Ok so. We know that J4 has to either hate Porter so so much or want him completely no in between. How does it look like her relationship with J3 when she does want Porter
I'm so sorry this took so long bc i sincerely had to like sit and think about this for AGES bc im like. It's such a good question and honestly i still feel like my answer would be vague and formless.
Im thinking just bc like. I do think J4 if she were to commit to porter would want him so completely and honestly? Be the meanest and worst one about sharing. Like I do think she could always have a soft spot for J3 but i do think J4 being with Porter would be like a huge point of tension for them even tho there's a part of J3 that is like. Idk, he feels like this SHOULD be something he wants, like its a joke abt j3 doing puzzles in his head w the fox and the hen and the bag of grain to cross the river whenever he's with Porter and J4 at the same time like in his head thats the threesome of his dreams and everything he could want. And like. I think he could be able to glean some enjoyment from it if J4 is gonna be sharing (lets say she is, lets say she wants them both)
But like i do think J3's freaked out especially initially and can't exactly reconcile this change in j4. Like. She seems like she might be... happier? Born to love Porter cliffbreaker after all. But he knows her so well and like. Is this really her choice? She's the one who wanted to carve out her own path so like. He wants her to be happy but. Is this some sort of tragedy?
(Is he upset because she was supposed to be the one to Make It? And maybe he could've gone with her? Does he resent her for giving up? Maybe it's unfair to view her as his savior, to put that onto her. But even if she was supposed to leave him, she was supposed to be the one to make it, right? She wanted it so badly, doesn't she deserve it?)
And I do think there is a bit of a shift in. The hierarchies of Jacedom if J4 were to decide she wanted to be with Porter. Like i think J3 and J4 were often allied because Jace is the saint and J2 is the precious gift, while they were the weaker dogs. And J3 is probably higher in the hierarchy than her but. But tbh, if J4 wanted it, she could probably supercede him, she has that pull while J3 has always been kinda disposable. J4 was just ok with being the outcast b/c its more important to be true to herself and rebel. But i do see J4 if she were to commit to porter would be very pointed about being his kinda right hand attack dog, but she might even be able to leverage with porter on the occasion (never push it too far tho. Or if she does, sadly bc she can't escape the narrative, she would end up being put back in her place which feels gross to say but like. Is part of the not escaping the narrative thing). Out of everyone, J4 i think could become the closes to understanding what it takes to be The Cunt Porter Married
And I could see J4 using that power like. J3 is kinda at her mercy i guess? like she has a soft spot for him so i could definitely see her coming to porter and trying to elevate him, involve him. Maybe roping j3 in when they're like Together is her favorite thing to do. But in a way that is a little Comforts of Gilded Cage coded? J3 is her little pet. Like... follow me here but J3 is J4Porter's new j2... But also if she's pissed at him its like. They don't fucking talk and life is hell for him. He's back to being ignored and disposable.
Alternatively, and maybe more fun, I could also see j3j4 as infidelity coded lol. Like J4Porter is j4 trying to maintain some power and autonomy in that she made this choice to be the cunt porter married but also like. J3 is her boytoy mistress on the side that like everyone kinda knows about but doesn't look directly at. That could definitely be fun.

top five favorite movies!!!!
tumblr crashed right after I was done writing this up for the first time bruh...
First of all, thank you so much for asking 🫶🩵and also... I've literally been thinking about this the whole weekend while I was working on finishing this post 😹💚(I love letterboxd so much, I really need to use it more!)
So my initial top 3 were all sorta my nr.1 of different categories, so I’ll expand that concept for my top 5
Kingsman The Secret Service 💛-> Nr.1 movie to rec to/chat with action enjoyers! (I’m not superr big on that genre myself, but the choreo in that movie is soo good! + the fanfics are incredible lmao)
The Social Network 💙-> Nr.1 movie to engage w/ ppl interested in film! (I could talk about so many of the technical details like shot composition & editing for hours + the acting! + also the fanfics are really good while also adding the hilarious detail of reading mark Zuckerberg rpf lmao)
Frozen 2 🩵-> Nr.1 movie to make me cry in the theater (I rarely cry in public, so this is a huge achievement! Tho the stage performance I watched last year made me tear up even worse ngl)
Inside & Make Happy by Bo Burnham 🤍 -> Make Happy = Nr.1 comedy special (most rewatched bo burnham special before inside came out + why are the songs still not on spotify?!) and Inside as his Nr.1 masterpiece (so far)
Dead Poets Soceity 💔-> Nr.1 movie of making me feel all kinds of emotions all at once + making my inner tragedy enjoyer & fix-it fanfic lover constantly fight eachother! Also I cannot listen to “the lakes” by Taylor Swift without thinking of them 🥺 (btw everytime I visit your profile @lumiereandcogsworth my brain starts singing that song, so I am considering suing you for emotional compensation 🥺😹🩵)
Ask me my top 5 of literally anything

(Hello yes it is I on anon again same person that talked about the forbidden love eeeehehehe I have social anxiety) THE PAIN OF GRIAN THINKING HE CANT SHOW LOVE OUTSIDE THE GAMES AUGSHDJKD :’)
He is so dumb. Stupid little baby man *i say while cradling him in my hands like a terrible kitten with communication issues*
Also for forbidden love angst mayhaps I throw in some more brainrot ✨
Braining so hard over scarian in literally any setting, au or otherwise, where all their exchanges of love and affection are kept completely secret. Full Romeo and Juliet style because I am a complete bitch for that trope despite being aro myself LMAO. Like, constantly going off and leaving their friends or whatever “side” they’re apart of that’s opposing the other, and having everyone wonder why they’re suddenly disappearing so much AUGH. Yea I’m just a huge sucker for forbidden love, and them being terrified of getting caught, but almost wanting to be anyway just for the sake of defiance. AND IF/WHEN THEY DO GET CAUGHT. Scar and Grian are both 100% the type to be willing to protect the other from backlash at the cost of their own life IF YA KNOW WHAT I MEAN. The real cherries on top are if one or both of them die trying to keep the other safe from their respective sides ;w; I mean tbf what’s a Romeo and Juliet-esque trope if they aren’t found embracing each other in death?
AYOOO HELLO I AM LOOKING AT THIS.... also anon dw there is never any pressure to come off anon here if you dont want to!! i have social anxiety too so i completely get it<3 If you want, you can always sign off on your anons with an emoji or some other identifier, but you absolutely do not have to
anyway GODS MY HEART.... tma boiled me into a tragedy enjoyer back in 2021 so i am staring at this like 👁️👁️ im so ill over them.... the secret gestures, the clandestine meetings, the justified fear of discovery and the DEFIANCE.... you could go so many routes with this too in an au. HEP and the Mycelium Resistance. Tumble Town and Hermitopia. The King's Court and the People's Resistance (take 2 electric boogaloo). Okay typing these out by name is a bit funnier than intended but YOU GET THE PICTURE. Now im brainrotting.
Do you think they wear secret tokens of each other's affections. Do you think they hold them close at night and hope to every god they can think of that one day they'll be happy. Do you think they take one last deliberate breath as they hold it close and die. Anon im RATTLING YOU /AFF this is amazing

Sending this out to some of my favorite writers on here: What kind of books do you like to read? Any specific authors you enjoy and who inspire you? Feel free to go wild.
Ohhh this is an excellent question! And thank you so much, @djmorn 👉👈🥺 ❤️❤️❤️
Before I begin, two things. One, I have really little brain juice and even less time for immersing myself in books as I used to let's say a decade ago. Two, I have always been more of a non-fiction enjoyer BUT I will try to list some of my favourite works.
Starting with fiction, from the top of my head I can think of:
I have been known to be a huge fan of the Bronte sisters and Oscar Wilde (especially his plays).
La Regenta by Leopoldo Alas Clarín.
The House of Mirth by Edith Warthon.
For theater, my go to is Lope de Vega's plays and also classical Greek tragedies - Euripides, Sophocles...
When I was a teen I had a gothic slash romantic phase so asdfadfa you bet I read Poe, Le Fanu, Shelley (both Mary and Percy Bysshe), Keats, Algernoon Blackwood, Robert W. Chambers, Guy de Maupassant, Arthur Machen and a long etc (yk the vibe). Feels like a lifetime ago for me tho.
Love the Spanish Romancero (romances, ballads and epic poetry corpus) and general Siglo de Oro works (literature from the Spanish golden age but ughhh so much to get into, so little time).
Also for poetry Yeats. Yea. Long time no read as well. Your ask made me think about him again.
For more contemporary stuff, first thing that comes to mind is Strange weather in Tokyo by Hiromi Kawakami.
For non-fiction, I'm a serial bringer of randomness. From Mircea Eliade's works to Marvin Harris, I've read Freud and Jung for the funsies, Safranski, Locke, Rousseau, Camus, Spninoza, Nuccio Ordine, books on mythology and specific parts of history whose authors I'm afraid don't remember (ughhh so much to read in the history, historical fiction and biographies department still XD), Ortega y Gasset and was the target of (friendly) sass about it, mystical works by Saint Teresa of Ávila and of course shitload of Philosophy of Law (call it professional deformation) but especially my beloved Hans Kelsen. Ah. Just thinking about him makes me want to go and grab one of his books from my shelves right meow.

I'm late to the party because I've had no internet for a couple of months and now it's finally back so I've just watched all the episodes I missed, and I somehow forgot how much I love these people.
I should say though, I was not sure what I was going to think about MF because even though I enjoyed bfu tc at the time because of the dynamic, I'm not huge on true crime. BUT after watching all the mf eps+debrief I have to say I LOVE this choice they made because in fact they didn't just copy it and instead they made the best possible choice they could by focusing on interesting, usually fun and mostly victimless (rip the livestock in the chupacabra ep) mysteries and I'm so happy they did that!!!! Like they could've gone the same route again and it would've probably been ok but they decided to choose something more lighthearted and within their vibe (+kinda more ethical imo) and it's perfect!!!!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰 10/10 no notes
And most importantly :) FUCK RON DESANTIS
ahh so glad to have you back anon <33
and i FULLY agree w you !! i love that they’ve given themselves a much broader spectrum of potential topics w this show as opposed to the very narrow one they had w bfutc. i’m so glad they’re gonna keep topics lighter too! it’s already making eps more fun and enjoyable since they’re not discussing real people’s real tragedies while peppering in respectful jokes - which i believe they were always really good about but still it’s nice they won’t have to toe that line anymore.
i absolutely adored this season and can’t wait for more!

