THE TALE OF THE OLD SEED
Originally posted 12/12/2023

Cora quirked a brow, "…?"
Ursus who was drawing nearby, furrowed his brows, trying to recall his French, "…Old seed?"
"Mm!" Ivy replied excitedly, "His real name was Ghyslain Benoît De Flon, and he was the oldest person to ever be accepted to Hogwarts. He was 84 year old when they finally awarded him his Hogwarts letter." She continued, "De Flon was a Muggleborn, who lived a whole lifetime as a normal Muggle. Apparently his life had been so very mundane, and he himself so mild mannered, that he had never worked up the emotional exuberance to perform wild magic. And so he was never detected for 84 long years."
"Then, one fateful day, while waiting for the train in Gare de Lyon, someone thoughtlessly bumped him from behind, sending him down onto the tracks, right in front of the oncoming train! In that instance, De Flon performed his first ever act of magic: Teleporting himself all the way from Lyon to his home in Montpellier where his wife found him passed out in their front yard missing three fingers!"
She wiggled her pointer, middle and ring fingers on her right hand, "The French Ministry was in an uproar, believing De Flon to be a spy, but eventually the truth came out much to everyone's shock. De Flon and his family were then brought into the wizarding community. But a problem remained: He was a wizard, but wizards cannot legally own wands until they've completed at least 5 years of schooling-"
"FIVE YEARS!?" came a cry from half the Hufflepuff common room, all of whom were listening with rapt attention.
Ivy blinked owlishly, "…Yes, after you sit owls, so long as you pass with at least an acceptable in all subjects, you can then request to sit for your Newts. Obviously most people don't do that, but there have been several cases where people sat Newts early… ANYWAYS; As I was saying- Ahem, So, He had to go to school. The problem was that no one would take him, he was 84, well past school age, and no one was particularly comfortable with him sharing dorms with children.
There was only one acceptation, Upon hearing about the story, Armando Dippet traveled clear over to meet De Flon in Rue de La Tour, in Paris. And they came to an agreement, that De Flon would bring himself, and his wife, and come to Hogwarts, where they would be given their own private apartment to stay in.
There he would attend class with the students, and he and his wife would even be allowed to share meals in the great hall if they so choose. De Flon attended his first year in 1894, at the age of 85, and was sorted into Ravenclaw house.
Though there were quite a few naysayers, especially about his Muggle wife being there, they students themselves quickly took a great liking to De Flon, giving him his nickname of "Old Seed", because of his advanced age despite being only a first year. They even took a shine to his wife, Marie-Amélie, who often spent time out by the lake reading, or sewing, or up in the safer greenhouses helping tend to the plants.
Vieux Graine turned down both the position of prefect, and later even Headboy, as he believed taking them would be unfair to the younger students, Despite that Vieux Graine does have several awards in the achievements hall, and there's a portrait of him and his wife on the fifth floor corridor, in the west wing, just before the spiral staircase that leads up into Ravenclaw Tower, that marks where their apartment used to be."
"In his Muggle lifetime, Vieux Graine was an author of adult focused novels, who never really achieved any success. After his exposure to the magical world, and more importantly, several years around young teenagers, Viex Graine changed up his whole writing style, (as well as his pen name.) from very dark, serious dramas, to lighthearted, whimsical fantasies aimed at a younger audience. And today he's one of the best known, beloved authors among Muggles or Magicals alike in my country. Though obviously as far as the Muggles know the Vieux Graine writing books now is the original's successor." Ivy ended.

