It's Friday! Chapter 16 of Mystic Dream, Act 3 Scene 2: And Dancing - Tuesday 15 January 2019 19:31 is up.

Here's a teaser:

Bishop watched Duke, the lead guitarist change his electric guitar for an acoustic. As the applause died down and all the dancers in the center of the hall turned back to the stage, he began playing a series of mournful notes. Bishop’s attention snapped to the Potters when Ginny stepped closer to Harry, resting her head on his chest.

‘A tango,’ gasped Patil, and Bishop nodded.

‘Sorry, we aren’t going to try that. I can’t tango for the life of me,’ she replied, keeping Patil in her arms and beginning a slow dance anyway, staying close to the Potters but continuing to turn her partner around to watch the crowd. A few other couples also began to tango. Most simply swayed in time to the music’s beat. 

‘Now they’re making love in public,’ Torres’ voice cracked in their ears after the Potters paused for their leg flicks, Ginny’s left leg flashing out through the slit in her gown. ‘Damn, she’s got legs!’

Bishop caught a glimpse of Gibbs, frowning on the sideline, nodding quickly at Harry, and Harry’s nod in reply.

‘Torres, eyes on the crowd. This will be their last dance before a break.’ Gibbs' voice in her ear made her resume scanning the crowd.

For the Record

I’ve said before that I’ve generally been a multi-shipper in the fandoms I’ve read in the past (Merlin, HP, NCIS, SGA, Teen Wolf mostly). And, if I find an author I really like, I’ll read any ship they write about even if it’s one I don’t normally read—because then it’s about a good author writing consistently good stories, so I’m willing to risk it.

I predominantly ship Buddie. I think most everyone in this fandom has shipped Buddie at some point, really, which is why the sudden divide is so brain-boggling (as is the sudden Eddie-hate, which just appalls me).

I’ve drifted away from Buck/Tommy fic this summer and back towards Buddie simply because it resonates with me more. My attitude towards BT as an end-state for Buck is just kind of “Meh.” I don’t hate it; I’m not against it; but :::Big Shrug::: And a lot of the BT fic being posted is “fluff”/“slice of life” (which I don’t normally read no matter what the pairing/not pairing) or radically AU (which I may come back to if it’s well-rated, but, again, not my first choice for a pairing I’m not really that into).

As I said above, if a favorite author puts out a BT fic, I’m going to read it. If someone posts something to Tumblr that’s amazing BT art, or a particularly well-put-together edit, or says something that re-emphasizes canon lore because people are misinterpreting it…well, I’ll probably reblog it.

So, this blog is pro-Buddie, but it’s not anti-BT, either. I mostly share Buddie content (and my cats and knitting/crocheting), but that doesn’t mean there won’t be occasional high-quality BT content.

Why a Sneak Peek?

One of the things I've seen other writers do is post Sneak Peaks. I've not done that, partially because I've not been on Tumblr long, partially because I'm pants at self-promotion, and partially because I lean hard towards not showing work until it's done. That said… However I know Breanie ( @breaniebree ) through a couple writer/fan groups on Discord. While she worked on A Second Chance (go read, fabulous work, eh) she started asking me questions related to injuries, health care, and such. Because the Healer in my name is for real; I am a Registered Nurse. Breanie sort of introduced me to Sam ( @seriouslysam8 ). Another really good writer, you need to go read Brumous, Bete Noire, and Backstabber. Particularly if you love angst. Yes. The inevitable took place then, Sam asked a few questions about injuries and first aid, specifying magic couldn't be used. And honestly, I really enjoyed reading the chapter in Brumous where the answers showed up. Nicely done! Then I started thinking about something I need for my WiP, Mystic Dream. The Potter's (Ginny and Harry) are away on a trip, bit of a busman's holiday because Harry is attending an international law enforcement conference (with of course a secret magical group of sessions), while Ginny is interviewing some American magical athletes for a book she's working on. And things happen. For a part of this, because the Potters have been here (this particular place in the US) before, I placed one of their favorite places to eat, a pizzaria. They don't get to eat there often, but for two reasons this is one of their top faves. And I needed a name, and didn't want to use O Sole Mio because I'd used that in Proposals already. Did I mention I like puns? And after a convo with Sam I looked at her name. And I asked her a question. And she said Yes, Sure. This leads to why I'm posting, for the first time maybe ever (there might be some one-liners in response to ask memes, I'm not counting those), a Sneak Peek. Quick summary, how to surprise other characters and help develop one of the major charactgers by using one of Major Character's know skills…

Harry nodded, punching buttons on his phone. ‘Wait,’ Gibbs commanded. Harry looked up.