REPOST NOT REBLOG
Name / Alias: Tanya
Are you over 18? Yes / No
Is your muse(s) over 18? Yes / No / Depends on the verse
blog established? I established Anakin on my multi in June 2022, and I think we moved in October of 2022, or so.
– W R I T I N G –
Are you selective about who you write with? No (anyone) / Semi (most people) / Yes (some people) / Highly (few people) / Private (mutuals only).
I always say, if it's mutuals or not. Sometimes, I'm super busy and can only do mutuals, because of time. Homework consumes most of my time, of late.
Are you selective about who you follow? No (anyone) / Semi (most people) / Yes (some people) / Highly (few people).
I follow on Anakin for not only Anakin, but my multi @crowsandmurder and my other two sideblogs @aelfred and @louisleroisoleil. I don't really follow personals, but I follow stuff related to any of them, oh and Anthony Rizzo.
If your muse is canon, how much do you adhere to canon? Not at all / A little / Some / Mostly / Strictly / Not Applicable.
Unless it's something specific, I have with someone like a ship, I am VERY canon based. I despise AU's where Anakin doesn't fall, because it was all supposed to happen and taking the tragedy out of it, is a complete disservice. Is it sad? Sure. But, it's even sadder to do a disservice to it. I do have a shirtless Vader verse, so I will do some canon divergence, but I am picky with AU's. There are ways to have other things that happened not happen, and him still fall. When people expect me to adapt to fix-its, it can make me lose motivation for days at a time. Going on 5 days now.
What post lengths do you write? One-Liners / Single-Para / Multi-Para / Novella / All of the aforementioned.
Lengthier on Tumblr. I occasionally do one paragraph, but for the most part, I am shorter on Discord and longer on Tumblr.
Do you use icons and/or GIFS? No / Gifs / Icons / Yes / Sometimes.
I have tons of icons, I don't mind small to medium gifs. I can go iconless.
Do you write on other platforms? No / Yes
Discord, mutuals are welcomed to ask for it <;3
What level of plots do you write? Unplotted / Open-Ended Plots / Semi-Plotted / Fully Plotted Epics / All of the aforementioned
I have a huge preference for plotted stuff. Knowing the course of events and my partner’s muse makes things a lot easier for me, and overall it is a lot more enjoyable to me. I am not a big fan of winging things.
How quickly do you usually respond to threads? Very Slow (more than a month) / Slow (3-4 weeks) / Average (1-2 weeks) / Fast (less than one week) / Very Fast (less than three days)
What types of themes do you like? Adventure / Romance / Fluff / ANGST / Violence / Tragedy / Domestic / Family / All of the aforementioned
I'm fickle about fluff. I don't love it in general, although I have ships on my multi that do have a lot of it. I don't mind it mixed in with an angst thing. But, it's not my favorite.
WHAT GENRES DO YOU LIKE? ( Feel free to add! ) High Fantasy / Supernatural / Science Fiction / Historical / Horror / Comedy / Romantic / Drama / Action / Smut / Adventure / Espionage / All of the aforementioned
Are there any themes you’re uncomfortable writing on your blog? (Not triggers) No / Yes / Sometimes
I will not write Anakin/Obi-Wan as a ship, no matter what. Also, any AU in which, Vader is the consulate and Padme is the Empress, because it doesn't make sense. Vader would be the Emperor. Just, most flat out AU's.
Do you have any triggers? How do you request it tagged?
Do asshole Yankee fans who don't understand when a player has a slump count?
I don't really have any. I believe we create our own safe environment. Some ships are triggering lol. But, I use the resources tumblr gives us.
– S H I P P I N G –
What types of relationships are you open to?
Romantic / Platonic / Familial / All of the aforementioned
Family is a up in the air thing. I only accept Luke and Leia as his children. There is one NPC child that he has with someone, but I'm not open to anyone else, and the father thing doesn't work, nor sibling.
What types of pre-established relationships are you open to? Romantic / Platonic / Familial / All of the aforementioned
See the answer above. So long as we have managed to come up with something that works well for both muses, it’s all good for me.
Do you have OTPs? No / Chemistry Only / Yes
I do, yes! It becomes pretty evident pretty quickly.
Do you have NOTPS? No / Yes
Obikin, Obianidala, anyone who would be abusing Anakin, like Palpatine did.
What is your muse’s sexual orientation? Heterosexual / Heteroflexible / Bisexual / Pansexual / Homoflexible / Homosexual / Demisexual / Sapiosexual / Asexual / Still trying to figure it out / Heterorexual.
What is your muse’s romantic orientation? Heteroromantic / Heteroflexible / Biromantic / Homoflexible / Homoromantic / Panromantic / Demiromantic / Sapioromantic / Aromantic / Still trying to figure it out /
Are you comfortable writing smut? No / Selectively / Yes
How early in a relationship do you ship romantically? Autoship / During plotting / After a couple IC interactions / Several IC interactions / Slow burn / Chemistry dependent / Never
Man it just happens.
Are you open to toxic ships? No / Selectively / Yes / I am not sure
Are you open to problematic ships?
No / Selectively / Yes / I am not sure
Yes, but what's really problematic, honestly? Is something problematic because X says it is? Decide for yourself. Don't be a sheep.
Are you open to polyshipping? No / Selectively / Yes / I am not sure
It's not me that's not open to it. It's him. He could never handle it. People would die.
Are you an exclusive shipper? Never / Sometimes / Yes / I would be open to discuss it
I only have I think one person that I couldn't picture Anakin or more so Vader ever shipping with another version of their character.
Does crack shipping ever happen? Nope / Yes / depends / although they gradually become normal ships

– W R I T I N G –
Are you selective about who you write with? No (anyone) / Semi (most people) / Yes (some people) / Highly (few people) / Private (mutuals only).
Life gets busy for me, I tend to also feel overwhelmed easily so I’d rather keep my circle small so I can provide everyone with a good RPing experience!
Are you selective about who you follow? No (anyone) / Semi (most people) / Yes (some people) / Highly (few people).
If your muse is canon, how much do you adhere to canon? Not at all / A little / Some / Mostly / Strictly / Not Applicable.
Star wars’ lore is MASSIVE... As a result, I try to learn more about it through bits and pieces, I choose what I feel like will work best for my interpretations then fill in the gaps however I feel like. Pokemon's lore is very chill, easy to digest and fun to play around with! Even if there isn't much for many characters, but I still try to stick with the timeline of events that most fans agrees with. Saint Seiya's lore is what I'm currently learning more about! So far, it's kinda of chill like Pokemon's but it is fun to think of, like it is with SW's.
What post lengths do you write? One-Liners / Single-Para / Multi-Para / Novella / All of the aforementioned.
One-liners are only for crack/dash shenanigans. Shorter responses work best for Discord RPs. But on tumblr, I have a huge preference for lengthier threads.
Do you use icons and/or GIFS? No / Gifs / Icons / Yes / Sometimes.
I used to love using icons, I had tons of fun with both iconing and making borders for them. BUT I've dropped them in favor of banners. ATP I got too many muses, and it'd drive me MAD to make them for each one of them. My banners are meant to fill in the void left by icons, and this way it challenges me to put more effort on my writing.
How quickly do you usually respond to threads? Very Slow (more than a month) / Slow (3-4 weeks) / Average (1-2 weeks) / Fast (less than one week) / Very Fast (less than three days)
It depends on the kind of thread & the size of it TBH. Usually speaking, I'm fast to get to RP responses, but I rely on my queue to deliver them. It helps me to space out RP responses, and manage the numbers of RP threads I have going. I can't stress enough how this method helps me SO MUCH, to prevent any form of burnouts. It may seem like I tend to respond faster to Discord rps, simply because the threads there tend to be shorter in size. But it is mainly due to the fact, there isn’t a queue system.
What types of themes do you like? Adventure / Romance / Fluff / ANGST / Violence / Tragedy / Domestic / Family / All of the aforementioned
Gore can leave me feeling ill, graphic descriptions of injuries/blood/etc can cause me to feel nauseous. Overall it is something, I'd rather avoid reading altogether. I'm also uncomfortable writing adult/minor and incestuous relationships.
Do you have any triggers? How do you request it tagged?
I have no triggers! But I would like that my mutuals tagged anything related to current world events/politics. I get how heated these subjects are to many people. However, I’m not an American, when I’m on my RP blogs I don’t want to see those things. Trust me, if I wanted to know more about it, I'd search for reputable sources of information. And not random blogs, that could be spreading misinformation or fear mongering, uninformed people. No one benefits from these types of situations. I've been in the RPC for many years, and this shit shouldn't be seen an acceptable way to behave online. Spoiler alert: You're not a grand savior, just bc you reblogged a post that had something to do, with whatever may be happening. Not everyone on Tumblr is from the US.
– S H I P P I N G –
What types of relationships are you open to?
Romantic / Platonic / Familial / All of the aforementioned
It all depends on the chemistry, and IC development. I’m extremely picky about platonic/familial relationships, due to having some really awful experiences with it in the past.
What types of pre-established relationships are you open to? Romantic / Platonic / Familial / All of the aforementioned
See the answer above. So long as we have managed to come up with something that works well for both muses, it’s all good for me.
Do you have OTPs? No / Chemistry Only / Yes
I do! My ship bias lists can be found on my muses about docs/pages!
Do you have NOTPS? No / Yes
They can be found on my muses about sections/docs as "ships I refuse to romantically write". These can range either for my own comfort, to me straight up not liking them.
What is your muse’s sexual orientation? Heterosexual / Heteroflexible / Bisexual / Pansexual / Homoflexible / Homosexual / Demisexual / Sapiosexual / Asexual / Still trying to figure it out / Depends on the muse you’re asking
See their infos
What is your muse’s romantic orientation? Heteroromantic / Heteroflexible / Biromantic / Homoflexible / Homoromantic / Panromantic / Demiromantic / Sapioromantic / Aromantic / Still trying to figure it out / Depends on the muse you’re asking
See their infos
Are you comfortable writing smut? No / Selectively / Yes
I have a NSFW side blog just for that, even though I haven’t used it in ages LMAO. I just have been preferring to write NSFW stuff on discord lately. With that said though, not all of my muses are open for it.
How early in a relationship do you ship romantically? Autoship / During plotting / After a couple IC interactions / Several IC interactions / Slow burn / Plot dependent / Never
Man it just happens.
Are you open to toxic ships? No / Selectively / Yes / I am not sure
With that said, I’m selective about who I’d write such subject. I personally, prefer doing this by myself. I’m not opposed to writing it with others, I just want to make sure nothing will be romanticized during the plotting/writing of such relationship. And due to a few bad apples in the past, I’ve become wary of giving others a shot at this.
Are you open to problematic ships?
No / Selectively / Yes / I am not sure
Bruh, anything can be considered problematic in this day & age, let's go grab some juice instead. I have ships where, a good chunk of their respective fandoms have labelled them as "problematic". But then when you look at my writing, I'm not writing the "problematic" things the fandom claims them to be as. In the end of the day, my followers and mutuals are highly encourged to curate their stay. This includes, blacklisting to their hearts' content. I feel like we as online fandoms have devolved so much, to a point you will likely find a mfer claiming how shipping in itself is problematic. As well as how you must be ashamed, to enjoy pairing fictional characters in general. Anyway hit me with whatever you want, and I’ll be the judge of what I want to write or not.
Are you open to polyshipping? No / Selectively / Yes / I am not sure
It depends on the muse you’re asking for. This is something that's more dependent on IC reasons, than OOC ones. Many of my muses wouldn't approve or be open, for a relationship like that.
Are you an exclusive shipper? Never / Sometimes / Yes / I would be open to discuss it
No, absolutely not. I’ve never had any luck with exclusivity, and after many failed attempts. i’ve come to the conclusion, it just isn’t for me.
Does crack shipping ever happen? Nope / Yes / depends / altho they gradually become normal ships
Stares @ all of my ships and sweats.

