most underrated milex moment in your opinion

oooh great question! honestly SO many moments come to mind, but for me i think the prize has to go to this one: alex watching miles perform in 2012 (and miles dedicating colour of the trap to him “this one’s for you, baby!”)

i mean. his expression just says it all, doesn’t it? the quiet wonder, the awe. the total and complete focus, the adoration bordering on worship. it’s… a lot 😭 i also think this moment of alex watching miles performing during their 2016 tour together is WILDLY underrated for just how loud and just how non platonic it is:

then i feel like this moment of them full on having a little kiss during rockwave isn’t talked about as much as it should be???

and also the entire subtext in the bad habits music video. like we talk about how insane miracle aligner is (because it is), but i don’t think we talk enough about how fully deranged the narrative implications and cinematography in bad habits are too 😭🤦🏻‍♀️

i feel like there are so many casual touches between them which are underrated too for how totally, totally non-platonic they are. like they touch each other casually in places that are just inherently so intimate and romantic, not at all the kind of places you’d touch friends. SO many examples of this, but these are two of my favourites:

finally, this award acceptance speech. they’re so ridiculously besotted and wrapped up in each other it’s borderline unbearable to watch lol. alex really wasn’t lying when he said it’s rare for them not to look like they’re about to snog each other 🫠 (here they look like they’re two seconds away from doing far more than that 🤦🏻‍♀️)

there are undoubtedly many more underrated moments (especially as i think we become a little desensitised here to some of them because of the sheer volume of insane moments between them), but those are the first few favourites that came to mind! if anyone has any other underrated moments they’d like to add please feel free to go ahead! 🥰

Now that I've finished watching Monkey Man...I can't help but think of how this is a love letter to India. Yes, the movie focuses on the corruption, the fucked up officials, the casteism, the bigotry, the rot that exists within the country. But I've never seen such a clear depiction of the country done with so much love. The paan made with ungloved hands. The stray dog that will just show up. The hijra women and the statue of ardhanarishvar. A depiction of Hinduism built out of love and not out of the current fervor of hate that is gripping the country. Every small scene was so beautiful.

And I adore Dev Patel so much for this brutal portrayal of everything that's wrong with the country. The politician hiding behind the religious beliefs, the divisive comments causing hate and violence towards the minorities, people being forced out of their land because of some sham godsman. The corruption, the casteism, the ill treatment of the poor and the oppressed. It's all such stark reality.

The cinematography was great and the sound was also really awesome and I can just see how it's such a labour of love. This movie is everything and I can see why the Indian government wouldn't want it released...especially so close to the election. It exposes them too much

You remember when you first hired Agatha.

You were just beginning to dip your toes into the pool of acting, cautiously testing the waters by sending out your less than perfect resume to anyone who would accept. Agatha was the first, and only, acting manager to respond. She too was new to her field, so far only representing people who specialized in car commercials and medicine ads. She wanted a change of pace and your lack luster resume spoke to her. Some part of you still wanders why she picked to represent you, even though in the end everything worked out incredibly well, you wanted to know why she wanted to work with you.

Because now it seemed like she wanted nothing to do with you.

At the beginning, it was like the two of you couldn't be seperated. Outside of work hours, many movie nights happened, sometimes an excuse for Agatha to show you her favorite directing and acting techniques, sometimes an excuse for you to binge watch Sandra Bullock's entire cinematography. You would fill her inbox with emails of dream roles, she would fill yours with links to acting classes if the number of emails in her inbox from you exceeded 1,000.

She was your best friend.

You missed her.

If you had to pinpoint the time when she started drifting away, it was right after you landed your breakout role of Aerin Fey in the movie Pillars, which became a boxoffice hit, making nearly three times the production cost in theaters. Soon, your portrayal of the multiversal anti hero was on billboards, had sequels and contracts signed, had custom dolls on toy store shelves. It was everything you wanted, seeing little girls inspired by you as you either walked down a red carpet or passed them in the grocery store. You loved signing autographs in the signature Agatha and you spent nights perfecting. You loved taking pictures with fans, almost equally as excited as they were, after all your dream was coming true.

All you wanted was to share these moments with your closest friend but soon Agatha started only filling the manager role in your life. No longer did she appear at your door bearing tubs of ice cream to celebrate a role you had been offered, no longer did she let you cry when you lost a role you had been desperate for. Your texts and emails became dry, only notifying you of roles she had sent your portfolio in for or sending you calender invites for interviews and late night show appearances.

All this was swirling in your head as you scrolled through your old texts with Agatha, your eyes becoming watery as you went further into the messages. You sat in your living room on your large couch, a purchase Agatha practically had to force you to confirm. You still didn't understand why you needed such a large couch or house for that matter, as you were the only one living in the space. It was damn comfortable though. You let yourself sink into the cushions, your mind running wild with theories as to why Agatha suddenly cut your friendship off. Sure, you two would keep a professional appearance when seen together on the carpet but you were absolutely certain people noticed the tense atmosphere between you.

"Bitch if you don't answer this door right now I'm going to assume you're dead and call every TMZ reporter here!"

