been fascinated with Finding Frankie today and while I definitely think there's a lot to praise about the game and the story and the characters,, i'm also hella confused as to WHY (not what) things in the story were happening...

not saying it needs like HELLA lore like Poppy Playtime or an ARG like Amanda the Adventurer or smth but even if u think about the story of the game as completely self-contained (as in, it has no effect on the universe it resides within),, some of the things that happen happen for no reason other than they were written that way??? which, again,, isn't a bad thing,, but i'd def like to see some of the plot threads introduced in the game developed more if they do end up making sequels...

things like,, why are there two frankies??? why is one evil (capitalism) and the other one just tries to stomp on you?? why are the mascots sentient or whatever??? were they built like that??? do they have human something inside them (human organs, human soul, etc.) or are they just inanimate objects that have their own consciousnesses of some kind????

who started the game show? who's running it? who created the mascots? who are the people watching the streams? does the government know or is this like squid games? how have they not gone bankrupt previously? how have the police not been notified BEFORE of hundreds of people dying before you arrive?

what is the player's motivation for being a contestant? it seems like your character tried really hard to get that vhs tape... why does frankie get mad at you for "ruining his fucking gameshow" and then turn around when you somehow survive falling into the incinerator (which,, what??? did you use the grindrails?? is that even the player???) and be like "omg let's be business partners buddy"???

how parkour physics work?? (i can suspend my disbelief on this one the most, honestly),, HOW IS THIS FACILITY RUNNING??? IS FRANKIE RUNNING THE WHOLE THING??? are there humans behind the whole operation that you're not seeing?? who called the polices???? why do they never bring that up again??? WHAT IS A NOOB NOOB?!?!??!1 why do they explode why do they do a little dance when ur chasing them why do they have blood inside them i'm assuming its blood cus all the supposed blood in this game is black is it dried?? is it old blood??? is it stylized?? is it ichor of some kind??? what??

translated ARG texts and my interpretations of what it means. I havent seen anyone go in thorough detail on what each line could mean, nor have I seen anyone translate these pages accurately. help on this is appreciated

ARG 1

When the moon is seen in the hour without light,

(its nighttime and the moon is up. self explanatory)

It can show newly weak souls a new world for God/newly weak souls can show God the new world, which was nothing and now is everything.

(newly weak souls may refer to animals or youth. The moon + night is a contributing factor in helping the souls show a new world for their god. Deum is a hymn praising god)

He saw the flesh of all the necessities of life and the wine of the living, for the custom returns to darkness before eternity.

(flesh of all necessities of life might be a description for humans. Wine of the living either relates to the phrase “wine of life”, a metaphor for someones passion of life, or how wine typically does not expire if contained safely, away from sunlight. Wine is also associated with the blood of christ, who was resurrected after once being killed)

This maple skin with soul-filled eyes can see a vessel in us, and when we perish to shine in the lightless sky, we embody the path to (at least) everything in this realm called Earth.

(maple skin may be tree bark, soul-filled eyes are the eye patterns on top of the skin, seeing potential in humans. Humans incarnate, aka represent, the path to everything)

At first it was of/in the ugly text/tissue/cloth, because my body contains the essence of greed. Over time, the text became aware.

(textum translates to text, but is most likely fabric/cloth, or tissue, as muscle and nervous tissue exists in the body. Beyond this is the body's essence of greed. This is probably talking about a flaw determined by the type of clothing or persons body, and the awareness from the bearer of said flaw)

He was almost succumbing/I was about to succumb to his ruthless lies, his greed can be seen on his cheeks/jaw.

(I instead of He is more likely here, unless the point of view is being changed or confused, because the mention of greed on a persons body is mentioned through whoever He is)

A silent night with the roofs of darkness in the village/town, for I speak of something that is more than everything.

(whatever they speak of seems only relevant to talk about at night when everyone’s asleep)

But soon it will be close, everything will become nothing and everything will be no one.

(they know the impending threat of everything becoming nothing. life will end)

I didn't believe it, I thought it was another lie... But then he showed me... I saw everything we had lived through, and then I saw the evil that awaited me... Then I returned.

(for whatever reason, the person or entity they talk to has lied to them and they have caught on. The author is being shown visions beyond their comprehension, including lived events followed by a grim end for them, and is suddenly brought back to reality. We have seen an example of this in Kevin’s Dream Job)

My body was paralyzed, my mind weakened and my life became short, because I saw the eternal incube of this creature's pain.

(they are distraught and made more aware of their fragility and mortality, now that they can emphasize with the creature and its pain, seeing an eternal nightmare. The usage of the word “incube” in some translations refer to seeing the closed off surroundings, or encasing, of its pain)

I made a pact/agreement: "Make me eternal, for I will forbid everything so that everyone is yours."

He accepted.

(a pact was made for the purpose of making the author eternal, so the creature, or Him, can have a source of power or control over everything)

ARG 2

I lost the feeling of living between points. At night they become torture, because I sleep in fear, waiting for a puncturing horror in the light surrounding the sky.

