This is how I typically depict the nyos! As you can see, some are changed more than others.

Outfits are just for fun, I draw them differently all the time.

Remember, HWS Redesign Week starts January 25th!

All days are free days! You can redesign any canon character (whether you think they should look different or you just want to redesign them for fun)!

That includes:

-Any nationverse characters (e.g.) Russia, Scotland, Norway). Give them beards, change their hair, their skin, their facial features, etc!

-Any nyo character. Make them more similar to their og counterparts or make them completely different! Maybe you want to give them a different outfit or hairstyle. Alter whatever you like.

-Any nekotalia cat. Change the breed or the colour!

-You're also welcome to redo any of the characters' canon AU outfits (e.g. Cardverse, Wondertalia, Fairy Tales) instead of redesigning the character themselves, if you'd prefer!

Redesigns of fem!america and liechtenstein for the HWS redesign week from @hwsevents. I sadly forgot to draw the little braid (germania style) I had in mind for liechtenstein. A reference to her other hairstyle.

I do like liechtenstein's canon design but the dress feels so old fashioned and this is just a modern twist. I removed the ribbon in her hair, but it's not gone. It's in her shirt. (which itself turned out darker than I wanted it to.)

America somehow turned out looking like such an adult. No idea how I pulled that one off.

So here’s my final entry! The Nordics! Or at least most of them!

I excluded Denmark because I’m not sure if I’m even going to redesign him for Alt-talia yet, so here’s Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Iceland.

So for Sweden, the main difference is that I made his eyes bigger. I made him look softer basically. And it worked! I’m glad with the results. He looks like a cute nerd, lol. I made him significantly older as well.

Finland’s appearance is the most changed; I made his eyes half-lidded and this blue-grey color (blue because of his lakes and grey because vibes, and apparently that’s a more common eye color there), made him taller, made his bangs somewhat rougher, and gave him stubble. I generally tried to give him a more stoic air, bringing him in line to how the Finns see themselves; while his face was shaded originally, a friend of mine told me that was overdoing it, so I made his face that of an anime deadpan stoic. Also I kind of really disliked the purple eyes; they just stick out so much when everyone else has natural colors!

Norway is a simple eye color change. I gave him deep blue eyes, invoking his fjords, instead of the unnatural purple eyes. I also changed his personality a bit. He’s a mix between canon Norway and Scandinavia and the World Norway basically; generally a very chill, if shy, quiet person. He’s much less violent around Denmark too.

Iceland also gets eye color change; he gets bright blue eyes with a teal center, and they flash green like an aurora borealis when he’s in high spirits. I also made him older (like everyone), taller, and changed his hair color to platinum blond. The end result was very satisfying! He just screams “I’m Iceland!” lol. He’s also much more cheerful, as you can see; the national catchphrase is “It will sort itself out!”, so Alt-Iceland is much more of an optimist than the angsty boi all of you know. Also I originally made him 173 cm because I appeared to have mistook the average height of the whole population for the average male height. Whoops! Nothing some Photoshop couldn’t fix though. I still made him somewhat shorter than the average height, despite making him grow significantly, because of vibes though. He’s still super tall. I forgot the Puffin. Whoops. Also the suit he has in canon just… Does not suit Iceland. They didn’t even have concept of formalities until fairly recently.

So that’s a wrap! Thanks hwsevents! And let’s just hope more join next year… I’ll be sure to come back!

I was thinking about this again today. I have a friend I share some classes with who grew up in a culture where “ahead is behind” and “on track is failure” and I’ve been sitting with her between classes doing hw and stuff (for like 4 hours 2ce/week) and it’s so EASY to get pulled into her anxiety and the feeling of “not enough time.”

And please don’t say anything about “not letting it get to me” or whatever. It’s something I can’t shut off rn (though I’m working to figure out how).

But like WE’RE LIKE 22 OKAY??? There is SO much time!!! And we even have a prof that majored in music performance and went into writng, then like social media, then digital media, and is currently a prof/instructional restructuring person (whatever it’s called when you help instructors to redesign teaching methods to help students achieve learning goals better) and is THRIVING!! Like you don’t always toss your cap and catch your dream job right off the bat and that’s OKAY!! But all this idealism that colleges push on us is sooo unhealthy and so we’re just all constantly stuck in that Emergency echo chamber of “not good enough,” “not ready,” “no one will hire you” and all that other garbage.

And worse! We don’t even get good teachers to help us along most of the time!

Well that’s not true. I’ve had many WONDERFUL teachers, but they don’t earn what they deserve and burnout is SO REAL in the education industry. Education industry. How awful is that phrase. My brother, a new teacher this year, has had a (tenured) coworker tell him “only 11 years till retirement.”

But there are some who still have life. Who haven’t been wrung out by this advertised Emergency of our generation (geez, it’s like a Cold War against OURSELVES for goodness sake!). Those teachers carry so many student to the finish line, and I think I’ll cry a bit, I’m so thankful for them.

