MtG: Canon Dinobots Canon Dinobots Canon Dinobots
Friends, family, cohort, probably not Corey and Clae, I seek to present to you this day a problem we have present in Magic: The Gathering. I speak of the dread sin that is homophobia, an inadequacy in the performance or representation of commanders that can possibly helm a casual commander deck built around the sapphic relationship of Huatli x Saheeli which we normally refer to in its abbreviated form as dinobots.
Dinobots was confirmed as a ‘true’ ship in the narrative – in that the two characters got their smooch on – in a pride month secret lair drop, specifically showing us on this printing of Heartbeat of Spring.
Wizards have taken a fan favourite ship, which is to say, I liked it, and made it part of the ongoing story, going forward. That rules! And then they have failed to give us either a team-up card that represents the girlfriends hanging out and fighting to save their (shared) homes, and there’s no useful commander card to, thematically and mechanically, command a deck that can mesh together these characters’ story.
First of all, here’s a cool detail about Scryfall: You can search for subjects in the art. For example, you can search for any cards whose art depicts Saheeli or Huatli. This yields 27 cards, which presents something of a problem. If you were to take those 27 cards and jam them into one commander deck, you’d immediately run into a problem of colour identity.
A commander deck needs a commander, a single legendary creature card (or other, but details aside for now) that servers to gives the deck its distinct character. Every card in the deck needs to match the colour identity of this commander, which is to say, the colours of that card’s mana cost and the mana costs of abilities in non-reminder text on the card. Charmed Pendant has blue and black in its text box, but it’s in reminder text, so that doesn’t matter. Any extort card, like Basilica Screecher has a white and black mana symbol in its reminder text, but not in the rules text of the card, so it’s okay, it doesn’t require you to run a white-black deck.
The problem for Dinobots is that Saheeli is very consistently red and blue cards, that is absolutely what she is. Whatever Saheeli’s vibe is, she thinks she can solve it by being creative and intelligent, and of course she’s right, because she’s great. Meanwhile, Huatli has had a bit of a time bouncing around between elements of her faction and her relationship to her culture and her faith, which means she’s been white-red, white-green, and as she is now, white-red-green. Which means that any deck that wants to command these cards needs to cover all four non-black colours. For that, there are four possible commanders, none of them feel properly appropriate. For example, there’s Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis, who yes, it’s great to have a pair of great big gay kings of colour heading up your deck, but they’re very much not these two. What’s more, their deck is an iconic example of Group Hug, a deck that can be bountiful in what it gives to all players… and the Huatli-Saheelie core of cards dont’ really hold that idea together! And that’s just leaving Aragorn and the Somethingth Doctor (don’t care about these) and an Omnath.
And like
I get it.
Omnath is a jellybean and obviously, sapphics love jellybeans. Wait, is that actually vulgar? It’s not meant to be. Anyway.
There’s the option of partner commanders. Problem here is that this pulls you into combinations with unhinged names like Bruse-Thrasios, or Elmar-Hargilde, or Kraum-Sidar, and these are both very silly things but also these are all cards that are useful for spreading your options around in your deck. You get a lot of colours, a lot of things your deck can work with, and it’s no great surprise that these colours tend to be powerful stuff that aren’t necessarily coherent to a theme.
Do not speak to me of Doctor’s Companion, we have enough homophobic material at work here.
One option to configure this deck is Morphoron. If you choose human, Morophon can head up a deck that runs Huatli and Saheeli in their incarnations that work best, and they both even have a human creature form for each one — Huatli, Poet of Unit and Saheeli, the Sun's Brilliance. Huatli makes tokens, Saheeli creates tokens, there’s something to be said there for the pair. What’s more, Huatli advances your mana, Saheeli can spend mana to make you more stuff that can also advance your mana, and then Huatli sets up a big king hit at the end.
That’s cool, that works!
But also Morophon is the GURPS of commanders! Morophon is a commander who literally exists do everything in the most boring, basic way of its type. It is a squirrel commander, a merfolk commander, a beast commander, a dinosaur commander and all sorts of other things. When your deck relies on Morophon to hold its theme together it’s admitting your best colour matching option is taupe.
A version that eschews the green of Huatli (even though that is where her best cards show up, and has all the dinosaur support she wants), there’s [icon]Akim, the Soaring Wind[/icon], which could head a deck full of Saheeli and Huatli cards that create servo tokens, or dinosaur tokens, and then add birds to the mix. Which, you know, I mean I guess Akim is their Stalwart Ally?
