A Wednesday morning editorial in business daily Kauppalehti warns that Finland is not prepared for a trade war with the United States.
The impact of US President Donald Trump's trade war will be felt in Finland from Wednesday morning, KL writes. Tariffs of 20 percent have been placed on goods from the European Union, which has yet to announce any retaliatory measures but is expected to do so later in the day on Wednesday.
KL notes that this will plunge the world economy into a level of economic isolationism not seen since the Great Depression and mark the end of globalisation.
The business outlet claims that smaller, export-driven countries like Finland are in a particularly difficult position.
One of the economies that relies heavily on international trade is Singapore, which has a population roughly the size of Finland.
Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said that it's not enough to just sit back and hope for the best, but to prepare for difficult times and new shocks. He added that the southeast Asian city-state needs to mentally prepare for the worst so that it wasn't caught by surprise.
KL argues that in Finland, which is preparing for municipal elections, politicians seem to be disconnected from reality, promising increased spending on the basis of unseen economic growth.
Detroit to Helsinki
Newspaper Helsingin Sanomat spoke with Joseph Shriner, a Detroit-native who moved from the United States to Helsinki three weeks ago.
The reason for the Michigander's move was the re-election of US President Donald Trump.
"The first term was a joke, but now he's going to carry out all his crazy threats. It's scary," Shriner told HS.
Neither Shriner nor his wife Stacie Linek had been abroad before landing at Helsinki Airport.
"I have never been happy with any president in my entire life. [Barack] Obama was the best, but even he promised more than he delivered. It seems like presidents and politicians only care about their own well-being," said the 41-year-old Shriner.
As soon as Democrat Kamala Harris' loss in the US presidential election was confirmed, so was Shriner's decision to accept a job offer from Finland.
He was working in Detroit as an IT consultant and received an offer in the same field from a Finnish firm.
The move was also a good fit for his wife. Linek works for the international art auction house Sotheby's, HS writes, and is able to work in Helsinki as a subcontractor for the company.
Shriner said that the US is plagued by many things: excessive materialism, authoritarianism, the socio-economic situation and immigration policy.
"We will never go back to the US," he told HS.
Shriner and his acquaintances were horrified to follow a presidential campaign website, project2025.org, which listed the things that would change with Trump.
The couple now live in Katajanokka and do not miss their home in the United States.
"I enjoy Helsinki. There are parks and nature nearby, you can walk to places, unlike in Detroit, where you have to drive everywhere," Shriner said.
Before moving to Finland, the couple knew little about Finland.
"The forest, lakes, rally and computers. It all sounded good," Shriner told HS.
The couple had been intimidated by Finland's cold winters and high taxes, but the winters are familiar to Michigan residents and the taxes were a pleasant surprise.
"Here, after expenses, you end up with more money than in the US. Society in Finland offers so much: public transport, infrastructure, healthcare, for example. Many things are better here than in the US."
Shriner said that Finns should be proud of their country.
"I'm proud to live here too. My goal is to learn the language better so I can say it in Finnish."
Finnish defence spending increase a White House win
Meanwhile, tabloid Iltalehti notes that the White House included Finland in its weekly list of "wins" under Donald Trump’s administration, though its claim appears to stretch the truth.
In the update for week 11, the White House stated that Trump continued to promote "peace through strength" around the world, citing a pledge from Finland to increase its defence spending to three percent of GDP.
To support the claim, the White House links to a Wall Street Journal article reporting Finland’s aim to raise defence spending to at least three percent of GDP by 2029.
The announcement from the Finnish government came just three days after President Alexander Stubb visited Trump in Florida at the end of last month.
However, the article makes no mention of Trump receiving a pledge from Finland, nor does it credit the former president with influencing the decision.
Instead, it quotes Stubb as saying the move reflects changes in Finland’s security environment. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) has also emphasised that the spending increase is driven by Finland’s own defence needs.

welcome to marina, LANA JAMESON ( woman, she/her ) ! they are a TWENTY SIX year old who has lived on the island for THREE YEARS. word on the street is they’re currently living in TOWER HILL and works as a INSTAGRAM / EDITORIAL MODEL. everyone also says they look a lot like SADIE SOVERALL. what do you think?
