Reminder.
It is against Project policy to give humans access to or special knowledge of technologies beyond the current scope of advancement already achieved by humans, or what they may accomplish in the near future via their own efforts.
In spite of human advancements in social consciousness and structure made in the past few hundred years and notwithstanding many individual humans' accomplishments in mature and responsible behavior, human society as a whole is not yet socially mature enough to be expected to responsibly use and manage far-advanced technologies such as those that allow for timespace manipulation, matter/energy conversion, worldshaping, extra-dimensional transference, relocation of cosmic-scale objects, and sub-atomic manipulations of similar scientific sophistication.
Far too many humans and groups of humans still view every advancement through the lens of how it can be used to gain power, money, or social status. Many who seek scientific advancement for its own sake and are not interested in exploiting it for personal gain, in order to push the limits of what they could achieve on their own, still require funding from those who would seek to exploit it for the gain of specific individuals or groups while contributing to the detriment of others. Human society as a global entity is not even mature enough to responsibly manage the technological advancements of which they are already in possession. Priority must be given to helping humans learn to do so.
It is hoped that human society may endeavor to achieve sufficient social/societal maturity to be able to deal with far-advanced technologies in responsible, non-destructive ways, before such time as Humankind may manage to develop such technologies independently. In the meantime, no authorization has been given to 'help' humans towards these or any similarly far-advanced sciences.
In short, all Project Members are directed to maintain the already-established non-interference policy as regarding scientific advancement. This is merely a reminder of a cardinal reason for scientific non-interference, and a significant purpose behind efforts to help humans develop greater social maturity and responsibility as a global society.

the fact that the robots in ultrakill were programmed to appreciate music in some form drives me crazy. what else would their creators have tried to let them appreciate.
#[iz.txt]#sorry im just#this drives me crazy!!#especially wrt how in w359 the thing that gets the aliens to want to know humans is music#super technologically advanced beings confused by music. a thing so human. you know#but also i like to imagine that some of their creators wanted to let them know(?) or give them more humanity#wanting to program them with an appreciation for aesthetics in architecture comes to mind#cause i dont think the people making them (hands on not leading the project) are particularly thrilled at making a warmachine#the thought is appreciation for architecture/structures being programmed into them -> less general overall destruction#if theyre appreciating how something looks theyre not going to just explode it#i know they dont have that.#but i like to think someone who built them wanted to give them programming that made stuff worth saving to them#this i a very v-model centered tangent but i just. sighs

I'm so normal about this
Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1
The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.
So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.
So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.
Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.
And the probe is working again.
From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.
#totally not thinking of my son Voyager from F/GO#totally not prohecting feelings of irl space exploration to a fictional character#and totally not projecting feelings of “my proud son who went into space alone for the advancements if humanity” to a irl space probe#totally not crying cuz Voyager was implied to have died already in fgo which is why he can ve summoned so seeing irl proof that he's alive#is making me totally act normal#i am so normal about this#fgo#fgo voyager