(living in between may refer to making the most of our time from two points, birth to death. Losing that feeling means there is either no more life or death, therefore “they” is likely referring to a different experience or entity)

Sometimes I shave my head and let the light consume my essence.

(this guy is insane)

But I have learned how the soul can survive the passage of time and, perhaps, live again without fearing the end.

(though they have learned to cheat death, the pages on this part of the book are covered in blood, either of or not their own. Their mental sanity must be declining)

Yesterday I walked to the forest to warm my house in the cold of the night. The village, or what was left of it, stopped going there.

(to warm your house, you would need to chop wood to make a fireplace. at some point, the village used to go to the forest to do the same. They may have stopped because of the tree entity)

He walked through the dark forest and I felt his eyes on my back, I looked desperately around me, seeing nothing but the seed of the earth. I kept walking until I saw a tree, one of which was cruel to me…

(He should most likely be I here. Also unknown if He and the tree are the same entity, although they still talk of the author’s struggles)

He asked:

"What an unfortunate soul, runs with a false goal/end.”

(more context is needed on what the false end is, but the tree takes pity on the author and tries to bargain with them)

He accompanied her to me. Her eyes could pierce my flesh and be nourished by my soul; and the voice, oh horrible sound of dry stones cutting, asked before her.

(unclear who Her is, or if she’s a person at all)

"I can let the voice live, if it gives you a deal/trade.”

(the deal was most likely requiring a vessel in order to give the author eternal life, then they will provide six children in return, giving the author a stronger vessel to inhabit. Not sure who the voice is referring to, it could be the eyes/stars which speak to the author)

When I was terrified, I said no out of fear, I ran away, and understood the tree.

(unclear if they could tell that the tree had ulterior motives, or if they were simply unsure of the decision and intimidated by the tree’s powers. The voice might also be the tree)

He showed me how to hide my soul in a new vessel, but in return: He wanted six children, because their souls are stronger.

(either through force, contemplation, or a second attempt to reason with the being, the author agreed to the deal. A child's soul may be stronger due to their youth, and how time feels like it’s passing much slower when you're young)

Today, in the hour without light, I will try it with the vessel.

I searched for someone and it worked. He died like a caterpillar trying to evolve into a butterfly.

Unfortunately for them, the monster was hungry.

(metamorphosis is a transformation process. Inside the pupa, the body dissolves and breaks down, digesting itself and becoming nearly entirely made of goo. In the process of becoming a vessel, the victims body will become unrecognizable)

The meaning of the living comes/is coming, for this will be a vessel for all, but I will bring all my things at night, fear is the end of the bright darkness.

(the end goal might be to make a vessel for all of humanity to live forever)

Who are the major players in The Magnus Protocol?

The more we delve into the season, the more it, becomes apparent that alchemy is a big theme this season. If you haven't already, read more on my theory how The Magnus Protocol is about a race between alchemists if you want more context on what I will be talking about in the post.

It's all speculation, but cross referencing the Klaus sheet from the ARG, which is an excel sheet containing other incidents we don't know much about (it's also all in german, so that's fun), there seems to be three major "named" players in the sheet Lady M., Mr M. and Mr B.

They are only attributed few incidents, but combining historical data and few times location is mentioned we can speculate on their identity assuming they are all supposed to be famous alchemists.

I will also mention, the idea that alchemists gainied immortality and are living up to today is not new, Nicolas Flamel and John Dee are both told to have gained immortality and hiding among us today.

Lady M.

There isn't many female achemists throughout history (because if men play with chemicals it's called "alchemical pursuit" while if a woman does so it's suddenly "witchcraft" am I right?), but one of the most prominent ones is also one of the oldest ones out there: Mary the Prophetess.

She's basically the grandmother of all alchemy. Ancient, as even in the oldest sources of alchemy from the 4th century she's described as have been living in the past. Her being involved in an incident in London is not as weird considering that her home is probably long gone anyway. She's also only one where date of incident was mentioned and it's only few months before the events of the podcast begun.

Mr M.

Involved in an incident in Berlin he's to be assumed of German origin and crossreferencing famous alchemists I think I've got an absolutely perfect fit: Albertus Magnus.

Literally named "Doctor universalis" for being a German scholar knowledgable about and cataloguing basically everything. Many people think Magnus Institue is related to Jonah Magnus, but let's remember this universe is much more similar to ours. Maybe Magnus Institute and Magnus Protocol aren't about Jonah Magnus, but relate to Albertus Magnus instead. Category number in the incident is 2, which by my previous theory would mean it involved the matters of The Mind.

Mr B.

Based on Somerset and the fact this person deals with The Soul (1) and to less of a degree The Mind (2) I think the pick is pretty apparent: Roger Bacon

Named Doctor Mirabilis, "the wonderful teacher", born near Ilchester, Somerset, outside of being one the great English alchemists he's well known for two things - he has placed considerable emphasis on the study of nature through empiricism (and many experiments) and that he was involved in creation of the brazen head, a necromantic device that would answear questions, supposedly through an entraped human soul. Both of these align well and to me, him being born in Somerset basically confirms it.