PINTEREST
“below the stage the seats are empty. the theatre is dark. why do you keep acting?” — Charles Bukowski, Come On In!: New Poems
HISTORY:
lana grew up in a big house in albany, NY. i picture it w dark oak floors n lots of light furniture. albums framed on walls. mayb some rolling stone covers too frm way bk when of the bands her dad’s label signed. kind of like
a rock star palace w no evidence of children at all. i think i described it best in one of lana’s self paras once when i said the garden ws “as lavish as it was unloved”
lana’s mum victoria (vic) ws a music journalist w a pretty fruitful career ahead of her when she met lana’s dad richard (rich). his record label ws jst starting out, founded on the coattails of his rich best friend’s (jensen peters) investment w his other best friend (who he jst calls knoxville). it rocketed to success when they signed poppy injects, a rock band w an electric stage presence, n victoria ws drawn to the glitz n glamour of a man tht ws at the helm of his aspiring industry. their love ws very impulsive, all or nothing right frm the start, n it ws almost like she ws mre in love w his accomplishments n what he represented than him
anyway so jameson records repped a few big rock bands bk in the eighties, altho poppy injects r who they’re mostly known fr, namely bc of hw brightly they crashed n burned. they were a big chart success bt the lead singer hd quite an intense struggle w heroin (wsnt rly subtle abt it either while he ws in the public eye as u cn probably imagine frm such an on-the-nose band name) n he ws always in n out of the papers. it eventually brought down his career n it ws a big publicity nightmare
lana pretty much
grew up around figures like this throughout childhood. rly troubled characters who wld kind of
b extremely volatile n destructive abt their troubles. the jameson house was kind of an open one as welcoming clients went n a lot of parties took place there. a lot of the time musicians wld b snorting lines in the kitchen when she wnted to grab a bowl of cereal fr breakfast n it was just. a very strange environment fr a child to grow up in
her parents always kind of jst
didn’t like her much. her older brother caleb ws unplanned bt they sort of welcomed the surprise more bt
quickly realised they weren’t cut out fr parenthood n then when lana came as another surprise 3 yrs later they didn’t even try to hide their resentment abt the situation. her mum ws actually booked in to have an abortion bt cldnt go through with it at the last minute. once when lana asked her why shes so cold towards her she jst turned her head frm her dresser, looked at her, told her abt this n said “idk why i didn’t go”. lana didn’t kno wht to say to tht so she jst left her room n closed the door
(dissociation tw) bc of this growing up lana adopted this weird like
. she didn’t rly kno what it ws bt it ws a delusion of sorts where she thought she ws a ghost. she’d jst sort of
drift around the halls w noone acknowledging her n sometimes she ws jst convinced she wsnt actually there or they cldnt see her n she ws jst haunting the house frm a previous family
the one saving grace tho tht sort of?? gt her thru this n made her feel Seen ws caleb. lana quite genuinely hs always thought the sun shines out of her older brothers ass like she jst thinks. hes the best person in the entire world. wld b rly bewildered if anyone questioned tht. he wld always look out for her in the zoo they called a home n cut the crusts off her sandwiches (he’d cook fr them most of the time bc their parents were too busy/didn’t care to) n sometimes wld even sleep at the bottom of her bed curled up like a guard dog. it ws always lana n caleb n his best friend tommy against the world in tht house (tommy lived next door n was always over bc he had very strict parents including a military father tht he found suffocating)
SO when caleb n tommy announced tht they’d signed up to the army lana ws understandably

.. completely blindsided. she ws rly upset tht they were leaving bt she tried not to b mad at them n made them promise theyd b safe n back as soon as possible. she even asked if they cld somehow take her w them n they were jst like :/ it doesn’t work that way luv x
(death tw, ptsd tw, grief tw, trauma tw, hospitalisation tw, drugs tw) anyway caleb ended up getting discharged under grounds of severe ptsd when he witnessed tommy die in an explosion tht took place in a shock raid. caleb returned home sans tommy bt he was never the same after tht. he’s been in and out of hospital twice nw n he’s currently dipped off the radar after starting to use. lana kind of felt like two of her brothers died out there in a way n jst like tht it wasn’t them vs the world any mre, it was jst her. she doesn’t talk abt this tho. when she feels the urge to cry she usually jst smiles
ANYWAY whew tht rly
. took a dark turn there
.. chuckles nervously at hw sad lana’s life is bt it’s fine it’s all fINE!!!!!!! ok. so on a mre lighthearted note the jameson family r pretty well off n bc of her relation to such a big music industry figure she’s hung out w a fair few relatively high rep ppl thru her teens. mostly kids of celebrities n stuff like tht. she amassed kind of an instagram following mainly fr her style (lots of fur cuff trimmed jackets bt then also jst
. a wild combination of everything honestly. pastel faux fur coats, seventies style platforms, flame red cowboy boots, pink fishnet tights n glitter used like highlight Everywhere) n bc she’s undeniably Very Pretty
(trauma tw) after caleb got back he was rly withdrawn n depressed. he shut lana out n was kind of harsh to her a lot of the time, always telling her to leave him alone or pushing her away. it didnt help either tht lana had a rly traumatic experience w some of her dad’s colleagues at the label when she ws 16 n he was away n she cldnt even tell him abt it once he was bk bc of his own traumas. she kind of jst shut it all in n kept it to herself
(hypersexuality tw) this obviously?? made her spiral a lot. she was already a girl tht loved sex (she’d only rly done foreplay before tho) but since her trauma it got
. completely out of hand. it got to a point where she couldnt rly go 2 days without it, probably not even 1. her lowest point has probably been scrolling thru craiglist for anonymous encounters n meeting up w strangers on there fr a quick fuck jst for the thrill even tho it’s insanely dangerous n she cld wind up getting herself killed. it’s v clear at this point tht she has a sex addiction whether she’s ever admitted it or not. it kind of
almost mingled w tht same feeling she used to get when she ws younger of being a ghost?? like she jst. only rly feels Real when she’s being touched
ummm DISASTROUS romantic history honestly... riddled w beastly men and intense situationships n toxic cheating dynamics just. a lot.