it's my duty as your house of anubis mutual to ask you about patricia and eddie (for the ship bingo)
BLESS YOU BELOVED MUTUAL if i can rely on anything in this world. it's this <3
Tumblr media
FIRST ACTUAL BINGO BABEY (and arguably there are more squares that depending on what i'm doing with them i could say are true that would make at least one more bingo but i reigned myself in a bit LOL)
peddie is so flexible in vibes?? i love that you can take their relationship in multiple different directions and it's still totally legit/within their range because there really is That Much to do with them (depending on the level of tragedy you want to milk out of them/what point in the show you're talking about/how much you want a happy ending for them) while it still feeling like their very specific brand/within their characterization
in my view (and this may be unpopular? idk) the only thing keeping them together by the end of the show is sheer force of will to not let go of their relationship because its just. A Thing They Need To Keep Doing. even if it hurts. literally everything around them (not just the plot tho that is too lol) is a huge neon sign saying BREAK UP PLEASE GOD. now dont get me wrong they absolutely are compatible, but there's so much about them that isn't re: small things that get in the way that become big things, sometimes incidental/situational and sometimes genuine incompatibilities, that they have to put a LOT of effort in to keep from flying apart by default. that's not a diss/not me saying i don't like them together -- tbh two people that are that devoted despite The Agonies is fascinating esp in the context of season 3b -- but more that they're SOOOO flexible narratively/thematically as a dramatic pairing and i love them for it + they are one of the few ships i genuinely enjoy breaking up/getting back together/breaking up/getting back together ad infinitum in my imagination LOL
definitely unpopular opinion is i don't see them working as a long term couple post-show? (or at the very least they break up For Realz/get different partners/maybe get back together later in life but as far as they know at that point they're done) like ok i enjoy the fics ive read + headcanons that keep them together A LOT but in my heart of hearts...my peddie breaks up dramatically, makes up after a lengthy period of Not Talking and causing hijinks and shenanigans for those around them, and then become the type of incredibly close friends you can only be if you have a very overdramatic romantic past LOL like new partners need to be "approved by [patricia/eddie]" "who is that? your sibling? "ew no of course not. it's my ex" "?????"
expanding on that: i don't really have a "preferred ship" to replace them with (i know i have specific non-peddie ships for them lined up in my fic but those are for the circumstances of That Fic specifically and not necessarily my ideal pairings for them) all i know is i like them when they're messy because they're sooooo good when they finally get catharsis (esp when it's not in the way they're expecting as two people who expect the worst from life and preemptively react accordingly, thus reinforcing the bad things they expect more often than not)
the irony of that is i kind of find it tedious sometimes in the actual show when they're being messy and enjoy their functional romance scenes the most but tbh it's mostly because they get stuck in cycles of being the same type of messy ('explainable misunderstanding #9387982734' i'm looking at you. Sorry) the toxicity is at its best when it's Fresh
inherent eroticism of attempted murder being ? is for 3b but the more i think about it the more i wish i had just full-on colored it in because it really is them even when there isn't possession involved actually LMAO
cursed thing i realized: this may be one of the very few totally legit enemies to lovers ships ive actively gotten into and written content for. i'm usually a friends to lovers pining and yearning enjoyer (if that wasn't obvious already) or, if there's antagonism there, prefers rivals to lovers but peddie....peddie hits
anyway closing thoughts they are highly entertaining and of all of the hoa ships i've spent a significant amount of time thinking about/writing for, probably the most versatile/fun to do things with and have the widest range/mileage? not a ship to be comforted with but a ship to challenge me creatively LOL especially since outside of hoa, if i have strong feelings on ships in a given fandom, i tend to get very. rigid and picky with what ships i like/what i don't (ie. i like despite the horrors of Having Conflict in the Narrative for my ships to have happy endings and tend to avoid ones that have fundamental incompatibilities that would most likely result in a breakup) and peddie is what i have to thank for Opening My Mind to that tbh

No (anyone) / Semi (most people) / Yes (some people) / Highly (few people).
If your muse is canon, how much do you adhere to canon?
Not at all / A little / Some / Mostly / Strictly / Not Applicable. (I try to fill in parts, where the canon left it very vague or open to interpretation really. I also follow the anime’s take on the series, so keep that in mind.)

No / Yes (discord)
What level of plots do you write?
Unplotted / Open-Ended Plots / Semi-Plotted / Fully Plotted Epics / All of the aforementioned (I have a huge preference for plotted stuff. Knowing the course of events and my partner’s muse makes things a lot easier for me, and overall it is a lot more enjoyable.)
How quickly do you usually respond to threads?
Very Slow (more than a month) / Slow (3-4 weeks) / Average (1-2 weeks) / Fast (less than one week) / Very Fast (less than three days) (It depends on the kind of thread & the size of it TBH)

Are there any themes you’re uncomfortable writing on your blog? (Not triggers)
No / Yes / Sometimes ( Gore can leave me feeling ill, it’s a grey area to me- sometimes I feel sick while reading certain descriptions, but others I dion’t mind it... Go figure. I’m also not against delving into darker/taboo themes for plots, however I’m careful about who to talk about these things. I only do them with those close to me & I know I can trust on. I refuse to romanticize any of those subjects & I know that won’t happen with those partners. )
Do you have any triggers? How do you request it tagged?
I have no triggers! But I ask for my mutuals to tag anything related to politics/IRL stuff, Sorry not sorry. I don’t think that a RP blog is the best place for these things IMO. Keep it to your personal or a blog specifically meant for those things. I come here to relax.
LAbel & call me all sorts of names. But I think there are better places & the right time to talk about these serious subjects. I will unfollow, if I feel like my dash is being spammed about these things. It’s nothing against the person, it’s just that I’m not interested in seeing stuff about it around here.
– S H I P P I N G –
What types of relationships are you open to?

Romantic / Platonic / Familial / All of the aforementioned (so long as we have managed to come up with something that works well for both muses)

Kaiba: Homoromantic, although he is unable to fall in love with anyone. Set and Atem: Biromantic, with no clear preference.
Are you comfortable writing smut?
No / Selectively / Yes (But I’m very selective when it comes to Atem, I just feel like I’d rather keep that only to plotted shipping AUs)
How early in a relationship do you ship romantically?
Autoship / During plotting / After a couple IC interactions / Several IC interactions / Slow burn / Plot dependent / Never (Man it just happens)
Are you open to toxic ships?
No / Selectively / Yes / I am not sure (I’m very selective about who I’d write such subject. I personally, prefer doing this by myself. I’m not opposed to writing it with others, I just want to make sure nothing will be romanticized during the plotting/writing of such relationship. And due to a few bad apples in the past, I’ve become wary of giving others a shot at this.)
Are you open to problematic ships?
No / Selectively / Yes / I am not sure (Aside from the ones mentioned above, and some obvious stuff that I won’t write [namely pedophilia, incest (outside of the AE context), etc]. I’m open to pretty much anything, ofc depending on the ship I’d rather keep it to discord.)
Are you open to polyshipping?
No / Selectively / Yes / I am not sure (Most of my muses aren’t open to such thing though, but I’d be more than glad to give it a shot <3)
Are you an exclusive shipper?
Never / Sometimes / Yes / I would be open to discuss it (Nah man, I’ve tried it a few times but it just ain’t for me.)
Does crack shipping ever happen?
Nope / Yes / depends / altho they normally become normal ships (Stares @ my ships from other blogs)

