love to see that it seems like they completely butchered one of the greatest scenes in the entire franchise (the downed dragon)
no more slowly panning across toothless' body, finally revealing his open eye for the first time after panning over his wing. his gaze/expression is also so intense, so meaningful.......
no. now he just opens his eye in clear view and stares up with a "pls don't kill meeee 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺" look
i wouldn't be surprised if they did this just to show off his new nictitating membrane lmao and it's like. yeah it's cool or whatever but it's absolutely not worth ruining one of the most iconic shots/moments, especially when you could always just show it off in a different shot/scene???
this movie is pissing me off so much already. fuck.

people saying the live action httyd looks good are actually blowing my mind like did we even watch the same trailer
#httyd live action salt#anti httyd live action#to be clear I don't think it's the worst thing in the world it just looks like a carbon copy fanmade film#if it wasn't a studio budget motion picture I would be like 'wow these are some dedicated and really talented fans good on em!#but it IS a studio budjet film so like.#it just looks like the exact same movie but without the soul#so why would I even watch it#also I have a lot of strong feelings about the costume design#the fabrics and materials look so machine-made its infuriating#like I swear Hiccup is wearing spandex yoga pants or some shit in one of the shots#If it were a cosplay I'd be like 'wow that looks really good!'#but a FILM????#nah dawg#also loose the UGG boots plz

Saw someone complain that Hiccup looks too young to be 15 in HTTYD, that he looks more like a 13yo, and that the live action "fixed" that by having Hiccup "finally look his age"... BUT THAT'S THE POINT THOUGH? He was born early, he's the runt of the village, considered a fishbone and a toothpick, "you can't lift a hammer, you can't swing an axe", visibly struggles with fighting etc. Yeah no shit he's small for his age, he's on the short end of the spectrum, he hasn't had his growth spurt yet either. Lots of people look younger (or older) than they are and that is normal! I just hate that the live action is considered a fix here, when in reality the live action takes away a great part of what formed Hiccup to be who he is. The live action guy doesn't look scrawny at all, there is no reason why that guy couldn't fight, or be called a runt or fishbone.

The HTTYD life-action looks like The Last Kingdom if it had dragons and just sucked.
And I know for a fact the moment it comes out, everyone will be like "This is how live actions should be done!" "This isn't like other live actions, this looks good and adds new things to the story!"
There's a high chance that the success of this movie will spark a new fave of content for this universe, but only in a lazy live-action and I won't look forward nor actually get into any of it. I'll just spend the time thinking why they couldn't have done it before (the answer is caring only about money). What I know for certain is if it does happen, my disdain for this franchise will grow high and I'll leave behind an universe I dearly enjoyed despite it's flaws.
So I'm letting everyone know that no matter how 'good' it is, it should not exist in the first place and no amount of interviews from the directors will ever convince me on why this was ever neccesary.
#but i'm willing to forgive everything if thw life action happens and they cast mads mikkelsen as grimmel /j#life action this life action that. where is the “if it was done like arcane” remake. where is the “what if hellblade's writers made this”#httyd#httyd live action#how to train your dragon#httyd live action salt#no respect for animation. no respect for video games. i have no respect for anyone in support of live-action remakes#this is not meant to be an insult to tlk. tlk is awesome

This is so fucking ugly. I will not be watching it. I have a perfectly good animated film to watch instead which is infinitely better than this steaming hot pile of garbage.
Also why the hell did they change the Kill Ring that makes no sense to have it that way.
Sure it’s soulless and only exists to be a lazy cashgrab but at least now it’s a REAL movie unlike that toddler cartoon /s