went to uni for ballet n joining a travelling dance company bt. was kicked out fr excessive inebriation tht got in the way of her rehearsal times etc. now she just kind of insta models n does a few editorial shoots for realisation par n lingerie brands n such
PERSONALITY:
always smells vaguely of wild cherries or strawberry starburst or jst the candy aisle in general. if she ws a vinyl record she’d b this one n she’d only play good vibrations by the beach boys, dancing on my own by robyn, play that funky music by wild cherry, femme fatale by the velvet underground n (i can’t get no) satisfaction by the rolling stones
growing up lana was always a huge social butterfly. knew everyone n everyone knew her. she ws one of those girls tht ws kind of impossible to ignore or forget. very animated, always made u feel like u were the centre of the universe whenever she spoke to u, always made it feel like u were best friends even if ud only spoken to her once.
deliberately puts on tht kind of Magnetic Alluring Act tht femme fatales wear in movies w most ppl. kind of
. is always playing A Role of the person tht she wants to b seen as. womanhood as nonconsensual performance. chameleons to situations. feels like she’s performed as the vivacious n fun loving Lana Jameson fr so long tht she doesn’t rly kno who she is beneath tht bt she isn’t too keen to find out
she’s always been rly spontaneous n adventurous. always doing something weird n wild every weekend. she has ten thousand ridiculously absurd n chaotic stories
uncontrollably flirty. boundlessly confident. cld make a joke out a paper bag n her comedy is sometimes surreal / absurd. she tends to laugh when she feels like crying n has a smile brighter than a ray of texas sunshine
always dapples her fingers thru the breeze when she’s driving in a car w the window down. she almost always has some sort of sweet on her, whether it’s sour haribo cherries or strawberry lollipops
she adores david bowie n prince n madonna n anyone tht’s a vintage style icon w little care fr what ppl think
she’s had like 8472493874 ‘relationships’ n 99% of them haven't lasted beyond a month / hav been terrible / hav seen her being treated badly / she’s cheated on them
ummmm ya lets plot sexies

On Wednesday, business daily Kauppalehti ran an editorial criticising a controversial legislation proposal aimed at keeping foreigners in Finland employed, as the government moves the bill forward.
The so-called three-month rule bill aims to link work-related residence permits more closely to employment, putting people with such permits who become jobless at risk of deportation if they don't land a new job within three months.
Certain specialists will have six months to find a new job, an exception which was only included following considerable opposition during the bill's drafting phase. The law would not affect EU citizens, nor people holding residence permits granted on family grounds, but would affect more than 50,000 foreigners in the country.
According to the government's proposal, in September of this year, there were 51,459 work-based residence permits in Finland. Of these, there were 8,106 residence permits for special experts.
The editorial points out that the number of work-based permits has increased significantly in recent years, from around 20,000 people living in Finland for work each year. During these years only about 2.5 percent, or about 500 people, were unemployed each year.
The overall unemployment rate in Finland was 8.4 percent in September. Unemployment among people staying in Finland on work-based residence permits was therefore significantly lower than among Finns. Nevertheless, the duration of their unemployment periods more often lasted longer than three and six months.
The opinion piece noted that the three-month rule is due to come into force in April. The government's draft estimates the impact of the proposal, which could weaken workers' bargaining power by forcing them to accept less-desirable jobs in order to stay in the country.
On the other hand, employers may feel increased pressure to maintain employment relationships with foreign workers. Employers will be obliged to report, with the threat of sanctions, when an employment relationship ends. This will increase the burden, especially for small-and-medium enterprises, which already have fewer resources, KL emphasised.
The editorial also suggested that Finland needs to openly confront the problems posed by immigration, but wonders, "who benefits from this bill?".
"Finland needs more, not less, work-based immigration," KL concluded.
Air Force honouring last wartime pilot
Helsingin Sanomat remembered Finland's last surviving wartime pilot, Mauri Maunula, who passed away in mid-September at the age of 103.
The Air Force will honour the memory of Maunula with a flyover by four F/A-18 Hornets during a funeral ceremony in Helsinki's Pakila district shortly before noon on Wednesday, weather permitting.
The Helsinki native, born in 1921, was a military pilot who served in the Continuation War and the Lapland War as a reconnaissance and fighter pilot. He flew a total of 69 combat missions.
After the war, Maunula switched to civil aviation. In 1948, he began a pilot's course at Aero, the predecessor of Finnair.
He pursued a career as a commercial pilot, instructor and examiner. He logged 21,473 flight hours in military and civil aviation.
"The best thing about flying was the feeling of freedom when you took off and were alone with the plane. The passengers sit in the back; their safety and comfort is the most important thing," Maunula said in an interview with HS marking his 100th birthday.
He was also co-pilot on the repatriation flight which brought the coffin of former president Marshal C. G. E. Mannerheim from Switzerland to Finland in 1951. Maunula considered the task to be the highlight of his career, according to aviation publication Lentoposti.
Maunula ended his piloting career in 1983, but last year he had the opportunity to try out an F-35A fighter jet simulator at an Air Force air show in Turku.
Stubb on North Korean troops in Ukraine
President Alexander Stubb said he does not see the possibility of North Korean troops joining Russia's war in Ukraine as a step towards an expanded conflict, reports rural-focused newspaper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus.
At a press conference during a trip to Germany on Tuesday, Stubb said he would not overstate the significance of North Korean troops joining Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
According to South Korea's intelligence, North Korea has already sent some 1,500 special forces soldiers to Russia who will potentially be deployed to the Ukraine front.
Stubb said less attention has been paid to what China makes of North Korea's possible role in the war.
Stubb and his wife Suzanne Innes-Stubb will make a state visit to China next week, where Stubb will meet with President Xi Jinping.
