My Dad's new HP printer does this. He worked repairing medical equipment so he's long had a soft spot for HP but I think with this printer the shine has gone off and he might never buy another HP product again.
Unauthorized water
Itâs not clear when General Electric started boobytraping appliances with DRM. I first encountered it in January when Shane Morris tweeted about his fridge refusing to accept the $19 generic filter he replaced the GE $55 filter with.
https://twitter.com/IamShaneMorris/status/1220367934947758080
The fridges use an RFID detector to distinguish original GE filters from generic replacements, and engage in lots of anti-owner trickery, like memorizing the IDs of previously used filters and refusing to accept them.
https://bbs.boingboing.net/t/unauthorized-charcoal-ge-fridges-wont-dispense-ice-or-water-unless-your-filter-authenticates-as-an-official-55-component/159552/41
Morris isnât the only one ourtaged that his fridge is plotting against him. One (anonymous) owner was so offended that they created a site dedicated to warning off potential buyers and explaining to other suckers how to bypass GEâs lockouts.
https://gefiltergate.com/
Thereâs a good reason for the anonymity. Under Sec 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, showing how to bypass an âaccess controlâ to a copyrighted work (eg RFID-detecting code in the fridge) is a potential felony, carrying a 5-year prison sentence and a $500k fine.
This is quite the moral hazard. Manufacturers have learned that if they design their products so that any use that hurts their shareholders (like buying third party parts) requires bypassing DRM, it becomes a felony to use your own property to your own advantage.
Which is why weâve seen DRM creep into all manner of devices, from insulin pumps to tractors to car engines to Iphone screens. âFelony contempt of business modelâ is the statute that every monopolist has dreamt of, and with DMCA 1201, they have it in their grasp.
Back in 2011, I wrote a short story about this for MIT Tech Reviewâs first sf anthology, called âThe Brave Little Toasterâ (in tribute to Tom Disch).
https://craphound.com/news/2011/09/28/the-brave-little-toaster-from-trsf/
The issue only got worse, and so last year I published âUnauthorized Breadâ as part of my collection âRadicalizedâ (itâs being turned into a TV show by Topic):
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/01/unauthorized-bread-a-near-future-tale-of-refugees-and-sinister-iot-appliances/
The metastasis of DRM into every product category shows that when business apologists talk about the sanctity of property, they mean the sanctity of CORPORATE property.
If the manufacturer gets to override your decisions about the things you buy - and felonize any attempt to wrest control back - they property ceases to exist. We become tenants of our devices, not owners.
Itâs digital feudalism, in which an elite owns all the property and we get to use it in ways they proscribe. The difference is that today, our aristocracy isnât even human.
Itâs the immortal, remorseless colony organism called the Limited Liability Corporation, to which we are mere inconvenient gut flora.

<strong>Hewlett Packard (HP)</strong>
New Post has been published on https://bankakredin.com/what-is-hewlett-packard-hp-who-is-the-hp-founder/
Hewlett Packard (HP)
What is Hewlett Packard (HP)? Who is the HP Founder?
Hewlett Packard (HP)
Hewlett-Packard  (abbreviated HP) is a multinational  information technology  (IT in Turkish or IT in English)  company that sells hardware, software and other technology services .Â
Headquartered in Palo Alto, California , the HP brand was founded in 1939 by Stanford University alumni  Bill Hewlett and  David Packard . It was a garage venture when it was first established. HP is also known as the symbolic founder of Silicon  Valley . Located at 367 Addison Avenue , the garage is also known as the birthplace of Silicon Valley. The Hewlett-Packard  brand sells the products and product groups listed below.
computing devices,
Enterprise and industrial level servers,
network products,
storage devices,
software,
consumables,
Printers and scanners and other display products.
In October 2014, for enterprise products and services , Hewlett-Packard Enterprise , personal computer and printer  HP Inc. Separate entities were established under the brand names. The HP brand has become popular among users with laptops,  LaserJet and  InkJet technology printers. While Hewlett-Packard was the worldâs leading computer manufacturer from 2007 to the first quarter of 2013,  Lenovo brand took over this seat.
History
The first financially successful project was an audio oscillator called  the HP 200A . Unlike its competitors, it attracted attention and became popular with half the price.
