“MOMMY!” your little voice mustered up all the noice it could make “MAMA!” Natasha came running to your bedroom, hearing her daughters screams. “Y/n baby?” She called. She threw open the door and her 5 year old came crashing into her arms. “MOMMY!” You continued to cry. “Mommy’s here baby, what’s wrong?” She said as she lifted you up in her embrace. “Can you tell mommy what’s wrong?” You pointed over to your bed and Natasha walked over to investigate. She pulled back the duvet to find the remains of your dinner that you had just thrown up.

“‘M sorry mama” you hiccuped as you clutched onto your mommy’s sweatshirt. Your tummy flipping and tumbling all around. “Oh sweetheart it’s ok, you don’t have to be sorry y/n/n. Are you sick tiny dancer?” You nodded and pointed to your stomach “tum tum all icky” your tear stained cheeks broke Natasha’s heart, how had she not noticed you had gotten sick. Granted, your energy had dropped the last 24 hours but Natasha just put it down to you not sleeping right. Come to think of it, maybe you weren’t sleeping right because you were sick.

“Let’s get you some medicine, yeah baby girl?” You burrowed into your mamas neck and shook your head “taste gross” you whined. “I know sweetheart but it’ll make you feel better I promise, come on baby” Natasha said as she carried you into the main bathroom of your mini apartment Tony had designed on a lower floor of the tower. She grabbed the medicine and headed to the kitchen to make a glass of water and a hot water bottle. “Ewy ewy!” You complained as you swallowed the medicine. “I know y/n/n. Here have some more water to get rid of the taste”

After wrapping the hot water bottle in a thick tea towel to avoid you getting hurt, Natasha brought you both to the couch and swaddled you up in her arms. She rocked you gently with the hot water bottle resting on your tummy. She hummed a soft tune as she wiped away your stray tears. “Widow bear mommy” you whispered. “You want Widow bear? Shall we go and get her?” You spoke a quiet ‘yes’ and Natasha scooped you up of the couch and headed back to your bedroom. You made little grabby hands out to widow bear, a light brown teddy bear dressed in a black widow suit - your mommy gave her to you the day you were born.

“You ready to go back to sleep beautiful?” You had called for your mommy at 2am, it was now 4am, Natasha suspected you would be doing lots of sleeping until you were better, you looked exhausted. “You can come sleep in mama’s, I’ll get yours cleaned up in the morning” you loved sleeping in mommy’s bed, as proved by your sleepy “yay” Natasha sadly laughed at your adorable yet sick state, she grabbed your paci and carried you to her bedroom. As soon as she set you down on the bed you crawled right up to her side, inhaling the scent of your mama on the pillow.

Natasha climbed in on the other side and smothered you in a tight cuddle. “How does your tummy feel now baby?” She asked. “Still icky but less than before” you mumbled out, eyes already closed. “Get some rest y/n, you’ll feel better soon I promise” Natasha said as she reached over to turn of one of the nightlights (you still needed at least one on) “I love you mommy” you spoke as you drifted off into dream land. “I love you more” was the last thing you heard from your mama as you fell asleep.

The next day you were much worse. You refused to eat and spent more than 3 hours over the toilet. Natasha took you to see Bruce at the first chance, you had been crying all morning and Natasha knew this was more than just a tummy bug. “It looks like the flu” Bruce diagnosed. “It’s most likely to get worse today and tomorrow but after that the symptoms should start to clear up” Natasha’s heart was shattered, you’d had the occasional coughs and colds but never the flu and she knew you felt terrible. She was devastated you would have to go through this for even longer.

When you were finally asleep, Natasha called Fury who immediately gave her all the time she needed to be with you. She spent the next three days by your side every second of every minute. She made you your favourite dino nuggets when you had more of an appetite. She sang you sweet lullaby’s while you were curled up in her arms with widow bear. Together you watched every barbie film imaginable and spent endless hours in the bathroom. You couldn’t wait to get better, but you were so happy to have your mommy with you through all of it.

As a follow-up to my rant about mRNA vaccines, there's a question I get a lot about acellular and mRNA type vaccines:

"If there's no virus in there, why did the COVID shot make me sick as a dog the next day??"

Because viruses generally aren't what makes you feel sick.

Your immune system is.

Few viral infections, on their own, give you a fever, joint aches, and a stuffy nose. If you had no immune system, a virus could kill you without producing most of the signs and symptoms we associate with viral illness.

Those things you have with a flu are the direct result of your immune system fighting back.

Lots of microorganisms are vulnerable to temperature fluctuations. Fever is your body trying to cook the germs.

Inflammation is a concentration of immune cells at a given location doing their job. Lots of them go to where the infection is, which makes tissues puffy and painful.

Cough, congestion, and nausea are your body trying to flush out attacking organisms by removing them from your airways and digestive system. If it can get rid of them before they get into your cells, that's half the battle.

Which means that you don't actually need to have an infectious illness to feel like you have a cold or flu.

Your immune system just needs to THINK you do.

Vaccines trick your body into fighting an intruder that isn't actually a threat, much like allergies do. Your immune system throws everything it's got at the vaccine material, and creates antibodies against future infections from the same attacker.

So when you actually get COVID, or measles, or seasonal influenza, it'll be ready.

That immune response that makes you feel like dirt the day after your COVID shot is actually a good sign, because it tells us your immune system bought the ruse and treated it like an actual disease.