"Two and a half years ago, when I was asked to help write the most authoritative report on climate change in the United States, I hesitated...
In the end, I said yes, but reluctantly. Frankly, I was sick of admonishing people about how bad things could get. Scientists have raised the alarm over and over again, and still the temperature rises. Extreme events like heat waves, floods and droughts are becoming more severe and frequent, exactly as we predicted they would. We were proved right. It didn’t seem to matter.
Our report, which was released on Tuesday, contains more dire warnings. There are plenty of new reasons for despair. Thanks to recent scientific advances, we can now link climate change to specific extreme weather disasters, and we have a better understanding of how the feedback loops in the climate system can make warming even worse. We can also now more confidently forecast catastrophic outcomes if global emissions continue on their current trajectory.
But to me, the most surprising new finding in the Fifth National Climate Assessment is this: There has been genuine progress, too.
I’m used to mind-boggling numbers, and there are many of them in this report. Human beings have put about 1.6 trillion tons of carbon in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution — more than the weight of every living thing on Earth combined. But as we wrote the report, I learned other, even more mind-boggling numbers. In the last decade, the cost of wind energy has declined by 70 percent and solar has declined 90 percent. Renewables now make up 80 percent of new electricity generation capacity. Our country’s greenhouse gas emissions are falling, even as our G.D.P. and population grow.
In the report, we were tasked with projecting future climate change. We showed what the United States would look like if the world warms by 2 degrees Celsius. It wasn’t a pretty picture: more heat waves, more uncomfortably hot nights, more downpours, more droughts. If greenhouse emissions continue to rise, we could reach that point in the next couple of decades. If they fall a little, maybe we can stave it off until the middle of the century. But our findings also offered a glimmer of hope: If emissions fall dramatically, as the report suggested they could, we may never reach 2 degrees Celsius at all.
For the first time in my career, I felt something strange: optimism.
And that simple realization was enough to convince me that releasing yet another climate report was worthwhile.
Something has changed in the United States, and not just the climate. State, local and tribal governments all around the country have begun to take action. Some politicians now actually campaign on climate change, instead of ignoring or lying about it. Congress passed federal climate legislation — something I’d long regarded as impossible — in 2022 as we turned in the first draft.
[Note: She's talking about the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Act, which despite the names were the two biggest climate packages passed in US history. And their passage in mid 2022 was a big turning point: that's when, for the first time in decades, a lot of scientists started looking at the numbers - esp the ones that would come from the IRA's funding - and said "Wait, holy shit, we have an actual chance."]
And while the report stresses the urgency of limiting warming to prevent terrible risks, it has a new message, too: We can do this. We now know how to make the dramatic emissions cuts we’d need to limit warming, and it’s very possible to do this in a way that’s sustainable, healthy and fair.
The conversation has moved on, and the role of scientists has changed. We’re not just warning of danger anymore. We’re showing the way to safety.
I was wrong about those previous reports: They did matter, after all. While climate scientists were warning the world of disaster, a small army of scientists, engineers, policymakers and others were getting to work. These first responders have helped move us toward our climate goals. Our warnings did their job.
To limit global warming, we need many more people to get on board... We need to reach those who haven’t yet been moved by our warnings. I’m not talking about the fossil fuel industry here; nor do I particularly care about winning over the small but noisy group of committed climate deniers. But I believe we can reach the many people whose eyes glaze over when they hear yet another dire warning or see another report like the one we just published.
The reason is that now, we have a better story to tell. The evidence is clear: Responding to climate change will not only create a better world for our children and grandchildren, but it will also make the world better for us right now.
Eliminating the sources of greenhouse gas emissions will make our air and water cleaner, our economy stronger and our quality of life better. It could save hundreds of thousands or even millions of lives across the country through air quality benefits alone. Using land more wisely can both limit climate change and protect biodiversity. Climate change most strongly affects communities that get a raw deal in our society: people with low incomes, people of color, children and the elderly. And climate action can be an opportunity to redress legacies of racism, neglect and injustice.
I could still tell you scary stories about a future ravaged by climate change, and they’d be true, at least on the trajectory we’re currently on. But it’s also true that we have a once-in-human-history chance not only to prevent the worst effects but also to make the world better right now. It would be a shame to squander this opportunity. So I don’t just want to talk about the problems anymore. I want to talk about the solutions. Consider this your last warning from me."
-via New York Times. Opinion essay by leading climate scientist Kate Marvel. November 18, 2023.

Yee! And since you've been spearheading Terra for quite a bit (Same on my end), why not tell me a little story about how you would interpret him?
oh!!!! well. honestly. let you in on a little secret, reason why I keep drawing him is cuz I just. like drawing his design a totally normal healthy amount
but!!! I do have some hcs for him yes uhhh
since activation he has been a loyal bot. his first priority is Always following sunstar’s orders, he is unflinchingly devoted it’s almost concerning??
the reason he gets like this is during a particularly brutal battle, he is damaged badly and loses his left (our right) arm. he calls out for help but none of his fellow stardroids seem to hear him (they’re too far away and engaged in their own battles). he prepares himself to die and just as he’s about to be struck down sunstar saves him!!! he was loyal before then but it became worse after this event 😭
this is also how he gets his other arm, it was initially meant to be a replacement but he grew attached to it (also I headcanon that it can extend and stretch out and it’s length can vary)
aside from all that, he has some stuck up selfish qualities (duh) and views all the other starbots as slightly lesser than him, sunstar is the only one who he views as above him
his hair wasn’t always long! the only organic-like part of his body is his hair, it can grow and he has to maintain it constantly
unlike sunstar, he doesn’t eventually view what he’s doing as wrong, he truly believes that everything he does is correct and takes full pride in all of his actions, no matter how questionable (sunstar regretting some of his actions is what causes terra to eventually change although he’s reluctant to
I’d say the other droid he’s closest with is pluto! bonding over hair/fur care and all that. terra tries to maintain a decent relationship with all of the stardroids though
#SORRY I went on like.#unhinged ramble#honestly I don’t have much hcs for him?#they’re just kinda all over the place#and some of them have been like. Said by others before 😭#also if you’re wondering Why I chose any of these traits for terra I based them off of npd and bpd#I have bpd so yeah some projecting#I DONT KNOW IT JJST. FITS TO ME#sorry im a sucker for robots suffering in similar ways humans do despite them being ideally more stronger and advanced#it’s just neat !!!!!#tagging this with only#terra#sorry for talking so much😭#I proooomise I’m normal about him I don’t have very complex thoughts I’m just#insane over this whole series#asks

