this is a bit late, about 9 months and 300 more followers late to be exact, but i didn't feel right ignoring the milestone and not extending my thank yous to every last person who helped me reach it ♡ i have been creating on tumblr since september 2022, and in that time i've taken 2 hiatuses that were about 5-7 months long each... and you guys stuck around in spite of that. i've always been shocked by the idea that my little part of tumblr was important enough for anyone to wait around for. for that, i thank you <3

Inktober Days 28-31

Day 28: Sparkle

When people ask me which national park I've worked in is my favorite, I have a diplomatic answer. They're all different! Yellowstone is never boring, Glacier is visually stunning. But Great Smoky Mountains? Great Smokies is home. It was my first park, even before Yellowstone--I was brought on as a summer intern in 2010, and it set the course for my whole career onward.

Where other national parks trade in dramatic grandeur, Great Smokies offers a more intimate beauty. The pale pops of Catawba rhododendron blossoms in the dark forest. The squiggle of a spotted salamander in dewy moss. The first flush of red on the autumn slopes. The Christmas-tree perfume of the balsam firs at high elevation. 

But some of the most special things to me are the fireflies. The secret of the synchronous fireflies has trickled out, and now people flock to see them in late spring, flashing in coordinated laser light shows. My absolute favorites are the blue ghost fireflies, which glow a moonlight-blue, without blinking, and drift a few feet above the ground. On a dark, quiet evening, it's the single most magical sight I've ever seen. So magical I built a whole fantasy system around them in my first novel, Woodwalker.

Day 29: Massive

There are so many parks whose scale simply can't be appreciated in photos. The yawning chasm of the Grand Canyon. The looming summits of Grand Teton. The plunging valleys of Glacier. And the massive span and height of sequoia trees.

Though this is a purely American tree, I've only experienced them abroad, when I lived in New Zealand. A short walk away from my student flat was a beautiful botanical garden, and I was amazed to find a grove of sequoias growing there. I greeted them like compatriots, foreigners in a faraway land. I visited them often and knew someday I needed to visit their cousins on their home turf. Like my fixation on Olympic National Park, I've frequently found myself plotting the drive from my Rocky Mountain jobs to the closest parks of sequoias and redwoods. I'll get there, one day.

Day 30: Rush

Yosemite—the rush of history toward the riches of the west, the rush of visitors in the valley, the rush of air through climbers’ ropes, the rush to protect endangered natural spaces. But to me, no homage to Yosemite is complete without rushing water. Plunging waterfalls, rivers foaming with spring melt, frigid banks piled with frazil ice--- this park sings with the power of water.

Day 31: Fire

We end Inktober 2023 in Hawai‛i Volcanoes National Park, a place where fire, earth, and water all meld together. At first I picked this park simply because it fit the prompt, but as I did some research, I realized how fitting it is to end this month-long celebration of national parks here. Built into the management policies for Hawai‛i Volcanoes is the practice of ho‛okupu, the action of creating growth through chanting or offerings. As Huihui Kanehele-Mossman, Kumu Hula and Executive Director at Edith Kanaka‛ole Foundation, puts it:

“[Ho‛okupu] is not showing gratitude… it’s a recognition between you and the place… that you are present there in order to have an exchange—an equal exchange between you and the place.”

As park rangers, we’re faced with tangible reminders of degradation every day—past, present, and future—in things like the violent history of land theft, the tenacious grip of invasive species, and the looming consequences of climate change. It’s easy for rangers to view both ourselves and the visiting public as interlopers and invaders, capable of only destruction, a force to be managed and mitigated.

But we’re not. That same force that enables us to destroy also enables us to restore, grow, and create. And as Robin Wall Kimmerer discusses in Braiding Sweetgrass, humans shouldn’t consider ourselves mere intruders in natural spaces. We evolved alongside nature. We do belong in it, and it relies on our power and gentleness as much as we rely on it.

