Back at home, Daisy was getting on with her chores. Now that Oak had to help in the garden, she had to do things like make beds and clean toilets. She wasn't entirely sure if she liked the arrangement...

The family spent the rest of the day enjoying themselves. Daisy showed off her gymnastic skills to her dad while Oak played quietly with his toys in the lounge.

When Ash got home, she paid their taxes for the round. Now that the farm and the grocery store were doing so well, they owed quite a lot.

Sharing a home with someone, regardless of square footage or relationship, involves an unavoidable amount of intimate physical knowledge. As an army mate of John's had once said eloquently, 'Well, I know what your shit smells like, don't I?'

Those things, John is prepared for. Has got used to, even, in his once-and-future living arrangement. He's a doctor, a combat veteran, and a widowed father. He's not exactly squeamish.

And he can personally attest, on several levels, to the fact that Sherlock is not a machine. You can't share a bathroom and not learn a few things about a person.

But… it's like some switch got turned on after their 'moment' in the stairwell.

(Because no, they had not marched back upstairs and worked things out per Mrs Hudson's request. As will shock no one, they had instead gone on their stubborn ways, and are ploughing through their daily lives willy-nilly as long as they can.)

(Which is not very long.)

Things keep happening.

- John, sitting guilelessly at the table, makes to stand just as Sherlock is walking by, and ends up with his nose essentially in the armpit of Sherlock's dressing gown. Which Sherlock is still wearing. After sleeping several hours in it and old pyjamas.

- John, Rosie in his lap, snorts awake to find himself-- well, both him and his daughter-- slumped into Sherlock on the sofa, credits scrolling on the television screen while Sherlock scrolls through his phone. And, unfortunately, both John and his daughter have managed to leave sleep-warm saliva on Sherlock's person, in two round spots on his breathtakingly expensive shirt. Sherlock, who must have noticed, seems unconcerned. John wonders briefly if he's woken up in an alternate dimension, then realises they'd been watching Doctor Who and it must have seeped into his psyche.

- John, now one hundred percent accustomed to wiping his toddler's nose, is so focused on his laptop screen when he hears a sneeze that he doesn't think (at all) before pulling out a tissue and reaching over to the face of the sneezer. That it's Sherlock is only a fact he recognises a split second too late.

- John, brain uncaffeinated, yawns while reaching across Sherlock to grab something off the table, and realises with a start that it's 6am and neither of them have cleaned their teeth. He stares at the mouth so close to his, at the man whose breath is bitter, yes, but somehow not unagreeable, then jerks away gracelessly. 'I'll just--' He points his thumb over his shoulder at the loo, and escapes, face flaming.

- And finally: John, going quietly mad when Rosie gets her first real, frightening fever. His training doesn't stand a chance of overriding his lizard brain, so he spends three days ignoring absolutely all personal hygiene and never leaving his daughter's side. When it finally breaks, when John feels like he can breathe again, he notices Sherlock is there, too, beside him, quietly watching her sleep restfully for the first time in what feels like long, dusty years. And he suddenly realises he must smell like -- well, like a locker room and a crowded pub rolled around in the dirt then pissed off a skunk, probably. And Sherlock is standing next to him as if he smells like roses. This, unexpectedly, makes John's stomach broil under a surge of affection, and he feels his eyes stinging for one horrifying, sleep-deprived moment.

Soon, after so many of these things, he can't help wondering if God or whomever is taking the piss. If fate is having a good old go at John H Watson by giving him the closest, most fulfilling relationship he's ever had-- and making it with the one person who can knock him flat on his arse and keep him there.

He's tempted, more than once, to give the sky two fingers. But he has yet to get around to doing it. He's too busy, for once, actually living.

DAY 9 (attempt no 3)

John did not have a shift scheduled this Wednesday so after dropping off Rosie at school he took a detour over to a local farmers market before lunch to collect some fresh groceries and enjoy the mild September weather.

When he returned to Baker Street with his haul of apples, potatoes, radishes and fennel, he found Sherlock sitting crosslegged on the living room carpet surrounded by a halo of little screws, wires and other electrical parts. If that was not worrying enough on its own, then there still was the object at the centre of Sherlocks current efforts.

