Title: Wandering Feet
Summary: Soonyoung moves to the humming coming from the forest, one with the wind, movement as fluid as the water in the pond. One day, the melodies came with a voice that is too much to ignore. That day, Soonyoung wandered off to the forest he had been warned about his whole life.
Status: Complete
The Kwon clan goes way back to the founding of the town; one of the pioneers of the settlement means that the family has a more prominent responsibility for the town's overall welfare–soon enough, Soonyoung will learn the extent of it.
The clan’s compound sits on the edge of the forest as they have officially been the gatekeeper between the town and the forest. Determined to keep the people safe, Soonyoung's ancestors made sure none would get past the family's fortress to the forest and nothing would get out of the forest without any of the Kwons knowing.
When he was six, Soonyoung started hearing some humming whenever he spent time by the pond at the back of the compound, just northeast of his uncle's house where the Kois swim freely. He liked listening to them, sometimes Soonyoung saw how the soft beats matched the movements of the fish.
Two years later, Soonyoung started trying to move to the beat–his limbs moving with the flow of the humming and the flicks of the fins of the Kois in the pond. The cold breeze coming from the nearby ocean accompanying his movements, cooling him down as his movements become bigger.
At the age fourteen, Kwon Soonyoung had become more confident with matching his movements to the melodies and beats he had been hearing. At this age, Kwon Soonyoung had fully accepted that he wouldn't ever know where the music were coming from. He could and probably should have told an elder, anyone from the family really, about the music he had been hearing, but he never did–afraid that something would be done and he wouldn't be able to hear it again.
On his fifteenth birthday, Soonyoung made the decision to keep one of the gates facing the forest ajar. They just got back from the funeral service of his uncle and with the lack of a child, the portion of the house is now passed down to Soonyoung. Tonight, in his funeral clothes, the forest plays him a somber song. Tonight, Soonyoung sits still by the gate, letting his tears finally flow down as the music continues to accompany him.
The following year, Soonyoung starts spotting movement from the treeline nearest to his gate. Usually by the time the song finishes, they would be there. The person, or maybe something else entirely would be right there–just standing and observing. Sometimes, Soonyoung is sure they are making eye contact as he catches his breath after his dance. Maybe he's imagining it, maybe not. One thing is for sure, he knows that he's not supposed to interact.
When he turned eighteen, his mother gave him a talisman and a warning. She told him that it has been known to her that his gates had been open some nights and it's not supposed to be done as it meant invitation. For that, he should be careful not to let anyone in from the other side. That day, Soonyoung didn't have the heart to tell her his plan to visit the forest himself. To finally see himself where the music and now a full song is coming from. Soonyoung doesn't exactly know when it started, he just knows that one day, when he was listening intently, a voice started accompanying the melodies that had accompanied him for a long time. The voice sang to him tonight as it always did every night, but there's something different about it now. Now that Soonyoung had finally acknowledged it, the voice sounds sweeter, more enticing, a little bit more inviting.
Soonyoung looks back once again–he knows he’d be back, it's just another walk. A walk to the forest, but a walk nonetheless. A chilly breeze from the ocean reaches him once again as he steps out of the compound proper to walk the short distance to the first line of trees. With his trembling hand, Soonyoung makes sure that the lamp shines through the path he’s on as he walks deeper to the forest, the other hand leaving the painted rocks on the forest floor or on top of a tree root. Only if he had been paying a little more attention would he see little animals taking them, disappearing with them into the moonlit but otherwise dark forest. Only if he had been paying a little more attention would he see the multiple pairs of eyes watching him make his way through the very place his own family had warned him not to wander off to his whole life. Only if he had not listened to the voice calling out to him, he would not be here.
He finds a walking path that is somehow lit up and in a distance he hears a rushing of water, Soonyoung decides to follow the sound with dragonflies accompanying him; adding light for him. He reaches a waterfall and a genuine gasp of surprise leaves his mouth as he sees the person he had seen in the treeline years ago. Soonyoung hadn't been sure if the person was a girl or a boy at the time; just that they had fair skin that seems to glow and a long black hair that seems to reflect the light of the moon–they still basically look the same, only that the hair is now a little shorter and that some of it is covering their forehead.
“You’ve finally come.” Soonyoung feels warm. The stranger's voice feels like a comforting quilt on a chilly winter evening. “I almost thought we won't get to celebrate your birthday.” The stranger smiles at him and walks to where Soonyoung plants himself.
“You’re waiting for me?” He finally found his voice, although he has millions of questions, Soonyoung feels like nothing matters now.
“I know you like my songs.” The stranger tilts his head, offering a small smile again before taking the lamp from Soonyoung's hand.
“Wait!” Soonyoung calls out when the stranger walks past him to the gazebo nearby. “You're not from town.”
“No, I’m not.” The stranger confirms, looking amused. Soonyoung still can't fathom how they could look so ethereal covered in white with no single mud on them despite being in the forest.
“Who are you?” He finally asks.
“I can't give you my real name.” The stranger purses his lips, as if considering something. “But you may call me Woozi.”
“Woozi.” Soonyoung repeats and Woozi smiles at him again. “My name is–”
“Let's call you Hoshi!” Woozi immediately cuts him off, hurrying off to where Soonyoung is to cover his mouth with his hand. “I know who you are. But, here, you are Hoshi.” Woozi's eyes him, looking for confirmation of his understanding. When Soonyoung nods, Woozi smiles again and takes his hand, leading them to the gazebo.
Soonyoung looks at the spread on the top of a pale blue cloth at the center of gazebo are some of his favorite foods. Although he had a hefty dinner not too long ago, looking at the food the other clearly prepared made Soonyoung's stomach quiver with anticipation.
“Come sit, Hoshi.” Woozi invites him, using the name he had given him. “I hope you don't mind, I prepared this for us.”
Soonyoung, although still a little confused, offers a smile. “You're speaking as if you knew I'd be coming.” No answer but a small smile. For now, Soonyoung decides that that's all.
If Soonyoung had listened to his mother's numerous advice through the years, Soonyoung would not bite into the strawberry that’s being offered. If Soonyoung had listened to his father’s incessant warnings, Soonyoung would not drink from the Woozi’s cup. Only if Soonyoung had listened to the elders of the town, he would not let himself be led by Woozi deeper into the forest. Only if Soonyoung had listened, his parents would have never mourned him for years to come, hoping for their son to return from the forest.
