus, can you please stop acting so straight? You’re gonna scare Robin off.” You yanked your hands away, watching with a grin as she turned her attention back to looking around the room excitedly. You let your eyes find Steve in the cafeteria, the buzz of fear filling your ears. You couldn’t believe that you agreed to meet him anywhere. You wanted to disappear.
You couldn’t focus on anything for the rest of the day. Your mind had gone into a feral sort of panic mode, pumping fear through your veins and turning your palms cold. When the final bell rang, it took all your strength and courage to not run all the way home. You knew that if you didn’t show, the problem wouldn’t go away. You’d just have to deal with the results of ditching the next day, and if not done now, then you’d have to deal with it another day. You clutched your books tight to your chest, sitting on the bench outside the library, trying to keep the butterflies from bursting out of your mouth. Your hands kept coming to your hair, trying to fix it or keep it away from your ears, maybe just to comfort yourself. It had dried weird and you worried that it looked ridiculous.
You saw his shoes come up to yours before you saw his face, royal blue Adidas with white and red details and dirty laces. You noted your own dirty white Converse, marked with mud and lyrics to songs that Samantha wrote on the toes. “Hey, you ready to do this?” Steve asked. You looked up and nodded, swallowing hard.
You wouldn’t make eye contact with him again. It was really starting to freak him out. He didn’t know what he did wrong, but it seemed like you really didn’t like him. Still, you’d agreed to help him and he wouldn’t take that for granted. He’d read your essay twice and it was good. He didn’t know much about good writing, but he knew that Mr. Lawrence would like it, that it would get a good grade. And he wanted decent grades too, so he could get into college and get his dad off his back.
The Hawkins High library was fairly quiet after school, most students headed back home or to after school clubs. Only a few stragglers remained, mostly using electric typewriters and returning books to poor Mrs. Mueller, who always kept the library open till four, waiting for her husband, the head of custodial staff, to finish his work. She smiled at you when you walked in. Mrs. Mueller was a nice woman who let you sit in the library during lunch and always checked in on you when you seemed alone. She was your favourite teacher, despite never having a class taught by her.
Steve chose a table in the dead centre of the room, dropping his blue bag on the wooden chair next to him and pulling out his papers. You carefully followed suite, folding your hands in your lap, unsure what to do with them. Steve smiled at you, sliding the essay towards you “So, what am I doing wrong?” he asked.
You narrowed your eyes, unsure where to begin. You picked up the paper, and then open your notebook, writing down everything the story seemed to be about. Steve watched you, utterly confused. Once you had every down, you set down your pen. “Okay,” you didn’t look up from your paper, sliding the essay to the middle of the table. “Tell me what your paper is about.”
“What? You read it, you should know.” Steve laughed awkwardly.
“Humour me.” You replied, looking up slowly to meet his eye. Steve’s smiled dropped, looking at you for a second. You broke eye contact first, but he wished he had been able to hold it for a moment longer.
“Okay, well,” he took a deep breath “I wrote about my family’s trip to our cottage on Miami Beach, and I talked about what I did. Nothing much.”
“Okay, because what you actually wrote isn’t really about that. What you told me is that you went to Miami Beach, your parents own a dirty beach house that was your grandparent’s house and that they’re both dead, that your grandfather fought in World War Two and that the medals were framed in the house, that you met a girl on the beach but she didn’t like you, and that the flight was long.” You explained. You still couldn’t believe that he’d fit all of that into a page of work.
“So?” Steve asked. That was all true of his last trip. Mind you, that was way back in middle school and the details were hazy.
“So, that’s a lot of information that I don’t care about. You can cut all of the stuff about your grandparents, which takes up like half of it. And when you cut that, all I know is that the beach house is in Miami Beach and you met a girl and the flight was long. That’s not bad, but I’d like to know a bit more about it.” You said, taking back the essay from the middle of the page and crossed out every line about his grandparents.
“What do I say instead then?” Steve asked, watching as you crossed out half his page, trying not to sound defeated. You were basically saying that he had to start all over again.
“Well, tell me about the beach? Pretend like I’ve never been. What’s there to do, what’d you like about it?” you shrugged. You found yourself feeling a tad bit calmer; the butterflies had calmed their intense flapping and had let you breathe.
Steve sighed “I don’t know, I’m just bullshitting.”
“What’d you mean?” you asked.
“I mean, I didn’t go on there, I haven’t been to our beach house since I was a kid.” Steve looked away. He was embarrassed to have been caught in a lie, even more knowing that now he’d have to rewrite his whole paper.
“Oh…what’d you actually do on your break?” you hadn’t expected him to be lying about anything, a snow bird spring break trip sounded about right for his family, they were always bragging about their money.
Steve chuckled “Oh no, nothing worth writing an essay on.” You looked up at him again. He seemed a bit sad. You pulled another sheet of paper from your trapper keeper, setting it overtop the last one.
“Tell me about it.” You smiled at him despite yourself. He was bit easier to talk to than you’d imagined.
Steve swallowed, nodding despite himself. “Well, I mean my parents went to the beach house and I tried to throw a party, you probably heard about how that went.” He rubbed at the back of his neck.
“No…” you shook your head. Steve wasn’t expecting that. Everyone had heard about the failed party, he’d gotten shit about it for weeks.
“Well, I couldn’t get any supplies, so I cancelled and hung out with Tommy and Carol instead. We got drunk in my backyard and Carol fell in the pool. She was so pissed. Then, I pretty much just hung about town, helped my buddy Dustin beat Dragon’s Lair at the arcade.” Steve didn’t really like admitting how lame his life was, he purposefully left out how Tommy and Carol only hung out with him when he went to pick up some weed from his older brother and they wanted a hit off it. Admitting that his life wasn’t that great made him feel small and like it was out of his control, which was not exactly a good feeling.
“Okay, tell me about the little party you had with Tommy and Carol. What was the night like? Was it fun? Did you jump in the pool too or did you watch her fall and laugh?” You had written down the few details in a bubble tree and added more details as he explained his time more thoroughly. You managed to get a bit more information on both events, learning more about his friend Dustin and the game they played.
When he was finished, you slid the page over to him. He took it, eyebrow raised in confusion, but you spoke before he could ask any questions. “This is your blue print. I wrote down everything you told me; now just turn it into an essay. The whole trick about these assignments is that you’re telling a story, and to make it interesting you have to give us details, and not about your grandparents or other things that don’t add to the story at hand, about what actually was happening.” You explained, checking the plastic watch on your wrist. It was almost four and Mrs. Mueller had already passed your table twice, her silent warning to leave. Everyone else who had been there had long left and you became very aware of how alone you were with him. The butterflies started their flapping again, churning tides in your stomach.
Steve smiled “Okay, I promise it’ll be interesting though.” He chuckled.
You shrugged “I promise that it’s more interesting than what you had before.” You shoved your papers into your bag, standing quickly “If you want me to look at it again before you hand it in, just bring it to me in class, alright? The library’s closing so I should go.”
“You want a ride home?” you spun around to look at him, crossing your arms over your paint splattered sweatshirt. The rain storm of the morning was long forgotten and you didn’t know what the weather looked like now. A part of you wanted to take the ride, but a much bigger part of you told you to run away.
You shook your head “No, um my friend Samantha said she’d drive me after her soccer practise, she’s probably waiting for me.” You lied straight through your teeth, adjusting your backpack straps on your shoulders.
