The discourse about Zendaya and her acting ability drives me crazy because people put these insane standards on her that they don't apply to anyone else.

The fact of the matter is, people don't like that a WOC has reached white woman levels of popularity. There's a ceiling they believe she is allowed to reach, and now that she's surpassed that, they act like she has to justify her popularity.

But they never hold whitw actors and men to that standard. The most popular actors in Hollywood have never been the "technical best" actors.

Tom Cruise doesn't have much range, Jennifer anniston has played the same character for almost 20 years, Keanu reeves sucks when he plays outside of type, Ryan Reynolds plays the same character every time, Henry Cavill is very limited in his range (and his looks make up for a lot). Zendaya is a much better/well rounded actress than say Chris Pratt, yet there wasn't this level of backlash when he was cast as Hollywood's leading man in everything for YEARS.

If you bring this up, they'll talk about things like "charisma" "leading man quality" which are completely subjective concepts that mask their personal biases. I find Zendaya alot more charismatic than Ryan Reynolds, but 90% of white men would disagree because they connect with him more. Neither are wrong, but why do their preferences hold more weight, then?

Like, yes, she is not an Oscar-level actress (yet), but neither are MOST popular actors. But to them, unless we can justify that she's this flawless technical actor, that means she's terrible. Her two Emmy's hold no weight, and "no one takes award bodies seriously" unless we're talking about Timmy, then he "deserves the recognition" ��

Most Disney actors aren't great (the way Disney trains them to act is pretty bad), and I would argue Zendaya is one of the best to come out of that machine (a better actress than Miley and Selena, no hate to either of them).

Lemme tell you the real reason they claim she's a bad actress: MJ & Chani.

Both characters were extremely popular within nerd spaces (note: white/male). In both cases, the writer (Jon Watts & Denis) completely re-wrote the characters from how they were in the source material and type-cast Zendaya to play a more assertive version of both characters. Zendaya played both characters PERFECTLY as they were written (I do have some criticisms of her accent as Chani, though tbf). And from the fanboys perspective, she played a butchered version of the og characters that they're comparing her to (also, she's not white. There is a certain level of "wokeness" "Dei" bs that they're also resentful about).

Yes, Zendaya played a terrible Mary Jane Watson, but she played a PERFECT Michelle Jones Watson (watch freaks & geeks + the breakfast club and you'll realize how good her performance is when you see who the character was inspired by). That's what she was hired to do (and it's especially heartbreaking when you realize that she never auditioned to play MJ in the first place. John Watts and Amy Pascal essentially conspired to get her in that role to bank on her popularity at the time, since Tom was a relative unknown). Yet she still gets so much hate for her portrayal of that MJ.

I know we always use Euphoria, but literally watch her crying and confessing in her love to Peter at the end of NWH, and tell me she doesn't "know how to show emotion". Compare that to Chris Pratt confronting his father at the end of Guardians two, and you'll see when an actor doesn't know how to convey emotion.

Hollywood has always had a popular "it girl" that they put in everything (Gwynth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, Renee Zelweger, Julia roberts), most of these women weren't giving oscar level performances and were still leading multiple projects a year. In every listed project (except Euphoria) Zendaya will be playing a supporting role (I doubt she will be in spider-man for more than 6 minutes), I beg some of y'all to examine... why does HER perceived popularity truly upset you so much? what has she done, that warrants so much anger at seeing her face? Who is it that you think she's "deserves" these opportunities that she's worked for (the usual entitlement from white women to any successful black woman).

Also, final point. Why do people act like acting is a static ability? Even if you don't love her performances, actors CAN get better (that's usually how it works). In fact, I would argue, going from Shake it up to challengers, Z's acting has objectively improved in each new role she has taken. Remember how Matthew Mcconaughey was considered a terrible actor for most of the 90s/2000s, then gave an Oscar level performance in DBC, followed by true detective and now is one of the most respected dramatic actors in the industry? Remember how Jim Carrey was considered a clown actor, until he blew people away in Eternal Sunshine?

Actors CAN improve. I genuinely want that particular faction of Z haters to examine why they're so dedicated to the idea of killing her career at the height of its momentum?

With 61 years under its belt, Doctor Who has changed a lot since it began all those years ago. Its continued survival has relied on that change and the countless people who made it happen. Trying to single out any one person as the most important to the history of the show would be near impossible, but hell if we aren't going to try.

Oh I'm in a hurry to watch the Marian stone but @moroniccats you wanted my thoughts on that list of Watson's (also apparently my Sherlock Holmes AO3 has been kidnapped by the brothers so I haven't found any Mrs Hudson knows fics yet sorry, but if I do I'll give them to you)

Sherlock Holmes—his limits.

1. Knowledge of Literature.—Nil.

2. Philosophy.—Nil.

3. Astronomy.—Nil.

4. Politics.—Feeble.

5. Botany.—Variable. Well up in belladonna, opium, and poisons generally. Knows nothing of practical gardening.

6. Geology.—Practical, but limited. Tells at a glance different soils from each other.After walks has shown me splashes upon his trousers, and told me by their colour and consistence in what part of London he had received them.

7. Chemistry.—Profound.

8. Anatomy.—Accurate, but unsystematic.

9. Sensational Literature.—Immense. He appears to know every detail of every horror perpetrated in the century.

10. Plays the violin well.

11. Is an expert singlestick player, boxer, and swordsman.

12. Has a good practical knowledge of British law.

You flinging spying on him in his sleep or something, eh Watson?