The voice of your co-star turned friend Wanda Maximoff interupted your self pity episode, making you realize that the pounding you had subconsciously been hearing wasn't a sad theme song your mind created for you. No, it was the furious knocking of the red head. You reluctantly got out of your comfy spot, slightly taking Wanda's threat seriously. You opened your door, revealing your friend holding a folder with Pillar's studio name printed on the side and a bottle of champagne. You nodded to the bottle.

"Where's the rest?"

Wanda laughed, nudging her way into your home, bumping your shoulder with hers.

"Oh so it's that kind of day."

Wanda took her place on your couch, setting the bottle on the coffee table and crossing her legs with the folder in her lap. She patted the spot next to her on your couch, a smile wide on her face.

"Now come on, we have to make sure we know the answers to questions and what not to answer!"

You groaned at the reminder of your TV appearance tomorrow. Which also meant enduring the new cold demeanor of your be-manager. Wanda seemed to read your face as you made your way to sit back on the couch. She patted your knee once you were sat, her face a mix of pity and a bit of anger for your sadness.

"Is Agatha still acting weird?"

You nodded while staying silent, not wanting to cry in front of one of your only real friends. Not yet at least.

"God that's so stupid honestly. The least she could do is tell you what's going on instead of acting like a fourth grader who's favorite swing is being used during recess. I know you love her Y/N, I'm sorry."

You both laughed and choked at Wanda's words.

She was right, you loved Agatha. You've loved her since the first time you met her and your feelings only grew and intensified as your partnership continued throughout the years.

But you'd never say it outloud. That would make it real. And if it was real, that meant the woman you loved hated you and you had no idea why.

Agatha was leaning against the wall of your dressing room, her eyes glued to her phone as she typed furiously. You watched her in the mirror as your hair stylist put the finishing touches on the style that was supposed to look effortless. Almost as if she could feel your stare, Agatha looked up from her phone to meet your eyes in the mirror. You felt heat rise up to your cheeks as your own eyes widened, standing up a little to quickly. Realizing once you were up that you didn't have a reason for such a reaction.

Wanda burst into the dressing room, her red dress sparkling in the light.

"They want us to walk on stage together, shall we?"

Wanda held out her elbow for you to hold on to, winking in an exaggerated way. Out of the corner of your eye, you noticed Agatha's intense glare at Wanda but decided that you weren't going to let your manager's weird behavior affect this interview. You hooked your arm through Wanda's, playing along.

"We shall!"

Agatha followed behind the two of you, her stare burning into the back of your neck as the two of you walked onto the stage, cuing the raging applause and cheers from the audience. Agatha stayed off-stage, watching with crossed arms and an expression that could take down the toughest of tough.

The lights were burning and bright as you and Wanda took a seat next to each other across from the interviewer. You immediately regretting your choice in seat as Agatha stood across from you in the wings, her stare like ice as it stuck to your skin. Taking a deep breath, you plastered on a wide smile as you were introduced. Purposefully ignoring Agatha, you focused on how the interviewer angeled her body towards Wanda, indictating who she would be asking a question to first.

"Ok, I got to say," Darcy Lewis, the host of this show, threw her hands in the air as if she was giving a confession, "I can't ask any questions about the movie until I get confirmation about something that's happened in your life recently, Wanda."

Wanda smirked, obviously understanding where Darcy was going, You, however, were confused, your eyes flickering between Darcy, Wanda, Agatha, and the audience, hating the feeling. Your smile stayed plastered on, not wanting to reveal your confusion. Wanda met your eyes and reached over to cover your hand with hers, her left hand on top almost purposefully. You looked down to see a beautiful ring with a braided band of gold set with a sparkling diamond of reasonable size.

"Oh my god!" You gasped out, grasping Wanda's hand and bringing it embarassingly close to your face. Wanda and Darcy laughed, the latter clapping as her vague question was answered in a hilarious way.

"I can't believe it's taken you this long to notice!" Wanda laughed out, tugging her hand back to marvel at her ring herself, "I've only been parading it around for a week!"

You flushed with embarassment, a real smile painting your lips as you covered your face with your hands. After the crowd calmed down, Wanda confirmed outloud what the ring symbolized.

"A little over a week ago, my long time partner, who I met on this set by the way, proposed to me in the park we had our first date. Oh, he was so nervous but I couldn't let him finish his speach I was so excited! Obviously I said yes."

You wanted to give your friend a giant hug but decided against climbing over the arms of the chairs, choosing to keep your dignity as you didn't want your dress to ride up too much.

Darcy continued with the interview, the air of the stage light and friendly as you and Wanda evaded questions and made jokes about being trapped in these roles until you're 90. You realized once the interview was almost over that you couldn't feel Agatha's stare on you anymore. Since you had been actively avoiding the spot she was standing in the whole time, you hadn't notice her slip away. A spark of anger lit in your chest as memories floated around your mind. What had you done that she deemed worthy enough to sever your relationship?

You were surprisingly thankful when the interview was over, everything becoming a blur as you made it back home. Wanda had a date with her fiance, Vision but told you that she wanted to get coffee the next morning. You already knew you would be needing that coffee, as you had a few pages of script to begin memorizing for a cameo scene you were doing for a spin-off show of Pillars.

