Yesterday my husfriend killed his phone dead by dropping it in hot salty water and not immediately turning it off for 36 hours

After his mantrum passed sufficiently, his decision was to get an entire brand new phone for £ridiculous rather than a refurbished one for £165 (don't ask me, I'm not him), which meant going to the phone shop and proving he had an account

Unfortunately, because his existing phone was, as previously mentioned, stone dead, he had to put his SIM in my phone and follow links to websites. (As he is a man who loves to give all his data to any tech company that wants it, the fact my browser is FF with a lot of anti tracking extensions was a whole drama I won't go into)

So, anyway, I'd been reading my silly boys and angst (and festive smut lbr) and had an open tab of everyone's favourite place on the Internet, the archive of our own

Had to disable many of the extensions to allow the documents to load (ref prev paranthetical drama), which demonstrated my partner does not know how to exit an app on a phone and also, for some reason, ensured he showed all my open tabs to the retail assistant

Bless her forever for saying "some light reading" when she immediately recognised the default Ao3 skin while I tried to atomise my entire body in the EE shop as a new year miracle

My husband and husfriend are two very different people, but they do share a shit ton of similarities. Both were in Scouts, both played the Sax, both were in Track&Field, both were in the Marine Corps in the same unit, both reached the rank of Corporal when they got out after serving four years, both wear the same shirt and shoe size, both are roughly 6', both need glasses, both are nerdy ass gamers and love table top games, both are country boys who love guns and camping... you get the picture. Ahh thanks for asking, CCF. Guess I should hop on this nice ask train, maybe with the same question. It’s a good one. Do you mind? There are too many from my most recent trip abroad, especially some lovely memories I made in Florence, Gothenburg, and ENGLAND seeing some very special people. 🥰

But there’s a travel memory that is seared into my brain from a trip to Florence with my then-husband. The weather was hot. So. Damn. Hot. Hazy hot and humid. Deep summer in Italy. It was nighttime and it was just so hot. No AC in the pension. We were wiped. Even water wasn’t doing the job.

We decided to go outside to cool off. As if that was really possible. But outside was better than inside. Kind of.

As luck would have it, we came across a vendor selling ice-cold, cut-up watermelon. As you may know, I LOVE watermelon in all its forms. 😏 But this shit was like manna from heaven. It LITERALLY hit the spot - in my mouth, my throat, my chest, my gut. My heart and soul, if I’m being totally honest. I needed it so much. I didn’t know I needed it, but I did.

It was a religious experience like none other experienced by any pilgrim in that city. I desperately love Florence for its art, but this was beautiful. I’m separated from my husfriend now, but we’ll always have that cold watermelon. 🍉
