You know what while we’re on the bug fables leif spoilers train
That part in the beehive when they’re like “there’s something weird inside leif” my immediate series of thoughts were
1: oh no, parasites
2:
Tumblr media
3: technically if we’re talking parasitism done by insects it could be both at once

Monday Night Businessposting
Time to once again shitpost my way through my business class requirement in my master of engineering program.
The business case study we'll be talking about at the end of class is a company that sells a software package to doctors that helps them register with many different health insurance companies en masse.
Apropos of nothing, a "hyperparasite" is a parasitic organism whose hosts are parasite themselves in turn. Parasitic wasps feeding on parasitic wasps.

she went on a trip once and left her laptop at home and when she got back it was at the corner of her homescreen shaking sobbing and trying to open safari to get to the photos and having accidentally downloaded 14 malware onto itself in the process. Also it accidentally logged her out of ao3. Never again.
Todays useless headcanon is that if Glitchtrap starts melting down (it lives partially in Vanessa’s computer as a virus/desktop pet) Vanessa will just pull up a photo of Henry (like a crusty old mugshot from the 80s usually) and Glitchtrap immediately calms down and stares at it for a while. She has no idea why it works but it does and she isn’t complaining.

hey i was thinkin bout that post where you go parasites are rly important and i agree with you but could you give me one (1) reason why pinworms specifically should be allowed to live? /genq i have personal beef
'allowed to live' is super yikes
ALL parasites are very important to their foodwebs due to how they redistribute energy/calories/nutrients (generally from large organisms back to small organisms or like, the soil)
ALL parasites are important to the health of populations of the organisms they parasitize- without parasites, wasting diseases (etc.) would run rampant
ill be honest i dont know much about pinworms specifically but i'm sure that without them, hyperparasites that feed on them would die out. these are entire species we're talkin about here.
humans have been living with pinworms since the dawn of time and our evolution is inextricably linked with theirs.
they are living creatures and have shaped history. we would not have the immune systems we do without them- without pinworms growing alongside (or rather inside, as the case may be) us, humans might have suffered and died out due to weak immune systems and the introduction of a parasite that is less adapted to humans.
tl;dr: pinworms don't generally kill people. without pinworms we might not have the immune strength to fight off more serious infections. i say this with no malice: they dont need to earn your approval.

OH YEAH and yeah idk maybe the big skull fungus very well could be like, a god. that it could be like, the one god shroom. i remember people before sotf were wondering if the mushroomos infected sozo(nious) on purpose because of the implication that its a god was in the file name even before the lore tablets mentioned it.. i think. i havent seen them for myself either besides small glances IT ALSO HAS A WHITE STEM?? INSTEAD OF A BLACK ONE LIKE SOZO HAS?? like?? is it a different type? what if its from an ancient ancestor? whats going on, whats the relation of the mushroomos to these similar but different fungi? im honestly just as confused as you are. i think about these things about the game, especially with sozo, so often and im glad someone else also does just as much LMAO. at this rate ive posted 3 fucking anon asks in a row im so sorry
COTL DEVS ANSWER ME WHAT IS THE SKULL SUPPSOED TO BE
If it is a god shroom then everything explodes because It's A God Shroom it could do whatever it wants for any reason . In which Sozo has a god in his body/brain(???) and that's why it can drag him with it when it's revived. and that is a Theory I've proposed before but then it's like. WHY would a god shroom NOT infect more than just Sozo. Surely it wants to propagate right??? Otherwise why infect at all?? Unless it just wanted a vessel??
I mean fuck if we really want to go insane about it, the fungi that kills Sozo doesn't even look like the same fungi
Tumblr media
and it split the one on his head in HALF so like. I assume it's the same fungi and it just spores in a strange way, because otherwise we're going into complicated ass hyperparasitism territory (parasites that infect other parasites) which we COULD do but like WHY, but i mean.
like. maybe this is a neverending spiral of endless fungi. who knows Throws my hands into the air.
AND DIFFERENT STEM COLORS YOU'RE RIGHT I DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE?? COULD THEY BE DIFFERENT SPECIES THEN? BUT WHY ... Or is a maturity thing and maybe the one on Sozo is younger and will lose its darker colors as it ages????? I mean. And bear with me here, but. The shroom on the skull has fuckin age lines. So like. Old shroom? Old shroom gone white with age? Old? Shroom? Aged? Elderly shroom?
and don't even get me STARTED on the mushroomos who are themselves seemingly menticide (given they drop it when killed and sozo will eat them). like. the worldbuilding here is so fucked and I can only barely try to contain it into digestible boxes that make a vague amount of sense in my brain