You wanted to just curl up on your couch and binge watch old Disney movies but you forced yourself to walk in circles around your living room, script in hand as you acted out your scenes. A few hours in, you were getting frustrated. Your mind just wouldn't grasp the script, each line entering your mind quickly but leaving even quicker. You were about to learn how to use your fireplace just to burn the papers when your door shook with someone knocking. It was rapid, almost desperate and it sent a sense of urgency pooling in your gut. You practically ran to your door, afraid of what you would see on the other side. Did someone die? Oh god, hopefully Wanda and Vision didn't break up that would be awful-

The door swung open.

It was Agatha.

Her eyes were ablaze with an emotion you couldn't pin point, her hair was a mess but it only added to her beauty, and she was gripping her phone so hard in her hand that her knuckles were white.

You were frozen in the doorway, your eyes wide and your jaw slack. Agatha just stared back at you, her chest heaving as if she had ran all the way to your home. Blinking, you broke yourself from your trance, and against the voices in your head that sounded suspiciously like a specific redhead, stepped to the side to let Agatha in. She barged in, going to stand in front of the couch, arms crossed as she continued to stare at you. Wringing your hands, you decided you wanted to mend what was broken.

"I'm just practicing for the shoot in a week, would you help me? I can't seem to get-"

"Were you ever with Wanda?"

Her sudden question made you choke on your words and you were back to being frozen, the script falling dramatically from your hands. Agatha came to stand in front of you, her face inches from yours. Your tongue was heavy with shock and all you could do was shake your head in denial.

Why was Agatha asking this? Did she like Wanda? That would explain why she wouldn't be happy with you, as you had grown closer to the redhead throughout the years and Agatha didn't.

Something clicked in your mind, reversing your sinking stomach into nervous butterflies.

But if she liked Wanda, why would she be glaring at her? Unless, the person Agatha liked wasn't the now engaged redhead and was-

"Y/N, please, I need you to answer me."

Agatha voice contradicted her body language, her words broken and shaky, as if she was afraid of a potential answer. Her hands flexed in the postition of her crossed arms, as if she wanted to reach towards you. You took a deep breath, preparing your answer.

"Is this why you started avoiding me? Because you thought I was with Wanda? I've only ever been her friend, Agatha and we only grew as close as we are because you stopped talking to me! God, I thought you hated me!"

Agatha's eyes lost their iciness and filled with panic instead. Her hands shot out and grasped your arms.

"Hate? No, I love you! I though the giant annoucment at the interview would be that you were in a relationship with Wanda! I didn't want to ruin your relationship with her because of my feelings!."

You shrugged Agatha's hands off your arms and took a step back.

"So you ruined ours? All because you thought your feelings were unreciprocated?" Agatha's eyes lit up with hope at your words, "Wanda's been with Vision for years, all you had to do was open Google!" You had started to raise your voice towards the end, all your frustration being let out at once. Agatha shrugged sheepishly as she slowly stepped to once again be close to you.

"I didn't want to be right."

Agatha smiled nervously as she brushed a hair from your face.

"I didn't know what to do and I'm terribly sorry for how I acted. God, Y/N, it hurt seeing you with someone who wasn't me. I thought you just wanted to be friends. "

Her whispered apology melted away the ice that had been hardening your heart for protection and you reached up to cup her face in your hands. Agatha leaned into your touch, her eyes closing for a second before opening and almost blinding you with how much hope was shining towards you.

"I loved being your friend and it really hurt me when you took that away but," you smiled at Agatha, shifting to be even closer to your manager, "I would love to be even more."

Agatha smiled softly, her eyes saying everything her words couldn't. Her smile melted into a smirk as she leaned in, your hands falling from her face so your arms could wrap around her neck.

"I would really love to make up for lost time."

You barely had finished nodding before Agatha's lips crashed into yours, consuming you. Her hands now cradled your face as you kissed, her tongue battling with yours. She started walking, directing you towards the stairs, where the door to your bedroom taunted you with it being far. As the two of you stumbled up the stairs, laughter breaking the kiss, you felt Agatha tugging on your dress, the one you still hadn't changed out of. Soon, there was a trail of clothes leading to your bedroom and once you hit your bed, from the look in Agatha's eyes, you wouldn't be leaving it anytime soon.

i like to think that rindou is a man of many things.

he likes you, he likes ran sometimes, he likes music, and he also likes garlic bread -- the saltiness that comes with it always makes him moan a little more when munching on a piece and you're beside him begging for a bite too. he pulls his hand away before running to the other side of the room to finish his bread because this is his, not yours, and he tells you to go away with a pout. you laugh while flying a leg to his butt before heading off to complete your daily to-do list, but when you emerge from the shower you see two big pieces of garlic bread sitting in a tupperware on the kitchen counter. he isn't home, he's left for classes -- he told you after peeking a head into the shower and eyeing cheekily at your naked body and getting kicked out by you with a blush and there's also a sticky note on it when you shuffle closer to take a look -- finish it for me. i'm full -- yeah..... and you know your stupid boyfriend has never been a great liar too :3

rindou is a fan of cinematography. whatever christopher nolan, fight club or aesthetic movie that you feed him on netflix during movie night every friday, he'll devour it every single time. and he hugs you close when you fall asleep halfway through the movie because he thinks you are so cuddly when you're wearing his calvin klein hoodie in his 21°C bedroom and your nose is in his neck -- soft inhales and snores blowing against his skin and he smirks a little when you unconsciously hook a leg over his hip.