It's worth mentioning, Mr B. was the only person mentioned to have created a project with a rank S, meaing he's probably in posession of the most powerful item in The Magnus Protocol universe.

The boy just about reached the top of her hip bone, the hair pushed back behind a shiny new headband he had undoubtedly just gotten. He blinked curiously at her, as if he was taking her reaction in, moment by moment, as if he was trying to savour it. Akami’s stomach turned a little, this weird sinking feeling that always announced the big hole in her soul when there was anything relating to her father.

“I’m Mitsuki”, the boy told Akami what she already knew. “You must be….Akami?” he was friendly enough to state it as a question, though he clearly already knew who she was. She wondered when his father had told him or whoever else came before him about her existence or if MItsuki just found her on her own. 

She stretched her shoulders a little. “I am Akami, yes,” she confirmed and almost added a honorific to that just to push the boy to be a little more respectful to her. She stopped herself though. He was not at fault for the complicated past she had with their creator.

“We have the same father,” Mitsuki stated and smiled a little. “That makes you like my older sister, right?”

Her stomach turned again. The big hole that had opened up was opening even wider, letting her stumble and fall through it like she was walking on a tightrope. Though she had had years since she had learned that her father was trying to clone himself in some underground lab or other, she somehow felt completely unequipped to deal with this: the real product of those experiments.

To say she had a troubled past with her own father was probably an understatement and not minding what he was doing was probably the healthiest choice she had made after the war. This kid in front of her was nothing but another branch that connected her to him, something she’d better not invite into her life. A lot of time and healing had gone on and Sasuke was better, Anko was better and Akami was better too.

But he was just a kid. When one thought about it logically, then one could think that clones are not separate, own humans, since their DNA wasn’t unique. But Akami didn’t believe that. This boy in front of her eyes wasn’t her father and if he grew up around people that cherished and loved him he’d also never become her father. DNA be damned.

Mitsuki wasn’t responsible for the sins of the person that created him, he had come up to her with his head held high and a smile, maybe searching for a family he didn’t know he had before. What people were there with him where he lived? Were there any? Sasuke had told her that Karin and Suigetsu had stuck around and that their kid was there too, but did that mean he was happy?

There was this part of her that wanted to take him away and keep him, raise him, just like she’d done with Sasuke, just to make sure he was going to turn out alright. But that hadn’t worked with Sasuke either and now she was much older and tired more easily. Shinobi business never meant a painless life growing into old age.

Mitsuki’s eyes watched her, waiting for a reply and it reminded her of one of her snakes. He was just a child. His child. But a child nonetheless.

The choice seemed impossible to make and yet it was surprisingly easy.

Akami put her hands onto her legs and leaned down to eye level the boy. “That's right,” she said, “I am your big sister.” She laughed a little and turned one strand of her hair that had greyed a little under her finger: “Though I am more like your aunt, when you consider my age.”

“Ahh,” the boy said, his eyes lit up so brightly that it took her aback, “Akami-nee. I’m so glad.” He definitely sounded like he meant it.

It was like light in his eyes and the smile on his face closed the open hole in her stomach. He was just a kid, his DNA didn’t define him. Why would it? It hadn’t defined her either.

“Did you just get promoted to Genin?” she asked in a friendly tone and tapped the headband that was still shiny and scratchless. 

She thought about hers, laying at the top of her sideboard in her apartment. She retained it from when she was very young, but it looked incredibly worn down. “You can have a new one,” she’d been told, last time she wore it. But she was older now and retired from shinobi business so for the very few official events that she wore it the old one did just fine.

“That’s right!” he said and tapped it too. “I was accepted as a Genin even though father is not highly regarded. It was lucky.”

“Congratulations.” Akami smiled at him. 

Her response brought something like pride in his eyes. “I wasn’t originally going to school, but father asked the hokage to accept me and then I was! I was suddenly around a lot of people, it was very interesting.”

Akami tried to picture her father, however he looked like now, walz right into the Hokage office and asking for his little experiment child to get an education. The image in front of her mind's eye almost made her laugh. “I know I tried to murder your best friend and take over his body, but can you still pay for my child’s education?”

“Lord Seventh is kind,” Akami replied. “Of course you were accepted.” Naruto would never hold his parentage over a kid like this. That just wasn’t the kind of person he was.

Mitsuki nodded. “I was happy also because my brother didn’t get this education, but I got the opportunity.”

She shook herself a little: “Brother?” How many of them were there? Was it another identical clone?

“Log,” Mitsuki reported. “He is about 18 years of age, I think. Supposed to be, I think.”

Akami did quick maths in her head. About Konohmarus age, she wondered to herself. That meant that either her father had experimented with clones already before the war (which might as well be possible), or that he had found a way to accelerate the ageing process. “Is there another?”, she asked next. “Brother of ours I mean…”

The boy shook his head: “Just Log and me and Akami-nee.”