This is a problem. A problem with a solution. A problem with a solution that Wizards can make happen.
That is, we need a team-up card between the two. We need a single-card team-up card that represents Huatli and Saheeli together, either in Temur colours (blue, red, and green) or in Jeskai (blue, red, and white). What’s more, thanks to Poetic Ingenuity, there’s an existing overlap mechanic between the two; dinosaurs making treasures, and artifacts making dinosaurs. If this space gets explored with a team-up card, then there’s room to start putting these cards together into a deck in a way that patches the disparate mechanics of the characters. For example, Saheeli, Sublime Artificer is a card that could turn, say, a servo token into a copy of something big and beefy.
But if we’re getting these characters on a card, surely they should be able to use the Heartbeat of Spring that shows them getting together!!
Anyway, thank you for coming to my TED talk, I don’t have a good conclusion. Sorry, Fox.
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!

MTG Planeswalker Soulmate AU
@stormconduit Full outline of the soulmate AU per plane including some walkers from unknown planes
EDIT: Forgot to put soulmate method initially lol
AU where soulmates are a thing, but the method of finding your soulmate changes depending on the plane.
Methods are one sided when your soulmate is on a different plane.
Ex A Dominarian would have the name of their Ravnican Soulmate, but the Ravnican would not have their name and would instead get their skills.
When on the same plane, methods become mutual.
Ex: If the Dominarian and Ravnican were on the same plane, the Ravnican would develop the Dominarian’s name (in addition to having their skills) and the Dominarian would develop the Ravnican’s skills (in addition to having their name).
Alara: Ajani/Tezzeret
The heartbeat of your soulmate is on your wrist (similar to the line on a heart monitor)
When we go back to Theros (and Elspeth probably comes back) Ajani sees the heartbeat on his wrist start back up
Amonkhet: Samut
Soulmates cannot lie to eachother
I liked the idea of Djeru's conflict between knowing Samut couldn't lie to him, but also refusing to accept everything he knows is wrong
Dominaria: Urza/Karn/Bolas/Ugin/Venser/Jaya/Freylise/Teferi/Windgrace/Serra/Liliana
The name of your soulmate as well as a title signifying their greatest accomplishment on your wrist
This was primarily due to the focus on history/sagas on Dominaria with accomplishments being a significant part of ones identity
I also liked the idea of Urza's soulmate (probably Yawgmoth) having "Urza, Destroyer of Worlds" on their wrist
Eldraine: Will/Rowen
You are black/white colorblind until you touch your soulmate
Idk, this is one of the ones that seemed the most fairy-taley
Fiora : Dack/Daretti
Can send a message to your soulmate after dying, essentially last words
I see Dack as having not yet met his soulmate (I think he is womanizing?) and when he dies in WAR his death message is just apologizing for never being able to meet them
Gobakhan: Teyo
Dial on wrist that shows how much danger your soul mate is in
Reason Teyo became a Shieldmage, wanted to be able to protect his soulmate
Innistrad: Sorin/Tibalt/Arlinn
Soulmates constantly reincarnate in each other’s lives
vampires constantly watching lovers grow old and die. Vampires also can't reincarnate (as Vampirism is demonic based)
St Traft made the ultimate sacrifice to keep protecting Innistrad giving up his ability to reincarnate
Ixalan: Huatli
Wherever your soulmate touches temporarily changes color
It just seemed appropriate especially for Huatli who is a poet
Kaladesh: Chandra/Dovin/Saheeli
Whenever you touch your soulmate you feel a mild spark
It seemed suitable for a plane focused on technology
Chandra probably keeps poking Nissa (in the same way children touch people after building up static)
Dovin definitely avoids touching people
Kamigawa : Tamiyo
Red string of fate
I just thought it fit the Kamigawa aesthetic well
Mirrodin: Koth
Countdown timer until death
I found it interesting if the Mirran survivors realized that no one's timer lasted longer than a particular point, when would they just give up
Plane of Mountain and Seas: Jiang/Mu Yangling
You can taste whatever your soulmate tastes
I can just see Jiang and Mowu trying to find his soulmate based on the taste of each plane's food
Ravnica: Ral/Vraska/Domri
Share talents/skills
I really needed an explanation for how Vraska and Ral know how to read
Awkward misunderstanding where Ral thinks his knowledge of law comes from Jace
Also how Jace learns to sail so quickly
Skalla: Vivien
You can give years of your life to your soulmate.
