Birder, photographer and educator, @wingtrip is continuing to takeover our account this week and highlighting some of his favorite birds that migrate through the Skagit Valley. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “One of the best things about the Skagit Valley in winter are the birds. The Snow Geese population is particularly well known, showing up en masse, mostly from a nesting colony on Wrangell Island in Russia. We get a portion, around 50,000 birds, of the now close to 100,000 pairs of birds that nest on the island deep in the Arctic. We shouldn’t take these numbers for granted, in the 1970s the population nesting on the island was in severe decline and has only rebounded with the establishment of Wrangel as a reserve. Interestingly, the Skagit was once only a temporary stopover. The majority of geese would continue on to the Central Valley in California. Now at least 60% of the birds that migrate down the Pacific Flyway end up staying between here and the Fraser River Valley in Canada. I love getting out into the valley to enjoy the masses of birds, a spectacle I feel fortunate to see. The thundering of a flock of ten thousand birds taking off at once, their collective voices, leaves me overwhelmed. Y'all can just expect flower posts every day...I'm desperate for summer. This is the Camassia flower, which apparently is both part of the lily and asparagus family. We were informed by a wise older gentleman today that the Indians used to roast the bulbs of the plants over several days, with the end result being very similar to potatoes! How neat is that?! These particular Camas are a beautiful purple blue, but others can be white from what I've seen, there are multiple varieties. They grow mainly in the prairies, its amazing to have these at a project so local!