Round-Up:l Historical Fiction I’ve read in the past 6 months or so…
I wanted to do a round-up, I don’t think I’ve told people here but I got a job last December where I work from 3pm to 11pm as a data processor and I’m not allowed to have my phone or anything on me but an mp3 player. So I’ve been listening to audible books after audible books. So today I’ve going to give you a short round-up of the books I’ve listened to.
Becoming Marie Antoinette by Juliet Grey:
This book centers on the Young Marie Antoinette, through her childhood to her accession to the French Throne. It’s a rather good take on the character of Marie Antoinette, they show how underprepared she was for life at the French Court. How different the Austrian Court was. They showed how Maria Theresa had to fight battle after battle to ensure the alliance took place. The marriage of Louis and Marie was so well done. The author really took her time to slowly build the relationship up and highlight how deep there love for each other became. This book was actually perfect for a historical fiction novel, stuck to the facts, very well researched about the era and had interesting characters. The only issue I had is a series but the rest of the series isn’t available in audiobook format. I hope one day the other two books get narrated and I can listen to them.
The Romanov Empress by C. W. Gortner:
This book centers on Tsarina Maria “Minnie” Feodorovna (mother of Nicholas II), it starts with her sisters in the engagement of the future Edward VII and to WWI and the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. The book closes out on Minnie and her remaining children fleeing to Great Britain.
Now this book was very conflicting for me. The problem I had with this book was the characterization of Alexandra Feodorovna (Nicholas II’s wife). It seems Gortner is of the opinion that Alexandra caused the downfall of the Romanov’s, which frankly just isn’t true. The problem for me is, it could be Gortner doesn’t actually believe this, historically Minnie and Alexandra didn’t get along, the book is written from Minnie’s POV. So it’s natural that there is a lot Alexandra hate, but it also seemed over the top. The book blames Alexandra for Nicholas for celebrating after the Khodynka Tragedy (which literally ensured his poor reputation amongst the people). However, everything I’ve read on the topic indicates it was Nicholas’ uncles that insisted the parties continue. To blame Alexandra for every action Nicholas took is just incredibly unfair and simply not true. Alexandra certainly wasn’t a victim but we really need to let Nicholas II stand on his own. If you’re interested the History of Russian Rulers did amazing podcast episodes on Nicholas and really showed how his own actions led to his demise. Now the positives of this book are it really highlights Minnie’s relationship with her sister Alexandra of Denmark (who was the wife of Edward VII). It also shows how interconnected all the families of the first WWI was. The characterization of Alexander III is spot on, and the love between him and Minnie is incredibly believable. I also loved Alexander II in this book (his good and bad sides). Minnie’s relationship with her sister in law Maria of Mecklenburgh adds spice to the book. They were true frenemies. The book does a great job of taking you back to the late 1800s and into the last hours of Imperial Russia. They also highlight the danger the last Romanovs were truly in and how naïve they were to the challenges they were facing. It also showed how Minnie and Alexander’s parenting came back to bit them. Minnie seems to just face conflict after conflict with all of her children. But it’s also heartbreaking to read her reaction to her sons (not just Nicholas but also her son Michael) and grandchildren were murdered. Not to mention the other children she lost (to illness). Also the death of Alexander III was touching. If you’re interesting in Russian history I would give this a go, but take the Alexandra stuff with a huge grain of salt.
The Queens Vows by C. W. Gortner:
This book centers on Isabel of Castile, going from her childhood to events of 1492. Now I’m going to say this if you’re interested in Gortner as an author you should read this book. Out of the three books I’ve read by him this is the one I believe is most worth your time. His exploration into the character of Isabel is near perfect. While he does have a few inaccuracies (which he mentions at the end of the book) they only add to the story. This book was really able to capture the 1400s for me in a way no other book has to date.
The marriage between Isabel and Ferdinand in this book is extremely well done. You get to see how much they love each other and how troubled the marriage could be. I truly enjoyed the characterization of her brother Henry IV. The weaknesses he had and the struggle between him and Isabel. If you enjoyed the Isabel TV Series this would be a great add on. It’s not exactly the same (Gortner makes it near certain that Isabel’s niece is illegitimate unlike the show) but it’s a perfect add on if you have been craving more since the show ended. I think Gortner handled the Jewish expulsion of 1492 very well. He notes in the back we really don’t know what went through Isabel’s head during that decision, he chose to take one version of it. He also notes how incredibly powerful the idea of damnation was, and that even if Isabel had no personal issues with Jewish people in her realm the overwhelming religious pressure cannot be denied. I agree with him on this point, and while it’s easy for us (in the 21st century) laugh off the idea of damnation in 1492 it was a part of there reality.
The Vatican Princess by C. W. Gortner:
This follows the life of Lucrezia Borgia from the start of her father’s succession to the papacy to her entering her marriage with Alfonso d’Este. This one by Gortner was my least favorite. Like the other two, it was incredibly well researched and it does a great job pulling you back. However, I personally didn’t like the characterizations or the route he chose at times. I’m going to give spoilers for the book FYI so scroll past if you don’t want to know. He took the route of victim Lucrezia, which doesn’t appeal to me very much. Also he had Vannozza dei Cattanei hate her daughter for steal the attention of Rodrigo, it has Giovanni Sforza be an abusive ass who sexually assaults her, it has Rodrigo sending Giulia to sleep with Giovanni Sforza to keep him off Lucrezia (And sleep with Juan as well for some reason), it has her brother Juan rape and impregnate her and he does this because he’s upset Cesare killed his lover Prince Cem and wants to hurt Cesare, has Rodrigo grow to despise Lucrezia for Cesare murdering Juan, Rodrigo allows Cesare to murder Alfonso of Aragon to hurt Lucrezia like he was hurt by Juan’s death, oh also Cesare doesn’t murder Juan for the rape itself it’s more about Juan getting to have Lucrezia “first”, it also has Vannozza upset with Lucrezia for Juan raping her as well, and has Lucrezia end up despising Cesare after the murder of Alfonso of Aragon.
Now I’m not a Borgia expert by any means but the book seems to just be filled with nonsense to me. The only good parts of this book were Sancha of Aragon and Lucrezia’s friendship (WHICH BOTH TV SERIES DENIED ME OF) and Giulia Farnese massively calling out Rodrigo for basically pimping her out. While I find the latter inaccurate it was enjoyable to read Giulia talk about how Rodrigo took her when she was barely more than a child and ruined her. Personally, I’d skip this book it’s really not worth it.
The Accidental Empress and Sisi Empress on Her Own by Allison Pataki:
This follows the life of Empress Sisi of Austria-Hungary from her childhood to her assassination.
This is a series but the two books were read by different people so it didn’t feel like to me. I think all series should have to be read by the same person. To sum it up, the first book is interesting and the second book is a dud.
The first book I enjoyed so much, it follows Sisi from her childhood to the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. It follows her disasters marriage with Emperor Franz Joseph at the age of 15, her struggles with her mother in law, her struggles with postpartum depression, and her romance with the Hungarian Count Andrassy. The first book really makes you feel bad for Sisi, she struggles with a rather cold abusive man who claims to love her (but only really loves her image not her) and her struggle for freedom in the Austrian Court. Sisi is more or less pushed out of Franz Joseph and her children’s life. Franz replaces her with mistresses and her mother in law takes over the role of mother to her children. The book ends on a clear high note (Sisi gaining Hungary proper status in the Empire) and honestly the author should have left it there.
The second book is set after the birth of her final child Valerie (the only child she’s allowed to raise) and to her assassination. The book was a drag, I personally didn’t like the narrator and it took me forever to finish the book. The book makes Sisi incredibly unlikable, it makes it seem more like she abandoned her husband and family rather than being pushed out. The book opens up with Sisi having the opportunity to oversee Crown Prince Rudolf’s (And to have more involvement in his upbringing) but would rather go to Britain to ride horses. She basically is framed as being responsible for his tragedy. The author also ruins the love story she had set up between Andrassy and Sisi (which I had adored in the previous book). Now I understand you have to keep with history but you can’t set up a massive love story in the first book and they tear it down a few chapters in by the second book. The whole second book was a massive let down, I’d reread the first one but not the second one.
The Summer Queen, The Winter Crown, The Autumn Throne, by Elizabeth Chadwick: This book series centers on Eleanor of Aquitaine from childhood to death.
This series was by far one of my favorite reads of 2019. You should really believe the hype about this series, it truly is that good. Now the books span a massive amount of time so I can’t go into everything but it was 1000% worth reading. The books explore the early Medieval World incredibly well. The author takes a highly realistic approach to Eleanor (who at the end of her first novel claims wasn’t a woman ahead of her time but rather a woman of her time) with a few dramatizations. This book series should be picked up for a TV series on Starz, HBO, or Showtime. It has all the material you need to make an epic TV series. I highly enjoyed the exploration of her marriages to both Louis VIII of France and Henry II of England. How different and yet strikingly similar the relationships were. The only slight issue I have is the author does tend to go the route of King John evil, King Richard I good. Which I personally don’t believe is true. However, they do a great job showing that even though Richard is Eleanor’s favorite she does love John. Again the books take a highly realistic approach to Eleanor so the author more or less stays away from all the rumors about her (with the expectation of one which I find to add more to the series rather than take away). This is a must-read series, and I can only hope Elizabeth Chadwick will write more series like this. I also hope one day a TV network picks up the novels to adapt.
House of Rejoicing (Part 1), Storm in the Sky (Part 2), Eater of Hearts (Part 3) (The Book of Coming Forth by Day Series) by Libbie Hawker: These books have multiple points of view (GRRM style) set in Ancient Egypt during the Amarna Era. Starting at the end of Amenhotep III and to the death of King Tut. The POVs range from Kiya, Nefertiti, Tiye, Sitamun, Beketaten, Horemheb, Meritaten, and Ankhesenpaaten (I might have missed some but idk). This series is not for the light of heart, the books include rape, incest, pedophilia, violence against women, etc. I mean this book series is just a lot to take in. The author goes down the route that Akhenaten was an abusive pedophile screwing every barely 13-year-old girl he could get his hands on (his daughters, sisters, sister in law etc). The concept of this series was excellent. A multi-narrative series set in Ancient Egypt, however, the series just misses the mark. I feel like Hawker wanted this to be the ASOIAF of Ancient Egypt novels but couldn’t commit. One of the biggest writing issues I had with this was how short the books were for A. the number of POVs we had, and B. for the span of time we went through. I think this series would have benefited from more books and longer novels. The author also tries to dive into the misogyny and how it affected women. However again she just misses the mark somehow. I could see what she was attempting but it just never got there if you know what I mean. I think this series feels more a draft than a finished product. Also, the plot is a jumbled mess. Now it’s Ancient Egypt you can really do anything (especially with the Amarna era) but this series was so out there… and I’ve read Philippa Gregory. Some of the things that happened nearly had me bursting out laughing at work. I really can’t get into all craziness of this series but it’s a lot just trust me. Like I said Akhenaten is a pedophile (actually a lot of the men were) in this book, which idk I don’t feel comfortable with how all of the problematic stuff was handled. The first book was the best book of the series and the last two are really where the craziness begins. But truly I would skip this series unless you up for hours of nonsense and craziness.

Note
when did you first get into berserk? what made you fall in love with griffith, guts and their relationship/dynamic? (btw i love this blog. it's a gem admist the rubble that is the berserk fandom. keep up the good work ❤)
Thank you, that’s awesome to hear!
Well I watched the anime with a friend and then read a scanlation several years ago, and I enjoyed it and casually shipped griffguts but I didn’t really get super into it back then, probably because the scanlation was hard to follow and often confusing, and I never ended up rewatching the anime despite being tempted bc the rape and attempted rape scenes put me off too much to dive back into it.
Then a couple years ago I got into a conversation about Berserk w/ someone and found out Guts and co finally got off the boat so I was like, hey maybe I should re-read it and catch up. So I found the dark horse translation and just fell completely head over heels for it lol.
And I think I got so into it bc of the double whammy of how well Guts, Griffith, and griffguts hits so many of my favourite ship and character tropes, and how thoroughly the story is about their relationship, and how it’s actively enriched by reading their relationship as mutual pining and repressed attraction lol. Like, it legit fits everything perfectly and makes the story more coherent and thematically rich.
So like, on a personal level, everything griffguts is just enjoyable to me. I love how Guts reads like Miura’s attempt to take an over the top action antihero archetype and actually delve into what would make a dude that fucked up. I love the way the Black Swordsman arc subverts expectations that way - you expect a big action climax when Guts encounters the dude he wants revenge on, and instead he’s physically helpless at the time and can’t do much of anything except lie on the ground listening to a story that parallels his own backstory lol, the climax is actually fueled by emotional revelations about his former relationship with the dude he wants revenge on, and then we segue into the Golden Age and learn all about Guts’ traumatic childhood and why he has giant issues around being traded away by someone he loves, as well as why he’s irrationally driven to fight strong opponents.
Like I’m admittedly just a sucker for big tough scary badass is still basically a scared abused attention starved kid deep down.
And Griffith is just my ideal character. Like start off with one of my favourite character types of calm, collected, competent dude who is a huge mess of issues behind that veneer, and then add about 50 more things I adore, like his narrative of being torn between his love for another dude and the thing he built his entire life around; the way he lies to himself (”I don’t feel guilty” while he’s self-harming, eg); the way his feminine beauty is emphasized both as an asset and a source of trauma; his hardcore repression; his pursuit of a utopia; the way his dream of a utopia is ultimately framed as stemming from a desire to escape from a harsh reality; his guilt and self-loathing; the emotional vulnerability that occasionally seeps through the cracks in his mask; self-destructiveness; the irony of becoming a monster because he already erroneously sees himself as one; trying to escape his feelings of love because they’re devastating and life-ruining… ok I need to stop at some point here.
And god griffguts like. The aformentioned dude being torn between the thing he values most in life and his love for another dude - fucking love that. Destroying his life because of that love. “How long ago did someone I was supposed to have in hand… instead gain such a strong hold on me” is like a summarization of my absolute favourite romance dynamic where feelings + emotional vulnerability reverses the expected power dynamic. Epic misunderstandings stemming from strong characterization - like I understand why Guts left, why he didn’t explain himself to Griffith, why Griffith threw his life away after that, why Griffith chose to sacrifice him, and it’s so satisfying because it makes perfect sense from a character standpoint. I love that kind of romantic tragedy, 2 people fucking up due to their own tragic flaws. And the potential they had - like the reason it’s a tragedy is because they could’ve been so perfect together. Guts wanted someone to look at him, someone who loved him and admired him and needed him, and that was Griffith. And Griffith wanted someone to know him, even the parts he himself hates, and love him anyway, and that was Guts.
Like they’re positioned as each others’ positive alternatives to their destructive dreams, but due to their respective issues and insecurities they end up losing that relationship in favour of pursuing those dreams. It’s perfect.
And like I mentioned, reading it as romantic pining just makes the story better. It fits into the theme of trauma getting between them and ruining their potential, it fits into the sense of lost potential for a mutually fulfilling relationship, it fits into the way the tragedy comes not from their intense feelings for each other but from their failure to define and act on them, it fits into the way the misunderstanding that separates them is literally just both dudes failing to realize their feelings for the other are mutual and returned:
Guts:
Tumblr media
Griffith:
Tumblr media
Griffith:
Tumblr media
Guts (literally remembering the exact same scene Griffith is remembering):
Tumblr media
It’s Just. So. Good. I can’t get enough of this. I’ve never read a tragic romance more satisfying than the first 2 arcs of Berserk.
Anyway thank you for giving me the opportunity to ramble at length about this lol.

Bo
This is a repost, a fic of mine you might have seen before, but I think it bears revisiting as I am rather fond of it. A friend of mine has thrown a prompt in and chosen Bo as the character to write about. So I think this is a good a time as any to share this again.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Title: Bo
A TAG Secret Santa fic
Author: Gumnut
15 – 18 Dec 2018
Fandom: Thunderbirds Are Go 2015/ Thunderbirds TOS
Rating: Teen
Summary: Virgil meets a new friend, and, damnit, Scott was going to kill him.
Word count: 6184
Spoilers & warnings: Possible bushfire/wildfire triggers in the first part. For the rest none, except for vague nudity and fluff. Christmas fic. Gen.
Timeline: Origin story
Author’s note: Okay, so this is the first time I’ve ever participated in one of these so I’m new to this.
My prompts were
1. Virgil covered in tinsel
2. Tracy family Christmas
3. Christmas Rescue Miracle (with Virg please)
The first one prompted all sorts of images not suitable for a PG audience. Hubby also suggested I blow up a tinsel factory. Overall, I did attempt to include all three prompts in the one fic. I hope I have succeeded in providing some enjoyment at least.
This does not belong to either Sotto Voce or Warm Rain and is pretty canon compliant. It is currently standalone. Consider it a possible origin story, there may be more, if I can think up some new plot lines. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
Many thanks to @tagsecretsanta for all her wonderful work putting the gift exchange together, and thanks to @photowizard17 for the inspiring prompts, @i-am-chidorixblossom for cheering me on when I couldn’t post daily and obsessively like I usually do, and to @the-lady-razorsharp for giving it an American beta so I don’t trip over being Australian (though the summer Christmas certainly helped :D).
Disclaimer: Mine? You’ve got to be kidding. Money? Don’t have any, don’t bother.