One of HPâs first customers was sound engineer  Bud Hawkins, working for Walt Disney Studios , and he purchased 8  HP 200B audio oscillators for WDâs animated movie  Fantasia .
The sales of the brand reached the level of 5.5 million dollars in 1951 with 215 personnel  .
In the 1960s, partnerships were established with Japan-based  Sony and  Yokogawa Electric to produce high-quality devices. Due to the cost of the devices produced as a result of these partnerships, a great financial success could not be achieved.
In 1963, HP and Yokogawa entered into a joint venture, Yokogawa-Hewlett-Packard, to market HP brand products in Japan .

Keep Your Head Up to the Sky (As Your Day Unfolds) by alphera [Twitter]
Illustrated by Shirou_UOHS @shirou-oh-sakura
Fandom: ĺ
¨čéŤć | The King's Avatar
Rating: General Audiences
Category: M/M
Words: 9 270
Time is rarely kind, and impossible to escape. At the ripe old age of 30, Han Wenqing retires from the Glory Professional Alliance and moves forward the only way he knows how: fearlessly and without hesitation.
About the Book
FONTS: Coelacanth, Segoe UI Emoji
IMAGES: Illustrations by Shirou; pastel sky ID: 7007221 from Rawpixel; dark blue sky ID: 7044483 from Rawpixel; Han Wenqing & Desert Dust image from The King's Avatar Wikia; Ye Xiu & Lord Grim image also from TKA Wikia; Glory card png also made by Shirou via Discord
MATERIALS: regular ol' printer paper (8.5"x11", 20lb, 96 bright); ~1.5mm chipboard; Neenah cardstock (8.5"x11", 65lb, bright white); Iris bookcloth (Madeira colour); paper from Gilded Ink paper pad by Recollections; waxed linen thread (30/3 size, white); wheat paste (1:4 flour:water)
PROGRAMS USED: typeset in Affinity Publisher 2; endpapers designed with Affinity Designer 2 and Affinity Photo 2; imposed with Renegade's Community Imposer (settings: Quarto, snug against binding edge, signatures of 2 sheets).
Text & QR codes printed with colour laser printer (duplex, flip long edge), images printed with inkjet printer (HP Envy 5055; one sheet at a time, single sided, place facedown in tray)
BINDING: quarto (quarter-letter) size, sewn board binding with french link stitch and breakaway spine.
.
Absolutely LOVED this story! I've reread this one a number of times, and keep going back for more. Alphera's writing is so good! Ye Xiu is the series protagonist so things usually follow him, which makes it refreshing to see a story through Han Wenqing's eyes. And the author does it SO WELL! AHHH!
It's been a while since my first read-through, but I'm pretty sure this was the first TKA fic that I actually downloaded and started typesetting. Absolutely chuffed to have it finished! (Love me some growth-- the typeset looks a LOT better than my earlier attempts!)
RAMBLES
Another sewn board binding and breakaway spine! Since this isn't my first go at it, the construction of the book was considerably faster and smoother than my last one. It's just as well, because I ran into a speed bump that stretched out how long it took to typeset and print.
The culprit: (very pretty) illustrations. My laser's colour printing capabilities are shot to hell, so I used my inkjet for the artwork. This involved creating 3 copies of my typeset: 1) the completed typeset; 2) just the text, images hidden; 3) just the images, text hidden/white. Then I ran them through the imposer and printed the text version. The real issue was figuring out how to feed the sheets through my inkjet printer to print the images where I want them. Had to go one page at a time, single-sided. (Just need to place sheet facedown in the tray. So flip along vertical axis.) It took a while, but I got there in the end. And the results were SO worth it! đ
For the scene breaks I left them as written. I had tried inserting images of the Glory Logo and account card, or using crossed swords emojis âď¸, but nothing I tried worked as well as what the author did. (It's really neat! Different characters were used to indicate the direction of the timeskip: >>>> for a jump forward in time; <<<< for a flash into the past; and ==== for regular scene breaks, a 'next' rather than 'before' or 'later/after'.)
