gsps really are the most Dog of all dog breeds

I’m honestly surprised there are not more shorthairs on dogblr. What’s the hold up people. They are basically just a Malinois minus the teeth and brains and there are like 50 of those bopping around on this site! That and gsps are truly a dime a dozen. I could go on Craigslist right now and find a few byb litters. (I won’t. But I could.)

In all seriousness I think it has to do with the fact that the people who enjoy them unfortunately tend to lean conservative 😓 especially once you get into the hunting community. Being obviously gay or trans in hunting spaces is not super comfortable or safe feeling and I can only imagine being non-white in these spaces as well. That and the popular training methods used for gun dogs are… interesting. To say the least.

Some snippets of the books I was given when I was trying to get into hunting :

That isn’t to say that these are completely void of any useful information, there are lot of simple training steps that make perfect sense for the task the dogs are doing. But I think you have to take some of this with a grain of salt; when I was trying to get into hunting I found that I was able to achieve the same results with less adverse methods, plus my mentor was much more versed in modern dog training and conditioning. Brandy’s training is more of a blend of the two- the most adverse tools we used was a woah- harness (phased out pretty quickly) and an e-collar for long distance recall (again, there is a bit of a trade off of comfort for safety- the dogs job in the field necessitates being off leash and pushing out far ahead of the handler, and they can quickly get out of sight or earshot. Having a Vibrate-based recall cue simply makes sense. This should be paired with a gps collar just in case… I was told many a horror story of dogs falling into mine shafts and only being found because of the gps Tag).

Force fetching was never on the table. I saw one handler with a rubber bumper covered in toothpicks so his dog would not bite down too hard on it… never had to do that either. I’ve never had to strap an e-collar to my dogs belly. I don’t have to force my dog into a down to teach her. I don’t step on her toes (on purpose).

Her WOAH command maybe took longer than I would have liked, but it’s solid with lots of practice. Her recall is great and regularly practiced, and I don’t need an e-collar to reinforce it. She has a wonderful natural fetch, though we never formalized it. She’s beautiful when she’s on point, and it’s amazing to just see her do exactly what she was meant to do with little input from me. Truly no greater feeling than watching her cross back and forth across a field in front of me and freeze into a perfect point. It’s like she wants to chase the bird/rabbit/whatever SO BAD she’s shaking but her genetics won’t let her.

If I had the money to get back into hunting and falconry I would do it in a heartbeat. It’s a hobby that’s been sidelined since losing my job for obvious reasons, and it’s the first thing I want to pick up when I have a more stable income. If and when that will happen, I am unsure

Dogs of all time for sure. But very much a dog that is good at the one thing they are good at, and if you DON’T do that thing, they can be…. A bit much. Being so environmentally focused can be difficult for people I think. It’s just not what many people are looking for (even though they give world class cuddles). That and the energy level; I don’t think it’s too bad, especially now that they are older (we go out for runs like 2-3 times a week) but also I simply would not leave the house if there were no consequences, so having a creature that will dismantle my furniture if I do not go get some vitamin D is a great motivator. The dichotomy of being a Velcro dog and being nearly oblivious to their handler when they are off leash is interesting, and probably why you don’t really see them in many sporting dog circles, or working outside of hunting. You gotta cement that recall before you let them off leash, ESPECIALLY being able to recall off of wildlife, and you gotta work really hard to reinforce handler engagement. I joke that Brandy is an idiot, but everything she needs to be able to do seems to be hardwired into her, and the things I had to teach her (recall, leave it, drop it, WOAH ect) she picked up quickly and hardly ever has issues with. (Dont talk to me about loose leash walking though)

Regardless, I love their personalities, their niche behaviors, their energy level, their ability to be the goofiest silliest idiots, their soft soft floppy ears, I love how they talk back to me when I talk to them, I love their big booming barks and club feet. I love that we are ultimately exploring the world together, and the joy we share when running through the woods or on the beach. I love watching them leap into the river with reckless abandon. And then at the end of the day, all they want to do is get under the covers with me and fall asleep. They are perfect monsters and I can’t see myself without them.

