Ughhh you're so right 😭😭 I genuinely think Kunikida is one of Asagiri's best written characters and I will die on this hill. It just makes me so sad to think that he was just sidelined because the editors and producers wanted to satisfy the fans. It just makes me wonder what we could have had if there wasn't any pressure to focus on fan favorites 😭
It's always been such a major disappointment to see how the anime always did him dirty, reducing his character to being "angry, violent, abusive" or whatever the haters like to interpret him as. Don't even get me started on the skk shippers 😭 They have all the material in the world to keep them happy but they would still feel threatened by a relatively small group of knkdz lovers 🥲
I would honestly appreciate anything in favor of a good Kunikida arc, heck it doesn't even have to be knkdz at this point 😭 Our man deserves better!!!
If I had a nickel for every time Kunikida's enemies tried to feel him up from the back, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that happened twice–
Tumblr media
Like bro didn't even have to lean in so close but I get it, he's just so goddamn fine I'd try to sneak a little kiss on his cheek too
Tumblr media
From the recent lecture with Asagiri Rough translation:
"I originally created Kunikida and Dazai as partners, but their action scenes are gradually decreasing… and Chuuya has ended up taking the spotlight.
I want to give Kunikida more of an active role. The Kunikida-Dazai duo is the kind of duo I feel like I could write endlessly about if I had the time."

Love Letters w/ Fyodor Dostoevsky
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ “I would've read your love letters every single night, and prayed to God you'd be comin' home alright”
• His love letters are romantic and very detailed, making sure he conveys exactly how much he misses you. He likes to write you short poems, understanding how much your heart swoons at the sweet and romantic words.
• Fyodor writes to you while he's in Yokohama, telling you how his plans are going and his estimated time of arrival at home. He continues this habit, even when in Mersault. He sends letters to you via the manipulated vampire guards, instructing them to take great care of the thin envelopes.
Scenario !! ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥
Your heart beats quickly as you made your way to your mailbox to check for a letter from your lover; already prepared for the slight sadness you'd experience should the small compartment be void of a note, yet still excited for the possibility of receiving one.
You excitedly open the door to the mailbox, grabbing the numerous envelopes that filled it. Sifting through them, you start to loose hope before your eyes land on the slightly sloppy handwriting of your boyfriend. You drop the various other things on the table, including bills and junk mail in order to pry open the letter excitedly. You make sure to do it carefully though as not to rip anything.
Once you've successfully separated the paper from the envelope, you lay down on the couch on your front while giggling excitedly. You unfold the paper and start to read the comforting and familiar handwriting, feeling as though this letter was a warm and sweet hug from the Russian man.
“My dearest, Y/N,
I know I restate the same thoughts in every letter I send to you, but I truly miss you more than anything in the outside world, including my freedom. I am perfectly fine in captivity, but it truly makes my heart ache to be without my love for so long. I hope you are doing well and holding up without me, not because I doubt your individuality, but I know just how much you miss me. It is the same way for me in this prison. Even with Dazais company, my heart doesn't feel nearly as full as it does when you are around, my dear. However, when our plan succeeds, we will get the happily ever after we deserve. As for our plans, they are going as intended currently.
I cannot wait to embrace you again and to feel the reassuring sensation of your breathing against my skin and feel your arms wrapped around me so tightly and lovingly. Though I would have went about my plans regardless of your support or not, I still appreciate you staying and supporting this, although I can only imagine it has caused you much stress. No worries though, my dear, we will prevail in the end no matter the obstacles. In the meantime, here is an excerpt from a poem I memorized many years ago, I feel it may catch your interest and reassure you a bit.
Wait for me, and I’ll be back,
Disregard the fate,
In the morning with my bag,
Should you only wait.
They will hardly understand,
How I could survive.
Waiting me from foreign land,
You have saved my life.
Let them say that it’s too late.
What you feeling tells?
I’ll be back, because you wait
Like nobody else.
Again, I miss you dearly. Just in case I needed to rephrase it, my heart will not rest until you are back in my presence, for I feel our souls are intertwined. I cannot wait to reunite with with you, my love. I will see you soon.
Sincerely, Fyodor Dostoevsky”
Your heart couldn't help but flutter as you held the letter to your chest, having rolled over onto your back. Your face is warm with blush as you smile and laugh. It was beyond you how Fyodor could remember all of the information he knew, as well as numerous languages and poetry, but you certainly weren't complaining. After all, your boyfriends sweet sayings made your day every time without fail. With every letter he sent, you only became more impatient for his return.
Eloping w/ Chuuya Nakahara
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ “And run away and left it all behind, you still would've been mine, we would've been timeless”
• Eloping with Chuuyas is such a fulfilling act, especially when you don't have people whispering in your ear about how dangerous it could be.
Scenario !! ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥
Romantic relationships with port mafia executives as an outsider or regular civilian were frowned upon in the organization, meaning if you and Chuuya were going to be together, you needed to be sneaky about it. The port mafia had connections all over the city, which really limited your options for dates, but you were both content with just lounging in each other's homes.
You loved leaning against his chest on his couch, a movie playing softly in the background as you both cuddled together. You liked cooking with him in your kitchen, making a mess together while giggling and then having to clean it up together. Every time you would just sit in his arms in your back yard, watching the wind blow the flowers and leaves around, was a memory with Chuuya that you were grateful for.
So, when your lover proposed the idea of elopement to you, you were over the moon. You had always wanted to marry him, youve know that he was your soulmate from the get go. Even in a billion lifetimes, you felt as though you would find each other repeatedly. You said yes, ofcourse, and started planning immediately.