Hello!! I've read all your hp works and I wanted to say that I love them all and they've made me feel feelings. The way you write drarry and just hp in general is very close to my heart.
That being said, there is a question I wanted to ask you as a writer. What does plagiarism mean and what does it constitute? Like... I hear that term a lot but just reading a definition is not making it clear to me. As far as I understand, copying someone's work, word by word is plagiarism. Does it also count as one if I copy someone's idea but just modify it a bit. Carry on is such a work and it's resemblance to hp and main pairs similarity to drarry are well known. Even hp itself has a evident similarity to Neil Gaiman's ‘The books of magic’ , at least as far as the titular character goes. It was also said that maybe jk stole the idea from there but Neil later said that it wasn't the case. So I'm guessing that's not plagiarism.
Let's take another example, I love you fic away childish things .. so if I wrote a fic with the same idea.. is that plagiarism? Or if I copy the plot? What if I liked a particular scene very much.. or a sentence very much and I used it as a base for a new fic.. or used that scene/sentence itself but in a different context is that plagiarism? I'm sure a lot of people have read Running On Air by eleventy7 in the drarry fandom. So if I use the sentence “Going away is easy, coming home is hard.” in a fic I write (maybe in another fandom or the same) does that count as plagiarism? Ofc I'm assuming that other people will know which scene or sentence I'm using on account of said fic being a famous work (in this case, fandom). But there could be a case where the source is not well known. What if I took something from a particular folktale of a community or country? Would that count as plagiarism? Jk Rowling herself has said that she used a lot of info while writing hp from various stories, folktales, religious books, lore and some good old tropes of said genre and pure imagination. Most of it was done unconsciously while writing. I guess it doesn't count as plagiarism if the place where you're copying from doesn't have a particular author (for eg folktales etc). Like.. God is not gonna sue me if I wrote things similar to some religious text. His followers on the other hand... yeah best not go there haha. But yeah.. what if I used different things from various sources, like.. just picking my way across it all and using them to write a story, just mish mashing things together like a collage and making something out of it. Will that be plagiarism? Or is that just being inspired by other art? On the other hand there is a saying that every art has a genesis and nothing is original. Every work is inspired by some other work be it art, music, writing or whatever. So where does one draw a line between inspiration and plagiarism?
I know it's a very long ask and I'm using a lot of scenarios but I wanted to cover everything that might come under the word 'Plagiarism'. What are your thoughts on it? What is included in plagiarism? Specifically, in writing.
If you made it this far thank you for reading where i essentially just ramble lol. I would like to know your answer and if you have any reading material on it please point me towards them. Thank you and I hope you're doing well xoxo
Plagiarism is copying word for word. It's one kind of stealing.
Copyright infringement is also a kind of stealing. That's a legal term about copyrighted material, but laws from some countries around this issue can maybe help clarify what is socially considered stealing and what is considered fair use. "Fair use" is also a legal term (at least, in the US); it refers to reasons you can use a copyrighted work without permission. I think that what many people socially consider "not stealing," even though its using someone else's ideas, falls under fair use.
Fanfic generally falls under fair use. The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW)--which is the organization behind AO3--argues that while fanfic uses things like characters and settings from copyrighted work, fic falls under fair use because it is creative and transformative.
The transformative part is important. If you copied Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone word for word and put it on AO3, that would be plagiarism. It's not transformed in any way. But if you write a story in which Harry and Draco fall in love, you're significantly transforming the story in a way that progresses the world of literature.
Other attributes of fair use (beyond whether the work is transformative) include whether the work is done for profit, whether the market for the original copyrighted work will be impacted negatively by the derivative work, and how substantially the derivative work uses the original copyrighted work. Fanfic uses the original copyrighted work quite substantially in many cases, but if it doesn't impact the market for the original copyrighted work and isn't done for profit, that shouldn't disqualify it from fair use. This is why it's extremely important never to ask for money for a fanfic, and why any author doing that should be reported to the hosting site.
Now, you asked about the Harry Potter series. While JKR may have gotten ideas about kids attending magical schools from other books, HP differs significantly enough that whenever she was sued for copyright infringement, she won her cases. Some might call JKR's books a ripoff of other books like it, but most agree that while not terribly original, these books do not count as stealing. (I would add, though, that just because someone wins a case doesn't mean it's not stealing. Disney steal shit all the time but wins cases because they own everything.)
You also asked about Carry On. I would say about that series, too, that it is substantially different enough from other books, that it doesn't count as stealing. There are just lots of books about kids secretly going to magic school, as it turns out. But I would add that even if there were more similarities to HP than there are in Carry On, Carry On could not be considered theft, because it is transformative.
Carry On, like Lev Grossman's The Magicians, is in a conversation with books like Harry Potter, books about magical schools and books with young, Chosen One protagonists. Carry On is not a fanfic; the characters are not the same; the set-up is not the same; the plot is not the same. But it is a book that asks questions about Harry Potter, and other books like Harry Potter. It's asking, what does it mean to be the Chosen One? Isn't there something sinister about a supportive mentor figure who pushes young people into war? Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games is also in a conversation with books that have young Chosen Ones, and it asks the same questions. Carry On further asks, isn't there a strange chemistry between the archetypal Golden Boy protagonist and the archetypal schoolmate antagonist? That's something tons of high school romance stories ask, and tons of HP fics, but it wasn't something that hadn't yet been done in a magical school Chosen One series--not with homosexuality--which also makes it pretty damn transformative.