"Wait, is that our water kettle?"

The sad electric kettle sat right in front of the detective on the floor and seemed to be partially dismantled at the moment, with Sherlock poking at different parts of it with a dubious expression and only reluctantly raising his gaze at Johns exclamation.

"Obviously!"

"Why?"

"Something keeps going wrong with Watsons and my experiment. I investigated a few possible causes and observed that the heating plate that I used for my waterbath showed quite significant fluctuations in temperature when tracked over time. So my current reasoning is, that we might have killed the bacteria by heating them too much and that's why the experiment failed so far."

John stared down at him slack-jawed. "All of this is still about the experiment that you are doing with Rosie?"

That earned him an indignant look. "Of course! I am not going to teach her that she should just give up as soon as science gets a little bit tough. Repeating and tweaking your experiments is a fundamental part of scientific discovery! We are going to get to the bottom of this."

"So what did our kettle do to deserve this faith?"

"I am trying to get it hooked up to my contact thermometer and then use it to maintain my 42°C waterbath instead. I found someone on ResearchGate.net who did something similar when their heating block failed."

There was no use arguing with Sherlock whenever he got into this kind of singleminded focus so John decided to let him be for now.

Instead, he took care of his groceries and began preparing a cuppa for himself. He would need some tea to deal with this nonsense. It took him almost a minute of standing in front of the spot on the counter that usually housed the water kettle to realise that there was something vital missing. He groaned.

"I am sure Mrs Hudson will let us borrow her kettle for now", Sherlock noted distractedly. "If you go down now, could you bring me a cup as well?"

John shook his head in disbelief but eventually and with much grumbling he got out a second cup and stomped back into the living room, narrowly swerving around a collection of tiny screws that were almost impossible to spot on the colourful carpet.

"You are lucky that you are cute."

That stopped Sherlock in his tracks and had him staring up at John with absolute disgruntlement.

"Baby animals are cute. Most dogs are cute regardless of their age. Rosie is the rare exception of a human being genuinely cute."

"Yes, and your point is?"

"I. Am. Not. Cute!"

"Oh yes, you are adorable." John dropped a fleeting kiss onto the other mans dishevelled curls before moving towards the stairs for some well-deserved tea and 10 minutes of relative sanity in the sanctuary of Mrs Hudsons kitchen.

-> No Rosie this time round, but she will of course make an appearance again for the next parts. No water kettles were harmed in the writing of this chapter. I am fairly certain that what Sherlock is doing here is pretty impossible, but I am not going to let that stop me!

Two quick propaganda rules:

1. Propaganda is good and encouraged, just don’t send any negative propaganda. This tournament is for fun, and anti-propaganda kinda ruins that.

2. If you do make propaganda, you can either send it through my ask box, or you can reblog the post with your propaganda. Either is fine!

These 6 brackets will go on until there’s only one character left in each. Once the six semi-finalists are chosen, there will be two battles of 3, and then the winners of that will go against each other in the finals! Each poll will last for one day, but the finals and semifinals will be a week each. I've been seeing screenshots of this tweet making the rounds lately:

I did a thread on Twitter adding some historical context, but it's easier to write long-form stuff on websites like Tumblr, so I'll do it here, too.

This is a screenshot from a 1944 election propaganda film called Hell-Bent For Election. The locomotives do indeed represent FDR (left) and his rival, Thomas E. Dewey (right). Dewey would famously try to run again in 1948 and was considered the favorite against Harry Truman, leading to the famous Dewey Defeats Truman newspaper headline. The film was directed by Chuck Jones (yes, that Chuck Jones) and distributed by United Auto Workers. It was made amidst WWII, and it isn't subtle about making sure the viewer knows a vote against FDR is a vote for Hitler. (Weirdly enough, there's a character that can easily be read as an antisemitic caricature trying to get the protagonist to vote for Dewey despite what we know was happening in retrospect; this is actually quite jarring and uncomfortable from a historical perspective.)