"I will certainly ask the Chinese president what China's attitude is to Russia using North Korean troops in this war," Stubb said.
However, Stubb added that the presence of North Korean troops must first be properly verified.

Advice to the youths. Iirc March and April etc are around the time teenagers are getting acceptance letters and choosing their colleges, right? Yeah, OK.
A college is a business and you are a customer. You are not getting married. Your college is not your soulmate. Don't let college Marketing talk you into thinking your college choice is a deep reflection of your identity. If you don't get into the one you want, you'll be fine. If you get into your top choice and then you don't like it, it's NO BIG DEAL. You can tranfer. You can take some time off.
Take it from someone who went to three different schools over the course of nine years, changing schools happens all the time. I thought my first and second colleges were my soulmates, but actually we just dated a while. College one was frigid and withholding and college two (metaphorically) lit my mattress on fire. College three wasn't what I thought I wanted at all, but I didn't go in expecting to fall in love with it or build my life and identity around it, I went in expecting to get a degree, and that's exactly what I got.
PS. If you get to college and start having mental health problems (also like me) they will follow you from school to school. You can't transfer and leave your depression behind because colleges won't solve your problems. (but you could try to pick one with better mental health services)

And Here's What You Really Missed: Chris Colfer Edition
Okay - so, I won’t normally do a podcast recap this long - but I really wanted to be thorough because this was the interview with Chris.  The indentations are the recap portion.  Anything in brackets are my personal thoughts - in case you want to skip over that.  I tried to do as little editorializing in the recap portion as I could.
-Snixxmas is Back
-Kevin and Jenna’s intro - still consider Chris a bestie, and like with the Ryan convo - they’re glad they’re able to have such honest and open conversations with their guests.
[I think, so far, with both Ryan and Chris, these conversations are incredibly more honest than I’d expect? It does feel like friends remembering things, and not like a PR/soundbyte kind of convo.  I think it’s incredibly refreshing, and -- while I haven’t been shocked by anything, I feel like I have context and clarification to a lot of things that were rumors and speculations of fandom.]
-Jenna wanted to skip right into a deeper conversation - skipping the usual convo surrounding Chris, where he talks about his audition and how RM created a part for him.  Chris joked about who he should send the therapy bill to -- Kevin said RM Productions.
[Interestingly - one of the things we don’t get clarification on in this podcast is how Chris feels towards RM at this time.  I don’t think it was specifically avoided, I think it didn’t organically come up.  Who knows? But I’m sure Chris will be back on in future podcasts.]
-Kevin asks about how he got the audition - especially since the rest of them had industry connections, and Chris had zero connections.  Chris replies that a family friend knew an agent in LA, and he began doing auditions when he was a Freshman in HS.  (Retells how he got turned down for a part in That’s So Raven.) Chris recounts that his parents were very supportive - and jokes that he didn’t have a social life, so the three hour drives from Fresno to LA weren’t that big a deal.
-Chris recounts that moving to LA and being thrown in at such a young age (he was 18 - just out of HS) was a shocking experience.  He was starstruck by even his costars - Kevin having been in a band, Jenna in Spring Awakening.
-Chris told his parents that they would not be coming to LA with him.  Partly because he didn’t want people to think he had stage parents.  Partly because he wanted to be out on his own.
-Chris and Jenna spent nearly every day together while filming the Pilot since they were the two from out of town.  Stayed at the Grove and watched movies every night and spent a lot of time at the cheesecake factory.
-Jenna asks if Chris always knew he wanted to be both an actor and a writer, or if those ambitions came at different times.  Chris says that they were always the same thing to him, and it wasn’t until he was older that he figured out there was a difference between acting and writing.  But he’s always wanted to do both. Kevin jokes that it took him until being a teenager to figure out they were different jobs, and jokes that Chris has always been more advanced than him.
-Jenna remembers Chris writing his own pilot for Kurt - incase the show didn’t get picked up.  (They mention that Chris, Jenna, Kevin, and Amber hung out a lot in the early days -- they called those nights ‘Jack’ nights -- Jenna, Amber, Chris, and Kevin’.) It was then she realized just how talented Chris was. Kevin says he doesn’t remember that pilot - even though Chris said he wrote it at Kevin’s place.  Kevin carefully admits that oftentimes they ‘partying’ while hanging out - and often under the influence of alcohol.
[Later - they’ll bring up Glee feeling like college - and it’s something I’ve always thought about when considering these kids at this age.  All of this part of the reminiscing reminds me of my own college days - I was never a big partier or big with alcohol, but there’s something about that age where you just try things -- especially when you’re in the safety of your own home and with people you trust.  Everything about their experiences screams college
]
-Kevin goes into how he and Chris auditioned at the same time, and rode up in the same elevator.  Kevin was trying to go into the audition process with a friendlier attitude -- was super nice with Chris when they met, and helped him navigate the audition process.  Was still like ‘you’ve got to be kidding me’ when he saw that Chris had the same Artie/Rajeesh sides as him. Kevin genuinely thought Chris was incredibly nice and friendly -- and after figuring out that Chris was going in for a different part of ‘Kurt’ Kevin felt they could be actual friends.
-Chris jokes that taking out Rajeesh wouldn’t fly today - ‘them taking out a POC to put my pasty ass in’.
