1, Benjamin

Not really surprisingly, yes! He would be a good partner. I think he would prefer someone who’s physically more active and thus be more influenced by that but I think he’d treat you right.

2, Camila

Not really…. She seems like someone who’d emotionally manipulate you just to see what she could get away with. Like Nicole from Class of ‘09

3, Zhang Lei

Probably idk 💀 He seems like he’d try to call you something suave like Darling or honey but fail and just seem like a little weirdo. Love him tho he’s silly!!!

I saw some people point out that Nobunaga lost his sword recently to the Heli-ly, but in recent chapters was shown still with it... So he has a power (?) to MAKE NEW SWORDS? But he can't just do it immediately. It doesn't sound like it's conjured (also he's an enhancer iirc so he WOULDN'T have good affinity for conjuration anyways) so I have... zero guesses as to how he made his sword. It's nice to finally have a hint at his abilities though since we know very little about him :)?

I already saw this in the raws but GOD. IT'S SO AWESOME. Look at the STAIRS, look at how they climb into the distance.

I do really like the Zakuro and Hinrigh conversation, trying to figure out what happened to her though. They're smart! They knew Lynch!!! They also know nen, and I love seeing characters try to puzzle out what nen ability could work--was it a disguise, or manipulation, etc etc and what did "Hisoka" want from doing this to Lynch. And now they're fully prepared to kill Bonolenov, and by extension, the Phantom Troupe... Yet another layer to the complicated mafia war

AND THEN WE GET TO CHROLLO'S SECTION. SO EXCITING.

There's so many answers here about Chrollo's goals on the Black Whale. We see exactly why he's here, what he wants to steal, where it is, how it affects his ability... He's planned it out so much. He even knows that Hisoka is on tier 1 and he could run into him...

And he's also planning to DIE if he has to. We know that the other Spiders want to kill Hisoka first in order to stop this, but Chrollo has already decided to go all in on not mattering as a person. He created the Spider, he will protect the Spider. He needs to kill Hisoka before they kill the rest of his friends, and his own life doesn't matter to him (same as we saw in Yorknew)!!! BUT I think the mention of him having "two conflicting emotions" is interesting because I think it might indicate that part of him also wants to stop this too. I doubt those emotions would be like... "rage and grief" which DO work together for this revenge plot. I think that he's going all in on the revenge against Hisoka to avoid thinking about this other conflicting emotion.

Going forward, Chrollo is going to fuck with the succession war. It sounds like he doesn't know about Kurapika's presence which coulddd cause some issues. I have a feeling they're going to run into each other one way or another.

Succession war-wise, upcoming plotlines and theories:

Kurapika's next nen class should have happened before the funeral procession, and during it, Sarahell (Camilla's have-not soldier) was supposed to attempt to curse Woble

The funeral procession is going to be an opportunity for Halkenburg-as-Balsamilco to use his ability, maybe? We don't know what his plan is in the 10 hours he has in Balsamilco's body, but either way it's going to bring Halkenburg back to tier 1, where he'll presumably have contact with Benjamin. If the theory that Halkenburg intends to put himself/one of his followers in Benjamin's body is correct, this could cause a major shift.

Melody, Kacho, and Kaiser haven't done their Prince Luzurus assassination yet, but that's supposed to happen. Killing him would also destabilize the mafia conflict even further and possible usher in martial law if Benjamin is able to.

Chrollo is going to try to break into the succession war and steal *the very things creating it.* This will likely destabilize things, or maybe give an opportunity for the princes to no longer need to be part of it? No idea.

Chrollo is also looking for a nen ability, and his stolen power lets him set conditions for an ability he wants to find. I didn't believe the theories from last chapter that Chrollo might end up wanting to steal one of Kurapika's abilities, but if Chrollo doesn't know about Kurapika and is only looking for a specific kind of ability... that seems like a perfect opportunity for Chrollo to get close to him, for better or for worse, attempting to steal judgement chain. I cannot imagine how difficult this would make things for Kurapika. Alternatively, he could go after a prince, or Kurapika's allies... There's a lot of options on tier 1, which is why this is scary

There's other plotlines going on, but these are immediate ones, and ones I have thoughts on right now.