if having a fat clit is misogynistic then i'm so so sorry for the damage it has caused to the feminist movement 😞
cis women should take a lil testosterone and grow that Thang out too. don't be afraid to evolve.
#terfs are genuinely miserable for getting so riled up over this silly post#being this bothered over the use of the word “evolve” here as if it's supposed to be a disparagement of women's bodies over men's and not#the humorous word choice it's actually meant to be is just making you all look fucking insecure to be frank#if men > women is what you're reading into this post get a grip i beg of you and consider that everyone has varying levels of T and E in#their bodies and a joke post about women raising their natural T levels to get a big Thang ain't nothing more than what it says on the tin#you're all reading WAY too much into it and please reconsider your own personal biases of what hormones are superior to others#and stop projecting it on me. if a cis man took E he can ~evolve~ too there's beautiful diversity in the human form#and taking this post so seriously and twisting it into what it's not is only making you look fucking stupid#but you're all reactionaries so being humorless and annoying is part of your MO i guess#go bond with your sexist trump-loving uncles over your shared hatred of trans people because you all have more in common with guys like him#than you'll ever admit#also trans acceptance is on the rise and you'll have to contend with that for the rest of your lives and die mad about it like every other#bigot who has stood against postive social change and the advancement of queer rights in the past so uhhhh cope seethe etc.

A minute of your time can help my family survive. 🍉🇵🇸
Imagine losing your home and having no shelter. Imagine your father losing his livelihood, the business he built brick by brick since 1994. This business became his second home, maybe even his soul was tied to it just as much as to his children. Suddenly, everything is gone, and you lose everything. This is what we are going through and what my father is suffering from, a deep sadness and heartbreak.
We hope you can help us and give us some of your time to donate or reblog or share our story so that we can stand up again in this harsh life. Your donation and sharing our story are not just simple acts; they are like giving life back to my family and mean the world to us. Thank you in advance for your support. 🙏
"Please reblog or donate as much as you can."
Thank you, Tumblr community, for your support and generosity towards me.

Manipulation is Overrated
If a person teaches another how manipulation works, whether through instruction or example, once that person understands what it is and how it works, one cannot really be expected to genuinely be susceptible to manipulation. If a person sees through manipulation and wants to discourage it because it's unpleasant, the person will be more likely to refuse to comply with whatever it is the manipulator wants from that person, and the manipulation effort is therefore counterproductive. If such a person seeing through manipulation instead chooses to disregard the manipulation attempt and evaluate what is being requested based solely on the merits of said request and the person's potential ability to comply, then whether the person complies or not is based on one's ability, willingness, goodwill, etc. In such a case, the manipulation effort is a complete waste of energy, since simply making the request in a more direct and reasonable way yields the same result. Thus, even when manipulation appears to get results, it might not really be the manipulation effort that did it, especially when dealing with people of high intelligence and/or ones who have been exposed to manipulative behavior enough to have figured it out.
In cases where a person is manipulated often because that person remains (for whatever reason) continually and genuinely clueless about what is going on, it tends to be a situation that is actually harmful for not only the manipulated person, but also the person(s) doing the manipulating, even if such people are unable to see the ways in which long-term dependence on manipulating others hinders themselves.
Although considered by many to be a useful tool in some situations... in general, manipulative behavior may be evaluated to be of very limited usefulness, except where dependence upon it becomes a nasty habit that eventually causes far more harm to both individual and group social growth and maturity.

