Know any gaming myths to debunk?
Gaming myths have been around as long as games, from the earliest Sumerian board games to the latest video game for your brand new Nintendo 64. Here are a few popular myths over the years to debunk:
The Royal Game of Ur: According to the weekly cuneiform tablet of Lord Kotaqu VI, the Royal Game of Ur held a secret block that could be accessed by moving a stone left, right, left, and right and up and down several times. This was simply untrue and Kotaqu was executed for his charlatan magic.
Chess: Several early critics of the game of Chess claimed that the game's battlefield strategy emulation inspired violence, despite many studies showing that Chess players like Gandhi were no more likely to go to war than non-Chess players such as Napoleon, except in certain Sid Meier simulations.
Texas Hold-'Em Poker: Many poker players were prone to cheating, especially in the old west. There are claims that card manufacturers such as Bicycle and Hoyle began to include serial numbers and codes, such as letter "L" on the lower left corner of a card so that nobody could claim a 9 was a 6, and so on. Though this has never been proven, many still claim that the L is real.
Pong: In the 1970s, games went electronic and many myths developed about this strange new form of play. The first game, "Pong," was much like table tennis, and some players claimed that one could, with proper timing, pick up the "ball" pixel and throw it on the "roof" of the video screen. This was proven untrue as more people learned how computers worked.
Tomb Raider: As more teenagers played video games, playground rumors such as a "Nude Code" to show the game protagonist naked became popular. Though there is no nude code in Tomb Raider, there is one in Kirby's Dream Land, in which Kirby can appear nude but for shoes by starting the game in normal mode.
Dark Souls: With the complexity of the world of Dark Souls, many rumors and myths were spawned, such as the ability to fast-travel early, a hidden map behind an old fog gate, and even the ability to enter other games by switching discs during a load screen. This last bit was only true in one case, where replacing the game disc with Postal 3 would improve the quality of the Postal game by making it crash irrecoverably.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder: The newest Mario game's "Wonder" mechanics are strange and diverse, leading to many rumors about weird tricks they can result in. While the normal game can turn Mario into a sticky blob, make inanimate pipes crawl like inchworms, or illuminate previously invisible walkways, claims of Wonder effects that make the console explode, save money on your car's extended warranty, or even let you see real people's names and how many days they have left to live have mostly proven false. One Wonder effect that did prove real was a 79 step ladder that lets Mario climb into a developer room. The room didn't have all that much in it, but also, it's everything.

Time for some Psychonauts unpopular headcanon love. I love Psychonauts existing in the 2000s. According to extra info on social medias for the characters, the game was supposed to take place in 2001 (with Raz being born in 1991 according to his MySpace (which was later softretconned by the 10/15/1971 on Raz's ID card in the artbook but not the game)). I also really like video games in general, so I'm gonna go through some older games that I think the Junior Agents would like:
Raz is first introduced to games probably through Adam or Lizzie.
I could see Adam liking the idea of CDs that are game compilations. Especially with something like the Hoyle Board games.
Lizzie on the other hand, is more action heavy. Devil May Cry, GTA 3, Halo, Metal Gear Solid 2, Silent Hill 2. Games that Raz would NOT be allowed to watch, but Lizzie likes them all the same and helps Raz find some more kid friendly games. ESPECIALLY Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Gisu has access to Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 "but it's not as good as 2" in her words. She likes a lot more of the kid friendly games, like Jak and Daxter, Sonic Adventure 2, and some Final Fantasy games.
Norma doesn't really play any video games, but when she does it's usually against or with Adam playing his games.
Morris and Sam also never really got the video game craze, but Morris does donate his old top down Zelda games to Raz.

Happy 40th birthday to Kings Quest! All credit to cover images to people at MobyGames.
Notes and observations:
Original Kings Quest indeed does have 4 different covers, one being a release for the Sega's Master System. The other Kings Quest 1 after the 4th game is a remake made in SCI engine.
Kings Quest 5 also had a NES version, which I've excluded from this as the cover is the same as the second computer release.
King Graham's Board Games is part of a Crazy Nicks Software Picks, which is a series of minigames taken from various Sierra titles. Here the titular board games aren't actually from any Kings Quest game, but rather they're taken from Sierra's Hoyle Official Book of Games Volume 3. This also appears in some of the collections.
The first two collection releases are the same, they just have different covers.
I was originally gonna write how the second collection doesn't include the original Kings Quest in favor of the remake, but it does! Its just not specifically mentioned on the box. It also includes 3 other Roberta Williams games and 4 pre-KQ games running on Apple 2 emulator.
I've excluded the Roberta Williams Anthology from this as its not directly Kings Quest related. Its mostly the same as the second collection, with few other extras and the Apple 2 version of Dark Crystal.
The Windows XP collection curiously lacks the original Kings Quest game, sticking with just the remake; This for some reason was common with all the Sierra collections at the time. It also lacks Mask of Eternity, which was hard to get run properly at the time (and still might be, haven't checked in a while.)
The last game was released in 5 separate episodes along with an epilogue. Here I'll just go with the complete release.