MC rushes to BS to look for Kiro. Since Helios is there, it is revealed that “Kiro” is simply Anole disguising himself using Evol. The concert was also organised by Anole

MC learns from Helios that the evolution accelerator had already existed 17 years ago. However, it’s unable to operate without the QUEEN gene. Because MC’s Evol has been obtained, the accelerator is able to function

Anole flees in defeat, and Kiro performs on stage

A kidnapper from Trio-Stars pretends to be a writer from “Entertainment Weekly”, drawing MC away from the concert venue. MC is knocked unconscious and brought away by the kidnappers

From the conversation between the kidnappers, MC discovers that she was mistaken to be a chemist of devo serum (i.e. Black Queen)

Shaw appears and saves MC

As a condition to participate in this matter, MC has to assist Shaw in completing a mysterious transaction in Agio Street. The buyer is willing to pay handsomely for the devo serum and the chemist who formulated it, and the seller is a local gang that had been established in Agio Street for many years - Trio-Stars

Shaw disguises himself as an informant from the Trio-Stars, and MC disguises herself as a drug manufacturer

In a bar in Agio Street, MC bumps into members from the Trio-Stars who are looking for MC. Shaw joins in the scuffle, and the two of them flee

MC ends up at a fortune teller’s, and finds the medium very familiar

The medium is actually Black Queen, and Cyril is there too

To continue the investigation, MC pretends to be an informant for the Trio-Stars and heads to the location for the mysterious transaction. She meets the “buyer” - Victor

The boss of Trio-Stars exposes MC’s disguise. Fortunately, MC and Victor work together and manage to escape

MC learns from Victor that the devo serum might be related to her loss of Evol

In the Ultima Bioresearch Centre, Lucien’s research on the devo serum shows that it is unrelated to MC’s genes. While her genes have a stabilising effect, it doesn’t have the ability to cause Evol devolution

Kidnapping Incident at Twin Leaves Orphanage (Dr Song). Lucien and MC rush to the scene

The head of the orphanage steps out to explain that the missing kids were actually playing hide-and-seek, and they weren’t kidnapped. Dr Song, who has lost her Evol, is taken away by the STF

From the kids, MC learns that “MC” (i.e. Black Queen) had invited the kids to a game of hide-and-seek

MC and Lucien meet Artemis at the bridge, and she forces MC to hand over what Dr Song gave to her. Lucien uses space folding to send MC away

Along the way home, MC bumps into Gavin, who is investigating a murder in Agio Street. The victim is an Evolver, but the autopsy report showed that the victim no longer had Evol

MC and Gavin discover that the victim used to be an equipment caretaker in Loveland High, and they head over to investigate

In Loveland High, there’s a sudden earthquake. MC is responsible for evacuating people who are still in in the building, and meets Eli who is leading the Special Operations Team in a mission to apprehend an Evol criminal. In fact, Eli’s true motive is to find Gavin (and to retrieve the experiment report for the accelerator)

Gavin and Eli engage in a fight. In the end, Eli leaves a weakened Gavin trapped in a classroom. The building collapses, and Gavin manages to push MC outside the building

While searching for Gavin, a second collapse occurs. MC enters a time subway created by Cyril

Gavin manages to escape from the building

Based on MC’s consciousness, Cyril created his final work - the time subway

MC boards the time subway and sees the experiences she shared with the four male leads as the subway travels forward. She also “meets” the four male leads during their younger days

MC starts running in the opposite direction of the subway in order to break free from this cycle. The time subway becomes a gift from MC to Cyril - he has always craved for a perfect world

After leaving the time subway, MC awakes in the hospital and is told that she had fainted along the street. Cyril bids her farewell

At the convenience store, MC meets a youngster who escaped from the Observation Centre. The other escapees are attempting to search for a place which can give them the devo serum. MC claims to be an Evolver who escaped from the Observation Centre, causing the escapees to accept her into the group. She boards a truck with them

MC gets a premonition of the youngster’s future, and realises that her Evol has returned

While on the bridge, the truck meets with an accident. In order to stop another sedan from tumbling into the ocean, a middle-aged man in the truck uses his Evol, revealing his identity as an Evolver

Because of the Evol energy waves, STF captures the escapees, resulting in a brawl between the two sides

One of the Evolvers loses control of his Evol, and accidentally sends a bullet and car flying towards MC

Victor appears and stops time, rescuing MC. However, he collapses because he interfered with the laws of nature

MC reveals the truth of how Evolvers in the Observation Centre were being used as experimental subjects for the evolution accelerator

Gavin leads the NW squad to investigate, and announces that he will take responsibility for everything that happened in the Observation Centre

After locating the evolution accelerator, he sends the coordinates to Helios, who heads over to destroy it

MC and the four male leads successfully resolve this incident in their split routes. Unfortunately, Leto escapes

MC receives a text from Shaw, who tells her to bring her father’s notebook to Twin Leaves Orphanage

Upon waking up, Black Queen and Anole have also appeared in the dilapidated building. They have not only taken away the notebook, but have also ended Leto’s life. The black box is also broken

Victor and Zero return to the Space and Time Administration to fix his Evol

[ VOLUME 9: Ch 35 - 36 ]

With a recent spate of unnatural disasters occurring in Loveland City, a Relief Centre is built to house Evolvers who are discriminated by society and have nowhere else to go

MC chances on Shaw in an alley, who is severely wounded due to an overuse of Evol. She sends him to the hospital

Before he loses consciousness, Shaw returns her the notebook (belonging to her father) that Black Queen took away from her

In the hospital corridor, a youth hands a black card to MC and tells her to head to the address written on it in order to get rid of her Evol

MC learns from Shaw that these black cards were specially made by Black Queen, and they contain Evol which can influence their consciousness. Whoever touches the cards will think that Evolvers are the prime reason for the unnatural disasters, and that only by getting rid of Evol can the disasters be stopped. Shaw’s Evol has also been damaged by Black Queen

MC also learns that Black Queen’s Evol is the ability to cause a deterioration of Evol. The more she deteriorates Evol, the more powerful she becomes

When MC asks Shaw about which side he’s on, Shaw expresses that he is someone who walks among history, and hence does not belong to any side. He simply wants to find the truth, and push for the truth to be discovered

MC and Minor pretend to be siblings and head to the address stated on the card. They bump into Gavin, who is there to investigate

Under the guise of wanting to get rid of their Evol, MC and Gavin search for Black Queen. In the process, they are pulled into a strange dimension behind the North District Waterfall. MC realises that her pretence of being siblings with Minor was discovered early on

