Unanswered questions about Dazai's backstory that are driving me fucking insane
(Yeah, so, completely against my will, Bungou Stray Dogs has been consuming every last neuron in my brain for the past several weeks, so I thought I'd share my unraveling)
(mentions of eye injuries and self-harm/attempted suicide below the cut, if you're sensitive to those kinds of things).
(1) In season 2, episode 3, when Ango turns out to be a spy in the Port Mafia, Dazai says, "Everything I never want to lose is always lost. Everything worth wanting is lost the moment I obtain it. And nothing I pursue is worth the cost of prolonging this life, this suffering." Like! What the fuck does this mean?!?!! What happened in Dazai's life that made him think this? The way he says it indicates that him "losing things he wants to keep" has happened often enough for it to become a pattern for him, so what was Dazai talking about when he said this?
(2) In season 3, episode 3, why did Dazai say "thank you" to the old Port Mafia boss when he killed Rimbaud's double of him?
Tumblr media
In the sub, he says "let me thank you for once," and in the dub, he says "I'll never get another chance to say this, so thank you". Why did he say that?
(3) Why did Dazai keep his eye covered as a teenager? At first, I assumed it was because Dazai had some kind of injury that he was covering, considering how easily it bled every time Dazai sustained some kind of damage to his head or face, but never to the eye directly. In episode 1 of season 2, when a bullet grazes the side of his face, his eye starts to bleed
Tumblr media
and the same thing happens again in episode 1 of season 3 when Chuuya kicks him into a wall.
Tumblr media
BUT! When Oda's dying and he pulls Dazai's bandages off, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with his eye. And it can't be that Dazai was just wearing them as some kind of intimidation tactic; there had to have been something wrong with it, because we see it bleed twice (even though the eye itself never sustained any direct injury), but there is no visual indication that anything is wrong with his eye, either in the flashbacks or in the present (no scars, seemingly no vision issues, and no discoloration in the eye like you might expect to see as a result of permanent damage). So I am asking WHAT THE FUCK WERE THE BANDAGES FOR
(4) Where did Dazai come from before he was in the Port Mafia? We know that he was a witness to the old boss's murder when he was 14, but Dazai wasn't an official Mafia member until he was 15 when Mori tasked him to work the Arahabaki case. Was Dazai always connected to the Mafia in some way, or did he come from a normal family before Mori inducted him?
(5) FOLLOWING THAT: where are Dazai's parents? In the "Fifteen" novel, it's stated that Dazai wasn't a mere orphan that Mori just picked up, but we don't know if Dazai's parents are dead or alive or where they would be if they were alive.
(6) What are Dazai's bandages actually for? Given Dazai's track record of suicide attempts, it's a common theory that the bandages are to hide self harm scars (I subscribe to this theory myself, as it's the most plausible), but we don't actually know because we've never seen Dazai without his bandages before.
EDIT: (7) Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. In season 3, episode 2-
Tumblr media
What is the motivation behind this scene? Why does Dazai keep shooting? Why does he think that the soldier deserved to suffer more? Dazai offers the guy a more merciful death, but Dazai also thinks that a merciful death is "more than he deserves". Why does Dazai think this? This can't just be about this one soldier, because Dazai hasn't had any kind of encounter with him before this. Dazai is clearly having some kind of small breakdown, but what triggered it and why?

Thoughts on the hc that Dazai has a glass eye?
I'm just imagining Dazai getting injured on a case on his blind side, and Kunikida berates him and drags him to Yosano.
And Yosano is like "Really, again? How did it happen this time?" And Kunikida says "Idiot wasn't paying attention."
Dazai "No I was, its just my blind side."
And they both freak out because why? How? Huh? But his eye looks fine?
Yosano: Well, I can schedule an appointment and we can see if we can get you surgery or something-
Dazai: Oh its unsalvagable, I'm blind on that side.
Kunikida: Why does your eye look fine then??? (He thinks Dazai is fucking with him)
Dazai just smiles, reaches up and pull the glass eye out. Kunikida screams.
- Goblin anon
Oh my gosh alsksjdjfjf honestly I think this hc is great just for that potential moment of screaming confusion on Kunikida’s part, Dazai absolutely would do that XD
I guess in general I haven’t thought much about the implications of Dazai bandaging that eye! I know I’ve definitely seen fics and stuff where his vision is off in that eye in one way or another (@feralrookie wrote a fantastic soulmate AU where Dazai’s soulmark is on that eye and it gutted me in the best way). I think it’s really fun to see where different people go with it :0
I do think it’s interesting that he swaps which eye he bandages in the Beast universe…that feels like it has Implications but I’m not sure what they are, I’m not very skilled at analysis lol —Although, slightly related, I do love the moment in the Dark Era where Oda pulls those bandages off as he dies, because it seems like a visual representation of how much Dazai was hindering himself in the mafia (seriously, if there isn’t anything wrong with that eye, that means the dude was shooting guns without precise depth perception seemingly just for the heck of it) and then Oda pulls them off as he tells him to go live in the light and just aaaaaaaaaaaaa I am never not going to be emotional about the dark era ;;
…anyway this got off topic, basically all this to say I think that I think it’s cool how many different interpretations of it there are, and you could definitely do a lot with the glass eye headcanon alskjdjdjd