contrary to popular belief, rindou is actually a big afternoon napper. he really loves sleeping when it's still 2pm and hot outside after a nice shower, wearing his favourite thin cotton tshirt and he's waiting for his hair to dry and he just ... lays in bed and then accidentally doze off because it's just too comfortable for him. he loves catnapping with you too -- on the couch, in his bed, in your bed -- just having you lay on his forearm as you fall asleep together feels so intimate and loving to him and he can't help but love you a little more when you wake up and look at him drowsily with half open eyelids, some stray hair sticking to your face and you've got some sleep marks indented on your left arm. he wipes your hair away for you, your face sticky against his palm from the heat, and rindou still pulls your body close by your thighs to press a sweet kiss on the corners of your lips. "hi." "hi..."

rindou was a chubby kid when he was younger -- paired with the little glasses on his nose, he's gotten bullied before for it. but after he's hit puberty at the age of 14 and has easy access to gym equipments, rindou trains whenever he can. there's a few stretch marks on his stomach and biceps and you know he's a little sensitive to them -- it's just there ever since he started training, he doesn't really know how it came to be, and he doesn't know how to make it go away either. though he can't help but get so shy and blushy before pressing a little kiss to your neck when you touch on them and smooch on them a little. "they're you, rin. they're a part of you." and you run your palm over the areas warmly while he purrs in your neck like a little cat.

he also adores it when you keep him on track for his diet. like the extra larva cake that ran had bought last night taunting him in the fridge and you push past his body to snatch it away from his sight before rindou can act on his desires. you're always there, and every time when this happens you always give him a scoop though -- just one scoop of the dessert after he flashes you some look of longing and you kiss his cheek with a mouthful of chocolate, "go now." he smirks while grabbing his gym bag off the rack, the bottle of his protein shake that you made for him earlier hanging off his pointer. "see you." and he leaves for his Sunday morning gym session with a giddy smile and a rattling, itchy heart.

rindou is a bit possessive. he likes to think that he isn't the over-protective boyfriend that most girls hate in guys -- he's just a little territorial when it comes to you. which is why he doesn't tell his friends about you despite their curious asks about his girl -- though everyone knows haitani rindou has a girlfriend, nobody knows who she is. and people had only found out how serious he is about you when some guy in tokyo manji had crossed his boundaries. he'd just joined the gang -- he isn't familiar with the people and the customs, but so many wants to know just who haitani rindou really is when provoked. and some idiot just goes up and pokes a finger into rindou's shoulder, talking down on him like he isn't the same guy who'd went to juvie with his brother for beating a man to death, and rindou isn't fazed at all by it at first. he's unresponsive to the guy's taunts, smirking when he talks big to rindou, but he finds himself getting irritated when he starts yapping about his girlfriend. "ah, my chick's actually really annoying, so i'm thinking of dumping her. you got any recommendations for me? i like sweet girls. maybe yours would do." rindou had punched the soul out of that man after grabbing his collar, daring him to say it again (he really did, and they get into a violent fight, and rindou won). but he gets suspended for a month because mikey is serious about his no-infighting rule, even though it wasn't even rindou's fault at all, and you'd gotten so mad at this asshole called sano manjirou after you find out the reason why your boyfriend had came over to your house with a busted lip and a big bruise to his cheek and he tells you that he won't be any attending gang meetings for now; that he'll be taking you to kyoto this saturday for a quick trip since he's freed up his weekends.

you stomp over to musashi shrine the next time ran tells you he'll be heading out to a meeting, and you point a long finger in mikey's face, "apologise to rindou." they'd all looked at you like you were some crazy woman when you'd entered, and an even crazier one when you mention the younger haitani's given name from your mouth like he's some close relative to you. "he's done nothing wrong. and where's the asshole that talked about me? tell him to come say it to my face." and draken laughs at it. so this is rindou's secret girlfriend. you frown in mikey's face to teach his men better, and he ends up saying sorry to you instead with a flush to his cheeks because he still holds a petty grudge against rindou for accidentally stepping on a packet of his unopened taiyaki that had fell to the floor (rindou wasn't wearing his glasses... hence the accident...) and you find out later that the guy who'd talked smack about you earlier was still in the hospital from his injuries. rindou drags you to the park later and sits with you at the swing. "everyone knows who you are now." he pouts silently, the possessiveness going hard on him (he just wants his pretty girl all to himself) and you pout too after a little while. "i want them to know me though." you murmur, and it's as if a switch had went off in rindou's head. he realises many things that night, and after he's walked you home he goes back and posts a picture of you and him hugging in bed (you're sleeping, your face is a little covered by his arms, but he thinks this will do for now) on his instagram later that night. stink -- he captions, he tags you, and he disables his comments.

you like drawing and doodling on rindou's untattooed arm when you're bored, and he watches you do it on his skin every single time with a lovesick gaze. sometimes it's a few smiley faces, other times some flowers (roses, bellflowers, orchids), and today you draw a bunch of black on the area just a little below his pulse that he cannot for the love of his life figure out what it is. he nudges your cheek with his nose after giving up and you hum. "what's that?" you simply smile, "my name and your name together. look closer." and he sees it all when he leans in next to your face -- your kanji and his kanji jumbled together in your pretty fine handwriting. from far it may seem like there's just a very huge mole on his wrist, but if one were to look closer, he thinks it's the prettiest thing they can ever see in their life (next to you). rindou doesn't let you wipe the ink off his skin later. he leaves your house that evening with a lame excuse of needing to get some errands for his mother because he'd forgotten despite your little whines and fits of telling him to stay, "it's your birthday, rin! i was gonna bring you somewhere..." you pout and he nods with a kiss to your cheek, telling you he'll be back soon and he rushes over to a friend's to ask for a favour.