How'd you tell some of this?

Let's go by my thoughts from the start:

1) Literature. Kay. Guess it can come. Esp with the books and all

But like. Couldn't figure his job but could his reading habits? Which yes I tell about my beloved book likes and dislikes first but also like I know this tactic (and the tell him a story from my past or drop family lore suddenly) to get out of talking/doing things I don't like bc I have employed it and with how Sherlock so simply goes 'Oh those detectives are nonsense Watson' in this same book I think this was just a way to weasel out of telling him he was a detective which. Approved method Holmes.

2) philosophy.

I only ask how nil? Like the sorta quotes he produces-- and so much as a multilingual, i'd say solid in certain ways. Or perhaps it's psychology his whole knowing. His quotes tho Watson. First class. Wonders. Flinging half the reason I love this. Like screw the mystery gimme those quotes (half a joke-- and that's something, for I love mysteries and gore a fair bit🙃)

But also. Uhh you randomly talk to your new roomie who like knows everything about you 2 minutes in your first convo about his philosophical beliefs.

I once again say It's bc he was distracting you from his job. Or family or something. But I think distraction will be half the reason any of this is known to you anyway so lol let's not say that again and again (I likely will let's be honest).

Idk this is giving my gay vibes alr. I don't talk philosophy much with my friends no matter how close or how long we've known each other.

But also a lot of my friends are boring so ta. Point to y'all ig

3) Astronomy.

I mean considering he doesn't know the earth goes round the earth-- makes complete sense. I rather thing he holds it for like 2 minutes j incase it'll be needed in the case, and then down so hard in the rubbish bin its like crying at having ever been known by Sherlock lol

I can.. see why this might come up? Like idk if you go mention a random fact about the stars or sky or something and then Sherlock just. Blank.

And then it hits Watson that this guy is very very queer he doesn't know a thing. About. Stars.

I want to see that convo. Supposedly it's the one where Watson mentions the earth goes around the sun. But I don't remember at which point that comes up only that it does so maybe b4 that? Idk. In BBC he goes "What difference does it make if we go around the sun or a teddy bear" or something like that. And that becomes something EVERYONE brings up haha. Bc John mentions it in his blog.

I was half hoping when Mary first met him the first thing she'd go after you're alive? Is "you really don't know we go around the sun?" But I don't think it goes like that.

4) Politics.

Why does this feel wrong? Oh yeah. The whole Mycroft is the government thing. I don't think that's quite mentioned in the books-- at least not as he's introduced iirc-- but like we all know spying on Mycroft is a very big boredom-is-worse-than-death thing. It's the OG way of removing boredom.

Also. Love how Sherlock has no care of it. It makes sense to know ig.

Like politics would absolutely come up I can give Watson a point for knowing something normal about this man haha.

5) Botany.

And now how quite did this come upon you? Like you had no knowledge on his work back then so? Did he have some grand book on poisons or give you a lecture on how roses are only cool bc their thorns excrete like idk snake venom if you cut it (lies ik but how else)

Did you see some great grand plant experiment?

"knows nothing about normal botany and gardening but knows all the death plants" isn't something most people figure out about the guy they don't even know the job off, just saying darlin'

Gay gay gay. Not even questioned. You were really Holmes watching in those early days (also love how many times he tries to justify this haha)

6) Geology.

For ONCE you told us how you knew. But by this point did you not 'yeah cute weird genius lets sleep together!' Bc if my flatmate was Sherlock in looks and knew that-- my he'd never be able to get out of flat with how much id bug him lol. Ig u figured not explaining this would really get gay vibes out huh? Couldn't explain it with a cool fact at ALL Watson

He finally figured out there's a limit to being gay haha

7) Chemistry.

I mean his experiments exist so ig yeah point.

8) Anatomy.

Ig the experiments? Lots of body parts in them so..

9) Sensational Literature

ig the books he has could reflect that. And convos.

It's basically part of his job bc "there's nothing new under the sun" (did ACD Holmes say that or some other???)

But again I vote for you were a curious guy and he was distracting you.

Also you do later ask him about the other detectives and he gives his view on them LATER. So like. Idk what to think now.

10) Violin.

Yeah. I mean he plays. Very well. Won't doubt nothing on that end.

Something human to know. Good job Watson.

11) Singlestick player, boxer, swordsman.

I'd argue that Holmes could have something that could prove it. In fact that's all I can argue for Watson. Bc we're told Holmes does no exercise or anything that isn't a case basically. It's not like he'd be going round practicing bc of that. He could have mentioned it. But. Like. Hmm. 🤔 Hmm indeed.

Dude is very lethargic when he wants to be. And again pre the Study in Scarlet case itself Sherlock was giving people answers from just by listening to them.

So like.

It's not like he came back from something and went "oh.im fine just boxed someone a bit today" at which point btw you'd have cleaned him up and shared the room but. I'm going away from the topic.

No real reason to know this. Like not when we look at the whole context anyway.

Again at this point my guy is not there with him in cases...

12) British Law.

Makes sense to come in a convo but. Practical knowledge. What does that word in there mean?

Like.. that word is just nagging me. Idek why.

Also. Can we just talk about what he says next.

"At this point I gave up and threw the list in the fire in despair" (paraphrasing)

Like. Did you remember that list so we'll to jot it down from memory. Like ik you know him well now and what not but. Dude. You could have added any no of things accidentally.