Gundam Wing: Minutia and Trivia

On my long and winding way down research rabbit holes, I often stumble on bits and pieces of trivia that I find quite interesting, but don't really fit anywhere in my usual commentary on Gundam canon and are far too niche and inconsequential to merit a post of their own. HOWEVER. Since I know in my heart that you, dear reader, are also the sort of person for whom background details of the absolute least consequential variety are a source of delight and inspiration, I am compiling some of my discoveries here, and perhaps if I find more, there will be follow up posts. This one happens to be, in a very loose sense, mostly about Romefeller, OZ, and its Special Eyebrow People, because that is where my brain worms are currently converging. Here is my collection of useless trivia. I lay them at your feet like weird pebbles. Look at them. They're neat.

1. The Daily Kingdom Newspaper

It's quite likely that this has already been done, but in the grand spirit of this blog, I have decided to take the path of highest effort for the stupidest reason, and transcribed this paper. This page of After Colony news, ostensibly from July 14th, A.C. 195, appears to be reporting on events that happened towards the end of World War II. It's apparently been a slow news day for the Sanc Kingdom press for several centuries. I found myself getting kind of wrapped up in the stories and was disappointed I couldn't turn the page and find out what happened next. (I mean, I know what happened next, broadly speaking.) Of particular interest were Henri and Camille Dreyfus, Swiss chemists who made a lot of innovations during both world wars. ...They were also apparently noted OZ supporters? Well, what can you expect from a big industrial supplier of*checks notes* acetyl intermediates.

2. The OZ doggy

This spotty and behaved hound is a real breed of hunting dog, the German Short-haired Pointer, or GSP! Did you know this, dear reader? I did not know this. This is new Dog Lore to me.

from the wiki: "It is a pointer and retriever, an upland bird dog, and water dog. The GSP can be used for hunting larger and more dangerous game. It is an excellent swimmer but also works well in rough terrain. It is tenacious, tireless, hardy, and reliable. German Shorthaired Pointers are proficient with many different types of game and sport, including trailing, retrieving, and pointing pheasant, quail, grouse, waterfowl, raccoons, opossum, and even deer."

Seems like a perfect bird-hunting companion for Mr. Treize. She'll probably go retrieve the beautiful red phoenix he murdered. I've decided she's named Oscar (after the Rose of Versailles) and she is a very good girl. Braver Oscar! Braver Hund!

3. Luxembourg Castle

This is Treize's abandoned Disney castle in Luxembourg. I owe the background artists of this scene an apology, for in my heart I assumed this was a random assemblage of spare castle-parts they found at Ludwig II's rummage sale. Reader, I was wrong:

THIS is Schloss Viandin, a restored castle in Luxembourg. Look at this place, it's gorgeous! You can hardly tell there's a secret mobile suit bunker in the basement. Frankly, I'm jealous I'm not being confined there, Treize! Stop sulking in the catacombs and go relax in the pretty princess bed until you feel better. Gaze upon the signed picture of Patrick Swayze; let him inspire you.

4. Romefeller's Secret

This one comes to us from the Battlefield of Pacifists manga, which, I've learned, is pretty good actually. (I mean it's not GOOD good, but it contains some interesting stuff). Now, come: I am taking you with me on this journey:

I feel extremely vindicated knowing that there's semi-canonical support for my theory that the Romefeller aristobrats are Austrian. I knew it. I KNEW IT. According to this manga, Romefeller was officially founded in Vienna-- the wording is a little ambiguous in this translation, but if Romefeller had members joining it in 1862, then it had to have existed in some form since then-- which means that the "Glorious Year" of 1956 is something other than its founding date. So what exactly happened in 1956? As I am a hack and fraud, and have been one all my life, I have looked to wikipedia for guidance. Mostly what was happening was the Cold War, colonialism, uprisings, Elvis, research and debate over artificial intelligence, both the hard drive disk and the snooze-button alarm clock being invented, Japan joining the UN, and wait what's this--

COMPUTER, ENHANCE:

...My god...

It's all coming together.

The evidence is all here. There is simply no other conclusion we can come to.

--For this, and many other reasons that are well beyond the scope of a fandom blog, you should probably boycott them.