"i'm closed for the day, rindou." his friend blinks, counting the stacks of cash in his hands and rindou scratches on his scalp. "i'll pay you upfront, in cash. just need to get this tattooed real quick."

rindou snaps a photo of it when it's done -- the tattoo fine-lined, fresh and red, and his skin is a little swollen, but it's pretty, and he sends it to you.

My favorite things about this movie:

the INCREDIBLE acting, especially by aelm bhumibhat who's slowly becoming one of the best & most powerful thai actors in my eyes. ud awat & pae arak also ate this up bruh.

the directing & cinematography are so so so good, they remind me of p'nuchie anucha & apichatpong weerasethakul and I mean that in the best way.

this story is so impactful & I know I will remember it for years to come. this movie didn't go AT ALL where I thought it would at first, and I'm grateful because the last 30 minutes made it become a favorite for me.

super niche but this whole cast is crazy & I simply adore who they got to sign on this movie, like... pae arak??? that's insane, like literally insane. ud awat showed his whole ass twice & frankly? slay. the cast is too fucking good but that's just a me point bc you probably don't know them lol.

Everything goes wrong for Freya Ula when she leaves her simple life as a fisherwoman to get engaged overseas. Her ship gets wrecked, she finds out her dad's been hiding secrets from her for her whole life, and, oh, she gets framed for a terrorist attack. Wait, WHAT!? After the city's greatest detective is attacked and disappears before she could consult with him, Frey has to enlist the help of his kid and her would-be fiancée to find out who framed her and clear her name. If only Crow was half as good a detective their dad was supposed to be.

Ghosts of past tragedies haunt the town of Kavo after decades of neglect. Fantastical creatures desiring nothing but fear and destruction hide in invisible tears in reality. Gangs and the police are at constant war with one another, there's a shapeshifting monster running amok, and the mayor's assistant suddenly wants a disabled orphan kicked to the streets. A year ago, Gene was discovered in the forest on the outskirts of town, half dead, amnesiac, and unable to even speak the local language. As he had nowhere to go, he was brought to the orphanage of Kavo for a place to stay. Now Caspar, the assistant of the mayor and the man who funds the orphanage, wants him kicked out. When Gene's left to the cold, cruel streets of Kavo on his own, he has to navigate through a town ravaged by decades of neglect and intrigue. Has the corruption truly been purged from the government? Why are godly forces active in Kavo, a small town in a backwater country? And most importantly--will Gene survive?

❧ Has two "main plots" going on simultaneously; technically three ❧ I periodically give the reader updated "character guides" ❧ like they get more recent plot info added kinda like a red-string board to keep you, the audience, up-to-date with info you might've otherwise missed ❧ I think it's really cool and people seem to enjoy it ❧ I know it seems like a lot but please give it a chance

❧ I've literally plotted out pretty much the entirety of the first and second books, and know most of how book 3 will go, yet there's very little out for the current version of the story ❧ part of that is because I'm paused on the 3rd draft

❧ There's lots of timeskips throughout the first two books, but they're mostly to age up the protagonists! Gene, the MC, starts the series at 7. I promise it's not a kid's story though.

❧ The "secondary MC", Nikolai, is the police chief investigating magical stuff going on at the same time. They tie in with the main story involving Gene, though won't appear to for a long while.

❧ The "golden child" series I love more than SaS; however it's on hiatus because I promised people to work on SaS first and SaS is more popular as a romance-focused story. :/ ❧ I would never be salty about that.

I have decided with my bestie to watch all the Disney movies in chronological order and what better pairing than to subject tumblr to my thoughts about them. Obviously we aren't gonna watch every single movie that Disney owns so we'll be somewhat subjective on what counts as an official animated feature film. And will probably skip some of the racist ones and maybe some sequels. But I digress.

Dumbo (1941)

Preface: movie number two with the “sorry for being racist” warning.

Pros:

I do genuinely miss when movies had credits before them. It feels so nostalgic but also respectful of all the people who worked on the movie and we’ve lost that in favor of only caring about the actors.

The scene at the beginning of all the baby animals being delivered by the storks is one of the more delightful things I have ever seen.

The animation is cute in a new way, I don’t know enough about art to put my finger on exactly what’s different but it’s got more of an adorable quality to it, and less of that 1930s creepy quality

A stork voiced by Sterling Holloway!! (beloved voice actor best known for Winnie the Pooh)

Cons

Like 90% of the characters in his movie are MEAN. The ringmaster is mean, the other elephants are mean, the circus attendees are mean, the crows are mean, the clowns are mean. My sensitive heart was not built to withstand a bunch of characters being mean to a crying baby elephant. Genuinely upsetting.

There is a drunken hallucination scene of dancing elephants that goes on for like 8 minutes and has nothing to do with anything.