“Oh…sure, yeah, I’ll see you around.” Steve stood slowly, tucking in his chair. You waved politely and headed out. The rain had stopped, thank god, and you rushed to your locker, grabbing your wet clothes from your locker before making your way outside. The field was muddy, practise was probably cancelled. You took the long way home that afternoon, cutting through the woods and the muddy park to avoid being spotted by Harrington on the way and getting caught in a lie.
The afternoon had gone well. And that scared the shit out of you.
A/N: I’m so sorry for the later update.. I went on a vacation to Nashville (more like just helping my sister move in but I call it vacation).. I’m going to be a lot more busy next few months so updates will be not super often.
Anyways, a lot of this chapter is my own weird humor and poking fun at my own writing.. Reader is starting to sound like me when I’m at work or anyone bothers me while I’m at home lol.
Another mini update.. the main plot points of the story are pretty much already plotted. Ending is all set.. just how do I get there 🤔 I guess I’ll figure it out as I go.
Comments/likes/reblogs are super appreciated!
•••
You woke up early for work as usual, the sun would rise in a few hours. Not many jobs required such early hours — most starting as the sun rose but the bar needed extra hands before they opened. It was a much better pace for you, quick, a reminder to put on your strong face through the day and pretend everything was fine.
You had made yourself a nice breakfast, realizing your increased appetite throughout the past few months wasn’t because you were eating your sorrows away. It was better to remind yourself you were eating for two now anyways.
How long would it be before you really started showing? Who would notice first? You were already barely beginning to show.. if someone looked awfully close they could see that. You opted for a baggier shirt when you chose your outfit for the day. There was a sense of dread as you thought about having to tell your close friends, though Maria was the first to know, you doubted everyone else’s reaction would go as smoothly. It was foolish to think Maria would be anything less than supportive.
You thought about how you would have told Mark if he had been still alive. You wondered how he would react.. how Joel would react. How it would only put further strain on both of those relationships.
But how would Joel react now? You wanted to play it safely, while you didn’t regret telling Maria, you needed to be more careful. You had enough to explain to Joel as is, you didn’t want to tell him of your secret just yet.
Joel was angry with you, yet he had accepted an invite to the lake (even though he did owe you a trip back), it was progress. You would have to play it smart, let him know at the right time.
It was easier to warm up to the idea of having a baby after talking to Maria, it was reassuring. Perhaps it wouldn’t too difficult, especially while living in Jackson. And if you did decide you didn’t want to keep the baby, you were certain there were families willing to take the child in.
You managed to make it out of the door quickly, there was no twinge of nausea as you walked to the bar, that was welcoming. Exhaustion pulled at you, staying up to find Ellie had certainly taken a toll on you. You usually worked morning shifts, which meant you could leave and have the rest of the day for yourself.
Joel was probably getting ready to go out for patrol now, depending on what route he had. Ellie was probably sulking in her room — or asleep waiting for Maria to come knocking again. The teenagers who snuck out would definitely be talk of the town, especially if a group that large headed into the Courthouse.
Jackson was quiet, as it had been earlier in the night. Few lights were on, it was always particularly quiet this time in the morning. The autumn air was cool and refreshing, Halloween was creeping around the corner, so was the Autumn festival. Mark preferred the Autumn Festival over Halloween, it was a place holder for the broken arm incidents.
You wished he was here for it. Seasonal dances were always his favorite. He would pull you onto the dance floor after he begged the DJ to play Bill Withers. You missed his laughter, though it was being blurred as time went by.. you couldn’t exactly remember how his laugh sounded, or where the scar on his face started on his nose. It was haunting, forgetting Mark was like forgetting a part of yourself.
Mark was gone. That life you had with him was gone. There was a shell of a room in your house, his child growing inside of you, dog tags around your neck and a world turned upside down. Mark’s death was not something quiet in your life, and yet few people knew of it.
You remembered every second of his death, the running for your life, hiding and hoping it was enough. Watching him, silently from your hidden spot. The blood on the floor. The sound of a gunshot. It was something unforgettable, a memory forever ingrained into your mind in splitting detail. Sometimes the faint smell of copper would appear in your mind and it would make your head woozy. The nightmares rarely let up.
Mark would touch your life forever.. even beyond the grave he had left something behind. You weren’t sure whether to thank him or curse.
•••
Ellie figured she could sleep before hell broke loose. There was no point in staying up all night. She dreaded the morning, listening to Joel yell at her along with Maria, having to take the walk of shame into the Courthouse with the other teens, dealing with Cat and Dina. It was a pure mess.
Maria knocked on her door before sunrise, waking her up. Ellie groaned quietly and pulled herself out of bed, flicking the light on as the early morning light fell through her window. Her head was aching from last night’s adventure.
She opened the door for Maria, Maria didn’t wait for an invitation to enter, she walked in.
“Punishment has changed, you’re only getting the same punishment as the rest of the teenagers. Seems like you owe Y/N a favor,” Maria told Ellie.
Ellie’s brow furrowed in confusion before she realized.
“Y/N asked me to go easier on you, so I did,” She explained non chalantly.
“Wow, well thank you,” Ellie said, surprised, she was relieved.
“You should thank Y/N.”
“I will,” Ellie nodded. It was silent for a few seconds.
“Look, I’m sorry about last night. I was upset and drunk,” She apologized.
“I know. It still wasn’t right for you to go outside the wall, you know the rules,” Maria said softly to the girl. It was going smoother than Ellie had expected.
“I just.. wanted to get away from everything for a night,” Ellie said to Maria. Maria wasn’t surprised.
“I understand. It still wasn’t the best course of action though,” Maria said thoughtfully, though she was disappointed.
“Yeah, I know,” Ellie replied, shame hinting in her voice.
“Joel’s already up, he has a shorter route today so he didn’t have to get up so early,” Maria explained to her. Ellie could feel the dread grow in her as she glanced out the window, the lights were on inside. She barely went over to his house these days, barely even said much to him, avoiding Joel as much as she could. She had things to figure out, Joel being around her would only confuse things further. It hurt having such a strain with someone she looked up to, but Joel was keeping the truth from her.
“Come on,” Maria said, motioning for Ellie to follow her as she exited Ellie’s room. There was frost on the grass, and a chill swept through the morning air.
Maria knocked on Joel’s back porch, Joel’s footsteps were loud enough to be heard from the other side of the door. Joel opened the door, looking confused to see both Maria and Ellie standing outside.
“Maria?” He asked, glancing over to Ellie as well, his brow raised.
“Can we come in?” Maria replied. Ellie stood to the side, praying this would be over quickly. Joel opened the door for them, they entered into his kitchen. Joel’s house felt foreign to be in, like entering a stranger's home, as if she was intruding. And yet it still felt familiar — like it was a hidden memory locked away from years of repressed thoughts, barely recognizable.
Joel leaned against the kitchen counter, waiting for Maria. Ellie averted her gaze to the floor as Maria began.
“Ellie snuck out last night with a group of teenagers,” Maria told Joel.
Joel’s face was unreadable until he spoke, looking over to Ellie. “What?” He said, his voice bubbling with disbelief and harshness.
“She snuck out. Got drunk too,” Maria explained, both of them staring at the teenager.