Give your protagonist flaws.
Some examples of character flaws that can add humanity to your protagonist
Stubbornness
Stubbornness can cause your protagonist to cling to their viewpoints, even when they know they are wrong, often leading to conflicts with others. This trait can create dramatic tension and drive the narrative forward as the protagonist struggles with the consequences of their inflexibility.
Michael, a seasoned detective, refuses to consider new evidence that contradicts his initial theory about a case. His stubbornness leads to conflicts with his team and delays in solving the case.
Impatience
Impatience can make your protagonist demand immediate results, struggling with long-term goals or slower processes. This flaw can add layers to their journey, showing the difficulties they face in learning the value of patience and strategic planning.
Celeste, an aspiring entrepreneur, rushes the development of her new app, pushing her team to the brink. Her impatience results in a product that is not ready for launch, jeopardizing her startup's future.
Self-Doubt
Self-doubt, despite evident skills and achievements, can impair the protagonist's decision-making and actions. This internal conflict adds a relatable dimension, making their journey toward self-acceptance and confidence compelling.
Jordan, a talented musician, constantly questions his abilities despite receiving praise from peers and critics. His self-doubt hinders him from seizing opportunities that could advance his career.
Short Temper
A short temper can cause your protagonist to react aggressively to provocations or challenges, creating interpersonal issues. This flaw can drive subplots involving reconciliation, personal growth, and the learning of emotional control.
Maria, a brilliant surgeon, often lashes out at her colleagues and patients under pressure. Her short temper strains her professional relationships and threatens her career.
Selfishness
Selfishness can lead the protagonist to place their own needs and desires above others, costing them sympathy and support. This flaw can create opportunities for the character to learn empathy and the importance of selflessness.
Chris, a charismatic lawyer, often prioritizes his career over his family, missing important events and neglecting relationships. His selfishness alienates those who care about him, forcing him to reevaluate his choices.
Arrogance
Arrogance can make your protagonist overestimate their abilities and underestimate challenges, leading to dangerous or embarrassing situations. This flaw provides a platform for the character to learn humility and the value of listening to others.
Mandy, a top student, dismisses her classmates' ideas during group projects, believing she knows best. Her arrogance leads to friction and eventually to a significant mistake that humbles her.
Trust Issues
Trust issues can make it difficult for your protagonist to trust others, hindering teamwork and relationships. This trait can create tension and development opportunities as the character learns to open up and rely on others.
Liam, a former spy, finds it hard to trust anyone due to past betrayals. His trust issues complicate his relationships and collaboration with a new team.
Perfectionism
Perfectionism can lead your protagonist to set unrealistically high standards, never being content with their or others' performance. This flaw can drive stories about the struggle for balance and acceptance of imperfection.
Olivia, an artist, is never satisfied with her work, constantly striving for an unattainable level of perfection. Her perfectionism causes stress and burnout, affecting her creativity and personal life.
Fear of Change
Fear of change can make your protagonist cling to the familiar and avoid necessary or beneficial changes. This resistance can create narrative tension as they are forced to confront and adapt to evolving circumstances.
Jamie, a successful business owner, resists adopting new technologies or methods in his company. His fear of change threatens his business's relevance and growth.
Haunted by the Past
Being haunted by past mistakes or traumas can influence your protagonist's present behavior and decisions. This flaw adds a rich backstory and provides a path for emotional development and overcoming personal demons.
Zack, a war veteran, is haunted by his experiences in combat. His traumatic past affects his current relationships and decisions, leading him on a journey of healing and redemption.

Reader, it has happened already. Less than a month after it debuted, the Black Mirror episode Joan Is Awful has already become the unlikely figurehead of the strike. It's the story of a woman who, at the end of each day, realises with horror that her actions have been folded into a Dropout-style biographical drama, where all her bad traits and regrettable decisions are played out onscreen by Salma Hayek. Except, as the episode goes along, we learn that it isn’t Hayek at all; it’s an AI-generated likeness of Hayek, commissioned by unethical executives working for a monolithic streaming platform. It couldn’t be more timely. A sticking point of the Sag-Aftra strike is the potential that AI could soon render all screen actors obsolete. Chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland laid bare the AMPTP’s so-called “groundbreaking AI proposal,” which holds the potential to wipe out an entire pathway to breaking into the industry, as well as a reliable source of income for many. The reported proposal hinged on the ability for background actors to be “scanned, get paid for one day’s pay” and for that company to “own that scan of their image, their likeness, and to be able to use it for the rest of eternity in any project they want with no consent and no compensation.” It’s a similar line to the one currently taken by the striking WGA writers. Eventually, they claim, technology will advance enough to make an AI-generated script that is indistinguishable from one created by a human. These scripts would be cheap and instant, and – even though they’re essentially composite jobs, made by scraping existing scripts – they would immediately put an entire profession out of work.
fellas, we're really in it (a black mirror episode) now

