Following the new Mintz passage release, I wanted to put my two cents in on the question: From what we know from the two main conflicting accounts, was John always desperate to get back with Yoko? 

My answer: Yes, no, it was probably complicated. 

If we are taking Mintz and May’s accounts at face value (which ….argh, esp given Mintz’ history), both May and Mintz stories are still incomplete by the nature of their perspective.

In May’s story, it’s Yoko the puppet master who’s calling billions of times and trying to control the narrative. John on the other hand is taking her calls out of the kindness of his heart because Yoko’s his ‘bestie’ and wants to give her that. May’s account also downplays John’s wild period and instead talks of him recovering and getting better as he moves on from Yoko.

May’s story is credible on several different levels. From all other accounts of Yoko (even from Mintz in this very passage) Yoko calls people at all hours and incessantly.  Yoko is also a massive, massive control freak (not a criticism, control freaks tend to emerge from trauma it’s just an unavoidable observation). Her characterisation of Yoko is lopsided, but it does tally with what we know. 

John is also on the record flirting with the idea of getting back with the Beatles, and is buying rather than renting a flat in LA with May. John is also ALLEGEDLY pining after May in his diaries and told one friend that being with May was the happiest time of his life. When talking in interviews later, John is also quite mature and composed in his recounting that he made the decision to go back and work on it due to past experiences of relationships getting into difficult situations and that this was an active deliberation on his part (let’s ignore the elephant that that past experience was borderline explicitly referring to Paul not Cynthia cause jfc). For what it’s worth a similar portrayal of Johns decision to go back shows up in Charlie Swan’s account. There’s also no getting around that in May’s pictures after the crazier period that he looks so much healthier and more vibrant. 

However May’s account doesen’t include a key part of John’s character: his abandonment issues and inability to let go. Even if he was ready to move on, John Lennon is never going to be zen about that. He would either do what he did with Cynthia which was go scorched earth and take her to the cleaners or if he was less certain about the split, do what he did with Paul and what he IS DOING IN THIS SITUATION which is his kiss-slap-slap thing of making all the overtures that he’s happy and moving on whilst concurrently falling apart and calling people asking to get back together. If Paul’s heart is like a wheel, John’s is like a spinning max security fortress, once you’re deep in there, your ass is never truly leaving. 

It also doesn't account for the possibility too painful for May to probably contemplate — that John lied to her. May was a strong, spunky young woman who took on a massive task that she shouldn’t have been placed in the position to fulfil and made it her mission. She was also 23 dealing with a charming older man, a man so sweet and gentle and tender who also choked her. A man who was fully able to love someone and sleep with someone else. John for his part probably didn’t want to look vulnerable in front of this bright young woman who also happened to be his girlfriend. Of course he would not open up about wanting to get back with Yoko! The hypno-brainwashing thing is clearly bullshit but think about it, you’re 23 and about to buy a place with your bf and he comes back looking like shit and, from your pov, tells you out of nowhere that he’s leaving. How tf do you rationalise the last 18 months of your life when you have given everything to this man?? The man who btw keeps calling and sleeping with you in the late 70s? It would be like getting the rug pulled from under you in a super weird circumstance no wonder you’ll clutch any straws that will still maintain the sanctity of your connection to the guy. 

Then there’s Mintz’s account where John is desperate and waiting on the go ahead from Yoko to get back to her. I’ve no doubt that at least some of those calls happened (that frequency though? Ehhhhh). It also lines up with John telling May that ‘Yoko’s allowed him to go home’. The problem with Mintz is that he doesent have the perspective of the Yoko calls, of John testing the waters with Paul and thinking of going to New Orleans or of having fun with May. If you think about it, Mintz is one of the only people John can be vulnerable about Yoko whom might have some sway. Of course that’s where his feelings are going to go. 

To frame John getting his shit together just for Yoko, yeah it works if John made other overtures like Paul suggested but … he didn’t.  He starts to move to LA (even if the packing doesent seem heavy he is buying a property), he reconnects with others and his walls and bridges album is a very ‘moving on’ album, some parts sad, other parts understanding, other parts hopeful. Maybe John was testing Yoko by making these moves or maybe John is both not over the breakup and trying to move on. I think anyone who’s had a nasty breakup can relate. Also John is a grown ass man, he can want to pull himself together for himself.