Gavin uses his Evol to destroy this strange dimension, and they leave it together

Gavin tells MC that there are many spots in Loveland City where Evol can be removed. Through the strange dimension of the North District Waterfall, Black Queen has been able to create even more of such spots

Lucien takes MC to a space where MC can see where Black Queen is, but not the other way round

MC witnesses Black Queen failing to use her devolution ability. Lucien tells MC that as long as MC’s strength grows, Black Queen’s strength will weaken, and she may even become powerless

The reason why Black Queen still exists is because MC left out one world line while consolidating them. Black Queen is urgently harnessing power to destroy MC in order to bring these two world lines together

There’s a sudden uproar at the Relief Centre, and Lucien uses his new Evol to calm everyone down

Shaw tells MC that Black Queen intends to become the world’s true QUEEN the next day

Victor returns to Loveland City from the Space and Time Administration

During Black Queen’s coronation ceremony, Kiro uses his Evol to command Black Queen to return the strength she stole

Black Queen seizes an opportunity to escape. MC looks for Black Queen and they engage in a final battle

MC falls into Black Queen’s trap, and the latter absorbs a large amount of Evol

Victor suddenly appears. Through turning back time, MC regains the Evol she had lost

By the time TK finally gets home - three hours after his boyfriend, and an hour later than planned, thanks to a very uncooperative patient on their last call - Carlos is stood in the kitchen, chopping vegetables for their dinner.

"Hey babe," TK calls, his keys clinking as they land in the bowl by the door. "How's it going?"

Carlos sighs and shakes his head. "We're out of onions, and some of the spices have gone off," He says, his voice hoarse, and TK wonders if the flu that's been spreading around town has finally caught up with them. "But I really don't have the energy to worry about that, so I'm doing stir fry instead."

"Sounds good to me." TK kicks his shoes off by the stairs and wanders over, wrapping Carlos in a hug from behind. "Anything you want me to do?"

"No, I'm good."

Carlos carries on his work, the movements small and slow and precise, so TK kisses his shoulder and heads over to the stove. The kettle is half full, and TK puts it on to boil then gets two mugs out of the cupboard. "I know you hate it, but it sounds like you need one of my dad's herbal teas for that throat."

The sound of chopping stops suddenly, and TK frowns as he turns back to Carlos. "Are you okay there?"

"Uh, yeah." Carlos rests the knife down, his hands starting to shake. "TK, there's something we should talk about."

"Okay." TK steps forward, resting his hand on Carlos' back. "What is it, babe?"

Carlos turns to look at him, tears gathering in those big brown eyes, and TK's chest seizes up.

A broad stripe of purple covers Carlos' neck, just below his Adam's apple, the mottled texture suggesting the bruise is still coming out. There's no obvious swelling, TK notes as the paramedic training kicks in, making him assess the situation like he's on a call. But the size and placement of the mark makes TK worry, because the swelling could all be internal.

"Fuck, Carlos - what happened?" TK says, his own voice as soft as Carlos', when he reaches out to stroke Carlos' cheek. "Who did this to you?"

"A suspect I chased today." Carlos closes his eyes and leans into the touch, gently nuzzling TK's hand. "I had him pinned but I got distracted, and suddenly he'd got me in a chokehold, threatening to kill me if Mitchell didn't let the two of them walk off with the stolen goods."

TK curses under his breath. "How'd that go down?"

A bright glint of happiness shines through the distress in Carlos' eyes as he looks at TK. "I thought of you, and it made me strong enough to jam my elbow in the guy's gut. He let go of me when he had to catch his breath."

They stare at each other, smiling softly until the kettles whistles and ruins the moment.

"Hang on, let me-" TK pulls away, grabbing a potholder so he can lift the kettle off the heat. "And did you get all that checked out? Is there any chance of swelling, or other complications?"

"Yeah, I went to the hospital. They kept me for a few hours, did a couple of scans, and it's all good. Just sore - although the bruising may take 24 hours to fully develop." Carlos rubs his eyes with the back of his hand. "They said something about cream for it, but there was so much going on, I don't really remember it all."

"That's okay - I know what they mean." TK presses a kiss to Carlos' cheek and dashes up to the bathroom for the cream. "It's called arnica - it's a natural thing, it helps to heal bruises," He explains, as he heads back down the stairs. "I'm not gonna lie, it'll hurt as I rub it in. But it should stop that from getting any worse, and cut the recovery time down from weeks to days."

Carlos is at the stove, gathering all the ingredients for the stir fry and heating the pan, and TK gently tugs him away. "Okay, leave that. You should rest on the couch, and I'll cook us dinner tonight."

"You, cook?" Carlos reluctantly lets go of the soy sauce and follows TK to the couch. "I'd better have 911 on speed dial."

"Hey, I can cook! I had my own apartment in New York and cooked myself meals all the time." TK pushes Carlos down on the couch and straddles his lap, pinning his patient in position. "But you have done the chopping, which is good. I swear most knives are made for right handed people - they never work properly when I use them."

Carlos chuckles as TK gets the cream ready. "I'm pretty sure knives are universal, unless they have weird han-ow!" Carlos winces, his eyes screwed shut, when TK's fingers touch his bruised skin. "Are you-ow! Are you sure this is gonna help?"

Despite his protests, Carlos stays still and silent after that, letting TK concentrate as he applies the cream to the bruise and the area around it.

"Yes, I am sure," TK says, once he's finished, to answer Carlos' question. "I use this stuff all the time. We get bumped and knocked about during pretty much every shift at work, and this gets rid of them quickly."

"Oh. I thought it was just one of your dad's crazy mother nature things."

TK laughs, because his dad does have a lot of weird natural remedies for almost everything, and most of them don't work. "No, trust me. This one is real."

"In that case..." Carlos grabs the hem of his shirt, and TK gives him a knowing smirk. "I have another bruise, dipshit. Please can you use your amazing medical superpowers on that one too?"

