Man David Lynch is a useful ass guy. You meet a guy who just isn’t into him or hasn’t watched his stuff you can go okay that’s totally fair I understand why the idiosyncrasies could be off putting. But you meet a guy who hates his work, especially someone who also wants you to take their opinions on film seriously? Instant 3 strikes. We’re not working with someone serious here we’re working with someone who still hasn’t moved past the “tonally deadpan drama is the greatest form of filmmaking on earth”.

First there's laughter. Joy. Warmth.

The wind gently caresses his face as he keeps running in the grass field. He takes a look at his hand, then up to the sky. His beloved kite is flying high, right beside him. He looks over at his mom and dad, sitting happily on a picnic table. They motion for him to come over.

Then there's screaming. Terror. Cold.

He walks into the living room only to find his mother on the floor. Her screams are overwhelming to his little ears, he's just woken up, he doesn't understand. He follows his mother's gaze, right there in the middle of the room, there's a body hanging from the ceiling. Takes a second for him to realize that it's his father.

Makarov shoots up from the bed in cold sweat, his chest is heavy as he gasps for breath. The same dream haunts him ever since he was a little child. His father's lifeless body hangs from the ceiling, the image flashes his mind everytime he closes his eyes. Rest is foreign to him. It's hard to focus, so much that he doesn't even notice Nolan standing by the door. "Komandir?"

Makarov shivers, sweat sticking to his skin, he looks up to the door with glassy eyes. "What?" it comes out weak, he's surprised.

"You called my name. Is everything alright?" Nolan replies, concern evident in his voice. He lets himself in and walks towards his commander.

"I did?" Makarov doesn't remember and he hates it. Hates the look of worry in his subordinates eyes, hates being caught so vulnerable. Hates it even more that he couldn't handle his shit in private, and had alerted the others.

"You were screaming, sir." Nolan carefully sits on the bed next to him. It's late, Nolan still has his work suit on. Makarov tries to focus on his breathing, to get his mind together. His attention snaps to Andrei as the man gently reaches out to him and holds his trembling hands.

"Deep breaths, sir. You're alright." His voice is so caring, so gentle that Makarov wants to throw up. The tremble in his hands don't go away as he starts to spiral even further. Is there any recovering from this? Will Nolan think less of him now? Is he fit to lead? Will his father forgive him?

He doesn't get to dwell on it for too long though, as Andrei quickly pulls Makarov into his arms, tucking his face into the crook of his neck. It's warm, Andrei's grip on him is tight and grounding. "Andrei..." He lets out. It's weak. It's wrong. Makarov shouldn't be in this position. Makarov doesn't do that. He reaches a hand up to Andrei's back and holds him tightly, burying his face in the mans neck even further.

Nolan doesn't think any less of him. He's stunned, of course, by the reminder that Makarov was also simply human. He put up such a tough front that you could forget it at times. Nolan rubs slow circles on his back, holding him close and whispering reassurance. A grounding force in his moment of weakness. Andrei doesn't think about the way his heart breaks at the mans quiet sobs, his grip tightening and his entire body shaking with each breath he takes. Makarov is only human in his arms.

Debbie's is a least weasel named Bertilak. Mongoose didn't fit and somehow I ended up on the wiki page for weasels, and the fact there are several mythical beasts only they can kill made me go yes. Plus as a hilarious knife twist, the females raise their young alone lol Bertilak is the name of the Green Knight from mythology, who tests folks worthiness : ) She calls him Bert a lot, which he tolerates, and calls him Bertie when drunk, which he does not.

Nolan's is a dung beetle, or sacred scarab, named Undine. When I think uber strong types, I think of insects for the shear scaleage of strength. Plus like, 'big person has big daemon' is just yawn fest to me. These beetles are also associated with transformation, which is that fuck's whole thing. And some dung beetle's navigate by the light of the milky way. SPACE. They also rob each other, which is peak viltrumtie bs tbh Undine is a kind of water spirit that can die if the person they fall in love with is unfaithful : )

Mark's is a black dog named Alba. Who has more golden retriever energy than Mark? Besides, in the His Dark Material's universe, all servants have dog daemons, and I love the themes of great heroes needing to be servants to the people/society they want to protect and not benevolent overlords. Black dogs are also guardians of the dead/omens of death. Alba means dawn, I believe? I like her symbolizing newness, which Mark is to the universe.