« To mention the global loss of biodiversity, that is to say, the disappearance of life on our planet, as one of our problems, along with air pollution or ocean acidification, is absurd—like a doctor listing the death of his patient as one symptom among others.
The ecological catastrophe cannot be reduced to the climate crisis. We must think about the disappearance of life in a global way. About two-thirds of insects, wild mammals and trees disappeared in a few years, a few decades and a few millennia, respectively. This mass extinction is not mainly caused by rising temperatures, but by the devastation of natural habitats.
Suppose we managed to invent clean and unlimited energy. This technological feat would be feted by the vast majority of scientists, synonymous in their eyes with a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions. In my opinion, it would lead to an even worse disaster. I am deeply convinced that, given the current state of our appetites and values, this energy would be used to intensify our gigantic project of systemic destruction of planetary life. Isn't that what we've set out to do—replace forests with supermarket parking lots, turn the planet into a landfill? What if, to cap it all, energy was free?
[...C]limate change has emerged as our most important ecological battle [...] because it is one that can perpetuate the delusional idea that we are faced with an engineering problem, in need of technological solutions. At the heart of current political and economic thought lies the idea that an ideal world would be a world in which we could continue to live in the same way, with fewer negative externalities. This is insane on several levels. Firstly because it is impossible. We can't have infinite growth in a finite world. We won't. But also, and more importantly, it is not desirable. Even if it were sustainable, the reality we construct is hell. [...]
It is often said that our Western world is desacralised. In reality, our civilisation treats the technosphere with almost devout reverence. And that's worse. We perceive the totality of reality through the prism of a hegemonic science, convinced that it “says” the only truth.
The problem is that technology is based on a very strange principle, so deeply ingrained in us that it remains unexpressed: no brakes are acceptable, what can be done must be done. We don't even bother to seriously and collectively debate the advisability of such "advances". We are under a spell. And we are avoiding the essential question: is this world in the making, standardised and computed, overbuilt and predictable, stripped of stars and birds, desirable?
To confine science to the search for "solutions" so we can continue down the same path is to lack both imagination and ambition. Because the “problem” we face doesn't seem to me, at this point, to be understood. No hope is possible if we don't start by questioning our assumptions, our values, our appetites, our symbols... [...] Let's stop pretending that the numerous and diverse human societies that have populated this planet did not exist. Certainly, some of them have taken the wrong route. But ours is the first to forge ahead towards guaranteed failure. »
— Aurélien Barrau, particle physicist and philosopher, in an interview in Télérama about his book L'Hypothèse K

Large language models like those offered by OpenAI and Google famously require vast troves of training data to work. The latest versions of these models have already scoured much of the existing internet which has led some to fear there may not be enough new data left to train future iterations. Some prominent voices in the industry, like Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, have posited a solution to that data dilemma: simply train new AI systems on old AI outputs.
But new research suggests that cannibalizing of past model outputs would quickly result in strings of babbling AI gibberish and could eventually lead to what’s being called “model collapse.” In one example, researchers fed an AI a benign paragraph about church architecture only to have it rapidly degrade over generations. The final, most “advanced” model simply repeated the phrase “black@tailed jackrabbits” continuously.
A study published in Nature this week put that AI-trained-on-AI scenario to the test. The researchers made their own language model which they initially fed original, human-generated text. They then made nine more generations of models, each trained on the text output generated by the model before it. The end result in the final generation was nonessential surrealist-sounding gibberish that had essentially nothing to do with the original text. Over time and successive generations, the researchers say their model “becomes poisoned with its own projection of reality.”