[To anyone who doesn’t know -- there was an original character named Rajeesh in the script, who essentially had all of the lines that went to Kurt.  Rajeesh (I don’t think) wasn’t a gay character - weird to think that the only gay character in the original script was Sandy
]
-Jenna jokes that out of the three of them, only she would be cast today since Kevin wouldn’t be cast as a kid in a wheelchair.
-Chris was driving back to Clovis after the audition when they got the call that he was cast.  His mom had to pull over because they were screaming they were so excited. Chris had a gut feeling that this pilot would be picked up and this would be his thing.  Kevin felt the same way about it. Lea has a (secret) showing of the pilot -- and they had a discussion as to whether or not the pilot would be picked up.  It never crossed Kevin’s mind that it wouldn’t because he liked the show so much and because they all had a blast together.  Chris mentions that it was the first time that he had seen a show about kids just like him - every theater kid in the world was going to love the show.
[I’m super curious about that
I know, though, being a theater/band/music/fine arts kid, it did speak to me even if I was an adult by the time it aired.]
-Jenna asks what it was like, at the stage of doing the pilot, what it was like playing a gay character when he wasn’t out at the time.  Chris says, while his hometown has come very far since then (2008), it was dangerous for people to be out at the time - there was even a kid who had gotten stabbed for being out.  It wasn’t until he got the script that he knew Kurt was the gay character and he was absolutely terrified.  He had a family member (not his parents - who were supportive) ask if he really wanted to do this - because it would ruin his life to do this.  He wanted to be a part of the industry and out of Clovis so badly that he felt like he no other option.  He also knew it would force him to ask questions of himself that he hadn’t been ready to do. He’s grateful, in a way, that he was thrust into it - because it forced him to come to terms with himself.
-[Like RM], Chris was also told by people within the industry that playing a gay character would ruin his character, but he reiterates that he felt it was something he had to do.
[I feel like there’s a bigger conversation to be had about how much the times have changed even in the last ten years.  You couldn’t be out when I was a teen in the late 90s.  RM’s world was even worse.  I think Glee feels somewhat dated now - but omg, was it a huge deal back in the day
the positive response to the gay characters left a footprint
 anyway
 ]
-Kevin asks Chris if it felt like a judgment on him that they wrote this character for him who was gay.  Chris responds ‘oh absolutely’. They joke that they all just assumed Chris was gay, but they were also right (they have a good laugh over it.) Chris jokes that he was much more effeminate when he was younger and that now life has hardened him so he’s less so.
[Another interesting observation - as even in early interviews, I don’t think Chris has ever seemed as effeminate as Kurt -- and interestingly, Kurt became less effeminate as time went on -- if I had to guess as I’ve talked about other places, though, Kurt was much more the RM mold in the beginning and Chris’s influence throughout the years made him less so even by season 2.]
-Chris admits that he was called ‘faggot’ every day during HS, and that he just couldn’t hide his sexuality.  But he wasn’t ready to have the conversation with himself or with anyone he knew about if he was actually gay or not. He says it’s interesting to reflect about it -- since the world has come so far, and since he’s come so far [being comfortable with his sexuality] that it’s hard to remember what it was like back then.  But he was so excited about getting a job that that took ultimate precedence.
-They kind of shift into the conversation about having the best time at the beginning - doing the show and having fun.  They’d have all done it for free.  Jenna remembers Chris being so enamored of her being in Spring Awakening that it made her appreciate where she had come from more.  She also says she was aware of how young and naive he was - being thrust into the industry that she felt very protective of him.  Kevin says they all felt that way, and Chris says that he was the baby brother of the group.
-The talk about the first times they all used to hang out -- at Kevin and Jenna’s place back when they did the front 13.  Kevin recounts a time when Amber leaned out the window to smoke - because it was very high up, but also he was aghast for her voice.
-Kevin asking if Jenna had the same experience on Spring Awakening as they did with Glee -- since this was the first time Kevin had been a part of a cast like this.  Jenna says Glee was different - especially in the beginning because they moved from outside LA -- their world was Glee.  She did encounter some of the young drama with SA - but Glee was a new experience, especially since she wasn’t a part of the original cast of SA.
-Kevin asks Chris if this was the first time he had a core group of friends that he ever did anything with.  Chris essentially says yes -- he was a goody-two shoes in HS that this was the first time he was experiencing normal college aged shenanigans.  Chris jokes that he was never invited to the parties back in HS - Kevin (kindly) says they didn’t know what they were missing.  Chris jokes that they weren’t interested in the European history lectures he’d often dish out and Kevin sweetly says that they were there for it.  Chris continues to say that he didn’t have a lot of friends growing up - some when he was younger and doing community theater but not in HS. Chris goes on to state (again) that he was close to the lunch ladies and teachers and that the Glee kids were his first group of close friends his own age.
-Jenna teases that she’s sorry about that. And Chris states that it explains a lot about him that they made an impactful imprint on him.  Kevin jokes that they all have residual trauma.
[And this is the part that makes my dead heart swell a bit - you can kind of tell that Chris isn’t bffs with Kevin and Jenna as in they spend every waking moment with each other -- but they are a family from this shared experience and that they do truly all care about one another.]
-Kevin suddenly remembers the fact that Chris would have night terrors when they all would crash at someone’s place.  Chris laughs about it - stating he still has them, but not as bad.  The night terrors used to freak out Kevin and he’d console Chris back to sleep ‘it’s just the Jaeger’ (lol).