Just watched the httyd live action trailer and there are so many things I could complain about (just the fact that it exists being one of them) but like
They changed the structure of Toothless' hind legs??? In the original his hind legs function the way human legs do, his heel is flat in the ground and the bend of his leg is his knee, making him a plantigrade. But in the live action the bend of his leg is in his ankle?? They made him a digitigrade??? Why??? For what purpose???
#such a fucking innocuous and petty thing to complain about#but as an anatomy nerd this deeply agitates me#it makes more sense for him to be a plantigrade anyway???#skeletal structure wise#most lizards are plantigrades irl#so are most of the quadrupedal dragons in httyd???#so why change it#god its all im gonna be looking at for the duration of time Toothless is on screen in the live action#his fucked up legs that in all honesty probably make him less aerodynamic#cuz he cant fully tuck them against his body#grgrgr#httyd#how to train your dragon#hiccup#toothless#toothless httyd#httyd toothless#how to train your dragon live action#httyd live action#live action httyd#live action#salt#im not joking the first time i watched the trailer this was the thing that i fucking noticed#the structure of a fictional flying lizard's hind legs#kill me

So the teaser for the live action How To Train Your Dragon film has dropped. Have you seen it? Any thoughts on it?
I just saw it, and BOY do I have some thoughts about it lmao
Live action remakes already annoy me for several reasons, and as much as I want to be excited for "new" HTTYD media, it really misses the mark for me
The movie doesn't look original to me. It's so obviously a remake of something else that it loses any personality it could otherwise have. If the original HTTYD movie had been a live action movie from the start, it would have looked nothing like this, because the creators would have tried to create something that stood out from other movies. This one just feels like a checklist being completed in front of me: "right so we'll have this scene, and then we'll have this scene, and the dragon does this, and the boy does this, and then this is the part the fans like so we're going to recreate it 1:1", but no real understanding of what made the original as beloved as it is.
This trailer just looks soulless to me, but I'm holding out hope that the other trailers will show us more and hopefully prove me wrong
Toothless's design is... fine I guess? They made his hind legs digitegrade for some reason, which just looks very jarring to me. Idk why they felt the need to change it, it's one of the details that made his design feel unique to me. Like dragons' legs are almost always depicted as dinosaur-like and digitegrade, and HTTYD having dragons that have plantigrade legs feels really cool. The wings are comically oversized and he lost a lot of his personality based on the scene recreations shown in the trailer (like the silly People Sit he does in the original, now he just sits like a dog lmao) but it really, really could have been worse.
I slowed it down to catch some of the other dragon species' designs and eeeeeehhhh... They're recognizable, I'll say that. They also lost a lot of the personality that the original models had, they look a lot more uniform in their proportions. I really don't see why making them look "realistic" has to mean that they look more boring, when we have so many animals irl that look fake and made up because of how absurd they look. They could have had more fun with it is what I'm saying
Casting Gerard Butler as Stoick feels like the only actually good decision, his voice as Stoick just can't be recreated. Hiccup's actor is... also fine I guess, no strong feelings whatsoever.
The thing that bothers me the most is the lighting. The original HTTYD movie paid special attention to making the lighting look as realistic and believable as possible. It's atmospheric and helps you get sucked into the world while you watch. "Subdued" is probably a good word to describe it. It very intentionally doesn't go overboard. The lighting in the trailer looks fake as hell. They could be using real actual lighting conditions on set and I still wouldn't believe it's real.
Overall, I have mixed feelings despite all the negative things I just listed. I'm sharing in the excitement of all the people who want to watch it, but I'm still disappointed that it, like, exists at all. No matter what this movie ends up looking like, I'm always going to prefer the original animated movies. I'm open to being proved wrong though, I really hope this movie is going to be better than anything we're imagining rn
#asks#httyd#how to train your dragon#dreamings#not dragon art#httyd live action#this isn't meant to be salt these are just all the thoughts I had as I was watching the trailer#the fact that there aren't many positive ones is another thing lol

also can we talk about how live action toothless' eyes are like.....NEON green??? what the hell lol.
also don't like that his pupils are no longer square-ish - was never a super big fan of the like, extremely rectangular pupils of his httyd 2 and especially thw designs but the original with the rounded square pupils......it's so night fury to me. so sad to see it not return.........