9 Out-of-This-World Moments for Space Communications & Navigation in 2023
How do astronauts and spacecraft communicate with Earth?
By using relay satellites and giant antennas around the globe! These tools are crucial to NASA’s space communications networks: the Near Space Network and the Deep Space Network, which bring back science and exploration data every day.
It’s been a great year for our space communications and navigation community, who work to maintain the networks and enhance NASA’s capabilities. Keep scrolling to learn more about our top nine moments.
The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Dragon spacecraft lifts off from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, on the company's 29th commercial resupply services mission for the agency to the International Space Station. Liftoff was at 8:28 p.m. EST.
1. In November, we launched a laser communications payload, known as ILLUMA-T, to the International Space Station. Now, ILLUMA-T and the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) are exchanging data and officially complete NASA’s first two-way, end-to-end laser relay system. Laser communications can send more data at once than traditional radio wave systems – think upgrading from dial-up to fiber optic internet. ILLUMA-T and LCRD are chatting at 1.2 gigabits per second (Gbps). At that rate, you could download an average movie in under a minute.
NASA’s InSight lander captured this selfie on Mars on April 24, 2022, the 1,211th Martian day, or sol, of the mission.
2. Data analyzed in 2023 from NASA’s retired InSight Mars lander provided new details about how fast the Red Planet rotates and how much it wobbles. Scientists leveraged InSight’s advanced radio technology, upgrades to the Deep Space Network, and radio signals to determine that Mars’ spin rate is increasing, while making the most precise measurements ever of Mars’ rotation.
TBIRD is demonstrating a direct-to-Earth laser communications link from low Earth orbit to a ground station on Earth.
3. We set a new high record! The TeraByte InfraRed Delivery (TBIRD) payload – also demonstrating laser communications like ILLUMA-T and LCRD – downlinked 4.8 terabytes of data at 200 Gbps in a single 5-minute pass. This is the highest data rate ever achieved by laser communications technology. To put it in perspective a single terabyte is the equivalent of about 500 hours of high-definition video.
A 34-meter (112-foot) wide antenna at Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex near Canberra, Australia.
4. This year we celebrated the Deep Space Network’s 60th anniversary. This international array of antennas located at three complexes in California, Spain, and Australia allow us to communicate with spacecraft at the Moon and beyond. Learn more about the Deep Space Network’s legacy and future advancements.
An illustration of the LunaNet architecture. LunaNet will bring internet-like services to the Moon.
5. We are bringing humans to the Moon with Artemis missions. During expeditions, astronauts exploring the surface are going to need internet-like capabilities to talk to mission control, understand their routes, and ensure overall safety. The space comm and nav group is working with international partners and commercial companies to develop LunaNet, and in 2023, the team released Draft LunaNet Specification Version 5, furthering development.
The High-Rate Delay Tolerant Networking node launched to the International Space Station in November and will act as a high-speed path for data.
6. In addition to laser communications, ILLUMA-T on the International Space Station is also demonstrating high-rate delay/disruption tolerant networking (HDTN). The networking node is showcasing a high-speed data path and a store-and-forward technique. HDTN ensures data reaches its final destination and isn’t lost on its path due to a disruption or delay, which are frequent in the space environment.
The Communications Services Project (CSP) partners with commercial industry to provide networking options for future spaceflight missions.
7. The space comm and nav team is embracing the growing aerospace industry by partnering with commercial companies to provide multiple networking options for science and exploration missions. Throughout 2023, our commercialization groups engaged with over 110 companies through events, one-on-one meetings, forums, conferences, and more. Over the next decade, NASA plans to transition near-Earth services from government assets to commercial infrastructure.
Middle and high school students solve a coding experiment during NASA's Office of STEM Engagement App Development Challenge.
8. Every year, NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement sponsors the App Development Challenge, wherein middle and high school students must solve a coding challenge. This year, student groups coded an application to visualize the Moon’s South Pole region and display information for navigating the Moon’s surface. Our space communications and navigation experts judged and interviewed students about their projects and the top teams visited NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston!
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket soars upward after liftoff at the pad at 3:27 a.m. EDT on Saturday, Aug. 26, from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A in Florida carrying NASA’s SpaceX Crew-7 crew members to the International Space Station. Aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft are NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Andreas Mogensen, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov.
9. The Near Space Network supported 19 launches in 2023! Launches included Commercial Crew flights to the International Space Station, science mission launches like XRISM and the SuperBIT balloon, and many more. Once in orbit, these satellites use Near Space Network antennas and relays to send their critical data to Earth. In 2023, the Near Space Network provided over 10 million minutes of communications support to missions in space.
Here’s to another year connecting Earth and space.