The cover and endpapers were based off of Shirou's fantastic cover illustration of HQW and YX walking hand-in-hand down a beach at sunset. The art itself is phenomenal so I had it stand alone as a frontispiece and didn't do anything fancy with the title page. For the covers, I looked through my decorative paper stash for something red or black to represent HWQ or Team Tyranny. What I found was paper with pinks, oranges, and purples similar to that illustration -- and that was that. I liked how the colours matched the art, and the gold splashed across it. (Gold for victory, gold for wedding rings and a happy golden future together.)
(Sidenote: I love how the beginning of the end of HWQ's career as an e-sports player "starts with a tingle in his ring finger", leading him and YX to taking the next steps in their relationship and eventually getting married đđ)
I went with a red bookcloth for the spine because it's a common team colour for Tyranny, Excellent Era, and Happy. It also represents good fortune, courage, passion, and love -- things that come to mind when I think about YX, HWQ, and HanYe. The particular shade of red I used is Madeira. It's darker than Ruby Red and leans a little cooler, which suits the decorative paper more.
The endpapers use two background images (overlayed, adjusted, using multiple blending modes) and some images of HWQ and YX from The King's Avatar Wikia.
The background images are from Rawpixel -- I was just minding my own business looking for images of clouds and maybe some mountains to represent overcoming challenges/glory/looking up to the sky, when I found some clouds with the same sunset colours of Shirou's art. Figured it was too perfect, and if I'm going to lean into that design-wise, I might as well go whole hog and full-ass it. Then I found a starry night sky to add some darker blues and stars to it to match. After that it was a matter of overlapping them and positioning them to fit. I also grabbed some images of HWQ and YX from the King's Avatar Wikia and added them to it because HanYe. (After removing the backgrounds).

hi! i just found your blog :) love your commonplace book scans! if you donât mind me asking, could you give a more in-depth explanation of what commonplacing is exactly and what your process is? iâm intrigued and considering getting into it but i wouldnât even know where to start! thanks a lot xx
Absolutely! So my commonplace is specifically all movies, qoutes, articles, tumblr/Instagram posts, book excerpts, etc. that either resonated with me or I think I'll want to reference later. That is the heart of what common placing is - saving things for later physically rather than digitally.
Some of these just pop up in my feed, and I'll hit the like or save button. If it's an article, it usually first pops up as a preview on my Instagram and I'll open the full article on my desktop than bookmark it in a specific folder for common placing.
Sometimes, when I want to actively find something out (say, about if perfume is really bad for the environment, or I want to look at author interviews because I just loved a book) I will go out and search for that information.
Then, usually once a week I compile everything I'd like to print - i print the sources bc my handwriting is messy - into a word document formatted for two columns. I try and hold off printing until i have a full page worth, or two full page worth.
For images, I have another word document (these are printed in color, and i usually have to jigsaw to fit as many images on the page as possible, so different word document). Same thing, I try and wait until I have a full page to print. Usually x2 a month. I sometimes will print with an HP sprocket but the quality is really bad and the pictures are thick so, it's for when I'm out of printer ink or I think a photo will look okay with a sorta...uneven look.
I use just a Staples brand journal, TruRed. Cheap and easy. I draw a line at the top so I can write the date, and in the future if I want to tag it with a colored sticker or something, I can. My layouts usually include divided space on either the left or right of a page. The article goes in the bigger open space, and then the source (always write your source!!) and any commentary goes in the smaller margins.
Commentary is usually why I wanted to print it, what it reminds me of or makes me think about, etc. What I think the argument was missing, etc. Can be as little or as much as you like. As emotional and deep or as plain-jane as you like. There are no rules!
I trim printed text and images with a 12 inch trimmer bc I've got wobbly hands, but some people just use a little (blanking on the name) exacto knife? Any 12 inch trimmer will do mine is expensive but I also scrapbook so I use it all the time.
I paste things in using a tape runner (again, because I scrapbook and found a tape runner and my mom sells scrapbook supplies they're very accessible to me). Some people use tape, washi tape, glue sticks (liquid glue I've never seen).
And yeah, then I just decorate and play around. It doesn't have to be pretty. It can be really pretty if you want - I'm motivated by aesthetics, so, I like mine to be a little pretty.
If you'd like to see how I actually put it together and why I print certain things, my YouTube channel is the place to go.
