THE NURSE’S STATION: This is my reality, my other reality, when I’m not Coaching, being a wife, mother, daughter, sibling, Aunty, friend, and teacher, I’m a 👩‍⚕️ Nurse. My duties got recently shifted in the hospital, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and the need to mobilize the workforce towards screenings. Days like this, I get to greet everyone who walks through the hospital door, welcome them to my station of hand sanitizers, temperature check, and questions about their health. They are employees like me, doctors, nurses, patients, and their family members. My heart breaks when I have to tell a family member, they have to choose who gets to see their patient that day, for, it can’t be the whole family like before. The only thing they can look into, are my eyes, willing them to see that I understand their pain, their confusion, their fears for themselves, and balancing this new normal for safety. Later, the rules may change, and it may be no visitors at all. As a medical professional, my mission has never been clearer, to partner with the healing forces with all the love and skills available to me. However, in these times, apart from my badge and mask, I’m just like the patient or family member, with the same emotions, but on this side of the table, I get to be the strong one. I have seen nurses, medical professionals, in all the zeal to keep us safe, morph into zombies, good intentions, yes; but I want to urge my fellow healers, now is the time to find that great balance. People are hurting and confused, some of them express it through I’ll-placed aggression, and yes, some are just plain ignorant and rude. Now is the time to combine a strong spine with a soft heart, empathy with a strong “no, I can’t let you in”. The eyes are the window to our being, make sure your love finds it’s way to the world, even if the only windows of escape are between your ears. Pray for me, pray for us all fighting for your safety, while sacrificing ours. Stay home and be healthy. We got this, so you don’t have to.