Mintz’s characterisation of Yoko in the break-up is also a heady mix of weirdly passive and overwhelmingly powerful in her emotional pull on John and letting him ‘come home’. The bits where Yoko may have acted imperfectly or with vulnerability (ordering May to be with John, the calls, visiting Paul for no reason whatsoever obvs, her demanding to be at MSG in better seats, the affairs and PR demands) are brushed over, justified or predominantly omitted.(I mentioned this in the last post but Yoko is intriguing in the way she weaponises the stereotype of feminine passivity to avoid culpability/responsibility/difficult questions. There are so many examples of her doing this and it’s interesting that Mintz here is following her line.) These omissions let Yoko glide through the narrative without paying much mind to how she was feeling. How did she feel for example when John mentioned his estranged fiancé to get a reaction from him and nothing for his estranged wife?? (As an aside the way John compared and pitted Yoko and Paul against each other - no wonder they could never be friends.) Not including Yoko’s actions makes it read like John mooning over the distant star of Yoko whilst omitting their more tense moments where he seemed fully on  board with separation. 

So what’s the truth? I think as with everything in John’s emotional life it was absurdly complicated. His behaviour matches the pattern of many messy splits where you have that freak out stage then slowly start to pull yourself together. As John’s moods flipped constantly, it’s perfectly reasonable that part of his scared vulnerable side longed for Yoko and that security and vented that to the one person who could empathise with him, whilst his dissatisfied self started to realise the possibility of a life without her and the benefits there (being freer with May, hanging with Paul, reconnecting with others etc). Ngl some of Yoko’s phone calls must have annoyed him due to their contents. It makes perfect sense that Yoko draws in when John starts to pull away and establish himself independently. Those two were playing mind games on ultra hard mode bby, unfortunately the closest people to the situation were the least inclined/able to give an unbiased version of events.

starting with joe hills, y/n and xisuma track down the hermits and ask them to join, via montage. they’ve all moved on and have new jobs. hypno is doing some modded stuff, tango is an overworked game dev, doc is a tomato farmer, gem is a serial killer, mumbo is biking around europe, grian is procrastinating, cleo is a fashion director, zedaph is a gameshow host, etc etc. they all agree to help, with varying degrees of hesitance or eagerness

finally, they track down etho. he is now working for a big name company designing redstone machines full time. despite their best efforts, etho refuses to help, satisfied with his current job and lacking any motivation for hermitcraft projects. everyone is discouraged with etho not joining the project, especially bdubs. however gem calls etho washed up and then etho suddenly decides to join them to prove his worthiness

they have a day to try and build as many minigames and cool builds as possible. several “celebrity guests” show up for the event, including scott and martyn, and wilbur soot, because he’s enamoured with grian. the stream starts, and they try to do competitions and play games, however, the helsmits are there and are trying to sabotage the event. y/n has been questioning this entire time what type of player they are - redstoner, builder, etc - failing to succeed in any of those categories, however, after a heartful talk with joe hills, accepts that there are talents not recognised by the minecraft community at large but are still admirable, and they do a dramatic poetry reading together.

in the end, evil xisuma, refusing to accept defeat, cuts out the power to stop the stream 23 hours and 59 minutes in - a minute short of the time goal. the hermits are at first devastated but then remember that as with any stream like this, they already reached the monetary goal 5 minutes in. in fact, they reached double the goal the moment grian talked, and five times the goal the second etho was in frame. zedaph puts on his wormman costume and talks to ex, who reveals he has only been so focused on destroying hermitcraft because it made him sad to see the hermits celebrated but his favourite hermit of all - wormman - ignored. wormman explains that its okay, because of his nature of being a superhero, he needs to stay out of the limelight to best protect his identity, but he appreciates ex’s dedication to him. the other helsmits run away, plotting their revenge. a new season of hermitcraft is announced, and y/n is unanimously voted to be part of it. gem kills someone. scar proposes to grian. the crowd goes wild. everyone claps. the shot zooms out, revealing the entire thing to have been playing on a computer monitor. cut to zloyxp, pixlriffs, and lyarrah sitting in front of it, furiously taking notes for the first recap in many years

dark painted nails shift and pull the note in the back of the book to the forefront . it's a folded handwritten letter , written in familiar script with a rich but fading black ink . she can easily recall getting this letter in the mail thirty-three years ago ; back when the ink was fresh , it had a dark green shimmer to it .

