My gluten free, eggless Nutella oatmeal cookies kinda melted in the oven, prolly because I added too much applesauce, and took forever to cook and solidify. Still good tho, even if they look like crap.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: a mass of toasted oatmeal cookie that has been haphazardly divided with a spatula after flattening and combining together in the oven. End I.D.]
Recipe
Half cup margarine with a little salt, or if you're a rich prick enough to afford salted butter use that.
One cup brown sugar
Half a cup of Nutella, or roughly that. I didn't really have enough for it but whatevs it still worked.
One-fourth cup applesauce. I actually used double that, because applesauce is what replaces the egg and you always add an extra egg to gluten free baked goods, but I think that was too much moisture and why they spread out so thinly. So I'd try for just one-fourth cup.
One cup all purpose gf flour (I used King Arthur's All Purpose GF)
One cup gluten free rolled/old fashioned oats
One teaspoon baking soda
Mix together flour, oats, and baking soda
In a separate bowl, cream together the margarine/salt (or salted butter) and sugar. And if you're like me, "cream together" means angrily mash and wisk together with a fork while cursing Black And Decker's name because you still can't afford to replace the egg beater you bought from them that rusted in six months.
Add the Nutella and applesauce into the creamed mixture and incorporate well.
Mix the wet and dry ingredients together.
Refrigerate dough for a half hour.
Preheat oven to three hundred and fifty degrees Fahrenheit.
Use a spoon to dollop the dough onto a lined (with parchment paper or foil) baking pan.
Dig out your pizza pan and line that with foil too because you don't have enough room on your baking pan.
Allegedly bake for ten minutes.
Add on about another fifteen minutes because gluten free baking never runs on time.
Enjoy!

We're currently switch my cat's food and litter to try to figure out what's causing this weird mystery allergy she's had for the last like 5 years and I was kinda worried she wouldn't like the new food bcs you never know, but actually she likes it so much it's actually ridiculous. Cuz like when you switch a cat(or dog's) food you have to taper it like a medication, you keep giving them the old food but slowly mix in more and more of the new food while mixing in less of the old, cuz if you don't you can make them sick, and she is SO SO SO mad that I keep giving her ANY of the old food.
Whenever I go to fill up her bowl I first add in the old food and then mix in the new, and while she used to just immediately start eating when I'd pour her food now she just watches me do the first one, sniffs the bowl, and then sits back and stares at me like "uh mother it appears there's been an error" and then when I reach for the other food she looses her MIND and starts shoving her face in my way and meowing and getting all excited and she only starts eating once it's mixed in.
So like, glad she enjoys the new stuff at least!

