does it ever happen to you when the story itself sort of decides what will happen next? e.g you have a plan for what a dialogue will turn into, but that dialogue refuses to be written or goes in an opposite direction. what do you do then, force the story or let it flow like it wants to?

This is actually one of the reasons—the other major one is lack of free time—why chapters can take so long.

I. Really. Hate. Dialogues.

When I have to sit down and actually plan them on spot I end up opening a bottle of wine, wandering around my apartment and questioning all my life choices. Come to think of it, the best dialogue I’ve ever written came to me when I was in the shower, or while taking a bath, or when chopping vegetables for dinner. Maybe bathrooms have some a special aura, or knifes inspire me—I don’t know. But I never force a chapter if it, as you’ve put it, refuses to be written, because you can tell when authors do that.

It always goes much better when I wait till text is practically bubbling under my skin. ‘Hunting Hearts’, my other work on ao3, got written in like 3 weeks, cause I simply couldn’t stop and breathed out over 90k words like it was nothing. In ‘Tides’, the easiest chapters to put together recently have been: Marks and Markings, Snowflame, The Lessons of History🖋

"Get your ass over here and give me a kiss" with Jack! [dokiquents]

Prompt: “Get your ass over here and give me a kiss.”

As the business with Zarpadon died down, the need for a bodyguard become less… obvious. Somehow it was becoming harder and harder for Jack to justify keeping his little Vault Hunter around.

There was something to him - something about him - that made Jack want to keep him close. He was… treasured.

In the entire endeavour, Ryder had stood by him. Whether it was fighting off pirates upon Hyperion or protecting him from scavs upon Elpis, there didn’t seem to be anything that could drive him away.

Except, perhaps, this.

“Sir?” His new assistant brought him back to reality, where said Vault Hunter stood, awkwardly scratching his wrist. He always did that.

“Yes, thank you.” Jack gestured for them to leave and they hurried off, leaving the pair alone. An uncomfortable silence fell as the CEO hummed to himself, deep in a train of thought as he leant on his hands, staring into the void outside his window.

“Is it over?” Ryder spoke up, pulling him away once more, and he noted the blush rising on his hunter’s cheeks, “The contract, I-I mean.”

His hunter. His little Vault Hunter.

Perhaps there was a reason to keep him around - if only for his skills, of course. Hyperion could use a Vault Hunter in its back pocket and, with his new position as CEO, Jack was sure to need protection still. What if Zarpadon had more unknown allies?

It was best to keep him close, safe. Somewhere near by - perhaps…

“You like me, don’t you, Vault Hunter?” Jack drawls out, a smirk rolling onto his face as he leans forward to face the younger man, “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.”

“W-well, you’re my friend,” He mumbled back, cheeks as red as some scav’s blood, before making eye contact, “At least, I hope so.”

“Just a friend?” Jack whined, “And here I was, thinking I had a chance after all those times you rescued me!”

Sputtering at the comment, the Vault Hunter’s blush deepened and he gasped for a minute, only stopping when the CEO spoke again.

“Well, there’s only two ways for this to go, my Little Hunter. One, you get paid and leave - easily the most boring option. Or two, you get your ass over here and give me a kiss.” He chuckled at the shock on his hunter’s face.

Patience drawing thin, Ryder stormed around the desk, eagerly grabbing Jack’s cheeks, and pulling him into a passionate kiss. Responding immediately, the brunette pulled his Hunter down onto his lap, deepening the kiss.

When they parted for air, heads resting against each others, Jack began laughing, a wide smile covering his blush.

“Now that wasn’t quite what I expected - but definitely needed.” Ryder rolled his eyes at the comment and pulled the other closer again.

“You talk too much.”
