Experience: I've been roleplaying since 2009, and on Tumblr since 2011. I am still fairly new to this RPC (About 7-8 months now?) but not new to rp'ing itself! I've been in many fandoms and rp groups during my time on here, and my main blog is a collection of my muses to date (my most active and cherished ones, actually).

Preferred roleplay type: Anything goes by me, but I prefer crackier, shorter styles of roleplay. However, I will not say no to multi para/novella type rp's (they will take longer for me to answer though!) I also love angst, fluff, and everything in between and am a huge shipper.

Pet peeves & dealbreakers: Anything that's in my rules that I won't touch with a ten foot pole, along with the basics (godmodding, forced shipping, etc etc.) I also don't like people who are into drama and live for callout posts/reblogs, especially if they are not serious in nature or something that could have been handled privately via ooc communication. Unless the person is legitimately dangerous (aka a known pedo/groomer/abuser, etc. I do not give a rat's ass what people do with fiction and will block shit I hate like a normal person. Leave me out of it. Also: Do not bring me drama involving people who have changed/are in the process of changing, and do not dictate who I follow/don't follow. I will make my own decisions with my own judgment because I am an adult. I am far too old for this shit and have too much irl bullshit to deal with as it is.

Have you ever written a canon muse that you first thought of ‘meh’ when they appeared in their canon show/movie/book?

Hm. I want to say definitely, I'm sure I remember doing that... but it took me a while to actually place any characters who match that definition. I think a couple of main examples would have to be, firstly, Janja (Lion Guard), who I played on one site for a little bit; I hadn't found him a compelling character at all when I'd watched the show, but decided to try him there for whatever reason and found him surprisingly fun to write as.

The other would probably be Flutt.ershy (ML.P). I mean, granted, I kinda first thought "meh" about the entire show when I first learned about it and only started watching it because someone told me that I was most like Twilight out of the cast so I got curious; but I know Flutt.ershy took me longer to warm up to than any of the others. Then at some point she abruptly grew on me (was it because of a certain episode that made me like her more? I honestly don't remember) and - after previously only having written her Discord-corrupted mean version as a joke character once - I played as her on several sites in rapid succession because of that!

Who is your favorite OC?

Of my own OCs... I think I know who everyone's probably expecting me to say, since Lauren's the only OC I have on this blog. But honestly I think the answer has to be Cinnamon, from my doggie characters story idea. Cutie little mail delivery puppy who's super serious about her job but also a big sweetheart, I just love her so much :D

Have you ever developed a ship based on writing with a certain other character / mun?

Oh, for sure. I know for just one example, Margo / Antonio (Desp.icable Me) was one. I started Margo's blog absolutely convinced that I was never going to play any such relationship between the two after the way he ditched her in canon... and yet, interacting with this one Antonio roleplayer, bouncing them off each other, I just really came to love the dynamic we were building; and by the time she reached the point of forgiving him when he was genuinely regretful, I was fully on board shipping it! (Albeit only with that one mun; writing with anyone else who portrayed the character would definitely have had to start from step one all over again.)

I mean, come to think of it, that was where my absolute OTP Patch/Angel ship came from too! I'd never even considered the characters together before they began bouncing off each other with Patch's first player on that one site; but even though I was still VERY much a RPing newbie at the time, and I would cringe to look back at those posts now, every interaction the two of them had made me fall in love with them as a pair. Thirteen-and-a-half years later I'm still shipping them, so you could say it definitely left an impression on me! xD

Okay, I actually have a serious question. I'm working on making a new blog for Dmitry since i think the lack of updated aesthetics here might in fact be keeping people from interacting. There's also the fact that I've been focusing on other things rather than actively seeking out interactions like I intend to do, but that's not the point.

Anyway, as I work on the new blog setup and especially the aesthetics and graphics of it, I was wondering a few things concerning accessibility in particular.

I'd greatly appreciate input on this, as disability inclusion is very important to me.

Font options

Are tumblr's default font options for text posts accessible to low-vision users and users who rely on screen readers? i'm particularly thinking of the small font option and the colored text options, as well as the chat font:

I am aware that fancy unicode symbol "text" doesn't parse well with screen-readers and, from my own experience, can be difficult to read. I'm strictly referring to whatever text formatting can be done using Tumblr's built-in text editor and regular keyboard usage. I often write from my phone, so I'm aware of some readability issues with some formatting options people use (like extra spacing and indents), both in text posts and in outlinks such as carrd documents and the like.

Images

When it comes to graphics like on pinned posts and promo posts, or the header graphics people use in replies: is this a problem for screen readers? Additionally, for icon and gif usage in replies, how should alt-text address these?

