Avatar doesn’t need a live action, neither does HOW TO TRAJN YOUR DRAGOK WJAT TJE FUCK-
The way I think about it is this: If a live action cannot improve, expand on, make more accessible, and/or complement the original animated version, it’s not necessary. If after watching the live action you STILL hold the original version in higher regard, the show didn’t need a live action. What will it bring to the story other than more money for a greedy corporation? Ok yes it might be nice to see a show you like in a different medium, but do we live in a bubble? Do we indulge and overindulge in the same stories over and over and over and never see anything original or unique or… risky?
Because I don’t know about you guys but I’ve been noticing a lot of live action remakes recently. And movies that don’t take many risks. And Star Wars.
Consider One Piece, which I think is a brilliant example of a live action doing everything it should do. Heck it made my mum love One Piece but she would NEVER watch the original anime; the anime is flawed, pandering, misogynistic (yes it’s one of the better shōnen anime for this, I know) in it’s objectification of women, ridiculous to the point that it only appeals to… anime fans, what more need I say? Whereas the live action is fun, goofy, touching and meaningful, boasts a huge pacing improvement and is accessible to a much wider audience to a far greater effect than a live action of the other two will achieve. It complements the original and even excels in many aspects.
Avatar and HTTYD function perfectly in their original medium. God I can’t stand that they’re being remade. WHY? It’s like Frankenstein. Remaking and remaking and always ALWAYS missing the point of the original text. Humanity is doomed-
Sorry that got deep.
Like can we get an adaptation of the Stormlight Archive?
If you adore these two shows and are just excited about it I’m happy for you, live your life, etc. I just don’t share the sentiment and feel that it represents something wrong with our attitude to storytelling and medium (and capitalism. It’s capitalism, guys. Ursula K. Le Guin tried to warn us-)
As always feel free to interact with this post but keep it friendly and respectful. If you can’t do that then DNI.

love to see that it seems like they completely butchered one of the greatest scenes in the entire franchise (the downed dragon)
no more slowly panning across toothless' body, finally revealing his open eye for the first time after panning over his wing. his gaze/expression is also so intense, so meaningful.......
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
no. now he just opens his eye in clear view and stares up with a "pls don't kill meeee 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺" look
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i wouldn't be surprised if they did this just to show off his new nictitating membrane lmao and it's like. yeah it's cool or whatever but it's absolutely not worth ruining one of the most iconic shots/moments, especially when you could always just show it off in a different shot/scene???
this movie is pissing me off so much already. fuck.

The movie is soulless and bland its an adaptation of an adaptation the latter of which at least did something original with the premise. I hate it, it takes way everything fun and beautiful about the series, it's an example of how animation isnt treated as a serious story telling medium and I'm gonna be pissed if they try to do sequels however.
I will hunt anyone making racist comments about Nico Parker for SPORT.

i just have a few complaints
1. what did they do to my boy toothless he looks BALD
2. mason take that wig off rn it looks so unnatural
3. did you just copy the animated film shot by shot. literally just leave the goddamn REAL film alone if you're gonna copy it exactly?? what is the point please

Listen I get that a lot of people are Very upset about the live action httyd and stuff but if you reblog a gifset just to bitch about how ugly or bad it looks or how you don’t want a live action movie you are genuinely the worst.
Make your own post complaining about it but don’t talk shit on a gifset that someone took the time and energy to make.

Hey old HTTYD people who might still follow me somehow because it's not like I'm getting new followers on Tumblr in 2024,
Is it finally okay to openly side-eye the live action remake from the start, or do I need to either pretend to like it or shut up like everyone who didn't like THW needed to do back in the day? Or can we finally actually talk about the newer HTTYD franchise installments being... kind of a downgrade?
Of course I would tag the negativity 'cause I'm not an asshole, and tumblr has had a built in tag/phrase blocker for years,

i maybe would be a lot less annoyed about the live action httyd if they didn’t go full cgi for the dragons and did practical puppets instead, that’s why i’m fine with the stage shows!
with cgi, it really does feel like an attempt to “upgrade” the original animation, without creativity or bringing anything substantially new (aside from crusty scales and emotionless eyes)
if you’re going to attempt a new medium, fully go for it! it’s so weird that the general public prefers live action to “for kids” animation just because there are real human faces along with rushed cgi
imo cameras, green screen, and cgi are rarely better than fully animated. with equal passion put into both, i still think animated is better. most live action remakes still rely on animation / graphics made on computers. so what’s the point

Like I know it's only the first trailer and it's recorded on a potato but like. My first impressions are not good. At all. It looks so soulless. I legitimately hate it. In this first short trailer alone i noticed multiple little things that they left out/changed that really helped make the first movie so great and gave it so much heart and soul.
Not that I had any hopes for this film but man. This is just depressing. I don't like to see some of my favorite scenes in all of cinema being ruined, in a way.
Like just. Compare this to the original:

So much character removed and for what? """"""""Realism""""''""? In your movie that features pop culture vikings and mythical creatures? Come the fuck on.