How to Identify and Manage Your Pet's Food Allergies
As pet owners, we always want the best for our furry friends, ensuring they are happy and healthy. However, sometimes our pets may develop issues that can be challenging to diagnose and manage. One such issue is pet food allergy, which can significantly affect your pet's quality of life. In this blog, we will explore how to identify and manage food allergies in pets, also known as pet dietary allergies, and differentiate them from food intolerances.
Tumblr media
Understanding Pet Food Allergies
A pet food allergy is an adverse immune response to a particular ingredient in your pet's diet. Unlike food intolerances, which result from the digestive system's inability to process certain ingredients, food allergies involve the immune system and can cause more severe symptoms.
Common Symptoms of Food Allergic Pets
Food allergic pets often exhibit various symptoms, including:
Itchy skin: Persistent scratching, especially around the face, ears, and paws.
Digestive issues: Vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive gas.
Ear infections: Recurrent ear infections that don't respond to treatment.
Skin problems: Red, inflamed skin, hot spots, and hair loss.
If you notice any of these symptoms, it is essential to consider the possibility of a pet dietary allergy and consult your veterinarian.
Identifying Food Allergies in Pets
Identifying a pet food allergy can be a complex process that typically involves several steps:
1. Consultation with Your Veterinarian
The first step in identifying a pet food allergy is to schedule a consultation with your veterinarian. They can help rule out other potential causes of your pet's symptoms and provide guidance on the best course of action.
2. Elimination Diet
An elimination diet is the most effective method for diagnosing food allergies in pets. This involves feeding your pet a novel protein and carbohydrate source they haven't been exposed to before. Common options include duck and potato or venison and sweet potato.
During the elimination diet, it's crucial to avoid all other foods, treats, and flavored medications to ensure accurate results. The diet should be followed for at least 8-12 weeks.
3. Reintroduction of Suspected Allergens
After the elimination period, you can gradually reintroduce the suspected allergens one at a time. This helps to identify the specific ingredient causing the allergic reaction. If symptoms reappear, it confirms the presence of a pet food allergy.
Managing Pet Food Allergies
Once a pet dietary allergy is identified, managing it involves several key steps:
1. Permanent Dietary Changes
The most effective way to manage a pet food allergy is to avoid the allergenic ingredient permanently. Your veterinarian can help you design a balanced diet that meets your pet's nutritional needs without including the offending allergen.
2. Regular Veterinary Check-Ups
Regular check-ups with your veterinarian, such as those at Cascade Summit Animal Hospital, are essential for monitoring your pet's health and managing any ongoing issues related to food allergies. Your vet can also help you adjust your pet's diet as needed to ensure they are receiving all necessary nutrients.
3. Hypoallergenic Pet Foods
Many pet food brands offer hypoallergenic options formulated to minimize the risk of allergic reactions. These foods often contain novel proteins and carbohydrates and are free from common allergens such as beef, chicken, dairy, and wheat. Consult with your veterinarian or a trusted pet care provider like Cascade Summit Animal Hospital to find the best hypoallergenic food for your pet.
4. Preventing Cross-Contamination
To prevent accidental exposure to allergens, ensure that your pet's food is stored separately from other foods, and clean their feeding bowls thoroughly. Be cautious when giving treats or table scraps, as these can often contain hidden allergens.
Conclusion
Identifying and managing a pet food allergy can be challenging, but with careful observation and the right approach, you can significantly improve your pet's quality of life. Regular consultations with your veterinarian, like those at Cascade Summit Animal Hospital, and following an elimination diet are crucial steps in diagnosing and managing pet dietary allergies. By making informed dietary choices and being vigilant about potential allergens, you can help your furry friend lead a happier, healthier life.
If you suspect your pet may have a food allergy, don't hesitate to reach out to Cascade Summit Animal Hospital for expert advice and support. Their experienced team can guide you through the process of identifying and managing food allergies, ensuring your pet receives the best care possible.

Understanding Hypoallergenic Dog Food: What You Need to Know
Introduction: As pet owners, we want the best for our furry companions, especially when it comes to their health and well-being. However, some dogs suffer from food allergies or sensitivities, which can lead to discomfort and health issues. This is where hypoallergenic dog food comes into play. In this article, we will explore what hypoallergenic dog food is, who it's for, and how it can benefit your beloved pet.
What is Hypoallergenic Dog Food? Hypoallergenic dog food is specially formulated to minimize allergic reactions in dogs with food sensitivities or allergies. These foods are made with limited ingredients, often excluding common allergens such as wheat, corn, soy, and dairy. Additionally, hypoallergenic dog food may contain novel protein sources, such as duck, venison, or salmon, which are less likely to trigger allergic reactions in sensitive dogs.
Who Needs Hypoallergenic Dog Food? Dogs can develop allergies or sensitivities to various ingredients in their food, just like humans. Common signs of food allergies in dogs include itching, scratching, licking, gastrointestinal issues, and ear infections. If your dog exhibits any of these symptoms, it's essential to consult with your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause. In many cases, switching to a hypoallergenic diet can help alleviate these symptoms and improve your dog's overall health and well-being.
Benefits of Hypoallergenic Dog Food:
Allergy Relief: The primary benefit of hypoallergenic dog food is relief from allergic reactions and sensitivities. By eliminating common allergens and using novel protein sources, these diets can help alleviate itching, scratching, and other symptoms associated with food allergies.
Improved Digestion: Many dogs with food sensitivities also experience gastrointestinal issues, such as diarrhea, vomiting, or flatulence. Hypoallergenic dog food is typically easier to digest, making it ideal for dogs with sensitive stomachs.
Healthy Skin and Coat: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is vital for maintaining healthy skin and a shiny coat. Hypoallergenic dog food often contains omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that promote skin health and coat condition, reducing itching and dryness.
Weight Management: Some hypoallergenic dog foods are formulated to help dogs maintain a healthy weight. By providing the right balance of nutrients without unnecessary fillers or additives, these diets can support weight management in dogs prone to obesity or weight gain.
Overall Well-being: When your dog feels good on the inside, it shows on the outside. By nourishing your pet with high-quality, hypoallergenic food, you're not only addressing their specific dietary needs but also supporting their overall health and well-being.
Choosing the Right Hypoallergenic Dog Food: When selecting hypoallergenic dog food for your pet, it's essential to consider their individual needs and preferences. Your veterinarian can help you determine which ingredients to avoid and recommend suitable hypoallergenic options based on your dog's age, size, breed, and health status.
Additionally, be sure to read the ingredients list carefully and opt for reputable brands known for their quality and transparency. Look for hypoallergenic dog food that is AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) certified to ensure it meets the nutritional requirements for your dog's life stage.
Conclusion: Hypoallergenic dog food can be a game-changer for dogs with food allergies or sensitivities, providing relief from uncomfortable symptoms and improving their overall quality of life. By understanding what hypoallergenic dog food is, who it's for, and its benefits, you can make informed decisions to support your pet's health and well-being. Remember to consult with your veterinarian before making any changes to your dog's diet to ensure it meets their specific nutritional needs. With the right hypoallergenic diet, you can help your furry friend live a happy, healthy, and allergy-free life.

