I think a lot of Asagiri’s faults when writing may come from the fact that he (admittedly) writes what his fans want to see. I mean, we see that with Chuuya who was intended to barely even be an important character but has now had multiple series featuring and starring him. Or how he says he wishes he could write more about Kunikida and Dazai rather than the obvious pairing we keep getting over and over again. It makes it so characters the fandom like and make content of become the cool important ones, rather than the ones initially intended to be focused on, and I feel it siphons content from other characters. I think we can see this most in literally any female character in bsd, who don’t get literally any hype outside of a niche audience because (and I hate to say it) but most of the bsd fandom focuses entirely on male characters. And a select few at that. I think that became clear to me when Ueda got introduced and everyone and their mother was putting them in maid outfits and making fanart that same day, when Agatha was hardly loved besides the few people I know on Pinterest and tumblr who love her dearly. Or higuchi, who has the potential for a storyline about her, her backstory, her unknown ability, her sister, but nobody ever seems to care about her so asagiri doesn’t write about her outside of what he’s done so far. I think higuchi deserves the Tachihara treatment where she becomes super important for a whole season and everything’s about her.

#the way kunidazai were literally set up to be the partners #and then literally vanished #the point about women in bsd is so valid #looking at Yosano who doesn't even exist anymore in the main plot for mysterious reasons #there is zero explanation for her disappearance #sensei basically admitted the producers pushed him to write more of the fan favs #really makes me wonder how different the story would have been if he had complete freedom #and didn't care about popular demand #honestly for that reason I really respect the fairy tail mangaka #he knew veery well how popular the main ships in the show were #but he stuck to the og themes of friendship and family till the end #I wish bsd hadn't been so caught up in fan favs

shout out to light novel kunikida holy shit

the 3 episodes of the azure messenger prologue arc that we get as an anime do such a disservice compared to the book, where we get SO MUCH MORE background details and worldbuilding PLUS kunikida lore

wdym kunikida, at the point of the light novel, is *still* teaching algebra part-time alongside being a detective?!

wdym that kunikida (from the first person pov and chatty narrative voice) literally has a running dialogue of how much dazai sucks throughout the book?! and wdym it's juxtaposed with the most gorgeous and whimsy descriptions of yokohama urban life

im honestly not done talking about the light novel but it's 1am and I just finished binge-reading it so im going to sign off for the night...

TL;DR: the light novel was so good, lore-wise, and was such a win for both the kunikida fans and dazai fans

Kunikida is so under traumatised by the fandom.

You get a character who cares so much that it physically hurts him. That wants to see people live at the cost of his own life.

Because he can’t bare the thought of failing someone else who’s right in front of him.

Someone who dedicates his ability, his worth and his sense of self to saving others. The Agency are his ideals and he doesn’t care if he dies because his ideals will live on with them.

That man is so primed for a tragic, traumatic backstory and yet people keep trying to insist he’s the well adjusted one.

#a kid literally exploded before his eyes #as if that isn't enough trauma for a lifetime #everytime someone says Kunikida's trauma is math teacher an angel loses its wings #it makes me so mad when his pain is ignored #his grief is so rooted in reality how terrible things happen and sometimes you just can't do anything about it #just try to live your life around it and try to do what you can do #that's literally what his ideals state #sorry for the word vomit #but it needed to be said #Kunikida