“It’s the last house at the end of the street, Virgil.”
“FAB, Thunderbird Five.” It was said without the usual spark. The grey of the destroyed landscape sucked everything from everything. A pall of smoke and haze, black remnants of lives, homes and the tragedy of the night before.
International Rescue had been called to a massive bushfire in the Yarra Ranges in Victoria, Australia. The CFA had had it under control the previous day, John keeping an eye on it anyway, but an unexpected change in wind direction in the evening had it jumping firebreaks and tearing through an unprotected valley and directly through a township.
With the vast tall forests of mountain ash, eucalypts full of volatile oil just waiting to burst into flame, combined with the hot and blustery northerly, not even IR could stop the firestorm from taking lives and property.
Thunderbird Two had her fire suppression equipment, but the massive plane was a speck against the wall of flame.
There were forces of nature that just couldn’t be stopped.
The Tracys dodged and nabbed trapped people. Thunderbird Two deployed a huge water cannon, sourcing water from the local reservoir, as the CFA water bombed around them, desperate to protect what lives they could. But nothing was stopping the fire.
It tore through the town leaving agony in its wake.
Dawn was grey and dismal, but it brought rain. The sky rumbled, threatening to spark more fires in the ranges, but the deluge came and dampened the remaining flame enough to once again get the front under control.
But it was too late for the town.
It was gone.
Virgil walked the length of the street, his exo-suit rubbing on aching shoulders. Burnt out cars and collapsed homes lined the road from one end to the other. The skeletons of black trees marched off into the distance behind it all.
Haze hovered above ash-clogged puddles in the pavement.
It wasn’t what Christmas morning was supposed to be.
The last house at the end of the street had fully collapsed in on itself. A burnt-out car sat in the driveway, its trunk lid and one of its doors open.
Virgil closed his eyes for a moment, knowing what that likely meant.
He steeled himself and walked past the remains he knew he was going to find in the car.
Nothing could be done.
Nothing.
He focussed on the whine of his suit as his boots stepped in wet ash and strode across the front yard to the remains of the house. He had to clear his throat to speak to John. “Tell me where, Thunderbird Five.”
“Possibly in the basement? The lifesign is below ground level.”
The house had been old, the wooden floorboards disintegrating in the heat. Virgil leapt through the remains of a wall, landing on rubble in what had likely been a wine cellar. The heat had been so intense, that glass bottles had become slag.
Glass crunched under his boots. “Right or left?”
“Eastern side, southern corner.”
There was a mass of rubble collapsed against the only standing wall of the building.
“This is International Rescue. Can anyone hear me?”
He turned up the pickups on his exterior mikes.
Nothing. It was probably a blip. How the hell could anything survive this holocaust?
His shoulders dropped.
But then...something? A whimper?
Maybe?
Virgil began digging.
It took him a good fifteen minutes of solid work to move enough burnt masonry to reach a hole in the wall at the very base of the structure. And in what appeared to be the bottom of a dumb waiter he found the lifesign.
The little puppy whimpered at him, trembling with fear.
Aw, hell.
“John, lifesign is a dog.”
“One moment, Thunderbird Two.” The puppy stared, the green, yellow and blue of Virgil’s suit reflected in its brown eyes. “There is no dog registered at that address. Deliver to the local authorities. You are needed to airlift some survivors to Melbourne. Report to Scott on the other side of town.”
“FAB, Thunderbird Five.”
Virgil slid his arms out from the suit and bent aching knees. “Hey, little one, do you want to come with me?”
The puppy shivered and looked him up and down, hesitating.
“I’m with International Rescue, we’re here to help.” He took a step closer. “It’s okay, I promise.”
Maybe it was something in his voice, his stance, or simply because the puppy had no choice, but as Virgil reached into the box it was sitting in, the puppy made no protest as he picked it up.
A quick examination for injury revealed her to be a girl. She shuddered up against Virgil’s chest. “Don’t worry, it’s all over, you’re safe.”
Sliding one arm back into his suit, he started making his way out of the ruined building, turning his back on the tiny hole that had somehow saved the little dog’s life.
-o-o-o-
Perhaps it was because she sat so quietly with him. Perhaps because it was Christmas Day. Most likely it was because Virgil had reached his limit of pain.
When he found the RSPCA tent, specially set up for lost pets, he gently handed over the little puppy. She let out a whimper and began crying.
No barking, just this godawful crying that tore at his heart.
“You will be fine here, little one.” The attendant was one of those kindly older ladies and she hugged the gangly bundle of fluff to her chest as Virgil turned to leave, Scott in his ear.
But the puppy let out such a scream of anguish, Virgil turned around without thinking. She was struggling in the volunteer’s arms and before either of them could react, she managed to wriggle free and dash over to him, her little body trembling on his left boot.
He reached down and gathered her into his arms. “You can’t come with me. I can’t-“ But she was rubbing her head up under his chin, little sounds in her throat.
And he couldn’t.
Just couldn’t.
His eyes met the eyes of the lady volunteer and she smiled. “We will keep her details if you would like to take her with you. If anyone contacts us, we can let you know.” And the volunteer was just as hopeful as the puppy in his arms. After all, there was no life at the RSPCA unless a home was found.
He looked down at her little brown eyes again.
No, he couldn’t.
Damnit, Scott was going to kill him.
Maybe for just a few days?
The excuse provided a simple solution, so he took it.
Without a word, he handed his IR contact details to the volunteer, and, puppy in hand, turned his back to the tent and strode towards the big green hulk parked in the distant haze.
“Well, little one, you have definitely made an interesting choice. Let me introduce you to my big green partner.”
-o-o-o-
It was well past Christmas lunch, or rather the lack of it, before IR was given the all clear to return to base. During the entire time, the little puppy sat beside Virgil’s pilot chair, apparently unfazed by the deep bass rumble of Thunderbird Two.
When he picked up both Gordon and Alan the dynamic changed just a little.
Gordon dragged himself onto the flight deck first, a groan in every step. “Christmas just gets more exciting every year.” It was true. Nine out of ten Christmas Days were side-swiped by a disaster, to the point that the Tracy Christmas tradition was a modular and movable celebration nowadays. No guarantees and no defined day. It happened around December twenty-fifth, there about, when they could, between call outs.
Suddenly the little puppy was in his lap.
“What is that?”
Virgil looked up. His brother was covered in soot and looked as tired as Virgil felt. “This is Bo.” And he had no idea where the name came from, it just seemed right and the moment clicked.
“Bo?”
“Yeah.” Newly christened Bo peered up at Gordon around Virgil’s arm. “She survived the fire.” A swallow. “Her family didn’t.”
“Oh.”
Alan, as always, had more energy than any of them, and showed it as he waltzed into the cabin. “So why aren’t we moving?”
Bo let off a sharp bark.
Everyone jumped.
“What the hell, Virgil?”
Bo was literally glaring at Alan.
“Hey, Bo, calm down, that’s just Alan. He’s annoying, but tolerable.” The little puppy looked up at him, her gorgeous brown eyes just melting him inside. He was so gone.
“Hey!” That from Alan.
“Scott’s going to kill you.” That from Gordon, who was approaching slowly.
“Yeah, I know.” It was a sigh.
Gordon crouched down beside Virgil’s chair. “Hey, little one, what gave you the idea to attach yourself to this big oaf?” Pulling off one of his gloves, the aquanaut reached out and offered the puppy his hand. She eyed him warily before tentatively sniffing at his fingers.
She sneezed.
Alan snorted.
Bo blinked and stared at Gordon for a moment. The aquanaut kept still and eventually she sniffed at him again, before nuzzling at his hand. He blatantly took that as permission and gently rubbed behind her ear. “You are a cute little thing, aren’t you.”
She licked his wrist.
“Oh, I can see why our heavy lifter fell for you. You’ve got it all in those brown eyes of yours, haven’t you.” Gordon shrugged. “Though I will admit they are the best colour for manipulation.”
“And he speaks from experience.” To Virgil’s surprise, Gordon actually jumped. “Did you forget I was here? Not absorbed by those brown eyes are we?” He couldn’t help but smile at his brother. At least one was as besotted as he had to admit he was.
Yes, Scott was definitely going to kill him.
“Shut up, Virgil.”
Bo backed off, once again hiding behind Virgil’s baldric.
“Hey, Gordon, watch the tone.”
“Sorry, Bo.”
“Are we actually going home at some point? I have a date with my bed.”
Gordon stood up, pulling out the co-pilot’s seat. “No rush, Allie, she’ll wait for you.”
“Augh.”
“Sit down, Alan, I’m just finishing pre-flight.” Tired and cranky could easily become nasty if not attended to.
Bo curled up, nestled against his harness, as Alan grumpily pulled out his seat.
“Virgil, where the hell are you?”
Speaking of tired and cranky... “Launching now, Thunderbird One.” As if prompted, he received clearance from Australian Air Control.
TB2 rumbled beneath as he activated VTOL, ash and dust swirling up around them. As soon as he had enough height, he engaged her rear thrusters and tore off over the Alps, across the coast and out into the Tasman.
“ETA fifteen minutes.” At least they weren’t too far from home.
Bo fell asleep in his lap.
-o-o-o-
Virgil was on the verge of joining Bo in slumber as Thunderbird Two spun slowly in her hanger, eventually coming to a final stop.
So tired.
Beside him, Alan poked Gordon awake. “Ugh, what? Oh.” You could almost hear his brain booting.
Virgil worked around Bo as he did his post-flight checks, his brothers, well, mostly Gordon, groaning as they got to their feet and waddled towards the hatch. “C’mon, Virg, Alan’s pining for his bed.”
“You two go ahead. I just need to finish post-flight.” He didn’t turn around, but he could feel Gordon’s eyes on him.
“Sure, whatever.” And he heard the hatch lower to the hangar floor.
His brothers gone, Virgil let himself relax back against his chair, his shoulders sagging. He let out a long breath. “So, Bo, how are we going to do this?”
The puppy woke as if on command and turned to stare up at him. Gently her tail began to wag.
Virgil let a tired smile cross his face.
Encouraged, Bo jumped up and put her two front paws on his chest, reaching up, trying to lick his face despite not quite being tall enough.
The smile became a grin.
“Okay, okay.” He wrapped his arms around her and lifted her up as he pushed his seat backwards and stood. Immediately he was bathed in puppy drool. He couldn’t help but laugh. He surfaced above her licking and cradled her in his arms. “We need to get you some food.” His stomach rumbled ominously. “We need to get me some food.”
And a shower. A shower definitely wouldn’t hurt.
If he could hold off the sleep.
If he didn’t call it a stagger, it wasn’t a stagger, but he had obviously been sitting in his seat for far too long ferrying all those survivors to Melbourne on repeated trips. It was his turn to groan as both his back and legs complained loudly at the sudden demands for movement.
Bo started chewing on his glove.
Somehow he made it back to his rooms without encountering anyone. Shutting the door, he let Bo loose on the floor and began stripping off his uniform, hitting the buttons on his preprogrammed shower cubicle. Moments later he walked under the spray and let it wash the day from his skin.
God, that felt good.
As his muscles relaxed under the heat, sleep became more and more attractive, and by the time he stumbled out of the water, all thoughts of food had vanished.
He took the three steps across his room from the ensuite and threw himself facedown on the bed, still partly wet, still naked.
He was asleep within moments.
-o-o-o-
He was being kissed.
Her lips were warm, her tongue wet, her whiskers soft against his stubble...
Uh?
She licked his eye.
Wha-?
Virgil, always slow to respond upon waking, opened said eye only to get an eyeful of slobber. A soft paw thwapped him on the cheek. Huh? he blinked attempting to clear his eyesight, a hand coming up to defend himself.
Fortunately, his brain came online and memory kicked in. “B-Bo?”
A tongue wrapped around his nose and left it wet.
Ugh.
He wiped his face with his hand, stretching backwards on his pillow, desperate to get out of reach.
The puppy landed on his chest, her paws kneading his chest hair, her little claws completing his wake-up process rather abruptly.
Oh god.
“Bo, down, honey, down.”
He was completely ignored.
Sitting up, he attempted to grab her in his arms, but missed. The little puppy landed on things that puppies had no right to land on. Or stomp on for that matter.
He winced.
“Ooh, okay, come here.” He lifted her off his lap, holding her close, her tail pummelling his belly. “I’m awake, okay.” Again he found himself pinned by her brown eyes. “Aww, c’mon with the cute, Bo, you’re going to melt my brain.”
“Assuming you have a brain to melt.” And Scott was standing in his doorway.
Virgil glared up at him. “Don’t you knock?”
“I did. Grandma sent me to tell you that Christmas dinner is ready.”
Virgil frowned at his brother over the top of Bo’s ears, ignoring the glare the blue eyes were directing at the puppy in his arms. “I thought we’d do Christmas tomorrow.”
“We don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. Grandma thought it would be best to sneak it in tonight, since it is Christmas Day, after all.” Scott’s lips thinned. “Where did you get that from?”
“She’s a rescue.”
“Usually we leave our rescues on the continent we find them.”
“She had no one.”
“Unfortunately, that is nothing new.” And one of his hands had moved to his hip.
Virgil sighed. “Scott, it’s fine, it’s only for a few days.”
“I’m going to hold you to that.”
Virgil held back his retort. He knew to pick his fights and now was not the time. “Her name is Bo.”
Scott looked at him and then at Bo. “Hurry up, your dinner is getting cold.” The ghost of a smirk. “And don’t forget to wear clothes.”
“Funny, funny, ha, ha.” But his brother had left.
Virgil let his shoulders drop. “Sorry, Bo, I think you’ve got your work cut out for you.”
Bo just licked him some more.
It wasn’t until he went looking for his boots that he discovered the wonderful deposits Bo had left for him on the floor.
Ugh.
And apparently one of his favourite boots had served as a meal also.
He closed his eyes and sighed again.
Half dressed, he cleaned up the mess, and five minutes later he waltzed downstairs, Bo in his arms and barefoot. Time to face the inevitable music.
-o-o-o-
A Tracy Christmas used to be snow, roast turkey, stockings by the fire, the occasional Christmas carol and family.
Since starting International Rescue it had changed.
Firstly, they were in the tropics. The only fires available in those temperatures were ones that required firefighting equipment. Having grown up with snow, it was still extremely weird. But it had its advantages. For one you could go outside in the minimum of clothing, something Gordon took advantage of every day of the year. There were no snowball fights, but these were fast replaced with water fights. There was no ice skating, but there was water skiing if anyone could get up the energy to get the boat out. And surfing, let’s not forget Scott’s attempts at that. Virgil would admit that he didn’t mind a little surfboard action himself. He wouldn’t say he was very good at it, but at least Gordon had never had to save him like he had Scott.
There were still Christmas trees and tinsel and stockings that no-one ever considered wearing hung from the nearest mantelpiece-looking piece of furniture.
There was still turkey and roast potatoes and all the yummy food crucial for a good Christmas meal, but it was often cooked outside in barbecue ovens and seafood and cold food had been added to the menu. In fact, the traditional dinner had become more of a banquet by the pool.
As Virgil walked out onto the patio, he couldn’t help but smile at the Christmas tree that had obviously been hurriedly moved out here from the comms room. It sat a little lopsided and the star on top was having a few issues with gravity. That was new, as was the liberal tinsel and Christmas lights strung from palm tree to palm tree, across the pool and back several times.
“Fifty bucks says Gordon tries to water volleyball the tinsel at least once.”
Virgil smirked as he stepped up beside his next youngest brother. “Not touching that one. I value my money.”
John was dressed in shorts and a t-shirt and had a beer in his hand. Bo was immediately interested in this new person. She strained towards John, her nose literally twitching towards the hand holding the beer.
His brother must have caught the movement out of the corner of his eye and instinctively took a step away.
“Oh, sorry, John, this is Bo.” Bo was climbing over his arm, desperate to get closer to the astronaut. Virgil held her tight, worried she would fall.
“Uh, hello.” John turned towards them, frowning. “Since when do you own a dog?”
“Since this morning.”
“Does Scott know?” They both instinctively looked over at their eldest brother who was hovering over one of the barbecues energetically discussing something with Grandma - probably how not to burn the food.
“He does.”
“And you still have it?”
“Her.”
“Her.”
“Yes.”
“Good luck with that one.” John drank his beer.
“She had no one else.”
John arched an eyebrow at him and then frowned. “Oh, Virgil.” His shoulders slumped.
“I am an adult now, John. It won’t be like last time.”
“God, I hope not.”
Virgil stared at his brother, only to see the genuine concern in his green eyes. A sigh. “It won’t happen again.”
John reached out and gently touched his shoulder. “No, it won’t, because you will remember that you have four brothers who are all here for you, won’t you.” God, that green gaze was penetrating.
“It will be fine.”
Bo yipped at John, her tail beating Virgil’s chest.
The astronaut smiled and offered the little dog his hand. She sniffed and licked him almost immediately.
“I think you have been approved.”
John smiled and Virgil couldn’t help but do the same.
“Virgil!” And Grandma was arrowing in on his position.
“Incoming.” John was smirking.
“Hey, Grandma.”
But his grandmother only had eyes for Bo. “Who is this?”
Virgil smiled again. “This is Bo. Bo, this is Grandma.”
Bo whacked him with her tail and literally leapt from his arms into his grandmother’s.
“Woah.” Suddenly with arms full of wriggling puppy enthusiastically licking her face, his grandmother was laughing. “Oh dear, you are a cutie. Let me have a look at you.” And she held Bo out at arms length, her eyes critical. “A little hard to tell at her age, but my bet says she’s of boxer stock, around three months old. Such a beautiful brindle and that face.” Virgil couldn’t help but agree. Bo looked like she had dipped her face in a pot of ink, her brown eyes surrounded by gorgeous black coat that quickly bled to brindle down her back with a spot of white on her front. “Where did you find her?”
Virgil looked at his feet, remembered why they were bare, and looked back up at his grandmother. “This morning’s rescue. She lost everything.”
Grandma turned her attention back to Bo. “Oh, honey. You survived the fire?” Bo licked her nose. “Well, you are safe here.” Grandma curled her arms around the puppy and scratched her ears. “Has Virgil fed you anything yet?” She glanced at him and he shrugged. He got frowned at for his trouble. Grandma turned away, walking towards the barbecues with Bo in her arms. “Let’s get you something to eat.”
Virgil rolled his eyes.
“Well, that didn’t take long, did it?” John was still smirking at him.
A series of barks and a yelp from Grandma, and suddenly Bo was dashing amongst legs in his direction. “Woah.” He crouched down and caught her as she leapt for him. She wriggled and licked, her little body trembling under his hands. “Hey, hey, honey, it’s okay, you’re safe.” She snuggled up under his chin. He couldn’t help but return the hug.
Grandma approached, worry on her face. “I’m sorry, Virgil, I didn’t realise.”
“It’s okay.” He reached an arm around his grandmother, bringing her into the hug. “She’s just had a scary day.” He pulled both of them close.
Scott was glaring at him from a distance.
John smiled at them and drank his beer.
Bo started chewing on his collar.
-o-o-o-
As the evening progressed, Bo slowly let herself part from Virgil as each of the members of his family, bar Alan and Scott, came to say hello or fed her from the table. There was one interesting moment when the little puppy encountered Sherbert for the first time.
Bo yipped.
Sherbert yapped.
And as the entire party fell silent, the two dogs stared each other down.
Virgil was poised for a rescue and Penelope was not far behind him, but a moment later Bo licked Sherbert across the nose, Sherbert gently butted the little puppy with his head, and from that point onwards they were best of friends, Sherbert quite proudly showing his new friend around.
But never out of sight of Virgil.
Bo and Parker had a staring moment not long after, but Sherbert barrelled on in and head butted the driver, snapping him out of it. It wasn’t long before the little puppy had him rubbing her ears as well.
Kayo stood her distance, assessing Bo as much as the puppy was assessing her. A calm arched eyebrow slowly rose as Bo tilted her head up at the security specialist. She pressed her lips together and faced Virgil. “There will be training.”
Virgil blinked and his sister turned and stalked off. Bo eyed her the entire time, only finally distracted by a yelp from Alan as Gordon threw him in the pool.
The engineer was left wondering if he should be worried or not.
The meal was delicious, of course. Scott had managed to keep Grandma away from the barbecues and MAX had been on task for a good part of the day. There was the mandatory turkey, and this year a couple of large snapper had been baked to perfection, along with some crayfish, oysters, salads and roast vegetables. This was followed by pie, oh, so much pie, Christmas cookies, and Christmas pudding with custard and the option of ice cream.
Virgil, as usual, made sure he took advantage of all the options. Consequently, post-banquet found him sprawled on a pool lounger staring up at the stars amongst the tinsel overhead. Bo, who had also eaten probably more than she should have, was curled up between his feet.
The soft sounds of quiet carols and muted conversation wafting across the water lulled him gently to sleep.
-o-o-o-
Scott felt like Scrooge. He was tired, worried and even a little angry. He was not enjoying himself, no matter how hard he tried. Grandma had cornered him at least twice, her hand on his shoulder trying to soothe his ire.
The annoying thing was that he wasn’t even sure what he was angry about. The rescue hadn’t been the best, but they had done what they could and some lives had been saved that otherwise wouldn’t have. The team had performed well, no one had been injured, they were all back home safe and sound.
And there was food, family and Christmas. There wasn’t really much more he could ask for.
His eyes settled on Virgil, asleep on one of the loungers, oblivious to the tinsel being draped across his hair by Gordon behind him.
Scott sighed.
But then a little head bobbed up between his brother’s bare feet and Bo barked at Gordon quite firmly.
Virgil was obviously far too out of it to wake, but Gordon looked appropriately abashed at the challenge.
Scott found himself smiling.
Realised he was smiling, dumped the smile and frowned.
Gordon scampered off leaving a sleeping Virgil in a crown of silver tinsel.
The little dog leapt off the lounger and chased after the aquanaut.
Okay, he had to admit the dog was adorable. He could see what had captured his brother’s eye, and Scott certainly had no objection to adding to their family.
But Virgil...when Virgil loved, he loved with his whole heart, and last time he had lost a pet, it had been bad, so bad.
They had lost so much in their lives already, why volunteer to lose more?
He sighed. It was stupid to think that way, but part of him could remember that devastated teenager, the depression and the mess that followed. Virgil had been as broken as the rest of them when their mother died, but when his dog died two years later, his reaction had been so self-destructive he had needed counselling and a therapist. Scott didn’t know if the two incidents were related or if it was how his brother connected to pets, or whatever. He only knew he never wanted to see his brother go through that again.
Their father was missing, and here was Virgil with a pet once again.
Sure, he was an adult now, and had tackled so much loss since, but...
Another sigh.
A yip and he looked down to see said dog staring up at him with a mouth full of tinsel, tail wagging.
“Gordon!”
“Yesssss, masster?” His brother sidled up with a bow.
Scott rolled his eyes. “Did you want to face your brother having to tell him that his new puppy died choking on tinsel?”
“Oh, shit.”
“Exactly.”
The aquanaut scooped up the little dog and with gentle words extricated the tinsel from her mouth.
A moment later Gordon held her up to his cheek and Scott had the experience of two sets of brown eyes staring at him adoration.
“Oh, for the love of-“
“A puppy?” Gordon grinned at him. “She is a rather cute, isn’t she?”
“Leave it, Gordon.”
His brother frowned. “What’s chewing on your underwear?”
“Gordon-“
“Hey, it was a legit question, bro. You’re a grumpy ass on Christmas Day. Where’s the merry? We have food and there will be presents. And there is a puppy. You couldn’t ask for more cuteness.” Gordon held up Bo who attempted to lick Scott’s nose.
“Gordon-‘
“Nope, so not going down with you, bro. We’ve earned some happy. We’re all here, in one piece, it’s lovely weather. Cheer up, for goodness sake.” Despite himself, Gordon frowned. “Here have some puppy love.” And suddenly Scott found himself with his arms full of wriggling Bo. Gordon turned and walked off, eventually calling out to Alan, no doubt looking for mischief.
Bo tilted her head to one side and stared up at him.
Aw, hell, weaponised cuteness.
She jumped up and licked his nose.
Scott sighed.
Voice low. “You know, you better look after my brother. He’s a good man and he does a lot of good things.” A swallow. “He’s a little prone to heroics. Perhaps we can team up in that department and help keep his butt alive.”
Her tongue lolled out one side of her mouth and she grinned.
“Maybe try that on the Hood and solve all our problems.”
He gave in and drew her close to his chest, rubbing under her chin.
“I really hope we don’t regret this.”
-o-o-o-
“PRESENTS!”
Alan’s voice cut through his slumber and shook him awake. Wha-?
“Time to wake up, sleepy head.” Scott’s voice.
A sharp little bark.
Bo.
He flung his eyes open, and immediately squinted at the fairy lights floating in the light breeze far above. A blink and to his left a shadow formed into his eldest brother. His blue eyes were smiling as he sat on the next lounge over, holding Bo, scratching her gently. She was obviously enjoying it.
Virgil frowned. “I thought you were pissed at me.”
“I was.” His brother shrugged. “I got over it.” Bo was licking Scott’s fingers.
Wow, the ability to tame the savage big brother. The little girl must be heaven-sent.
There was a whir of wheels and MAX tore out onto the patio decked out in tinsel and lugging brightly coloured presents. MiniMAX darted in behind him carrying a smaller present which was deposited carefully on the table before he disappeared inside only to return with another.
“You okay?”
“Huh?” Virgil peered up at his brother before stretching the length of the lounger. Several joints cracked and the ache across his shoulders from the morning vaguely made its presence known. A yawn. “I’m fine. Just tired. This morning sucked.”
Tinsel slid down his face. He sighed and threw it off. Gordon was getting repetitive.
Scott dipped his head, attempting to hide a smile, and looked down at Bo. “True.” He scratched her under her chin one more time before offering her to him. “Here.”
Bo didn’t bother to wait for him to sit up, she bounded out of Scott’s arms and onto Virgil’s belly. “Oof.” She then danced up and down on it.
Scott grinned at him. “She’s not going to be little when she grows up.”
“Augh, she’s not little now.” He managed to capture her enough so he could sit up, but she struggled free excitedly and dashed from his arms, jumping on the lounger, just as MiniMAX buzzed over with a small present.
Bo barked at him and MiniMAX dodged to deposit the present in Virgil’s lap. He caught it, but with his hands now occupied, he wasn’t fast enough to grab Bo before she let off another bark, jumped excitedly and latched her teeth onto the little robot.
The result was immediate.
MiniMAX shrieked, several of his legs caught in the puppy’s mouth, and with a whir of rotor blades, took off madly across the patio.
With Bo hanging on.
“Bo!” Virgil dropped the present and made a grab for the pair, but missed.
Every eye turned to see what the commotion was about. Virgil stumbled over the lounger and kicked it out of the way. He was vaguely aware of Scott doing something similar. “Brains!”
MiniMAX was obviously panicking. The little robot darted about trying to shake off his assailant. Bo was whining in her throat.
Virgil dashed after them.
Despite the puppy’s weight, MiniMAX still managed a great deal of height, Brains’ ‘build ‘em tough’ policy obviously carrying through to his robots. Despite having the strength to carry the puppy, the off-balance mass hampered MiniMAX’s navigation and they were wobbling all over the place.
All Virgil could see was a tragedy in the making. The pool, the concrete, anything horribly solid. He ran beneath them, desperately attempting to reach the now whining puppy. Family members and furniture were dodged and shoved out of the way as he clambered after them.
A chair ended up in the pool. Gordon squawked and almost joined it. Virgil leapt off an empty lounge, made a grab for them, missed and ended up in the Christmas tree.
Fake pine needles jabbed him in the face as he went down in a pile of tinsel and Christmas baubles. He swore, his clothing caught, his hair caught, and his everything tangled in tinsel, but he made it to his feet just in time to see Bo let go.
“No!”
Oblivious to everything other than the puppy falling, Virgil finally got traction under his bare feet, took a running leap and grabbed Bo from the air. He instinctively wrapped himself around her, rolling in midair, tinsel and baubles flung in all directions.
As he plummeted into the pool.
The splash took his senses, muffling exclamations, and repeated shouts of his name. There was dark blue, and wet, and, for a moment, blessed silence.
Then logic reasserted itself and he kicked for the surface.
Sound, light and cool air on his skin. He blinked water out of his eyes as he lifted Bo up so she could breathe, his legs kicking to keep them afloat.
She whined at him as if to tell him off, sneezed, and began enthusiastically licking the saltwater off his face.
He couldn’t help but grin, and he knew he wasn’t the only one as laughter drifted across the water.
“You trashed the tree, Virg.”
“I don’t think he cares, Gordon.” He looked up to see Grandma smiling at him.
And no, he didn’t. As Scott poked him with a pole to help drag him to the edge and Bo decided his ear might do for her next meal, he suddenly felt joy. It could simply have been relief, but he was going to tack it up as Christmas joy and enjoy it while he could.
-o-o-o-
“Only you, Virgil.”
“It wasn’t intentional.”
“I have no doubt of that, it never is.”
“Aw, c’mon, Scott.”
“If it was intentional then I would have to accuse you of doing it deliberately just to get out of helping with the Christmas dishes.”
“We have a dishwasher.” Bo let off a bark as MiniMAX flew past dragging a bag full of recyclable cups, plates and cutlery, giving Virgil and his dog an extremely wide berth. “And there are hardly any dishes.”
“You are still getting out of clean up.”
“C’mon, Scott, you know me better than that. Ow!”
“Sit still. I’ve almost got all of it.”
Virgil leant back against the lounge, Bo curled up in his lap. “I’m not particularly happy about this either you know.”
“You’ll be fine.”
“I know that, Ow!”
“Well, if you would watch where you were going, you wouldn’t have collided with the Christmas tree. And what’s with the bare feet anyway?”
“Bo ate one of my boots.”
Scott snorted and pulled out yet another tiny piece of glass Christmas bauble from the bottom of Virgil’s left foot. “She hasn’t been here twenty-four hours yet and she has already caused havoc.”
“She’s a puppy.”
“I noticed.” Scott sighed, peering through his magnifying visor at his brother’s foot. “I think that’s all of it. Please don’t do that again. You’ll be limping for a week.”
“I’m not planning on it.”
As Scott wrapped his foot in gauze, he eyed the puppy on Virgil’s lap. “And you, young lady, I thought we had a deal.”
To Virgil’s surprise, Bo’s head bobbed up and she looked distinctly guilty.
Scott arched an eyebrow. “Hmm, don’t let it happen again.”
Bo yapped at him.
Virgil stared at both of them. “What?”
“None of your business, you just lay back and look after yourself.” And Scott was smirking.
Ooookaay.
He relaxed back against the lounge and stared up at the fairy lights above.
Bo stomped up the length of him and licked his eyeball.
He coughed up a laugh and grabbed an armful of wriggly puppy.
“I think that was a Merry Christmas, Virg.” Scott held his injured foot and grinned. “Merry Christmas.”