It had gone exactly according to plan, too. The both of you wore rather nice clothing for the actual ceremony, exchanging pretty rings and slipping them on to one anothers fingers. The kiss you shared, the first one of your elopement, was like no other. It felt sweeter with emotion and certainly tasted that way, too, because of Chuuyas cherry chapstick. You held each other's hands tightly as you quickly walked out of the courthouse, getting into the car that had been packed with as many necessary belongings as possible, including but not limited to clothing, legal documents, and money.
Sure, the luxury of a port mafia salary was one that would probably be missed by the both of you, allowing a nicer place to stay and finer wines to drink, but you could live with Chuuya in a rundown shack for all he cared. As long as he was with you, he would be perfectly happy. Chuuya is a romantic at heart under his tougher exterior, only letting bits and pieces of that romanticism slip through the cracks.
Chuuya drove with you down long and winding roads, the both of you deciding to end the day by stargazing while sitting on the trunk of the car. You sat on Chuuyas lap, his face pressed against your back. He drew soft shapes on any part of skin within his reach, even tracing out letters and words, spelling terms of endearment such as "my love".
"You know, I don't doubt one bit that mafia affiliates could be lurkin' around here, but it's much less likely. Something like this would be frowned upon real hard back home, which is why I feel I will never regret this decision." He says, speaking straight from his heart, not caring about vulnerability anymore. He had you, and you would be the very last person to take advantage of such a delicate thing.
A grin tugs at the corner of your lips with enough force to change your facial expression immediately. You leaned back into his touch, your hand caressing his that sat against your abdomen, hugging you closer to him. "I won't ever regret it either. I'll never regret any decision I make for you, my love." You softly murmur, looking up at the stars in the beautiful, blue night sky. The blue night sky filled with glamorous and shiny stars, yet they could never compare to the shimmery glint in Chuuyas eyes every time he came around you. The blue night sky that provided a calming darkness in the world, allowing you to further relax against your, now husband's, body.
"I'll always love you, darlin', I'm so happy I can openly have you now." He speaks quietly against your shoulder, almost whispering. You reach your hand back to gently touch his hair a bit. "Me too, my love. Me too."
Crowded Streets w/ Nikolai Gogol
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ “In another life, you still would've turned my head, even if we met on a crowded street in 1944”
• Should you meet Nikolai during one of his street performances and accidentally fall victim to his juggling skills (or lack there of) , he would look forward to seeing you around the town and in the streets again to make up for his fumble with an entertaining mini-show.
Scenario !! ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥
Walking through the busy streets, your eyes fell upon a tall man, dressed as a jester while standing on the sidewalk. "A street performer." You simply thought, trying to discreetly glance at him without making eye contact and avoid the make believe obligation to give him money. You noticed that he was juggling, tossing three red balls in the rotational pattern while blabbering on about random things to passersby.
You lowered your head as to not look at him or make eye contact as you started to pass him, before you're head jerks right back up at the loud man's voice saying "watch out!". Right in front of your face was one of the red, foam spheres, kept motionless between two bony, lanky fingers covered in the cloth of the mans red gloves.
"Aw, I'm real sorry, darlin'! That sure was close, wasn't it?" He says, his bright, toothy grin glimmering in the sunlight. You nod, inhaling and steadying your heart rate.
"Yeah, no worries though, it didn't actually hit me." You say, a bit embarrassed by the situation for seemingly no reason. He slinks backwards into a completely upright position. "I wouldn't have let it hit you regardless, sweet cheeks." He says as he creates a portal and tosses his props into the yellow opening. He rests his fingers on his chin while examining you. "You've got quite a lovely complexion! You must be quite popular when it comes to romantic affairs, I'm sure of it." He compliments. The other people bustling by make you topple a bit as their shoulders bump into yours. Nikolai gently grabs your hand and leads you away from the crowd into a more spacious area.
"You're quite handsome if I do say so myself. Especially that scar." You say, pointing at the healed wound. He smiles. "Well thank you, how sweet is that." He excitedly beams. He removes his hat from his head and slightly bows towards you. "I have yet to formally introduce myself, I am Nikolai Gogol." He says, adjusting his posture yet again to be standing straight up. You smile. "Hello, Nikolai. My name is Y/n." You smile with your arms crossed in front of your chest.
"Well then, Y/n, can I ask you if you enjoy quizzes?" He asks, his head tilted, gravity dragging the long braid along with his movements. You furrow your eyebrows a little. "I'm not too fond of the academic ones, if I'm being honest. Silly ones I don't mind." You say with a small shrug of your shoulders. He laughs.
"Perfect! Let me quiz you then, Y/n." He takes your hands in his excitedly. "Are you aware of the difference between a jester and a clown?" He says, his face about the length of a outstretched palms thumb to pinky tip away from yours. You think for a moment before speaking. "Clowns follow a routine, whereas jesters are more spontaneous and satirical, no?" You say, gazing into his eyes, surprising yourself with your eagerness to hear words of confirmation or denial slip from between his crimson painted lips. He pulls back and claps a bit.
"That's right! Marvelous! How smart you are." He says, removing his hat and placing it on top of your head. "Not many people get that right, you know? Many peoples first answer revolves around a jester being a part of a royal court, but that is simply not their differentiating characteristic." He says, patting your shoulder with a grin. You keep eye contact for a couple of seconds before he erupts into a fit of snickers.
"I'm around this area often during the week. You should come see me, I can promise to give you the very best show I can muster." He grins and with that, he is gone through a portal. He has left you there, a bit flustered as you held onto the hat tightly. You suppressed the excitement in your heart before sneaking out into the crowded pathways once again. Maybe you would take him up on that.

BSD 109 SPOILERS!!!
Theories regarding... certain events.