guys @downbadforpixels sent me this
Tumblr media
and told me “pm + ada karaoke/just dance night because i said so and dazai as the princess and chuuya as the prince except chuuya actually pulls out a ring” and i 100% agree. so here’s SOUKOKU JUST DANCE SHENANIGANS
because yes, kouyou did set them up. she hides a cheeky smile behind the sleeve of her kimono before settling down next to the agency’s doctor, chatting with her amiably while she keeps an eye on dazai and chuuya. they had dragged each other onto the cleared dance floor, elbowing each other while their loud argues could be heard by everyone in the room.
the music starts, drawing their attention away from each other, as they get ready to dance. chuuya seems as if he’s right at home, body moving to the beat and executing the moves flawlessly, while dazai seemed slightly awkward with his bolo tie almost flying over his head. the agency and mafia members watch them silently, sipping their drinks and some of them giggling to each other.
as the music reaches the final chorus, chuuya bends down on one knee and reaches a gloved hand into his pant pocket. dazai teasingly stretches out his left hand, holding it in front of chuuya before turning around to kunikida to laugh. however, a few gasps from the surrounding people make him turn his head back in curiosity, only to come face to face with chuuya who was holding out a ring to him.
dazai’s face is flushed. his lighter complexion makes the blood gathering on his cheeks obvious and he can feel his face and neck heat up as he lets out a quiet “eh?” at the sight before him. the ring reflected the dim lights of the room, letting them bounce against the cool metal surface and reflect on the surfaces of the small diamonds on the band.
chuuya encircles dazai’s hands gently, rubbing a gloved thumb across the inside of his wrist. bringing his knuckles up to his lips, he presses against them slightly, reveling in the way dazai seems to have completely shut down. he raises his brows in a silent question, satisfied when dazai nods his head dazedly.
dazai only snaps out of it when the metal band is smoothly inserted onto his left ring finger, and chuuya stands up to pull dazai down into a proper kiss.
the crowd around them cheers as the music continues to play, but the couple only continues to stare into each others eyes before letting their lips meet each other again.
“... i talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress; it’s a love story, baby, just say yes !”

Today is Bungou Stray Dogs’ 10th anniversary.
It’s hard to put into words just how much this series means to me. I don’t have any elaborate, deep story to tell as to why; there is no one character I heavily relate to more than the others, and there wasn’t a particularly hard time in my life it got me through or anything. But BSD is at the core of my most nostalgic memories with fandom, with online friends I made years ago -- many, many happy memories I have of watching the anime in 2016 (which was my introduction to the series), gushing about it, laughing about it, crying about it, discussing it for hours on end, and writing about it. There are many other manga and anime that I love dearly, some even almost as much as it, but none of them have ever been able to reach or surpass BSD for me, even if some of them I would probably call technically better written overall. Its unique style, unique beauty, aesthetic, such bizarre wackiness it has while at the same time carrying so much heart, and its nuanced, raw, and poignant handling of such delicate and realistic subject matter simply make it unlike anything else I have ever seen -- BSD is so unabashedly itself, and you will never find anything else like it. It was written as a love letter to stories by an author who deeply appreciates and was inspired by literature himself, and as someone who is enamored with fiction as well, I can feel every ounce of love and care that Kafka Asagiri puts into his story and these characters, and I adore nearly each and every one of them.
Since the first two seasons of the anime aired and since I first got into it, BSD has had over 100 manga chapters, multiple light novels, multiple stage adaptations, two movies, multiple spinoff series, a mobile game, and the story has gone in directions I never could have imagined years ago, and I’m still here following it all, even after six years. Even as I dip into other obsessions and my BSD fixation temporarily fades, I always, always come back, because it feels like home to me -- hell, I love it so much that I even made an entire visual novel out of Dazai Osamu and the Dark Era, my comfort arc(? lol), out of all the projects I could come up with. It truly is so special to me, in ways I can’t even describe, and I’m constantly rediscovering new things about the series and the characters, and bonding with friends closer over it. It may not be perfect (but nothing is), but I’m still on this wild ride, and I have absolutely no intention of getting off until we reach the finish line, no matter how long that takes. In the meantime, I’m so excited to see how the franchise will grow even more, and I dearly hope that more people will discover it, because despite the fairly sizeable fandom, BSD is still terribly underrated, and deserves to be so much more appreciated, for the masterpiece that it truly is.
Here’s to ten more years. Here’s to the Stray Dogs~ 🥃🥂💖

btw this odasaku's quote still lives rent-free in my head :
I left the accounting firm thinking about Ango, the man slowly slipping into evil somewhere in town. Or perhaps we, the Mafia, were the bad guys while Ango and Mimic were on the side of justice trying to bring us down. I started to believe that this hypothesis actually made even more sense than the others. Dazai, the boss, me, everyone in the Mafia—maybe we all deserved to die burdened with sin, solitude, and remorse. For all I knew, that could’ve been proof of the righteousness of this world.
he really went "is ango evil ? no, that doesn't make sense. more likely, i'm evil, and the mafia, and dazai. that must be it"

Y'all I just realized the pipeline from MCYT to Undertale to back to MCYT to Undertale again to BSD is so real, especially in the Gacha community, I've seen so many people go from MCYT to Undertale and then back to mcyt for a few months then again to Undertale and then finally to BSD(I'm also one of those people..I admit it :') )LIKE SINCE WHEN MY FAV GACHA UNDERTALE GACHATUBER GO FROM UNDERTALE TO MCYT AND THEN NOW I SEE THEM WITH SIGZAI USERNAME AND A CHUUYA PFP???