Even beyond that, national parks are human-created spaces, with human boundaries, roads, infrastructure, and patterns. We have to be involved with them. We have to view ourselves as an integral part of their wellbeing, an equal partner, and a force for good, or we risk losing them to sheer indifference.

haha i feel like he shares more than u might think, there are a lot of little tidbits he shares on his weibo lives and such that mostly circulate among huihuis. which is probably true of every member, it makes sense that ppl would pay a bit closer attention/remember more details about their bias. but also tbf 90% of the things he talks about on lives or in fansigns etc. is literally just food so he can also get away with talking a lot without sharing much so i see where you're coming from DKJHG

when he was young he asked his mom why everyone had flowers that day and his mom explained valentine's day to him. when he realized his mom didn't have a valentine (because she was a single mother) he ran off when his mom wasn't looking and came back with a single rose ;-; (from this article about jun's childhood published from his child acting days, it's a good read with a bunch more obscure jun facts but this is my favorite story from it bc it feels like something out of a drama ;-;)

he learned to cook from his mom and grandma

he did martial arts as a kid bc he wanted to act in wuxia dramas

he also injured himself when doing martial arts at one point and developed spinal tuberculosis and had to get surgery

in highschool he was asked to join the modelling club but he declined

he WAS in the tennis club in highschool and joined it bc there was a tennis anime he thought was cool (i don't think he ever specified which show, it may have also been multiple animes where there were characters who played tennis that inspired him to join)

2. Disney dates where you are still in your uniforms

Kugisaki Nobara had put going to Tokyo Disneyland at the top of her list for things she must do while she was there. She had planned the matching outfits in her head, and if that didn’t work out then she would take wearing uniforms too.

After all, what high school girl wouldn’t like Disney?

But if there was a reason why she ended up forcing a reluctant Itadori Yuuji to go with her instead of the girl squad she had hoped for, it was because the number of girls in Jujutsu Tech was not nearly enough to form a squad.

“Can you believe that Maki san said that she wasn’t interested in coming?” Kugisaki groaned, pulling Itadori by the arm through the crowd, “She is a Tokyo native but she had never been to Disney for even once! That’s a waste!”.

The heavy handbag (Kugisaki’s handbag) slung onto his arm looked rather ridiculous as the much tinier Kugisaki yanked him to keep walking. Itadori sighed, biting his tongue on how he wasn’t even asked if he was interested to come or not.

The sunlight was at its worst when they got to the park, hitting right at an angle where he couldn’t hide from the burning sun no matter where he turned to. It was a Friday so naturally, the attractions were all crowded with people, with a good portion of each queue being out of the shades. He was sweating profusely under the high collar of his uniform, his hoodie soaked with sweat as it stuck to his skin.

He had so much respect for people who do this willingly, because he was already on the brink of giving up.

“If we go from here,” Kugisaki did not look nearly as bothered even with her stockings and her equally stuffy uniform, holding the map in one hand as she walked, “we can get to the other side of the park from the stores— wait…” Itadori jerked forward when she halted to a stop, suddenly pulling him to the side by his jacket.

Squeezing her eyes to focus, she gasped, “Oh my god…”

Completely lost as to what she was looking at, Itadori crouched down so that he was at her eye level and followed the direction of her gaze. “What?”

She grabbed his head and turned it to the side. Itadori’s lips fell into an o-shape when he finally saw what got her so shocked.

“No wonder why he said he was busy,” Kugisaki mused.

Through the green-tinted glasses, there stood Fushiguro Megumi who had no idea that he was being watched. You were rummaging through the rack of headbands with your back towards the window while he waited silently, looking very well-behaved as he nodded promptly each time you held a new one out to show him. He bent forward slightly each time you brought the ears out, letting you did as you wish when you pushed his hair down and tugged the large ears onto his head. His blank expression seemed out of place with the cartoonish accessory on his head but he still let you tried on each headband on him. They could not see you, but they could tell when you were laughing even without looking at your face from his fond expression. The corners of his lips always tugged up slightly when you took the headband off of him, ruffling his messed hair to fluff up where the band had pressed down before you turned your attention back to the racks.