‘We need to do this, now,’ he said, as Gibbs looked at the notepad on Kasie’s counter.

‘Yes, we do,’ Gibbs flipped his phone open, fingers punching numbers. ‘But they know your Great Britain number, they’ll know it’s you calling.’ He held out his phone. ‘Use mine.’

Ginny took Gibbs’ phone before Harry could. ‘They also know your voice, Harry. “I’ve seen your face before.” They won’t know mine.’

‘They threatened you, Ginny,’ Gibbs said. ‘They know you as well.’

Ginny smiled, winking at Harry, who matched her mischievous grin.

‘Not when she speaks, they won’t,’ he said.

Gibbs looked between them both, Bishop’s brow furrowed, her frown growing deeper when she saw Patil smirk as well. Patil caught her eye, raising her own eyebrows. Then Gibbs nodded.

‘Nobody else make a noise. At all. Kasie, record the call. McGee, are you ready?’

McGee nodded. Kasie’s eyes widened as she quickly prepared a microphone, anticipating what was coming. Gibbs nodded to Ginny.

Ginny pushed the dial and speakerphone buttons, and a ringtone filled the room. Once. Twice. Thrice. Four– ‘Hello.’ The same gravelly voice.

‘Yeah, this is Eljay with Seriously, Sam 8Pizza,’ Ginny said, ‘and I’m trying to deliver the Super Supreme you ordered. Having trouble finding your place, it doesn’t want to come up on my MappApp. I’m at Tennessee and E Street Northeast. Could you give me directions?’

Bishop’s jaw dropped when Gibb’s voice came out of Ginny Potter’s mouth. She glanced quickly around the room, Kasie and Torres both wearing surprised faces as well, McGee focused on the workstation where he worked to triangulate the call. Patil smirked at her. Gibbs and Potter simply focused on the phone in Ginny’s hand. Those three knew, she thought. They knew!

Silence stretched a few beats before the gravelly voice spoke again. ‘I didn’t order a pizza.’

‘Oh, come on, man! Says right here on the slip, Super Supreme, Nony Mousse, but then the damn slip got wet and the ink smeared. It looks like one something something maybe six E Street Northeast, but they said they didn’t order pizza either. Seriously, it’s getting close to being a free pizza for you because I can’t find your place. Just give me directions, please.’

Silence again, seconds feeling like hours. Then a laugh like gravel on steel. ‘Too bad for you then, I guess you get a pizza for lunch.’

Ooh, cool! Thank you so much for the long reply! A lot of this was genuinely completely new to me -- I'd never known there were ongoing discussions that early, but of course it makes complete sense there were, both on LJ and predating it. I think it also goes to show how well we could self-segregate on LJ, I think moreso than we can now.

I think, in retrospect, that a lot of my experiences with 2000s fandom can be summed up with, 'I was a teenager' and thus wanted to be 'cool'. There was a lot of 'not like other girls'-ism going on in those sporking and Mary Sue comms, and I always just assumed we were all teenagers -- it certainly felt that way. The few people I've kept in touch with from those days have largely grown out of it, though it doesn't surprise to hear there were (and probably still are) grown adults who shit on others' fanfics.

(As an addendum, I could add that slashfic and that sort of 'canon non-compliance' was completely okay in the fandom spaces I ran in back then, but people would get very upset about extremely arbitrary things-- 'transfer students' in HP, changing characters' ages, making up a minor oc side character for plot purposes because all ocs were apparently bad (and especially if female), etc. It was strange which hairs people decided to split.)

Anyway! Thank you VERY much for such a long and in-depth reply! It's cool to see how these things have changed and developed, and I'm glad to see my experience wasn't emblematic of fandom as a whole.

Thanks for such a thought-provoking question! It really got me thinking about how Livejournal was really excellent at creating different sort of pockets of experiences, and in a while is really reflective as proto-social media of like, the big echo chambers we have happening now all across social media! That's really interesting to think about.

For me, it's funny, most of the fandom folks I knew were all older than me, many were in their 40s and 50s while I was in my 20s. Very few teens comparatively were attracted to certain fandoms like The X-Files and NCIS some of the other spaces I was in, so while there were definitely teens, it was like... a different feeling. Like, even these days I find it fascinating how there are 'younger' fandoms (in terms of how many younger folk are in it) and 'older' fandoms.