Noted. “Well, that is two more siblings than I ever though I’d have. So thank you.” She ruffled the boy's hair. “And you guys are doing good?” She tried to keep the question casual, but couldn’t completely cloak the underlying worry. Mitsuki for his part didn’t look neglected and if he had a big brother around they could protect each other but still….

“I have nothing to complain about.” He said, which only half satisfied Akami.

“No experiments?” She asked.

He shrugged. “Nothing but the initial way we were born.” The way he phrased it sounded as if his birth was no different than any other birth, she wondered if he knew that his was absolutely not normal at all.

Putting both hands on his shoulders she directly looked at him: “Listen, Mitsuki, if anything - anything- ever comes up, you come straight to me. You pack your brother too if you want, but find me and I’ll take care of you.”

Mitsuki blinked so she grabbed his shoulders a little tighter to show that she meant it: “Promise me.”

He hesitated for a moment. Then he looked up. “Promise.”

Why do I like it so much?

This is actually my favorite book series! It was the third monster lover book I had picked up. Compared to the others, it dialed back on the “spice” and it focused heavily on the characters, their differences, the stories before each other, and both sides of the coin are developed in a very intricate way! You can tell the author has put her heart and soul into her works. For a good portion of the book, Arges and Mira couldn’t even speak to each other. Yet, even with the communication barrier.. All of their interactions were interesting! I’ve never finished a book so fast in my life.

Not only this, but the book itself is made beautifully. The author is against AI artwork (as far as I’m aware) and all of the artwork within her books are commissioned from other artists! From the covers, to the inner cover, and every chapter page has a sketch of the pairing involved with beautiful decor. Her books are pretty to look at and the stories are so interesting that it doesn’t take away from the focus!

I also really enjoyed the technology of the setting Mira came from. She is from an underwater city called “Beta” and there are other underwater cities we will and have seen in other books so far! The way the author describes each setting is utterly captivating. Not to mention, our protagonist is accompanied by a little robot programmed with its own emotions! It’s magnificently written and charming!

I also really like the detail of the species of merman themselves. The merfolk call themselves “People of Water” while the humans call them Undines. The merfolk also call humans “Achromos”. This was another detail I very much enjoyed!

This is was supposed to be a simple ask but it ended up getting long because of there being too many question and discussions but barely any answers so sorry about that.

On the topic of WhatPumpkin sometimes we all have to wonder what the fuck is going on behind the scenes, the latest news we got werent that much and it felt more of a like "Hey guys we are still alive dont forget about us" situation and it doesnt help that we cant really get any info because of how the only guy that Im atleast aware that works on it and is online is James and although I have no source because it was months ago, when beyond canon came back I remember him getting asked about Hiveswap and i dont remember if he answered it on the blog or on a reddit qna but he had said he cant really do much about it because hes just the music guy on that department and not an director or writer and he probably cannot say whats going on if hes aware of even the minimum because of NDAs and you know the situation is weird when not even the new director for post canon can do nothing about it or doesnt know what the fuck is going on over there either (i believe its more of the former).

On the same topic Hussie jumping the ship in my opinion feels like such an awful move in a moral and community sense, he hires fucked up people and ends up going through development hell and instead of trying to fix it he just runs away and gives someone else the work. He becasically invited destruction to that place by not doing background checks and shit and now everyone else but him has to suffer for it. I wonder if WhatPumpkin will close business after they finish Hiveswap (if they even manage to finish it) or if their writting quality wont be bad if they try to do Hauntswitch now.

I also sometimes wonder if Hauntswitch was made first maybe things could have been better. Think about it:

It happens on the Human World and you play as a cool kid looking troll and that could open the doors for a lot of potential to explore more about the Earth on the Homestuck universe and its conspiracy theories and also give us more video game parody mechanics.

The whole conspiracy theory Jude had that iirc had even the USA presidents connect to may be right considering the easter egg that shows some sort of cultists standing outside the mansion we see on the background and watching the events unfold.

We would get more answers for whatever the fuck those creatures that attacked the manor where.

Exploration of what SkaiaLabs exactly does.

Overall sounding like an awesome story itself, a alien coming to earth and fighting a cult related to the presidents with a human companion. Especially considering how Dammek sounds like hes an asshole and also because of how trolls are usually violent could lead to interesting interactions.

I might be wrong and biased though but I feel like that concept could attract more outsiders than Hiveswap could ever wish to do. And hopefully thats it and that I wont waste almost an hour of my life rambling about this stuff (for my own sake because i feel like i could have spent my time better but i also need to post this somewhere and i dont use social media most of the time and when i do its usually to see fanart, memes and overall discussion of my fav franchises) but I probably will in the future.