They stand up and rearrange themselves, so Carlos can get his shirt off and TK can see the bruise properly. This one is huge, and spreads across Carlos' shoulder towards his spine and almost down to his elbow on the back of his arm, and TK winces in sympathy. "Yeah, this - this will not be fun."

TK works faster this time, keen to get it over and done with, and finishes with a kiss to the back of Carlos' neck. "There we go, babe," He says, as he helps Carlos stand up and passes over his shirt. "All better."

Carlos smiles, a little shakier than usual, and gives TK a soft peck on the lips. "My hero."

1. What does Ian’s bedroom look like?

Contained chaos. Poorly contained chaos.

He’s got a bed, a desk, a dresser, and an end table. The desk is the tidiest: the papers on it are stacked haphazardly, there might be a pen or pencil or two lying on it but most are in the drawer, and if something that doesn’t belong gets set on it there’s at least a chance it’ll get moved by the end of the week.

The dresser is mostly for stacking stuff on top of, and storing clothes he no longer wears but hasn’t gotten rid of yet. There’s usually a jacket or a shirt or some more awkward piece of clothing hanging off one of the knobs. 

The bedside table has his phone, its charger, and a variety of junk -- mail he brought to the bedroom to read, a comb he forgot to take back to the bathroom, a half-full (or half-empty) glass of water, a pair of socks he picked up to wear then forgot about, a single slipper set there while he was looking for its mate, etc.

There's sheets on his bed, plus a blanket if it's been cold lately, but if the corners of the fitted sheet are all pulled over the mattress, then it is tidier than usual. Whatever he’s wearing for night clothes at the moment, if he’s even bothering, will be anywhere from near the pillows (he has two very flat pillows that are usually in pillowcases) to hanging off the foot. The sheets, it’s worth noting, often have cartoon characters on them.

The floor is hidden under a layer of clothes, towels, shoes, blankets, boxes, sheets, books, etc. About the only things you won't find on the floor are plates or food-related items, anything that will attract bugs, as well as loose papers since those pose a falling hazard (everything else just makes him stumble). 

4. What would Angela do if she needed to make dinner but the kitchen was busy?

If there’s something near to hand that doesn’t require the kitchen, she’d have that, but most likely she’d wait until it was available. She doesn’t particularly like or dislike cooking, but she does not like fast food, and she’s patient.

5. Christopher’s cleanliness habits (personal, workspace, etc.)

There are places he cares about cleanliness, and there are places he does not.

Most of his living quarters, particularly the kitchen, are spotless. Dishes get washed and the table and counters wiped down immediately after eating. Clothes get folded or hung as soon as they’re dry, and dirty ones go straight in the hamper. Making the bed happens almost as soon as he gets out of it.

Christopher’s work areas, on the other hand, are disaster zones. Anything that might provide some inspiration, or is part of that thing from two months ago he’s still working on, or was used for that other thing two years ago he wants to revisit, ends up on a desk or a table or lying on the floor somewhere, and isn’t getting put away until he’s done with it. No one is permitted to touch anything -- he knows exactly where everything is (which is true, and he can prove it too), and it’s all part of his own particular organizational system (which is … less true; there’s some organizing going on, but it’s less of a system and more of a feeling), so leave it where it is.

His personal hygiene is hit-or-miss. Brushing teeth, usually a hit; showering, often a miss, unless he’s performing soon.

7. Ash’s favorite way to waste time and feelings surrounding wasting time

It isn’t necessary to schedule every hour of your day, but even after a few years of regular contact with Lanzo, Ash still does not have what Lanzo considers a proper appreciation for the value of lazing around.

That said, for years Ash has found it difficult to ignore the allure of a summer afternoon nap; particularly when it’s raining outside, he’s just had a mug of relaxing lavender tea, there’s a soft blanket and the entire couch is free to stretch out on … zzzz.

8. Lauren’s favorite indulgence and feelings surrounding indulging

If she’s had a really rough week, the first chance she gets, she’s having a hot bath, followed by a bowl of cinnamon ice cream while watching either a screwball comedy or a tragic romance, whichever she feels like.

Lauren’s got a fair amount of good old-fashioned Catholic guilt, but it’s heavily concentrated in certain areas and almost never touches other things. Some things she’s overindulged in and never felt guilty about, other relatively harmless things have kept her awake at night for hours. The above scenario usually doesn’t make her feel bad.

11. Julie’s intellectual pursuits

Julie is -- well, was, post-Allwinter -- attending college, for what would probably end up being a degree in History, but she likes reading about all kinds of different things. Mostly psychology and philosophy, but also about other cultures, geography, and nature, specifically trees and plants. She’s one of those jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none types, only more with knowledge than skills.

Science-fiction or fantasy. A slight preference for the former, as she’s found it easier to find sci-fi graphic novels. 

With her dyslexia, Reagan doesn’t read much, so anything that is easily read, and more importantly easily visualized, is her favorite, regardless of genre.

Biggest: Survive high school. In the third-largest city in the country. Where she knows no one. No problem! (said with major sarcasm)

Customizable!

From a young age, Knife’s mostly gotten plain t-shirts and jean jackets that she could decorate herself, with fabric markers or felt patches or (for a very brief period in middle school) bedazzle. It was one of the few things she could keep doing after the accident, which changed it from just a hobby to a representation of her independence and self-image, and therefore practically sacred. Not that everything she wears is customized, just most of it. She’s also familiar with sewing basics, not enough to make her own clothes from scratch, but she can modify them.

As far as “rituals”, it is important to her to display something she’s decorated or modified the first time she wears it. She’s not looking for praise or even acceptance really, just acknowledgement.

Chocolate milk. She also drinks a lot of Sunny D.

Ideas for new articles. Sometimes ones she could reasonably write for work, others are something she might want to work on independently in the future, and still others are too niche or weird for publishing anywhere but are just fun to think about.

When Q was very little, he was more prone to catching any bugs that were getting passed around him. As he’s gotten older, that’s become less of a problem, but he’s got a 50/50 chance of getting the flu in a given year. 