So in order to cope with the events of bsd 109, I have a working theory that Yosano could possibly save Dazai's life.
Firstly, I believe the last time we saw her was in Anne's room after everyone (but Dazai) reunited and before everyone split off. It's possible that at some point soon after this, Dazai was able to communicate with Ango and call for some aid. Granted, I'm not quite sure the exact timeline of events rn.
It may be plausible that between this time and the present, Yosano and maybe Kyouka(?) could have made their way to France and the Mersault prison and were able to break in after Dazai took out all the guards and the prisonbreak competition began. Maybe Dazai even got them in when he was still able to utilize the cat lady's ability.
Anyway, we know from the 55 Minutes ln that Yosano is able to use her ability on Dazai in VERY specific circumstances that involve him being basically dead enough that nullification won't activate but just barely alive enough that he's able to be saved. It may be possible for Yosano to come and save Dazai using her ability this way.
Additionally, and I've seen this brought up a lot on Twitter, but Chuuya's shot to Dazai's head seems to have... something wrong with it. For all intents and purposes, he should NOT have been able to speak. Credit to @starzais on Twitter for this observation.
I also saw a theory by @ VannyStarBSD on Twitter basically saying that it's possible Chuuya has some consciousness and thus covered up the shot to the head, bc there seems to be something wrong with it. Why didn't the bullet go thru to the wall? Why can Dazai still speak? Why was there some smoke or something covering the panel where he actually got shot? It all just seems too off. Maybe Chuuya utilized his gravity ability to somehow stop/limit the damage of the bullet? Here's a link to that thread because I won't be able to do it justice
I don't know how plausible either of these theories are. It'd be very difficult for Yosano to not only get to France from Japan but also get into the prison in the first place, especially without Fyodor taking notice. As for the Chuuya theory, it all banks on him having a certain amount of consciousness... which I'm not entirely convinced of, mostly because of the appearance of his eyes in this chapter. I think the most consciousness he would have regained was right before he "drowned."
Either way, I also don't think it makes narrative sense for Dazai to die right now. Asagiri rarely kills people when their stories are incomplete unless they're a side character. For him to go and kill off the most popular character before he's gotten a chance to find a reason to live doesn't make sense to me, especially in such a... weird way. A brainwashed Chuuya shooting him just doesn't seem like his way to go.
I've touched on this before, but Asagiri is a big fan of absurdism in his storytelling, the idea that the characters who succeed are those who fight even when things seem hopeless. For Dazai to lay down and die after trying so hard doesn't make narrative sense. Plus, we know that Asagiri loves scaring us with fake-out deaths, and Dazai's evaded death a number of times, so for these reasons outside the actual in-story ones, I'm not sure I'm quite convinced he's truly gone just yet.

There's a Will; There's a Way (Book 4) Chapter Nineteen
Dazai Osamu x Fem! Reader
Chuuya Nakahara x Fem! OC
Chapter Nineteen: Burning End
Summary: Dazai faces Fyodor while (Y/N) and Akira fight at the airport.
Mouse Note: This is in the anime, but it's rewritten because manga spoilers are coming! Please keep that in mind! I will also be posting Chapter Twenty with slight changes today, but Chapter Twenty-One, tomorrow, will have major major manga spoilers.
            The world was ending.
l
“My, look at this,” said Fyodor as the doors of Mersault opened up. “A perfect starry night, befitting Dazai’s end.”
“Goal!” cried Gogol. “Fyodor makes it to the finish line in first place! Absolutely fantastic. My very best friend, everyone! So damn awesome!”
“Save the acclamations, please,” said Fyodor. He put his hands on his hips. “The thing.”
Gogol swirled his cape, and a case appeared. “You mean this?” He opened it to reveal the antidote to the poison. Fyodor reached for it, but Gogol closed it. “But first! May I ask you something? Dazai was using his pulse to encode his messages to the outside. How were you communicating?”
Fyodor smirked. “It’s simple.” He glanced behind him at the various guards walking out of Mersault. “Using them.” The guards removed their helmets to reveal they were vampires.
“I see,” said Gogol. “You had accomplices within the Mersault security forces.” He smiled. “Now it’s yours.” He tossed the case to Fyodor.
“Indeed.” Fyodor walked past Gogol to the helicopter.
“Aren’t you taking the antidote?” called Gogol.
“I’ll take it on the helicopter,” said Fyodor. He reached for the door and frowned at his injured hand. He tsked and narrowed his eyes. Dazai had actually managed to injure him. That was fine. It wouldn’t stop him from getting to (Y/N). Dazai was dead, after all.
He glanced back. “I can’t pilot the helicopter with my injuries. Please take the stick.”
The vampires obediently shuffled into the helicopter and started it up while Fyodor reclined in the back.
“By the way, what became of Sigma?” asked Gogol curiously.
“He was brave,” said Fyodor, smirking. “He’ll never awaken again, though.”
“Those who oppose you always meet an untimely demise,” remarked Gogol. “What about you? What will you do, once you’re out of here?”
“Just as you said,” said Fyodor. His eyes narrowed, and his smirk sharpened. “For starters, you tried to kill me, so I’ll erase you.
Gogol grinned. “I like it! It’s the beginning of a new game.” He turned away, letting Fyodor leave.
The case clattered to the ground.
Gogol blinked and turned around in interest. “Oh, dear. Do you really want to be treating the antidote like that?”
            Blood dripped onto the case.
Fyodor coughed and wheezed as the vampire in front pushed sharp baton farther into his stomach. Fyodor gripped it and tried to stop it, but the weapon was forced farther in, and blood continued to drip from the widening wound.
“How did this happen?!” said Gogol.
            “What a shame.”