Yes, the question about Hiveswap was asked in a Q&A back in October 30th, 2023 from James Roach here (Archive ver for backup). The news about development should be something more like how Toby does with the Deltarune newsletter. Monthly, maybe do a special event ARG thing that gives insight of what's coming up, or anything like that. Though even with that, it might be probably too little too late since we are at 11 years since the Kickstarter had funded. Probably doesn't help since 2 million dollars was wasted, it's a mystery how the game is still being worked on if the original Kickstarter money that was given to them, had been used up. What is WhatPumpkin's new source of income then? Do they have a second job they aren't telling us about? Are they using part of that Patreon money from Beyond Canon since technically there are some that work within Hiveswap too like James? Then there's the fact Hussie not only wasted the money, but basically left the Kickstarter project he started in the first place. He may own it and be credited as the creator, but he won't be involved in the future Acts and Hauntswitch. I'm surprised nobody is pissed at him for scamming them out of 2 million dollars. Do people not care if the original person who hosted it left? Especially with the truth come to light thanks to Gio's research on this. I wouldn't be surprised if WhatPumpkin does shut down because they couldn't gain the sales needed after releasing Hiveswap Act 3. People will probably wonder if even buying stuff from Topatoco would help or not with HS merch like the prints slowly resurfacing. Drawing in the crowds from old and new to play the game will be tough. I wouldn't be surprised if Hauntswitch was first made in mind before Hiveswap. Dammek even had a 3D model ready too.

Likely back when it was still a 3D game, we would control briefly but then after the cutscene of them being transported to the other planet, we would then have to take control of Dammek, have him meet Jude to possibly have him find a way to help him back home, and the pair would adventure on Earth itself for the rest of the game to find out about the monsters and the cult. Dammek's paranoid nature would play off Jude's conspiracy theory pretty well as it has the two involved looking deep into the mystery. I wouldn't be surprised if something about the cult would eventually tie in to his home planet and the rebellion as a final grand twist. An idea like that sounds more interesting than some girl getting lost on an alien planet and was roped into some rebellion that she has no reason to be part of besides being concerned for a friend.

A thought I've been rolling around in my head is about Ultrakill's latest update and the arg before it. With the arg, long story short is that hell itself is an entity, and a cruel one at that. It locks doors, teleports beings, and utilizes the technology humanity brought down during their initial expeditions into hell to make the cyborg husks.

The end of P-2 brings a terminal that drops lore on the terminals. Since they're stuck in one spot and have been cut from contact outside of hell, it's said they've grown bored and as such begun trading with the machines that can move. Mobile machines record their fights for survival and the terminals grade it based on entertainment value and assign it points the robot can use to trade with the terminal for things like weaponry they teleport in.

Now the bit where my thinking comes in is such; the final line of the arg has hell taking over the message being sent and says "another dies. bring me more. I hunger." This means that hell can use modes of communication. Now what that "hunger" is could be several things, for entertainment, for souls, for bodies, feel free to hit me with others. Going with entertainment, there would be cause for hell to work alongside the terminals, keep their fancy machine toys fixed for whatever bouts of violence it desires while the terminals get their stimulation. However it's strange that hell needs the terminals working since it's known it can operate human technology just fine, so why let the terminals be? Could the potential of boredom be hell acting out and using terminals as an avenue? This guess is much more of a spitball as we do see machines like V2 showing more human emotions like vengeance during its rematch and the ability to be enraged.

Another curiosity is the terminals for the secret levels, reading messages that appear to be from god and them lamenting their creations and missteps. How could the terminals have gotten this information? If Hell fed it to them, how did hell get it? Why show this information, what end does it serve?

Hello!! Sorry for the late responseeeee. Thank you very much for being interested in them :D Also don’t apologize for presumably misinterpreting stuff it's not like we’ve explained him lol ToT It will be a bit of a really weird story to share though, so buckle up lol (Red uses any and all pronouns btw)

This is the capital weird part of our lore AKA programs which we already mentioned in our Pup explanation, but yeah for recap: when shadows interact with a video game that meets the requirements of 1) being kinda broken and 2) having a lot of care put into it (whether it’s how it was created or how the person that had it cherished it or whatever) as in the saying of “putting your soul into it” the shadow gets the idea or asset or whatever of a character or a concept within that game and becomes conscious, that good old trope of "The game becomes self-aware". Normally they get a body and that’s it, they incorporate to normal human society normally and also have mandatory therapy because you cannot come out normal from that ToT 

The exceptions to this are Pup and the now titular little guy!! Red. Red’s name comes from rival red from Pokemon! Red itself comes from a Pokemon copy, a really broken and busted down copy of the most broken Pokemon game everrrr Pokemon fire red: A really buggy and glitchy mess held by tape and raw will power, a start of a beloved franchise with tons of love put into it and also just busted. And That sort of brought Red into existence 5 years ago.

Red did not take over a character or an idea or a concept of a character, Red took over the literal glitches, every unused asset and every game breaking bug, this made it so that whenever he TRIED telling someone of its existence, it just read as glitching and nonsense and what you would think of when someone tells you “haunted game”, everyone with self-preservation is not going to entertain that and will just shut the thing off and sell it or something, programs are expected to emerge in a somewhat normal 4th wall break or something not screaming and static and the game shutting off on its own. He took the name red because among the scrapped nonsense there was also a scrapped trainer Red sprite in there and it was the only semblance of a face amongst that entire mess, and you take any face you can get when you don’t have any, and you take any semblance of an identity you can get when you also don’t have any.

