I got a single yes and that's all I need! I'll put most of this under a cut.

The tale of Hypnos kidnapping children is a common one, but only actually founded in a singular instance. The Missing case of Noelle Tanner, happening in Kanto, 1996. The young girl's window was left open a crack when she went to sleep, and the next day she was gone. She was found 23 hours after her parents reported her missing, having been sleepwalking guided by a Hypno.

At the time, the story was chalked up to a strange incident but ultimately nothing malicious. Hypno eat dreams, so it was presumed the sleeping girl was already sleepwalking and the Hypno was just following her to eat her dreams. Some early theories even proposed the Hypno was trying to guide the girl out of walking into any dangerous situations- funny how stories can change, huh? Though for the record there's not any more proof this was the case then any of the darker theories. Everything about why this happened and what exactly happened is largely considered unsolved, though since Noelle was unharmed it wasn't really looked into that much either.

Anyway, fastforward to about 2003. The internet is becoming more popular and the now 19 year old Noelle is interviewed by a news site about the events and her thoughts and suddenly, the story catches like wildfire. People start claiming to have known people who the same thing happened to, trying to connect other missing children cases to Hypno by correlating them with locations of missing people and known Hypno populations- its kind of a mess.

Despite a lot of people claiming to have had the same thing happen or know people who had the same thing happen, there's no police reports or similar forms of documentation to back up these claims. Any kind of police report relating to the idea of a Hypno snatching away a child don't start popping up until after this media wildfire.

Of these many claims and reports to come after, only two were viable, but both weren't as devious as some made it out to be. In the first of these two instances, a 10 year old went missing and was found later in the woods with a Hypno. The thing is? It was his older brother's Hypno. The 10 year old took the Hypno with him to try to be like his older brother (a trainer) and ended up getting lost after being attacked by a Spearow swarm. This one also happened in Kanto.

In the second case, a busy father sent his Hypno to collect his 7 year old daughter from school and bring her home. Concerned citizens saw the Hypno bring the girl through a wooded path and called authorities, but it turned out the girl was never 'missing' at any point. The whole time authorities looked into it, she was at home safe and sound, the Hypno having brought her home as requested. The wooded path was the most direct path from the girl's school to her home. This happened in Alola.

Any other cases basically don't even have proof a Hypno was present, much less involved, but the idea had already caught wind. Hypno started to appear as a Pokemon used by villains more frequently after this, the increase being noticeably by 2005.

In 2007, a movie released in Unova where a babysitter's charge is kidnapped by a Hypno and she and her Clefairy must power through a harsh and terrifying wilderness to find and defeat the Hypno and bring the kidnapped boy back. The movie was actually animated and not specifically horror, but a lot of the scenes with the Hypno and in the terrifying woods were pretty chilling. The movie was supposedly supposed to be a warning of the danger of going into the wild without a Pokemon, and a 'stranger danger' type message.

In 2012, an indie dev created a horror game where you're chased through the woods by an eyeless Hypno collecting lost children's toys. The implications were pretty clear, and it became an incredibly popular game for lets players of the time.

While there's plenty more instances of antagonistic Hypno in horror/other media, there's no need for me to go over them all. Point being, one strange story spiraled into a permanent black stain on a species' reputation.

Further details about the original Noelle case:

Noelle was found unharmed and woke up quickly.

Noelle had apparently woken up at some point during her time with the Hypno, as she was found to have eaten some berries. Noelle did not and still says she does not remember what happened during this period. She only remembers going to bed that night and then being awoken by the authorities that found her.

The Hypno was put into a sanctuary after the incident, just in case it could serve a danger to others if left in the wild. The Hypno never did try to do anything like what happened in the Noelle incident during its time there and passed of natural causes in 2019.

The Hypno was also examined. It was mildly underweight and had a crack in its pendulum, but otherwise had nothing of note that could've explained the strange behavior.

Noelle's window was still only open a crack the morning she went missing, leading to questions on if she left a different way or if the window was just reset to its original position after being opened wider. The Tanner family admitted at the time that they didn't lock their doors, so the window wasn't the only way in.

Noelle holds no ill will towards the Hypno, though she says it did give her a fear of being kidnapped and she developed insomnia as a result of the paranoia. She always locks her windows and doors nowadays. In another interview in 2020 with the then 36-year-old Noelle, she notes that her insomnia does not effect her as much.

The case was sometimes shortened to MissingNo in internet discussion. This is actually the name of an unrelated Kanto urban legend which also gained notoriety in other regions, which lead to a fade in people referring to the Noelle case as such.

I know I mentioned it before when discussing how [A lot of perceived facts about ghost types stem from horror movies and aren't actually true], but did I ever actually elaborate on the bunnelby hole of a discussion regarding how Hypno's image has been affected by media?