It also seems clearer now that these coffins (?) are powering at least one of the treasures. Maybe the sword given to the winner of the succession war? Either way, it seems like the divine mummy is the one that needs to be destroyed in order for Kurapika's plan to save Woble to succeed, so either way Chrollo and Kurapika are aiming for the same thing now.

in all seriousness i can’t believe togashi just added plot 23. well this kind of replaces the existing beyond plot so whatever. more importantly though i can’t believe he got me instantly invested in a character who was a rando last chapter. i feel like we got a lot of who longhi is here…it reminds me when ikalgo came out of nowhere in the chimera ant arc and instantly joined the main cast. i really like how her “i have to tell the whole truth” condition of her nen contracts reflects how betrayed she feels by not knowing the truth of her origins this whole time.

incredible panels. that middle one of beyond obscuring her/taking over her thoughts is so good

currently balancing three theories in my head rn:

tserriednich is the “obvious” candidate for beyond’s kid due to his resemblance to a younger isaac and uncanny nen talent. this also kind of seems too obvious to me. (i do think theta is probably one of beyond’s kids, though- it’s her or one of tserriednich’s childhood friends.*)

duazul has not one but multiple kids with beyond. halkenburg bears enough of a resemblance to longhi that there’s a panel in this issue close up on her eyes that both myself and multiple other people i’ve seen mistook it for him, but tubeppa also has the high cheekbones. on top of that camilla’s plan with her have-nots is basically a copy of beyond’s plan, and she already knew nen. luzurus looks so much like brocco (the cha-r leader) that i figured he was his kid, but who knows. the only thing this doesn’t solve is how they were able to do the seed urn ceremony if they don’t have royal blood, which applies to the tserriednich theory too. which means my favorite theory i’ve seen so far is:

oito is beyond’s child. woble would then be a legitimate contender to the throne by blood and a member of beyond’s family. i don’t think oito would know this, and we know a little bit about her background- she grew up poor with multiple siblings- but i get the impression those are the kind of situations beyond was taking advantage of, unfortunately. oito appears to be in the 25-30 year old range, so the right age for beyond’s plan.

basically all of these have heavy drama potential, so they all seem valid depending on execution.

* edit: actually i’m thinking about it now and i’m like 75% sure that what’s going to happen is that morena is going to kidnap and use one of tserridnich’s childhood friends like she threatened to and that friend is going to just happen to be the one that’s beyond’s kid. and then everything asplode

I've realized that in doing my reviews for Undead Unluck and Ichi the Witch, I'm putting a lot of focus on remembering their stories, events and themes but not much on doing the same for the rest of Jump

In the interest of trying to improve my engagement and retention for Jump as a whole, I'm going to try summarizing the events and narrative or thematic significance of every chapter in this week's issue from memory (only looking up things like names for accuracy)

If this goes well/isn't too difficult to do, I may start to do this consistently, but we'll see. With that:

Toki Reads Shonen Jump 2024, issue #46

One Piece: Luffy and co. are revealed to have been captured by Road, Hajrudin's navigator, who doesn't accept that the New Giant Warrior Pirates are now subordinate to the Straw Hats. This may lead to internal conflicts within the Straw Hat Grand Fleet

HxH: Kaiser has Fugetsu visit each of the remaining Princes on the pretense of delivering letters from the deceased Kacho so that she can use her ability to infiltrate Prince Luzurus' room and assassinate him. I honestly have no idea how this will contribute, I feel very lost when reading HxH piecemeal

Mission Yozakura Family: The Yozakuras begin their battle with the Asa-possessed Taiyo. Things are going too well, so the Bad News phase is likely to come up soon

Undead Unluck: Julia fights her way to Apocalypse and nearly loses an arm in the process, but Apocalypse's vision of justice allows him to return to his senses and show Julia Juiz's memories in retaliation to Luna's attempts to cheat. Apocalypse's death may in and of itself be the trigger for Unjustice

Me & Roboco: Three brothers straight out of a romcom move next door and try to hit on Roboco, attracted by how unattracted she is to them and their one-note, stupid gags. This is a rare gag that actually puts Roboco on the backfoot

Sakamoto Days: Shin and Heisuke reach the maze-like B2 of the prison and meet Tenkyu, a member of Slur. Tenkyu likely wants to find Atari for Uzuki's sake, which will likely put him in conflict with Shin and Heisuke and make him the antagonist of the arc

Elusive Samurai: Shizuku's human emotions of love and jealousy allow her to manifest a human body at the cost of her divine powers, saving her from vanishing from their overuse. With Mima and Shizuku's divinity lost to both sides, the war between Tokiyuki and Takauji can no longer rely on miracles or divine protection