The crows are as racist as I remembered and then some. The irony of writing a movie about how awful it is to be mean to someone because they’re different (Dumbo with his big ears) but then still having a super racist caricatures within that movie is Joanne Rowling levels of not understanding the point of your own story.

Verdict: Mostly just kind of boring. It’s not terrible but it’s not really good either.

Fantasia (1940)

Preface: This is the first of the handful of movies with the “sorry for being racist” content warning before it, however the version streaming on Disney+ has actually removed the offending scene (a truly horrendous depiction of a black centaur).

Pros:

I was not looking forward to this one. I remembered from childhood that it was very weird and boring. And here’s the thing, to a child it would probably still be weird and boring. But the purpose of this feature (which I had not remembered) was to be a giant love letter to MUSIC. It was a bold and creative idea to use animation, a still somewhat new art form, to visually display the way music makes you feel and to reimagine the stories being told in the pieces. And unlike child me, adult me has a degree in classical music and generally nerds out a whole lot over music so unexpectedly this movie was so right up my alley

Visually stunning. The thought of this being a showcase for what animation can do since it was still somewhat new in cinematography, is very cool.

The music is beautiful, and even without my education I think I would have recognized most of these pieces which gives it a familiar feel. The Nutcracker Suite is a personal favourite and it’s beautifully done by the Philadelphia Orchestra.

The animation really does match the music in a pretty magical way – during the dinosaur chapter where the music is 20th century modern (brash and bombastic) the animation is much harsher with dark colours and sharp edges, vs the animation in the segment about Greek myths set to Romantic era Beethoven, which is softer and pastel.

Cons:

It’s too long. Over 2 hours, which is very lengthy considering the concept. In parts my attention drifted. But there is an actual intermission with a title card for it and everything so you can break it up neatly into two, like we did.

The chapter depicting the evolution and then extinction of the dinosaurs is the least entertaining in my opinion and it drags on, despite Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring being a messy neoclassical masterpiece.

Obviously because of what it is, there isn’t a larger story, which makes it just sort of an odd venture.

DINOSAUR SLANDER. This con is mostly a joke but there is a part where the narrator goes on for like 7 minutes about how dumb dinosaurs were which just feels mean.

Verdict: Better than I remembered or expected! If you do not like classical music it might not be for you but your adult self might like this one more than your kid self did.

Pinocchio (1940)

Pros:

I love an aminated movies opening with a book, and someone telling us the story. Also loved that in the opening scene that shows Pinocchio in book form, books of Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan are also in the shot, which Disney hadn’t yet made movies for

Patches on clothing are such an interesting staple of old cartoons, from a bygone era when people used to actually repair their clothes. I don’t know if that counts as a pro of this particular movie but it’s a thought I had

Figaro the cat is such a hater which is so perfectly on brand for cats

More impressive advances in animation – I don’t know how they made the Blue Fairy transparent but it’s very cool

Cons:

Despite the transparent Blue Fairy, in general the animation in this movie doesn’t have the same magic to it that some others do. It feels sort of cheap and uninspired, I can’t explain it but it’s missing something. Snow White was beautiful, the animation in this one is kind of bland

Pets are a thing that exist in this universe - Geppetto has a cat and a fish - but then there's randomly a fox and a cat (both the size of humans) walking around in clothing as if they are people when every other character is human

Stromboli is supposed to be Italian I think but his animation and character feels deeply racist in a way I can’t quite put my finger on. He is referred to at one point as the G slur so I’m not sure if maybe he’s meant to be Roma? He feels like a weird mix of anti-Jewish and anti-Arab stereotypes even though I don’t think he’s supposed to be either. It’s highly uncomfortable

I feel like we’ve all Mandela-effect-ed ourselves about Pinocchio and his growing nose. I remembered it being a big part of the plot but it’s literally one small scene about halfway through and then it never happens again

Pleasure Island is incredibly creepy and the scene where boys are turning into donkeys is super unsettling. Perhaps that should be a pro since it was probably supposed to be unsettling, but it’s a con for me because I did not enjoy it

How is Geppetto alive in inside a whale. I know it’s a cartoon and I know it’s based on an old story but STILL. Also Pinocchio is totally fine just like hanging out at the bottom of the ocean for like 25 minutes (because he’s made of wood and isn’t really alive yet), but then somehow at the end of the scene he drowns to death in a puddle? Make it make sense

The plot is … weird. It’s just weird. It feels like a combination of about 4 different stories – the creation of Pinocchio, falling in with Stromboli and the puppet show, going to Pleasure Island, and rescuing Geppetto from the whale all feel like separate stories that come one after another but don’t really relate to each other that much, and the tone of the movie also changes significantly with each one in a way that is not cohesive

At the end of the movie there’s still a whole island of enslaved, kidnapped donkey children that are just never mentioned again so … dunno what to do with that

Verdict: Weird. Very, very weird, and not in a good way. I did not remember from childhood how genuinely strange this story is.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937)

Pros:

The animation is beautiful. I got weirdly emotional thinking about people in 1937 seeing this for the first time, how mind-blowing it must have been. I know almost nothing about animation but I was genuinely impressed with the techniques used for movement, considering how old this is and how new the medium was. Also the movement of people’s hands and faces is so similar to other cartoons of the same era (I’m thinking Betty Boop but also others) which was kind of cool to see

