HYPERZINE: A CROSS THE ERAS (vol. 2) is out!
This Justice zine is themed around their discography- over 30 artists contributed works inspired by a song of their choice! ✝️
My song inspiration is Afterimage, my favorite from Hyperdrama, featuring Rimon! Inspired by ‘the red string of fate’ where one is destined to meet the other regardless of place, time, or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.
I also contributed two smaller drawings, inspired by ‘Heavy Metal’ and ‘ Love S.O.S.’.
Thank you Sketchmatorial and Celsiusbydesign for putting this all together! 💖 Can’t wait for the next one!

After 11 years of waiting, in ten days' time I'll finally be able to see Justice live. After weeks I've finally finished this pencil drawing, inspired by a photo taken during the era of my favourite album, Woman, which I treasure in my heart. I won't hide the fact that I'll always regret not having been able to go on tour at that time, but I'm really happy to finally be able to experience it.
The last few years have been difficult, and Hyperdrama has been one of the things that has helped me to rediscover a part of myself. It allowed me to travel back in time to when I was 16 (2013) and listening to their music, at a pretty chaotic time in my life.
This drawing took me weeks of work, but each line represents another step towards something special. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it! 🫶🏻🫧🥹

I've seen the new justice interview and now I wonder if xavier only has one outfit in his closet for the Hyperdrama era...
I mean,I only noticed that because Gaspard was in different outfits:
for the tv:
Tumblr media
for the sxsw:
Tumblr media
now at the bbc6:
Tumblr media
(I'm not counting those for the magazines because I think there are staff preparing the clothes for them for the photoshoot???)
Now I'm thinking about the fact that Xavier basically locked himself in when touring while Gaspard would go explore the city
Gaspard I encourage you to take your man for shopping jfc

Several weeks ago Justice returned with the announcement of their 4th LP, Hyperdrama, and a pair of new songs. The first single, "One Night/All Night", featuring Take Impala (aka Kevin Parker) is a predictably lackluster offering as tepid as Hallmark film beats with its dime a dozen stock drum and synth presets and shoehorned vocal melody. It's exactly the sort of sterile, post-Currents rehash a Kevin Parker feature entails these days. However, the 2nd song, "Generator", is a nasty, bare-knuckled house stomper that harkens back to the duo's halcyon Cross era, and is easily one of the best things they've released since that record.
The synths on "Generator" are sinister yet slick, and the bass actually pummels you instead of bobbing innocuously in the background. Here, the duo strike the right balance between immediacy and immolation. Not all of the transitions are as inspired as its opening and closing movements (the slap bass and string laden bridge in particular feels a little thin and tossed off), but for anyone who's enjoyed the duo's earliest work, it's hard to deny the visceral pleasures at the core of "Generator". It seems unlikely that the bulk of the album will land in this vein, but "Generator" is emblematic of what made this group so exciting in the first place, and it hopefully won't be the last time that we hear them operate in this mode.

