hello! i hope you’re having a wonderful day 💕 i wanted to ask if you know of, or have any literature or book recommendations that surround Ottoman Era Greece, The Revolution or the 19th century? i’ve been trying to find stuff but all that comes up is greek myth retellings it’s rather annoying 😭. if they have an english translated version that would also be superb! fiction or nonfiction i don’t mind, i’m just super keen to read and learn more about that era of Greek history many seem to overlook. Hello! Very sorry for being late to answer this but I was gathering books. While I have read historical articles and texts on the Revolution and the Ottoman period, they were in Greek. I will list here books I found in English, mostly by foreign authors. I checked them and they seem mostly fine (I usually try to avoid those with specific western agendas in the descriptions, and generally I am trying to show the most objective works. Many new details about the biography and past criminal history of Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, the Magdeburg Christmas market attacker, have emerged in the past week. Unfortunately, I’ve been quite sick with some obnoxious respiratory virus, so my reporting has fallen behind, but I am determined to get this information out there. I apologise if this post lacks energy – I am typing it through a mild headache and serious exhaustion.

The dishonesty about al-Abdulmohsen and his motives has been staggering. While those on the German left are sparing no effort to portray the attacker as a right-wing terrorist and “AfD sympathiser,” loud voices on the right have spent days insisting that he was some kind of sleeper jihadist agent.

Neither is remotely true. All the evidence shows that al-Abdulmohsen was a paranoid, mentally unstable and professionally incompetent doctor with a long history of making terroristic threats to satisfy petty personal grievances. Anti-Islam statements from the AfD appealed to him, but beyond that al-Abdulmohsen had no developed political vision, and his self-styled refugee advocacy put him at odds with core elements of the AfD party platform. His entire internet presence is moreover uniformly anti-Islamic; all the tweets cited to support the argument that he was a crypto-Muslim are invariably misinterpreted or taken out of context.

The real story here is the failure of German police and immigration bureaucrats to do anything about this obviously unbalanced and dangerous man. In Germany, pensioners who call Green politicians “morons” get their houses raided by the police, while insane migrants who promise over and over to commit terrorist acts attract no attention. Authorities neglected to deport al-Abdulmohsen even after he overstayed his original visa, then granted and extended new residence permits despite his increasingly erratic behaviour. Al-Abdulmohsen received political asylum in 2016, two years after a court fined him for making terroristic threats. In 2023, as al-Abdulmohsen’s mental state deteriorated and his continuing threats brought him to the notice of the police again and again, he was granted permanent residence in Germany. As late as May of this year, he was even tweeting veiled threats directly at Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Says ‘They Can Control The Weather,’ Promoting Conspiracy About Hurricane Helene

“Yes, they can control the weather,” Greene wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, Thursday evening. “It’s ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can’t be done.”

“This is a map of hurricane affected areas with an overlay of electoral map by political party shows how hurricane devastation could affect the election,” Greene wrote Thursday morning.

The map Greene posted appears to have been created by Matt Wallace, a dodgy crypto influencer and conspiracy theorist with over 2 million followers on X. “This took me a long time to make!” Wallace wrote on Sept. 30, posting an image of the map. “I created map showing the path of destruction of Hurricane Helene with an overlay of the 2020 election results... The storm seemed to almost methodically miss the bluest parts of those crucial swing states, while simultaneously ravaging the red parts. What a crazy coincidence!”

“If I was a conspiracy theorist, I might assume that this is a big part of the reason why Biden and Kamala are still prioritizing aid to illegals over aid to citizens impacted by the storm,” Wallace wrote. “I would also wonder if it was all be design."

Okay, so first, if the Democrats control the weather, don't you think they would make some headway in solving climate change?

Second, I am a registered Democrat, where do I sign up for the weather control classes?

And finally, if this were true, not only would the Democrats be the best party with the most rizz, but also, if they lose, why aren't the Republicans afraid of the earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, hail storms and blizzards that would ensue?