Weirdly nostalgic in a way I wasn’t expecting, there are several songs I had in the back of my mind but had totally forgotten were from Snow White – Whistle While You Work and the song the Prince sings

The evil queen is so fucking cunty I was flabbergasted. I love her. More cunty Disney villains please (also, ICONIC scene where her cape flows as she runs down a spiral staircase. I was obsessed with that as a kid and the fluidity of the animation is incredible for the time)

I loved how melodic it all was, the sound of footsteps down the stairs or the dwarves falling down all to the beat of the musical score made the whole thing flow so nicely. I miss when movies did this

Cons:

Obligatory note that you shouldn’t kiss strangers in comas

The ending is kind of a bummer, I forgot she leaves the dwarves who love her for some guy she met 10 minutes ago. But alas, I guess that’s how the fairy tale went

Adriana Caselotti’s squeaky operatic soprano is iconic, but not particularly pleasant to listen to

Verdict: Delightful. Truly delightful. Obviously not a new or innovative story but it was very nostalgic and I enjoyed it much more than I was expecting.

honestly one of the most stand-out aspects of maxton hall (aside from cinematography, acting, plot, etc.) were the nuanced relationships for me.

specifically lydia and james’s sibling relationship, which i absolutely ADORED.

it felt so real because yes they absolutely loved and cared for each other but they were both still people w/ flaws, desires, wants, and i loved how the show touched on the fact that just because you care about someone a lot doesn’t mean you’ll never be angry w/ them at one point or another & what rlly got me was the fact that so much of their issues stemmed from their father, of course, but from the way they both had the one thing the other wanted.

lydia wanted her business, her credit. but most of all, she simply wanted her father to CHOOSE her w/o argument. to take HER out for the day or allow her to do the press conference or simply, allow her to lead and finish what SHE started.

while she doesn’t get that, she has what james wants and that’s the lack of heavy responsibility & expectations on her shoulders.

it’s truly tragic. while everyone expects so little of her, everyone expects too much of james and they’re both essentially screwed over.

so while she is sadly forced to bear very little for the business, EVERYTHING is placed on james by his father when it’s the last thing he wants. he doesn’t want to be the ceo of business he doesn’t rlly care THAT much abt, he doesn’t want to do what everyone says like a puppet. he wants to explore his true desires, learn who he is and love who he WANTS to love.

it’s kinda like lydia’s passions are clipped wings so they can’t take off and james’s are caged away so they have a chance to be free and explore.

Book Carmilla vs Adaptations (SPOILERS)

Here are a few 'interesting' adaptations. I like some of them for their own merits, but mostly dislike them as Carmilla adaptations for the below reasons, with some notable exceptions: Vampyr: The Dream of Allan Gray (1932 film): The first Carmilla inspired movie, although it keeps almost NOTHING from the novella except 'female vampire'. In this case, a creepy old lady rather than a charming young lesbian. This is a really moody, slow, acid trip of a film though, a treat for fans of vintage vampire film. (3/10) Hammer Karnstein Trilogy: The Vampire Lovers is the gayest and most book-accurate. Carmilla still kisses/seduces men before killing them, boo. The second one her identically-named reincarnation is blonde and has sex with / falls in love with a man booooooo. She's not in the third one at all. It's all very 70's and nowhere near queer enough, but at least we got the incomparable Ingrid Pitt in the first movie. 5/10. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust: 'Carmilla' shows up as a surprise third act villain. She's an elegant and imposing vampire queen with a castle called "Cjethe" and the Vampire King offed her previously for being A Bit Too Extra. She's... Bathory. She's Elizabeth Bathory, right down to the name of her historical castle, the elaborate gowns and the blood-bathing. Bathory in Castlevania Nocturne even looks a lot like this one. Cool scary vampire lady, but Carmilla In Name Only. 4/10 Castlevania (Games): She's fine here, but mostly just kind of a big Dracula groupie like most of the other non-Dracula vampires. Often depicting as a flying skull or mask crying bloody tears, with optional succubus-like figure reclining on top of it. Cool. Rondo of Blood has her appear together with a ninja vampire Laura with bunny ears because why the hell not. 6/10 Castlevania (Netflix show): Baddass, angry Karen. She's amazing in the first season when she's scheming against Dracula, but after that she just sort of sits on her butt sipping wine and griping about men for a whole season until Isaac storms her castle. A cool character but not a great Carmilla, because Carmilla for me is defined by how much she loves women, not how much she hates men. Still amazing voice work by Jaime Murray though and her last stand was insanely baddass. 7/10

Carmilla Web Series / Movie: My favorite adaptation. It's obviously playing waaaay fast and loose with the canon and reframing her as a charming antihero in a zany urban fantasy, but there's deep current of love for the source material, especially in the movie. Natasha Negovanlis has charisma off the charts and the Hollstein romance is adorable. This Carmilla might be a black-leather-wearing snarky millenial goth with a Canadian accent, but as the show goes on it peels back layer after layer of the romantic, poetic, wistful, world-weary immortal hinted at by the novella. This show redeems LeFanu's lovelorn villain in all the best ways. 10/10. 2019 movie / Styria movie: I still haven't seen these, have heard good things about the gothic cinematography on the most recent one but not good things about the rest of it. The trailer looked moody and pretty though, I may watch it at some point.

