Nova nosographia ophthalmica, John Taylor, 1766
"John Taylor, commonly known as the “Chevalier” was a notorious itinerant oculist. He studied under Cheselden and spent most of his life traveling throughout Europe and even into Asia, couching cataracts (often with disastrous results) and selling his miraculous ointments and eye washes. Chevalier Taylor’s false and bombastic claims, his surgical blunders, and his shameless pursuit of money earned him the loathing of honest ophthalmologists."

Topa Topa Huckster Double IPA (Picked up at Windmill Farms). A 4 of 4. Bright tropical fruit and white wine-like notes dominate in the nose, and this is a big fruity presence in the body, too. You can tell this is big and robust with a bigger malt presence and alcohol/bitterness towards the finish. A relatively non-standard DIPA profile, and quite enjoyable.

truly no one has ever wanted to be in a cult more than john lennon wanted to be in a cult. frankly astonishing he was never really in one considering he might have been the most Ideal Cult Mark in the History of the World.

reading about edmund curll, an important figure in erotic literature, and didn't know i was about to stumble across the most chaotic wikipedia page ever... i love historical literary drama
Tumblr media Tumblr media
critics have always been the same
Tumblr media
and of course where there is 1700s literary drama, alexander pope is always involved. no wonder byron idolized him and was involved in a seven-year long public debate concerning him... honoring him the way he'd like to be remembered (see: the pope-bowles controversy). don juan rly was a tribute to him. we need a series about the restoration era (behn/wilmot/dryden/etc) & of course the young romantics (byron/shelleys/keats/etc) and now we also need the augustan era (pope/montagu/now curll, etc.). someone please pplease please let me do an anthology series (in the vein of ahs or black mirror) about literary communities throughout history already!

cartoonish levels of opportunistic behavior. manipulating every situation to work in his favor like a sitcom character...

the most informative thing i've learned from edmund curll's wiki page is that in the 1700s, the name of the U.S. state "maryland" inspired a whole genre of erotica novels based on puns of the idea of a "[woman's name]-land," as evidenced by "bettyland." staples of the genre included colonization as a metaphor for patriarchal sexual conquest, & erotic descriptions of the female body which borrow from descriptions of natural landscape. much to think about re: postcolonial feminism - this quite literally proves the idea that colonization is inherently patriarchal

who is joseph smith?
Dude who founded the Church of Latter Day Saints, AKA Mormonism. He claimed he'd been visited by an angel, who gave him these golden plates containing additional Bible books to translate. The "translated" books were literary vomit, and the take on Christianity he came up with was really, really racist.

my personal take on liu kang's decisions regarding shang tsung:
i do think shang tsung is an incredibly unreliable narrator about his own past (if geras telling him not to lie about 'enduring squalor as a child' attests to anything). i also know he's entirely responsible for being such a slimy prick.
in my humble opinionnnn, liu kang had a personal pitfall with shang tsung, and i think some of his decisions for both sorcerers was simply because he never wanted to see or hear of either of them again. is that their fault, no, but i find it still fair.
i like the idea better that the characters being out of his hands after his placement of them goes deeper than mk1. shang tsung references sindel's imperialism a few times. intros mention she is not welcome where he was raised, and further he seems to know an extent of cruelty that either others are unaware of or simply aren't on the receiving end of.
and like... let's be honest, any target of hers or general shao's through extention must have gone through a lot. if it isn't direct, it's generational — something that liu kang has less and less control of over time, as is evident with the lin kuei.
maybe shang tsung is hiding something deeper than obscurity or poverty, but can't be damned to say it, because it means admitting others have impacted him and his environment in ways that make him uncomfortable. maybe his community being on the "losing side" of the wars carries more than he (or mk1 in general) lets on.

On the subject of that last reblog, we've got a lot of psychics here in Striaton, and I don't travel very much. So I guess I never fully realized that full-blown psychic hate was a thing. I've seen around 3 separate anti-psychic weirdos on this site just this month. I dunno. I must be some kinda shut-in to have not noticed it much until recently...