5. The Romefeller Coat of Arms

I'm no vexillologist, and my heraldic experience is limited to adoptable pixel dragons, but what I am is an insane person with too much time on their hands. And so, to the best of my ability, I have blazoned the Romefeller coat of arms:

Supporters: Two Unicorns Rampant 

Crown: Purpur Crown of Peerage or Lord of Parliament  

Escutcheon: Heater with Two Engrailed Wedge Top - party per pale (halved vertically)

Blazon: Sinister (Right): Argent, Bend Sinister Sanguine; Dexter (Left): Bleu Celeste, Charged with a Ringed (or Celtic) Cross Argent 

Motto Scroll: UPRTUN or UPRTVN

--I don't know what UPRTVN is meant to stand for, but there are truly SO many ways you could play Latin Mad Libs and get a reasonable-sounding answer. At a stab, knowing Romefeller's priorities and values, I would guess it probably contains a, you know, "Unity/Peace/Rule/Tradition/Victory/Necessity", "Unity Through The Rule of Tradition Is Our Victory", or some such deeply worrying thing. Take your pick really.

6. "Herbst" / "Autumn"

The Rilke poem Treize quotes in "Frozen Teardrop" is not terribly difficult to find online, but if you're not sure what you're looking for it can be difficult because he has multiple poems about Autumn, and Autumn Day is perhaps better known; also the internet is absolutely filthy riddled with despicable bots and farmed content that has lost its attributions, so you do have to dig to find where different translations have come from (bless this very Web 1.0 page for carrying on the lord's work in basic html). Here is the original in German, and two complimenting translations:

Herbst -Rainer Maria Rilke Die Blätter fallen, fallen wie von weit als welkten in den Himmeln ferne Gärten; sie fallen mit verneinender Gebärde. Und in den Nächten fällt die schwere Erde aus allen Sternen in die Einsamkeit. Wir alle fallen. Diese Hand da fällt. Und sieh dir andre an: es ist in allen. This translation by Horst A. Scholz (linked here so I don't get into trouble) is the most spare and one-to-one translation into English I've found-- I always appreciate having a comparison between the very literal meanings and a more creative reconstruction when I'm reading translated poetry.

Meanwhile on the other end of the spectrum, this translation by Robert Bly is very freeform and agnostic; for my own purposes, I think the use of "Space" instead of "Heaven" happens to fit nicely with the themes of Gundam:

Autumn -translation by Robert Bly The leaves are falling, falling as if from far up, as if orchards were dying high in space. Each leaf falls as if it were motioning "no." This is mainly for fun but it’s actually some great charecter study to see what you associate and understand with the character. For this I’ve tried to stick with mainly hunting/working dogs as that’d suit them better than the more mainstream 3-4 choices.

Pony- Treewalker coonhound

I initially sort of saw him as a beagle but I think this is more fitting, still with some of that cutesy look. Wants to be taken seriously, works well, little baby.

Soda- Field golden retriever

Do I need to explain this one?

Darry- Redbone coonhound

Wanted to keep them in the same sort of dog family, well…soda is special. Good sense of smell, this is my trying to relate it to him finding his brothers/protective.

Looks like the dog can have a good laugh lol if we want to more Americanize border collie would also work.

Spooktober day 18 full moon/werewolves

A story for @tyronedatiger event Spooktober day 18 full moon/werewolves.

Sarah call her best friend Lisa and said to her, "Hey Lisa, thanks for the tracker you give me. I put it in Max's jeans as you said when he is about to leave just like he did one night every month." and Lisa on the other side of the phone said to Sarah, "Well, it is obvious that Max has been cheating on you." Sarah said, "I don't know if I would accepted that Max has been cheating on me over the course of our six years of marriage. He could just like doing a night hunting, and don't want to tell me about it in case he get in trouble with the law. Anyway, I need to know how the tracker works."