So Red gained consciousness a hot second ago, 5 years ago from current timeline, but was not taken anywhere to become a real person because no one could tell she was one. A guy had his cartridge and just let it rot under his desk for those years because that thing is unplayable and also probably haunted!! Eventually he decided to sell it and you would not guess who got it (Owynn and Loon.)

Loon bought it because he’s just game obsessed, and at this point he was already dating Owynn so they were just hanging out and Loon wanted to play the thing. Haunted game screeching and screaming ensures and Loon was about to do the normal person reaction that is turning the thing off, but since Owynn is a weirdo he didn’t really care? Owynn is curious, not easy to scare at all, and he HARDCORE doesn’t believe in ghosts, so he was determined to fucking around with the thing trying to figure out if it what was wrong with it.

So a lot of Red’s inherent craziness towards Owynn and Loon comes down to the fact that they were the ones who actually got him out of that hell, Owynn fucked around and treated her as some sort of ARG like a loser and figured out what she was trying to say and what she was. Thisss is also badd and this is the moment where we tell everyone that they should never look up to Owynn OR Loon.

Basically, they figured it out! (Mostly Owynn) woho!!! Now they will take her to get a body and be normal right? (no). Owynn is a curious bastard and also inherently just morally skewed, and Loon is sort of a pushover and also an absolute dickhead to strangers and rlly low empathy (doesn’t seem people he’s not close with as real), so owynn just basically kept her in there?? for a few months??? They tried to frankenstein him a bit, tried to figure out what he was and how he worked and all that stuff. And it was obviously dehumanizing as hell and messed up how they were just playing mad scientist with his life, but also 5 years of being completely alone kind of warps your brain a little (a lot), and being seen as something “precious” or cool or interesting got her crazy attached to them 2. 

Eventually they talked and Loon got over his “if i don’t know you you aren’t real” thing because he DID know them now, and they EVENTUALLY after a literal hot second got Red to get an actual body. Took them long enough jesus. 

First of all, they had no idea how to even do this?? Because you need to fill out forms and that and Owynn couldn't on the basis of bad homelife, and Loon technically could but he was also incredibly out of it because he was taken to a part of town he didn’t even know at all and that just panicked him way worse. So problem number one is that, problem number 2 is that Red wasn’t even normal by program standards and was still just inherently glitchy. It all worked out surprisingly, Neither of them had the money nor the want to take care of Red or whatever, and in theory he should’ve ended up in the foster system but the woman who worked on his body saw that even with a body she is just inherently unstable and decided that she could take that responsibility given that she was an expert on the stuff.

So, Red has a really warped vision of those two because how do you not after that??? He sees them as sort of gods? which sounds crazy but then again how do you not after that. When Red is taken out of DS hell, two things are evident. 1) Her file was an English copy, so their “mother” language is English, most of the spanish he knows was acquired directly from hearing the real people out in the real world talk with each other over those 5 years, and even if that sounds like a long time to learn his cartridge was stuck and stored in a desk so what he could hear was limited and also muffled. So their Spanish is kinda bad, they tend to default to English but even then words are pronounced wrong because he never had the need to say most or any of them out-loud. 2) they have no animal. This is due to the scrapped Rival Red sprite having no animal traits. So he has to chose what type of animal person he will be, they knew they wanted to be an arthropod. Loon and Owynn are both arthropods, and she wanted to resemble her saviors, her gods. She chooses a cicada, a true bug! Actual bug! It’s a bit of a play on words on our part, since Red is an accumulation of all of Fire Reds bugs. Cicadas also represent rebirth, and new beginnings, and he was pretty much reborn into a new life by being taken out of DS hell. Another thing you may notice about their design is their eyes, one is a bar that you cannot see the end of, and her other small dot eye, this is also something he chose to have. Its the same eye disorder Owynn has! Xe also styles xir bangs like Owynn, wears stud earrings like Loon, and is in the insect subsection of arthropods with Loon. Generally tries to emulate them both. So, for the parts of themself that Red could choose in, he decided to look like the people he admires/worships.

Due to forming within an accumulation of glitches, and not a normal sprite like most programs, her physical form still glitches out. Things like chromatic aberration and actual spikes of distortion, which are all visual glitches but still hurt. This facet of how she exists is a lot of electricity, and messes with electronics, and with other programs, since their bodies, although made to be as realistic and human as possible, are still built things. machines and electronics, and therefore tamperable. Due to his glitchy nature, this means that he can bypass a lot of rules set inside of Programs that were made in fear of “machine uprising” nonsense.  Every program is able to re-enter electronics, they can go into the computer and chill there while their body is just sleeping/knocked out. They can do anything you normally can, but have a built in chip that prevents them from easily prating things, easily stealing people's information to make purchases, getting peoples ips, and in general messing with things for their benefit. These are all bypassable by Red due to her “inherently broken” nature. 