Guys, I am really into crypto these days--crypto-gams, that is! Cryptogams are organisms which reproduce via spores, not flowers and seeds. Literally the name means "hidden reproduction," and since the mycobiomes of lichens reproduce via tiny little spores that are yeah, pretty damn hidden, they fall into the category of cryptogams! The algal and cyanobacterial photobionts of lichens are also cryptogams, so lichens are like, the MOST cryptogam organisms, if you think about. Anyway, here is a delightful little crypto-pal for you to admire today, A. subcentrifuga. This foliose lichen has long, convex lobes which grow in concentric, incomplete rings. The upper surface is pale yellow-green or gray in color with a network of thin cracks running throughout. In older areas of the thallus (toward the center of the ring) these cracks widen and become pustule-like soralia which produce coarse soredia. Oddly, the descriptions of these lichens I can find online don't mention it producing apothecia (the fruiting bodies which produce the sexual spores of the mycobiont), but one of the pictures I have here clearly shows apothecia? IDK, cryptogams are gonna be cryptic, I guess. They has a reputation to maintain. A. subcentirfuga grows on talus, boulders and cliff-faces in montane, alpine, and arctic regions of North America, northern South America, and Scandinavia. Can I say it's a cryptid? Probably not without confusing people, but I will do so in my heart.

As a lone wolf alpha male, I don't need any friends, let alone feel the need to mess with friends i don't even need. Once again, rain battered the windows of the Crypto Castle. A blue fire crackled within the fireplace that housed all the… guests. On one side of the room sat the Alliance; on the other side sat Hordak’s brothers and the former horde soldiers. Right in the middle sat the former warlord upon an armchair, his fists balled into his pants. Entrapta sat on the arm of the chair with her hair wrapped around Hordak’s bicep. He cleared his throat.

“Now, I am under the impression that you all know why you are here. I would like to first apologize for my outburst yesterday. It was inappropriate of me, and I should have acted more rationally.” After a moment, Hordak looked at Entrapta. 

“Do you recall when I told you where I came from?”

“Yes.”

“That was partially a lie. I am not a clone I am the actual biological child of Horde Prime.” Hordak glanced down at his fists as everyone reacted with varying levels of shock.

“Why in the world would Prime want a baby?” Mermista expressed.

“He never wanted me. I was an accident my mother insisted on keeping. According to him at least.”

“Mother?” Castaspella inquired.

“Yes, I had a mother who is the only reason I am still alive. According to Prime, when my mother found out she was pregnant with me she insisted they kept me. Prime agreed as long as I was not a distraction.”

“If it is not too personal, could you tell us what she was like?” Castaspella inquired.

“I think we crossed the line of personal business a while ago.” Catra retorted, gaining a glare from Adora and Glimmer.

Like many rooms in the Velvet Glove, it was a blinding white with black accents and smelled strongly of bleach.

Orion looked up to the sound of the green barrier dissolving. His mother stepped through the door.

“What! Please five more minutes, mama.”

“No, buts star sweeper, it is already past your bedtime.” She took the book from his hands, careful to mark Orion’s place. She started to usher him to bed as a thought popped into his head.

“Mama, why did you name me Orion?”

“Well, when I was giving birth to you, the Velvet Glove was passing right through a constellation named Orion by the local beings. Legend says he was a giant who was a mighty warrior and a huntsman that was immortalized in the stars.”

“Will you stop filling his head with that nonsense?” Orion’s father, Horde Prime stood at the door.

“Darling, it’s only a story.”

“A stupid one at that,” he looked to his left. “Is that my book?” He stomped over to the armchair, swiping the book and ripping out the bookmark. “Tell your child to stop taking my things.” He stormed out of the room, closing the barrier between the two bedrooms.

“I’m sorry,” Orion whispered, balling his fists into the bedsheets.

“Oh, don’t worry about it. Your father is just having a bad day.”

“He’s always having a bad day.”

“I know.”

“Can you sing that one song for me again?”

“Anything for your star sweeper.

Just like his mother had told him to do, Orion hid in his closet as his parents screamed at each other. He didn’t know how it started he just knew it was about him. It was always about him. 

Maybe Father is right. Maybe I am a nuisance.

He could never figure out why his father detested him so much. Maybe it was his appearance. While he looked more like his mother there were some staggering differences in looks. For one, his eyes were crimson red when his parents were electric lime green. His hair was also different, with his being navy blue, short, and curly while his parents were white, long, and straight.