Solitaire Suite, or Hoyle Board Games (on the computer)...
saw a poll on here where one of the categories was “I have over 300 hours in a single video game” and people were picking it and saying “I have way more than 300 hours!!” but they were all talking about games like ffxiv or overwatch where there’s a prolonged play element. that’s just not impressive to me. you’re SUPPOSED to have 300 hours in those games. what game do you have over 300 hours in that you absolutely should not be able to have 300 hours in? mine is the ace attorney trilogy

I guess i'm gonna do this now
the last song i listened to: fan song for MLP, "Together, Against the Sisters" [part of a series for a fan au thing, neat on its own but also part of neat whole]
favorite color: there's a lot of contenders. just put me down under "rainbow"
currently watching: amphibia actually [technically a lot of things that are being cycled through but that's the one i'm currently working on]
spicy/savory/sweet: Not Spicy
relationship status: with a beautiful gf with whom i watch a lot of tv for our dates
current obsession: Jump Chain
favorite board game: what even counts for this? if we include card games then solitaire but i doubt that. if sudoku counts then that. if it has to be something that explicitly has a board involved then... i think there was some game... gonna take a minute to see if i can reverse engineer what its called brb [goes to search browser]. okay i think it was snakes and ladders actually... hard to say for certain because the one i remember loving a lot was part of a disk by hoyle and the visuals aren't clicking in my brain [why yes my main experience of board games was via pc disks shut up]
coffee or tea: actual preference is tea but i will default to coffee [and one that is basically a caffeinated hot cocoa at that] for wake up/no thinky drink
favorite piece of clothing i own: some accessories like a handkerchief i wear around my neck
last movie i watched: drawing a blank... was it seriously when i rewatched Howl's Moving Castle for my birthday????
dogs or cats: how do you people insert memes i want to use that one from El Dorado where the guys are like "both? both. both is good"
and now to throw this at people... i could theoretically just put random stuff on but then i run the risk of finding a bot or something so time to see who i'm following [note: can be ignored]
@eldriwolf @broken-synchronicity @quantumseahorse
tagged my beloved @dearreader thank you sm 😭😭
the last song i listened to: in too deep by sum 41
favorite color: black
currently watching: attack on titan
spicy/savory/sweet: sweet > spicy > savoury
relationship status: dating the coolest girl to ever exist <3
current obsession: sword art online, taylor swift, tattoos, my chemical romance. think attack on titan is a new hyperfixation for sure
favorite board game: SCRABBLE. also monopoly, also dnd if it counts.
coffee or tea: tea
favorite piece of clothing i own: my eras tour hoodie or my black lacy leathery sparkly lingerie set. usually worn together.

This day in history: Bobby Fisher became the first American to win the World Chess Championship on September 1, 1972.
The James Smith Noel Collection marks this moment in American history by reflecting on the noble and strategic game of chess. The World Chess Championship began in 1866, though the game is much older and has various iterations throughout the world. For example, the Japanese game shogi is a version of chess known as the “Game of Generals,” which uses a gridded board with marked tiles and is played by two opponents using strategic moves against one another. Though historians are unsure when shogi was invented in Japan, the earliest accepted mention of the game is in the late 1050s through the mid-1060s. The game of chess has changed over time in both Eastern and Western cultures. The variation that Westerners are most familiar with came about in the 16th century, though the use of timers and pieces were not standardized until the 19th century when tournament-style competitions were developed.
Modern chess is derived from chaturanga, which is an Indian game that began before 600 A.D. The game spread through Asia and Europe and was adapted throughout various countries, resulting in the more common 16th-century iteration of chess, which is the predecessor of the version played today.
The modern chess game consists of a two-tone gridded board that hosts two sets of the same chess pieces in contrasting colors, the most common being black and white. In the 1809 London publication of An Easy Introduction to the Game of Chess, the first portion of the book gives a detailed breakdown of the chess-board and its pieces. It counts sixteen pieces for each player on the sixty-four square gridded gameboard as being: a King, a Queen, two Knights, two Bishops, two Rooks, and eight Pawns. The squares of the chess-board were numbered, 1-64 which indicates where the pieces are to start each game. The layout starts with the black king starting on 5 and the white king starting on 61. Once the board is set then An Easy Introduction to the Game of Chess discusses the movement of each piece.
According to Peter Pratt in An Easy Introduction to the Game of Chess, chess can seem to be a complicated game which uses strategic moves to win but also requires the player to learn the rules of the game. A later chapter gives various authors’ observational thoughts on chess; one states that “Chess is the only game, perhaps, which is played at for nothing; and yet the blood and brain as much as if the gamesters were contending for the deepest stakes.” The book concludes with a poem called “The Famous Game of Chesse-Play” by Jo. Barbier which was first printed in 1652.
The book concludes with a poem called “The Famous Game of Chesse-Play” by John Barbier, which was first printed in 1652.
The main book in the James Smith Noel Collection being highlighted here is not An Easy Introduction to the Game of Chess … (1809), but rather an older text which discusses popular games from the mid-1700s. Edmond Hoyle published a little text in 1761 which has a chapter titled: “Some Rules and Observations for playing well at Chess” in The polite gamester: containing short treatises on the games of whist, with an artificial memory, quadrille, backgammon, piquet and chess. This chapter has various hints for playing chess such as advising the reader to avoid moving their queen while focusing on pawns. It also advises against crowding the board with pieces so that the player doesn’t become too stressed against their opponent. The game of chess has been commonly viewed and depicted as a diversion for the upper class and noted as the “royal game” in the 15th century due to its popularity among nobility.
Since the 19th century, the game of chess has become more commonplace for all people regardless of their social status. Please enjoy a glance at three books from the J.S. Noel Collection, each highlighting the game of chess in three forms: instruction, sport, and poetry.