They were never aware if Fushiguro was a Disney guy, but he just looked so happy and content.

“Let’s go,” Itadori was starting to feel invasive, tapping the girl in front of him on the shoulder.

“Sure,” Kugisaki replied. They were about to leave their hiding spot when she suddenly smirked, and pulled her phone out. She sniggered when she discretely tilted her phone towards the shop, “can’t miss the sight of Fushiguro in mouse ears.”

Fushiguro Megumi didn’t know why his classmates suddenly looked at him with such big smiles when he got to class the next day.

“Fushiguro,” Itadori sighed as he sat on Fushiguro’s desk with one leg, patting the latter on his back as he shook his head, “you’re such a good guy.”

Kugisaki crossed her legs, leaning on her elbow as she nodded, “You proved me wrong.”

“Huh?” Fushiguro said, pursing his eyebrows together in confusion and irritation, “what are you two on about?”

His face exploded in redness when he saw what was on Kugisaki’s screen.

“Delete this,” he gritted, loosening his collar with his index finger as the heat spread to his neck.

“But why?” Itadori groaned.

“Yeah! It’s cute,” Kugisaki nodded wildly, “but I sent this to (y/n) earlier so…”

“Huh?!”

Jinho:

With your wrist pinned above your head and husband pounding into you, it was hard to hear anything but the both of you. Jinho whispered in your ear, “I think Mina would love, a little sibling. Is that what you want love? Another baby.” His words nearly take you over the edge until you hear crying. “J-Jinho, wait. I think she’s up.” Your husband stops his movements and hears the same thing. “Is she in the room?” He asked, pulling out of you and turning around. Low and behold stood your 3 year old daughter. “Fuck.” Jinho mumbled. You hit his arm and began speaking to your child with open arms. “Mina, what’s wrong baby?” She walked over for you to pick her up. “I had a bad dream. There was loud noises. I went to the noise and its here.” You pout your bottom lip at her. “It’s okay princess, let’s get you back comfy. Go to your table and I’ll heat you up some milk.” She nodded and went to her table. Jinho looked at you and started speaking but you cut him off. “Absolutely not.” Now it’s Jinho’s turn to pout. “She’s going to your mom’s next week.”

Hongseok:

Seok was very sure he locked the door. So when your 5 year old twins busted in as Hongseok fucked you in the mirror with the camera on, he felt terrible. Immediately He covered you and yelled at the boys not to look. The twins turned around as Hongseok got everything situated. “Okay, Daddy’s sorry for yelling, you can come in now.” He says and the boys came in and hugged you both. “Why are you two up at 3 am?” You asked stroking the younger of the two’s head. “Haneul had a bad dream then scared me too.” Hyunmin said cuddling into your side. “Can we sleep with you please?” Haneul asked with puppy dog eyes, (like his father.) Hongseok nods and tucks them in between you both before telling them a story he made up on the spot.

Hui/Hwitaek:

After a long hard day at work, Hui just wanted to endulge in you. Anywhere, anytime. Being able to take you on the kitchen counter was more than enough for him. When your son walked in with his protective blanket, you know something wasn’t right. Thankfully, he wasn’t looking completely so you began to push off Hui and fix yourselves just in time. “Jisung?” Hwitaek addressed his son and picked him up. Surprisingly, this made you son cry more as he held on dearly to his father. “Talk to me Sungie.” Your husband coddled Jisung. “I miss you daddy, please dont go.” This of course confused Hui. “I think you had a bad dream. I’m not going anywhere. Let’s go to bed” He says and pats your sons back.

Changgu/Yeoone:

Changgu literally just put the kids to sleep. But at the same time he couldn’t keep his hands off of you. The second your bedroom door shut, he ripped off your clothes and began pleasuring you with mouth. Just as you neared our climax, there was a small knock on your door. Quickly you tapped on his head to inform him of this. Changgu sighed before throwing the blanket over your private bits and opening the door. There stood your youngest child with the biggest tears you’ve seen in your life. “I sleep with you please daddy?” She says wiping her eyes. “Absolutely.”