Justice Releases Futuristic “Generator” Music Video
Tumblr media
The renowned French electronic pair, Justice, has unveiled a daring new video for "Generator," a track from their eagerly awaited album Hyperdrama, scheduled for release on April 26th through Ed Banger Records and Because Music. This video merges the concepts of human and machine, showcasing an intimate encounter between two robot-like beings, perfectly matching the song's fusion of disco and hardcore techno elements. As these robots peel away their layers to reveal their internal mechanics, Justice, alongside director Léa Ceheivi, delves into the exploration of sexuality in the digital era. "The idea was to echo a 2000s-era phenomenon like a sextape, but with a modern twist—capturing its raw aesthetic and unpredictability. So, in our narrative, AI robots too experience sex and the 'little death' of orgasm," shared Ceheivi. The official video can be viewed below: "Generator" was released alongside "One Night/All Night (starring Tame Impala)" last month, marking the announcement of "Hyperdrama," their first collection of new work in eight years. The release of "One Night/All Night" quickly demonstrated the strong demand for new Justice material, securing the top position on KCRW for two consecutive weeks and the #8 slot on Spotify’s Top Song Debut US chart. Furthermore, Justice is set to headline this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, introducing their new live performance setup for the first time. The festival is just one highlight in a year filled with scheduled performances, with more dates expected to be announced. SINGLE REVIEW: THE FIRST CHILD - SEVEN EYES
Tumblr media
Post Hardcore is a guiltless pleasure, a thing close to my heart.
Clearly I’m not the only one hankering for shamelessly almost-crying-singing and staring moodily out of windows on public transport; The First Child have produced “Seven Eyes”, their own metaphorical first child unto the world,  a world who will watch and listen to this shouty angelic weeping creature, and that’s where the metaphor really starts to fall apart. This particular strain of emo meets post hardcore from the late 2000s has such a characteristic energy to it that such a faithful execution warms my heart. Makes me feel like I’m back in high school, minus the nightmare attached. I guess it’s not a phase, mom. Before I go a word further, a disclaimer; I’m gonna be saying things like “post hardcore” and “emo” a whole bunch. “But Jai”, I hear you think, “that’s not real ‘x/y/z’ you handsome idiot”.  To which I remind you that these genres are decades old spectrums and include lots of bands that sound nothing like each other. I know Fugazi and Refused exist, but that’s not the post hardcore we’re talking about. Sunny Day Real Estate and The World Is A Beautiful Place etc. etc. are fine, sure, but don’t get mad because this “emo” doesn’t sound like it. Stuff can mean two things. Don’t @ me.
With that massive covering myself out of the way, I’m free to talk about how happy I am to hear an evocation of this particular spot in sad angsty music history. Straight out the gate ‘Seven Eyes’ cuts in with a soaring 6/8 almost-metalcore lead with that drops and sways, shamelessly dramatic and reminiscent of Relativity era Emarosa or some early material from The Used. The rough and textured cleans add to this hyperdrama before the screamed vocals, more of an anguished howl than an aggressive threatening sound. Vocally and lyrically, ’Seven Eyes´ delivers an open vulnerability and honest melancholy, consistently rough over the guitars similar which calls to mind the early teeth cutting albums of this particular wing of post hardcore. This continues into the chorus, which carries tinges of bands like Chiodos, The Receiving End of Sirens and, dare I bloody well say it, early Dance Gavin Dance. Dropping out into a more spacious breakdown backs off the energy of the chorus, which I like to imagine similarly to the defining moment between getting super upset about to cry, and actually crying. From there the song doesn’t let up much, building from the chorus into the same 6/8 flurry that climbs in tension like you’re running through a rainstorm and having flashbacks to your last relationship. Crucially, this is not a song about how tough you are.
And that could seem like a dig. But I don’t think it should, and here’s why. The corner of post hardcore/emo/whatever that this reminds me of was defined by actually being a space to openly and vulnerably whinge. Away from the posturing hardcore jocks acting like they’re so tough they’ve literally killed a man or metalhead guys who work in IT writing about butchering prostitutes. I mean absolutely no negative connotation in saying ’Seven Eyes’ makes me think of emo kids. The reason being that The First Child are well aware of this, and I think that’s what they’re going for. This is really the crux of why I like the song so much. It feels like a band motivated primarily to write music they themselves enjoy first and foremost, which affords their sound a type of transparency. The anguish communicated feels genuine, rather than jarring and dishonest.
I think The First Child are aiming for a genre sound because they honestly love it, and via that approach their music appeals to anyone who got into heavy music via the gateway-drug-for-the-ears that was post hardcore and alternative emo in the first decade of the century when they were the most emotionally honest and vulnerable. It’s a faithful homage to the bands that would go on to blow up Warped Tour, before also probably helping ruin Warped Tour who, for all their clichés, wrote some amazing music. It’s a breath of fresh air outside of pretending to be tough. Because like it or not, there’s a tiny emo inside all of us. We feed them on negative thoughts and passive aggression and sometimes nostalgia as either a punishment or a treat. ’Seven Eyes’ is like chicken soup for that specific corner of your soul.
Listen to it on the bus.
Stare out the window.
Pretend you’re in a monochrome.