Information Pages and Outlinks

I'll be real, most carrd pages and google docs I've seen are terrible in terms of accessibility. I flat-out won't write with people whose pages I can't read for this reason — if it won't open on my phone or it's micro-sized on my huge laptop screen, I won't bother. I'm very partial to Tumblr's own custom theme options, which allow pages to be added: it doesn't rely on third parties, you can format with HTML tags, it's always there, and it's neat and easy to link to. I intend to write my information pages on the custom theme most likely, but I'm wondering if there's been issues with opening those links. For example, would it be better to have a mobile version of the links where the information is on separate posts that can be navigated to? I don't know, just brainstorming here a little.

Bottom Line

As a roleplayer, how can I make my content more accessible for users —particularly visually impaired, but anyone's welcome to chip in— and what are common problems you've spotted in this regard?

689803029405401088 I know that was going to be your last reply, and I'm not going to reply again either, because this is just going to go around in circles. But I want to add my input, because there are some things here I'm a little iffy about.

Some of the commenters mentioned people who don't roleplay at all. I think it's valid to be frustrated by that. I've seen people make five, ten, fifteen blogs, one after the other across months, across years, and literally never make a roleplay post. Ever. I'm not exaggerating here, sadly. And if they literally never roleplay, it's not a matter of "when" they roleplay. Because they never will. That can be a huge muse killer. It does make me wonder why people label themselves as roleplayers when they're only here to post like a fandom blog, when writing stuff comes implicit in the word "roleplaying". It's natural to expect a roleplayer to write something, anything. When someone writes literally zero words, and only posts fandom content unrelated to roleplaying, muse headcanons, etc, it's natural to wonder why they aren't a fandom blog instead. It's great to be into a character, but it doesn't always mean someone wants to roleplay them.

Personally, I'm a low-activity blog who has waited months, and years, for partners to reply IC and OOC. But I also want people who will, at some point, produce something. I can do a little, but I can't do zero. I'm a little hurt that this is being considered "possessive", which has such a huge negative connotation. People can roleplay one week an entire year and I'll be happy, but there is a huge difference between getting something and getting nothing. Not even being given the courtesy of knowing this will happen beforehand so I can avoid someone is crummy.

Roleplaying is roleplaying. Unless someone's personality makes a mess of things, it's fun and no-pressure no matter what level you're on, how you approach it, or what your style is. I grew up on proboards, gaia online, and other PBP forums, I know what roleplay was like (and still is like, on a few forums). But the whole "one-liners with asterisk actions" is not the only way to roleplay. Remember, a lot of roleplay communities separate roleplaying by illiterate, semi-literate (gaia online tended to fit those two styles), literate, advanced literate, and novella. All are acceptable. I thought it was strange how in your ask, you seemed to separate "serious" roleplayers (advanced literate, novella, long-term I guess?) from "the public/indie rpc", when those "serious" roleplayers are a part of that public/indie rpc. They're all roleplayers. We're all using the same aggregating websites to find partners and share our muses. Certain communities may have more of a bias towards certain roleplaying styles, like tumblr with frequent muse changeover and shorter threads, but it doesn't make the other styles less valid. Elsewhere, the way people approach things here are considered unpopular.

You seem to have conflated people who want to see any kind of roleplay activity, even if it's just a post or two every now and again, with people who are asking someone to post every week, or x times within a certain time frame, like, "hut hut hut, post or else". That isn't the case, at least for anyone who isn't a dick. I've waited enormous stretches of time for my partners to give replies, and I'm low-activity myself (as much as "low activity" feels like a dirty word, with social media insisting you have to be online and creating things all the time). I know that some people have more free time than others, and I'm sure many other people know this, too. This does mean, though, if I don't have tons of free time myself, I'm going to spend that precious free time interacting with people who are as guaranteed as possible to actually roleplay, and who show signs of that intention in some way.

People judge others based on the info they're provided with. People notice context clues, and they need some kind of indication. Maybe you have a bunch of long standing blogs, but the problem comes when people don't know that. If all someone ever sees is the short lived ones, because you never mention the long standing ones (for example), link to them, etc, they can't be expected to stick around because the information currently available to them is telling them something else. They shouldn't be expected to draw conclusions based on a lack of info. (So that's another reason it's good to communicate. "I keep both experimental muses and long-term muses", for example, says a lot without being lengthy or too revealing.)

Most people who want longer-term, consistent interactions really try to avoid short-term roleplayers, and not control people. If someone is a long-term roleplayer, it can actually be scary to describe what they're looking for in their rules. If someone says they only follow older blogs with more established muses in their rules, they're often attacked and told, "lol this is a hobby not a jobby are we supposed to fill out a CV while we're at it?". This is a hobby, yeah, and people who like longer-term things know that, so that kind of reception hurts a lot. Like I said above, "roleplaying" encompasses a lot of roleplaying types. There are so many kinds. Nobody is disagreeing that roleplay isn't for fun. And a lot of people HAVE fun "taking rp seriously". They like to push themselves as writers, and they like to have detail, which does require more involvement from partners (who should obviously enjoy it too, otherwise, they're just a bad match lol and neither mun should be roleplaying with the other).