Gogol and Fyodor’s head snapped to the entrance of Mersault. Fyodor gritted his teeth.
“I was so close to dying. But you see…You can’t kill me.” Dazai stepped into the clear air and smiled triumphantly.
“Dazai…” said Fyodor, forcing the frustrated word out of his mouth, even as blood choked him and he coughed. “How…”
Dazai smirked. “Unlike you, I don’t have control over all things.” He strolled closer to the helicopter. “My hand was full of uncertain cards. But you had one weakness: You don’t trust anything you can’t manipulate. Allies. Bram took back his special ability at the airport. Ranpo negotiated with him and had him take over the vampire piloting the helicopter. It wasn’t anything we could have planned ahead of time, but I trusted that’s what Ranpo would do.”
Fyodor’s eyes narrowed and glared with pure fury at Dazai.
Dazai grinned at his anger. “In fact, if I had to bet, I think (Y/N) removed the sword. She always does the impossible.”
Fyodor’s rage turned on Dazai. “But you were shot in the head!”
Dazai grinned and touched his forehead. “Oh, this?” He shrugged. “Yeah, that hurt. That dumbass was supposed to go easy.” He smiled fondly, though.
“Who are you calling a dumbass?” said a sharp voice.
Fyodor’s eyes widened in true shock before he made the connection. “I see…”
“Chuuya was never a vampire to begin with,” said Dazai.
Chuuya flicked the contacts he’d taken from his eyes away. He cursed when the fake fangs refused to budge. “Fucking hell, it’s not coming out! Wretched boss glued it in!”
“It was all an act,” said Dazai, walking towards the helicopter and picking up the case. “I was only able to get out of the elevator because Chuuya manipulated gravity.” He stared at Fyodor in satisfaction as the man suffered. “And then, Chuuya shoots me in the head. The bullet stops at my skull. We used to do this all the time, remember?”
“Suck it!” shouted Chuuya grumpily, still fumbling with the teeth.
Dazai chuckled before returning to Fyodor. “You couldn’t see how fast the bullet was traveling through the security camera. Also, the water attack was only to distract you from my actual goals, you see.”
“You actual goal?” asked Fyodor, hands trying to stop his bleeding. It was useless.
“That wound.” Dazai pointed victoriously at Fyodor’s injured hand. “With your hand injured, you’d have no choice but to let the vampire take the cockpit.” He leaned over Fyodor and smirked. “Remember my face, Fyodor. Remember who beat you. Remember that I sent you to Hell, and (Y/N) is out of your reach for good. She was never going to be yours. Your darkness won’t taint her light.” He stepped back, ever as Fyodor angrily reached for him lurching in his seat. “Goodbye.”
The vampire directed the helicopter into the sky.
            “Wait!” shouted Fyodor.
The helicopter spun and slammed into Mersault. It crashed to the ground, and Dazai, Chuuya, and Gogol watched the crumpled vehicle break apart. The engine sparked and turned to flame.
“Ah…Angelic light…” Fyodor’s last words filtered out into the air.
And then the helicopter exploded. Dazai watched Fyodor burn in satisfaction. Only once the flames died down did he approach, but he waited with patient satisfaction.
“So, is that anemic jackass dead?” said Chuuya.
Dazai picked up Fyodor’s arm, the only piece of him they could identify. “Yeah. Fyodor’s dead. There’s no doubt.”
“I see.” Gogol walked up solemnly.
“Congrats, Nikolai,” said Dazai. “You wanted to kill him, didn’t you?”
“Yeah. I certainly did.” Gogol paused. “No…I didn’t. No…” He reached out and took the amputated arm. “You’re right. I never exchanged many words with Fyodor. But my life since I met him felt nothing like it did prior. Fyodor was right. I fought so I could lose myself. Now, I…” He fell to his knees.
            Dazai turned and walked away.
“What happened to your usual snark?” said Chuuya.
“Nah. Not today,” said Dazai. He lifted the case. “I got the antidote, too. Let’s go.” His gaze hardened. “The fight isn’t over. And I need to make sure someone is alright.” (Y/N), my light.
“Yeah…so do I,” said Chuuya. His mind went to Akira.
“Aw, is Chuuya going soft?” said Dazai.
“You wish, bastard!” said Chuuya. “Let’s just keep going.”
Dazai and Chuuya approached the helicopter touching down at Mersault. They got on, solemnly escorted by some of the Port Mafia men actually left after the vampire outbreak. Dazai opened the case and injected himself with the antidote, sighing in relief.
“What, not excited to die?” said Chuuya, finally getting the fangs out and throwing them out the window.
“This would have been a painful death. I’m not interested in that,” said Dazai, shrugging.
“I can give you a death right here,” challenged Chuuya.
“You just had the chance to kill me and didn’t! How changeable, Chuuya,” chirped Dazai.
“Tsk. I wanted that bastard dead first,” muttered Chuuya. “He’s causing enough trouble to somehow be as irritating as you.”
“Don’t compare me to Fyodor,” said Dazai, voice turning cold.
Chuuya paused and narrowed his eyes. He understood his former partner better than most. “He really got under your skin, didn’t he?”
“He threatened someone who’s truly important to me,” said Dazai. “I don’t take lightly to it.”
Chuuya nearly shivered. He remembered that tone. That was the voice of Dazai the Demon Prodigy, the Port Mafia executive that destroyed enemy organizations like they were nothing, killing for the thrill. Fyodor should count himself lucky he got such a quick death. Chuuya suspected that if Dazai wasn’t unwilling to risk his escape, he would have made sure Fyodor properly suffered for threatening the person close to Dazai.
“Well!” Dazai brightened and smiled. “He’s dead and burning in hell now, so that’s all the matters!”