“Have you any idea what is out there? Have you forgotten what it’s like?” Joel scolded, anger and disappointment lacing his words. Ellie flinched at his voice.
“Am I not allowed to have fun anymore?” Ellie scoffed back with defiance, throwing her hands up in the air in protest.
“What you did was reckless and stupid, you know the risks,” Joel said, his face contorted in anger.
“Like there’s even any infected near town.” Ellie rolled her eyes.
“Ellie,” Maria replied firmly, shooting her a look.
“There are a thousand things that could have gone wrong. You shouldn’t have gone out there.” Joel was disappointed in Ellie.
“People do it all the time, why am I getting flamed for it now, huh?”
“Because you got caught,” Maria said.
“You only care when it has something to do with me. Y/N and Dina snuck out and you didn’t give two shits about them!” Ellie felt her head growing hot, her words fueled by anger.
Joel was surprised to hear that you had gone, a sense of worry flooding through him, why had you gone out as well?
“Y/N and Dina were looking for you,” Maria reminded her.
Ellie was silent, the tension was thick in the kitchen and Joel was burning holes in her head with his eyes.
“She’s getting the same punishment the rest of the party goers are getting, they’re going to the courthouse when the sun rises,” Maria explained to Joel.
“Take her off patrol for a month since she’s gotten too comfortable with being outside,” Joel said coldly.
“Sure,” Maria said. She was fine with that punishment.
Ellie’s mouth was agape. “That’s bullshit! You said you weren’t taking me off patrol!” She shouted to Maria.
“I said I wasn’t anymore. I’m leaving the rest to Joel.”
“It’s final, Ellie. You made a stupid mistake and now you have to pay the price for it,” Joel said. There was no debate, but Ellie would put up a protest.
“That’s such bullshit,” Ellie scoffed, storming out of Joel’s house, slamming the door behind her. Joel stood in the kitchen, feeling the rift pull them further and further away.
“I’ll go get her,” Maria grumbled, becoming increasingly annoyed at Ellie.
“No, let her go,” Joel sighed, feeling a tension headache coming on.
“I don’t know what’s been getting into her lately,” Maria replied, leaning her back on the counter next to Joel.
Joel grunted softly, “I’m trying, I am.”
“I know Joel, I think whatever is going on with Ellie she needs to figure it out herself.”
•••
The morning rush was annoying as ever. You were barely able to sit or even have a moment of rest, it seemed another customer walked through the door each time you even leaned against the back counter. But it was nice, busy work, it kept your mind off things and it was a constant reminder of how to socialize with people. It kept your mind off the horde coming to town, the baby, Joel, Ellie, practically everyone.
As the sun rose mid way through your shift, you saw the crowd of teenagers meet outside the Courthouse. You spotted Ellie and Cat, on opposite sides of the crowd. The people in the bar noticed too, perking up as they saw Maria and the rest of the Council members show up. Some people cracked jokes, some people muttered to each other, but as they went into the building the chatter died down. You wondered what the punishment was going to be. At least you managed to get Ellie no sentence from Maria, you also wondered how Joel handled things.
Joel was probably out on patrol by now, Tommy wasn’t with him, you wondered who he had gone out on patrol with then. You were almost always assigned with Mark — occasionally Joel. But usually Mark. The head of patrol usually kept you two together considering you were roommates, wanting to keep the same schedule.
A large group came into the bar and you groaned inwardly, cursing yourself and your job. Dina and Jesse were a part of the group. The crowd dispersed and went to their own tables, Dina making a beeline towards you
“Hey,” She smiled at you, sitting down at the bar. It wasn’t uncommon for Dina to stop by.
“How’s it going? Group patrol today?” You asked, wiping down the bar.
She nodded, “Yeah, we came in for breakfast before we went out. We have a long route today so Jesse wanted to make sure we all ate.”
“How are things between you and him?” Dina had mentioned they were having some issues last night.
“I haven’t really talked to him about us. He knows about Ellie, he’s pissed at her for not inviting him but he thinks it’s funny she got caught,” She rolled her eyes. You were glad someone here was making advancements in their relationships instead of hitting a brick wall — or multiple.
“Ellie’s at the Courthouse right now, I saw her with the crowd that went inside.”
“Yeah.. hopefully I’ll be able to catch her later tonight, try to smooth things over.”
“Good idea. Who else is patrolling today?”
“Joel, I know is, not sure who else I’ll have to look at the gate logbooks. You know you should really think about coming back to patrol, I miss seeing your’s and Mark’s messages next to the logbooks,” Dina replied, she wasn’t attempting to persuade you like Maria was.
“You know I was convinced no one ever read the Adventures of a Town Crackson, Mark isn't convinced though,” You laughed, remembering his silly stories and messages he would leave for others to find. The piles of sticky notes he left next to logbooks told a story, the story went that he would make mini comics out of old sticky notes and leave them around lookouts for people to read, you would have to visit them all in a certain order to understand. The Adventures of a Town Crackson was a parody of Jackson, except the main character, Lame Lane was a superhero on a revenge quest to kill the evil mastermind Mister Jacobsonithia, who had wronged him years before by killing those close to Lame Lane. It was both a bizarre and funny story.
“Oh no, that story is practically famous! Mark left us on a cliffhanger at Volume.. what was it.. 13th? The one where Lame Lane breaks into Jacobsinthia’s fortress and finds him! Right when Lame finally faces the bastard!” Dina excitedly rambled. Mark would have loved to talk about his story with Dina, you were glad at least someone had read what he called his masterpiece.
You simply stood and smiled bittersweetly, listening to Dina talk about Mark’s story.
“You really have to convince Mark to come back to patrol, I want to read the end of the story!” She said finally as you put her meal in front of her.
You shrugged, “I don’t know if he’s thought of an ending yet.”
•••
Later in the day, someone knocked on your door. You had been getting so many visitors lately.. you wondered who was there and what the hell they wanted. You had ate more of the cookies Maria brought over last night, they were good. You wanted something salty or sour to balance out the sweetness, like pretzels or pickles. Maybe both. You were mid way through your second cookie when someone knocked.
You got up quickly, grumbling the entire time underneath your breath. You were damn tired of leaving your town, socializing, looking for a teenager and having to take orders all day. You just wanted to eat cookies and collapse in bed.
Ellie was at the door surprinsgly.
“Ellie, hey,” You said, opening the door to let her in, closing the door as she entered.
“Hey.”
“What brings you here?” You asked, wondering why Ellie had suddenly shown up at your door.
“I just wanted to say thanks for having my back and letting Maria drop my punishment,” She said sincerely, even though her words seemed hard to get out.
“Of course, it’s the least I can do,” You replied.
“Joel still took me off patrol for a month,” Ellie rolled her eyes at the thought.
“He can do that?”
“Maria let him,” She said, sucking in a breath.
“I’m sorry, that sucks,” You told her.
She rocked on her feet, swaying gently back and forth. “Yeah,” She mumbled.
“Have you talked to Cat or Dina?”
She perked up at your question, “Cat’s still pissed at me and Dina’s out on patrol today so no.”
“How did Joel handle things?”
Ellie shrugged, not wanting to discuss the topic.
“Okay by the way, how was the Courthouse?” You changed the subject. The Courthouse was never fun.. it was where the Town Council did all of the planning for Jackson, assignments and occasionally hearings/punishments.