Movies of 2019 - My Pre-Summer Favourites (Part 1)
The Runners-Up:
20. THE HEAD HUNTER – coming in VERY low under the radar, this wildly imaginative and stylish low budget chiller plays like a survival horror take on the Skyrim video games. Essentially a one-man show, it follows the bloody, muddy daily grind of a professional monster slayer in a sword-and-sorcery kingdom driven to vengeance by brutal personal tragedy. Christopher Rygh is broody, grizzled and genuinely heartbreaking as the warrior, while debuting writer-director Jordan Downey shows great future potential.
19. HELLBOY – I’d be the first to agree we really don’t need a Hellboy movie reboot (just let Guillermo finish his trilogy, dammit!), but if Hollywood MUST disagree then we could do A LOT worse than this far bloodier R-rated full-on horror flick from Dog Soldiers director Neil Marshall, who really cranks up the darkness inherent in the franchise. Ultimately this is more for hardcore fans of Mike Mignola’s original comics than the uneducated masses, but Stranger Things star David Harbour’s “Big Red” is just one of many pleasures here.
18. THE SISTERS BROTHERS – writer-director Jacques Audiard (The Beat That My Heart Skipped, Rust & Bone) crafts a languid, introspective and richly character-driven western from the novel by Thomas Bidegain (who also co-wrote here). Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly are both typically excellent as the titular bounty-hunter siblings who are the nominal focus of the story, but the film is as much focused on their prey, a pair of gold prospectors (Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed) with a revolutionary scientific method.
17. THE DIRT – in a year when they’re jumping on the biopic bandwagon in a big way (we’ve also seen the hunt for Bonny & Clyde in The Higwaymen), Netflix got particularly ambitious with this warts-and-all, thoroughly OTT and often very funny account of the rise/fall/rise-again of notorious glam metal band Mötley Crüe from Jackass director Jeff Tremaine. Douglas Booth (Romeo & Juliet), Colson Backer (aka Machine Gun Kelly), Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones) and Daniel Webber (11.22.63) bring the band to life in all their debauched glory.
16. COLD PURSUIT – Liam Neeson gently sends up his geriatric-arse-kicker persona in this jet black comedy thriller from acclaimed Norwegian director Hans Petter Morland, adapted from his own hit film In Order of Disappearance (originally starring Stellan Skarsgaard). Neeson is huge fun as the snow-plough driver out to avenge the murder of his son at the hands of jumped-up Denver drug kingpin “Viking” (TV’s Jekyll & Hyde’s Thomas Bateman), causing all kinds of bloody hell to break loose in the snowbound Colorado wilderness.
15. VICE – Anchorman writer-director Adam McKay continues down the more semi-serious road he began with his 2015 hit The Big Short with this incendiary “biopic” of the rise to power of former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, rumoured to be the true “power behind the throne” of George W. Bush’s controversial term in office at the White House. Christian Bale delivers one of the finest performances of his career as the unassumingly Machiavellian master manipulator behind the WMD Conspiracy, et al. MAYBE …
14. ON THE BASIS OF SEX – director Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker, Deep Impact) returns to the big screen with a vengeance with this powerful, thought-provoking and very important courtroom drama following the early career of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the crusading firebrand lawyer campaigning for women’s equal rights who ultimately became Chief Justice for the U.S. Supreme Court. Rogue One star Felicity Jones is perfectly cast as a woman who let NOTHING stand in the way of her dreams, even the laws of the United States.
13. DESTROYER – Karyn Kusama has had a somewhat mixed career since her directorial debut with Girlfight in 2000 (Jennifer’s Body was enjoyable, but Aeon Flux was pretty embarrassing), but this edgy, doom-laden modern LA-Noir is a spectacular return to form, driven by a powerhouse, vanity-free career-best performance from Nicole Kidman as the self-destructive maverick LAPD cop whose youthful misadventures undercover return haunt her, with bloody consequences.
12. THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING – Louis Ashbourne Serkis (son of Andy) proves he takes right after his dad as an unassuming British schoolboy who discovers he’s the long-lost heir of King Arthur, destined to wield Excalibur in the battle to prevent the cataclysmic return of evil sorceress Morgana (Mission: Impossible’s Rebecca Ferguson). Attack the Block writer-director Joe Cornish brings us something more family-friendly with his long-awaited follow-up, but his gleefully dark, anarchic sense of humour remains intact.
11. TRIPLE FRONTIER – Margin Call writer-director J.C. Chandor teams up with Oscar-winning screenwriter Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) on what is EASILY the best Netflix Originals feature this year (so far, at least), a nail-bitingly tense, morally ambiguous suspense thriller following a group of former special forces operatives (Oscar Isaac, Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal) who rob a drug lord and then have to fight their way out of the notorious titular South American region.

