my friend finished CAA for the first time and we got to talking and it ended with me sending her a small essay so i’m sticking it here just to save it! more under cut, it’s very choppy and references prior messages because i texted all of it to her sdkfjdsl i don’t deserve her

YESS i agree that the moment the ants ceased to fully be ants was when the queen consumed humans who had strong desires to protect/love (so YESSS i fully believe this is why togashi spends so much time building up colt's character, his relationship with his sister, and his motivation for protecting the queen, despite the fact that he's more of a minor character)

i really think this whole arc is togashi exploring what it means to be human!! i've actually had a similar discussion with my friend mary, and she pointed out that a common way to explore humanity from an outside perspective is through sci-fi and fantasy!! so like aliens, fairies, immortal beings--all kinds of non-human things looking at us and going 'what the fuck' lmaoo

and for me that's what the central question of this arc is! namely: what are the things that make us human, and are those parts ultimately good or bad?

so yes!! 1. individuality!!

individuality is the basis for all our different ways of seeing and interacting with the world and others around us; hence why we see honestly more of the ant's perspective during this arc; the protagonists almost take a back seat for many of the episodes!! (all the ants who wanted to become king, hagya's pride, colt's loyalty, meleoron's sense of justice, ikalgo's realization sparked by newfound friendship with killua, SO many fucking welfin monologues LMAO etc)

so YES they are ants!! but are they more human, or more ant? and this is where i think it gets super interesting, and also a little (a lot) heartbreaking!!

because you're goddamn right, "killing for sport" wasn't a thing that didn't start happening in the ranks *until the ants became more human*

so 2. cruelty

humans are EVIL and fucking suck lmfao. by contrast, the queen is not evil per se, it's just that the very nature of her existence requires that she eat other organisms to survive and carry on her species. the drones don't kill for sport at the beginning; they feel no need to. But the second they eat the members of NGL (who have done some evil shit), the ants become something else that no one expected (also why kite underestimated them, also why he died, but gon ofc will blame it on himself and more on that later bc i'ms ad)

so CRUELTY!! also why netero tells meruem "you know nothing of the bottomless malice of the human heart little ant," because he knew that meruem was willing to solve this with a discussion instead of in a fight, and yet because he had a job to do, he refused. (also why the narrator said that if they attacked while the king was taking care of komugi, they would've lost all motivation for their purpose, which lowkey they kinda had by that point!)

kind of in a similar vein and you're RIGHTTT, gon is directly paralleled with the king (god i love hiyori ittai, highly recommend looking up the lyrics bc "two sides of the same coin" is such a simple metaphor that conveys everything PERFECTLY i love hxh)

he threatens to kill komugi, an innocent bystander. he pushes away killua with the words that killua is most afraid to hear (because homeboy's literal identity and self-worth at this point are tied inextricably with his friendship with gon and the very moment gon put that distance between them killua is cut off from the person he relies on for his sense of self, which. now i'm in my killugon feels ANYWAY). 

he goes on a self-destructive rampage fueled only by guilt and rage and has no regard whatsoever for the consequences, and it's so damn heartbreaking bc at the end of the day *he's just a fucking kid* like. there's the subversion!! put superpowered shounen kids in a war, and what you get?? traumatized child soliders!! hooray

so, /yes/, humans are cruel and awful and at the end of the day, meruem and his guards won, because 1. pitou succeeded in making sure gon would never touch the king, 2. pouf realized that he had served his king well and did not regret his actions 3. youpi gained an understanding of what it meant to have honor in battle when he spared morel and knuckle (also why knuckle didn't want to fight him anymore), and finally 4. the king gained a purpose and something to enjoy and someone to love

which brings me (holy shit this is long i'm sosorry sjdklfj) to the last thing i think togashi wants to convey about humanity with this arc!! 3. love 

i LOVEEEE "that sometimes you're not put on this earth to rule or be good at on specific thing, but you're here to make an impact on the people around you" because /yes/ so much yes

ultimately, it is komugi who saves everything. in a way i feel like she embodies the human condition (or at least, that's how meruem first sees her): she is physically weak, a crybaby, blundering and unable to see how she has been manipulated her whole life. and yet she kicks his ninja turtle ass in a single thing, and it is enough. which is why he tells netero he has realized that strength lies in more than physical power! it is through her, a human, that he learns what it means to love something, to love another, and to love being alive!! 

b/c you're /right/, "who would he be if he wasn't king?" what do you do when you realize you've been assigned a purpose but have no name for others to call you by? basically meruem learns the best that humanity has to offer, which is love!! ig what's so hecking heartbreaking is that he also learns the worst (ie rose bomb) and it's all taken from him in the end

(also fun parallels between komugi and killua bc killua's mental breakdown was the catalyst for palm's awakening from pouf's brainwashing, his love for his friend and his pain that he couldn't do anything all help her snap out of it and remember what it means to have mercy)

which brings me to my final point!! togashi takes all this, looks us in the eye and says 

4. we are all of these things (and probably more, although that's a discussion for another day jsdklfsj)

it doesn't matter who was ant and who was human, or who was both, bc in the end the worst of humanity is so monstrous that it would look at someone just beginning to love and kill it simply because it is easier (ofc like meruem’s plan to better the world probably had its pitfalls but i mean homie was willing to at least have an honest discussion about it). it would take advantage of a 12 year old boy's guilt and grief and anger to fight in a war that grown ass men are not able to stomach. it would take an innocent bystander who was raised to believe she had no value outside her ability to play a game and allow her to find a true friend, and then end that too.

and yet!!! the best of humanity is there too!! "you're here to make an impact on the people around you" like YESSSS sometimes you awaken something in you so strong and full of light and hope that you break out of the fear and fight with everything you've got!! (shoot heh, but also killua hehe) sometimes you find a friend and you decide to throw it all away just to follow them, because you had nothing before!! (ikalgo heh) sometimes you realize that we are not perfect, and you choose to love anyway (reina reunion scene)!! and sometimes when you realize that your time on earth is limited, you just wanna play a game with the one you love most and hold their hand in your dying moments!! 

so in the end i think it's a paradox; neither ant nor human win bc humanity is cruel and the machinations of nature cannot be blamed, but at the same time *both* the unstoppable nature of things and the love that we are capable of triumph, because meruem and komugi choose to love and die together.