“Council put us all on clean up duty for the festival and nine pm curfew for the next two months,” She sighed.
“What assignment are you going to take in the meantime?”
“I don’t know, maybe trading post,” She said unthrillingly. There weren’t many open assignments that were anything but a bore. At least people at the trading post got to talk with others from outside of Jackson, though you weren’t sure it was Ellie’s style. You could see her on wall duty, though there were rarely open spots. Ellie likes kids, but you weren’t sure she could handle screaming toddlers for days on end, the daycare was a no go.
“How about the farms or gardening?”
“Do I look like a gardener to you?” She joked.
You shook your head humorously, “No, but I could see you in overalls and maybe a big farmers hat.”
“Fair enough,” She smirked.
“Oh, since you’re here did you want to get the Walkman tapes and the records?” You remembered promising her Mark’s old collection.. though you were sure you wouldn’t be able to give away his favorites, it would be far too cruel.
“Yeah sure, is Mark here right now?” She asked, glancing past you to the hallway.
“Oh, uh no, he’s not but he won’t mind, trust me,” You replied. Lying about Mark’s whereabouts was something you were getting good at. Of course, you knew exactly where he was and where he would be for all of eternity.
Ellie nodded, excited to hear some more tapes.
“I’ll go get them from his room, I’ll be right back.”
Walking back to his room, twice in less than twenty four hours.. it was insane. You weren’t even sure you could ever go into that room again and here you were, walking back up those same steps to his loft, feeling his dog tags jingle with every step, twisting the doorknob open and being inside of his room.
The room that felt lifeless. It felt wrong to take anything from out of his room.. like it was a scene forever stuck in a piece of history and you were disrupting it. But his things would have to go eventually, Ellie would appreciate his records. You were sure she would.
And yet a thought struck you.. would your child want something to remember their father by? Was giving away his records the best course of action? For months you wanted to get rid of everything that reminded you of him.. and yet you wanted to keep things. To have something to remember him by. The Walkman tapes would go untouched for years.. and you would only keep Mark’s favorite records — you were sure Ellie wouldn’t take too many of them regardless.
Bill Withers, Motley Crüe, Green Day and Queen records were all off limits. Mark would come back from the dead and knock some sense into you if you gave away any of those.
But there were others you were sure Ellie would appreciate.. Pearl Jam, The Sleek Habit.. or whatever the hell it was called. It was Mark’s favorite thing to collect — records, it seemed like he could listen to one album a day and still not have listened to them all by the time he turned eighty. At least he kept them ordered by genre, it made your life easier to pick out a few boxes. The boxes of records under his bed, in his closet, next to his dresser. You found his Walkman tapes in a small drawer on his bedside table, he didn’t have quite as many.
You decided on bringing Ellie, punk rock, folk music and alternative. Plus Mark’s entire collection of tapes.
Somehow, you managed to bring them all down to her. Her eyes lit up at the sight of them, you set the boxes down on the kitchen table.
“Take as many as you want, just let me see them first, otherwise Mark might get mad I’ve given away his favorites,” You said to her as she began flicking through the boxes.
She picked out a few she liked, luckily they weren’t all that memorable to Mark, or at least what you had remembered, you weren’t sure you had the heart to tell her to put any of his favorites away though if she had managed to pick out one of his favorites.
“Find the ones you were looking for?” You asked her as she picked all the records and tapes up.
“Yeah, Mark’s got a big collection, I even found Shawn James and Crooked Still,” She smiled, the sparkle returning to her face. You were glad Mark’s love of music had made her happy, he could pass on gifts even beyond the grave.
“I’m glad you like it.”
“Tell Mark I say thanks. I’m really sorry, I have to bounce, I think Dina might be home by now, seriously though, thanks again for getting me off the hook,” She said to you, her sincerity apparent. There was still uneasiness between you and her.. as there was with almost everyone, and yet things were starting to look brighter and brighter.
You nodded, bidding her farewell for the rest of the day, a pang of remembrance hitting your heart, as if things were slowly and yet surely returning to what normal felt like months ago. Even if a large part of your life was missing from it.. things were starting to look up. It felt almost wrong to be happy after months of grief and isolation, you felt guilty for allowing yourself to step back into the light, but you were happy things were starting to look better. Mark would have liked you to be happy, that was certain.
•••
Another knock on the door, another interrupted hour. The sun had set by then, you were done with dinner and were watching a movie you had found. You had a nice candle flickering too, the people of Jackson were awfully crafty, it was one of the few commodities that you regularly sought out, Mark had his candy and records, you had candles. Your house was starting to feel more lively again.
You opened the door to see Joel standing on the other side. You were definitely surprised to see him.
“Joel,”
“Hello, can I come in?” He asked.
“Sure,” You said, opening the door for him. Your porch light illuminated the dead flowers hanging from the roof.. you had been meaning to take those downs.
“Don’t worry, Mark’s not here,” You said to him as he entered.
Joel nodded as he glanced around your house. Not much had changed since the last time he had been there.
“Been awhile huh?” You asked.
“Yep. Been some time.”
“Any reason you decided to stop by?” You asked.
“I wanted to thank you for looking out for Ellie,” Joel began.
“Of course. I would have gotten you if we wouldn’t have found her, I just didn’t want to wake you up,” You explained.
“Yeah, I get that. I’m glad you’re looking out for her though.. I know you don’t like being outside Jackson anymore.”
“I didn’t want anything to happen to Ellie,” You shrugged.
“She’s not happy with what I told her. Not that I’m surprised though. I’m disappointed in her, I thought she knew better.”
“She’s a teenager, Joel. Teenagers are allowed to make mistakes,” You said.
“She still needs to be reminded of what’s out there.”
“Not arguing with you on that,” You replied softly.
It was silent for a few moments, “So.. about our trip to the lake,” He began again.
Your eyes lit up at the thought, “Oh! Yeah, right, I shoot the infected, you take me to the lake, that’s how it went, or maybe you still owe me a trip back,” You reminded him.
“I do still owe you,” He smiled.
That day.. so much had happened in such a small period of time, everything felt like a blur.
“You do. But I was thinking we could skip the lake and maybe.. you would want to come with me to the Halloween party?” You asked, almost shyly.
Joel smiled as he scratched his beard, “Are you asking me on a date?”
“Maybe?” You blushed lightly.
“It’s a yes or no question, Y/N,” He teased.
“Yes. It’s a yes, I’m asking you on a date.” Three months of no contact and here you were asking Joel on a date.. you weren’t sure if you wanted to laugh or cry. Damn you, hormonal imbalances.
“Then yes, I’ll take you to the party.” He nodded.
“A date it is then,” You said happily.
“Are you sure you’re not sick anymore though?” He asked playfully.
“I'm not , maybe it was just something I ate that day,” You shrugged, lying through your teeth. You knew what came over you, and you weren’t sure how exactly that would ever come up in conversation with Joel.. how would he even react to that? The longer you waited.. the harder it would be.
“I’m glad you’re feeling better.”
“Me too. Hopefully it wasn’t Tommy’s stew.”
“At least it wasn’t mine.”
Joel left shortly after that, you were still smiling as he left. There were still questions, and there were answers you needed to give, but at least it wasn’t as rocky as it had been a few days ago. Maybe it was easy to heal.. or maybe the circumstances were making it easier. Or maybe it was just time to start living your life again, a new life that mirrored your last, but in an entirely new way.