Just out of curiosity, why don’t you like young justice??
aight, so i knew i was gonna wait to respond to this ‘til i had some time to explain.
and i want to start out by saying that i don’t think Young Justice, as a property, is a bad show. in fact, i think it’s a show that had GREAT potential. i watched every new episode via livestream every saturday lol. and now, i’ll be honest when i say it’s been some time since i’ve rewatched it, and i’m always open to changing opinions. a few years back, i wanted to give it another, fresher perspective and dove in for a rewatch, but ultimately didn’t finish. i don’t remember my reasoning exactly, but i recall being disappointed.and it’s funny i received this ask this week, b/c my friend and i were planning on giving it another rewatch for shits and giggle after finals ( sober or not is tbd ).
but so, here’s where i stand on the show.
i started watching YJ when it was abt 5 episodes into s1. and i binged those first five and stick to my guns that holy SHIT 1-3 are bomb as FUCK. super strong start! Independence Day will never not get me SO HYPE and remind me why i fell in love with DC’s teenage heroes in the first place. it’s so… youthful. a fun conversation for another time.
and now, when i started watching YJ, it was like four months into my making my TT!Kid Flash rp blog, and two months after i’d gotten into reading comics; when i found out Wally was like a biG DC CHARACTER, NOT JUST AN OLD CARTOON ONE-SHOT, i went EVERYWHERE to get my hands on more about Wally West. ironically, the first purchase i ever made from a comic store was a silver age Teen Titans tale, issue #2 of TTY1, and two issues of the old Young Justice comics ( still some of my favorite comics to this day; more on that later ).TL;DRi saw a commercial for YJ, ft. my fave DC char and my fave comic title and went “HOSHIT”.
as the episodes pushed the show’s plot along, it was fun and explorative of a more intense side to the idea of a group of superteens in the DCU. and again, very TEENAGER-Y, which i say in the BEST of ways, considering that was the target audience as well. but, as part of that audience at the time, one of the things that had started to bother me was the character relationships. yeah, i was loving on most of the main cast at the time, but for the first half of the season, the team’s supposedly-close friendships were pushed to the backburner ( EXCEPT for KF and Rob’s, which was one of the only things that got me through the season ). the first season WAS about straining relationships. the social drama was palpable. you NEED conflict in your plots, and char-v-char is especially fun. but i remember feeling like there was little bonding. they were a group of acquaintances, learning to co-habitate the same space- not to say that they didn’t seem like friends, but there was a lack of balance between “teens being professionals in their field” and “teens being immature teens”. both were squeezed in, but both consistently felt forced.
which brings me to the next point: forcing relationships without developing them!i wasn’t sure why i was supposed to care about Roy, like. At all. the team always bringing up that they trained alongside him, grew with the guy, and then??? nada, except when the plot needed edgy tantrumy angst.then there was spitfire. i ship spitfire now, but the ENTIRETY of s1 i was SO FRUSTRATED, because all those two did was bicker. wally was pretty foul to artemis, who was also just plain mean to wally. and i say this with the two of them as my TOP FAVE CHARS.and don’t get me STARTED on the best char on the entire team, KALDUR’AHM!!!! who was shit on by EVERYONE– fandom and plot, alike. actually, i do recall in my last rewatch starting two tallies of everytime kaldur was DISRESPECTED and TREATED LIKE GARBAGE BY TEEN AND ADULT CHARS, versus everytime he was treated respectfully. this boy was BRUTALIZED through s1.m’gann and conner, too– a cute concept, but borderline cringey, even creepy, at times. i was rooting for supermartian. i was. but it was like the writers didn’t know how to write a slowburn. the idea was honestly better on paper than in execution.
the YJ spinoff comics filled in a lot of these gaps, i’ll admit. it explored the chars, their relationships, and their behavior in ways the show seemingly didn’t have time to do, and i LOVE the spinoff series. but i also firmly believe that you shouldn’t need a second media to fix the first. it’s capitalistic and no fun.
through the duration of the show, there were also issues such as the hiatuses. i don’t recall them coming with much warning at a time, nor sticking to much of a schedule. i don’t actually remember what they were for, either. but, before and after each of (three?? was it three?) hiatuses, the showrunners would introduce a new character during a new arc, give said character some liners or plot fodder, and do away with them for the rest of the season ( i.e Rocket, Zatanna, Garth and Tula, etc. ).
i have some other, nitpickier issues– why was wally That Way, why was clark Like That, how come bruce was the ENABLER the entire time, etc– but many can be argued as whether they affected the show as a whole or not.my actual biggest problem was the direction.the director.Greg Weisman.bc idk what the hell he was doing half the time, and i don’t think he knew, either. the writing wasn’t GREAT, but at least it was consistent. Weisman truly had a marketable property, a fan favorite, and one of CN’s best running shows at the time. but between the hiatuses, the writing’s faults, the insufficient character development, and a HUGE ego thanks to his fanbase, Weisman was unable to uphold the integrity of his show. there was both fan-pandering, AS WELL AS consciously going AGAINST fans’ wishes. there was that whole “Ask Greg”-thing, too, where he would get back to a fan once every blue moon and answer background questions about the show’s universe, which became a scene of hot debate. Greg Weisman became the JK Rowling of DC, and lost a lot of my respect with his lack of damage control, and impulse control.
then, with the very inception of the show– and i don’t actually know if i can blame weisman for this or not, but i wanna know who pitched it, otherwise– the show’s CONCEPT. why was Young Justice made with this particular cast of characters, cherrypicked through DC history, aged down or revamped or just cut-and-pasted where they didn’t fit? why was its concept, “COVERT TEAM OF ADOLESCENTS WITH SUPERPOWERS WORKING TOGETHER WITH LACK OF SUPERVISION”? why was the show called “Young Justice” when what they wanted was the TT v3 comics? WHY DID WE NEED TO TURN SUPERMAN INTO THE UNAVAILABLE-FATHER TROPE????? questions that will forever remain unanswered. that’s a lie, i can answer most of them, myself.but all in all, a show with great potential that failed in execution.
season 2, i actually enjoyed more than season 1– it felt like there was more of a handle on the story and cast, alike. did i approve of season 2 and what went down? debatable. but that’s a very subjective view. objectively, season 2 flowed better than season 1, but still didn’t follow through on subplots, nor resolved relationships or even characterization ( m’gann, girl what the fuck?? ). very little team bonding, save for, once again, two chars out of the whole team. again, another season of SO much potential, but one that fell short.
its pros, however– i really enjoyed the darker themes, getting darker as time went on. there was a lot of tragedy in s2, and different perspectives and walks of life to watch through different lenses. a much more diverse cast, and very different conflicts to tackle. i was impressed. i don’t think all the controversies were resolved, but i also wasn’t quite as upset that they weren’t; open-ended conflict is frustrating, but is a great lead-in to another season.
————which, for better or for worse, we weren’t supposed to have.i personally would’ve rather the show ended there, not quite on a high note ( are u fucking kidding me fjaoisdfjoaifio waLLY, this was during the n52, too ), but with a concrete END. of course there was more to explore, the world they’d built was a big one, but we didn’t need to.
i was literally just yesterday chatting w my sis, bc after school lets out, we wanna watch season 3. i really do. i’m upset that there is one, but i do wanna know what happens to my faves. and, on top of that, i’ve been meaning to do one BIG rewatch, anyways, to get me set up for s3. as a student of film, it’s a huge philosophy of mine to rewatch EVERYTHING and go in with the intent of giving it a fresh start and a clean slate– both medias i love, and medias i hate. it’s important to analyze pop culture critically, and even things that aren’t good can still be enjoyable.
for me, Young Justice wasn’t a phenomenal show to begin with, from its technological side to its creative team to its politics, and i stopped enjoying it pretty early on. but, that isn’t to say it didn’t accomplish GREAT things, and isn’t UN-enjoyable; it has its moments. also i would DIE for most of the cast, i fucking love the characters.
i don’t think anyone is wrong for liking Young Justice. i try to stay in the loop about it, and form new opinions based on whatever information is out there until i can get ahold of the source material. and, i do like aspects of the show. but ultimately, it just isn’t my cup of tea.