Most long-term roleplayers tend to keep their distance (I know at least me and my partners do) from blogs that appear to be short-term or spontaneous. And because there are so few of us in the first place, honestly, we're not going to affect any real change in the RPC, or make any real ripple effects. I can count the number of long-term roleplayers I know on both hands. We're kind of just there, sitting in the corner. So the muns who you describe as being discouraged or feeling pressured and giving up, while their feelings are understandable, I don't think they actually feel pressured by us in particular, inherently, as long-term roleplayers. There's a much higher chance the pressure is coming from elsewhere. And I honestly haven't seen a single roleplayer's rules, or a PSA, suggest this is something that requires x amount of replies within x amount of time, or anything job-like, in years. It's quite the opposite.

But I'm running my mouth now. Like others said ad nauseum already, everyone just needs to communicate, and understand not everyone is built the same, or works the same (whether they are spontaneous or consistent). It can solve all of this. Unless someone is a legitimate ass (who will get angry no matter what, and believe me lol, I know there are a ton of people like that out there!), nobody cares how other people roleplay unless they lead people on. I want to close by saying I appreciate what you've said on this topic, and it's given me a lot to think about, even if this ask doesn't convey that.

☠ What does someone have to do for an instant unfollow from you? untagged / uncut smut roleplay, any display of bigoted or hateful views, guilt-trippy words, vagues, pity fishing. new one bug misgendering me (she/her and they/them are NOT my pronouns: I LITERALLY HAVE MINE LISTED EVERYWHERE), making jokes or fun of my name (newsflash: yin yang jokes are actually racist when i'm asian.) i've developed very low tolerance levels for all of this.

♥ What's the WORST thing that has happened to you rp wise? uhhh that one time a duplicate (who was an adult) stalked and tried to turn an entire community against me when i was sixteen because I wouldn't give in to covert measures at discouraging me from writing this specific character. and then ANOTHER duplicate of that same character tried to do the same thing but she went the extra mile to have her lackeys send anon hate while gaslighting me about it when i confronted her directly.

♦ What was a mildly annoying thing that has happened to you rp wise? Um. There's a conversation to be had about RPers preferences for cis male characters.

♢ Has anyone ever tried to steal your blog? Your headcanons? Icons? All that jazz YES. OH MY GOD. While I block all duplicates on a principle so I can avoid seeing it again, I've had it happened to me way back on the characters I played when I was 16 and it's like. WHY. YOU'RE EVEN FOLLOWING ME AND THE SAME PEOPLE I WRITE WITH TO DO THAT. Don't get me started on when I rped a character that was a popular fc among tumblr rps at the time because I'd find my icons on their blogs too and once I got so fed up that I just released all icons I used (shy of 900 total).

♚ How many people don't like you? I'm sure I've got plenty, but for my peace of mind, I'm not trying to think about it.

(smiles) Needless to say....... sigh.

❀ What has made you completely lose your chill? Being gaslit when I tried to approach someone about something their friends were doing towards me. I don't expect you to be people's keepers but if your people are coming after me anonymously in your name, you can't just sit back and do nothing and tell me I'm overreacting like be serious.

✿ What do you think about public call out posts? They're good when they're necessary. They're dumb when the 'evidence' are the allegations themselves and not actual proof or just clear signs of stalking.

✂ A fandom that you feel isn't open and accepting? Idk. Most canons; they don't really care much for crossover interactions as much as they say they do, and they certainly don't care much for OCs.Some canon spaces don't even allow OCs.

✉ A fandom that you feel is open and accepting? OC 'fandom'(?) have my hearts. Other OC writers go above and beyond to help get some interactions going, and they're some of the strongest writers on the planet to keep going, despite how much this plaform has stacked against them.

✖ How has Tumblr RP changed since you started? In ways, it's gotten better. While it's not by a huge margin, the fact that people are generally more enthusiastic at having marginalized characters or characters with these traits added to certain canon characters in their spaces says a lot about where we are in society. I also love that we're more quick to call out weird people and whitewashing. Where I was in Tumblr RP back in 2012-16, you couldn't really imagine much of this since it was kept under horny wraps. People also won't put straight up korn with the p on your feed without their proper tags the way they did back then, so that's a major plus.

♒ Thoughts on the fandom you're currently rping in? If I'm being honest with you, it's just the people that know about Psycho-Pass. LOL.
