#julywrapup — minus Ariel Gore’s We Were Witches, which I had to return to the library, and which I have scoured every bookstore that I’ve been in since. I’m pretty happy with this stack! Which was made larger over the course of my birthday weekend, and also the #24in48 readathon. Still not any poetry, though! I psyched myself out by deciding to create my own poetry annual — a notebook into which I would hand write my favorite poems of the year (an idea I discovered on twitter). I made a stack of all the poetry I’d already read this year, intending to go through them to find my favorites, when it finally occurred to me — I don’t have to order the books chronologically! Anyway, there will be lots more poetry in my August TBR. . . I’ve written about most of these books already so I won’t go into much detail here. So let’s say that my favorite book this month we We Were Witches, my favorite character was Rabeya from The Taqwacores, my favorite ending from Desdemona and the Deep. I was pleasantly surprised by NevermorEarth and How the Two Ivans Quarrelled, and experienced The Moon of the Crusted Snow most viscerally. . . I love seeing all of your monthly wrap ups! So, at almost the last second, I decided to sign up for the #24in48readathon. Originally I had planned to travel to the Detroit Festival of Books on Sunday instead, but today finally decided that it was too hot, and I don’t have any book money anyway. So, Readathon with the kids it is! . This is an unusually small #ReadathonTBR for me (I like to have lots of choices!), but I think we will go to the library first thing in the morning so I may add some books then. Plus, when my oldest son gets home from camp tonight, I will probably ask him for a rec or two, as is our tradition. . I am currently weirded out that there is no sff in this stack, but nothing on my shelves was grabbing me, except a couple of anthologies, which I don’t think would make good picks for a Readathon. . New book day! I took my nine-year-old to the buy-one-get-one book fair at school this morning (top row), then evidently I was feeling envious because SOMEHOW I ended up at the bookstore, scouring the used book section (bottom row). I am working on my TBR for #deweys24hourreadathon and I am not the only one — yesterday someone asked for novella recs on the readathon’s Facebook page and I *accidentally* spent an hour creating a novella shelf on goodreads and sorting which books should go on it. If you haven’t noticed yet, novellas are one of my “things,” so I was very ready to throw together a stack. These are all novellas that I have read and would heartily recommend! Why am I talking about this as connected to the readathon? Well I don’t know about you, but about halfway through I tend to get anxious about WHAT DO I HAVE TO SHOW FOR MYSELF and like to knock back a couple of novellas and/or graphic novels before I am ready to pick up something weightier again.
