Topa Topa Huckster Double IPA (Picked up at Windmill Farms). A 4 of 4. Bright tropical fruit and white wine-like notes dominate in the nose, and this is a big fruity presence in the body, too. You can tell this is big and robust with a bigger malt presence and alcohol/bitterness towards the finish. A relatively non-standard DIPA profile, and quite enjoyable.

Todays Word Of The Day is: Shill
Shill originates from early 1900s carnival slang in the United States. The word describes someone who pretends to support something to trick others.

reading about edmund curll, an important figure in erotic literature, and didn't know i was about to stumble across the most chaotic wikipedia page ever... i love historical literary drama
Tumblr media Tumblr media
critics have always been the same
Tumblr media
and of course where there is 1700s literary drama, alexander pope is always involved. no wonder byron idolized him and was involved in a seven-year long public debate concerning him... honoring him the way he'd like to be remembered (see: the pope-bowles controversy). don juan rly was a tribute to him. we need a series about the restoration era (behn/wilmot/dryden/etc) & of course the young romantics (byron/shelleys/keats/etc) and now we also need the augustan era (pope/montagu/now curll, etc.). someone please pplease please let me do an anthology series (in the vein of ahs or black mirror) about literary communities throughout history already!

cartoonish levels of opportunistic behavior. manipulating every situation to work in his favor like a sitcom character...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the most informative thing i've learned from edmund curll's wiki page is that in the 1700s, the name of the U.S. state "maryland" inspired a whole genre of erotica novels based on puns of the idea of a "[woman's name]-land," as evidenced by "bettyland." staples of the genre included colonization as a metaphor for patriarchal sexual conquest, & erotic descriptions of the female body which borrow from descriptions of natural landscape. much to think about re: postcolonial feminism - this quite literally proves the idea that colonization is inherently patriarchal

Hi Lucy (:
Your oxventure deadlands playlist made me wonder this: Do you have any silly (or just in general) headcanons for the oxventure deadlands posse that you'd like to share?
ooo I had to think about this for a little bit but here's a few things :) I don't think any of these ended up being silly whoops.
Delacy has a baby sister. Like really really little, she wasn't even walking yet when he left. It took a while for him to realize she isn't going to remember him.
Garnet's dad wasn't necessarily a huckster, but he did get messed up in some supernatural business. Garnet got her abilities when she challenged a demon trying to hurt her dad to a card game.
Edie was engaged once. She broke it off. He begged her to stay, but in her bones she just knew it wasn't the right decision.
Nate's wife died of tuberculosis. Nate always wanted kids, but she couldn't have them. He always told her he was just fine with their little two person family, but he always wondered what life would have been like if they'd been parents.
Delacy paid for Rooster with money and items stolen from his parents. When told Garnet to find his family and apologize if he died in the quick draw competition, he was talking about running away, but also about stealing from them.
Silas was mentored by a particular sheriff who became a father figure to him. The last straw for him before he headed out on his own was finding out this sheriff was shaking down people already living in poverty for protection money.

truly no one has ever wanted to be in a cult more than john lennon wanted to be in a cult. frankly astonishing he was never really in one considering he might have been the most Ideal Cult Mark in the History of the World.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/27/climate/plastic-industry-internal-documents.html
Paid influencers on TikTok. An infomercial hosted by Dennis Quaid. Pushback against the Olympics’ single-use plastic ban.
A trove of documents leaked from an influential industry group shows how some of the world’s largest petrochemical and plastics companies have been waging a campaign to push back against a “tide of anti-plastic sentiment” — especially among young people concerned about the environment.
The industry group, the National Association for PET Container Resources, or NAPCOR, worked to deliberately obscure its connection to the campaign and make its content “authentic and from the creators’ viewpoints,” the documents show.
PET stands for polyethylene terephthalate, the plastic used to make single-use soda bottles and clamshell containers.
The corporate strategizing laid out in the documents provides a behind-the-scenes look at a battle being waged over the future of plastic. Nations are gathering in Busan, South Korea this week to hammer out details of a global plastic treaty that might tackle pollution at its source, by limiting its production — an approach that the plastic industry has vehemently opposed.

who is joseph smith?
Dude who founded the Church of Latter Day Saints, AKA Mormonism. He claimed he'd been visited by an angel, who gave him these golden plates containing additional Bible books to translate. The "translated" books were literary vomit, and the take on Christianity he came up with was really, really racist.

my personal take on liu kang's decisions regarding shang tsung:
i do think shang tsung is an incredibly unreliable narrator about his own past (if geras telling him not to lie about 'enduring squalor as a child' attests to anything). i also know he's entirely responsible for being such a slimy prick.
in my humble opinionnnn, liu kang had a personal pitfall with shang tsung, and i think some of his decisions for both sorcerers was simply because he never wanted to see or hear of either of them again. is that their fault, no, but i find it still fair.
i like the idea better that the characters being out of his hands after his placement of them goes deeper than mk1. shang tsung references sindel's imperialism a few times. intros mention she is not welcome where he was raised, and further he seems to know an extent of cruelty that either others are unaware of or simply aren't on the receiving end of.
and like... let's be honest, any target of hers or general shao's through extention must have gone through a lot. if it isn't direct, it's generational — something that liu kang has less and less control of over time, as is evident with the lin kuei.
maybe shang tsung is hiding something deeper than obscurity or poverty, but can't be damned to say it, because it means admitting others have impacted him and his environment in ways that make him uncomfortable. maybe his community being on the "losing side" of the wars carries more than he (or mk1 in general) lets on.