-Kevin turns the conversation to how he and Chris used to use instant messenger to talk with each other - specifically about being gay (they joke about how back then chat rooms were the only safe place to come out to people).  And that they confided in each other pretty early about both being gay.
[This where the conversation takes a fascinating turn - and then Jenna interrupts to tell a story about how adamant Chris was to find a washer and dryer in his first apartment - it was his one criteria for finding a place. And then it goes into Chris’s fears about laundromats - and he talks about his first job at a dry cleaners.  And as cute a story as it is - I was like, omg, let’s get back to talking gossip about Kevin and Chris.  Jenna, though, to her credit, does bring it back.]
-Kevin says that they didn’t outrightly come out to each other, but slowly unraveled their experience levels in dating men.  Kevin talks about having a close friend from HS being a confidant as to being gay - and Kevin wanted to give Chris a safe place to talk about such things if he needed to.  Kevin goes on to say, though, that the four of them (Kevin, Jenna, Amber, and Chris) were close enough anyway that it sort of all came out between them.
[Little bit of fandom lore injection - even before Kevin came out publicly, it was often rumored that Kevin and Chris had a fling - and when Kevin did come out - I have to wonder if some of those people I used to get info from (yes there was a deep network of people who did have connections to the cast/crew/industry/etc) were well aware that Kevin was gay.  You can also tell -- if you’re able to go way back and watch the super early interviews bbChris felt comfortable with Amber and Kevin more than anyone else.  After the pilot (and that mall tour) stuff, Kevin and Chris were somewhat split up -- Kevin going with the guys and Chris often paired with Amber for PR stuff, but it’s interesting what you can pick up on after watching a thousand interviews -- which I did when I first entered fandom.
Fwiw - based on this conversation, I don’t think Kevin and Chris hooked up.]
-Jenna goes on to admit her crush on Kevin, and talks about the time Chris put a picture of Kevin in her underwear drawer.  (Chris reminds them that he was indeed the little brother.)
-Jenna asks about what it was like when Preggers came out - and if Chris felt supported putting the story line of Kurt coming out - out there.  Chris honestly says that, beyond the group of them, there wasn’t a whole lot of support for him in the industry.   Chris talks about the kid from Heartstopper who recently was forced out of the closet - and wanted to send him a note saying he understood how he felt because it happened to him and because it’s such a unique situation (but ultimately didn’t because he didn’t want to be weird about it.)
-Chris states that coming out is one of the best decisions he’s ever made for himself, and says that he thinks it’s good for people to do so -- but he is also realistic in understanding that sometimes coming out puts your career and safety at risk, and pushing someone out is a terrible thing. He notes, though, how much support the kid from Heartstopper has gotten - and it’s proof that society has come a long way from when he went through it.
-He notes that when he was pushed out - people telling him that he deserved it, that it was obvious, and that he should have known what he was getting into (which Kevin and Jenna agree was a horrible thing.) Chris also says he wasn’t ashamed of anything when he did come out - but he also didn’t have enough experiences to know what he was - and wanted to have those experiences before he labeled himself.
-Chris talks about that even while Glee was airing - he would get called a ‘faggot’ by casting directors and other producers at auditions he went on.  He says if that happened now, thankfully, people would be getting their pitchforks out.
[Note how this is similar to Ryan’s stories from earlier podcasts? Hollywood has some deep embedded homophobia in it -- still I’m sure.]
-Kevin goes on to talk about Chris’s public coming out on Chelsea Handler
[Fandom lore interjection -- when I first heard the story about this, I had read/or was told that Naya and Cory went to the Chelsea Handler set to support him because it was planned that he was going to come out.  People recently have been telling me it was Naya and Kevin.  But based on Kevin’s memory and reaction - I don’t know if that’s true, and wonder if my original understanding of it was that Cory was there and not Kevin.  Not relevant - just thinking out loud about old fandom stuff.
-Chris goes on to talk about how as PR move to stay in front of the story, he planned to officially come out publicly on Chelsea Handler.  He goes on to say that a publication during the first season [omg i think I remember this tbh] published without confirming that Chris was out. He had not come out to himself or his parents at that point and was terrified.  He was also terrified that people would think he was Kurt - and not realize that he was acting.  Then later, he would somewhat dodge the question when asked and people would get furious at him over it.  Eventually, he wanted to take control of it and went on Chelsea Handler to set things straight.
-’I would rather be the unicorn than the elephant in the room’- Chris Colfer (Let’s get that on a throw pillow)
[Just need to interject about Chris being adamant that people did not think he was Kurt.  Beyond the discussion over being gay, Chris and having his own individuality has always been important to him, and part of the issue arising from the whole Klaine phenomenon and the Tinhat issues is that those lines were blurred.  I’ll have more to say on all of this in a bit when Chris brings up Klaine in a little bit.]
-Kurt (and Chris coming out) was also getting a lot of positive response, too -- especially from young people going through the same thing.  It was a lot for Chris to shoulder.  Jenna asks about how heavy a burden it must have been to shoulder that responsibility.  Chris admits that in his personal life, he was having a very hard time navigating being a young man just coming out in an industry who thought less of him for it, but hearing people’s positive stories helped him through it.