Witch Watch: Suzuka once again asks for help cheating on one of her grandmother's traditional arts tests, this time on haiku. Tenryuu's perceptions of haiku are changed in the process, though this likely won't have...too big of an effect on his character going forward

Blue Box: The boys basketball team goes out of their way to keep Taiki and Chinatsu separated out of envy, resulting in Taiki being locked in a shed. This moves the focus back to the main couple and adds a little bit of drama to their relationship, which has otherwise been going pretty swimmingly so far

Akane-Banashi: Shiguma is diagnosed with throat cancer and may lose his voice; Issho dissolves the Shiguma School and forcefully inducts Akane into his own school. Whether Issho plans to sabotage Akane's attempts to learn Shiguma's Art or aid in it is unclear, but Akane will certainly learn something useful for it in the process

Kill Blue: Shin sacrifices himself to save Juzo from losing the cavalry battle. The battle will likely conclude next chapter, as otherwise it would now be two-on-one

Nue's Exorcist: To better understand Rido's philosophy on love, Gakuro asks to be introduced to Rido's girlfriend; it turns out that she left him because she has a terminal illness. This will likely impact Gakuro's views on love and motivate him to make a decision on which girl to confess to - hopefully we'll take the polyamory route?

Kagurabachi: Hiruhiko continues to pressure Chihiro into risking the lives of civilians so he can convince him that they're both the same kind of psychopathic killers, but instead Chihiro finds a new way to use Enten to escape his trap. Chihiro's views on murder are further elaborated on as the idolization of the Swordbearers as the heroes of the war is criticized

Super Psychic Policeman Chojo: Chojo is plagued by visions of perverse tragedies occurring to the women around him that will supposedly damage their faith in him. An ominous voice tells him that fate cannot be avoided, suggesting that even after saving the women, his strange behavior in the meantime may have still hurt his standing

Astro Royale: Himuro's backup cops are revealed to be artificially created Asteroids, taking drugs to enhance their abilities that are specifically designed to synergize with Himuro's Astro. The possibility for artificial Asteroids raises the threat level beyond what people happened to wish for when they didn't know they'd get powers from doing so

Yokai Buster Murakami: To save Kuin from execution by a council of Gendo Ikari imposters, Murakami convinces each of them to take on a new, albeit kind of cliche persona; in the process, he establishes Kuin as the new Gendo-like leader of the exorcist organization. Whether Kuin will continue as the leader is questionable, but such a sudden rise in the ranks has troubling implications for the series' longevity

Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi: Kiyoshi decimates his proctor for the Grand Cross exam, denouncing the ideology that talent is necessary to reach that rank. Kiyoshi may or may not have precluded himself from being given Grand Cross rank in doing so, but his convictions to Effort and Friendship will likely prove far more valuable

Hima-Ten: Tenichi goes to Himari for advice on his potential relationship with Kanai, which she seems all too happy to give. With this early of a development, something is either going to get in Tenichi's way (likely the new girl, Kanna) OR they'll date for a short while and break up

Ichi the Witch: Ichi rejects Uroro's proposal to go on a witch hunt, earning the approval of the Witches Association; Ichi is finally given his iconic uniform, and Kumugi is forced to join Team Desscaras. This likely marks the end of the prologue, and the real story can finally begin

Shinobi Undercover: Hibari is troubled by her lack of friendship with Mukai, despite being assigned to be her best friend, and asks Yodaka's advice; receiving nothing helpful, Hibari just becomes confused until she's attacked by Miyake and needs to protect another classmate. The main difference between Hibari and Yodaka is likely that Hibari puts on an act while Yodaka is genuine, which she will likely learn through getting to go all out against Miyake

Hakutaku: To gain experience and get some networking in, Hikuma and Noto join a game jam; there, they meet Seo, a programmer, and likely their first major rival, Kitahara. This both builds the roster and establishes the flow of the series, as competitions like this will likely be a recurring element

I think I had a little trouble this time since it's my first attempt, but I remembered a lot more than I actually expected! If I do keep up with it, my hope is that I'll have better insight than I did this time, as I don't have a strong connection to a lot of these series and can't remember or articulate their themes as well as I can for my favorites

If I end up refining this process, great! If I end up dropping it, oh well! For what I got done this time, though, I did enjoy it, and I hope you do too!