thirty-three years ago .

the letter had come with the book — a custom ordered black leather rebinding of la fanu's 1872 publication, carmilla . they had spoken about vampires , gothic fashions , family curses and power in madness . it had been at equal measures light and dark conversation . she'd asked if nyx had ever read the vampire novel that started it all .

she said of course she'd read dracula . but hekate had shaken her head and told her of carmilla . nyx had learned a little then , but hekate purposefully left it vague , merely said their conversation was on the century mark of that story since publication .

a year later , nyx had taken charon to athens upon securing a position in the house of hades .

a decade later , the book arrived in the mail . as had a letter .

nyx looks down at it , knowing the message by heart at this point . a brief explanation as to why this book ; a recounting of their conversation ( as if she could ever forget ) ; a note about how , despite the tale being so brief , it fundamentally birthed the vampire genre and set the expectations for subsequent iterations of that trope .

how mothers lose themselves for their children . how women lose themselves for another — God , man , woman , child . how society loves to trap , to brand , to convince , to coerce .

she remembers an even younger her , one who thought she had it all figured out . married at seventeen , pregnant at eighteen , widowed single mother at twenty-two .

she picked this book for a reason . this book with a decades old olive branch tucked into the back pocket , a reminder of who she used to be when she let herself have the time . she wasn't going to sit around in her home and let the pressure of the life she strove for and created with bloody , manicured claws crush her .

the tone , however , indicated that — barring some work emergency — hekate was to make herself available .

I decided it was probably about time I worked out a proper timeline, for my own sanity more than anything, since some chapters overlap.

I will update the timeline as the story progresses to avoid spoilers for those who are following along with the fic.

The timeline is rough and might be edited in the future, but as I said, this is mostly to help me keep track of everything lol

Timeline.

Part 1: Getting Leo home.

1st: Canon portal - Divergence starts.

2nd: Directly after first.

3rd: Night time a few hours later - Mikey opens portal alone

4th: Next day - Afternoon - Failed to open

5th: Next day - Afternoon - Leo fights back

Night time: Mikey has Nightmare.

6th: ^ Same night - Mikey and Donnie opne portal alone

Next day - Donnie and Mikey argue 

7th: Next day - Morning - open portal with April and Casey

8th: Directly afterwards - SUCCESS!

Total days = 5 days.

Part 2: Leo is home

Directly after getting Leo home: 

Mikey refuses to see Leo.

April sees Leo's injuries.

April and Mikey talk.

Raph cleans Leo.

Donnie and Casey amputate Leo's arm.

Late afternoon:

Donnie goes to bed and has a nightmare.

Raph takes Donnie to med-bay.

Quest for the Stolen Dawn

A 5E dungeon crawl for celebrating the new year. Set in an ancient Greek time or plane.

At the height of the winter solstice, cultists of the Hecate beseeched her to take the sun and hide it. The Gods had a talk and the Goddess slipped away the sun.

The pantheon sent omens of a quest that night. Call for heroes of all sizes and creeds.

In a week a new temple arose from the Plains of Endymion. A lone priest stands outside the marble doors. Oracles have said that at the appointed hour the priest will let the doors open and the questers may try.

Blessings of the Gods: Each player gets 1 blessing when they solve a puzzle or defeat a room.

Aphrodite: Mirror Blade: Magical blade of mysterious metal that perfectly reflects on every surface. +3 to Attack and Damage. Short Sword, Attunement. Attuned character can use their reaction to reflect a spell or ability, if they succeed a CHA Save DC 15.

Apollo: Lyre of Radiance: Magical instrument that produces light when played. Attunement. Attuned character learns Light, Dancing Lights, Faerie Fire, Daylight, and Dawn.

Ares: Wand of Fuck You: Doubles radius of AOE spells. +2 to DC and Damage. (Thanks to RRoleplaying)

Artemis: Hunter’s Bless: +3 to Attack and Damage of ranged attacks and learns Hunter’s Mark.

Athena: Bastion Aegis: +5 to AC and +10 to HP Max. Attunement.