At that point, his parents were close enough to the door that he could make out what they were saying.

“I just don’t get the obsession you have with that thing! It was bad enough you wanted to keep it, but spending almost all your time with it!”

“First of all, that thing is your seven-year-old son, whom I am trying to raise by myself since you have put absolutely zero effort into even being nice too!”

“That’s another thing! With every passing day, you become more and more defiant! It has gotten out of hand!”

“And I apologize for that, but I just want you to be involved in raising the child you helped create!”

“When the universe implodes, I will be involved.”

“You are such a…hmm”

“Go ahead. Finish what you were saying.”

“Fine. You are a cold, narcissistic, uncaring man who has never given a single thought to anyone but yourself! You are a terrible father and a terrible husband that sucks the life of everyone around you!”

“There is no hope for you after all.”

“Oh, sweetheart,” Castaspella whispered, covering her mouth.

“Please, the very least you can do is not pity me. Is there anything else you all want to ask or are we done here?”

“No there isn’t,” Glimmer rose from her seat. “Thank you for telling us this and we are sorry we put you in this position. Guys let's go.” At her command, the Alliance filed out of the room leaving Hordak, Entrapta, and the five brothers in the room.

Hordak slumped down him his seat. Groaning as he buried his face in his hands. He looked up at his family.

“I am sorry.”

“For what?” Entrapta asked, wrapping her hands around his bicep.

“Lying to all of you about everything.”

“HK, that doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’re ok.”

“I’m fine. It happened a long time ago.”

“Still, if there is anything you need we are all right here.” Entrapta placed her hand on Hordak’s shoulder, receiving a small smile from the former warlord. “Come on,” she rose from her seat, “it’s past lunchtime and I know you haven’t eaten anything.”

“Nothing is wrong. After today I want to join you on your quest to befriend Hordak. Today has made me realize how hard he has had it, and maybe, like Catra, positive relations could get him on the straight and narrow.”

“That’s great! I’m glad someone finally gets it. My only problem is breaking the ice. I tried to talk to him once, but he was so dismissive. We need to get him in a place where he would be willing to socialize.”

-I have never hated a character quite as much as I hate Dio, and that rules

-It's cool how I'm sort of along for the ride, I'm okay with the characters figuring things out before I do because I knew I probably could have solved it if I was paying the right attention. Plus, I have my own theories, and I can't wait to see them disproven!

-Okay so I have to talk about this somewhere because I'm just gonna die if I don't tell Somebody: I am extremely sensitive these days to when games are inaccessible. I do not mean hard, I mean disability-hostile. And like, it's bad enough that a core plot mechanic in VLR is based on specific hues on a color wheel, but some of the actual puzzles also assume you can tell red, yellow, and green apart. The story bit is mostly fine because the characters at least say their bracelet colors in dialogue, but the inaccessible puzzles piss me off. Uchikoshi, you know about prosopagnosia, I know you know about colorblindness.

-While I do appreciate the smoothness on character animation that comes from being a 3D game, I'm gonna miss 999's environments being pre-rendered stills. Moving a camera around all the time gets kinda annoying after a while. I mean it was annoying pretty early. Plus, those pre-rendered door opening animations gave the game a real "Classic Resident Evil" style eerieness that just isn't there with VLR's boring doors. I have never been disappointed by a door in a game until now.

The event was the most sedate 'protest' I've ever been to.

I gave sis a quick opsec rundown before we left the house, locked my phone with a pattern and switched off, pointed out the various cops (1 for about every 5 people) found a bench and sat myself down. I was the only person wearing a mask and was expecting more of a somber vigil than the friendly hopeful chatty meet up, pain and emotional whiplash made me want to wait and see if people would engage with me rather than the opposite.

The event was organised by the local unions, lefties and greens and the league for defense of human rights. I quickly twigged that the reason they were so chill is that they've spent half the year clashing violently for workers rights and against police violence so a quiet meet with no slogans and no signs is a very different experience. One guy had spent the day before kettled by police until a judge approved the pro Palestine march in a city two hours away and the police had to retreat.