It was a fresh start. You put your hand on your small bump, barely noticeable as you sat down on the couch. Your knees weak and your smile wide. Maybe it was time.
Part Two : Stained Glass
// Selfish // Highly requested by those tagged below and 4 anons//
Pairing: Peter Parker x Stark!Reader
Word Count: 6,110
Summary: Y/N Y/L/N has revealed herself to be Y/N Stark. But in an effort to get Y/N to reveal her alter ego, Heretic, Peter exposes himself as Spiderman. Knowing her hatred of heroes, can Y/N and Peter mend their relationship? Can Y/N bond with her dad, Tony? Will the Stained Glass of their relationship lead to something beautiful or a tragedy?
Despite everything you were feeling, the pain and the mistrust, you put on a happy face for your mom and at school. You didn’t tell her how the conversation ended with Tony and Peter the week before. When you came out of your room with red, puffy eyes, you told her that it was because you weren’t sure what was the right thing to do. You told her that you felt lost, that you wanted to look within yourself and trust your heart. But your heart was too busy fighting itself to be of any help to your head.
After the shocking discovery of Peter’s alter ego, you hung up your mask and all of your Heretic activities. You flushed your serums down the toilet, dismantled your vocal manipulator, and crushed the neurotransmitter on the knives. You threw the soundproof boots in the back of your closet and shoved the suit deep under your bed. The only thing you kept within reach was the knives themselves, just in case something dangerous happened in your apartment. It was highly unlikely but you wanted to be prepared.
At school, you pretended as if nothing happened. You were able to lift your slightly slipping grades since you had time to actually study the topics outside of class. You laughed more, joked more. Things weren’t as heavy as they were when you started Heretic. But one thing that couldn’t go back to normal was your relationship with Peter.
“Y/N, are you coming to my party this weekend?” Liz asked after decathlon. “I think Peter said he was gonna go.”
“I think I have to spend this weekend with my dad.” You sighed. “I have to check with my mom if it’s this weekend or next. But if I’m free, I will definitely be there!”
“Yay!” She smiled, hugging you quickly before striding away with her friends. MJ soon replaced Liz in front of you.
“You’re being weird.” She said simply.
“Things have been weird lately.” You shrugged, blowing out a long sigh. “With my dad being back and-”
“That’s not what I’m talking about.” She cut in.
“What’s the issue then?”
“You and Peter…” She tried as if it was obvious.
“We had a fight.” You laughed dismissively. “I was freaked about my dad and I took it out on him. We’re good though. We talked about it and everything is fine.”
“You’re a horrible liar.”
“MJ, everything is fine. Stop worrying.”
She huffed in annoyance, figuring the conversation wouldn’t go anywhere. She shook her head in disappointment, having to refrain from rolling her eyes. She knew you were lying. She was surprised no one else had picked up on it. It was obvious that something had changed between you and Peter, but MJ decided she wasn’t going to bring it up again.
Nights seemed longer when you stayed in the house. You had sworn off Heretic, knowing that falling back into it wouldn’t be good for you. You woke often in the middle of the night, unable to fall back asleep for hours after that. You would climb onto your fire escape, curled in a blanket and wondering if you’d see Peter swing by. Some nights you would even fall asleep on the fire escape, waking up only when the sun was shining in your eyes.
You had stopped answering Peter’s texts and calls for the time being. You tried to convince yourself that it was nothing personal against Peter. It was simply your anger at Spiderman. But in that argument, you always circled back to the fact that Peter was Spiderman.
lover boy🥵❤️: did you do the physics work?😷
-
lover boy🥵❤️: ice cream after school? my treat :)
-
lover boy🥵❤️: little old lady bought me a churro today. lover boy🥵❤️: she was nice :)
-
peter🥵❤️: please call me
-
peter: y/n? spiderman: is this cuz 🕷🕷 parker: ????? parker: :( parker🕷: is this your way of breaking up w me??? please say it isn’t :(
You tried simply ignoring his messages, but seeing his name popping up only made it harder to resist. You had resorted to changing his name in your contacts, from lover boy to peter to spiderman. You had finally landed on parker, deciding that would remind you that you were upset with him.
You had also been receiving messages from your dad. You ignored those too, but soon your mom started to get involved.
tony🙄: Cap’s coming back from a mission today. You and your mom want to come meet him?
tony🙄: How does LA sound for this weekend? You can bring your mom too
tony🙄: You can’t ignore me or Peter forever, kid.
You were sitting with your friends at lunch at your usual table. Ned and Betty sat opposite of you, MJ, and Peter. You were beside Peter, your head leaning on his shoulder and your hands intertwined under the table. You knew it would only confuse Peter to act one way in public and a different way when you were by yourself. You knew it was wrong and unfair, but your heart still yearned for him. At school, you only knew him as Peter, so it was easy to forget it all.
Peter was in a bind. You ignored him outside of school, but you would act as if nothing happened when the bell rang. You’d act as if everything was fine. You held his hand, hugged him, kissed him and talked to him as if everything was normal. Peter wasn’t stupid. He knew it was only an act in public, a way to avoid explaining the situation to your friends.
Peter wanted to be okay with it. He wanted to be able to sleep at night knowing it was for his own good. It kept both of your secrets after all.
But it still felt wrong. Deep down it hurt to know that you were only showing him the affection he had grown used to as an act. He knew you were hurting, processing an insanely unlikely scenario. He knew it shook you to your core to know the boy you were in love with had a secret life that had intertwined with yours. And not in a positive way.
He knew it was hard to accept that the boy you loved was a hero, working with the father you didn’t claim. The father you didn’t care to know. But after all, despite everything, Peter didn’t have it in him to resist. He enjoyed your touch, your voice. Even if it was an elaborate ruse, he just enjoyed your company.
“You two are so cute!” Betty commented from her place beside Ned. “I swear you two are always so happy.”
“Who wouldn’t be happy with Peter?” You smiled, glancing up at him.
“Yeah, well.” He smiled with a playful shrug. “Guess I’m just lucky to have her.”
“You’re damn right you’re lucky.” Flash commented, plopping himself down beside you. “How does Y/N Y/L/N get stuck with you?”
“Why must you interrupt my lunch?” You sighed, lifting your head from Peter’s shoulder to glare at your classmate.
“All I’m saying is that you could do better than Penis Parker.” Flash defended, his hands up in mock surrender.
“Don’t you have Spiderman fanfiction to write?” MJ asked plainly, leaning around Peter to see Flash’s reaction.
“I don’t write fanfiction!” He argued quickly, and too loud for the quiet cafeteria.
You bit back your laughter as the boy stomped away. He moved to smack the back of Peter’s neck, but you put your hand in the way. Flash ended up smacking the back of your hand, but you decided to make a scene, if only to prove a point and embarrass the bully even further.
“What the hell, Flash?” You announced, putting your hand behind your neck to make it more convincing.
“Oh my god!” He exclaimed in a panic. “I meant to hit Parker. I am so sorry!”
“You just smacked my fucking neck!” You stood from your place beside Peter, glaring at the panicked boy in front of you. “Are you serious?”
“Why did you hit her?” Betty joined in.
“Not cool, dude!” Ned egged the situation on, shaking his head in disapproval.