Marietta spp. are the trippiest Aphelinids that I know of. The markings on the side of the gaster look a lot like graffiti letters in this particular species (which is unknown). There are so many crazy-looking wasps, a lot of them being extremely tiny. At about 1.1 mm long, what looks like a spec to the naked eye, turns out to be a living, flying kaleidoscope! They are hyperparasitic on Coccid parasitoids.

heres some splatoon flavored spec bio, just for fun. parasitic relatives of inklings ^_^ the second image is pre and post infection. more details under the keep reading so i wouldnt clog up everything.
a typically rare parasite that has exploded in numbers in urban areas, much to the concern of health officials. they superficially resemble planarian worms, or basal invertebrates, but mitochondrial DNA testing has confirmed these are close relatives of inklings! their simplistic body plan is a consequence of their parasitic lifestyle. their remaining tentacle, bearing a chitinous claw, is used to hook into a host's brain after they enter the body. while they lack separate humanoid and animal forms, they retain the fluidity their advanced siblings have, allowing them to surpass most lines of defense protecting the latter's brains. once they're in, they begin to secrete a heavily specialized neurotoxin that effectively lobotomizes the host, and they soon take over both mind and body. they're just as sapient, too, and if it wasn't for the distinctive symptoms they induce in their hosts, no one would ever notice their friend got brainwashed by a little squidworm. when there's multiple individuals in a host, they tend to form a unique neural network, where one "alpha" usually is the one controlling the body while the others serve as guiding voices in their head. they bicker a lot, unfortunately. some of those that are safely extracted express distress over their own parasitism; for obvious reasons they cannot survive independently without assistance, and if they want to experience the world like regular inkfish they have to infect someone. others are much more nonchalant about their nature, and have desires to infect specific targets—popular choices are various idols. Callie and Frye are the most attractive of them all, according to research. the smaller, featureless one is a male, only very recently discovered. until they found one attached to a female, they had assumed this species was intersex, and thought it was an instance of hyperparasitism before they realized they were the same species. they are even more degenerate than their female counterparts. they only have a mouth and a few organs intact, the essentials needed to live; though this is, unsurprisingly, not enough, with their lifespans ranging from an extensive 10 hours to 5 days once they mature. females, in comparison, can live just as long as inklings. their reproduction mechanisms are unclear, as the initial male scientists discovered died shortly after they located it. females also seem avoidant of them, instead congregating with other females when given the chance. some speculate that females rely on each other for reproduction through some unknown process, as it would explain why males are so seemingly useless and why each female isn't a clone of another; the presence of individuals with pigmentation that is only achieved through fertilization further supports this.
octarian equivalents are implied to exist, but squid researchers refuse to investigate.
informally in-universe they are referred to as wormlings, btw