[The human rights folks have offices about 500m from our building, I remember coming across it in a cul de sac while looking for a post box and wondering if I got much weller, would they'd be interested in a fluent translator, I'd rise to the challenge of learning legalese and handle patois/créoles pretty well in both languages.]

Sis made some connections: chatted about accessibility and ecology with two people then after about 15 minutes the union leader read out a pre-approved statement which had been carefully worded: anti war crimes, pro accountability, pro human rights, condemnation of backlash against jews and muslims and a quick acknowledgement of last week's peaceful pro Palestine meet that got banned.

There were few young people and one woman in a veil, I'm guessing they either travelled to where clear protest is allowed or are trying to stay under the radar. There are a lot of muslim locals who feel it isn't their business, twenty years of being dragged for every muslim or north african action is exhausting. Being accepted as your own 'thing' means staying away from politics or having to answer twenty bad faith questions from randos. Just on the way to the meet, I got a crypto-racist rant from a dude we know and couldn't get a word in edgeways to counter.

I took monday 'off' to reflect a little on having to witness the horrors from your house to the news throughout our lives and how much your mind resorts to dramatic threats 'just stop caring about everything then' or even just going numb in tantrums. (I was hoping to have a chance to mourn in some way but that didn't happen either so that's still heavy and may never fade.)

And just how hard it was to tap into hope even while surrounded by people who have fought losing battles their whole lives and kept the faith. I'm really touched by a lot of local initiatives that are doing a lot of good and am heavily invested in the food bank, family planning and social rehab programs.

But yeah, the idea that even all of us protesting could override the weapons manufacturers and defence ministry's investments in a strategic middle eastern country just makes a inner cynical voice laugh and that's very ugly and it's much stronger these days.

The ugliness has been there for as long as I remember, way back to childhood talks about how to handle bullying gracefully by patronising teachers and how we'll save the planet by remembering to switch off the lights and taps like half the class wasn't rationing electric use and wearing winter clothes at home.

I have not made peace with my inner nihilist side. We co-exist in a constant clash, it's not that I have a hopeful side to counter balance her but I shut her up with action I guess. Fighting becoming spiteful with spite, what a mess... It produces hope in others so at least I have anecdotal evidence on my not hopeful but not completely resigned side LMAO.

But I couldn't even fake hope for show, I kept my mouth shut but I wasn't encouraging to sis either. Have to 'hope' being present was enough and keep on keeping on in my own little ways.

You tell yourself everyone is complicated and fractured then you meet people who truly honestly believe in the inherent goodness of humanity and the universe and you and your monsters are thrown in stark relief.

To the person who said they don't understand how something virtual (like an NFT) can be bad for the environment:

I am not good at explaining things but I'll try my best lol. NFTs do not cause any kind of environmental impact by simply existing, what's actually harmful is the way in which they are produced and stored after production. Basically, most production/storage methods used to contain NFTs produce a shitload, and I mean a SHITLOAD of carbon dioxide on a daily basis. Carbon dioxide produced in insane quantities speeds climate change. So, in other words: producing/storing NFTs = Overheated planet.

Not all production/storage methods are harmful though. Some blockchains use renewable energy or eco-friendly technology. Since the boys said the ones they're creating are eco-friendly, I'm assuming they did some research and partnered with a marketplace that has environmentally conscious ethics. It is their responsibility as public figures to disclose as much information about this as possible so their fans can make informed decisions if they wanna get involved with this, because sometimes brands claim to be green or whatever and then they're just lying (aka greenwashing). If they're going to do this, they need to show receipts and drop names. In my personal opinion they already did a bad job at announcing this without providing enough information or answering people's questions because from what I've seen people are clueless and freaking the fuck out, but given the way they've handled stuff in the past it doesn't surprise me lol.

Lastly, please keep in mind that there are MANY things that we all do on a daily basis that contribute to carbon dioxide emissions, so please think long and hard about your own daily routine before pointing fingers and saying the boys are hypocrites. If you're using the internet chronically (like myself) or if you're binge watching netflix shows on the daily on 4K quality you're in no position to shame those who are into crypto.
