this is like. so non-important compared to all my other grievances with the webcomic but like. the reasons kim hyunsoo gives for changing javier's hair from silver to mint. lol. lmao even.

they're so,, lazy,,,,

i mean the novel illustrations did it perfectly well imo

'but nali' i hear you say 'those are novel illustrations, where there's only one drawing per chapter. of course it's more difficult to do in a webcomic'

and sure. you're right. it's very different in a webcomic. in fact i am almost certain that no webcomic has ever had a protagonist with silver hair.

not a single webcomic ever has done that before. truly. a completely unrealistic expectation to have.

really it's not like silver hair is one of the most popular tropes in manhwa and almost every other webcomic has one of those

clearly. this was a completely impossible thing to ask of an adaptation. it's not like it's one of the most iconic parts of our protagonist's design. it's not like it's mentioned almost every single time javier is onscreen.

really. what a truly necessary change.

which. speaking of.

now, correct me if i'm wrong. but shouldn't your deuteragonist, the very first character your character meets, your second main character's design,,, more important than a secondary character that isn't introduced like,,, more than a hundred episodes later???

like. i don't think we even get told what color lloyd's hair is. but god does the novel mention that habiel has silver hair every five minutes.

i'm sorry i just think that if you're gonna adapt something the very least thing you could do is try to be faithful to one of the very few character descriptions we ever get! especially that of your goddamn main character!

how come a secondary character takes precedence over him?? why not change that character's hair color then???

and even then. if your character design skills suck so much that two characters having the same hair color is enough to make them look too similar perhaps there's a bigger problem here.

i just,,,, i am almost certain i know what character he's speaking of. maybe even two characters. hell maybe even three. but fucking guess what. the webnovel illustrations already did designs for those characters. it gave them all silver hair. and there was No Issue at all because their designs were so distinct from one another that at no point was there any doubt of who was who. because that's what good character design is about.

like. that's such a stupid reason oh my godddd if you're gonna pull that bs then what's your excuse for all those other characters with brown hair. are you not worried they're gonna overlap because their hair color is the same. i mean you made silurian's brown hair darker so now it matches like 90% of your background characters. do their design not overlap like that.

i'm just!! it's such a stupid thing to get mad about!! especially when there's far more egregious changes being made but like!! it just,,, it shows the kind of attitude the people adapting tged into a webcomic have towards the source material

it's not about the hair color. i mean it is but there's more to it. it's about how the artists feel comfortable disregarding parts of the novel and canon because it's more convenient to them. it's about how they prefer to focus on unimportant stuff that gets them a few laughs rather than put a little bit of effort into getting their characters right. it's about how they waste entire panels into making ugly faces and repetitive jokes rather than take a bit of time to get the hair color of their protagonist correctly.

Hyunsoo finds himself pondering over the new tasks he and his fellow actors are given for the quarter. This time, with a tad more intrigue. As interesting as the variety programs were, straying too far out of his comfort zone was something of a source of nerves for him. He does feel relief when the models are mentioned to be taking part in the activity, and his smile grows when he's miraculously paired with Han Jisoo. Lucked out, he would say.

H is especially ecstatic when he realizes they are meant to reenact iconic scenes from the piece of media they choose by happenstance. Train to Busan. The scenes from a movie he knew like the back of his hand play through his head. Of course, they would all tackle the "who will be who" question with due time. For the moment, they are meant to tackle the matter of modeling first. Hyunsoo hadn't initially thought of it as much of his forte, but how difficult could posing for the camera be? He has accrued plenty of experience by now, surely.

It is only a matter of patience this time. Jisoo seems to be given leeway in choosing their outfits, being the model with knowledge on the topic. As much as he trusts his friend to make the proper choices, Hyunsoo is left in the dressing room for a minute too long and sees no other choice but to go out searching for him.

"Jisoo?" He calls out, peering around the swinging door to the changing room in search of his model friend. When he spots him mulling over the rack of options, he has no choice but to gently prod him in the shoulder. "Did you pick something out yet, sir? Or do you normally take this long to deliberate?" The question is posed with a quirked brow and a slight smile. "I suppose perfection takes time."

Hyunsoo wants to believe that the other's sentimentality is sincere — so badly, so desperately, he craves for an extra inkling of the warmth of friendship. The cynicism he had been bathing himself in for the past few days is no stench strong enough to ward off Jino's strong personality. Friendly in the way a dog is; too large to ignore and leave without affectionate pats to the head. He tucks his chin into his chest and sinks teeth into the flesh of his lower lip.