okay like two out of three of my cats are like… on death’s door basically despite them being all roughly the same age and sharing the same genetics (mother aged 16, son and daughter aged 15) and while i’ve accepted that i’ll be exceptionally lucky to get even another year or two with the momma cat (bonded to me) and that her son (bonded to my mom) is not too far behind… despite being the runt 15 years ago, the daughter (also bonded to me) is still quite spry and in good health so i literally tell her sometimes like you’d better live til you’re 20. i need at least five more years with you and also some time in between you and your mom dying. please.
#having old pets is sad#however i could not imagine willfully abandoning an elderly pet#which like… seems like it goes without saying but a lot of people do just decide their pet is too old and surrender it to a shelter#and miss daughter kitty was abandoned at like 10/11 by my cousin she did actually leave our household for a while#like who does that…#i mean no complaints i wanted to keep her when she was a kitten so i was more than happy to take her back but dude after ten years?#and she’s not even old in a sad way yet. and i’ve had her for an additional 4-5 years since#i mean it had something to do with her needing more attention after her other brother died and my cousin having kids and the cat probably#was not crazy about the kids she is very much a grumpy old lady even if she’s still lowkey a crackhead like a much younger cat#she is fat as fuck rn but idk what to do about that while the other two are still alive#like if we feed her less she will just steal more of their food than she already does because theyre too busy having arthritis to go eat#but like… we can’t just feed them less because they have a reduced appetite they still need to fucking eat…#so idk she’ll be going on a diet eventually but it’s not presently feasible#before i moved back in her diet was really strict because she hated my roomie’s cat so much she literally lived exclusively in my bedroom#so like i can adequately manage her diet when she’s not being a thief… but idk how to explain theft to a cat#at least i got her off iams dude idk what is in that shit but weaning her onto better food took at least six months and a lot of vomitting#like not ideal that she’s becoming obese again but she was this fat when i got her too (bc high carb iams diet)#HOWEVER her energy levels (while they’ve dropped since she was a healthy weight) are still wayy higher than when i got her#so getting fat from her high end gluten free purina and her relatives’ prescription hypoallergenic kibble and wet food for extra protein…#every other day (which has kept her from developing any visible muscle degeneration tyvm) is evidently healthier than being iams fat

I'm about 90% sure it's a form of dermatitis - probably agitated because I got a different flavor of their food cause the other was out of stock. Gonna keep monitoring it & switching his food back as well as giving him some extra protein supplements.
When we first got him, he had bumps like this as well which was quickly fixed after changing to a grain-free diet. He's still grain-free so idk what ingredients could have triggered it, but I'm gonna keep a close eye on him and see if we need to go to the vet next week
apollo has some little bumps behind his ear & top of his head - they're like little scab bumps? I'm thinking they could be from him scratching & maybe accidentally breaking skin but I'm not sure