An irk mark appeared on Chuuya’s forehead. “Don’t go acting all giddy now! We’ve still got vampires and the Decay of the Angel on our hands!”
“Oh, that?” Dazai waved a hand. “I mean, we’ll just be cleanup.”
“Cleanup?! Fukuchi has his sword, bandage-wasting bastard,” hissed Chuuya.
“So? (Y/N)’s there. And she’s more than enough to handle him,” said Dazai. Was he worried about her? Of course. He loved her, how could he not worry? “For now, let’s check on Sigma.”
Chuuya raised a brow. “Isn’t he dead?”
“Maybe, maybe not. But he and Dostoevsky had a talk supposedly, and I want to know what it was about,” said Dazai. If it had anything to do with (Y/N), Dazai wanted to know. She was strong, but he loved her. He couldn’t help but want to protect her.
But fundamentally, he knew the truth of her strength—where (Y/N) had the will; she’d find a way.
l
(Y/N) landed before Fukuchi in a swirl of green light. She stood from her crouched position, gift still alive and ready for a fight as Fukuchi regarded her with surprise and a measure of expectance. He held his sword in one hand and One Order the radio in the other. (Y/N)’s eyes zeroed in on it immediately, and Theres a Will; There’s a Way hummed as it sensed the power radiating from One Order.
“Come to die just like your companions?” said Fukuchi.
(Y/N)’s gaze passed over Akira and Fukuzawa’s fallen figures, blood pooling beneath them. Her eyes returned to him, and she stood tall and strong as ever.
“No. I’ve come to give the world life.”

Note
half of this may seem incoherent because i am allowed one big brain moment per week and that ask was it, but I do have a response! half of this response is from my friend bc I ran to them like “I’m talking w this person about the finale + fyozai and this is too many braincells for me” 😭
anyway! starting off with the vampires:
- Fyodor did have control of the vampires as ordered by Fukuchi, because he was communicating with the outside using the Mersault guards, and hijacked the elevator also using his Mersault guards. but naturally, fighting against Dazai, Fyodor likely called for Chuuya both to poke at their bond/keep that card away from Dazai, and because Chuuya is stronger with more specialized abilities than any random guard - e.g. how he pulled the door trick to escape drowning
- and I don’t have a real answer for Fyodor not noticing Chuuya being a vampire except for the fact that Fyodor is simply arrogant. he believed his plan was perfect, he believed he had the genius to fight against Dazai (“you’re so sure you’re going to win?” “obviously”) and Chuuya looked the part, plus Fyodor had more things on his mind than checking in depth that Chuuya is actually vampirized by the vampirism ability Fyodor currently knows to be absolute.
- and along with that, Fyodor doesn’t actually canonically know that much about SKK. he had to steal Ace’s files to figure out Chuuya’s ability, and while he knew about SKK’s bond he didn’t know the actual depth of it. he called it shallow, and while he may have been mocking Dazai I do think he didn’t know much more than background checks of them both. the fact the Demon Prodigy hadn’t been active for four years helped. Fyodor likely didn’t know SKK don’t need to actually talk to communicate.
plus, in order for Fyodor to get Chuuya to help, he had to have called for him or have him sent or smth. for that to happen, Chuuya had to have some record of being vampirized - someone higher up, e.g. Fukuchi or another vampire who reports to him or someone, idk, has to have already seen him vampirized, so it is already known that Chuuya is a viable asset for them. another point for Fyodor believing that Chuuya is a vampire, and not needing to check.
finally for this, my friend points out that Akutagawa, proclaimed “strongest ability user in the PM” was vampirized (and has a theory that Dazai did that on purpose, both showing that someone like him can be vampirized and cutting off Fyodor’s available cards to play, further allowing Dazai access to Chuuya in prison) so Fyodor had no reason to believe that Chuuya wasn’t. if Akutagawa and a majority of the PM were vampirized, Fyodor could have full belief that one strong executive had also been vampirized.
now, for Fyodor’s trust in people and manipulation:
- a vital difference between Fyodor and Dazai is also pointed out in the waitress/subordinate conversation they had in prison. Fyodor cuts off every other option until his own is the only viable one for the waitress; Dazai tells Fyodor to act lazy and allows the subordinates’ own nature to push them into working. see, the subordinates in that scenario have multiple options; they could choose to snap at Dazai or make him work instead of themself working due to Dazai’s perceived laziness. on the other hand, the waitress has no options because Fyodor has cut all of them off.
therefore, while Dazai is trusting that his coworker who he knows very well will choose this one specific path, and carry all of it out perfectly in time to save him with 4+ people involved, Fyodor is only trusting that a person who’s consistently wanted something will go after exactly what they want still - e.g. the man he’s been manipulating into committing war crimes the way Fyodor wants him to. Fyodor is only trusting that Fukuchi wants to get what he wants; Dazai is trusting in his allies to choose, entirely by themselves, to help him. (which gives me the note that I have thought of an AU where the Agency leaves Dazai in Mersault and it’s a very tasty idea)
- and along with this, Fyodor isn’t actually trusting that Fukuchi will go after what he wants. he is partially, but even if that fails he’s trusting in his own ability to counter the unknowns. he and Dazai aren’t actually… idk how to word it. they don’t actually manipulate everything into falling the way they want to from the start; they’re reactive. take the Q situation: Dazai was surprised by the fact the PM let Q out, he was genuinely taken off guard. but things still went the way he wanted to, because Dazai’s plan hadn’t been ruined, he only had a new variable to react to. same with Fyodor: he didn’t actually have everything specifically planned out. Nikolai and Sigma weren’t supposed to live, sure, and Nikolai wasn’t supposed to do what he did, but Fyodor effortlessly reacted to it: he had the vampire guards already in the prison as a means to the outside, and he called for or somehow otherwise got Chuuya for help, while Dazai reacted to Nikolai’s games by hijacking the control room using his own method of communication to the outside: the time travel ability user.
so, in short, Fyodor isn’t even really trusting that Fukuchi will go after what he wants, or that his plan is even perfect, but that Fyodor himself will be able to react to whatever is thrown at him.
and finally, other little notes:
- neither me or my friend had anything about the hand injury lol. but, my friend did say it trusts Asagiri to make a compelling narrative, and so do I, plus the anime infamously fucks up character details. so, it’s waiting for the manga to possibly explain it better.