“I was trying to hit Parker!” Flash defended.
“That doesn’t make it any better!” You shouted. You could hear the mumbles throughout the cafeteria, some wondering if you would hit Flash back or if you were going to chew him out in front of everyone. Both options were tempting, but you didn’t know what you were really going for. “You can’t walk around campus hitting people!”
“I would run if I was you.” MJ told Flash, giving him a thumbs up that quickly turned to the middle finger.
“Y/N, I am so sorry.” He reached out his hands, as if to take you in an embrace.
Without thinking, you knocked one hand away before twisting the other one outwards. You kicked out a knee and pinned his arm behind his back. You took his backpack and flipped it over his head so it was on his chest. You pushed him forward before crossing your arms over your chest.
“I told you to run.” MJ said with a shrug. The rest of the cafeteria burst out in applause, hoots and hollers of approval once Flash hit the ground. He fumbled to get back on his feet, momentarily stuck in his backpack. You were backing away to retake your seat beside Peter, biting your lower lip to keep back your laughter.
“Y/L/N!” You heard Mr. Dell yell at you before you could get back to your seat. You sighed before grabbing your backpack. You pressed a quick kiss to Peter’s cheek without thinking and followed Mr. Dell down the hall.
The small kiss only confused Peter more. You didn’t have to do that. Everything seemed normal that day. Your friends were unsuspecting of any tension between you two. He watched you go, a longing look in his eyes. He sighed to himself, wondering how he could fix things between you two.
“You okay, Peter?” Betty asked softly, drawing her friends attention back to the group.
“What?” Peter said quickly, his head snapping back. “Yeah, yeah I’m good. Just a little… shocked.”
“Yeah, I didn’t know Y/N had that in her.” Ned gushed. “Where did she learn to do that?”
“She’s been taking self defense classes.” MJ shrugged.
“She has?” Peter brows furrowed, but then he realized she probably took them so she could fight back as Heretic.
“You seriously didn’t know?” She chuckled hesitantly. It wasn’t like Y/N to have kept that a secret from Peter.
“She does self defense and softball? And she has great grades here?” Betty gaped, her eyes wide as she thought about it. “Wow. Her college applications are going to look amazing.”
You sat in the principal’s office, slouched in the stiff chair. You let your head hang over the back, waiting for the principal to return from the secretary’s office. He went to find your file so he could get your mother’s number, even though you offered to give him her work number.
“Your mother isn’t able to come get you.” Principal Morita announced when he entered his office again.
“I told you that she was busy at work.” You shrugged. “I guess it’s detention then?”
“No, she gave me the number of your father. He’s coming to get you.”
“You did not call my dad.” You groaned, covering your face with both hands.
“You gave me no choice, Y/N. Laying hands on another student-”
“He hit me first!” You defended quickly.
“Regardless, you were the one who escala-”
“I escalated it?” You snapped. You weren’t necessarily mad at the situation. You were annoyed that you were getting in trouble but Flash wasn’t, but not enough for you to yell at your principal. “Flash has been bullying Peter since middle school but no one on this godforsaken campus does anything about it. Why? Cause his dad funds some of the programs? That’s not fair.”
“Y/N, please calm down.”
“No, I will not calm down.” You continued, quickly getting to your feet. “I am not the only one who was involved in that fight. Flash started it and I finished it. But if I am the only one getting in trouble then there is something seriously wrong with this disciplinary system. Not to mention, that by punishing the female student that was involved in a physical altercation with a male student could potentially send the wrong message about the values of the school.”
“I assure you, Y/N, that we take any sort of assault on students very seriously.”
“Then why aren’t you calling Flash in?” You challenged plainly. “Call in Flash Thompson and I will stop arguing.”
“Holy cow.” Morita said in soft amazement as his attention shifted from your heated words to the door. “Mr. Stark, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I- I didn’t know that you were Y/N’s father.”
You groaned in embarrassment, the fuel to your rant now gone. You slumped into the chair, pulling your backpack into your lap and using it to hide behind. You peaked up from behind it, only to find Tony looking at you expectantly. You were mildly surprised that he actually showed up, but even more shocked when he didn’t seem angry about it.
“Fill me in.” He nodded, pointing between you and your principal. “What happened?”
“The kid that always bullies Peter went to smack him but smacked me instead. I pushed him to the ground - and embarrassed him in front of everyone - but there’s only one kid in this office.” You muttered from behind your backpack. “And it’s not even the kid that started it, might I add.”
“Two kids were involved. Why is she the only one here?” Tony asked, pointing at you.
“Well, I- One of our faculty only saw-”
“Only saw my kid?” Tony questioned. You felt an odd pride in your chest when he called you his kid, but you buried it quickly. You were still supposed to be upset with him and Peter, but you didn’t know if you were upset anymore. You couldn’t quite name what you were feeling and you hated it. “Hmm. So, what? Suspension? She has to write ‘I will not push people’ a hundred times?”
“The usual punishment for- for putting hands on another student is a week suspension. But seeing as this is Y/N’s first offense, and she’s really a top notch student - which is no surprise seeing who her family is.” Morita gushed, still in awe with your dad being there. “I suppose we can just send her home today and then detention for the rest of the week.”
“That’s not gonna work.” Tony shook his head.
“It’s not?” You asked from your chair. “What’s wrong with that?”
“She works at Stark Industries with Peter right after school. She can’t be in detention.” Tony looked down at you and shot you a quick wink. You smiled slightly, turning to see your principal’s reaction.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Stark but that’s the best I can do. I’m already-”
“You’re not gonna talk to the other one so why even bother with her?” Tony reasoned. “Let her off with a warning and call it a day. Everyone’s happy.”
Morita sighed slightly before nodding. “She’ll be sent home today. If she does this again, we’ll have to take more assertive action.”
“Fair enough.” You shrugged.
Tony led you out of your school and to his car. Luckily, no one was in the halls. Neither of you spoke until you reached the car, driving in the opposite direction of your apartment. Your phone vibrated in your pocket, pulling it out you saw it was Peter.
parker🕷: everything okay?? parker🕷: i really need to talk to you parker🕷: please :( parker🕷: ik your probably still upset about 🕷 but idk where we stand anymore and if we’re even together anymore. i love you and this feels weird and i dont like it
You sighed slightly, shoving your phone into your backpack. You thought about the spider emoji that you put by his name, hoping that it would help you normalize the fact that Peter was Spiderman. But it didn’t. If anything it just made it worse, constantly reminding you of the conversation that you had in your bedroom.
“You’re ignoring him.” Tony finally said.
“No, I’m not.” You countered.
“He just texted me saying that you’ll only talk to him at school and he thinks you’re going to break up with him.”
“You didn’t even pull your phone out.” You rolled your eyes slightly. “I’m not answering any texts at the moment so Peter isn’t special.”
“Peter isn’t special?”
“You know what I meant.” You waved him off. “I wouldn’t even know what to say to him.”
“Here.” Tony offered you his sunglasses, seemingly trying to change the subject. “Put them on.”
You took the glasses with a reluctant sigh, sliding them onto your face. “What’s so special about these?”
Just as that sentence left your mouth, they lit up like a screen. Everything you looked at was analyzed and you were shown facts about it. When you looked at Tony, you saw some notes about him. The name of his latest suit upgrade, his net worth, his birthday, his age, and his title at Stark Industries.