Once he was old enough to go to boarding school, and therefore came under the jurisdiction of his aunt and uncle, if he so much as sneezed or coughed suspiciously, that was grounds for him taking the day off school and spending it in his room instead, with a steady supply of fluids and soups, regular check-ups by staff, and a nurse if his temperature climbed a degree too high. 

On the one hand, it was great to get out of school, and probably prevented him from getting sicker in at least a few cases, as he didn’t get exposed to more germs while his immune system was already busy. On the other, it didn’t take him too many years to realize this was his aunt and uncle’s way of protecting an asset rather than any kind of familial concern for his health, which kind of ruined it as relaxation. 

Honestly, the worst thing about it (from Q’s perspective) is how very Rich Kid™ that was, and how much of an effect it had on him. The first few times he got sick as an adult on his own in LA were not pretty.

22. Nate, given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen?

Doodles or little comics, poking fun at people who annoy or aggravate him but he isn't willing or able to confront. 

23. How organized is Niner? How does this organization/disorganization manifest in her everyday life?

From a certain perspective, Niner is very organized: she organizes everything into two categories, stuff she cares about and stuff she doesn’t. She keeps the two things very separate in her day-to-day life. Stuff she doesn’t care about gets ignored, left alone, or explicitly dismissed, while the stuff she cares about gets her full attention -- at least for a little while.

24. Is there one subject of study that Kayla excels at? Or does she even care about intellectual pursuits at all?

Kayla values intellectual pursuits, but they’re not of particular interest to her, generally speaking. She’s mostly interested in keeping the house clean, helping Hannah grow up healthy and happy, and just figuring out all the various aspects of being alive.

26. Does Jerome have any plans for the future? Any contingency plans if things don’t work out?

Pre-Allwinter, Jerome’s future plans mostly had to do with Hannah’s future (health, college, career, etc.) and eventually retirement. He and Kayla hoped to adopt at some point, since she couldn’t have kids herself, but at the time it wasn’t something they were directing energy toward. None of those plans were hard-and-fast, so they didn’t really require contingency plans.

Now, he has even fewer plans, as just figuring out how things work in the Allwinter and adjusting to it is a full-time occupation. He has an excellent support network now, so even if he does make plans that don’t work out, he’s pretty sure he’s in a good place.

31. Meaghan’s most prized possession

Her lightsaber. Not just because of its usefulness, but because how much it represents everything that’s happened since her exile and return to the Order. It’s different from her first one, in its materials, construction, and design, and shows how much she’s changed and grown. 

Also, it’s a fricking lightsaber. Not even Meaghan is immune to the awesomeness that is a fricking lightsaber.

32. Elarin’s thoughts on material possessions in general

Unlike Meaghan, Elarin followed the Jedi regulations on owning possessions because she had to, and because she didn’t have many opportunities to violate it, not because she believed in it. She hasn’t acquired many things herself, but while she understands the dangers of greed and the potential to get buried by one’s things, she thinks getting hung up on how many possessions someone has is missing the forest for the trees, or whatever the Star Wars equivalent idiom is.

35. What activities does Aidan enjoy, but consider to be a waste of time?

Meticulous fan wikis that document how many times a character shows up, or how many times a character in a 1,000-issue manga eats this particular flavor of ramen, or document every slang term used in a sci-fi series. It’s fascinating to read or think about documenting, but really Mac, don’t you have anything better to do with your time?

37. Is Darcy more analytical or more emotional in his decision-making?

He is much more analytical than emotional. Not quite as analytical or as immune to emotion as he thinks, but still very analytical.

38. Would Leah consider herself a Type A or Type B personality?

Still Type B, though that defined her better pre-War. 

39. What recharges Neal when he’s feeling drained?

Anything that can either be done alone, or in a group setting where talking isn’t expected, but keeps him occupied enough that his thoughts don’t overwhelm him. For Neal, painting, playing the drums or guitar, surfing, or sculpting fit that bill. The last two more than the former.

42. Elise’s hobbies

Tennis is the main one. She and an old friend from high school get together every so often for a game, and she’s taught Julie to play. She also jogs on occasion.

Elise isn’t as in to knitting or crocheting as other people she knows, but it’s something to do with her hands when she’s watching something: usually baseball, as she is a loyal New York Yankees fan.

If she has a few hours of downtime, she’s a fan of old-school Mario games and in particular speedrunning, without using glitches or cheats. She’s got a very respectable time.

43. How far did Lanzo get in formal education? What are his views on formal education vs self-education?

A brief Google search tells me little about education for medieval German nobility, but for Lanzo i imagine it involved a Latin grammar school (probably through a local church) and university. He was not a particularly diligent student at the time, and if there was some way for him to stay at home with a tutor instead, he would have taken it.

Formal education has its merits, but Lanzo is absolutely in favor of delaying college or skipping it entirely if you like. He's supportive of the idea of self-education, but from his perspective, how your life turns out is at least as dependent on luck as anything deliberate. He does recommend learning rudimentary finance stuff and something that will reliably give you work, however (if you can’t marry someone loaded).

46. Does Connie express his thoughts through words or deeds?

It takes him time to express anything, as he wants to think it through from beginning to end before he’s comfortable sharing them, but words, mostly. Not that he’s unwilling to follow through with actions.

48. How does Avery express love?

In love language terms, Gift Giving and Acts of Service (in game mechanics terms, giving gifts and helping out with personal side missions). For those she really cares about, she’ll make the effort to spend time with them even when they’re not doing anything interesting, but she’s a busy, active woman who gets distracted easily, so that’s less common.

Email From My Parents’ Former Chiropractor, a Medical Review

I had to read that and now so do you. But guess what? I also get to tear it apart line by line with extreme prejudice. And not the bad kind. At. All. 

This went out to probably close to a thousand people.

People will die because of this email.