Shinwon:

Surprisingly enough this was your 4th round at it and it was 5 am. You bounced on Shinwon as he tightly grasped your hips. “Fuck, you ride me so well.” He mumbled against your neck. You began to scratch at his chest but then felt a little dip in your bed. Neither of you thought too much about it until you heard a soft sniffle. Both of your attention turned to the 3 year old laying on her side facing away from the two of you. Panic rose in the two of your eyes as you both looked at each other but you moved calmly. Quietly and slowly getting off the bed to put on your under clothes at minimum before sliding back into the bed. When you went to ask what was going on, she already was soundly asleep. You and Shinwon decided not to prompt her on it but join her in sleep.

Yanan:

He finally came home after being on tour and doing shows and you really missed him. Every night leading up to this one, you promised that the day would be all about him. Yanan sat in the chair as you worked your oral magic on him with ice cubes in your mouth. His sensitivity was severely high, so high in fact that his other senses were heightened and he actually heard your 5 year old son come close to the door. “Xiaohui is coming.” He warns you and you immediately pop up as he fixed his pants. Not a second later, your son knocks on the door and you let him in. “Monsters aren’t real, right?” He asks immediately. Yanan chuckles a bit and you shoot him a look. “No HuiHui, but if you want, I can still check the room for you.” You say and push the stray hairs out of your son’s hair. “Please.” He asks and holds on to your wrist.

Yuto:

You both were in the shower getting clean but Yuto looked a little too good under the water. He noticed you staring and started flexing a bit for you. After some teasing and messing around, he began to fuck you against the shower wall. “Come for me babe.” He whispers in your ear and you do just that. In that moment there were 3 loud bangs on the bathroom door. Normally you would be afraid it was an intruder but it was your 7 year old daughter. “What’s wrong Natsumi?” Yuto asked drying off and throwing on his basketball shorts. “Naoki is having a nightmare and keeps talking about some big bug and I can’t sleep.” This wasn’t the first time your son had a sleeptalking nightmare. “Okay, we’ll be there in a minute.” You responded through the door. Once you both were dressed, you went to your sons side with a glass of warm milk.

Kino/Hyunggu:

Hyunggu had you pinned against the couch. Your legs completely spread apart as he rocked his hips into yours. Well explaining how he was a father of 3. “Are you gonna give me a daughter love?” You nodded your head agreeing to anything because, well...he was fucking you so well. His head now buried into your neck. “Dad?” Your oldest asked from behind the couch coming from his room. it was @onlymingyus who encouraged me to post my writing! i've been writing since i was a little kid and i've always wanted to work with books, and my dream is to work in the publishing industry as a literary agent or an editor, so my own writing is more of a side hobby. on tumblr i started as a silent reader and then eventually made my fic recs blog @junhui-recs and started talking to people like mars and the lovely members of svthub, and i was like well why not post my stuff too? then it took me a while to warm up to writing smut bc it wasn't what i was used to (and still isn't tbh, it's a struggle to write it sometimes) but it's so rewarding to share it with everyone and get to talk to other writers and carats :)

and i have no idea asgkdjfhs i honestly just write things that i like to read so it's catered to my own tastes lmao but i'm so so glad other ppl like to read them too 💓 it's so satisfying when i open tumblr looking for something very specific to read and i can open my own masterlist and find exactly what i imagined in my brain hehe. from what i've noticed my best fics are ones i've written when i was super emotional so maybe that's something? like if i'm feeling generally bored or unenthusiastic then my fics tend to be meh. i feel like it's super obvious bc when i feel bad about my fics it shows in my writing, so i try not to write when i'm not in a good place because i want my fics to be something i enjoy looking back on instead of cringing at myself 😭 i have a lot of fics in my google drive that will never ever see the light of day bc i cringe so hard at who i was when i wrote them lmao