Every new live action remake is a chance for a new story to be told taken away, so every LARM needs to justify its existence, imo. I've said it before but Cinderella (2015) is a good LARM, because it removed the main things people disliked about the original animated movie (the mice getting too much screentime, the prince barely even being a character, etc.) and added a ton of personality, beauty and new life to an older story. If you're not aiming for that level of quality then don't even fucking bother. Why not make a live action of another story that doesn't have a movie yet? Or bring the original HTTYD books to the big screen? :/
this is (hopefully) gonna be my one post about the live action because I do not want to hear or think about it. also if you hold or have expressed any of the opinions here that's totally cool and fine, this is in no way personal and I'm still happy for you if you can enjoy it!
This thing does not need to exist. Words cannot describe how much I do not care. The color palettes, shots, sets, costumes, etc. so far seem so close to the original that it makes me question why they would even bother. If you're going to do live action, there should at least be a PRETENSE that you have something to add by doing so. I hate Disney live action remakes as much as the next guy, but at least they tend to look like what the movie would look like if it were live action, y'know? And if you can't do that, that's maybe a good sign that the thing was in the medium it was in for a reason. I saw someone say that it looks like an insurance commercial and I can't stop thinking about that. Everything that looked cold and misty and atmospheric in the original looks sad and like it's filmed on a stage.
I saw someone say that we should at least be grateful that we're getting new content for the franchise and hoping the lore would be expanded. I could maybe, maybe even see that perspective too IF HTTYD WASN'T ALREADY AN EXTREMELY EXTENSIVE AND FLESHED OUT WORLD. We have a theatrically released TRILOGY. We have three pretty solid TV shows with the same characters totalling EIGHT SEASONS and 118 EPISODES. We have multiple video games, multiple shorts, and two more adjacent TV shows. And if that's not enough dragons for you, then there are the twelve books that it was based on, which are pretty different but just as beautiful and special.
I will not be happy with a live action remake. I was never going to be. There does not need to be more. And I especially do not want a washed out shot for shot regurgitation of a perfectly good movie spat out in my lap when I could literally just be watching that movie. No thank you. I'm done hearing about the thing.
And most importantly, I think the thing that really gets me about the discussion around live action remakes is when people are desperately reaching for good things to say about them or acting like "oh, well, you gotta hand it to them for this one aspect at least." You. Do. Not. You don't. I saw this a lot with the ATLA live action too, and while it's totally okay if you enjoy it or you just like seeing something in live action, you do not have to look for things to like. You SHOULDN'T have to look for things to like. We deserve better, and we do not have to waste our precious minutes on earth being grateful or looking for positives in a watery forgettable useless piece of media when there are so many good and beautiful things in the world.

one of the things that kills me about the httyd live action (besides, y'know, all the usual stuff) is that dean deblois has stated that it draws more inspiration from the books or whatever, so it's a live action version of the first movie but hoho! with more stuff sourced from the books!
but like i do not trust what he means by that after he said he was drawing inspiration from the books for httyd 3
all THAT amounted to was him slapping the opening monologue from the first httyd book over the epilogue of the third movie and pretending they were analogous
httyd 3's ending sucks major butt for so many reasons but it especially galls me that it was a so-called effort to hew to the books when the books clearly have such different reasons and contexts for why the dragons left and how the dragons left. and in the third movie they left because hiccup got sad? or because toothless was suddenly representative of all dragonkind?
so i have zero hope for how the live action movie will pull ~inspiration~ from the books. if they wanted to live action the books, age hiccup down, give him flaming red hair, and make toothless the little shithead he so gloriously was in the series
#rowan speaks#httyd#httyd live action#thw salt#i can pop off even harder but i thought this was good enough for now LOL#does anyone know why toothless looks so fucking crusty in the leaked screenshots#he needs some moisturizer goddamn