-Chris admits that in his youthful (I say naivety - he says arrogance) he felt like had to live up to the fantasy he was portraying on screen, trying to always be positive, which was often hard.  He was getting death threats - and then having to put on a smile and act fierce was difficult.  He says that he’ll probably write a memoir about all of it someday.
-Suffered from agoraphobia for a while because of it -- Kevin and Jenna both remember.  Kevin remembers times when they went out and people were next level with Chris.  People would physically touch him, and Kevin comments on how he is possibly the most introverted of the cast members, so it was next level invasive for him.  Kevin continues - talking about how daily life changes, and more so for Chris and his recognizability - and how people felt like they had an ownership over him.  Chris went even more inward and found it suffocating.  Kevin and Jenna both felt protective over him - and Chris thanks them for that.  They mention going to Australia for the press tour, and feeling like they landed in a different world when they came back.
-Kevin recounts how they went to a gay club (in Arizona) - Chris mentions he climbed the spiderweb (which I assume was some netting on the wall or something) and that they each had a boy they were interested in, but the boys went home with each other.
-Jenna asks [a question I’ve been wondering myself, tbh] if Chris was resentful about Kevin’s situation - getting to stay in the closet because Artie was straight.  Chris admits, honestly, that he was -- not at Kevin, but at the situation, and that he had to be out and Kevin could remain private.  Chris comments on (at the time - I feel like this is key to this whole conversation, too, a lot of things have changed since then) how there was an underworld gay community that Chris couldn’t be a part of because he was so out and recognizable - but Kevin could be a part of cause he was closeted.
-Chris talks about the fact that at the time, he was pulled out of pictures by publicists of other famous people because they didn’t want rumors to start about him with the other person.
-Chris talks about not going on his first date until he was twenty.
[Which not to knock on his hard times, cause they were very real, but I just think it’s a little funny, out of context, because there are plenty of people who don’t go on dates until they hit their twenties
]
-Chris talks about his first real date being on the night of the grammys, and he missed the grammys purposely so he could go on it.  (It worked out - Chord could go on in his place.)
[Just in case you wanted to know - it was Feb, 13th 2011.  Interestingly, Chris would meet his long term partner, Will, a year and a half later.]
-Kevin says at the time (I think he’s talking about post-Preggers? I’m not entirely sure about the timeline here) was the first time he felt any of the cast pull away -- and had to ask Amber if Chris was upset at him.  Amber explained that Chris was going through a lot, and Kevin felt better because that core friendship between the four of them was very important to him.  Kevin also admits that he wanted to give Chris space - because he knew he was representative of a lifestyle Chris couldn’t live at the time.
-Kevin also admits of being slightly envious of him - because Chris was pushed to confront his sexuality, where Kevin just wasn’t ready to reconcile his personal life and his professional life yet. But when he saw what Chris was going through - decided it better to stay quiet about it.
-Jenna makes [a fantastic] point where for a while she wondered if Kevin was going to ever be public with the knowledge but then reminds herself that it’s not for everyone to know - and that Kevin didn’t owe the media or the public anything.  But, for the sake of her friend, wanted him to be honest with himself about the situation.
-Kevin also admits that there were some executives (whom he won’t name) of the show -- one telling him that it was his responsibility to come out (claiming that the secrecy of it is often fetishized (yeesh), the other telling him to never do it.  And he was often inwardly dealing with those conflicting thoughts.
-Chris says that he, too, was told never to come out -- that he’ll never be cast in things if he says it, and should always play it as a mystery. He was told to have a fake girlfriend - which he figured no one would ever believe.  Kevin admits that Jenna was his fake girlfriend during the early years.
[Also, not brought up here - but I remember Chris saying once that he’d never have female fans if he came out -- which is kind of hilarious as the teenage girls flocked to him]
-Jenna asks about Mike O’Malley - and Chris working with him.  Chris said it was a dream to work with him. He said while Klaine took off - he found Kurt and Burt’s relationship the more important one.  He’d have grown, straight men come to him in tears telling him how much that relationship meant to him because it helped them connect with their kids. Chris finds it the best part of the show.  Kevin and Jenna agree - saying that it was the heart of the show, more so than the high school relationships.
-Chris was originally furious about the ending of Preggers - he wanted to have his Emmy moment. Kevin joked that he got to cry all the time [Fun fact - it was much less than you might think - I did a post on it!] Kevin said it gave him a complex as to how good Chris was at it.
-Chris goes on to say that the stuff with Burt and Finn in Season 1 were more real - and that made him resent the stuff with Klaine being more fantasy/fairy tale like.  He goes on to say that gay people go through a lot in high school - and finding a soul mate at fifteen is not something a lot of people can resonate with.
-Jenna comments that she wasn’t privy to a lot of the Klaine stuff, cause she wasn’t around, and neither she or Kevin got to work much with both Chris and Darren at the same time, but it occurs to her that it was very fairy tale like - and that it was probably RM’s fantastical version of high school.
[She is right - I’m pretty sure Ryan had said so himself at some point.  The stuff about Chris and Klaine probably deserves its own post - I’m not going to dig deep here.  But mostly the tl:dr version is that A) I completely understand what Chris is saying, and why he felt the way he did -- and respect that he does feel that way.  B) The reason a lot of people did like Klaine was due to the fairy tale aspect of it. C) I think that we are past the point of using the ‘Chris hates Klaine’ blanket statement to justify whether or not liking Klaine is good or bad. D) I have a lot more thoughts on all of this - but will only bore y’all if you want to hear about it.]