but if you want a genuine answer for how i think that happened though i think it was in part pledis characterizing him as a "handsome guy" and partly bc jun was a LOT quieter back then, like he actually admitted recently that he didn't talk much when they first debuted bc he was afraid of saying something wrong ;-;

like i said in my tags, i don't think his personality was all that different back then, he had moments of cuteness and moments of self-praise. but bc he didn't talk as much generally, it was easier to brush aside/not focus on some things. and like now we see jun's self-praise as endearing and part of his cuteness, but i think back in the day it was easy to pair the self love with his handsome image and assume a confident and almost arrogant character. and then the cuteness was seen either as a secondary aspect or was ignored to fit the narrative

and then of course those traits got exaggerated more and more which tends to happen with fandom in general. and this definitely happened with other members too, but i think of SVT, jun's case might be the most extreme (? if that's the right word to use). not just bc the image he had among the fandom contrasted so much w his personality (bc i think that's pretty common) but mostly bc of how long and widespread that image lasted

like others might have a different perception, but from my perspective, when i joined the fandom in 2017 that image was still very much alive. it wasn't until 2018 with CYZJ and SVT club that i saw that image start to be challenged widely in the fandom. and honestly i don't think it was until 2020 (with 2020 gose especially) that his cute image completely overtook/erased his sort of fuckboy image

like from 2018-2019 his cute image was definitely building so if you became a carat at that time you might not be that familiar with his old image, but it was definitely still present in the fandom. but from my memory i swear 2020 was the first time I saw people, including non-huihuis consistently introduce jun as the "funny or cute member" as opposed to "the handsome member" or even something more neutral like "one of the chinese members"

also u know those posts ppl make about their bias where they're frustrated that others don't see them as complex human beings? the ones that are formatted something like: "guys [member] isn't just [x trait], they're also [other traits]". i swear to god i did not see huihui's start off posts like that saying "guys jun isn't just the funny/cute member" until 2020. before that it was always something like, "guys jun isn't just the handsome member"

and the first time I saw it I was SO confused bc i was like??? but don't we WANT jun to be seen as the funny/cute member? like that's a side of him so many ppl haven't seen or paid attention to for YEARS we should be celebrating the fact ppl are finally seeing him this way. but it really has become his main image now DHFKFJ (which i still think is a good thing, at least compared to the alternative)

J: kind and selfless to a fault, willing to sacrifice himself if it means letting the ppl he cares about flourish. he's very shy, yet at the same time, very easily excitable. he's a child at heart, but he'll only open up to ppl he is closed to. he clings to his members, seeking affection, playing pranks on them as a way to show his affection toward them. childish & clingy, but incredibly intelligent and clever. he's faced a lot of hardships, but the fact that he always holds a positive attitude is amazing. he's not greedy nor takes things for granted, he knows how to appreciate what he has, but constantly aims to ameliorate himself. he forces himself to be confident bc it helps him believe in himself in order to keep going. he's very humble about himself, but will throw a parade for his members. non-huihuis often see him as a weirdo, but i see it as him finally being comfortable enough to show us his lovable and eccentric quirks. overall, junnie is an adorable and sweet kid, who loves his members and triggers people's motherly instincts 😆 (god, i love him so much)

HS: spazzy but intense. we all know how he gets when he's excited and having fun lol. he's among the moodmakers, the one always ready to cheer you on and offer to help you. he is very kind and generous, and yes, spazzy lol. on the flip side, when it comes time to work, he is INTENSE. he's hard on himself AND his members. he knows when to stop goofing and get serious. he may be a little clueless when it comes to most things, but he's far from dumb. super passionate and determined.