Speaking of being compatible with computers, programs have little items on them that their consciousness can retreat into if their physical body is too damaged, this item is sort of like a hard drive of their entire being? It holds them, and can be used to transfer their memories onto exterior hardware like a laptop, phone, or computer. Think of it as back ups to keep themself extra safe! Red is, again, glitchy, and have a terrible memory that gets erased and corrupted as they exist, and the longer they go without uploading their memory the more likely he is to have it become corrupted and forgotten. THey are reminded to upload it, and sometimes do, but even still the memory held within its own mind will corrupt eventually. They are left with watchable memories, thoughts and experiences that they don't remember doing or having. Undeniable proof (memory upload on exterior device) vs I Dont Remeber THat. 

Due to the fact that they clinged so hard to the image of the only useable face they had, and being baseline modeled after it, she has a bit of a thing with hats, since one of the key features of trainer red has always been having that iconic red cap and all of that it’s both a comfort and also something she hates. He doesn’t want to be trainer red or code or something that isn’t alive, but it’s also something that makes him feel less afraid and lost and stressed out because it's familiar, and she has very few things she can even classify as familiar at all. Which is why in some art she has it and in some she doesn’t. 

Xe also needs glasses given that xe willingly screwed his eyes up, but they tend to forget them a lot and having stuff on their face is just generally a foreign and weird feeling she hasn’t gotten used to, so she also may pop up with glasses or without glasses.

She has yet to really crack how to act like a normal person, has a hard time understanding social norms and the concept of lying in general. She’s blunt and sorta rude, she’s not used to moderating the volume of her voice so it tends to be either too loud or too quiet, and he’s horribly bad at lying and borderline cannot do it. They are very easily startled and scared, but she translates that fear into an immediate fight response, so they read as very easy to piss off and also very easy to hit things or hit people. 

Programs are sorta normal by now, and there’s other students who are programs, Red absolutely loathes all of them. It’s mostly just crazy strong jealousy at the people who claim to be “like him” to live so much better than him. Aside from the glitching, Red’s origin has made her have bad memory, be sort of physically numb to a lot of sensations aside from pain (can’t feel cold all that well, can’t feel light touches and stuff), and have an awful time with a lot of motor skills. And none of the other programs have to deal with any of that and it drives him crazy. Other programs also have memories from inside their world, since they are usually “character gains sentience” types, but Red has none of that, They are not a character, not even the MC, they are the glitches. Super jealous, sad, but overall mad. So he just messes with a lot of them, due to being glitchy when he touches other programs he makes THEM glitch and therefore hurt, and he tends to not get into a lot of trouble for it given that Owynn is vice president and plays devil's advocate. He tends to stick to just touching them to mess them up that way but he does have one guy he specially hates who he straight up gets into fist fights with, and it’s the guy who used to have his cartridge. Who is also a program!! how unfair!! he got to live those 5 years completely normal while Red was stuck! Xe wants to absolutely kill that guy.

Speaking of her body and the issues that come with it, They have a hard time doing a lot of stuff and are inherently clumsy due to not being used to any of this. They've had a body for about 6 months? So everything is still insanely overwhelming, scary and stressful; and such emotions of instability heighten her glitches which hurt and make her more stressed and it’s just a mad man’s cycle.

She also just has a really hard time even seeing her body at all, he has dysphoria because he’s nonbinary and her body was made to be male so they look masculine, they have a broad back and a square-ish face and a deep voice and it makes her feel gross. And he also has body dysmorphia, so he just looks fundamentally wrong and it cannot click in her head that the body in the reflection is actually hers at all, it doesn’t feel real in the slightest and it tends to make her derealization and her feelings of not being a real human worse.

They tend to have a really hard time feeling real, mostly when they’re alone because it just plops them right back into that crushing loneliness of being completely on her own for 5 years. When it’s on its own a way they ground themselves often tends to include biting, biting his fingers or a pen or chewing hard candy, likes the pressure in her teeth and likes exerting any force at all and it having a clear effect, this also means that her jaw tends to be super tense and that they grit their teeth a lot, also just bites her nails off and tends to pick off the loose skin around the nails with her teeth which just ends up in messed up fingers.

He has a fixation or proving his own realness, by experiencing as much as he can. Doing is living. Theyll try anything once except they will actually do it, unprompted, anything. Impulsive thought to eat something that by all means no one should consider eating? It's already in her mouth, sorry. Uh she learns about her cicada biology through Owynn (freak) and learns that she can process liquids a lot better than anything else. Soooo her best friend is the blender in her kitchen. They will blend up bread, insects, and meat. Think of that funny scene where Town explains his juices except 100 percent serious that is what she is drinking. It will also drink blood, in some hope that it will make it more of a living person. “how would drinking her own blood make him more of a person if he's having a hard time thinking of himself as one?” Who said it was their own blood? checkmate.