Amidst the (racism-unrelated) criticism of the film, I do feel for Dean. Reading between the lines here, I think this is the most direct way he can say “yes it’s unnecessary, but I don’t want to let anyone else ruin HTTYD more than a live action remake already inherently does.”

You know what’s sad. Regardless of who they cast as Astrid, whether live action or voice actress. The character Astrid will always get criticized :(
There was quite a lot of arguments about her even before the Live Action announcement. Unfortunately she will always face criticism.
Astrid is one of the toughest characters to dissect story wise. I think that is what makes her a beautiful character to watch. In a way she plays as an audience surrogate, asking questions that we would asked, witness things unfold and acting as how we would. She is the realest character of httyd. If someone mentions Berk, I think of her. She is the face and product of Berk. In a way we learn from her, how to judge and be open minded.
You're absolutely right. I always see so much Astrid criticism. So much.
And you know, that last paragraph you wrote? Totally true. So, so true. I love the analysis, anon! Astrid is a fantastic and complex character, and people tend to not like the complexities.
(I'm still just pissed over how racist everyone is being about her actress.)

Also the fact I've genuinely seen people praise httyd for it's body-diversity in the female characters. Barring the random background characters who are copy-pasted models used to fill out crowd scenes, who maybe get a single line and a canon name in the credits, EVERY female character is a thin, conventionally attractive white woman, with the only exception being Ruffnut, who you could maybe argue doesn't count as conventionally attractive.
And then they've got the same lack of representation problem multiplied tenfold when you get into the race department.
In the movies, shorts and tv series, can you point to a single character that speaks at least one line, has a name, ISN'T a villain, and is even ambiguously a POC?
The lack of diversity in itself is appalling, but when the most prominent non-white characters in the entire franchise are Drago, Krogan and Chaghatai Khan (who I bet you have to google, he's one of the Warlords in httyd3) then you've got a real problem.
And don't get me started on Johann and his not-so-great similarities to a lot of Antisemitic propaganda about Jewish people.
Me: narratively speaking it doesn’t make sense for the dragon hunters, outcasts or berserkers to be comprised entirely of men.
Berk clearly has women warriors and doesn’t discriminate or delegate them to safer roles such as home defence. Women seem to be encouraged to be warriors and be muscly. There is a lot of interesting backstory to delve into with this, either drawing inspiration from the irl female vikings, or the darker implications of a war torn Berk desperate for all the warriors it could get its hands on regardless of birth rates (a man can have a hundred children a year, but a woman is limited to 1).
There are other tribes who blatantly follow these same practices, in some cases to higher extremes than berk. The Wingmaidens value female warriors above males as they are unable to manage the razorwhip population due to the animals gender bias. The defenders of the wing have equal male:female ratios in their village and seem to have a mandatory military service for all citizens, including women as all are in armour. Not to mention that they have a queen rather than the stereotypical chief, possibly mimicking the dragon kingdom that they worship.
Dagur doesn’t take offence to heather being a warrior, and there seems to be warrior women on berserker island, but the armada is shockingly made up entirely of men. The outcasts and dragon hunters take it a step further and have no women visible at any point. Compared to berk, the wingmaidens and the defenders of the wing, this is a massive discrepancy.
The obvious answer is that the creators didn’t have the budget for multiple character models, and so they prioritised the male models to fit the audience expectations. The defenders of the wing only have 1:1 gender ratios because their models are reused hiccup and heather models. The wingmaidens are the only culture with consistent multiple female models because it came later in the series, when the creators realised they had an extreme male heavy cast.
This is incredibly gross and should be talked about more as most modern (5 years old is still modern) cartoons have a male heavy focus in both characters and viewerbase despite a great deal of people claiming that women are fairly represented in media, and that feminism is no longer needed.
Tumblr Guy: women weren’t included for historical accuracy.