WW: the hot nerd jk 😂 idk how it's possible for someone to be such a perfect blend of: confidence, intelligence, kindness, and playfulness. (not to say that the others are shallow FAR FROM IT), but wonu is just so deep? in everything he does, he puts in so much thought, carefully choosing his words and actions. he's the cool kid that gets cooler as you spend time with him. he tends to be on the quieter side (when not having fun with the rest of them), but he knows how to take charge and be assertive when he needs to. the way he cares for his members isn't obvious as some others, but it's there, subtle yet significant. something else i really appreciate from him is the amount of thoughtfulness he puts into something he knows is important--not necessarily for himself, but for others. like how he took the time to learn flower language bc fans gave him flowers, or how he continuously wore the bracelet that jun's mom gave 96z. and his determination and sheer willpower. god, that clip from HTR. he was ready to collapse, yet didn't allow himself to. the fact he was able to push forward and finish the show speaks volumes of his sense of responsibility and determination. *sigh* jeon wonu, you are the perfect man

WZ: tough marshmallow lol. bc he's strict, but also super soft and sweet! haha. if WW comes across as closed off at first sight, then WZ is basically a hermit lol. he's very shy, but he's grown to be confident and proud of what he's accomplished. of course there are still fears and worries, but he's by no means hesitant or indecisive when it comes to what he wants from his music. passionate and serious, but still sweet and caring. a man of few words, but many melodies and poems~

T8: very goal-orientated and ambitious. a realistic, but still able to dream and create beautiful art pieces that require imagination. a romantic. kind and sweet, but not overtly emotional. down to earth and practical. (the same can be said for wonhoon too but) not someone to condone BS lol. protective of his members. won't hesitate to snap back if there is injustice or unfairness. despite the serious attitude, a real loving kid.

MG: mr. perfect, with a slice of clumsiness jk 😂 a soft boy. the kind of friend you can count on. reliable and pleasant, friendly, outgoing. can get huffy at times, but it never lasts long. emotional. he just has A LOT of feels all the time about a lot of things. despite being pretty much perfect, he still strives to better himself, never letting his achievements get to his head. his clumsiness isn't limited to breaking/dropping things. some of the things he says sometimes does come across as a little tactless, but it's never with bad intentions. he's an all around GOOD BOY. very soft and gentle.

DK: the kindest soul~ most ppl see him as a little ditzy, and he does tend to be clueless and silly, but he has such a big heart. and a very good moodmaker! it's not for nothing that he's our sunshine! hahah. but he's so hardworking, too. and also super emotional. if MG channels his emotions through speeches and writing, then DK just lets his emotions flow out haha. it's raw and honest. not one to pretend or put on airs. what you see is what you get. an honest and kind boy :D

SK: sassy lol. he is such a delight tbh. one of the brightest spots in the universe. not only is he smart, he quick on his feet and can turn any situation around. sure, he nags and sasses his members, but he loves them so much??? also king at reading the mood in a room. king of entertainment. king of moodmakers. he can be loud and confident and funny and lead an entire show. but on the other hand, he is very sensitive and ALSO emotional. yes, he cries a lot lol, but he's also more likely to lash out when he's mad (which is actually hilarious to see ngl). among svt, he probably takes care of their image as idols the most lol.

VN: (anyone who comes to me with "VN stoner" comments will get smacked). he is a sweet and caring kid, mischievous at times, but doesn't have a bad bone in his entire body. yes, he's spacey, but he is true to himself and what he wants. he doesn't bend for trends or anybody's opinion, and i honestly find that admirable. even more so than josh, he is very mellow. he is much more of the listening type, but afterward, he will talk and give you his honest opinions. he doesn't mince words. very honest and true. also great supporter, even when he doesn't quite understand lol. while he seems pretty mature, the fact that he's still much a baby when it comes to everyday life is really cute.

DN: a very mature and independent young man. in a way, i think he's quite similar to Hao, with how he is very ambitious and strives to do/learn more and more, to hone in his skills. very passionate, too. he is very responsible and capable of taking the lead, which he does when it comes to dancing (only second to HS). he acts like a hyung lol (and you can see it pretty clearly in the way he and jun interact). i think he has an easier time being the maknae nowadays lol. a reliable young man full of passion!

oh, man. this is a huge essay 😅 i'm sorry it's so long! and i'm probably forgetting a bunch of details for each member, so pls don't get mad at me 🙏😭 these are just my own personal thoughts about each of them, even if they're lacking. all in all, we are very lucky to have 13 wonderful, kind, and talented young men.