You asked about using a line from Running on Air in a different work. This is plagiarism, because it's the exact words. Using that sentence in any work would be plagiarism. Using the exact sentence that someone else wrote, not matter how well known the work, is plagiarism. You likely won't be sued, but it's still stealing in most cases.
Now, it could be acceptable to use a phrase from the sentence to reference Running on Air. You'll see this in a lot of older literature. You'll see a little phrase in quotes that isn't credited, but your Penguin footnote will tell you they were referencing another author there. That was common because everyone was expected to have read the same body of work in certain cultures.
In fandom, lots of people will have read the same fics, so it could be a nod to another author to quote their work in a fic of your own. That's generally not the culture, mostly because the reason authors would do that had more to do with literary ideas that story telling, and most fic has a focus on storytelling. And, because fandom is a non-professional community where it's easy to reach out directly to the authors, if you do want to quote something by a different author, the author should be asked--again, because that's the culture.
Some material is so often quoted that it's idiomatic. If you say "I put away childish things" in a work, that may be from the Bible, but most people know where it's from, and even if they don't, it's part of our language now. Same would be true if I put in a work "Parting is such sweet sorrow," which is from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Few would call it stealing if I didn't credit such sentences, but if you're not sure whether it's idiomatic, a place where you're using the exact words should be credited with a footnote or citation.
You asked about using a line from a folk tale. As you say, folk tales often don't have known authors--but more importantly for your question, they usually don't have definitive versions. There are literally thousands of versions of Cinderella. If you used an exact sentence the Brothers Grimm used in their version of Cinderella, that would be plagiarism. Any exact language from an extant version of the story would be the same way.
A lot of what I'm saying is about how law works (particularly in the US), which deals with what might be socially acceptable in terms of whether something is stealing or not. But many cultures do have oral traditions that have a specific way a story is told. I would argue that's still a specific version, and if you're quoting the exact language, it's still stealing. But lots and lots of cultures have stories they like to tell but always tell it a little different, in which case you might be stealing ideas but not plagiarizing. And some things that are said enough, such as "Once upon a time" and "And they lived happily ever after" are idiomatic and not consider plagiarism.
But idioms touch on an interesting topic related to idea theft, which is how likely it is that you came up with something on your own, or that anyone could without the original text. The line you quoted from Running on Air is unique, but the idea that coming home is hard is commonly accepted. Indeed, there is an idiom that states "You can't go home again," which refers to the difficulty of coming home again.
Therefore, if someone said, "Going home is difficult," it might be a paraphrase of the sentence from Running on Air, but it might also be a paraphrase of the idiom, and it would be a little silly to call that plagiarism. Paraphrasing can be plagiarism, but it depends on a) how closely the paraphrase hews to the original, b) how much is paraphrased (as soon as you're paraphrasing more than a line, it really starts to be plagiarism), and c) whether someone could reasonably come up with it themselves.
So, if someone said, "Leaving home isn't difficult, but going home again is," that paraphrase is a lot more directly related to the original sentence and could be considered plagiarism. However, in a story without any other Running on Air references or similarities, I would assume an author came up with that based on the idiom and would never even dream of accusing them of plagiarism. But if the next two sentences were also similar to lines from Running on Air, I'd get suspicious.
In fact, the original line you quoted is close enough to the idiom that if I read it in a different story, I might assume that the author hadn't remembered that that line was from Running on Air. This has definitely happened to me--I used a line or phrase that I thought was mine, but I actually got it from somewhere else. If you're doing it consciously, you shouldn't. With paraphrasing, I think it's a little dicier; some would say if you're consciously paraphrasing anything it's a problem, but if you know you read that line from Running on Air but also know you've thought about that idiom about coming home a lot, it might be fine to say something sort of similar, as long as it's not the same and as long as you're not taking other things.
The same is true with ideas. You asked about Away Childish Things. If you read that fic and decided to write a fic about Harry de-aging, you might have been inspired by me, but it isn't stealing because de-aging is a common trope in fandom. You could've come up with it yourself or by reading any number of things. You asked about the plot; if you wrote a story in which Harry and Draco got to know each other by identifying illegal potions and then while doing some of that work together, Harry got de-aged and later Draco got de-aged, I would still say that this is a plot you could have thought of yourself. If you wrote a story in which everyone was infected by a potion that was like Imperius, meaning Harry only trusted Draco to help him, and Harry de-aged, and then to cure him Harry re-aged and then Draco de-aged, and could only re-age one year at a time, dealing with all of their Hogwarts years again and revealing Draco's history with his mentally ill mother and Muggle dating, I would say...okay, that's hewing pretty closely to Away Childish Things and feels a bit like you took something from me.
If you called a shop in your fic Tailored Tinctures, that's very specific, and I would say you took something from me. If you had an indicator solution in which you had to dip your thumb and your thumb turned cerulean to indicate a positive, I would say you took something from me. For these kinds of questions, it has to do with the amount you took but also the specificity of it.
As I mentioned, fandom has its own culture. Usually if you get an idea from someone else it's a very good idea to drop that author a line and say, "Hey, I got inspired, do you mind if I do?" But I don't do that when there are a hundred fics that all have the same idea, because by then it's starting to be fanon, and using fanon is not considered in this culture to be stealing.
Different people have different ideas about this, but I do feel that I'm pretty close to the general thought on this. Some people will say that any time you are inspired by anything you must credit, or you must ask, or you must never use it to begin with. But most of us are inspired by things all the time, and the only times we claim we aren't are the times when we really can't remember what the original inspiration was, or when things are so jumbled that ten different things inspired one idea. In those cases it isn't true that we aren't using other works, only that we can't identify them.