And yeah you're so right about people getting upset about arbitrary things! And also that um, 'not like other girls' which now itself is kind of mocked by fandom, so things really did come full circle on that front where now it's not cool to be one of the people who says that x.x

Honestly it's hard to be a teenager on the internet! All the things that play out like... all the dynamics, a lot just play out online instead, and they still exist. A person still wants to be cool and accepted and liked (and that's not age specific, like, most of us want a degree of at least some of these lol), and cliques can form very quickly. I remember how bad it felt back then even in my 20s when I got unfriended by a mutual who I thought was a really good friend, that stuff was devastating!

Ahaha this is one of the reasons I still sometimes have like apologetic tones in some of my comments about the amount of OCs I add, because yeah that was really disapproved of! I remember that and I still have like... shades of that at times. I'm mostly over it now, but oof I remember the first time I did it and I was like 'is this okay *chews on fingernails* I bet people will hate this because of it.' (And then that turned into Fae Tales so).

The Mary Sue stuff was really aggressively unpacked, like in very popular kind of fandom-friendly journalism spaces at the time, I mean that's how we ended up with the journalism site 'The Mary Sue' in the first place. People really took a stand on that one. In a way, we were all kind of looking at our own attitudes, like, *why* is it bad to do this, or *what* does it mean that a girl feels like they can't be like other girls - is that internalised misogyny (and sometimes it was), and I miss that kind of meta discussion because I do feel it happens a little less now.

There was a time when I didn't like Mary Sues, no one did, though I think that was before I found my first meta community where it was like 'oh people are talking about EVERYTHING I thought was like universally accepted in fandom.' Though we never got that far on how racist fandom could be, which is still an issue, but one that does get talked about (it would just be nice if AO3 talked about it too).

I sadly think a lot of people in their 40s and 50s can act a lot like teenagers in fandom spaces sometimes, some of the antis in like teenage spaces today are like 40s kind of 'guiding them along' this path of moral puritanical righteousness and almost role-modelling how to bully others. And some of the folks running public Sporking blogs were like... older folks who fostered connections to younger folk.

Anyway, it's so interesting to think of all the different pockets we ended up in. I'm sure there's like countless more that we both have no experience of, where someone else would be like 'oh I was in LJ fandom what's a Mary Sue?' and that would be entirely legitimate too. Sometimes it's easy (I fall into this trap) to think of historical fandom as being one thing instead of like a thousand things. So yeah, this was cool! Thank you :D

So, here’s the deal.

My favorite 9-1-1 ship is Buddie. Why? Because while I can imagine Buck with any number of other people (and I’m talking about existing characters, not some Natalisol brought in at the 11th hour), I really can’t imagine Eddie with anyone but Buck.

I can imagine Eddie thriving as a single and telling off Tia Pepa and finding a hobby while sharing his kid with Buck and whoever Buck ends up with before I can imagine him with any random character. The showrunners would have to make a concerted effort to develop a character and make me like them (neutral pronoun intended) before I’d like them with Eddie.

And, while I tend to post about Buddie, I’m hiding from my students’ end-of-semester papers by reading all the great Buck/Tommy fic out there. I’ve also been known to enjoy Buck/Lou (Ransone) and Buck/S4 Taylor (I.e. as she was characterized before the S5 mid-season break), plus the rare Buck/Josh. And I’m not against poly, either. I’ve read that, too. Buck is really the LBD of the 9-1-1 fandom, just as Tony tends to be for NCIS, and Harry for HP.

Hell, if he wasn’t too old at this point, I’d ship Buck with NCIS Tony. Now that would be hot.

New Year, belated new status post

I am tentatively going to try to make 2024 the year where I finish some old fics.

I am also working on a lot of new soulmate HP crossover fics.

Tony DiNozzo(NCIS)

Homelander(The Boys) -- this is still cooking; haven't picked out the soulmate trope yet

I am also working on a 5+1 fic with Cole and hopefully plan on finishing it before posting it. (can you tell I've been watching Charmed?)

I need to rework the intro to my Harry/Loki 5+1 fic but that shouldn't take too long.

I have a Harrie/Jax story that is demanding to be written where SAMCRO is a werewolf pack.

I'm planning a Harry/Olivia Benson blind date one shot.

Anyway, that's the plan for 2024.

(Also...I may or may not be planning for kinktober 2024. I'll keep you guys posted)