As the sun begins to set, Sarah drive her car to car to Max's location using her GSP and she ask herself when the GSP tell her to take a left, "Why is Max going deep in the woods? Is he night hunting as I guess?" Soon, Sarah arrived at a cleaning and see her bearded husband Max on the ground in pain and the shocked Sarah quickly got out of her car and she call out, "Max?!? Max, are you okay?!?" Max turn to see his wife and he warned Sarah, "No.... get away from him.... my wolf.... will eat you...." and Sarah watch in horror as her loving husband become a black fur wolf monster that stand on two legs under the full moon and let out a howl. The now wolf Max turn its eyes at Sarah and growl at her, which scared Sarah and she start telling her changed husband, "Max... it's me... Sarah.... your wife.... please.... remember me....." The werewolf walk up to Sarah and smell her, smelling his scent on her which means this woman is his mate, but the werewolf is curious about why his mate is not showing her inner wolf like he is and, while unable to speak, he hold out a claw and Sarah quickly understand what her werewolf husband wanted, "You.... you want to transform.... into what you are...." The werewolf Max nod and Sarah said to her husband as she show her shoulder to Max, "Can you give me a small bite?" which the werewolf did as his mate request and give a bite on Sarah's shoulder. As Max lick the wound he left her, Sarah begins her transformation as her body grew in height as Max's werewolf form and blond fur grow on her body, becoming a werewolf.

Welcome to Dungeons & Funkin’

I know this is a lot of information to talk about so bare with me. I will he explaining the story and possible make a separate blog based solely on this AU.

Story:

This is a campaign based au from the ttrpg Dungeons and Dragons close with the canon story of Friday Night Funkin’. The main party is a party of three, with some who come and go:

-Boyfriend: Known in the story named Bardfriend or bard for short, is the hero and main character you see in the story. He is a level 10 human bard with many skills and training under his belt. He had a rough past but eventually had become the talk of the island NewFunk, after Daddy Dearest at his own game.

-Girlfriend: Known as Sorceress or Sorce for short, is the love interest in the story, secretly had been dating Bard for a short while before Dearest found out, only for her love for him grow stronger. She is a level 9 Tiefling sorceress under the dragon ancestry, where her father, Dearest, is a devil/demon, and her mother, Mearest, is a red dragon under a humanoid disguise. She is taken by one of Dearest’s henchmen before being rescued by a long journey to save her by Bard.

-Pico: known as GunSlinger Pico or GSPico (GSP), is the rival in the story. He is a level 10 human fighter(gunslinger) with a very difficult past. Bard and GSP are exs, but due to a seen misunderstood betrayal by bard, GSP has a grudge against him as well as the dearest family. But eventually, he tags along with Bard and provides the muscle of the group.

-Daddy Dearest: known as Dearest or Demon Dearest, is the big bad/ antagonist of the story and father of Sorce. He is a full devil/demon Tiefling with the highest status of NewFunk. He had been on the hunt of trying to kill Bard in any means possible but had been unsuccessful. But when taking matters for himself, he lost and humiliated by a large crowd by Bard. Only for his rage to take over and do something dramatic and deadly once making a deal with a mysterious figure, becoming the King of Demons.

The story is still in a work in progress but there is a lot of things about this au including the Time Trio, which is Story for another time.

Isn't it like, past midnight for you right now? Go to bed!!!

Anyway, German Shorthaired Pointers are really cool dogs! They're a pointing breed (hence "pointers") so as hunting dogs go they're fairly stable. Their job is to seek out prey (quail mostly) and point it out to the hunter. They do not flush the quail like a Beagle or a Coonhound might flush out a rabbit. They just find and alert the hunter to where the quarry is. Super cool work. Lots of fun to watch.

That being said GSPs are pretty stable for being a hunting breed. They're super energetic, friendly, and just happy dogs. But they're a doing breed. If they don't have something to do they either find something to do (chewing walls, furniture, etc) or they become nervous wrecks. I've never met one that didn't end up being found perched on top of the fridge at some point in their lives.

Not intending to call you out or anything but you remind me of that. You're fun, you have the energy of fifty hamsters (seriously how!? I'm so exhausted all of the time) and you are the picture of happiness and joy in the small things of life. But I see the little moments when you don't have something to focus on and your energy shifts. You get ansty and a little nervy. You need somewhere to put your energy. You need to be doing. That's not a bad thing of course. It's just you. It's a by product of all that boundless energy and joy you have bubbling up in you.

So yeah, you remind me of a GSP. They're my second choice for pointing breed. Super cool dogs. My favorite color are the liver roan.