- Dazai’s “ingenious plan” of Chuuya in a costume didn’t work because it was a brilliant plan. it worked because Chuuya and Mori agreed to go along with it, e.g. Dazai trusting in people to help him, while Fyodor simply cuts off everyone else’s options until the one he wants is the only accessible one. the Port Mafia had other options, they could have just as well told Dazai to go fuck himself and saved their own skin. but, Dazai knows Mori chooses the most optimal solutions, and he presented an optimal solution. out of a couple, probably, knowing Mori
- for redemption arcs, my friend points out they’re less redemption and more explanation. Fitzgerald was explained why he did what he did, but he was far from excused for what he did, and he isn’t a good guy at any point. he isn’t actively trying to destroy the city, but he isn’t helping the good guys without a deal that benefits him. and for Fyodor being a stereotypical villain, he’s treated very human - he’s bad at Japanese, he can’t use chopsticks, he complains even in serious situations. so, there’s less “redemption arcs” than there are Asagiri pointing out to us that this act of evil came from a gray area forced by circumstance and genuine feeling, argued to not even be their own “fault,” rather than simply wanting power or death. and as for Fyodor, he’s partially explained for that - as you said, exerting his own will in the name of God’s will. and there’s so many theories about what exactly Fyodor believes and what made him believe this - so, while Fyodor may not be explicitly explained, he has enough depth of character that we can at least theorize, so there is something there to work with.
- and with that, my friend points out that people don’t have to be alive to have information revealed about them. for Fyodor’s death, it might be cheap because they’re bringing him back. (my personal belief because it’s too short for a character like Fyodor, you’re right) but even if he isn’t brought back, they pointed out Sigma being supposedly dead and the story hasn’t circled back around to confirming that - a loose end. and Fyodor lore was dropped right before he died, plus the next villain is associated with Fukuchi, AND Bram and Nikolai are both loose ends - the DOA aren’t gone yet. whether alive or not, Fyodor is likely still going to play some part in the story.
anyway! I think that’s it? idk, that’s it for me lol I’ve been typing this for a solid 45 minutes. reiterating that I’m trying not to sound like I’m arguing 😭 just trying to neutrally discuss, if any of it comes off like I’m arguing.
and! because I know full well how starving the fyozai shippers are for fyozai that isn’t abusive or one-sided (😔😔😔), I do have some fyozai fics if you’d like my ao3. no pressure though, feel free to decline :D
edit: also as you said, there’s still story left to go, so I’m also keeping an open mind to explain further these points. like my friend, I also trust Asagiri to write a compelling narrative 😌
*hugs back*
hi! fellow fyozai enjoyer, I saw your post about fyozai and how you disliked the finale, and I have thoughts about how I actually loved the finale for fyozai (I mean this /lh, it’s fully my opinion)
the basis of it is what Dazai tells Fyodor, and a theory I saw around chapter 101-ish of the manga.
Dazai tells Fyodor: “you don’t trust anything you can’t manipulate”
and the theory I saw had it’s basis centered around the fact that Chuuya was a wildcard for both Dazai and Fyodor. now, chapter 101, the fandom’s assumptions were a) Chuuya is actually a vampire, and b) Dazai just tried to kill Chuuya via drowning
the theory basically said, SKK have a strong bond right? an extremely popular theory around that time was that Dazai was trying to drag Chuuya out of the vampirism via his speech, possibly coded, and the water and drowning. so the theory said that what if Dazai was trying to use their bond, and Chuuya’s own willpower, to drag Chuuya out of vampirism and have him be an element of surprise against Fyodor - e.g. Chuuya is pulled out, recognizes Dazai’s plan, and plays along to eventually betray Fyodor, being the closest to him physically, and because Fyodor is already convinced of his control of Chuuya.
essentially, Dazai relies on his bond with Chuuya, his ally and human nature, while Fyodor is so focused on control that he is caught off guard because of Chuuya’s willpower
which is what happens in canon, sort of - Dazai relies on his allies and human nature, while Fyodor is so certain of his plan (he says it himself- his plan is perfect) that he doesn’t question Chuuya’s vampirism. he is so convinced that the vampirism is absolute that why would he need to check?
and then Dazai wins. and he tells Fyodor, “you don’t trust anything you can’t manipulate”
Dazai doesn’t either, or he didn’t, and here’s where I love the ending so much and what it means for fyozai - neither of them trust what they can’t manipulate. but Dazai did, has been doing since he joined the Agency, and that’s how he won - he grew out of this belief that Fyodor still currently has, also aligning with their fundamental differences in one belief, the value of human life + experiences
anyway. that’s my opinion on why I actually love the ending sm and don’t understand why so many people hate it. “how did Fyodor not notice Chuuya put on a Halloween costume” that’s the POINT - it highlights fyozai’s fundamental difference in belief, Dazai’s growth, how Dazai has pushed past that blockage that Fyodor still has and which is why he lost, ALSO highlighting how they are the same person expressed differently in one root belief. which makes them even CRUNCHIER in my opinion
ty for reading, you’re so correct that not enough people enjoy fyozai 😔✌️(and if any of this came off harsh please know I don’t mean it to be 😭)
Hi, fellow fyozai enjoyer! Thank you for sharing your perspective on the finale! I love hearing other people's opinions, so I appreciate you throwing your two cents in. And no worries, none of that came off harsh. 😆 I'm about to rant here, so I hope I don't come off as harsh!