watching movies and putting opinions online again ✌️ adaptation (2002) this time
ok um confession i did not like adaptation that much </3 like i did think some lines were funny and i think the double entendre is interesting and yeah it’s cool or whatever that the reason the movie goes off the rails bc he asked his brother for help and part of my lack of enjoyment was me going in expecting the wrong thing but also it was just. not fun to watch? like i get what they were trying to do w the whole this is so meta😂 thing but there Have to be better avenues for that than some like tortured white guy. like just bc ur poking fun at urself for doing smth doesn't make it not bad, both w the protag being a fucking loser bc at some point it’s just self-aggrandizing 😐 and the purposefully hollow hollywood-style ending
like it feels too self pitying in a way? i think the pinnacle of that is the scene where he asks the waitress to hang out w him or whatever and she gets this look of disgust and is like Oh..... in a way that real people don't act and was a huge turnaround from how she was being super friendly w him before and it's just like so much of the movie is just to establish that he's a loser and people suck etc etc which is like .kind of annoying to watch. also the whole "im gonna take a real life woman and sexualize her and make up a relationship but it's Ironic get it!" doesn't super sit right w me
if u want smth that tackles metanarrative and the cyclical nature of tragedy/drama literally just watch revstar or princess tutu like the fucking anime girls did it better -_-
also think it's funny that we got both the hollow action ending and nobody learning anything except some vague sense of hope and it was STILL incredibly unsatisfying. and it annoys me that criticism is just brushed off by being like oh but that's the point you’re just not smart enough to get it! bc like no i Do get it i Do understand but it's still self-indulgent Even If it's purposefully so. my main source of annoyance is like . the movie is supposed to be smart bc it's bad but actually bc of that it's good? which is like whatever to me AND the characters are no fun