my personal thoughts below the cut:

gonna say no to benjamin, personally. partially because i trust longhi's judgement on the matter, but mostly because it just would not make sense to go to such lengths for a person who is already at the top. all beyond would need to do was stack up the military and let benjamin's connections do the rest of the work. also, not very interesting story wise (would be kind of insane if nasubi's firstborn wasn't even his own lmao). 1/10

camilla actually has a lot going for her as a candidate. i think the fact that she already has curse users on her side speaks for itself- i could see beyond being the one to put that into place. everything we know about camilla makes it seem like she's not someone who's much into planning or relying on others. on the other hand, she would undoubtably be tough to control- not good for making beyond's puppet king dreams come true. i also saw someone say she bears a similar mentality to (isaac) netero and beyond: namely, a selfish pursuit of her own interests, and the will to do absolutely anything to accomplish them. 7/10

zhang lei: i'm already 90% sure he's meant to be the son of onior longbao, so he's really not a top candidate. not to mention the idea of him being such a senior prince who doesn't know nen or is surrounded by other competant people who know nen doesn't make me feel like he's being supported by beyond behind the scenes. 1/10

i'm hearing a lot of tserriednich talk, mostly due to his resemblance (debatable) to young netero and his vast nen potential. personally i'm not convinced: i think beyond would have put more defensive countermeasures into protecting his child; including, say... a loyal retinue of guards!? like if tserriednich wasn't such a monster at nen he would be dead right now. all of his guards seem either indifferent, scared, enjoy the way he enables violence, or actively plotting to kill him. not a whole lot of loyalty. also.... it would be kind of boring story-wise IMO. like he's already got so much going on, it makes the world feel kinda small. 4/10

i don't really see tubeppa as them either, mostly for the same reasons as zhang lei ; a senior prince who was never taught nen / or is guarded by skilled nen users? unlikely. although it would be a moment of supreme dramatic irony for longhi to have to kill her own prince. 3/10

tyson: kind of a dark horse candidate tbh. we also know so little about her!! and also, by extension, her faction. maybe there's a hidden nen user amongst her guards? i kinda wanna see it, mostly to watch her get roped further into the story. since kurapika already has eyes on her via izunavi, i've kind of been waiting for the moment she becomes more relevant to the plot. not to mention the fact that she and beyond both have cult leader vibes (or in beyond's case, are directly inspired by a cult leader). 6/10

i'm 90% sure luzurus is brocco li's son (same deal as ike zhang lei). but we know as little about him as we do tyson (although he is slowly becoming more relevant) so possibly the brocco li thing is a red herring? it's weird that he doesn't have any guards who know nen, but we also haven't seen enough of his faction to be a 100% certain of that... idk, i'm still gonna say 2/10

salé-salé: dead. 0/10

halkenburg: unlikely IMO, especially after 403. i think having TWO secret parents would be kind of overkill. i also think that, considering how much insight we've gotten into his own thoughts, that he would never bring up beyond or the hunter association or anything. 2/10

kacho: dead- but i give it a 1/10 in case of the twin thing.

i could see a world in which kacho and fugetsu are revealed to not really be twins (they do look completely different) but i think it's odd for her to be so unprotected and defenseless right now. beyond seems like the time to have more of a plan in place to defend his kids. could be interesting story wise, but... i'm not buying it. 3/10

momoze: dead. 0/10

marayam: this one makes sense to me. although he's a bit on the younger side, which means that beyond was a little late on the jump when it came to siring a prince, his youth does make him the perfect target for a bit of fatherly manipulation. and it would make sense for him not to know nen, because he's not really old enough to learn (unless beyond awakened him as a baby?) although even in that case we haven't gotten explicit confirmation (i.e. him or another charcater outright stating it) that he doesn't know nen. and there's something to be said about him having a super powerful spirit guardian beast that keeps growing... and yet, we've yet to see it's parasitic nature reflected in marayam's behavior. kid must either have a MASSIVE pool of aura or his nen beast is just built different. that also might explain why sevanti was so desperate to protect him. 8.5/10