“We have been keeping up with the true data from the CDC and WHO that is giving very accurate information on this virus.“

I’m relatively neutral on this. The CDC and WHO are probably some of the most official sources. They’re a little behind (1-2 days for WHO, and both only update every 24 hours), but overall no one would fault him for citing them as sources. Here’s the source I’ve been using.

My biggest problem with that beginning is that the sentence structure is... alarmingly presidential.

“First, this is not a new virus. It's been known to cause respiratory problems since the 1960's.”

The group of viruses called “coronavirus” have been identified since 1965. But there are hundreds of unique viruses in this group, and 7 of them infect humans at very different severities. The most recent one, identified in December 2019 and now named SARS-CoV-2, is definitely a coronavirus, but it’s also definitely not one we’ve seen before.

“So far, the new coronavirus has led to more than 100,000 illnesses and more than 3,000 deaths worldwide.”

I mean, he’s technically right that it’s “more than” 100,000 cases. But this email went out today, when confirmed cases were a lot closer to 784,400 and deaths were 37,780 (see source above). Even the WHO numbers today are 693,224 and 33,106 respectively. So my best guess is he was writing this on March 7th (per WHO sitreps) and didn’t bother to update it before sending it out March 30th.

“In the U.S. alone, the flu has caused an estimated 34 million illnesses, 350,000 hospitalizations and 20,000 deaths this season... Per the CDC data, the flu virus as far more contagious and deadlier.”

This info is also substantially out of date. Currently, these numbers are 38 mil, 400,000, and 24,000 respectively.

I have to say, I did fall for the corona vs flu false equivalency once upon a time, but I’ve learned and grown a lot since then. We’re prepared for the number of hospital beds we need for (seasonal-not-pandemic) flu. We know how fast spreads and we have a vaccine that offers at least partial protection from it. We have widespread testing for it. We’re relatively comfortable with it’s severity and mortality rate.

But you heard it here last: with the data we have right now, none of those things apply to covid-19. We don’t have the beds, ventilators, or PPE to take all of it’s excessive illness on, which leads to higher mortality rates. It's more contagious than flu (infecting 2-2.5 people per infected person, vs seasonal flu’s 1.3). We don’t have a vaccine or significant natural immunity. We don’t have adequate testing, so we don’t know enough to know if anything we do know is close to correct. All of that makes it much, much worse than seasonal flu despite numbers.

“What to do? First, all patients are responsible for their own immune system.”

I mean, sure, okay, you have the responsibility to make the best choices you can for you in the situation that you’re in. That’s fair. And generally people do. But saying you’re responsible for your own immune system seems to imply that if you get covid-19, it’s your own dang fault because you weren’t responsible enough?

If that stresses you out, rest easy in that you don’t control nearly as much of your health status (look up the Whitehall Studies) and immune status (look up the Pittsburgh Cold Studies and a paper that came out of them titled “Types of Stressors That Increase Susceptibility to the Common Cold in Healthy Adults” by Cohen et al, 1998), as people like to think you do.

“When a bacteria or virus enter the body, your bodies natural immune system will attack this foreign body by creating an antibody that will destroy these foreign viruses or bacteria's (sic)...”

Okay, sure, that’s not a bad explanation.

“...So, when someone isolates themselves, the virus will still be "out there" and vaccinations will not stop the spread of any virus. A vaccination will force your body to make antibodies, which is the body's natural response to a virus. In other words, the virus will populate the world.“

I’ll be honest, I don’t entirely understand what he means with this passage, but I’ll give it my best shot.

If you never come into contact with a virus, it’s certainly true that you won’t ever get antibodies from it naturally. You also won’t get sick, and won’t have the opportunity to spread it to other people. That’s, like... the entire point of isolation.

But if a vaccine exists, that gives you the opportunity to have the best of both worlds- you get to make antibodies, and you never have to get sick! Score!

And if a lot of people have the antibodies, the illness can’t spread through the population (”herd” or “community” immunity), meaning that very few people get sick. You don’t have to be exposed to the virus after being vaccinated in order to become immune. The vaccine is literally the part of the virus the body needs to be exposed to to learn how to create antibodies.

He then goes on to list the ways in which you can build a strong immune system to fight covid-19. These suggestions include:

“Eat Healthy Natural Foods: These foods have the vitamins and nutriatiants (sic) your body needs to build its immune system.”

Sure, healthy food is good for you. No one’s arguing with you there.

“Get Adjusted: Every tissue in the body depends 100% nerve supply from the brain. These nerves carry all the cells information to repair and regenerate injured tissue. When the nervous systems is interfered with, this communication system between the brain and the tissue cells is weakened, therefore causing decreased immune response.”

This isn’t wrong so much as poorly worded. The brain (and vagus nerve) is involved in healing injured or infected tissues, particularly as part of modulating inflammatory response and eliciting reactions like vomiting, mucous production, and coughing to get rid of irritating substances. The inflammatory response kicks off the healing process, and we know that if the vagus nerve has been cut or in some other way interfered with, there is not as much inflammation across the board (which is why vagus nerve simulators have been shown to work against arthritis).

I’m not sure if there’s literature on chiropractic care improving this, but I certainly don’t think it’s impossible.

May I, however, suggest an editor at this point?

“Sleep 7-9 hours per night: Cellular regeneration happens mostly a night. Drink enough water: Dehydrate causes stress in the body, that will weakened the immune system.“

Great!

“Take natural supplements: These will help your immune systems, if you are not getting enough nutrients and vitamins through your healthy diet.”

Supplements generally aren’t necessary for most people (unless they have a diagnosed deficiency), but if you just like taking a multivitamin no one’s stopping you. Just don’t go overboard.

“P.S. Our team at [redacted] Chiropractic is super healthy. We follow the above guidelines!! We are asking anyone who may be ill, to stay home, or even more important get adjusted in our office [emphasis added]. Just let us know you are not feeling well and we will get you in and out with minimal contact with others. We take pride in cleanliness with all our patients. Hope to see you soon.”