So what I theorise is our dear Watson has the list upon him but doesn't want to tell us what else he has known about Sherlock Holmes. Or perhaps the list is incomplete.

Also like the next paragraph goes "Holmes was very good at violin playing difficult music for me but when left alone he'd play these very strange sort of music that didn't actually exist and I'd have been bothered by the sometimes melancholic sometimes cheerful music but he'd make me happy right after by playing my faves" do you not see your giving him heart eyes?

Anyway Ill have to end this here to watch the Mazarin Stone and also bc I plan to.make notes on all of my book markings so I can't put it all in here

Sharing a home with someone, regardless of square footage or relationship, involves an unavoidable amount of intimate physical knowledge. As an army mate of John's had once said eloquently, 'Well, I know what your shit smells like, don't I?'

Those things, John is prepared for. Has got used to, even, in his once-and-future living arrangement. He's a doctor, a combat veteran, and a widowed father. He's not exactly squeamish.

And he can personally attest, on several levels, to the fact that Sherlock is not a machine. You can't share a bathroom and not learn a few things about a person.

But… it's like some switch got turned on after their 'moment' in the stairwell.

(Because no, they had not marched back upstairs and worked things out per Mrs Hudson's request. As will shock no one, they had instead gone on their stubborn ways, and are ploughing through their daily lives willy-nilly as long as they can.)

(Which is not very long.)

Things keep happening.

- John, sitting guilelessly at the table, makes to stand just as Sherlock is walking by, and ends up with his nose essentially in the armpit of Sherlock's dressing gown. Which Sherlock is still wearing. After sleeping several hours in it and old pyjamas.

- John, Rosie in his lap, snorts awake to find himself-- well, both him and his daughter-- slumped into Sherlock on the sofa, credits scrolling on the television screen while Sherlock scrolls through his phone. And, unfortunately, both John and his daughter have managed to leave sleep-warm saliva on Sherlock's person, in two round spots on his breathtakingly expensive shirt. Sherlock, who must have noticed, seems unconcerned. John wonders briefly if he's woken up in an alternate dimension, then realises they'd been watching Doctor Who and it must have seeped into his psyche.

- John, now one hundred percent accustomed to wiping his toddler's nose, is so focused on his laptop screen when he hears a sneeze that he doesn't think (at all) before pulling out a tissue and reaching over to the face of the sneezer. That it's Sherlock is only a fact he recognises a split second too late.

- John, brain uncaffeinated, yawns while reaching across Sherlock to grab something off the table, and realises with a start that it's 6am and neither of them have cleaned their teeth. He stares at the mouth so close to his, at the man whose breath is bitter, yes, but somehow not unagreeable, then jerks away gracelessly. 'I'll just--' He points his thumb over his shoulder at the loo, and escapes, face flaming.

- And finally: John, going quietly mad when Rosie gets her first real, frightening fever. His training doesn't stand a chance of overriding his lizard brain, so he spends three days ignoring absolutely all personal hygiene and never leaving his daughter's side. When it finally breaks, when John feels like he can breathe again, he notices Sherlock is there, too, beside him, quietly watching her sleep restfully for the first time in what feels like long, dusty years. And he suddenly realises he must smell like -- well, like a locker room and a crowded pub rolled around in the dirt then pissed off a skunk, probably. And Sherlock is standing next to him as if he smells like roses. This, unexpectedly, makes John's stomach broil under a surge of affection, and he feels his eyes stinging for one horrifying, sleep-deprived moment.

Soon, after so many of these things, he can't help wondering if God or whomever is taking the piss. If fate is having a good old go at John H Watson by giving him the closest, most fulfilling relationship he's ever had-- and making it with the one person who can knock him flat on his arse and keep him there.

He's tempted, more than once, to give the sky two fingers. But he has yet to get around to doing it. He's too busy, for once, actually living.

The Lost Boys and the Major Arcana

Since a couple of people have asked, here are my thoughts re: The Lost Boys characters/scenery as the cards of the tarot’s major arcana. I am trying to interpret based on the movie rather than diving into pure headcanon land, so some characters who are less developed in the movie don’t get so much attention as the main players. Sorry!

My knowledge of tarot is a hodge-podge and I don’t claim my understanding of card meanings to be absolute. Far from it. The deck I refer to when discussing imagery of the cards is the Coleman-Smith tarot (more commonly known as the Rider-Waite-Smith, but fuck that, Pamela Coleman-Smith carried that project)

Here goes:

0 - The Fool - Michael. The Fool of the tarot is at the beginning of a journey. As with all journeys, there are both opportunities and perils. The common depiction is of a young man carrying a bindle and walking towards the edge of a cliff, looking upwards instead of at the path in front of him. One meaning of this card is a warning to look before you leap, something which Michael could have done with hearing.

As far as imagery goes, this would work with both Hudson’s Bluff or the train tracks, Michael depicted as about to step off the firm ground of past experience and to plunge into what’s unknown.

1 - The Magician - David - If our Fool is our neophyte, The Magician is our adept. The Magician is depicted as a robed man surrounded by the symbols of the 4 suits of the minor arcana. An infinity symbol above his head, he points up with one hand and down with the other, reflecting the occult maxim: ‘as above, so below.’ This is a card about (among other things) competency and mastery.

As leader of the boys and Michael’s initiator into vampirism, David fits this role.