"Yes... Yeah," Jino truly thought of him? Did he? Or is he becoming too presumptuous from this simple gesture? The tendrils of socializing tickle the bottom of Hyunsoo's feet. He shifts around in his chair. "If...— When I have— Or, I mean... Next Sunday is all yours. We can... go do something. Since you came here with me, we can do whatever you want. Deal?"

His eyes light up, making the large brown circles grow as bright as his reflective frames. "But... The movie! Yes! You know the movie?" He is grinning now, obviously elated to learn Jino at least knew of a film he did ( and one he quite liked ). It did not quite matter if he knew much more beyond the title and premise, however. "It's exactly like that. You have a bunch of other people going against you and your team has to win. We can do doubles. When you win, you get chicken dinner... Well, not an actual chicken dinner but..." Hyunsoo leans over to Jino's screen, pointing at the icon for the game.

The application on his computer boots up and displays the title screen. He hurriedly logs into his account, writing down information for a spare one he had for Jino to log into himself on a small post-it note.

"Join my server and we can start going into matches. I named it... Area 51."

it wasn’t much.

it really wasn’t.

in passing jino had mentioned to his grandmother the day before about going out with a friend a day or two after chuseok. more of a sign of notice rather than for anything to be prepared. but come the day he was to meet hyunsoo, jino had been greeted with two boxes of kimbap (one for himself, and the other, obviously, for hyunsoo). so, really, it wasn’t much to jino  —  but he hadn’t expected hyunsoo’s reaction.

“nah, don’t mention it. it was chuseok and she had extra time. why don’t you come by next time  —  my grandma would rather that than some thanks.” and if he hadn’t extended, jino was sure his grandmother would personally make the next calls from home about that and how jino had never brought his friend around. ( and jino would do anything to avoid that happening )

“maybe the next time you have off? save a sunday for me?”

dropping into the seat beside hyunsoo, he recalled what hyunsoo had done earlier and looked around, wondering if he, too, should pat the teddy bear sticker but thinks otherwise  —  maybe that was a little too advanced for him. after all, this would be his first time.

what he does copy is the motions of turning the computer on; waiting for it to boot up, the screen practically blinding him as it does so. “uh …” he’s left slightly speechless, trying to churn the words that had just been said in his head  — trying to remember exactly what they meant was harder than he thought “yeah, sure, that sounds cool. that’s kind of like a fight to the finish, yeah?” he hopes he isn’t coming off dumb, the last thing jino wanted was to say the wrong thing. “something like that japanese movie?” 

maybe he should have stopped at 'fight to the finish'.

ㅡ LGC RETREAT 2K23 / INTRODUCTION

Hyunsoo sits securely in his spot on the ground, legs pulled up to his chest wirh his arms encircled around them. He glances up at the center of the room, intently following along with each individual's introduction. Some he finds himself cracking a slight smile of amusement at. However, his nerves are enough to detach him from much sense of joy with the looming threat of his own turn coming up. He wracks his mind for possible things to say, muttering several options of approach underneath his breath. He has already convinced himself that he lacks the sufficient charisma and energy required to accomplish a memorable introduction; well aware he is better suited reciting a script or lingering behind the camera.

Perhaps it would be better to simply go off the cuff, but Hyunsoo was unaccustomed to this sort of activity. In fact, he does not recall having done so since his first day of university. He drifts into his memory in an attempt to tap into what he might have said back then. Though, he must have changed a bit since that time. He has no desire to boast about his parents or brother or hype up his own skills.

There is not much time to think up a script for himself in the moment. A staff member gestures to him to come out next.

Hyunsoo pulls himself off the floor and stumbles into the center of the room—quite literally. His hands touch the ground, leg lifting back. He falls into a bow at the waist, arms folding up as he attempts to retain his sense of balance. It is a display of the least graceful swan in the room. Since when did he become so hopelessly clumsy?

"Aha... hello! I am rookie actor Lee Hyunsoo! I trained for just about three years before making my debut as an actor." Despite the softness in his appearance and his meek nature, his voice emerges in its typical rather stoic cadence. "And three facts?" He keeps his hands behind his back, and his eyes drift to the side. There is not much else to say. Aren't I too uninteresting to come up with three facts? After the brief pause, he hums with contemplation.

"I can eat about six or seven cheeseburgers in one sitting... without feeling sick!" Why would he admit such a thing? He nearly grimaces. "I have a lovely cat named Cocoa Bean! She is a rescue from a shelter." Okay, a bit better. "And lastly, I think there is more out there in the universe than the human race!" He nods and makes a gesture similar to the iconic aliens meme. Oh, no, why did you say that? His mind screams and he quickly leaves to go back to his seat.