I just... felt the need to leave that last paragraph in it’s entirety. If you’re all the way at the end of this post, you really deserve to read it again and let it sink in that he’s ASKING SOMEONE TO GO OUT IN PUBLIC WITH COVID-19 IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC, IN AN AREA WHERE A “SHELTER IN PLACE” ORDER HAS BEEN ISSUED.

As medical facilities, chiropractic offices are allowed to stay open. I don’t mind this generally. A lot of people rely on chiropractic care for pain control and I would never want to take that away from them if there was another way.

But I work at a doctor’s office (sometimes). We are all but refusing to see patients in the office unless absolutely necessary to comply with social distancing rules and conserve PPE. If I were a chiropractor right now, I would be limiting my services to emergencies or people who really can’t get along without it, and encouraging people to NOT COME IN IF THEY KNOW OR SUSPECT THEY ARE SICK HOLY CRAP MAN STAP.

That’s like, the bare, bare minimum.

quite calm about the whole coronavirus

like he knows it is serious and understands how it is spread but he’s still calm about it??

tells everyone to sanitize and wash hands on a regular. and social distancing!!

honestly still wakes up like he does on normal school days and does all his academics just fine.

he even does gym activities (besides volleyball) for 30 minutes to an hour!!!! he be running on that treadmil! getting stronk!

does each subject on his own for 20-40 min each day. he’s really good at self discipline

makes sure sugawara and asahi are up to date on school work and will gladly help.

sadly can’t help the first years (and probably second years) because that info is deep in his brain and basically forgot how to do it after a year or two of not using it.

VERY VERY VERY sad that volleyball nationals are cut off. this is his last year and for it to be??? gone??? just because of some flu?!?! hates it.

he wishes school to go back and still has hope that school will go back to normal in a couple of weeks (even though it’s a slim chance).

He takes extra care of his family and always stays in touch with other relatives. Especially grandpa and grandma. THE SECOND he learned elderly people are at more risk you bet your ass he’s calling them making sure they’re okay. He checks up on them everyday now.

He peobably practices volleyball a little, too. He’s more focused on schoolwork though.

Still! Playing! Volleyball! I mean by now every boy is practicing at least a little bit. He would probably be in his backyard playing volleyball with his family. Theyy’d set up a net and everythin! They’re all rookies at it but he still cherishes the moments with them.

Viruses live on doorknobs and phones and can get you sick – smart cleaning and good habits can help protect you

One vomiting episode from someone infected with norovirus emits billions and billions of individual viruses. That’s enough to fuel an outbreak – and is exactly what happened in an elementary school in Seattle, Washington a few months ago. Over 100 children got sick with the stomach-churning bug, and the school doors remained closed until workers could decontaminate the lockers, desks and hallways.

You might think of germs mostly passing directly from one person to another, but the outbreak in Seattle illustrates how they can survive on and be transmitted by inanimate objects in the world around us. Epidemiologists like me call these everyday objects – like doorknobs, elevator buttons and cellphones – fomites, and when contaminated, these fomites can make you sick.

Fomites can be an important pathway of disease transmission. They were the main culprits in that norovirus outbreak in Seattle last year and have been the cause of many other outbreaks. In 1908, smallpox outbreaks were traced to contaminated imported cotton. More recently, outbreak studies in day care centers have identified viruses on toys, phones, toilet handles, sinks and water fountains.

The novel coronavirus

The coronavirus is spreading quickly. As concern has increased, I’ve seen more people washing their hands and using hand sanitizer than ever before. While there is still a lot we don’t know about the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, history would suggest that there is probably some transmission from fomites. Everyone should be washing their hands and using hand sanitzer, but taking efforts to clean the things around you is also important to fight the spread of the virus.

For instance, in the last major coronavirus pandemic, SARS in 2002, contaminated surfaces were a major contributor to over 300 cases in a Hong Kong apartment building.

When thinking about how risky transmission via fomites is in an outbreak, the important question is how long can a particular bug survive on surfaces. And there is a lot of variation. Some pathogens can last outside the body for only minutes, while others are hardier and can hold on for days or even months. A new study suggests that the novel coronavirus can survive on some surfaces up to three days, but it varies depending on the material. The study found that the virus could survive for 24 hours on cardboard and up to three days on plastic and stainless steel.

This variation is caused in part by the properties of the surface a virus lands on. Porous material like clothing may allow pathogens to survive longer but it can be harder for a virus to move from your shirt to someone else’s fingers. The matrix fibers in nonporous materials can trap germs making it hard for them to transfer. On the other hand, viruses can more readily transfer from nonporous materials like the glass screen on your phone to fingers, but the virus won’t always survive as long on a glass surface compared to a sweater.

Environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity also influence the viability of a pathogen in the environment.

Persistent bugs and how to get rid of them

It’s nearly impossible to keep anything in the real world virus-free, but during outbreaks like this one it’s a good idea to try to minimize the number of viruses on fomites around you. Some people are practically bathing in hand sanitizer and wiping down everything they touch with disinfectant. But whether this works depends on what virus you are hoping to kill.

Norovirus, for example, is notoriously hardy. After an outbreak on a cruise ship in 2002, the next group of passengers got sick more than a week later after a thorough cleaning of the ship. Many standard cleaners like alcohol or Lysol do not kill norovirus. It takes something as strong as chlorine bleach to get the job done.

In contrast to norovirus, influenza is much less persistent in the environment. While influenza is often lurking in daycare centers during flu season, it typically lasts on surfaces only for hours or a few days. And if you wanted to clean off your phone or countertop, simply wiping it down with an alcohol-based product or ammonia is effective.

While virologists don’t know much about how tough the current coronavirus is, past coronaviruses have fallen somewhere between norovirus and the flu. Like influenza, Lysol will likely kill the coronavirus.

But you don’t necessarily need to kill the virus to make yourself safer. Removing the virus can be just as effective and simply washing often-used objects or your hands with soap can do that.