2 - The High Priestess - Star - The High Priestess is the gateway into the mysteries, and she knows more than she will reveal. The answers are there, but she won’t just give them to you. (Sound familiar?)

3 - The Empress - Lucy - A card about nurturing, generative and creative forces, this is only fitting as it’s Lucy’s role as a good mother figure that ultimately spurs the entire plot of the movie.

4 - The Emperor - Max. The Emperor is about authority. Not necessarily a person, but having authority in a certain domain. And authority - in the paternal, patriarchal sense - can be oppressive.

5 - The Hierophant - Max - This card is about traditional values and conformity. While being a vampire is transgressive, Max manages to be a boring middle-class white man who literally has a suburban house with a white fence.

6 - The Lovers - Star, Michael, David-. As far as readings go this doesn’t always refer to a sexual relationship. It is about relationships in general, kindred spirits, and about choices. Joel Schumacher considered these three the main characters, and it is ultimately the links between them that drove Michael to go down into the cave in the first place.

7 - The Chariot - Grandpa’s Ford - It’s about movement, both in the literal sense but also about taking action. The car has a rather key role at a critical juncture. The motorcycles could also work.

8 - Strength - Sam - We’re talking strength of the inner kind. There are a few contenders for this one, but I gave it to Sam because it’s only because of his refusal to give up on Michael that the human characters and half-vampires were able to be saved. Thorn can be the lion.

9 - The Hermit - Grandpa - The Hermit is a wise figure who knows more than you do. As the name implies this figure is often alone or keeping a distance from people or events, sometimes for the better. Sometimes not.

10 - Wheel of Fortune - The Carousel - Round and round we go, and sometimes we win the games that come with the ride, sometimes we lose.

11 - Justice - The Frog Brothers - The thing about justice is that it is very subjective. But if you think of some other ways this can be interpreted, such as getting consequences, and finding the truth, then maybe you can see why I chose Edgar and Alan here.

12 - The Hanged Man - Marko/Paul/Dwayne. This card is about staying the same, stagnation, being held in a transitional state. So like, being a vampire who can never grow up. I’m sure you see where I’m going with this. Plus, their little upside-down selves would go perfectly on this card.

13 - Death - Welcome to Santa Carla (Murder Capital of the World) - This card is rarely about actual death/dying. It’s transformation - the end of one thing and the beginning of another. Santa Carla is a nexus of change and beginnings/endings for all the characters as a result of the events of the movie.

14 - Temperance - Star - It’s about balance; too much of anything being bad for you, etc. Star manages to avoid killing and has done for some time, while Michael was a vampire for like half a day and nearly ate his own brother. Lol.

15 - The Devil - The Wine Bottle - It’s a card about worldly desires, sexuality, addiction, hedonism… All things inherent to vampirism.

(I was originally going to do David here, and he would’ve worked. The traditional image is of a Baphomet-style figure surrounded by a man and woman in chains…but the chains look like they would come off easily, if only they stoppes to remove them. Picture David in his wheelchair, smirking, with Star and Michael to either side.)

16 - The Tower - Edgar (climbing the ladder to the sleeping vampires) - major upheaval. Catastrophe. Shit is about to hit the fan.

17 - The Star - Star - Her name is actually not the reason she was chosen haha. This card is about hope, overcoming adversity and finding contentment. Star never gave up on becoming human again, and she was certainly content at the end of the movie.

18 - The Moon - Marko/Paul/Dwayne/David - Illusion. Deception. But on a more positive note, deals with intuition.

19 - The Sun - Laddie - This is a card with feel good vibes. Happy families, achievements, abundance… But on the flip side can indicate naivety and blind positivity. This card typically depicts a young child, so yeah.

20 - Judgement - Michael - Judgement differs from Justice in that it’s more like taking stock of your own circumstances. Michael is ultimately the one who has to make the choice about which half of his half-vampire nature to embrace.

Also consider he shares his name with the archangel…

21 - The World - ??? - The end of a cycle. But where there are ends there are always beginnings. Opportunity knocks, and another Fool gets ready to set off an a journey…

I couldn’t think of a character or scene that worked to express this, except maybe Max’s fiery death/the aftermath of, so I left it blank.

DAY 9 (attempt no 3)

John did not have a shift scheduled this Wednesday so after dropping off Rosie at school he took a detour over to a local farmers market before lunch to collect some fresh groceries and enjoy the mild September weather.

When he returned to Baker Street with his haul of apples, potatoes, radishes and fennel, he found Sherlock sitting crosslegged on the living room carpet surrounded by a halo of little screws, wires and other electrical parts. If that was not worrying enough on its own, then there still was the object at the centre of Sherlocks current efforts.

"Wait, is that our water kettle?"

The sad electric kettle sat right in front of the detective on the floor and seemed to be partially dismantled at the moment, with Sherlock poking at different parts of it with a dubious expression and only reluctantly raising his gaze at Johns exclamation.

"Obviously!"

"Why?"

"Something keeps going wrong with Watsons and my experiment. I investigated a few possible causes and observed that the heating plate that I used for my waterbath showed quite significant fluctuations in temperature when tracked over time. So my current reasoning is, that we might have killed the bacteria by heating them too much and that's why the experiment failed so far."

John stared down at him slack-jawed. "All of this is still about the experiment that you are doing with Rosie?"

That earned him an indignant look. "Of course! I am not going to teach her that she should just give up as soon as science gets a little bit tough. Repeating and tweaking your experiments is a fundamental part of scientific discovery! We are going to get to the bottom of this."

"So what did our kettle do to deserve this faith?"

"I am trying to get it hooked up to my contact thermometer and then use it to maintain my 42°C waterbath instead. I found someone on ResearchGate.net who did something similar when their heating block failed."

There was no use arguing with Sherlock whenever he got into this kind of singleminded focus so John decided to let him be for now.

Instead, he took care of his groceries and began preparing a cuppa for himself. He would need some tea to deal with this nonsense. It took him almost a minute of standing in front of the spot on the counter that usually housed the water kettle to realise that there was something vital missing. He groaned.

"I am sure Mrs Hudson will let us borrow her kettle for now", Sherlock noted distractedly. "If you go down now, could you bring me a cup as well?"

John shook his head in disbelief but eventually and with much grumbling he got out a second cup and stomped back into the living room, narrowly swerving around a collection of tiny screws that were almost impossible to spot on the colourful carpet.

"You are lucky that you are cute."

That stopped Sherlock in his tracks and had him staring up at John with absolute disgruntlement.

"Baby animals are cute. Most dogs are cute regardless of their age. Rosie is the rare exception of a human being genuinely cute."

"Yes, and your point is?"

"I. Am. Not. Cute!"

"Oh yes, you are adorable." John dropped a fleeting kiss onto the other mans dishevelled curls before moving towards the stairs for some well-deserved tea and 10 minutes of relative sanity in the sanctuary of Mrs Hudsons kitchen.

Troubleshooting, part 6/?

-> No Rosie this time round, but she will of course make an appearance again for the next parts. No water kettles were harmed in the writing of this chapter. I am fairly certain that what Sherlock is doing here is pretty impossible, but I am not going to let that stop me!

Random season 7 trying to round up info stuff:

We don’t have an official number of episodes. IMDb currently has titles for 6 (one of which is labeled as episode 8, so they’re doing at least that many.) Next Episode has 8 titles. The Shaftesbury website last I checked lists Hudson and Rex as having 109 episodes so that would seem to indicate there are 9 total in s7. There was an until rumour of 10 episodes which came from someone close to production, but I wonder if they cut it down to 8 or 9 due to John Reardon’s illness.

Worth noting: Every other Canadian drama series that I follow has a short season. Most of them (Murdoch Mysteries being the notable established exception, and the only one with a longer season) don’t/didn’t start until mid-season. The shorter episode order may not have been entirely due to John’s illness, but I guess we’ll see.

Interestingly, one episode on IMDb currently doesn’t have John in the cast list. I can’t see them writing him out of an episode entirely but who knows how they’re going to explain (what I’m expecting to be) Charlie’s reduced screen time.

Also noteworthy: it looks like Renley and Detective Porter are each coming back.

Chapter 2 - You Watch Star Wars?

Nobody ever liked getting up early. Well, usually. Dylan on the other hand had her alarm going off at 5:30am every morning and had been doing so since she was a freshman in high school.

Even when she didn’t have school. And even when she didn’t have work. It was in her favor on shift days though. She could easily get up, take a run, come home and shower while listening to her music, maybe squeeze in a meal and then head into work. And get there early so the shift change happened nice and smooth, the way it needed to be.

It was only her second shift, and she was ready to get back in and continue to get to know the rest of her crew. One shift is never enough time to get to know and trust an entire group of people. Granted most of the guys had taken a liking to her almost instantly.

It’s not like she’s hard to get along with and she treated them nicely. Dylan prided herself on respecting those she worked with. All of them. She’d say even if they didn’t deserve it but in reality she would be the first person to put some asshole in their place.

“Morning, Sawyer,” Kelly was the first person she saw as she went into the locker room, usually the first one in every morning anyway. She nodded her head at him with a quiet morning back as she passed, moving onto the next row.

Matt was already in front of his locker, adjusting the belt on his hips as she poked his arm, “They settle on a locker for me yet?” Dylan leaned against the edge as he smoothed his shirt out.

The man hummed, “Mhm, it is,” He gestured for her to follow, leading her to the small clump of lockers on the back wall. “This one,” Matt pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket, handing it to her, “That’s the combination.”

Dylan took it, turning away as he went back to his own locker. The locker was so bare and her stuff barely filled the shelf at the top. “Gonna have to get you some decorations or something in there,” A voice spoke up behind her as they walked past.

The new girl closed her eyes quickly to search for the name. Blonde, paramedic… Sylvie. She laughed softly, nodding, “Yeah or something,” As she spoke she pulled her shirt off, grabbing the lieutenant's shirt to pull it over her head, adjusting it into her pants.

Her goal today was to just get to know her crew. Their names were the first she memorized. Caleb Reynolds, her driver, been on the job 14 years now. Theodore Owens, 6 years under his belt but that came along with a specialty in electronics that would be of good use on half of their calls. Hudson Jacobs, only been with 51 for a couple weeks and didn’t seem to take to the new lieutenant but Dylan could deal with men not liking her. And finally, Luke Harrison, longest member on truck 80 with just under 20 years on him.

They were nice, got along. Usually secluded themselves to the round table towards the back of the common room but Dylan didn’t blame them, she was pretty wrapped up in Matt and reconnecting the first shift so they didn’t get that chance to talk more and bond.

Which was on her truly, and the only way she could think to try was to sit with them. Dylan slid into the open seat at the table, three of the four men talking about some movie as she did. “Caleb, I swear if you say that your favorite Star Wars movie is anything but Revenge of the Sith I’m walking off of this shift.” The second youngest of the group, Theo, had his hands pressed to the table as if he was ready to push himself up.

“Nothing ever beats the original, right Herrmann?”

“Oh no, don’t bring me into your stupid space war movie debates.” The older man waved him off as he walked in, instantly bee lining for the coffee pot, “Those movies are for kids and teenagers.” He shook his head.

Dylan laughed faintly before shaking her head, “Beg to differ, with how much of a classic they’ve become, they’re gonna be gold for years.” She spoke, getting the attention of at least half of the men in the room.

“You watch Star Wars?” Theo instantly questioned.

The girl nodded hesitantly, “Yeah? I was Princess Leia for Halloween when I was 10. And then I was Padme for a party once a couple years after the movies came out.” She shrugged, feeling a bit warm with all the attention on her.

By now all of the truck crews were in the room, filling out the spots. “Yeah but did you watch them, or did you just watch them because Casey over there was a fan and you were friends?” Reynolds questioned, almost accusatory.

She cocked an eyebrow up, sending a quick glance at the man he had gestured towards. “Actually, if anything I was the one that forced him to watch them.” Her tongue ran along the bottom of her mouth, feeling her leg start to bounce.

Matt nodded from his spot, “Yeah, I gave up on trying to change her mind after the third rewatch. And you’re all wrong, Empire Strikes Back is the best one.” He went back to reading his magazine as Dylan pointed at him.

“Correct.”

“Absolutely not!” The same man that started the conversation exclaimed, being cut off by Herrmann clapping his hands together.

His cup sat on the counter and he sighed, “Alright, alright, enough. Can we talk about something more important? Like Casey, what are you doing for your big ten year celebration?” He questioned the lieutenant, making Dylan tilt her head.

She turned in her chair, looking at him, “Ten years of what?” The girl herself had barely been a firefighter for ten years, maybe that’s what they meant? Would be an insane coincidence between the two.

“Mr. Matt Casey will have been a lieutenant of the Chicago fire department for ten whole years as of this upcoming Friday, so I ask again, what are you planning?” Herrmann answered, moving to clasp his hands over the man’s shoulders.

Matt laughed faintly, shaking his head, “Honestly, I wasn’t planning anything. Probably a drink at Molly’s,” He spoke with a shrug, Dylan shaking her head.

She lightly scoffed, “What? No way, that’s huge. I’ve only been a firefighter for ten years, you gotta at least have a party or something.” Dylan leaned forward, elbows to her knees. “Could do something at Molly’s? You guys do stuff like that right?”

Herrmann nodded, squeezing Matt’s shoulders, “Yes we do, that’s a great idea kid,” He spoke before going back to his coffee, “So it’s settled then, this Friday we have a get together at Molly’s for Casey.”

Dylan grinned and nodded, “Yes, it’ll be great,” She turned back to the table, only to be interrupted by the alarm going off.

Truck 80, Ambulance 61, man stuck on South Halsted.

She and her crew were up in seconds, jogging out to the firetruck. As they slipped into their gear, she glanced at the emblem on the door. A dragon. Way better than the giraffe she was used to. They were cool animals but on the side of a firetruck? Lame.

It was a short ride to the call, and if it hadn’t been for the hoard of onlookers, Caleb probably would have driven right past it. The cover to the sewer was open and from what Dylan could see, someone was down there.

At least that’s what she assumed when she saw everyone looking down the hole. And that was confirmed as she kneeled down as Luke pushed the audience back. “Hey there, you okay? What’s your name?” She asked, the man standing, looking up at her.

“Adam, I’m okay, I can’t get back up, the ladder broke.” He sighed, holding something in his hand.

The girl nodded, “Alright, Hudson grab me the 10 foot.” She called out to the boy before moving to lay on her stomach, getting a better look at him. “Whatcha got there Adam?”

He held his hand up, a small kitten in it, “I heard meowing, so I thought I’d come and get him.” There was slight embarrassment in his voice, Dylan smiling lightly.

“Think that might’ve been a job for animal control,” She commented before standing up as the ladder was handed to her. “Okay watch out, I’m dropping the ladder down, Theo come hold the other side.”

Dylan climbed down the ladder as they held it steady, patting the man’s shoulder, “Alright, you head up first, I’ll be right behind you. Nothing hurts or is broken right?” As he shook his head he started his way up, kitten to his chest.

She would have offered to carry it but the way he was clutching it almost felt like he wouldn’t have let go even if he was being forced to.

Once on the top side of the Chicago street, Dylan placed the manhole cover back on, turning to the man as he was walked over to the gurney. Just a formality that he really was as okay as he said.

“Really nice what you did but next time call someone that can rescue them,” She patted his shoulder before pulling the crew back in to head to the firehouse once again.

Almost as soon as they were back there, another debate was started amongst the guys. “Lieutenant, please tell Caleb that animal crackers are an iconic American snack and way better than teddy grahams.” Theo jogged to walk next to her as they went into the common room.

Dylan scrunched her nose up, absentmindedly being drawn to the spot next to Matt who was not eating a plate of the breakfast Stella had made.

“I don’t think I could do that,” She commented, crossing her feet under the table, “Teddy Grahams are way better,” Otis nodded from his spot across from her.

“Agreed, but Cheez-its are better than both.” He added into the conversation, getting a hum of agreement from both Dylan and Matt. How they managed to continuously have random discussions like these was beyond the lieutenant’s knowledge.

He usually stayed out of it and let them discuss on their own. Rather than be brought into the fight. “This is the second time you’ve disagreed today, is this usual?” She glanced between Matt, Otis, and her other men.

“Yes. Yes it is,” Mouch commented from his spot on the couch, annoyance dripping from his words. Understandably, how long can you listen to grown men argue about the smallest little thing before it becomes super annoying?

There was a decent section of the day where nothing really happened. Dylan retreated to her bed to draw once she finished up her incident report for the morning’s call and was only interrupted once by Stella and Gabby who sat on the bed across from her.

“So, after shift do you want to come to Molly’s? We go pretty much every night, it’s a nice place, I’m sure Herrmann already told you about it,” Gabby was the first to talk, a light laugh coming from her.

If there was one thing Christopher Herrmann was going to do, it was promote his bar to every new person he could. Candidates and new members of the house included. Being a lieutenant didn’t stop that.

Dylan nodded, “That he did, I was going to but I’ve been trying to settle back in at home before spending my nights out,” She explained, pencil still scratching across the paper.

Stella raised an eyebrow, “Soo.. is that a no?” She questioned, hoping it wasn’t. As soon as Dylan shook her head, Stella smiled, “So It's a yes?”

“Yeah, sure. That sounds fun,” The hazel eyed girl finally looked up, smiling lightly herself. It was nice to have other people around that weren’t men. Not that the men of the house weren’t great, Otis had already pulled her into a couple games of Catan all in her first shift which she didn’t exactly understand but it was fun regardless.

And Mouch even let her pick a movie when she saw that they were playing The Wizard of Oz on tv. But having other girls around just felt like a continuous pat on the shoulder and a sign that it would be alright. That 51 was going to be home.

Granted she already knew that when she first saw Matt, but it was solidified. And after the weird conversations they’d had today, and that she’d been a part of, it was like siblings arguing. Family.

Truck 80, engine 51, ambulance 61, structure fire 1601 South Canal.

Gabby and Dylan jumped up quickly, Stella grabbing the notebook that nearly fell off the bed as they rushed off. Ambo was out of the bay first, Truck and engine not far behind.

“I know that address, it’s that self storage place. My mom used to rent there. It’s a maze in there.” Hudson spoke up from the back, Dylan glancing at him. Slightly she nodded.

“You know your way around at all?” Her question was met with the vaguest nod. Even if he did, the building being as engulfed as it was as they got there was going to be trouble.

Dylan was the first one out, and the first to the scene. A man in ratty jeans ran up to her, grabbing her arm. “Please, you gotta help, there’s still people inside.” He spoke quickly, the girl nodding in response.

“Hey, hey, breathe. We’re gonna get in there, what’s your name?”

“Kevin.”

Dylan smiles softly, nodding again, “Alright Kevin, my team and I are going to head in. How many people are still inside?” The man paused, having no idea. As soon as she realized that she patted his shoulder. “No problem, we’re gonna check the whole building.”

“Okay, Caleb, you, me and Theo are gonna take the bottom two floors and the basement. Luke and Hudson, take the next two. Stay together.” She directed as engine hopped out of their own truck.

“Where do you want us Sawyer?” Herrmann questioned, quickly looking over the building. She bit her lip slightly before facing him.

“Head up to the top floor for a quick search, and get a hose line in as soon as possible. They have cardboard and crap everywhere.” She directed before heading to the entrance with her own men.

As soon as their masks were on she faced them, “Alright, stick together and if you get lost, follow a wall out.” She spoke firmly before entering, instantly feeling the warmth of the flames.

As the lieutenant, Dylan made sure to lead the way in. One of the other things firefighters learn is first one in, last one out. And she held that rule to her heart at all times. The girl would always be the first in, and make sure her team was out before she was.

Circling the floor, a bunch of boxes and paper on fire, she called out, hoping that anybody that would hear would respond or come into view. You would be surprised how many people either don’t know regular fire safety precautions and how many forget all their knowledge the second they’re thrown into the real deal.

“Fire department, call out!” Dylan yelled, “I’m gonna keep going straight, you two check that hallway.” She directed, splitting from the two before calling out again. The rooms on her end were clear so she turned back, seeing the way the hallway had fully filled with smoke. “Jesus.”

Her eyes went to the vague light of the exit sign at the end of the hall, leading her towards the direction the others had gone, “Alright, it’s clear on my end, Reynolds, Owens, how are things down there?” Dylan turned into her radio, getting static. “Reynolds, Owens, you copy?”

Slight panic was starting to build before she saw them appear out of the cloud of smoke, each holding someone up. “Okay, come on,” Dylan gestured for them to walk ahead, glancing around on the way up before following them out.

Once the first two people were situated, they went back in, doing the same as the basement floor. The girl went to go into a room when she noticed the smoke filling the hallways change colors, her heart dropping, “Alright, I’m calling the search. Everyone out.” She radioed in, glancing down the hall and seeing a body slumped against the end.

Instantly she went to step in that direction, the wooden floor creaking underneath her foot. There was no way it was going to hold, and she knew that. Her youngest member and still pretty new candidate, went to pass her, only being stopped when she grabbed his shoulder, “No, come on, we have to go.” She spoke, grabbing her guys and letting them lead back out.