Demeter: Season’s Blessing: Resistance to Cold, and all damage deals additional 2d8 Cold Damage.

Dionysus: Mirthful Cup: Whenever a character drinks alcohol from this cup, they are immune from Charm and Fear for 2hrs, but have DIS on WIS Saves for the same time. A character may chug an alcoholic drink the cup and remove a poison and/or disease condition.

Eros: Bashful Aura: At the end of the character’s turn, Sanctuary is cast on them.

Hades: Helm of Invisibility: A dull golden helm with eagle wings. Medium Armor, Attunement. +3 to AC. When adorned, the character is instantly under the Greater Invisibility spell without concentration.

Hebe: Ambrosia Decanter: Character uses their Action to activate the decanter and pour out Potion of Supreme Healing (10d4 + 20 HP).

Hecate: Moonbow: A silvery gossamer veil. Attunement. The veil can become a shield that grants +3 to AC and ADV to Stealth.

Hephaestus: Crafter’s Blessing: Any check that uses artisan’s tools rolls an additional 3d4.

Hera: Rings of Alliance: Two gold bands with peacock feathers. Attunement. An attuned character may use their Action or Reaction to teleport to the other, as long as they are both on the same plane. Or use their Bonus Action to roll Hit Dice and the other regains that much HP.

Hercules: Belt of Stone Giant Strength: STR score is 23.

Hermes: Slide Whistle of Comedic Timing: 3 Charges. Creature within 60ft makes STR Save DC 16. On fail, creature falls prone as if slipping on a banana peel. Regains charges after a long rest.

Hestia: Spirit of the Hearth: Whenever character rolls to heal themselves or an ally, roll additional 2d8. Reaction, grant an ally within 5ft +3 to AC.

Hypnos: Super Comfy Blanket: A big quilted comfy blanket that can cover 4 people. (Thanks to RRoleplaying)

When taken a long rest, while attuned, roll 1d6. On 5 or 6, each person sleeping under it gains Temp HP = attuned character’s Lvl + Prof Bonus for the next 8hrs.

Alternatively, can be used to cast Tiny Hut, with an increased radius of 15ft.

Nike: Ambitious Zeal: Any Ability checks are made with ADV, if they are contesting rolls, roll additional 2d4.

Nyx: Sheltering Darkness: A shawl of dark material with small crystals sewn in. Attunement. Attuned character may use their reaction to cast Darkness.

Pan: Wild Zeal: Character may give themselves ADV or hostile creature DIS on an Attack or Saving throw. They can’t use this until they finish a long rest or roll on the Wild Surge table.

Persephone: Spring’s Promise: Character learns Druidcraft, Spike Growth, and Entangle.

Poseidon: Ocean Surge: Whenever character hits with a weapon attack, the target must make a STR Save DC 14 or be pushed back 5 x 1d3 feet.

Tyche: Gains Lucky feat.

Zeus: Storm Cloak: When the character is hit by an attack within 40ft, the cloak deals 3d8 Lightning damage to the attacker.

The Fates: A hollow d20 made of spun gold, silver, and adamantine. The character learns Fortune’s Favor, Gift of Alacrity, and Arcane Eye. 

Temple of Hecate’s Game

Temple Exterior: Marble like texture, but silvery appearance. Much like Athena’s Temple. The doors open at the first starlight on the night of the waxing crescent.

Temple Entrance: 40x25x30. Seven gold statues are placed around the room. The faces are featureless. Each is holding a different weapon. “Complete me for I have been broken. Seek the lost and the fame will be found.”

Statue 1: Unstrung bow, in a pulled back, ready to loose an arrow. In the hair of the statue is the spear head of #3.

Statue 2: Wielding a gladius, with a missing pommel. Stabbing in the back is the missing blade of #4.

Statue 3: Swinging around a staff that is actually a trident without the spear head. Hidden in the folds of cloth at the base is the other half of the broken scythe from #5.

Statue 4: Holding a club that is actually an axe without the blade. Once the other statues are made whole, the axe lowers, opening a secret door.

Statue 5: Wielding a scythe with a broken blade. 

Statue 6: Cracking a whip. Woven in the braid is the bowstring to #1.

Statue 7: Winding up a sling. Inside the sling, is the pommel of #2.

