Plant of the Day
Thursday 14 September 2023
Today I noticed these decorative berries in a border probably on Hypericum ‘Hidcote’ (St John's wort), certainly a sign of autumn. This shrub can be pruned to a woody base so it behaves like an herbaceous perennial.

The man on the radio is lively and leading us through Monday morning at quite a lick. Weatherwise this channel is water wings and a boat until further notice. The traffic lady would have told us all about the cars, buses and lorries but technical difficulties mean we'll all just have to draw our own conclusions ... or just look out of the window.
Today's groaner: Mr Gates and Mr Schwarzenegger meet at a celebrity gathering and Mr Gates can't help but be curious to see if Mr Schwarzenegger has upgraded to the latest version of Windows. He approaches Arnie and asks "Have you tried the new Windows yet?" ... to which Arnie replies "No, not yet, I still love the old Vista baby!" ;-D badoom tish ... here all week!!
Gotta go go go this morning as Little Dude needs to get back to the vet for his first check up since his leg operation. He's being a suitably mimbly and pissed off pup. Can't blame him. Even at 13 he's got quite some pep in his step and isn't taking kindly to being confined.
Monday, Monday, Monday and the coffee is copious ...

This is an arrangement I made for $50 in about 20 minutes. The customer’s directions were to make it orange and they liked it a lot! I used two different colors of spray roses, tinted solidago/goldenrod, alstroemeria in the shade “Party”, dark red hypericum, orange santini poms, and white statice

Traffic in the distance and Julie Andrews has found herself a lonely goatherd to sing about ... the funeral of Shane McGowan is on the lips of strangers and friends alike... Benjamin Zephaniah has also left the stage, his poetry still hanging on the air ... the familiar faces of my menagerie as I go from outside to within ... these are the 'people' I truly know, the heady combination of those met and unmet bring pen to paper and words into play ...

#1953 - Hypericum perforatum - St. John's Wort
AKA perforate St John’s wort, klamath weed, tipton weed, goat weed, Hypericum officinale, H. perforatum var. perforatum, H. perforatum var. angustifolium, H. perforatum var. microphyllum, H. perforatum var. veronense, H. veronense, and H. vulgare.
Depending which source you consult, either amember of the member of the Mangosteen family Clusiaceae, the Hypericaceae, or the Guttiferae.
Native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa (a combination that shows up a lot in this blog). Now a weed in more than 20 countries. A significant pest in North America, where it had infested more than 2 million hectares by 1940, prior to control by Chrysolina beetles. A noxious weed in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania. Animal production losses in New South Wales have been estimated at $22.5 million a year.
The leaves and flowers contain hypericin, which leads to photo-sensitisation when eaten. Despite that it continues to be sold for its perceived horticultural and medicinal values. A lot of those medical uses are related to depression, but given the very wide range of other medical conditions it’s supposedly useful against, and the very serious risks of adverse interactions with other medications, I wouldn’t risk it myself.