“Woah.” You breathed in amazement.
“You like them?” Tony smiled.
“They’re incredible.”
“These are for you, then.” Tony took his glasses off your face and handed you a case instead. You opened it to find a similar pair to Tony’s. The lenses were a bit smaller and the frame was designed differently, but the lenses had the same tint. You stared at the gift with soft appreciation.
“Tony, you didn’t have to.” You reasoned.
“Yeah, I did.” He nodded. “You’re my kid so you should have something like this.”
“Are you sure?” You questioned. You were hoping to find a reason for him to take them back, feeling that you didn’t deserve a gift from Tony. “After the way I’ve been acting, ignoring you and Peter. And I’ve been so angry since you left… I don’t deserve these.”
“Sure you do.” Tony urged. “Look, when Peter told me that someone he loved was Heretic, the boy was near tears. He kept it a secret because he didn’t want to upset you and get to a point like this.”
“My life's just a faded memory of one I can't have And everything 'round me is starting to fade into black.” You said sadly. “I can’t just go back to the way it was so everything can be normal again.”
“Your boyfriend and your dad are superheroes. There is no going back to normal.”
“Exactly.” You turned in your seat to face your dad. “I love Peter. I really do. And I think I want to have a better relationship with you. But I’m hurting and I’m confused.”
“Let me ask you something.. Peter said you act like everything is normal at school. Why?”
“So that way I don’t have to explain anything to our friends.” You answered. “It protects both of our secrets that way.”
“But you won’t talk to Peter outside of school so you don’t have to pretend?”
“I get it, alright?” You said quickly. “It’s not fair to Peter. It’s always about Peter. We have to make sure Peter is happy.”
“I’m not worried about Peter right now.” He shook his head. “He’s not my kid. You are. And I know I’m still new at this whole ‘father figure’ thing and I got a lot to make up for, but I can see that this is messing with your head. I’ve been there, when nothing feels right but you have to put on a show anyways. Trust me, kid, I get it. But I can tell you that it’s all going to catch up to you, Y/N. And when it does, it may be too late to mend those relationships. For your sake, and yes even Peter’s, you gotta open up a bit.”
You pondered his words, digesting what he meant. It made sense. You could lose Peter if you kept this up. But you also wondered what happened to the great Tony Stark that would’ve messed with his head. You had never noticed any sort of emotional turmoil when he was in front of a camera, but you figured that was the point.
“I don’t have a lot of ‘father figure’ experience either, but you seem alright to me. At least you’re trying, you know?” You smiled softly. “Thanks, Dad.”
“Did you mean to call me Dad or was that a slip up?” He teased. “Cause you don’t have me as Dad in your phone.”
“Do you want me to change it?” You laughed.
“Yes, actually. I do.”
“Okay.” You chuckled as you pulled out your phone. The messages from Peter distracted you for a moment.
parker🕷: have fun with your dad. i love you🖤🖤 parker🕷: call me when youre home?🥺🥺
You sent a quick reply to Peter before changing Tony’s contact name from tony to old man stark. You showed Tony the new contact with a cheesy smile before jumping into a conversation about where you were going. Tony was actually taking you to Columbia University to watch a Columbia vs. Princeton softball game. You gushed about how much you loved the sport, how you pitched for a club softball team, how you were trying to get Midtown to adopt a softball team.
Peter was working on homework when you finally texted him back. The quick motion to grab his phone almost took him out of his computer chair. He opened his phone without hesitation, reading over the message several times.
pretty girl🤩💛: come by tonight? maybe we can talk pretty girl🤩💛: i owe u an explanation… srry😔
Peter’s heart soared. You had finally messaged him back after a week and you actually wanted to talk to him. He wanted to keep the conversation going, to not lose that interaction with you. So, he sent a message. But he instantly regretted it so he sent a couple more to try and recover.
parker🕷: of course baby. as 🕷 or 😇??? parker🕷: cause ill do either. idk who you wanna see tho parker🕷: what are you and mr stark doing today???👀
The first message Peter sent made your heart drop when you read it. It was a swift kick to the gut as a reminder that Peter had two lives. He was two different people. You tried to see them as not different people, but different sides to the same person. But it was still hard.
pretty girl🤩💛: whichever. i just wanna see u on my fire escape tonight when u get a chance… i miss u and i wanna try and fix stuff🥺 pretty girl🤩💛: hes taking me to columbia for a columbia/princeton softball game!! im so excited!!!!! text u in a bit🥎🥎
When you got home from spending the day with your dad at the game and then getting dinner at a nice restaurant, your mom was waiting for you. She asked what happened at school and why you weren’t home when she got home. She said that she wasn’t happy that you ran off with Tony without telling her.
“You wanted me to let him into my life.” You said as your defense. “Are you seriously mad at me for spending a day with my dad?”
“When you were pulled out of school for assaulting another student, yes. I am mad.” She said firmly.
“Flash hit me, Mom.” You explained carefully. “He tried to hit Peter, but he hit me.”
“That’s not what Principal Morita told me.”
“Who do you really believe?” You waited for a response, but she simply crossed her arms. “You know what, you’re right.” You chuckled in annoyance. “Next time, I’ll just let the boy hit me.”
“That’s not what I meant, Y/N, and you know it.” She said firmly.
“Well, what do you mean then!?” You threw your arms out in front of you. “Dad and Peter were the only ones on my side today. Morita thought I was just starting a fight and so do you. You were the one who wanted me to be able to defend myself, to stand up for myself. And when I do, I get penalized in my own home.”
Before letting your mom answer, you went into your room. You let out a deep sigh before changing into pajamas. You hung up the shirt your dad got you from the game and gathered some homework supplies. You took your laptop, phone, Chemistry textbook, your notebook, and your pencil pouch with you on your fire escape. You played your music softly, bobbing your head as you typed notes and solved the equations in your notebook.
You waited for Peter to show up, but you were on your fire escape for a couple hours after your work was done. You had put all your school supplies away, leaving you and your phone wrapped in a blanket outside. It was just past midnight when you gave up. You were pulling out your phone to text Peter when he landed beside you on the fire escape.
“Hey.” He said from behind the mask. You realized his voice sounded different than it did last time you had talked to him in his suit. This time you could tell it was his voice. “Sorry, got caught up with a bank robbery.”
“Are you okay?” You asked softly, gathering your blanket to stand.
“Yeah, I’m good.” He shrugged. “Did you have fun with Mr. Stark?”
“It was really great, yeah.” You smiled. “Your voice sounds different… When we would fight and you were in your suit, you didn’t sound like you.”
“Yeah, there was a program that would make my voice sound different. But I turned it off on my way over.”
“Oh.” You nodded slightly. “Can you come inside or are you on a schedule?”
“I’m all yours for the rest of the night.”
You crawled inside first, Peter right behind you. He helped you collect your blanket and you two stood in the middle of your room. You tossed your massive blanket aside, placing your hands on your lower back. Peter fiddled with his fingers, unsure of what to do and what to say.
“Can you… Can you take off the mask?” You gestured to his face and Peter slowly took off the fabric.
You admired him for a moment, watching the way his eyes adjusted to the bright lights of your room. His curls were messy, slightly sweaty and out of place. His cheeks were flushed, his lips pressed into a fine line. It was like the first time seeing Peter.