They are mostly not good at school, which makes sense given her background, but she’s freakishly good at math. This isn’t a robot thing, it’s not because she’s has a calculator built in or anything. It’s  because in those 5 years she spent completely alone there wasn’t really anything else to do other than thinking, because doing much else broke the game and therefore threatened to break them. But after a bit she just ran out of things to think about, and then she just started counting to entertain herself, counting up and down, making up operations and then solving them, and doing anything at all to keep himself (somewhat) sane. Numbers click into place and make sense, numbers tend to be constant and expected, a multiplication between two numbers no matter how big will never vary, counting is a way to keep herself entertained. Fun fact, Owynn also counts when he feels trapped, smiley. 

He outright despises the idea of trainer red, the literal character, because a part of his brain tells him that he’s not really a person, nor is he that beloved character, they are a scrapped version of it, a literal error that just happened to present itself with that well known face. And yet he clings to it, because if he doesn’t have that face and that name then he has nothing at all, and she has changed her body enough to resemble other people so it shouldn’t matter, and sometimes she wants to look like the character to feel as if he was a normal program at all. Just don’t bring up that character in front of her, lights a fire in her head.

Despite how Red may feel about their “game counterpart”, they don't harbor any resentment toward the overall Pokemon franchise. This is mostly because Loon really does like Pokemon, I mean, he was interested in the Fire Red cartridge for  a reason. Red has this mental system about how they feel about things, naturally you'd assume they hate Pokemon bc resentment for their source material, but since Loon is someone they consider above them, it “overrides” that. Her emotions toward people she would otherwise be indifferent to is easily and sharply shifted by the people she considers herself to be “on the side of”. extra thing we didnt know how to transition to: 

While Loon is unable to see strangers as real living people, Red has a tendency to see strangers as just inherently more alive than her, more deserving of being called living beings and all of that, everyone who isn’t a program is an actual breathing person, while programs are a cruel mockery and none of them are alive, including her.

the indomitable @fortunatetragedy tagged me on this baby while i was away and boy howdy do i love talking about my projects.

diving headfirst into The Singularity Project (codename: T.E.S. CO) for this one, babes.

What’s the first part of your WIP that you created?

The Vibes. Last October I was being harassed by a brain worm (lol) that did not want to become concrete in any way, and the only way I could get it down was by writing "the vibes" of what I wanted. Those vibes included "hazy 60s lounge", "synth", "Panos Cosmatos' style for weird ass stuff", and "burnt orange".

If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?

What Have You Become by MNQN, but more 80s-fied. And because I feel like it, it's end credits song would be I Remember by Tristam but like... slightly more melancholic.

What are your favorite characters that you made? Why?

So far, it'll have to be Verne. Neither hero or villain, he's the protagonist's father, and while he isn't physically in the story (as far as I can tell) he inescapably haunts the narrative. By "saving the world" the only way he thought possible, he doomed his son to a life no one deserves. He's also a silly guy who thinks himself a god (derogatory) and is wanted for several crimes against humanity. Second fave is Mike, our deuteragonist. He's just a guy trying to make a living but his work crush has been acting super weird by knocking back 20+ cans of soda per shift and claiming he can "hear the Mall speaking to him".

What other pieces of media do you think your fanbase would share?

Tumblrinas (affectionate, gender neutral) would probably also be reblogging some horror webseries things (SCP, The Walten Files, The Backrooms, etc), as well as more classic horror such as Re-Animator, The Thing, and The Fly.

What has been your biggest struggle with your WIP?

.......Yes. When the story started to form I struggled with the idea of capturing it in a single medium. I am first and foremost a writer, obvs, but a lot of the story relied heavily on visual storytelling. I eventually decided to turn this into a "multi-media project", which means there's a huge chunk of writing, but there are also segments that can only be experienced through audio and visuals (and maybe some fun ARG-esque puzzles). Three POVs? Each POV has its own timeline and its own medium? Did I embark on a multi-month journey to learn Blender and video editing? Am I still trying to get the story down? The answer is yes. (Help me.)

Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!

Yes. Mike has an anthill because it's the only thing he can keep alive.

How do your characters travel/get around?

In the 1911 portion? Via ship. Ernest Shackleton's ship on its voyage to the Antarctic, to be exact. In the 1981 portion? Via bus. Mike's too broke to afford a car. In the 2021 portion? Via car. [Cy] is the man with the plan... and also the car to drive his crew around.

What part of your WIP are you working on right now?

Mike's journals, which covers the events of 1981 through 1983. This part is the bulk of the entire project, and the part that is mostly told through writing.

What aspects (tropes, maybe?) will you think draw your audience in?

So many morally gray characters. But also morally corrupt characters. And morally confused characters.

I hope you like your monsters goopy, and your effects practical.

Don't worry about the cult swearing they can save the soul of a poor young "confused" man.

TO COMPLETE IT. LMAO. Mostly I just want to be able to stand up and say "Hey, look what I made! I made it because I wanted to and all my hard work paid off!" But I guess it would also be neat to have some sort of cult following? Would love to see fanart of what people think some of the characters look like! I wanna see fic! Give me fan songs I can blast while I drive! I wanna see certain YouTubers react/try to "solve" it so that I can sit there shaking my head. You know. The usual.