woble: to be honest, the best case i've heard for woble is that silent majority was sent to PROTECT her by beyond (or someone in the hunter association). yes, it disrupted kurapika's nen class, but it's possible the assassin just disasgreed with kurapika's methods. so far, all of the people it's taken out have either been woble's enemies, or had the potential to be enemies. it speaks to this idea of a third party trying to assist a prince. there;s also the idea that perhaps woble's nen beast hasn't shown up yet because it might be a giveaway to beyond's identity, and for the same reasons as maryam it would explain why she doesn'st know nen. also, we already have a confimed beyond spy on her team: bill ( love you bill, i don't think you want to hurt the baby- but maybe you're being manipulated without knowing it). on the other hand, the fact that oito seems completely unaware of beyond's plan speaks to her either lying (unlikely IMO, i just didn't get that vibe from the panel) or she.. didn't know. which is terrible in it's own way but also definitely something he would do. from a story perspective, it would turn longhi into an enemy, which would be sad, but good potential for drama. 8/10

other: i think everything going for woble goes just as well for oito. we don't know exacly how old she is, but considering the fact that beyond is probably older than he looks it's safe to say it isn't completely impossible. on the other hand, there is the fact that she's from meteor city.. and the middle child of five. perhaps she was planted there for her own safety, until it came time for her to meet the king? i also wouldn't put it beyond nasubi to have struck a deal with beyond. and i also think it's possible that she has no idea who her father is, and beyond kept her in the dark so as to better control her, but positioned people around her as protection. also, it would be cool. 8/10

Bad HxH predictions based off of rereading the recent story plot when I was supposed to be studying. Spoilers up to 402

Hisoka becomes a prince guard. Kurapika is very frustrated his (in law?) is now part of the competition. Maybe he guards Woble that would be fun

Woble is Beyond's secret "prince" and Oito is hiding it because she is aware of the stakes. (Based off of: drama and how Beyond's body is blocking Oito's during the opening ceremony shot. Also Beyond's "prince" has to be someone who could not reasonably be expected to win on their own. So someone from the younger group.)

My back-up guess is Marayam (13th), since his mother was willing to immediately sacrifice his sister for him. Kind of fucked up honestly. And Togashi likes to pick unusual answers to literary questions.

For a hot second I thought it could be the twins, because they got a lot of extra protection from the Justice Bureau, but then one went and died. So. Maybe not.

Halkenburg (9th) body thefts Balso. Kills Benjamin (1st). Halk permanently loses his own body to the bioweapon. Maybe even thefts Benjamin's?

Tubeppa (5th) betrays her own contract, sets off her own nen beast's conditions. Unclear what that is right now

Melody and Fugetsu (11th) are tricking Kaiser. Not entirely sure if they are testing his allegiance or if they already know for sure he's the cause of the problem. (Based off of: we already know that's not how her ability works. She's already teleported to unknown locations before. Besides, it's OOC for Melody to condone murder. And the logic for why we're suspecting Luzurus (7th) is bonkers.)

Separate but related: Kaiser is a Pariston spy. That's why he's overly invested in "helping". He's trying to get rid of the other princes to help secure Beyond's "prince". Not sure if he thinks going along with Melody's plan will help do that or if he's trying to implicate Fugetsu further

Separate but related: Kaiser does love Melody and isn't completely lying? Call that wanting people to love Melody the most precious creature in the world. Please let that be true even if Kaiser is an enemy spy

Melody added other bits of information to the letter sent to Kurapika including her plan to trick Kaiser and the truth about Kacho's (10th) nen beast situation. This is not known to Kaiser, who fed Fugetsu different information to share with Kurapika, which might be related to the other prince's mafia ties. Since Kurapika already knows about the Tserriednich's (4th) mafia ties, I would put money on Zhang Lei's (3rd) since it would give him leverage over his alliance.

Waburu/Woble -> I’m gonna be honest with you idk where the hell that name could have come from. english sounding anyway if woble/wobble is the correct interpretation of the japanese katakana. Not that it should matter since woble is most definitely oito’s child and there’s nothing special/hidden about her.

In the context of the possible Beyond child among the princes and the Halkenburg reveal, of who is who’s biological child/parent, what we learn from this analysis is that

1st queen Unma and 2nd queen Duazul both have similar european and germanic sounding names for their princes, so not much we can induce there. For example Benjamin and Camilla both sound like they could have the same mom based on their names, when you compare them to other queens and their child(ren). Yet it’s basically certain that benjamin is unma’s child, and camilla duazul’s. And Tserriednich and Halkenburg both having germanic sounding names was thought of as a hint to them having the same mother who named them, but with Benjamin’s name being that, the thought doesn’t amount to much more.

Considering both names and physical resemblance, with the question of whether they are biological mother/child:
