I drove by the steelworks in Port Talbot yesterday and it was a dramatic sight- I hadn’t realised how big the steelworks are. The closing will cut around 2800 jobs & likely lead Port Talbot down the route of most post industrial towns. I live in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, with its broken mills & forgotten history - a town designed to feed industry does not easily thrive without it. I feel for this town today; another victim of a disorganised world.
And I understand that the environment must be protected, climate change is a real and serious issue, but surely not at the expense of the people it protects? There are bigger, meaner engines of destruction & disease that go unnoticed. Everything feels decidedly medieval at the moment - like they don’t stand on the shoulders of giants, they stand on our backs.

Body Shop to shut 75 stores and cut hundreds of jobs

BBC News
The Body Shop will close 75 shops in the UK over the coming weeks and cut 489 jobs, according to the firm overseeing its restructuring.
It means that, combined with cost-cutting at the company’s head office, between 750 and 800 people will be made redundant.
However, The Body Shop will keep 116 UK stores open.
The UK arm of the global beauty chain was put into administration earlier this month.
Shops will be closed over the next four to six weeks. FRP Advisory, which is managing the restructuring, said it would “support all impacted staff with claims to the Redundancy Payments Service”.
“In taking swift action to right-size The Body Shop UK store portfolio, we have stabilised the business,” said FRP Advisory’s Tony Wright.
“We remain fully focused on exploring all options to take the business forward.”
The Body Shop was a trailblazer – what went wrong?
The Body Shop was founded in Brighton in 1976 by the late Dame Anita Roddick who opened a single shop in the seaside town. Known for its natural beauty products and its stance against testing on animals, it expanded rapidly in the following years.
Dame Anita and her husband Gordon sold the business to French beauty giant L’Oreal in 2006, much to the chagrin of some loyal followers who viewed the French beauty giant’s business at odds with The Body Shop’s ethos.
Since then, The Body Shop has changed hands twice, most recently to private equity firm Aurelius in late 2023. Within weeks, it decided to place the UK arm in administration following poor sales over Christmas and January.
Wildly popular in the 1980s and 1990s, The Body Shop appeared to fall out of fashion as competitors arrived in the natural beauty market including Lush and Rituals.

Super League Half-Term Report: Leeds, St Helens, Warrington, Hull and More!
Super League Half-Term Report: Grading Leeds Rhinos, St Helens, Warrington Wolves, Hull FC and Others
The Super League Season So Far: A Brief Overview
The Super League season began on March 25th and has been a rollercoaster ride for rugby league fans. The league features 12 teams who play each other twice in the regular season. Each team plays a total of 22 games with the top six teams qualifying for the playoffs. The first half of the season has seen some fantastic performances, nail-biting finishes, and plenty of drama. There have been upsets as well as dominant displays from some of the league's top teams. One standout feature of this year's competition is how competitive it is. No team has managed to dominate the league so far, making it one of the most unpredictable seasons in recent memory.
The Importance of The Half-Term Report
With over half the season played, it's time to evaluate how each team has fared so far and assess their chances for success in the remainder of the competition. A half-term report allows us to take stock of what we've seen thus far and provides an excellent opportunity to predict future outcomes based on past performances. The report is crucial for coaches, players, fans, and pundits alike as they look back at their team's progress from preseason expectations to present-day reality. It also helps us appreciate individual player performances that may not have received their due credit during match reports or analyses. In short, it gives rugby fans an all-encompassing view of how things stand thus far in Super League.
Explanation Of The Grading System
Each team will receive a grade based on their overall performance during this year's competition so far. We will look at factors such as players' form and fitness, team strategy and tactics, and the overall consistency of their performances. Teams will be graded using a standard A to F grading system. This grading system allows us to provide an accurate assessment of each team's performance and gives fans a clear idea of where each team stands in terms of expectations for the remainder of the season. The grading system is not meant to be harsh or overly critical but rather an honest evaluation of how each team has performed so far. Ultimately, it serves as both a reflection on what has been, as well as guidance on what needs to improve moving forward.
Conclusion: A Preview Of What To Expect
As we approach the midway point in this year's competition, there is still much to look forward to. With playoffs looming large on the horizon, every game becomes more crucial than ever before. In the coming sections of this article, we'll take a closer look at some teams' performances thus far this season - paying particular attention to Leeds Rhinos, St Helens, Warrington Wolves, Hull FC and others - using our grading system. So buckle up rugby fans; we're in for an exciting ride!
Leeds Rhinos
Their Season So Far: A Rollercoaster Ride
The Leeds Rhinos have had a difficult first half of the 2021 Super League season. After finishing in fifth place last season, they came into the new campaign with high hopes of challenging for the title. However, they have struggled to find consistency and currently sit in ninth place, outside of the playoff places. Their season started well with a convincing win over Wakefield Trinity in round one, but things quickly turned sour as they suffered heavy defeats to Hull FC and St Helens in their next two games. They bounced back with wins over Salford Red Devils and Huddersfield Giants, but then suffered another heavy defeat to Wigan Warriors. They have continued this inconsistent form throughout the season so far, winning some games convincingly while losing others by large margins. One notable positive has been their impressive defence; they have conceded fewer points than any other team outside of the top four. Read more

Explore Huddersfield like never before!
Explore Huddersfield
If you are not from Huddersfield, you may not know about the incredible places that the town has to offer for travel enthusiasts. Situated halfway between Leeds and Manchester, it has been the place of the industrial revolution and is known for being the birthplace of the Rugby League, Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and the international film star, James Mason. Now that you have learnt some fascinating facts about Huddersfield, let’s explore Huddersfield in the Fortune Hotel way:
History
Huddersfield Railway Station
The history of Huddersfield Railway Station, a Grade I listed building, dates to the 1850s. The station was described by the famous English poet, writer, and broadcaster, Sir John Betjeman as ‘the most splendid station façade in England’. It is situated in St Georges Square, which won the Europa Nostra award for European architecture. In 2014, English Heritage, a registered charity that manages the National Heritage Collection put the station in the list of “the 10 Greatest English Railway Stations”. The statue of Harold Wilson who served as the UK’s Prime Minister twice graces the award-winning station.
Sports
Birthplace of Rugby League
Huddersfield is the birthplace of the Rugby League, which was founded in 1895. The history goes back to 29 August 1895 when 21 clubs met at the George Hotel, Huddersfield and agreed on a breakaway from the Rugby Football Union to establish the Rugby League. The local Rugby League team is known as the ‘Huddersfield Giants’ which plays in the European Super League. A plaque outside the George Hotel is situated to remember the meeting which created the sport of rugby league. The hotel is now set to become the national museum, which will tell the wonderful story of a sport that remains important to the communities.
Outdoors
Greenhead Park
Greenhead Park is a world away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. It is the largest park in Huddersfield and the list of attractions includes a skate park, bowling greens, tennis courts, miniature steam railway, rides, play areas, paddling pool, horse and carriage rides, conservatory, and much more. Out of five lakes in the park, Ornamental Lake is the largest one which was recently redesigned to attract wildlife. It has two refreshment areas, a cafe in the park by the tennis courts and a newer park located behind the conservatory where customers can dine outdoors or in the conservatory.
Shopping
Town Centre
Huddersfield is known for its large and diverse retail shopping area enclosed within the town’s ring road. The town centre is home to several national high street retailers and chain stores. You can go on a shopping spree to three shopping areas including Kingsgate, The Packhorse Precinct and The Piazza Centre. The Piazza offers an outdoor shopping mall near the public library, with a grassed area, used for relaxation and events throughout the year. Near to the centre, Market Arcade is a covered market hall with listed building status due to its distinctive roof formed by hyperbolic paraboloids. Also, there is an open market located next to Tesco on the opposite side of the town centre.
Entertainment
The John Smith’s Stadium
The John Smith’s Stadium is a multi-use sports stadium with a gym, swimming, spa, and sporting classes facilities. The stadium is home to Huddersfield Giants and Huddersfield Town football team. Among other entertainment options, you can also enjoy dance, drama, comedy, music and exhibitions at The Lawrence Batley Theatre. You can also explore many pubs, restaurants and nightclubs, including Tokyo which occupies the former Huddersfield County Court, a 19th-century Grade II listed building. Don’t forget to visit the oldest pub, the Parish (formerly the Fleece Inn), which has been trading since 1720.