So AO3 recently emailed me that they've ag-glom-merated another fanfic site in their progressing global domination, and have traced a few of the fics there back to me and do I wanna claim them, expunge them, disavow them...?
Man they're HP James/Lily reskins of scenes from my fav books. In the years since it's become apparent that I totally squandered the opportunity of underdeveloped literary analysis skills, and didn't write ANYthing queer or unhinged or that I later showed a psych in support of a diagnosis.
Anyway I'm planning a monsterfucker retelling of the Lindwyrm folktale.

Analysis of Supernatural Horror Film
“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown” (Lovecraft, HP, 1927). Beyond the boundaries of reality is a realm that everyone consciously fears and has feared for centuries. These thoughts and the fear it creates is what produces the most bone-chilling horror movies of our day. The possibility that other realities may exist and involve unknown entities and monsters, have been a part of human culture since the beginning of time, and lead us to question, “could this be my reality?”.
The lore of the unknown lies deep within the values of one’s culture and it is that unknown that has created our folktales, legends, and myths, and most importantly, our religion. Religion Is one of the most controversial, imposing, and influencing factors that affect human history and culture; Religion affects how we see the world. With every sort of religion, comes a side of both good and evil, and it is that evil which awakens our darkest fears. Those fears are the architecture that supernatural writers and directors of the supernatural genre create.
The supernatural genre involves themes of unreal entities and other extraordinary beings such as witches, ghosts and demons. Supernatural activities, such as exorcisms, transcend the laws of nature. Often these films are likely set in remote places such as forests, rural areas and haunted locations.
Renowned film Director, Ari Aster, gained notoriety for his film “Hereditary” in 2018. “Midsommar” directed in 2019, are among his best works. James Wan, Director of “Saw”, “Insidious”, and more recently, “The Conjuring”, directed in 2012, are three classic supernatural films well known to the American public.
This genre is one of the oldest and most popular sub-genres of all the horror genres. Many centuries past Ancient Greek and Roman horror filled spoken tales, through the Western cultures of the 18th century which initially introduced animation to cinema, lie the more contemporary Supernatural films that flaunt stories with endless possibilities, unbound to the realities of this world.
The history of supernatural horror films continues to evolve in the present day and can further be subdivided into two lesser genres: The “Supernatural” and the “Devil and Demon” genre. While the initial subcategory, “Supernatural” depicts “unseen evil out to destroy the human race”, the “devil and demon” subcategory, typically has a main figure challenging an external evil force. For either subgenre, evil may take the shape of mythical, supernatural or religious representations.
Of all the genres of Horror, whether it be demonic possession, paranormal, monster, slasher, zombie or gore, the supernatural genre continues to be a satisfying outlet for the individual seeking to be thrilled with a ghost story, an afterlife theme or a challenge to avenge. Psychologist, Dr. Clasen (2018), purported that horror films can be therapeutic when the negative emotions caused by the film are controlled, Dr. Mel Ashford, and others have found that the effects of viewing horror shows by anxiety-ridden individuals perplexed with the current realities of life, may find it to be a safe outlet and a break from the real world complexities.
Research shows that individuals who are drawn to horror films, and in particular, psychological horror films, tend to be “high sensation seeking individuals” and open to new experiences, as opposed to their counterparts who are low sensation seeking. These individuals tend to be less adventurous types and tend to find horror distasteful. For those considered to possess “intuitive Energy” and a “Thinking Nature”, it is not surprising that the Supernatural Genre of Horror continues to play an important role in the history of horror.
Recent Supernatural films of the last few decades such as “Vampire Academy” (2014) and “The Sixth Sense” (1999) also can have positive emotional effects on the viewer who may enjoy the creativity of these films which depict supernatural themes, but lack the shocking effects that other horror films of the same genre depict.

