we have a saying in the balkans, na ideale se samo hrabri pale; za ideale ginu samo budale, which roughly translates to "only the brave get excited over ideals; only the idiots die for the ideals". also gronf from alan ford once said "it's better to cowardly run away than to die heroically". also kōichi shikishima thought he should have died when he disregarded his duty, to die as a kamikaze pilot when all he wanted was to live but seiji akitsu said "not fighting in a war is something to be proud of. we leave you the future" to shirō mizushima and sōsaku tachibana made kōichi an ejection mechanism in the plane and saved him after everything, that saved him because his death would have been pointless and he chose to live. he chose to pull that lever and he chose to live. and the point is to fucking live. there is no honour in a pointless death for some abstract ideals of an imperial force. duty to a murderous exploitative regime is no duty to honour. the only thing worth fighting for in this life is to live. the best thing you can do is live, no matter what. just live. that is enough.