Some people tape in movie tickets, receipts from where they shopped or ate, pictures from daily life. Some people mix common-placing and journaling, so including diary entries about their day or about a topic they love, or their thoughts and feelings (I keep mine in a separate journal, explained in this video). Some people mix common-placing with bullet journal or planning. Some combine all three!
At the end I just use a printer scanner (HP Envy 5500, cheap) and post them online that way bc I love the look.
People who have other styles you might try and look at are @petite-gloom (an OG who inspired me and many others) @fakelavender , @teddybearsticker .

what scanner do you use? I have a two-in-one printer + scanner that I got for cheap, but I would really like to get something more suited for artwork
I have an HP ENVY 4520 series, its also a printer and scanner and it works well enough but its not the best for art tbh. it works best for clean black line art, u can really tell its best at scanning printed documents. pretty much all the art in my posts where a scanner was used is edited bc it would look kinda shit otherwise lol. like as an example here's one of my illustrations before and after editing
id also def like to know if anyone has recommendations for a scanner that's good for artwork lol
#its not really 'mine' i just use it the most out of my family lol#they bought it bc they needed a new printer and it happened to also be a scanner#the original scan always looks worse than the irl art and i have to edit it so it looks closer#an annoying thing also is the scanner really picks up the tiny white gaps caused by the papers texture and makes them super bright#bc its meant for scanning documents where its useful to pick up anything white so brightly

Hey there Miyabi! How do you get such high-res, beautiful, and professional scan quality? What's your process?
Thank you! I certainly don't think I do anything that professional, so glad you have been decieved into thinking that about them! LOL I started doing this scan of the day stuff just to bring better quality to a lot of the older contributions of mine floating around the web. Looking at them on here, the Megaman wikia and other places, they just felt small and dirty. Especially as basic technology had gotten better over the decade or so since I first scanned them. I have 2 different scanners, one of which is a fancier Epson that I bought specifically to scan film slides a year or so ago. Still use it for basic scans from time to time. But honestly, for the settei, I'm still just using my general home HP Envy printer/scanner combo. I always scan at 600 DPI. After that part is done and the bitmap image is scanned to my computer, it's really just doing some heavy touchup. As I have alluded to in some recent posts, some of these sheets will take me an hour to an hour and a half just to clean up, because they have so many artifacts and dotty garbage on them. Settei at auction are mostly just scanned copies themselves after all, so there's a bit of residue to clean up. Ever wonder why sometimes I don't post these at a regular time of day? That's why, I'm still working on touchup before I post (and probably off from work, so I'm not prepping the night before, like when I post at a scheduled time).
Let's use this recent Gauss sheet as an example.
The original scan was pretty messy. Probably can't see it as well in tumblr resize scale, so here's the original scan. But it is dotted all over the place, there's like a smudge line which goes through the whole bottom of the sheet, where the "Final Draft" stamp, character/episode number marking is, and through some of Gauss' headshots as well. You can also probably see some black on the edges, where the sheet comes to an end within my scanner.
The first bit of touchup I usually do is within my image viewer. I use FastStone Image Viewer to help organize and view everything. In there, I will adjust the brightness, contrast, and sometimes the gamma, to get the sheet background a bit lighter and the lines darker.
I just like the number 14. Is it always 14? No. But that's usually my baseline starting point. After that's saved, into the photo editing program of choice we go. I match my brush color to the background white and just paint over all those ugly dots and wipe those black edges away.
Zoom in at 100% to try not to miss those artifacts you don't notice zoomed out. Look at Gauss' speckled fingers. Ugh, cleaning that stuff up is hell. But I do it, so you all can see clean-ish looking art. Do I get everything? No. But I try to at least get the major issues out of the way.
Some things I take liberties on. The shading on his jacket goes outside the lineart. Should I leave it as is for authenticity? Probably. But if I'm cleaning it, I'm gonna clean it all. So you'll see in the finished version I posted, those shading lines are all inside the lineart only.
Some people are jerks and could easily resell these settei just by printing scans and claiming them as original. Another way I try to have a way to differentiate my edits without slapping a watermark on is my editing of the text boxes. See the top left and bottom right of it above Netto? There's almost always some overhang on the originals. I have usually taken the liberty of editing that overlap line off, so that the text box is a clean rectangle where the line stops at each corner, as close as I can take it. It's a dumb, but simple way for me to tell if it's my edit.