“Say something, please.” Peter said softly, almost pleading.
“Your hair looks cute when it’s messy.” You tried.
“That’s not what I meant.” He sighed.
“I’m sorry. It’s a lot to take in, I guess.” Your eyes scanned Peter’s figure in the suit, a familiar desire to be close to Peter blossoming in your chest. “You look good though.”
“Y/N-” He tried again.
You shut him up quickly with a kiss. Your lips met his before he could say another word, your hands sliding up his chest to their place at the nape of his neck. His hands were on your hips, pulling you closer to him. His grip on your hips was tighter than usual but you weren’t complaining. You pulled him down to your height, drawing a small chuckle from him.
“Not that I’m complaining.” He said with a smile when he pulled away. He looked down at you with a soft expression. A content feeling filled his chest. He was elated to be so close to you again. Things felt right when you were close, as if there wasn’t a seemingly growing divide between you two. “But we both know why you asked me to come by tonight. Say something, please.”
“Lately, I’m counting the words that I haven’t said.” You admitted with a sad sigh, walking away from Peter to sit on your bed. Peter turned to watch you go, not sure if you wanted him to follow. Part of you did, but part of you still wanted to kick him out and never have to see him in the suit ever again. “My heart’s so heavy, it’s ready to fall out twice.”
“I’m so sorry, Y/N.” He took a quick step closer, his hands out in front. He wanted to reach for you. He wanted to hold your hands and pull you into his chest for a hug. But the pain in your voice, the sadness your words held, it kept him at a distance. “I wanted to tell you sooner. I just- I- I didn’t want to lose you.”
“Is this any better?” You scoffed. You felt the back of your eyes burn, hot tears threatening to fall. But you swallowed hard, keeping the pain inside. It wasn’t fair to take it out on Peter, but you were still upset with him. “Is this honestly any better?”
“I was wrong. I know that.” He tried desperately. “Tell me what I can do to fix this.”
“You can’t just fix this, Peter! That’s what you don’t seem to get.” You snapped loudly. You paused, waiting to hear if it woke up your mom. When no noise came from down the hall, you kept going. “I understand why you didn’t tell me… I really do. But I need you to understand where I’m coming from.”
“I do.”
“You don’t.” You shook your head, closing your eyes to try to keep your voice level. “I grew up despising superheroes because I felt like I was abandoned by one. I grew up with the idea that superheroes were an act, a facade put on by men with God complexes to get the admiration they craved. Then suddenly, my dad wants to actually be a dad. Great. I’m actually enjoying having him in my life. But to make matters worse, my boyfriend turns out to be the hero that I’ve been going up against for weeks. Peter, I’ve stabbed you and I’ve thrown you off a building!”
“But I’m fine!” He countered. You threw your hands up in annoyance, disappointed that Peter seemed to miss the whole point of what you were saying.
“I can see that, but I’m not!” You urged. “Part of me wants to hate you… I don’t, but part of me wants to.”
“Because you hate Spiderman…”
You nodded silently. You didn’t even want to admit that you did. You weren’t even sure if that was necessarily the truth. But it was the best word you had for the feeling you got when you thought of Spiderman.
“But you don’t hate Peter… Right?”
“Peter, I love you more than anything. I need you to know that above all else, I love you.” You jumped up from your bed, taking his hands in yours. His eyes dropped, closing tightly. A small tear slipped through his closed lids, and the sight nearly broke you. “I really do love you and I’m trying. I’m really trying cause I know you don’t deserve this.”
“I don’t want to pressure you, but I just can’t take it. Whatever it is we’re doing right now…” Peter said tightly. You could tell it was taking everything he had to not fall apart right in front of you.
“What are you saying?” You asked quietly, backing away and letting your grip on his hands slip away.
“I love you, Y/N. But I can’t sit here and pretend to be okay with this. You act one way at school in front of our friends. You’ll act like everything is fine and then you turn around and ignore me.”
“Would you rather me ignore you completely?” You scoffed. “If I ignore you completely, someone is gonna ask what’s wrong. Then how am I going to explain this one? How do I explain that my boyfriend is actually Spiderman and I’m fighting myself over what to do next?”
“I’d rather you not ignore me at all… If you need space to figure this out, I get it. But just say that’s what you need and I’ll give it to you.”
“I don’t know what I need in the long run. I just need you tonight… I need Peter tonight.”
“Peter and Spiderman are the same person, baby. I need you to need both.”
“I can’t… Not right now.”
Peter took the few steps to close the distance. He leaned down and placed a sweet kiss on your cheek. He sighed slightly, backing towards your window. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” He said sadly.
“Wait!” You called, stopping him on your fire escape. He pulled down his mask and turned to you, waiting for your next few words. “You’re not gonna stay?” His silence was enough of an answer for you. “Are we gonna be okay?”
“You need time to figure it out…”
“Are you breaking up with me?” You were silently pleading that he wasn’t. You didn’t think you could take it if you lost him. Not over this.
“I’m giving you the space you need.” He said before disappearing.
You didn’t sleep that night. You stayed up, pacing and crying. You pulled your knives out from under your bed and shoved them back multiple times, not knowing what to do with the newfound pain in your chest. You wanted to default to what you had done, covering your face and taking out your pain in small acts that couldn’t be traced back to you. You wanted to go out and pick a fight, find a physical distraction to clear your muggy thoughts, if only for a few minutes at a time. But you knew you couldn’t. You shouldn’t. You had sworn off Heretic. She had caused you more harm than good at the end of the day.
No, you couldn’t dawn that mask again. You couldn’t pick up those knives again. Instead, you paced. You cried. You blamed yourself. You dialed Peter, then hung up after one ring. You dialed Tony, but hung up when you realized it was three in the morning. You sat on your fire escape, laying down and staring at the sky. You tried to settle yourself. You tried to collect your thoughts and rationalize them. But you didn’t know where to start.
It was stupid to let yourself lose Peter because of your vendetta against heroes. You were trying to work through it, to put it in the past and allow yourself to see past the masks, and you were willing to look past it so you could have your dad in your life. It was starting to become easier to be around your dad, but maybe that was because you only interacted with him as Tony. You never talked to him as Iron Man.
That was when you realized the difference. It wasn’t because you had found out Peter was Spiderman. It wasn’t because he kept it hidden from you, and you had done terrible things to him without thinking twice about it. It was because you knew Peter, you loved Peter, but you had a different relationship with Spiderman. You were at odds with Spiderman, not quite enemies but no where near friends. You were trying to merge two relationships that were polar opposites. You couldn’t keep it separate any longer, but you couldn’t mesh them so easily. It was going to take time, maybe some sort of grand gesture.
When the sun started shining, you climbed back into your room. You saw the dark circles under your eyes, weighing heavy on your facial features. You wiped the exhaustion from your face before gathering clothes for a cold shower. You got yourself ready, covering all signs of your internal crisis. Your dad had called you back so you explained everything to him. He offered for you to come to the tower after school, suggesting that the distraction could be exactly what you needed. You braced yourself for seeing Peter at school.
The thought was terrifying. You had no idea how Peter would act when he saw you. Would things be normal? Would he do what you did and pretend that there were no issues? Or would he run? Would he avoid you so he didn’t have to pretend, in essence leaving you to explain to your nosy - but well intended - friends why Peter wasn’t around?