Vivien gave as much of her life as she could to try to keep her soulmate alive during the destruction of Skalla. She knows she doesn't have long left so focuses solely on revenge
Tarkir: Sarkhan/Narset
You feel a constant pull in the direction of your soulmate
Both Sarkhan and Narset are described as feeling restless constantly
Theros: Gideon/Xenagos
You feel whatever pain your soulmate does
BEING GIDEON IS SUFFERING - Gideon's invulnerability keeps him from feeling anything from his soulmate
Vryn: Jace
Soulmates share a telepathic connection
I just kind of liked the idea of Jace being lonely in his own head and his telepathy developing as a result of his lonliness
Zendikar: Nahiri/Kiora/Nissa
You can give mana and take mana from your soulmate
Basically the whole Nissa and Chandra, Channel/Fireball
I can also see Nahiri accidentally drawing too much mana and accidentally killing her soulmate during the sealing of the Eldrazi, would explain why she is so bitter
UNKNOWN PLANES
Angrath
Whatever your soulmate is thinking about you is written on your skin
Angrath constantly has reminders that his family misses him, nothing gets back to his family so they think he is dead
Elspeth
Doesn’t have a method of finding a soulmate, phyrexian corrupted planes don’t have a method (they can still have soulmates though)
Garruk
Cannot harm soulmate
Part of the reason he murders his way across the multiverse, hoping to find someone he is unable to hurt
Kaya
Soulmate tattoos
Kaya/Teysa pairing (maybe platonic) and Kaya with the Orzhov symbol tattooed on her and making everyone in Orzhov super uncomfortable
Oko
You can only be killed by your soulmate
I just saw it as a very Oko thing
Wanderer
If you don’t find your soulmate by the time you turn X years old, you die
The Wanderer essentially was given a death sentence when their spark ignited, as it would be nearly impossible to find them given the size of the multiverse
constant planeswalking is the result of trying desperately to find their soulmate

Fic title ask meme: Fire in the Sky
Okay so I have two completely opposite ideas for this.
First idea: It's a fluffy Ral x Tomik fic where Ral decides to propose via skywriting but has to basically reverse engineer that magic since the Azorius aren't gonna just give possibly the most powerful magic on Ravnica to him. Featuring a scene where Ral perfects the magic on Ixalan to the onlooking of the happy Saheeli and Huatli. And of course the final scene is Ral proposing in the flashiest Izzet-iest way, and promptly getting nearly arrested for it. Also, despite Ral attempting to keep his project a secret, Tomik does have the paper legal citations needed to turn the Azorius lawmage away without taking Ral in handcuffs with him.
Okay, that's the soft one, now for the other
Second idea: Crash Town but for the other Dark Signers, especially Misty and Carly. I wanna see them wrestle with their actions as Dark Signers. To see them have to come to terms with themselves being used in the Goodwins's games. And in this weird game of cosmic chess. I think this involves going to go see Kalin/Kiryu and Griger in a therapy road trip. Hell, maybe they even find a way to talk to the Goodwins in the afterlife just for some closure. Also I want Misty and Carly to kiss
So yea, fluffy mtg fic or emotional yugioh fic are the options.

Is there a reason in the lore why individuals aligned with a particular color tend to almost exclusively wear it?
I was about to chalk this up to “Power Ranger Syndrome,” but I decided to first take another look at the planeswalker art we have to see how many of them actually do wear clothes that match their color identity.
Looking at it on a case by case basis, it seems to be a bit more nuanced than I thought. Here’s what I found:
Ajani Goldmane - While Ajani’s own fur is white, he really doesn’t start wearing any white clothing until he inherits Elspeth’s cloak
Angrath - He wears a red sash, but most of his black and red appearance comes from his black hair and face, in addition to the red heat that emanates from him
Arlinn Kord - Wears clothes made of furs, but they’re mostly earth tones, more than red and green
Ashiok - Plenty of black (probably for dramatic effect) but pretty much no blue
Chandra Nalaar - What’s red and red and red all over? Totally Chandra, even without all that fire (though she comes from a plane where vibrant colors in clothing are part of the culture, and maybe she wants to match her fire magic?)