I think you're spot on in what Asagiri/the anime writers were going for. However, there are several fundamental problems I have with it, from a character perspective and from a storytelling perspective. My issues with the finale really don't have anything to do with fyozai; my issues are with the writing, especially the writing of Fyodor's character. Because the thing is, it makes sense in theory, but it doesn't work the way they did it.
In theory, it makes perfect sense that Dazai "won" because he trusts his allies and Fyodor does not. It's even set up in these scenes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the first, Dazai and Fyodor are (quite hilariously) telling each other how they manipulate others. Dazai acts the fool, pretends to be lazy and unengaged so his "workers" have to step up and do something themselves. That's how he plays puppet master behind the scenes. Fyodor takes control of his pawns by leaving them no choice. That's how he plays puppet master behind the scenes. Dazai's method requires a lot less control and a lot more trust.
In the second, Dazai is saying that the world is chaotic and all of their "ingenious plans" don't amount to much (except when it's Dazai's "ingenious plan" to dress Chuuya up in a Halloween costume!), challenging Fyodor's idea that he can impose his own order on the world (which is exactly what Fyodor is trying to do, though he can't see that - he isn't doing God's will, he's only doing his own; the order he is trying to impose upon the world by using the Book is not God's, it is his own).
Personally, I think "Dazai wins because he has friends, Fyodor loses because he doesn't" is kind of a boring way to go with both Fyodor's character and with the conflict between him and Dazai. Considering this is BSD, where everyone and their boss gets a redemption arc of some sort, and considering this a character based (however loosely) off of Fyodor Dostoevsky, a man who wrote numerous novels exploring deeply complex philosophical and religious ideas about human nature and redemption, I had hoped that Fyodor's character would have a redemption arc of his own. I really hoped that he wouldn't end up being the one character in this series treated like a stereotypical villain. Alas, here we are...
But whatever, they set this up, and again, theoretically, it makes sense. It works for their characters, and I don't mind the idea that Fyodor loses to Dazai because of Dazai's trust in others - in theory. You are certainly right that it makes fyozai all the crunchier!
But it just doesn't work the way they did it. It doesn't work because Fyodor does not actually have any direct control over the vampires.
Unless I missed something about there being a line on the Page that says "the vampires shall obey Fukuchi Ouchi, Bram Stoker, and Fyodor Dostoevsky, and no one else", Fyodor does not control the vampires. Fukuchi does, because Fukuchi has control of Bram. Or Fukuchi is supposed to, because Fukuchi is supposed to have control of Bram. The only reason the vampires would obey Fyodor at all is because, presumably (though I don't think this is ever stated), Fukuchi ordered them to through Bram and Bram's Ability.
This means that in order for Fyodor to use any of the vampires, including Chuuya, as his pawns, he would need to have complete trust in Fukuchi. He would need to trust that Fukuchi hasn't fucked anything up, has not lost control of Bram, and that whatever Dazai was plotting with his buddies outside the prison has not caught up to Fukuchi and exposed him or taken him down. And Fyodor knows that Dazai is plotting, he knows that Dazai is in contact with the outside. He knows Ranpo is out there, and that Dazai is relying in particular on Ranpo.
And he was able to predict Ranpo's moves at least up to trying to intercept the One Order. So he also knew that Fukuchi had been/would be discovered and that the ADA were actively trying to thwart him. But he carried on his plan to use Chuuya, because he still trusted that Fukuchi had control of Bram.
In other words, he was trusting Fukuchi in exactly the same way Dazai was trusting Ranpo and the others.
It doesn't matter if Fyodor and Fukuchi are "friends," or if they're real "allies" - the point is that Fyodor did not actually have any direct control over the vampires, or over Fukuchi. Fukuchi even says in the anime that he "sent him (Fyodor) to prison" to ensure that Fyodor could not interfere with his actual plan - which was, of course, not Fyodor's actual plan. But Fyodor trusted that things were still going according to his plan, even though he couldn't actually manipulate things directly from where he was. Exactly like Dazai.
I get the whole "Fyodor thinks his plan is perfect" thing, but in this plan, Fukuchi had all of the power over the vampires, not Fyodor. Sure, you can argue Fyodor thought he had Fukuchi under his thumb (which, by the way, I find very hard to believe, because from what Fukuchi tell Fukuzawa, Fyodor knew what Fukuchi really wanted, and made a deal with him to achieve that; therefore, he knew Fukuchi had his own motives), but that doesn't matter - what matters is that he placed control of the pawns he intended to use in the hands of someone else.
That ruins Dazai's whole "you don't trust anything you can't manipulate" - because he wasn't manipulating the vampires, and he couldn't manipulate Fukuchi from prison.
And he purposefully put himself in prison as part of his "perfect plan," so he intentionally put himself in a position where he could not directly manipulate his most important pawn: Fukuchi.
So the whole "Fyodor loses because he doesn't trust others" is bunk precisely because they used the vampires as the key to Fyodor's downfall. Fyodor literally cannot use the vampires as part of his plans without trusting an ally - Fukuchi. The idea behind Fyodor's downfall is fine. The execution is what doesn't make any goddamn sense.