Blake
Spirit Arcanist / Mental DMG
An arcanist's work exhibited in the 1700s. Completed in autumn, on August 17. First exhibition location unknown, but it was rumoured the exhibit has been displayed all over Japan before it later went all over the world.
When the sun is out, he loves to play around. But when the sun falls, he lurks deepest trenches of waters.
• Medium: Staring Contest
• Inspired by: Ancient Folktales [Spirit] A creature from the waters.
• Fragrance: Rain, Wet grass, Moonflower
Fun facts:
He's based off Toothless, a friendly fictional dragon in How to train your dragon.
He's a sea creature with a long, scaly tail on his torso, webbed hands to swim faster, and soul staring eyes that don't blink.
- He's often hangs out around a seafood restaurant near the beach. If you became a regular at that restaurant, you would just see him staring at the waiters and guests, he's not doing anything. Just staring. The staff calls him Blake, it's just a random name.
But, if you somehow managed to pissed him off or be rude to the staff, he would not hesitate to splash you with his tail. However, if you managed to be on his good side, he would sometimes bring some sea shells or pretty rocks as a gift. You can witness this behaviour towards the staff.
Role: Healer/Follow-up Attack
Pretty gifts.. "(Soft Grumble)." Mass Healing: Restores HP equal to 85% of the caster's attack to all allies by going underwater and finding sea shells and giving them as a gift.
Rude Guests! - "(Angry Grumble)" Mass Attack: Deals mental DMG by splashing them with his tail. If it's a critical hit and/or the enemy is in [Stats Down] or [Neg Status], does a follow-up attack that deals more mental DMG by jumping out of the water and slapping them with his tail.
Underwater Shock - "(Angry Huff)." Ultimate/1-Target Attack: Deals critical mental DMG to an enemy by dragging them underwater and drowning them.
A/N: Hello everyone! This is my first post so I'm still pretty new to this, please tell me if there's any mistakes in my grammar cuz English isn't my first language.

"Due to their new poison typing the fiber of Toxiram is no longer safe to burn indoors, but is popular for repelling bugs and other pests from gardens and small outdoor gatherings. In fall this pokemon gives off a pungent scent to attract mates."
Gardiron
The Champion Pokemon
Fighting/Steel

Trailinx is it's mortal enemy and this pokemon will never back down from it or any other threats to those it loves."

Never really thought about it before, but there is a distinct lack of Krampus in Harry Potter.

Mpaca
Tumblr media
Image © @chimeride, accessed at their blog here
[Mpaca is a forest spirit in the lore of the Nyange, a people in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo who have a rich and mostly still extant oral tradition. The Epic of Mwindo is the most famous of their sagas in English, and Mpaca appears in that story in passing, as a point of reference and comparison. The folktale in which he plays a starring role is collected in The Dictionary of African Mythology, and is online for free . Something I think is interesting is how closely the story “Mpaca’s Very Long Fingernail” maps to the davalpa/himantopus. It is a greedy, parasitic creature that rides on its victims’ backs, and can be defeated by getting it drunk. I’ve talked before about how I don’t hold a lot of stock in diffusionism, but part of me does wonder if the voyages of Sinbad made it to east/central Africa, or Nyange epics made it to the Middle East. There was a lot of trade between the regions, after all.]
Mpaca CR 4 CE Monstrous Humanoid This little man has long, wild hair and long fingers. The middle finger on each hand is extremely long compared to the others, ending in a single claw. His face is elongated, ending in a mole-like snout.
An mpaca is a twisted little humanoid that delights in enslaving other creatures. They can control the behavior of humanoids by jabbing them with their long middle finger, and then ride atop them. They do not treat their slaves well, forcing them to do exhausting work on long hours, and restricting their food and water. An mpaca may even ride such slaves into combat as a mount. Such slaves are controlled repeatedly and often worked to death if the mpaca can manage it.
In seeking out new slaves, an mpaca can shapechange, often favoring the shape of young women and girls. They can also extend their magical fingers to extreme distances, spying on their charges from afar though the nail. If their fingers are severed, the mpaca cannot use its charming ability, and so almost always only extends the finger on one hand and keeps the other in reserve.
Most mpacas live as parasites of humanity, taking over small villages to use as their personal dens of iniquity. The mpaca keeps the community in line with threats and magical charm, alternating between hosts while draining the wealth and happiness from everyone who lives there. When not finding victims, mpacas are lazy and slovenly. They are prone to indulging in drugs and drink, and victims of an mpaca have been known to dislodge the creature by getting it intoxicated.