Dack Fayden - Mostly dark blue clothes with a very bright red hand
Daretti - No red visible on his clothes or his skin
Domri Rade - I guess his pants are kind of red? Honestly, the lighting in his art makes it really hard to tell
Dovin Baan - Blue skin, but no white or blue clothing
Elspeth Tirel - Her cloak is most definitely white, but that can be explained by the fact that it comes from Bant and she is constantly seeking a place of light and purity
Feyalise - I can’t tell if her clothes are inspired by plants or actually are plants, but either way yeah they’re really green
Garruk Wildspeaker - Like Arlinn, his clothes are mostly furs and earth tones
Gideon Jura - While his armor is often depicted reflecting white light, it’s not actually white itself, just shiny
Huatli - Yeah her armor definitely has a red and white motif going on (which maybe explains why the art on her G/W card feels so out of place to me?)
Jace Beleren - BLUE HOOD, BLUE CLOAK, BLUE BELT SHIRT!! Yup, Jace is little boy blue alright, but to be fair, he could just be trying to match the cool blue color that his magic makes
Karn - Colorless is not a color, and Karn has no clothes
Kaya - Earth tone clothes, rather than white and black, though she does have black hair
Kiora - Blue skin, but her clothes (armor? shells?) are neither green nor blue
Koth - He’s got a red sash thing around his waist, but that could be explained by the fact that he’s a Vulshok, maybe?
Liliana Vess - Black hair, dark purple clothes
Nahiri - White skin and hair, clothing is mostly earth tones with a little bit of red accents
Narset - Definite blue and white theme to her clothes, likely because of her history with the Ojutai clan
Nicol Bolas -  Lots of gold in his appearance (which sometimes looks kinda green?) but not much black, red, or blue is visible
Nissa Revane - GREEN GREEN GREEN!!! Though I suppose that’s natural when you grow up in a super verdant jungle and you don’t want to be seen by baloths
Ob Nixilis - Black armor that appears to have fused into black skin later on? Maybe it’s part of that “Black Oath” he took…
Ral Zarek - Red and blue clothing that can be justified by his membership in the Izzet League
Saheeli Rai - The only in-story reason I can think of for her clothes to be so vibrantly blue and red is that she just looks so gosh darn STUNNING in them!
Samut - I can’t really see any red or green in her clothing or appearance in general
Sarkhan Vol - I feel like Sarkhan’s clothing and color identity both change so much he’s hard to comment on here
Sorin Markov - Pale skin and white hair, and black clothes because he’s Edgey
Tamiyo - Her skin is white and her clothes are green, but no trace of blue in her appearance, even though it’s her primary color
Teferi - Blue vest (is that thing a vest?) could be due to his time studying at the Tolarian Academy
Tezzeret - Some art depicts him wearing blue, but not the majority (I feel like his metal arm and red face markings are the only thing that really give him a signature “look”)
Tibalt - His skin is red and he has a red vest, but most of his clothes are earth tones
Ugin - Colorless is not a color, and Ugin has no clothes
Urza - Urza is just a head
Venser - Venser has some white under his outer layer of clothes (though I wouldn’t call it underwear) but I can’t see any blue, which is his primary color
Vraska - On Ravnica, Vraska’s green and black clothing can be attributed to her Golgair allegiance (and on Ixalan she wears whatever the heck she wants!)
Xenagos - Green clothes (do ribbons count as clothes?) and red, uh… body paint?
OK, that was fun to run through all the current planeswalkers with cards and their style choices, but here’s what I find really interesting. Until I looked up the art, I just assumed that most planeswalkers do wear clothing with their color identities. When in reality, that is actually the minority of cases.
So why the mistake? I think some of it can be attributed to things like Ajani’s white fur or Dovin Baan’s blue skin, but I think it mostly stems from the colors of the lighting and backgrounds that the artists portray that leave us thinking Garruk’s art is green and Daretti’s art is red (even when the appearance of the characters themselves isn’t.)
Thanks for the interesting question, @luckystampede!!
(On an unrelated note, is it strange to anybody else, that all of the planeswalkers with names starting with T through X don’t have last names?)

somethingwolfy replied to your post: hey guys! i’m here in chicago with the...
MtG mashup Radha, Grand Warlord x Nahiri, the Harbinger
OR Saheeli x Huatli!
Sorry, I actually don’t play MtG or know very much about the lore, so I don’t think I could do these guys justice. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond though! ❤