OP probably doesn't know this, but FDR isn't being depicted as a bullet train. The Shinkansen doesn't show up until the 1960s, and at any rate, the US was very much at war with Japan at the time this film was made, so there's no way FDR would be depicted using Japanese railroad technology even if it did exist at the time. What he is being shown as, however, is a streamliner.

Notice this gap here? Streamlined steam locomotives usually still had their drive wheels exposed to a degree to make maintenance easier. In particular, FDR resembles a New York Central Mercury (4-6-4 Hudson) with his chin as an added cowcatcher.

The streamlined cladding for the Mercury was designed by Henry Dreyfuss, who would go on a few years later to design arguably the most famous streamlined NYC Hudson locomotives: the Dreyfuss Hudsons.

You can see a bit of influence from these in the FDR locomotive, as well, as it has a ridge along the top. These pulled prestigious passenger trains known for high speed, including the flagship 20th Century Limited. FDR was, of course, from old money and could afford that sort of thing, but that's likely not the reason they depicted him as a streamliner here.

Streamlined locomotives emerged in the 1930s despite the economic hardships in the United States at the time. They were designed to evoke a sense of speed and modernity, and they represented a society moving forward. By depicting FDR as one, it projects a sense of strength, especially in comparison to the tired old Dewey locomotive, which looks nearly half a century old. This was a crucial portrayal considering that FDR had polio (or possibly Guillain-Barré Syndrome, another explanation) and due to ableism he had to hide that affliction to avoid being seen by opponents (both political and wartime) as "weak." Additionally, Dewey's consist (the train cars he's pulling) is made up of outdated policies, including a caboose labeled with "Jim Crow."

I find the use of a streamliner rather ironic because at the time this film was made, many streamlined locomotives were being un-streamlined so the extra metal could be used for the war effort. It's a bit of an odd choice from that angle, but it's clear that the imagery of streamliners and what they represented in the minds of the public was still going strong.

Also worth noting: yes, FDR won the November 1944 election and began a fourth term in office. He died only a few months later, in April 1945, and was succeeded by his Vice President, Truman, who finished his term and then, as mentioned above, beat Dewey again in an upset to win a full term in 1948.

New Directions Tournament Masterpost

Alright y'all, I have polls and I'm going to make it everyone else's problem.

Thank you to @blurglesmurfklaine for the idea of having a Glee character poll tournament. Instead of taking on all Glee characters, I am sticking to members of the New Directions. I previously created a sorter for the New Directions, so if you want to create your own personal, bespoke ranking of the ND members, you can do so here (this sorter won't work on mobile).

Time flew by, as it always does when your aging system is 1 day per year, and suddenly it was time for little Sage to age into a toddler! Ash blew out the candles...

... and he aged up! Another adorably cute face - where did those chunky cheeks come from?! He's like a little chipmunk and I LOVE it! He unfortunately didn’t inherit Ash’s PlantSimism so it looks like only Oak will hold that honour in this family!

Daisy went straight to bed but Oak, not needing sleep, decided to be cute with his younger brother, tickling him and playing Peek-a-boo.

"All right, Oak, that's enough I'm afraid," said Kobe. "This little man has to go to sleep!" Kobe scooped up Sage and took him to his crib to put him down.

And so the round came to an end the next morning with Kobe trying to get Sage potty trained. "Oh, I didn't miss this with Oak!" he grumbled to himself.

Ash is now 40, Kobe is 37, Daisy is 9, Oak is 6 and little Sage is 1. I can't believe how quickly time is flying - Ash was 19 when we started! Next up is the O'Donnells and we're getting teens! Eeeee!

Greg Lestrade has tried only three times, in the several aggravating years of their acquaintance, to surprise his friend Sherlock Holmes. It has yet to work, even when Sherlock was off his tit. The bastard.

But Greg has a new plan. Time has passed; he'd like to think he's learned a thing or two. And he has a new ally: Rosie Watson. 

Sure, she's too small to be a super spy--yet--but she is a very excellent excuse to come round the flat. 