A creature so struck must succeed a DC 14 Will save or be charmed for 24 hours. A creature that resists is immune to the charm claw of that mpaca for the next 24 hours. Feats An mpaca’s Undersized Mount feat allows it to ride Medium bipeds without penalty. Probing Finger (Su) An mpaca can extend its middle fingers and see through them. A finger extended in this way can stretch out to 600 feet long, extending or retracting as much as 30 feet a round. The mpaca can see and hear through the finger, and make charm claw attacks with it. While using its finger in this fashion, the finger can make Stealth checks as if it were a Diminutive creature, and fit through cracks as narrow as 1 inch. The mpaca can still use its normal senses while extending a finger in such fashion, but it is distracted; treat the mpaca as being flat footed. The finger can be destroyed through damage (AC 18, 5 hp, DR 5/bludgeoning or slashing). An mpaca regrows a destroyed finger over the course of 1 month, and if both of its fingers are destroyed, it cannot make charm claw attacks.

Theodore Nott was dead. At least that was the official ministry declaration. The Nott manor had been found burnt to the ground three months after the fall of Voldemort. The Aurors in charge of the investigation had determined it to be a result of Fiendfyre. Deliberately cast. There was barely anything left, the magic having consumed almost everything. It was assumed it had also consumed Theodore Nott, Draco Malfoy, Blaise Zabini and Pansy Parkinson who had been missing ever since.
Which is why Harry was so confused that the man who had been considered dead for more than three years was sitting right in front of him.
******
This story is a Harry Potter retelling of the old German folktale "The Three Ravens". The poem at the start of the story is a direct quote from the Jim Henson series the storyteller. All rights to that belong to Jim Henson Productions.
All rights to Harry Potter belong to J.K. Rowling but I do not support her views or opinions.

Drifloon the balloon pokemon a ghost and flying type
1ft 4inc
2.6lbs
Ability: Aftermath or Unburden Hidden Ability: Flare Boost
Egg Group: Amorphous
Highest Base Stat: Hp:90
Lowest Base Stat: Defense:34
Base Stat Total: 348
It is whispered that any child who mistakes Drifloon for a balloon and holds on to it could wind up missing. Because of the way it floats aimlessly, an old folktale calls it a “signpost for wandering spirits.”
Tumblr media
At level 28 it evolves into Drifblim the Blimp pokemon a ghost and flying
3ft 11inc
33.1lbs
Ability: Aftermath or Unburden Hidden Ability: Flare Boost
Highest Base Stat: Hp:150
Lowest Base Stat: Defense:44
Base Stat Total: 498
It can generate and release gas within its body. That’s how it can control the altitude of its drift. They carry people and pokemon, but the wind can catch them, so there can't be a fixed destination.

Liv ✨Moon, folktale, fur for the 🗻 asks?
I love your picks, Tee!
moon: what is your astrological sign?
I’m a Sagittarius! December baby ♐️
folktale: what stories remind you of your childhood?
Quite a few, actually! I was an avid book reader when I was a kid. Besides HP, my favorite books were Peter Pan, Pollyanna, any books about mermaids, witches and Greek mythology lol plus this Brazilian collection of classic tales with breathtaking illustrations (1991):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Each book came with a cassette tape (my first podcast experience 😂) and I was absolutely obsessed with them, I’ll probably tear up if I ever listen to the opening song again. Best years of my life!