Speaking of fancasts since I saw your post with that HTTYD fancast that’s terribly generic: I saw this viral collage of Taylor Zakhar Perez and Sabrina Carpenter as Flynn and Rapunzel and as someone who witnessed the entire discourse of Avantika getting racially motivated harassment from a fancast, it’s really suspicious to me that TZP, a brown skinned Latino man is an okay fancast for Flynn but not a brown skinned Indian woman 🤨
We can't let a brown actress play a princess but are totally okay with casting a brown actor to play a thief.
This brings back when these designs of Flynn were considered before getting the one we got and were criticized because of the "romani bandit" stereotype.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The "Rapunzel is german" argument is mute because they wanted non german actors to play the character. Most of Disney's fairy tale films all take place in a vaguely medieval setting that in the Little Mermaid, Eric's kingdom takes place in a tropical setting as shown by palm trees in the background, indicating a tropical European location like somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea yet people think it takes place in Denmark because the original fairy tale was written by a Danish closeted author.
Rapunzel wasn't even blonde, she's a natural brunet who turned blonde because of the flower's magic. The casting of a brown actress to play Rapunzel would be fine since she would still be blonde either dying or wigs because that's the character's signature trait.
I genuinely care very little of the live action Tangled at the moment since it's just announced with the guy who made Greatest Showman to direct and that casting hasn't been done yet.
But if Disney were to commit to an Indian take on Rapunzel, make the cast and setting Indian. A minor gripe I had with the live action Aladdin is that they could've went full Bollywood but didn't, so might as well make Tangled into a fantastical film.
While we at it, why not cast Flynn as a woman just to spite the red pill chokers? Fem Flynn taking on a male thief persona to hide her identity would be a unique take for the character.

Astrid Race Swap an Articel from Reddit
Astrid in the new HTTYD remake looks nothing like her animated counterpart, and the discourse around this drives me up a wall because I feel like both sides are missing the point.
My issue with the actress being mixed isn’t about her being 50% white or 50% Black—it’s that she doesn’t resemble Astrid from the original at all. That’s going to fuck with my immersion while watching the movie (not that I’m planning to—I have zero interest in this trend of turning amazing animated media into “live-action.” One isn’t better than the other).
I hate the discourse around this kind of thing because so many of the arguments are brain-dead. Stuff like, “Why do you care so much about a kids' film lol?” or, “It has DRAGONS, who cares!?” And then there’s the other side: “Vikings weren’t Black, this isn’t realistic!”
Here’s where I stand: my problem with race-swapping isn’t necessarily about race itself. It’s about drastically altering the appearance of an established character—whether it’s their race, hairstyle, or outfit. It’s harder for me to connect with them because it messes with their visual identity, which tanks my immersion. And more importantly: why? Why change a character’s look so drastically? What purpose does it serve beyond pushing a personal agenda or farming controversy for engagement?
Imagine if someone remade STAR WARS A New Hope and decided Darth Vader didn’t need his black-and-grey colour scheme anymore—he’s rocking blue and green now, and his helmet gets swapped for a Bane-style breathing apparatus. Everyone would be pissed, and rightly so. Why the fuck are you messing with a character's visual identity like that? My main issue here isn’t race-swapping. My issue is completely overhauling a character’s appearance, and race-swapping just happens to be a popular way to do it.
And honestly? Astrid’s actress could work just fine. Fix her hair and alter the outfit, and I wouldn’t have a problem with her. I’d be equally as annoyed if they’d drastically changed Hiccup—but they didn’t. He actually looks like Hiccup, which I find curious. Why not be this accurate with everyone?
Finally, my issues with altering the appearance of a character go far beyond just this movie. And hey, maybe the movie will be amazing despite my issues with Astrid and Snotlout and whoever else. But, whether it’s shit and I hate it or amazing and I love it, that's entirely sperate to my hiccups with the appearance of the characters. Wordplay.
Thanks to whoever bothered to read all this. I needed to get it out. By the way, I’m mixed myself—Black dad, white mom—so I’m immune from being labeled racist. That’s how that works,
TL;DR Astrid in the new HTTYD remake looks nothing like her original counterpart. My issue isn’t about race—it’s about drastically changing a character’s visual identity unnecessarily, which ruins immersion. I'd have the same criticism if Darth Vader was remade with a red and blue colour scheme wearing a scuba mask instead of his helmet.