If you have been in crowded areas or want to be extra careful, washing your hands with soap for 20 seconds will effectively remove germs, and disinfecting tabletops and gym equipment with ammonia will effectively kill most germs.

What can you do in a world with viruses everywhere?

During the coronavirus pandemic, it is important to clean the objects you touch frequently, like keyboards, tabletops and gym equipment.

But while fomites are known to be the culprits in many outbreaks, an individual’s risk depends on a lot of factors. Someone who touches contaminated surfaces frequently, like a health care worker, is more likely to get sick than someone who doesn’t. Risk also depends on personal habits, such as how often one touches their eyes, nose and mouth. And for most infectious diseases, whether someone gets sick and the severity of the illness depends on age and underlying health conditions.

Cleaning objects frequently with a disinfectant is the best way to mitigate the risk of transmission from everyday objects. Hand-washing is also important, especially if done reliably right after coming home from a public place.

Given that germs are ubiquitous, it’s easy to become germ-phobic and strive for a sterile environment. But keep in mind that while basic precautions are important, germs will always find a way to exploit our human environment. You can and should minimize risk, but germs are here to stay.

32. take care of the other when sick

Stirring the large pot with the ladle, Mieczyslaw allowed the aroma of the freshly made chicken soup to waft throughout the loft. Derek’s fever had been relentless, sparking worry in Stiles’ tired bones. He’d never seen the wolf so sick, never seen him this weak before. While Stiles wasn’t much of a chef, he’d learned a few dishes here and there after the death of his late mother. Mostly for when he’d have to take care of his father, especially during flu season when Noah was susceptible to catching the illness. Placing a generous amount of the food into a bowl, Stiles lidded the pot once more, grasping for a spoon from the nearby drawer. 

He’d grown accustom to being in the loft and Stiles knew where most things were at this point. It wasn’t just because he was nosy and had rummaged through different cabinets and drawers before. It was also because he’d been spending much more time with Derek, he’d grown familiar with the place Derek called home. Putting a dash of salt in the soup, he stirred the bowl as he shuffled across the building, coming upon the bed where the werewolf laid sprawled out. Stiles set the bowl of soup on the bedside table, hastily reaching for the damp washcloth he’d left in another bowl on the wooden table. Wringing out the cloth, he blotted up some of the beads of sweat clinging to Derek’s face.

“You can protest all you want, big guy, but I’ve made you some soup and you’re going to eat it.” Mieczyslaw’s voice was almost that of a scolding. When he earned an eye roll from the other male, it was a welcomed response. Derek hadn’t had much energy to protest within the last 24 hours. So, the outcome of this fever and illness seemed to be less bleak. “Was that an eye roll? ‘Cause that’s like the first time you’ve done that in a while.” He commented, placing the cloth aside before reaching for the bowl of soup. Stiles waited for Derek to sit up, examining him thoroughly as he moved gradually, still worn and ghostly looking. Handing over the bowl once prompted, Stiles resumed his efforts at ridding the wolf of some of his fever with the cool cloth, pressing it to his cheek and then his neck.

“Come on!” Stiles’ voice echoed against the loft’s walls. “Give it to me.” He demanded in a light-hearted voice, laughter spilling from his lips, eyes glimmering with enjoyment. Flour had been smeared across his face, littered the floor and the counter top of the kitchen. Their attempt at making pancakes from scratch hadn’t gone smoothly because once Stiles had flicked some of the flour Derek’s way, the wolf had made it quite obvious he was going to retaliate. And he had, smearing the white powder across Stiles’ warm cheeks. This caused Stiles to throw more of the powder at Derek, hitting him square on the bare chest before wiping his hands off on his own pale blue shirt. “I’m trying to make you breakfast, alright?” The younger male chuckled generously.

Derek shook his head, reminding Stiles that they were supposed to be making it together. “As if I don’t know how to make pancakes. I mean, that’s the first thing I was taught.” Mieczyslaw was defiant, though it was a playful refusal. Quickly, Derek spun Stiles around, pulling the slender male into himself, his sturdy arms ghosting over Stiles’ arms until his hands reached the human’s. He helped Stiles crack a few eggs, Stiles’ cheeks flushing furiously from the close proximity of their bodies, though he willfully followed along until both their hands were on the wooden spoon, mixing the flour and eggs until it became a batter thick enough to cook. “These are honestly going to be the messiest pancakes I’ve ever made. And who’s going to clean up this mess, anyway?” Stiles shook his head, still giddy until he leaned back against Derek’s form, enveloped by the wolf’s heat.

39. an actual open honest conversation

“You think you’re the only person who’s got blood on their hands, Derek.” Stiles’ eye contact with the wolf was unwavering as he tended to get lost in the man’s emerald orbs, finding them the most beautiful shade of green. When Derek’s attention seemed piqued, his head tilting to the side gently, that’s when Stiles’ eyes finally shied away from the older man’s. “I’m just saying, even someone like me has their demons.” Swallowing thickly, he recalled the moment he’d killed Donovan, the lifelessness in his body as it was limp and impaled. 

Yes, it had been out of instinct to survive but that didn’t mean the guilt hadn’t swallowed Stiles whole and spat him out just the same. “I’m not the same guy, Derek. And I’m not just talking about the time the Nogitsune was controlling my every move.” No, he was talking about something completely different; something that haunted him more than the Japanese spirit playing with his friends. Amber eyes fell to the floor and he squinted, blinking away the angry tears that threatened to spill onto his cheeks. “I don’t want you to look at me differently. But, even I look at me differently. When I see my own reflection… I’m not the same guy.” The last of his admittance fell softly, almost inaudible because Stiles felt crippled with defeat. 

A lot had changed since Derek had left Beacon Hills and then returned once more. What if he couldn’t look at Stiles the same way now, knowing that he’d spilled blood on his hands too? What if Derek didn’t understand Stiles’ reasoning behind it all? What if he were just another murderer? All those thoughts plagued Mieczyslaw’s mind, wheels spinning with thoughts unwilling to settle.