Outside there was a better view of the building, the smoke turning brown. “Why did you do that? There was a guy at the end of the hall. We just needed to get water on the hallway to get him out,” Hudson snapped, tossing his helmet to the ground.

“There was no way to get to him and the floor was giving out. We had to get out of there.” Dylan spoke calmly, tucking her own helmet under her arm. Of course she wanted to go on, get the man out. But they would have needed to get water up the stairs, add more weight to the already weak floor which could’ve made it give out.

He shook his head, “What kind of lieutenant just gives up? Lieutenant Loomis would have kept going.” His words did nothing but make Dylan’s blood boil, instead of snapping at him (like she really wanted to do), she just sighed, breathing out through her nose.

Slowly, she looked back at the building, “Look. If we had tried. One of us would have ended up dying in the process. Our job is to save people, but not by killing ourselves in the process. You think I didn’t want to go down there? If we had more time I would have. So drop it.” She gave him a stern look, biting at her cheek.

There was no way. No way. As they drove back she kept repeating it in her mind over and over, more so to convince herself rather than anything.

As truck 80 finished pulling in, 81 started to, the firefighters all piling out when both vehicles were properly parked. Hudson was the first out of the opposite side of the truck, closer to 81, his door slamming behind him.

Dylan sighed, hopping out and dropping her gear as Matt came around the front of the vehicle, “All good?” He questioned, looking in the direction the boy had gone. She clenched her jaw, shrugging slightly.

“Honestly, not sure.” She mumbled, brushing past him. What she wanted to do was lay down in her bed and just let her eyes take a rest. But the adrenaline and truthfully, borderline anger that still coursed through her had other plans so instead she just went to the small area that had previously been designated as the ‘workout area’ aka two sets of weights and a punching bag.

Maybe it was a bit concerning to her that this was only the second call on her second shift and she already had the gloves on so she could punch something. Over one singular comment. One.

She threw a few punches at the stagnant object, face pulled into a grimace as she did. “Hey Capp, that is what’s gonna happen if you keep eating my M&M’s.” Dylan heard Tony comment, glancing back at him.

Shaking her head she turned back to what she was doing, only stopping when her chest was heaving. Silently, and without looking at the squad members, Dylan went inside. The girl beelined to the locker room, jumping slightly as she rounded the corner to get to her own locker. “Sorry-, Oh god, sorry.”

Her hand went up to her eyes as she stepped past Matt, turning her back to him. “DJ, it’s not like you’ve never seen me shirtless before,” He shook his head as she opened her locker door, using it as a shield from the other lieutenant.

“Yeah, but that was never when you only had a towel on.” She shook her head, scrunching her nose up as she dug out her change of clothes. Matt’s laugh carried down the row of lockers as he shrugged.

“Still, not much of a difference.” He grabbed his clothes, pulling them on, “Alright drama queen, I’m decent if you dare to look at me,” His tone warm as he smiled at her once she looked at him.

“Oh shut up,” She rolled her eyes, “I’m gonna shower.”

“Hey wait, are you good? Jacobs seemed pretty heated when he got out of the truck earlier,” Matt questioned, walking over to her and leaning against the opposite row of lockers. He’d had his fair share of firefighters giving him hell and had seen it happen with others.

Not to mention the little length he’d had on the job it wouldn’t surprise him if he’d done something stupid. “I’m good, just,” Dylan paused, “We couldn’t save this guy on that call. He was too far into the building and we had to pull back. It wasn’t safe. And Hudson just, didn’t take that well. Said Loomis would have done it.”

Matt shook his head slightly, “I wasn’t there but I bet you made the right call.” He spoke, crossing his arms over his chest. “Why couldn’t you? Just curious.” Dylan bit at her lip, worried that he would just end up confirming that they could have gone.

“The floor was weak, moved under my feet and the fire completely cut off the hall. Only way in would have been to get water up there.”

“Which would have made the floor give out from the extra weight. You made the right call.” He finished her thought, automatically connecting the dots as if he had been there. Slowly she nodded, a light smile on her face.

It was nice to hear him say that rather than coming after her for making the wrong one. “Thanks, Matt.” Dylan sighed, leaning her head back against the locker. “I don’t know why it made me so mad. I mean I know I was right so I just don’t get it.”

The man leaned forward, putting his hand on her arm, “It’s your second shift. You’re probably doubting yourself, feeling guilty you didn’t get him. It’s normal. And I will tell you that you’re doing a good job as long as I need to.” He squeezed slightly, making Dylan laugh softly.

“That was such a sappy thing to say Matt Casey,” She shook her head before looking up at him, “Anyway, you put any thought into your big party?” The girl took his open side as an invitation to poke it, his hand dropping from her arm.

With a pointed glare he shook his head, “Not really, it really isn’t the big deal you guys are making it out to be,” He replied, his arms now covering himself so she had nowhere else to poke him.

“Yes it is! Ten years Matt, c’mon, is your favorite color still green?”

“Yeah.”

“Then we’ll get like, green decorations and shit, play the music you like. It’ll be fun, and you’ll love it and it’ll be a great night.” She glanced down at the clothes she still had in her arms. “Anyway, I have to go shower cause I absolutely destroyed that punching bag out there.”

She gave Matt’s arm a light pat before dipping around to the showers, smiling like a damn idiot to herself.