Imagine if the live action HTTYD remakes reshaped the franchise in Dean's original vision prior to uhhh. The HTTYD 2 super-rewrite. And then made the ending of HTTYD THW actually work in the narrative.
HTTYD LA: Same movie as before except Toothless and Hiccup develop a relationship which is a lot more master/pet focused (a la the books) than the species-transcending platonic soulmates shit they've got going on in the animated franchise. Moments during the Forbidden Friendship, See You Tomorrow and Test Drive sequences especially could totally hammer this point home.
HTTYD 2 LA: Dragon-Viking culture on Berk now resembles Book!Book in that it's peaceful but unhealthy. Toothless is treated as a pet and is implied to not enjoy this. Valka is the villain and is batshit insane, Drago is foreshadowed, Valka kills Stoick, Hiccup defeats her and becomes chief (he pulls a Hiccup Is A Pacifist and tells her to leave with her dragons and never come back a la Furious in the books). Toothless defeats the Bewilderbeast on his own but instead of this being framed as a Protect My Soulmate thing, it's moreso framed as asserting Toothless as being his own dragon rather than just Hiccup's pet.
HTTYD 3 LA: Drago is a thing now. Optional stuff happens here. That conflict gets resolved. Hiccup loves the dragons and will go up against literal warlords to protect them, but dragons and vikings still separate in the end because Dragon-Viking culture is toxic as shit (a la the books). Toothless is the one to make this decision and Hiccup finally treats him like an individual instead of a pet, allowing him to make this decision.
OPTIONAL:
If you really want the Hidden World to be a thing, then sure. Let Drago attack the Hidden World and Hiccup and Toothless defend it. Personally, I don't like the Hidden World right down to the very concept, but if you really want it, then I can see it working. Hell, they could find Valka living down there with all her dragons which could alleviate some concerns about introducing foreign dragons, etc.
Toothless being the only Night Fury. We know Drago's arm was bitten off by a Night Fury, so he could have a personal vendetta against them and kill every single one he finds instead of using them for his dragon army. Would be a lot easier for Drago to hunt Night Furies with a fucking Bewilderbeast than it would be for Grimmel with six Deathgrippers and Magic Poison™.
The Light Fury and the Night Lights. Toothless would totally be willing to sit by and watch her shoot at Hiccup in this AU. Give her an actual personality, make her hate humans (trauma from being in Drago's army) with a fierce passion, make her violent and strong. She could totally have chemistry with Toothless in this AU, given Toothless's detestation of being treated as a pet and her trauma and hatred of humans. Instead of bait, she's a threat.
If I had the time, I'd write this myself (who am I kidding I might try to anyway). Like, I really hate Man vs Nature stories where Man Bad Nature Good for many reasons, but hey, if there's any reason to remake the franchise, this is it. Recreate HTTYD 2 in it's original vision and make THW work within the narrative in a way that everyone can get down with.

Wake up babe, Disney is crapping on its own properties by quantifying over qualifying and unnecessarily milking its content dry for the sole purposes of cash-grabbing knowing that it will face 0 marketing consequences for doing so….. again…
#The lion king#salt#the lion king 2019#Disney#live action#animation.#Seriously what the actual fuck#I thought that this was a hoax but goddamn#The prequel I could kinda get and I was willing to let that slide even if it did turn out to be a flop#But someone actually looked at this unimaginative emotionless Disney remake from almost four years ago#and thought that said remake opened the doors for a cinematic universe#Because Mufasa sounding like a tired old man and Keegan Micheal Key and Eric Andre being given unfunny material to work with is apparently#Grounds for expansion?#Then again Disney’s remaking Moana and making a Toy Story 5 so I don’t know what the fuck to expect#And even Dreamworks is hopping on the bandwagon with the HTTYD live-action remake#In short the entertainment industry is really taking a step backwards.