She's undoubtedly getting spoiled, this one, as if everyone involved is trying to miraculously compensate for a lost mum, even though they know it's futile. 

But also? Kids are fun when they're little. And Greg has no issue admitting he misses those days. Especially when he can hand the kid back when the nappy needs changing. It's brilliant.

And it's nearly John's birthday, so he figures he can kill two birds with one stone. Surprising Sherlock is just a bonus, a personal challenge he lays out for himself every once in a while. To keep his mind sharp. Like sudoku, but one where the sudoku insults you afterwards.

Today, he's prepared: He's bribed Mrs Hudson with some (completely legal, thanks) CBD sweeties. He's noted which stairs squeak. He's planned it for a time he reckons Rosie will be home and awake. He knows Sherlock isn't on any case for the Yard.

Yes, there's a chance John will be at his day job, or Sherlock will be on a private case, but those are chances he just has to take.

He holds the carefully wrapped package under his arm and starts up the stairs. He can hear music, immediately recognisable as Frozen II, but not much else.

One he gets to the landing, he considers the two doors in front of him. He listens again, harder, and thinks he can hear Sherlock and John conversing under the soundtrack, and thinks they're in the sitting room.

So he just goes for it. Opens the kitchen door slow as treacle, then peeks round.

He blinks, then pulls back. Has he just seen-- 

He peeks around again.

Yep. Yep, he has definitely seen Sherlock and John standing in front of the fireplace, in between their well-loved chairs, and kissing like the world is theirs to command: That feeling of a new relationship, which is a bit of luck considering how long those two blokes have known each other, but…

He rubs his eyes, then goes back for one more look.

Same picture, only this time-- Sherlock, eyes closed and expression intense as he holds John's face in one hand and explores his mouth without shame, uses the other hand to make two fingers in Greg's direction behind John's back.

Greg almost laughs out loud. Instead, he leaves the gift on the landing and heads back out. There's only so much a man wants to know about his mates.

He grins to himself. New new plan: Never try to surprise Sherlock Holmes again.

Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship

LA JOLLA – On a busy Sunday for the California men's tennis team, Carl Emil Overbeck clinched a 5-0, nighttime victory over UC San Diego and teamed with Mikey Wright to clinch the doubles point against the Tritons at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Jonathan Irwanto and Timofey Stepanov won their consolation semifinal Sunday morning in the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, but the consolation final was rained out. Stepanov and Irwanto, one of several pairs seeded 17th in the annual doubles tournament, defeated Caleb and Christian Settles, 4-6, 7-6(2), 10-7, in the Pacific Coast consolation semis. The Golden Bears were set to face Stanford's Filip Kolasinski and Hudson Rivera in the noon PT consolation final, until Mother Nature intervened. The Tritons were scheduled to host Cal at 3 p.m. PT at the Northview Tennis Courts in La Jolla, but rain scuttled the match at UCSD. The teams instead moved to the drier courts at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club for a 5:45 p.m. PT start. At court-three doubles, Cal's Alex Chang and John Kim beat Philip Lan and Carson Lee, 6-2, but then Ryder Jackson and Qian Sun – in the latter's first collegiate doubles match – lost on court one, 7-5, to UCSD's Zach Pellouchoud and Pelayo Rodriguez. Wright and Overbeck bested William Lan and Daniel Traxler, 7-6(4), on court two to secure the point for Cal. The Bears were dominant in singles, dropping just one set, with that coming in Sun's first collegiate singles match, though that contest was abandoned when Cal completed its victory. The Bears collected singles wins from Kim, Stepanov, Overbeck – who topped Carson Lee, 7-6(8), 6-1, to clinch – and Irwanto to post the 5-0 result. On October 28th, beloved actor Matthew Perry passed away. In addition to being known around the world for playing Chandler Bing on Friends, TWW and Sorkinverse fans also know and love him for his roles as Joe Quincy, the Associate White House Counsel who replaces Ainsley Hayes, and Matt Albie on Studio 60. We are deeply saddened by this loss and are sending our love to his family, friends, and fans.