Okay so here is my personal review for venom 3 (no professional review, merely rambling thoughts).

Spoilers down below:

I have mixed feelings about this one. It's not the best one of the trilogy. Movie bros hate it but it's a venom movie, what the hell did you expect, dude? I have my issues with it but I enjoyed it more than the average person.

Pros:

-I like the action. It was tense and the first two acts were creative with the concept of Venom not being able to transform entirely.

- I liked the trashy jokes as did I in all the other movies.

-The xenophages were amazing, I loved them. Every POV shot of them and every time we saw how agressively they switched into kill-mode as soon as they found Venom was blood chilling. *Muah, chefs kiss* They were truly terrifying and brutal and I want to see more.

-I liked some of the film making and cinematography.

-Venom's face was so expressive in this one and I couldn't help but laugh and melt from adorableness.

Cons:

-While I totally understand and support killing off your favorites, the way they did it with venom rubbed me the wrong way. It wasn't emotional enough and Eddie didn't seem to be as wrecked by it as he should have. He should have screamed and cried out for him, for heavens sake!

- Also it felt a little too queerbaity but I don't know how much was from the script and how much was cut. It feels like a lot of gayness had been cut. For example the helicopter scene? It definitely feels like there was an "I love you" that had been removed after the longing stares.

- Some of the choices were questionable. The dance montage was non-sensical. Venom was terrified to be found by the xenophages that he avoided transforming at all cost. Why would he make an exception because he really wants to dance? I know, it was Dancing Queen by ABBA and he's gay but he could dance by controlling Eddie's body or just dance with his tentacles.

-I also didn't care about the scientist plot. When you have these two silly idiots and their silly road trip story I don't want that to be interrupted by scientist drama.

Other points I have that were neither pro nor cons and are merely just ranting of my tiny human brain:

-Christmas scientist lady and blonde scientist lady are lesbians, you cannot tell me otherwise.

-I adore that the Xenophages are called "she". We stan a terrifying monster hunter queen. I support women's rights and women's wrongs.

- Now that I have seen so many symbiotes I can confidentially say that Venom is the prettiest one. Clean skin? Check. Big eyes? Check. Symmetrical face? Check. A true beauty in every way.

-Eddie wears his Hawaiian shirt for 75% of the movie and this is the best idea they every could have done.

Overall I enjoyed myself and I was entertained which is the only thing you need from the Venom movies but it's far from the best of the trilogy and it left me wanting more from what we have got. The film bros hate it and I never want to be associated with film bros so I will loudly say that I liked the movie. I also have an alternate version of the movie franchise in my mind that follows some of the same plots but changes it so every movie would actually be good. If you want to hear more of that feel free to tell me and you might motivate me in writing a VERY LONG fanfiction or merely ramble everything into one big textpost (in my head it would be 5 movies instead of 3)

he still actively pursues cinematography and gets you to star in his little films.

He keeps mental tabs on people you interact with, he won't follow them around or anything, but he remembers things about them.. their name, age, how you know them, their home address, etc.

he has to make sure you're safe, it's a dangerous world out there yk.

he never ever talks to you about his emotions, or how he feels, unless you ask him directly. but all you'll get in return is:

"Honey, I'm alright.. really."

"I'm fine, how are you though?"

"Can we talk about this later?"

he feels that his problems are his own to deal with and that he shouldn't bother you with them.

when you two fight for whatever reason, (which rarely happens because he purposely goes out of his way to avoid making you upset) he has a habit of gaslighting you

he'll say things along the lines of:

"I understand but.."

"I never said that.."

"we talked about this.."

he only really manipulates/gaslights you when he's genuinely worried you may leave, (even if you aren't actually going to) he uses it as a way to make sure you stay.

for him, there is no stopping point unless knows 100% that you're gonna stay.

He will literally fall to his knees, and break down in (fake) tears in a public area and BEG you to stay with him.

He doesn't get embarrassed by it because he knows it's "necessary"

If an argument is getting too heated, he may bring up your ex-partner(s), or people you just went on dates with before you two got together, even if it didn't go any further than that. Especially if you didn't tell him about them previously.

Don't ask him how he knows about them, he'll immediately take that chance to shift the blame onto you, asking why you didn't tell him about them beforehand if you had told him about them earlier, he wouldn't have had to go digging to find out about them.

when he does that, It's really just him grasping for straws, usually in an attempt to change the subject.

If you couldn't already tell he's a smooth talker, not just in a manipulative way.

he is such a flirt, there's rarely a conversation between the two of you where he doesn't slip in a little flirting, whether you pick up on it or not.

He's sneaky like that

Since we're on the topic of him being sneaky, he's a bit of a thief.. he'll steal your things and carry them with him whenever he leaves you for more than one day at a time.

that old T-shirt you haven't worn in a year that was sitting in the back of your closet collecting dust? yeah, that's his now.

If you collect little trinkets, you'll definitely have to buy a lot more of them because he'll steal them and hide them away in the glove compartment of his truck.

He doesn't steal with malicious intent, he'll return them eventually (except for the trinkets) he just feels like he needs something of yours, other than pictures to be close to you when he can't be, yk?

honestly, he's not very big on physical touch. he does enjoy having little intimate moments with you, like cuddling or playing with your hair, but other than that.. he's never one to initiate it. unless of course he really needs your touch.