Temple Room 1: 20x40x25. Strands of gold hang from every corner. Three mirrors hang on one wall. “From the ground I seek your aid, raise me up and I’ll obey.”

Left Mirror: Copper. Etched around the rim are runes in Giant. “Breath onto me the glory of the forge so my true colors show.” 50 Fire Damage. 10 gold strands fall. 

Middle Mirror: Silver. Etched across the surface are runes in Dwarvish. “You may think me ice, but it is the sun I seek.” 50 Radiant Damage. 10 gold strands fall. 

Right Mirror: Platinum. No runes found on it. Players bring the fallen strands to the mirror. Runes appear in Celestial. “Break me with the might of song and storm.” 50 Thunder Damage. The mirror rises up the wall and a doorway appears. 

Temple Room 2: 80x100x30. 5 Suits of armor stand in a line. Behind them are 10 nude statues of marble. Each statue has a plague that reads “Grant me armor against the waking world, so I may slumber still.” Whichever statue isn’t given armor becomes animated. “Heed my words and gather your foes.” When the last animated statue falls, a stairway passage appears in the left wall.

Statue 1: Greatsword. Fighter, 60 HP

Statue 2: Greataxe. Fighter, 80 HP

Statue 3: Staff. Wizard, 50 HP

Statue 4: Sickle. Rogue, 50 HP

Statue 5: Dagger. Monk, 100 HP

Statue 6: Shield. Fighter, 60 HP

Statue 7: Spear. Barbarian, 80 HP

Statue 8: Longbow. Fighter, 60 HP

Statue 9: Morningstar. Barbarian, 80 HP

Statue 10: Warhammer. Barbarian, 40 HP

Temple Room 3: 60x100x25. Torch lit room with 4in of water. “Serpent of old, snake of gold, find me in the light, lose me in the night.”

Three Swarms of Undead Snakes. After defeating them, Investigation DC 15 to find the gold snake idol.

Perception DC 16/Investigation DC 19, find the painting of a night sky with a full moon. Without light, the moon fades way into an alcove. Placing the idol in there, all characters are teleported out.

Temple Room 4: 40x80x40. Grand hearth stands ablaze at the end of the hall. A wooden table (15x5) sits close to the front, where they teleported to. On the table are 6 keys. “Unlock the hearth to find the light. Only one choice, be wise and right.” Hearth fire parts and becomes heatless.

Key 1: Cast Iron, simple, two prongs. Instant pass. 

Key 2: Wooden, painted like a rose, three prongs. 2 Druids, 45 HP. 

Key 3: Gold, five interlocking rings, four prongs. 3 Golems, 25 HP.

Key 4: Gold, bat wings, two prongs. 2 Vampires, 40 HP.

Key 5: Silver, eagle wings, four prongs. 4 Harpies, 50 HP.

Key 6: Brass, shaped like a lizard mouth, five prongs. 1 Red Dragon Wyrmling, 90 HP. 

Temple Room 5: 80x40x50. Wooden room with open windows that show an idyllic summer day. Ten piles of brooms. “Flight is held in the wood, dust is chained in the straw. Free them and you’ll be free.” Once the 1oth is free, the characters are teleported to another room.

Investigation DC 18, Find the broom with the most dust. STR check DC 15 to clear the dust off. Broom of Flight flies out the window.

Get within 5 ft of a pile, 2 Brooms of Animated Attack, 40 HP.

10th Broom Pile has 2 brooms of flight, character may keep it.

Temple Room 6: 100x100x100. Dark grey stone room. A multilayered moving lattice cage over the sun. It illuminates the room in strobe and flashes. Standing beneath the caged sun is an 8ft tall hooded figure, with a featureless face, symbol of Hecate shimmering across their chest. The Avatar of Hecate. They stand poised with a greatsword waiting. Avatar of Hecate, Hexblade, 120 HP.

Once the players have defeated the Avatar of Hecate, the actual Goddess Hecate shows up, along with those who gifted boons to the players. The sun is released and the heroes go on to live full lives with many songs and myths about them.

If the game runs too long, but the players get to the final room, the DM can choose to end the party with one unseen stroke of the Avatar's greatsword. They awake in a luxurious pool, free of equipment and injury. Plates full of food and full chalices set nearby to each character. They were sent to Elysium.
