update: my school was damaged. it was the worst in the county, according to the supernintendo (thanks simpsons i will always call him that). that said, they were working their asses off over the past 5 days because we are back. students return tomorrow.
our house sustained minimal damage. the big worry was The Tree that i'm sure i mention during every storm. i wasn't able to come back right after the storm passed because the roads were in terrible shape (and i'd paid for the hotel through friday anyway). had a lot of anxiety until the roommate had a family member drive by to check the house.
we got power back on sunday. some things are slowly returning to normal. there's debris everywhere. i am very, very lucky. many others were not. i saw the roof rip off of tropicana field (where the rays play) and my heart sank. this was The Big One and once again it was not technically a direct hit on our area. we dodged. again. can't help feeling that eventually, all of our luck is gonna run out.
anyway. i'm physically unhurt, and my belongings are intact.
mentally? ooooooh babe we don't have time lol
now i'm just ready to see my kids and check on them. then finally my last bit of worry can (maybe) go away.
checking in briefly -
am safe from milton. we are at least out through the rest of this week. no word on next week yet. i miss my kids. and i hope they're ok.

The day after hurricane Milton
Lake rose to about 2 feet from one part of the house, and street flooding was about 4 feet from the house in front.
Rain dripped through the top of a double door on the front of the house. A small amount...
And as you see, the silk oak lost its top, and the mulberry lost a large branch.
So grateful we are all okay 💜🦋💜

October 10th - Always a part of me
It’s October 10th, 2024; We have an original pop song for ALL. Sung by Julie Manners, it still brings a tear to our eyes. It’s a fantasy song, but currently, I apply some of the lyrics to our former home of Florida. Watching all of the devastation in YouTube videos this morning, put us in a melancholy mood. Lovely production on this tune from Steven Cooper of Nashville, TN. I love his piano…

On Wednesday, nearly 2,000 flights within, into or out of the United States were canceled, according to the tracking service FlightAware. That includes over 380 flights canceled at Tampa International Airport which is closed."

Pre-Milton Hurricane Post
I've been making hurricane prep so I figure I might as well make the obiligitory tumblr post.
"Are you evacuating?"
I'm in the center of the state, which is where we evacuate the coastal areas to. My home isn't likely to flood, though the roads around me might. The biggest dangers are flying debris or a tornado strike.
I'm going to lose power. That's not even a question at this point. And with the aftermath of Helene still underway, it may be days before everything is restored. So, I may be offline for a few days. Though if we keep cell service, I can do what we all do - use the car as a giant phone charger.
I raided my recycling bin and filled every usable bottle with drinking water. I have flashlights, batteries, and candles if needed. And enough cheese and bread to make sandwiches for a week if needed. Also chocolate chip cookies. They seemed very important when I was making my hurricane supply run.
I'll be filling the bathtub with water. That's a backup to flush the toilet with if needed. (Also where store any alligators that the wind flings at our doors.)
I've also downloaded some of my favorite comfort mystery shows to a couple of Kindles along with a ton of books. And I have enough yarn to keep knitting for, umm, a decade or so.
To everyone else in the path - Stay Safe!

HURRICANE HELENE AND MILTON RELIEF
As most of you know, I was born and raised in South Florida, and until recently, lived in central Florida. I want to provide some donation resources in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. There are a number of ways to help both from afar and locally. If you can't help - that is okay. This is not an economy made for being able to help others, so feel free to spread resources/awareness and let me know of any additional resources I can add here.
Note: This is not an exhaustive list of ways to help those suffering from the effects of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, and many of these are Florida-based because it's what I'm familiar with. If you know of resources specific to the Carolinas and areas in Appalachia that I can add, please let me know!
AMERICAN RED CROSS
Monetary Donation | Find A Local Blood Drive
VOLUNTEER FLORIDA
Donate to the Florida Disaster Fund
UNITED WAY
Donate for Hurricane Relief
FEEDING TAMPA BAY
Donate to help feed victims of hurricanes
WE ARE ST. PETE
Donate for Hurricane Relief
AMERICARES
Donate for Hurricane Helene Relief
GREATER GOOD CHARITIES
Donate for Hurricane Helen and Hurricane Milton Relief
HUMANE SOCIETIES
Florida Humane Society | Humane Society Tampa Bay | Humane Society Sarasota | Humane Society Pinellas | Humane Society Polk County |
SALVATION ARMY
Donate for Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton Relief
FEMA
Email [email protected] for in-kind donations
MUTUAL AID DISASTER RELIEF
Donate to Hurricane Recovery
BELOVED ASHEVILLE
Donate for Hurricane Helene Relief in Asheville
COLLECTION SITES
A ton of different places in the south will have donation drives/collection sites to drop off donation materials. You'll have to do some research wherever you are locally, but if you live near a sports team, event stadium, or a YMCA in the south, they will most likely host relief drives in their parking lots!

hello! it seems every time i post something has happened :,) unfortunately this time is the same.
just giving a heads up to everyone that as a florida resident i’m in the direct path of hurricane milton, which is now a category 5 with 190 mph winds.
SO! i know for sure that i will be dealing with the aftermath like crazy with the power, flooding, debris, all that fun stuff. it’s a pretty dangerous situation considering i’m quite literally where it’s heading towards, but i wanted to come on and tell you all that in case i disappear by chance to let you know i’m alive and well lmaoaoao 😭 i’m lowkey scared but it’s fine. i live in an apartment with my boyfriend and we can’t do much besides sit here and wait it out when it comes.
when everything dies down and my power (if it goes out. which is will. 😀) comes back on, i’ll be back to tell the taleee. anyway i love u guys, forgive me if i disappear for a bit until it’s over. MWAH.

What we know about Hurricane Milton
Hurricane Milton made landfall as a Category 3 storm at 8:30 p.m. ET yesterday near Siesta Key, Florida, a barrier island next to Sarasota. The storm has since moved out to sea.
At least 10 people have been confirmed dead in the storm's aftermath. Five deaths have been confirmed in St. Lucie County on Florida's Atlantic coast, where officials said tornadoes touched down. St. Petersburg police confirmed there were two storm-related deaths in their city. Volusia County Sheriff Michael J. Chitwood confirmed three people died in his jurisdiction.
Some 11 million people are at risk of flash and river flooding and a record number of tornadoes caused widespread damage yesterday.
More than 3.4 million energy customers were without electricity in Florida around 11:50 a.m. ET, according to poweroutage.us.
President Joe Biden said he pre-deployed thousands of federal personnel to areas affected by the storm, including more than 1,000 Coast Guard members.
A complication in the first responder efforts:
There are so many disasters and tragedies happening around the world—including Hurricane Helene two weeks ago, even—I know that. But this is the one closest to me, so my eye is on it. I hope you’re all okay out there, that you got to safety yesterday and you’re getting through it okay, relatively, right now.