Idk if this has gotten incomprehensible or not yet, but I’ll stop here. Thank you, teachers. You carry so much of us for our poor burned out little children souls (yes, children. We lose 75% of our childhood to rigorous education and it’s that side of us that cries for rest).

Warning: this is about the TMBS Emergency and it got a little depressing, don’t read if you’re not in a good headspace to think about the world we currently live in.

I’m sure someone’s done this, but can we talk about The Emergency more?

Like this story was released at a time where there is SO MUCH fear mongering and the underlying conflict is that people are being pumped full of news telling them that everything is hopeless and it’s working.

Even Ms. Perumal is dragged back by it. There’s the conversation between those two workers that Milligan and the kids overhear about the one person having multiple panic attacks in the last few days or something and the other person treats it like it’s NORMAL.

Can we talk about how freakishly close to our daily lives this is?? Like I don’t tell my friends “oh yeah, me too” when they say stuff like that but that’s only because I’m in a decent place rn.

The amount of times in college where I’ve laughed when someone says they cried themselves to sleep from stress is appalling. I literally had a friend (jokingly—kind of) tell me he feels like he’s being waterboarded by his classes and I laughed in his face.

How fucking AWFUL is that??? Like, my shitty response aside, this is NORMAL CONVERSATION for people our age and it’s so good that we’re destigmatizing mental health issues, but holy fuck have we overshot our mark in some regards.

(To be clear, there is still MUCH work needed to help those conversations become more normal and acceptable to take mental health days and have accommodations, etc.)

But guys what is going on??

It’s like The Emergency and it’s working.

How many of you reading this are Americans who feel pinned into your current financial situation or buried under unimaginable debt while working multiple jobs or constantly anxious with no capacity to help yourself because it’s so relentless and help isn’t coming??

We don’t have a Mr. Benedict and his wonderful team. We don’t have one Big Bad Guy to stop this oppressive depression keeping us down or stifling the economy.

What do we do, guys?

How do we make the world better for ourselves and the people we love?

Visual Language Week 3 HW: Typography Part 1

Our assignment this week was to redesign a boarding pass, and in particular a very poorly designed boarding pass that Katherine Dillon had received:

I started by looking at the list of words and elements we had to use in the design of the boarding pass. I first started making a hierarchical list of the most important information, but I then realized that the importance of information is temporal when you’re at the airport. Here are the time categories I created:

En Route to Airport: When you are on your way to the airport, you need to know the departure airport (some cities have more than one), the airline and the date (I’ve heard of people booking flights on the wrong days!).

Check in/Boarding: Then, once you’re at the airport, you need to know your flight number, boarding time, departure time and gate.

Boarding/On Flight: Once you’ve found your gate and are waiting to board, you need to know your seat number and boarding zone.

Official use: Finally, there was a category of information that only the airport officials need to know, including the barcodes.

In Illustrator I divided the main part of the ticket (excluding the stub) into three columns and six rows so that I could overlay three boxes for these categories and keep a strip on top for the passenger’s name and precheck status and a strip on the bottom for the information for the airlines.

Then I made rounded white rectangles (too match the shape of the boarding pass) for the different information groups.

I started filling in each section with the information I had categorized into that group. For each grouping I also added a symbol in the upper left-hand corner. This looks very different than current airline tickets, but my thinking was that if this became a standard format, people would know which symbol to look for to get the information they needed, which would help them find the information more quickly. For the stub, I tried to include only the most important and necessary information since there wasn’t much room.

I chose Arial for the font because it is a popular font similar to Helvetica (another ubiquitous font as we talked about in class) which means that people are familiar with it and therefore probably won’t notice it. It’s a boring choice, but I hoped that this decision would let people pay attention to the information rather than the font.

For the size of the font, I somewhat arbitrarily started making the large letters at 21pt font because it seemed to fit nicely in my grid, so I then made the smaller version of the font half the size at 10pt. I decided to stay with only these two size to keep it simple.

In terms of capitalization, I made the boarding pass title and name up top in lowercase for readability, but all other font is in uppercase (except the “subject to change” note at the bottom). I thought about making the destinations in lowercase lettering, but I think people are used to seeing uppercase in this context. I was hesitant to bold some of the words, but I tried it out and kept it because I think with so much information on one sheet it helped draw the eye to the most important information.

Finally, I added information on the flight duration because that’s always something I want to know but hate figuring out with the time changes!

My Nyo Designs

This is how I typically depict the nyos! As you can see, some are changed more than others.

Outfits are just for fun, I draw them differently all the time.

Last year I focused a lot on how I’d redesign the nyos from scratch if they were entirely different people, and I decided I’d include one of the designs again along with my other type of redesign, the one based on the original male version!

Last year during the 25th-31st I did an event called HWS Redesign Week where basically you could just redesign any Hetalia character you wanted. No prompts, just go wild. Redesign Russia, nyo America, Greece, nyo England, Norway, Wales, nyo China, New Zealand, anyone! As long as they're a canon character with an existing design.

Would anyone be interested in me doing that again? Same dates?