I am so sorry
But also no I’m not
1 for all because I am an evil bastard
Then more specifically
4, 12, 18, 24, 25, 35, 40, 42, 44, 45, 56, 63, 69 for Lady, Harmony, Nomiki, Odonys, Ione and Somnia
6, 44 and 58 for Nik and Valerie
20, 40, 42, 56, 65 for Icarus as well
💞💞💞
under a read more because i cannot shut up about my characters and i won't apologize for that!
most of these will b organized by character instead of by question but since you asked for 1 for all of em i'll put them all underneath it
1. why did they choose their class(es)? their subclass(es)?
Nik: they found a weird book in a thrift shop and accidentally figured out how to poke Ink-Treader to get certain automatic responses in the form of magic powers, which they swear are totally normal and not the result of a pact (conscious or not) at all.
Nomiki: her mother was a fighter who trained her well, and when she was a bit older she swore vengeance against that which destroyed her world, which she initially thought was the gods but then turned out to be The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar (Eldritch Edition)
Harmony: was always an outdoors-y sort of girl, so druid made sense when she was transported into The School, and then the Dictionfairy of the Summer Reading Court took a special interest in her and gave her some extra stuff on top of druidic powers!
Lady: built to be a… let’s call her a “personal companion,” whose main gimmick was that she is extremely intelligent about a great many things with a perfect memory; hence Archivist. as for the Artificer class itself, that came about primarily when she was working with an inventor/engineer named Rowan Keen, who enlisted her as his assistant in his projects. she learned a great deal about mechanical engineering and building from him, as well as receiving some upgrades like sewing/welding tools in her hands to assist her with this.
Somnia: she is very old (like, 650ish years old) and very in tune with nature already, and then the goddess of sleep saved her life with a drop of her blood, giving her the Stars circle powers
Odonys: they were formerly a Watcher Oath paladin, and took up that mantle because it's what their society set out for them. they made the choice to break away from it when offered freedom by the primal embodiment of chaos, though they have mixed feelings on this because it caused them to be exiled
Ione: she didn't have a choice 😔 nearly drowning unlocked some latent sorcerer powers
Valerie: stunt fighting training baybeeeeee
Icarus: also didn't have a choice, on account of nearly burning himself to death and then taking a deal from the god of fire to work for him in exchange for not dying
Lady

56. what animal do they most relate to?
caged bird that recently busted out :>
63. what fight has scared them the most?
before she got free will, we encountered some Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (In Space) that knocked her down to single-digit HP. though she wasn't physically able to feel fear at the time, the significant damage was deeply alarming.
69.how would they describe their party members?
Domino: "My dear friend, and a very kind and intelligent woman. I was very concerned for her when I was still under restrictions. Now I am no longer restrained in what I can think or do, but I find that I am still worried about her. She is always so melancholy when she thinks no one is looking..."
Rusty: "Something of an enigma. I only recently learned his real name: Rheneas Dolgoch. Apparently he used to be involved in various criminal activities before being framed for the disappearance of his boyfriend and then taking this portalhopping job for Dr. Horizon. I'd like to get to know him better, and have him teach me some things."
Clifton: "An honest man, with a good heart, and somewhat lacking the brains to think through his actions. Still, he tries, and he is responsible for getting Kinmati's attention with regards to my previous plight. I do wonder if adventuring across the multiverse is the best coping mechanism for the loss of his fiancée, but..."

not as much as prose, but she likes a good poem or two! especially free verse stuff
42. what are three words they would use to describe themself?

Odonys
4. if they could learn one spell that isn’t available to them at present, which spell would it be?