It also doesn't work for me because this is Fyodor we're talking about here. Are you seriously telling me I should buy that Fyodor was fooled by contacts and fake fangs? Like for real? If it were anyone else, sure. But Fyodor? I wouldn't buy Dazai or Ranpo falling for that, either. I don't care how much Fyodor believes in his own perfect plan. He still should be able to tell the difference between someone who has been turned into a vampire and someone who has not. Especially since Dazai says he and Chuuya have pulled this kind of thing before. I'm expected to believe it never occurred to Fyodor they'd do something like that? Why, because he's not a soukoku shipper?
I wish we had gotten Dazai bringing Chuuya back to his senses through their bond, because that would make a whole hell of a lot more sense than this being an elaborate act - and it would actually give credence to the idea that Fyodor's desire for complete control is his undoing.
And while we're talking about the narrative problems, let's talk about that hand injury that's so important to all of this. I already talked about this in another post, but Fyodor deciding to let the vampires pilot the helicopter because his hand injury made it impossible for him to do so doesn't make sense to me, either, because the hand is clearly shown to still be mobile:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know there's a big difference between piloting a helicopter and pressing a button or letting someone else hold your hand, but the hand is obviously not useless. Why would Fyodor be willing to put himself at the mercy of his pawns if he can still use his hand, wounded or not? Again, when he's not actually the one controlling them?
Obviously, this isn't going to be a plot point in the manga because Fyodor has no hand injury in the manga, but this was another thing that bothered the hell out of me. They really just had Fyodor act stupid all of a sudden so he could get himself killed.
Again I hope I'm not sounding too harsh! I'm not trying to attack you at all!! But do you see why I have such a problem with the finale? I get what it was trying to do, but the way it was done just doesn't make any sense, imho. Now, if they had done something with Sigma and Fyodor, like I thought was going to be the case...
I do really appreciate your opinion on the finale, and I don't want to suggest you're wrong or anything. I'm just saying that to me, there are massive issues with it. I just think it's really bad writing.
More than that, it felt so cheap to kill Fyodor off that way. It didn't feel like a big deal, it just felt rushed and - well, cheap. Fukuchi's death has the same problem, but at least with Fukuchi they took the time to flesh out his character, give us answers to the remaining questions about his past and his motives, and give him an emotional send-off. They just blew Fyodor up and went, "Well on to the next!"
But!! With time to reflect, I think the people saying that Fyodor isn't really dead at all are probably right. There are just too many unanswered questions; it doesn't make narrative sense to actually kill him off at this point.
And we don't know how the manga is going to go yet. If the manga does follow the anime, I think it's a pretty good bet that when Sigma wakes up, the secrets he learned about Fyodor will be revealed, and then - well, I guess we'll see.
In the meantime, though, I'm going to continue to (mostly) pretend the finale didn't happen sdfghjghj
Again, thank you for sharing! 💕💖 I think you made some good points, but I hope I was able to explain why I disliked the finale so much :/

There's a Will; There's a Way (Book 4) Chapter Nineteen
Dazai Osamu x Fem! Reader
Chapter Nineteen: Burning End
Summary: Fyodor's game ends, and Fukuchi's begins.
Fyodor rage turned on Dazai.
"Aw, is Chuuya going soft?” said Dazai.
But he also knew her strength. (Y/N) had the will; she’d find the way.
l
(Y/N) landed before Fukuchi in a swirl of green light. She stood from her crouched position, gift still alive and ready for a fight as Fukuchi regarded her with surprise and a measure of expectance. He held his sword in one hand and One Order the radio in the other. (Y/N)’s eyes zeroed in on it immediately, and There’s a Will; There’s a Way hummed as it sensed the power radiating from One Order.

Tumblr media
CHUUYA SAN CHUUYA SANNNNDNFDMSBFKDJSHFJKDSHFLDJSK
ok this answers a lot of questions like: how did chuuya get infected in the first place when he's so strong, was he aware of what dazai was telling him etc. etc. and i dont think dazai told him to do any of this honestly
we have a lot more skk to go
but honestly how did everything end in 8 minutes? um.

side note i love your eyes nikolai
"I chose to make all of humanity a we" okay that defo sounds like the end of the world more than a world war does but let's hear him out
also um is poe seeing this
also watch the light symbolism
sldafhaksdjhfjks this really sounds like the end of the world i get it though it makes sense now the page is supposed to do that

i also can't come to terms with the fact that fyodor is... dead? huh? just last ep dazai was dead now fyodor idk what to believe anymore and i'm sure that's the purpose of having the contrast..
but is fyodor really not able to control the happenings of the world idk there are too many openings

BREAKUP HAPPENING AT SUNSET!!
Tumblr media
TERUKO DSJKFHDJKSLFHDSJKFHSLJKFHS DHSJFLKJSHFLJKDSHFJKLDHSFJKLHDLSFKJHDSJKLFS
i have no words
i thought fukuzawa was gonna not kill him and theres KJFHDKLSJHFJLSDK
okay not sure if people are blaming teruko but it's a fact that she has to be the one to do this i think more than anyone else
lets not forget that my fav has died at the hands of this man
and that teruko does also have a bond and a story with fukuchi so
double breakup i guess
Tumblr media
...not the oda dazai parallels no.... i've only ever thought of this as a possible fuku mori plot but ;-;;;
i think it's important to the story that he wasn't beheaded but pierced through the heart because it was the way he killed off the prev characters as well
um. return jouno.
but also look at this scene is oda dazai + one teruko is such an interesting character
AM I SUPPOSED TO FEEL SAD cuz i don't (f the UN scene is)
OKAY NOW I DO
Tumblr media
this shot makes the breakup sadder
fukuzawa looks 50 years older...