Otherwise, that's really it. Just a lot of added effort in touchup, honestly.
Cel scans are a little different, because most of them are too big for either scanner. Especially cels with backgrounds. So many of those involve 2-4 scans and then stitching them all together. Much less touchup that I do to them, but otherwise it's mostly the same. 600 DPI, and some brightness/contrast or slight color saturation adjustments to them, if needed.
And now you know!

Hi! I was SO happy to come across your project to document the AG magazine recently, especially since I miss my childhood issues from the late 90s/early 2000s. In an effort to restore my collection, I've been purchasing issues from that time. I have several inserts and mini mags that you're missing as well as some magazines (like ones from 2001.) I would love to help out but I don't have a scanner at the moment. Do you have any scanners you'd recommend/what do you use to scan your magazines? Thanks a bunch for this incredible archiving work ~đ
Thank you so much for reaching out! I''m glad you've been enjoying the scans :)
I use a OpticSlim 1180 scanner to scan in my magazine issues. It's a 11.7" x 17.5" scanner that was gifted to me by family as I missed the oversized scanners I had access to in art college. Later on it dawned on me that this scanner would also make scanning every single AG issue a much more attainable goal than using my home scanner.
Between the cost and sheer size of this scanner, unless you have a lot of other planned uses for a scanner of this size, I wouldn't recommend getting it lightly. You may want to see if your local library has access to a scanner of this size, though! It might also be worth taking a look at local art schools & their libraries as well for any public access to oversized scanners.
For something to have at-home, I have a printer/scanner combo (HP Envy 7640) that I got 2nd hand from family. I've used it for plenty of scans on this blog; it's just a hassle scanning stuff that's too large for it. Scanning one-off big items isn't a big deal on it, but doing a project at the scale of the AG Magazine Scan Project would have taken much longer & be a nightmare.
Ultimately, just go with whatever scanner you have easy access to, weather it's at home or from your local library! If you're planning to send me scans, I'll be bringing them into Photoshop anyway to edit it anyway. As long as your scan is in 300 dpi and it's not a blurry mess, I can probably clean up the scan so it's legible and readable to the average viewer.

I kind of want to get a simpler cheaper laptop to use for non-art stuff, bc I like my heavy old charger-tethered beast for art-making but everything else I use it for has been slowing it down and making it frustrating to use at all, and also sometimes I don't want to have to go up to the studio to do something I don't want to or can't do on my phone or galaxy tablet. And the options are either get a PC for the studio, where the main cons are lack of touchscreen and $$$$$ (but the pros are customizing everything exactly to my needs and wants....) Or I get a second laptop to use for browsing and keeping 10000 ao3 fic tabs open at the same time as 100 random research pages and also maybe for making fanfic books tho the laser printer is in the studio now (not plugged in tho). So I did research and finally settled on a laptop (dell inspiron 3511 iirc, with Intel i5 11th generation cpu) . It's basically perfect, and of course I want touchscreen again bc seriously it's helpful to be able to manipulate things on the screen by hand not just with a mouse. It's under $600. I can afford it. BUT I've recently been spending way too much money way too often, even tho I feel like I need the things I've ordered for the most part even if some were impulse purchases, bc I constantly put off buying stuff and then buy a bunch of things at once later, so. Anyway but I just feel guilty and uncomfortable and like my spending is out of control but I can afford it currently.....and putting off buying a laptop yet again when I've needed it for awhile now seems silly.... plus I'm worried I'll be fired for messing up at work a bunch recently so I should buy things like this now and not put it off and then not be able to??? Idk. But then I need dental surgery again soon and that's like 2k combined (2 wisdom teeth need to be removed) which will set me back badly. Can I justify spending $589? But I need it so I can make my 1p+yr old hp envy into a solely-art-making computer and not end up needing to buy an entire PC or new art laptop (at least $1k) sooner than later................

Choose the Best Printers Compatible With Cricut [2024]
Printers play an important role in many Cricut projects that allow you to make unique stickers, labels, and other designs.