NOTES OF DIAVOLA “DIABLO” PIEMAN
. . . turns out, cheeseslimes are mostly incapable of self-defense! (FAR MORE DANGEROUS THAN EXPECTED) Yep, they just tend to reproduce en masse to ensure the survival of their species. I actually haven’t managed to see where they store their eggs or young or whatever, but that’s not too big a deal! (WELL THAT WAS STUPID OF ME. IT ACTUALLY WAS THAT BIG A DEAL.) Their standard movement is fairly slow, as they don’t have visible limbs but for a few exceptions. They crawl along the ground and generally stay on it, though they do have the ability to stick to walls and climb them! I don’t see this quality used very often, but it’s pretty much whatever. (MISTAKE. THIS LETS THEM SEE POTENTIAL PREY FROM A DISTANCE.) Overall they’re pretty docile (THEY ARE ONLY DOCILE UNTIL THREATENED EN MASSE) and seem content to huddle inside the tower. (IT WAS KEEPING THEM SAFE!) ADDED NOTES POST-COLLAPSE: They bond with wildlife but seem to prefer creatures with increased ‘fitness’ - stronger, faster, able to fly, things like that. Anything that gives these guys a better chance to survive another day. They’re compatible with a lot of different species but to different extents. A slimed deer is a lot more jerky and unpredictable than a slimed bird, which makes the bird more. . . I guess a better host? We’re lucky we haven’t had many birds to worry about yet. Meanwhile, we have to keep our eyes on Cowboy and All-Smiles. Cowboy’s actually got enough mass and strength to not need a host, so naturally one of his own kind latched onto him! Hyperparasitic behavior isn’t anywhere near uncommon but it’s still interesting to observe up close, especially when it’s the same species and not for, uh, mating purposes like certain anglerfish. If Cowboy loses enough mass or otherwise weakens,

I wonder how Gonta and Swap!Hifumi would think of eachother?
both are thrilled they have someone to infodump about the more fucked up weird shit insects do to each other, they are talking about hyperparasitism and thrilled they dont need to tame it down to prevent discomfort

I've always wondered since humans obviously aren't indigenous to xen or the worlds that headcrabs come from, what do you think their natural prey is? I wonder if there's a particular creature they typically take host in, and what it looks like? Same with lightning dogs, I wonder if they just pick a body and revive it or if they have a preference
it's complicated to say because of the way xen works and the fact no species is native to it, so who knows what lived with headcrabs on xen, but we can assume whatever they evolved to parasite was fairly similiar to humans in shape and physiology. Seeing also that there is a gonarch on xen (and presumely more) means that they successefully adapted to xen and so they certainly parasite something there, i assume vortigaunts make good candidates as we haven't seen many other humanoids creatures. I admit i don't know enough about parasites, even though i love them and deeply fascinate me, but as far as i know many species specialize in parasitizing one specific species (not every parasite, just a chuck of them), and it seems like headcrabs are not picky at all and will try (and manage) to attach themselves to anything they can find, so good for them!. Same goes for lightning dogs, but the fact they seem to take so much advantage of discarded headcrabs' hosts makes me think they could have evolved alongside, i like the idea that lightning dogs are parasites not of humans (or whatever humanoid species they evolved to predate on) but of headcrabs themselves, hyperparasites. Burrowing in headcrabs' living hosts, zapping the headcrab dead and voila! nice and comby new home. Now WHY they would do that i don't know yet, reproduction? possibly, because they seem perfectly capable of providing for themselves without a host. I never really thought of the og prey animal headcrabs (and i suppose lightning dogs too) used to hunt, maybe one day i will draw something about it, it's pretty interesting and headrabs puzzle me all around.

to add to all the color fuckery,,, the gills of the god skull mushroom is a dark red color... like sozo's.
Tumblr media
and not like the mushroomos which is white.
Tumblr media
...also random thought but do you ever think about how the mushroomos are basically walking reproductive organs. walking talking... fruiting bodies.
I MEAN In this case at least we could argue it as potential evidence that the cordyceps (God shroom + Sozo's shroom) are separate from the menticide (Mushroomos).... but also it's just extended color fuckery, so WHO KNOWS!!!!!
As for the Mushroomos being walking talking fruiting bodies. Well. Yeah!!!!!! But also you're making me think of how they'd spore. Do they do it like Sozo's shroom does where it splits in half (if that is how it spores and that's not a hyperparasite)??? Because I cannot imagine that would be a Pleasant sight to see