-Kevin comes into say that Burt and Kurt and Klaine are fulfilling wishful relationships - the father/son dynamic you never get and the relationship in high school you never get.
-Chris kinda laughs it all off, but stays a big quiet on all of it [which makes sense]
-Jenna changes the subject [which is abrupt - but I kind of wonder if it’s less about Chris wanting to change the subject, and more about their time running out and needing to plug Chris’s work before their time is up] to Chris’s writing.  Kevin says he makes them seem lazy.  They also joke that they text Chris and he often says he’s writing.  But they do bump into him out on the town from time to time.  Jenna goes on to congratulate Chris on his ten years of writing - and the sheer amount of work he’s written.  And Chris is currently writing number 19.
-Kevin remembers how astounded he was that Chris wrote a full movie a year or two into Glee.  He also remembers that the rest of the cast was just doing nothing in particular, and Chris was busy writing his first book.
-Jenna asks about when his stories started coming to him.  Chris goes into his spiel about Alex and Conner being a part of him from a young age - and how when he was younger he would always ask more about the fairy tale characters, etc.  His mom told him to start writing instead of asking her so many questions.  So he did.  He continues to talk about when his sister was sick he could use his writing as a way of escape.  He then talks about how when Glee was just heavy on him again, he used writing to escape again - and how The Land of Stories saved him twice.
[Which
I get that kiddo, I really do.]
-He then goes on to say that instead of doing a memoir - which he was approached to do, he asked to do TLOS instead.  Jenna continues to be blown away by his talent and prolificness.  Jenna says she can barely put on shoes and he’s written all of those books - though Chris jokes that he’s written them all barefoot.  Kevin then comes in saying that it’s impressive that Jenna made a human, and Chris agrees that it’s impressive that she did that.  Kevin says he’s the one that doesn’t have anything to show for anything.  Chris jokes that Jenna’s child will take care of her when she’s older - the books won’t do shit for him.  Though Jenna reminds him the checks will.
-Kevin asks if Chris has a favorite song -- then amends it to least favorite.  [I’m slightly bummed - I would have loved to know what his favorite was.]  Chris starts out by saying that Umbrella was rough due to the technical aspects of it.  Also - Ben.  Because of all the songs out of MJ’s catalog - this is the one he’s singing to his lover.  The one about the rat.
[Lol - omg, yeah
]
-Jenna brings up Let’s Have a Kiki/Turkey Lurkey Time -- Chris [who has stated one of his favorite bands is Scissor Sisters] was so upset about that because he had worked for years to get the number on the show.  Kevin jokes that he’s the one sending RM hate mail (a call to the previous podcast where RM said he had no regrets over the number.) Chris said he had to go to the band and apologize for the number.
-Chris then brings up Thriller being the worst one overall - that everyone hates the most.  He wasn’t there so he can’t fully say.  He was warm in his trailer watching The Parent Trap with Romy Rosemont and Dot Marie Jones.  [forever laughing at that]  Kevin and Jenna are jealous.  Kevin then mentions that there were pitfalls to suggesting songs - because he really wanted to do MJ - but that number was a nightmare to shoot.
-Jenna says they’re recapping Showmance soon.  Chris says it’s better than the pilot [I agree - at least I think I agree - did I rank it higher? Lol]  They discuss Push It - and the outrageous things they had to do with each other.  Kevin remembers that they practiced it with varying degrees of sluttiness - and having to perform it for the crew early one morning - and how weird that was.  Chris brings up Jenna’s swamp hands?  Idk.
-Last thing is talking about Chris’s Golden Globe win.  Jenna recounts watching Chris and how the color left his face.  Chris jokes that there wasn’t much color to begin with.  Kevin says he turned into Casper and you could see right through him.  They talk about how both Dianna and Ashley had to push him to go up on stage - he was so shocked.  Chris says he has no memory of it - it was an out of body experience.  He had gone through something similar at the Emmys - where he was projected to win and didn’t.  But then was told he wasn’t going to win the Globe and did.
-His biggest thing about the Globes was how could he drink Champagne without getting caught cause he was only twenty at the time.
-Jenna loves that at the end of his speech he said ‘screw that kids’ which was an amazing punctuation.  Chris has no idea where it came from, and while he’s glad his speech and debate training came in handy, he has no idea where the speech came from.  He also recounts screwing up a line - saying that the cast owe him, instead of them deserving the globe as well. Kevin was also worried for him - but knew he shouldn’t be, cause Chris is so quick witted.  Chris is just glad he didn’t shit his pants. Kevin was just in awe of one of his friends winning something.  Chris is glad the Globes are back, cause his award isn’t canceled anymore.
-They end by saying they how grateful they are for Chris to come join them.  Chris says that they’ve always got his back, and is grateful they gave him a safe space to talk - and they all say that they love each other.  Kevin jokes by saying if he has any more night terrors, he can come on the podcast and air it.
-They then joke about how Night Terrors would be a good name for a horror podcast.  They’ll have to rope in Amber and start a new podcast.
[Okay, phew, that’s the podcast! Look - I really loved it.  Chris seemed to be relaxed and in good humor -- especially since a lot of this was about really heavy things.  You can tell there’s a solid foundation of friendship and respect between Chris, Kevin, and Jenna.  I’m sure this won’t be the only time we hear from him on the show.]