Q'ix: "Annoying. Good with their fiddle, gifted with magic, but I don't trust them at all, and I don't know if it's worth keeping them around."
Sloane: "A creature that skinny has no business being anywhere close to the middle of the fight, and yet that's where he is constantly, like Breidr when he gets underfoot. Except Breidr has more bulk. Still, he seems to know what he's doing with that sword."
Suvi: "I wonder if there's even anything underneath all the layers of falsehoods and misdirection she wears. But she has been helpful, and having a cart has come in handy."
Amber: "A woman of few words and strong convictions. I appreciate her presence."
Somnia
4. if they could learn one spell that isn’t available to them at present, which spell would it be?
Catnap, so she can cast it on Nemo and Gimmy!
12. have they ever been in love?
Somnia loves her children very much, and loves life, but in terms of romantic love specifically, no. as for the person she used to be before she died and was resurrected? ... also no.
18. do they see themself as a leader or a follower?
a follower, mostly. she's old, and she's done enough leading that she's happy to let her kids take the lead.
24. which of the four elements speaks to them the most?
🌎 (earth) on account of druid stuff as well as dependability
25. what stories do they like to tell? what stories do they like to hear?
somnia likes to tell the stories of the constellations on whatever world she finds herself on! she has an innate ability to know them and know what they mean
she likes to hear whatever sorts of stories are being told, she's really not picky; it's more important that the story is important to whoever is telling it
35. which party member do they worry for?
Nemo, constantly. they are so young and they've been through so much that she can't help but worry. Gimmy is at least an adult, though he still needs a bit of fussing over.
40. do they enjoy poetry?
i don't think she actively seeks it out, but she won't say no to listening to or reading some if the opportunity presents itself
42. what are three words they would use to describe themself?
motherly, empathetic, old
44. what do they need to learn?
she needs to learn that not everyone can be saved, or is worth saving, i think
45. how do they hug people?
with that good deep pressure therapy and mom bod
56. what animal do they most relate to?
tortoise, probably. old and slow and wise.
63. what fight has scared them the most?
the fight with the Found Footage when she was knocked out and wasn't sure whether Nemo and Gimmy would be okay without her. though tbh this upcoming fight with the Imago is more than likely going to take the scariest fight spot, at least until we finally face the Broken Lurker.
69.how would they describe their party members?
Nemo: "Oh, my poor little Orion... they're a good child, they really are. But they were surrounded by people who didn't know or care to realize that, and they've thought themself a nobody for so long that it hurts my heart. I wish they could see how many people they've helped just by being themself."
Gimmy: "Gimmy is very dear to me. He pretends like he doesn't care, but I know that he does. I can see it when he works on his little dragon construct, and when we were speaking to Minerva about Nemo's past. He just needs a little bit of help understanding how to be polite and kind to others, that's all."
Nik
6. which party member do they relate to the most?
tbh probably svetlana. they're both big smarties who have Simic roots! they're basically identical!
44. what do they need to learn?
how to care about other people beyond just "what can this person do for me?"
58. what do they think their role in the party is? what is their role in actuality?
they think they're the brains of this operation and the sole voice of reason, but really they're a bit of dead weight because i didn't build them very well
Valerie
6. which party member do they relate to the most?
tough to say because we've only had a couple of sessions of the campaign she's in, but right now probably Ashlyn. just two mean girls against the world!
44. what do they need to learn?
it's actually not a bad thing to be girly or to embrace femininity, it's not a weakness like she thinks she is but can be neutral or even a major strength
58. what do they think their role in the party is? what is their role in actuality?
she thinks she's the only competent member of the party and the fearless leader; she is an asset in fights for sure, especially once she gets some maneuvers, but in reality she is only one piece of the puzzle
Icarus
20. which of the five senses do they rely the most on?
hearing! icarus has always had impeccable hearing and has relied on it a lot when sneaking around
40. do they enjoy poetry?
he does not talk about the angsty teenage poems he wrote when he was younger and didn't realize he was trans. but i think if he applied himself he could be a good poet, and he likes to read and listen to it.
42. what are three words they would use to describe themself?
selfish, failure, coward
56. what animal do they most relate to?
prior to almost burning to death, he would have said a swan. post-burning... an ugly duck
65. what is holding them back?
what isn't holding him back tbh. he has a lot of issues stemming from being raised to think he was perfect and then tossed aside as soon as he stepped out of line. i think the number one thing though is the image he has of himself as a bad person who does bad things. he used to be a bad and selfish person who has hurt a lot of people; after his near-death experience he became really humble and considerate, but still thinks of himself in terms of his past actions, instead of what he is doing now to redeem himself. what is holding him back is his inability to recognize that he's changed.

☕️bipedal vs quadrupedal werewolves
awesome question!! I know people usually just turn into normal wolves in old folktales about werewolves but I’ve always found that kinda boring so I need my werewolves to be properly strange and monstrous. I love a classic bipedal werewolf like in the 1941 and 2010 wolfman films, but only if it’s done with fun practical effects (i.e. it’s literally just a dude covered in hair). otherwise I’m all about big scary strange wolf creatures, like in an american werewolf in london (1981) or in the ginger snaps trilogy (2000-2004). those are also done with practical effects instead of cgi and they’re way more compelling for it, but I will accept cgi werewolves if they’re still weird big quadrupedal boys (like in hp and the prisoner of azkaban).
send me a ☕️ + a topic and i’ll talk about how i feel about it