Learning ancestry signifiers in China

Kublai Khan called both foreign Jews and Muslims in China Huihui when he forced them to stop halal and kosher methods of preparing food:[16]

"Among all the [subject] alien peoples only the Hui-hui say "we do not eat Mongol food". [Cinggis Qa’an replied:] "By the aid of heaven we have pacified you; you are our slaves. Yet you do not eat our food or drink. How can this be right?" He thereupon made them eat. "If you slaughter sheep, you will be considered guilty of a crime." He issued a regulation to that effect ... [In 1279/1280 under Qubilai] all the Muslims say: "if someone else slaughters [the animal] we do not eat". Because the poor people are upset by this, from now on, Musuluman [Muslim] Huihui and Zhuhu [Jewish] Huihui, no matter who kills [the animal] will eat [it] and must cease slaughtering sheep themselves, and cease the rite of circumcision."

The Chinese called Muslims, Jews and Christians in ancient times by the same name, Huihui. Christians were called "Hui who abstain from animals without the cloven foot", Muslims were called "Hui who abstain from pork", Jews were called "Hui who extract the sinews". Huihui is presently used almost exclusively for Muslims, but Jews were still called Lan mao Huihui which means "Blue cap Huihui".

Jews and Muslims in China shared the same name for synagogue and mosque, which were both called Qingzhen Si ("temple of purity and truth") from the thirteenth century. Synagogues and mosques were also known as Libai Si ("temple of worship"). The Kaifeng Jews were nicknamed Teaou kin jiao (挑筋教, "extract sinew religion"). A tablet indicated that Judaism was once known as Yih-tsze-lo-nee-keaou (一赐乐业教, "Israelitish religion") and the synagogue known as Yih-tsze lo née leen ("Israelitish temple"), but this fell from use.[17]

The widespread and rather generic application of the name Huihui in Ming China was attested to by foreign visitors as well. Matteo Ricci, the first Jesuit to reach Beijing(1598), noted that "Saracens are everywhere in evidence . . . their thousands of families are scattered about in nearly every province"[18] Ricci noted that the term Huihuior Hui was applied by Chinese not only to "Saracens" (Muslims) but also to Chinese Jews and supposedly even to Christians.[19] In fact, when the reclusive Wanli Emperor first saw a picture of Ricci and Diego de Pantoja, he supposedly exclaimed, "Hoei, hoei. It is quite evident that they are Saracens", and had to be told by a eunuch that they actually weren't, "because they ate pork"

In the late 16th century, Western cartography was introduced to China by Matteo Ricci, who produced the Kunyu Wanguo Quantu, China's first world map, in 1602. The Wanli Emperor, who commissioned Ricci's map, subsequently ordered Ricci's colleagues Diego de Pantoja and Sabatino de Ursis to produce a book explaining the geography of the new countries shown; their work was eventually edited, compiled and revised by Giulio Aleni. In 1623, the book was finally published by Yang Tingyun in Hangzhou, and three years later was later reissued in a revised edition in Fujian.[3][4]

The existence of Jews in China was unknown to Europeans until 1605, when Matteo Ricci, then established in Beijing, was visited by a Jew from Kaifeng, who had come to Beijing to take examinations for his jinshi degree. According to his account in De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas,[7][8] his visitor, named Ai Tian (Ai T'ien; 艾田), explained that he worshipped one God. It is recorded that when he saw a Christian image of Mary with Jesus, he believed it to be a picture of Rebecca with Esau or Jacob. Ai said that many other Jews resided in Kaifeng; they had a splendid synagogue (礼拜寺 libai si) and possessed a great number of written materials and books.
