Crocet octopus November 26 2024.
I haven't made a video tutorial for this yet because so far have no really good way to prop my phone up so that you can see what I'm doing, while I'm not quite literally dislocating a rib trying to contort my arms to crochet.
I am using two strands of worsted weight yarn (or thereabouts) and a 6mm crochet hook. Smaller or larger yarn or hooks will make your resulting octopus bigger or smaller. Use whatever you've got.
The base of the octopus and the tentacles
Chain 3.
Double crochet 8 times into the first chain. Slip stitch to close.
Chain anywhere from 8-12. I usually do 10. This will determine how long the tentacles are.
When you get to the end of the chain, go back along it, single crocheting once into each chain.
When you are back at the base of the octopus, single crochet into the next stitch over, and chain the same ammount as the first tentacle, once again going back down it with single crochets.
Repeat this until you have eight tentacles.
The body of the octopus
Close the last tentacle with a single crochet into the base, and then start adding single crochets around the circle of the base, using spaces between the tentatcles, to start forming the body.
When you get around to the other side, slip stitch to close.
For the next row of the body, make two normal single crochets, then an increase, and repeat this all the way around. Slip stitch to close.
For the next two rows, make only a single crochet in each stitch.
For the 5th row, decrease every other stitch. You can start filling the octopus now, and add safety eyes if you have them.
Now to form the little braclet part it's a little repetative.
Chain however many chains are required to easily fit around your hand, or the hand of your recipient.
Then cut your yarn tail with an inch or two extra length. Now undo those chains you just made, back to the last row where you decreased.
Pull your yarn through the last loop to fasten it off, and then use your hook to pull this (very long) tail through the top loop of each stitch around your last row, pulling towards the center. When you get around back to the start, make sure you've finished stuffing the octopus, then pull the long tail to cinch the opening shut like a drawstring.
Now pull tight and slip stitch anywhere to secure this, and now once again repeat those chains you did before to form the bracelet section.
Connect the end of this long chain back to the top of your octopus again with a slip stitch, fasten securely, and then use your hook to pull any remaining tail inside the octopus to hide it once you know it won't come undone.

Yatchi x reader
First of all - wow, I'm alive. I haven't posted in forever because I have been working on another big writing project and the manditory exquse that I have school. I'm sorry if my grammar or spelling is dreadful. I'm on a pc and there is no autocorrect. Anyway. It won't be bad if i tell you what the story is about. I got really into crochet recently so I had the idea of Yachi being a croceter (if that is even a word) too teaching Y/n after they see the things she made. I just thought it was cute. Of course, the fic is gender nuteral, as awlays.
_____________________________________________________________
It was the fist time you are going to your girilfriend Yachi's house. You have been dating for a month now and she is even sweeter than you thought initially when you met her. She is just so pure and kind, it's amazing. You two take off your shoes at the genkan and go to her room. It is very cute and there are a lot of stuffed animals. She tells you to sit anywhare and you choose the bed. There are some things catch your eyes - animals that have a very different texture to all the others. You ask her about it:
- Yachi, why do theese stuffed animas have a different texture than the others?
- I made those. They are croheted.
- You can crochet? That sound so cool! Can you show me how it's done?
- O-oh! Of course. Let me get my yarn and hooks. - she gets up and there is a blush visible on her cheeks.
She gets the supplies and makes something that look like a chain. And she is fast. In a miute or so there is already a small rectangle is forming. Somehow Yachi is already done and facenes it. Then she makes a ring and starts to do repeating movements. Before you know it there is a little ball. The possibilities seem endless, especially when you see all the things she has made. All of that makes you ask your girlfriend something:
- Can you teach me, please?
- Huh? You mean... Teach you ro crochet?
- Yep. You're allready a good teacher and this looks fun and useful, so why not?
- Ok! I'll teach you!
- Cool! What do i need to do.
- First i need to teach you about the basics.
In fron of you are, you guess, the essential supplies. A big needle, things that look like safety needles but safe, hooks, yarn, scissors. Yachi explains all of the things and all about yarn in general. The next thing she teaches you is the start of a row project - the little chain things you saw her make.
Like that, you kocked down all complete begginer things. Now all you have to do is practice. The best part is that you're having fun while your girlfriend shares her hobby with you:
- This is really fun! - you say with a grin on your face.
- It is. I also often do it to relax and unwind. It's just so nice when you sit down, put some music on and just crochet away.
- Thank you for teaching me. I cant wait to finish my project. Where did you find this weird ball thing?
- I just thought of it myself. it was just the easiest thing i could give you. Also, before it's fully done i will need to teach you how to sew it together. That is what the big needle I showed you is for.
- Makes sense. I was thinking earlier how will I attach the limbs to the body. Sewing wasn't really what came to mind. I just need to finish the ball and make the hands and feet.
- Yep! You're a fast learner Y/n.
- Am I? I think you're just a great teacher.
- You really think that?
- I'd be lost without you, and you know it! I don't how I can repay you for all the times you've helped me with tutoring.
- It's honestly ok! I love helping you!
- Wait- Am i done?! I am. Can you show me how to close it of again?
- You forgot to stuff it. - she laughs a bit.
- It seems I did...
- Here, let me help you.
_____________________________________________________________
Hope you enjoyed. I tryed to make it as free of crochet terms as possibe for all of the peopke who don't know them. And just FYI the safetypin looking things help you mark where you start making stitches. Very useful.

Note
at the risk of sounding like somebody who's a jerk trying to explain how to handle your dyscalculia to you, when it comes to crocheting, have you considered going through a pattern in advance and assigning letter values to things? Like, "okay, so, seven stitches... would be up to G" or "there's like thirty stitches here, so I'd count from a to z and then to d again/I'd count to A-D?" Like, there's a couple of ways and I'd like for you to be able to crocet without it being a nightmare for you!
hey thanks! Discalcula isn’t the only problem i have, i have a lot of difficulty remembering what I just did, or getting stuck in repetitions, or dissociating while my hands go on autopilot. but if I do try again i’ll definitely try using letters because striking out one of the issues will still make it easier!

The second shift/pettiblouse I made. This is the first time I did the kind of shift construction where the rectangles for the body are larger, and you take the gores from triangles cut out of it from the shoulder to the middle. It has the resulting shape of a trapeziod instead of a rectangle until the waist, with triangles added to the rectangle after the waist. I did the sleeves width according to what was efficient with the fabric. I'm really happy with the sleeves, how they are just a little eased into a narrow band, and then with lace (handmade croceted by an unknown person!) covering it, looks very nice. A wider plain band that was loose I think would have looked stupid, and I like the look of this even though I don't like loose straight short sleeves. I really like it and will do more of this in the future, it is more comfortable than a tighter band and doesn't hurt if it pushes up when I put a coat on top. I was planning on adding the lace to the neckline, but had a hard time deciding what to do about it. Given that this looks so nice under this higher neck vintage dress I just got from my friend Justine, I can totally put it off until later, or not do it at all. I did non-square or non-equilateral triangles for the first time, I initially did squares, but it was far too tight in the bust, and redid it with triangles cut from a longer rectangle. It's not on my body here, but it really fits amazingly perfectly and is probably the exact tightest-fitting and highest-neckline shift possible without it being too tight for comfort, too hard to get over the head, or too tight to get over the bust. I really am amazed at how modern a fit this is. This shift used less than the whole yard of 60" wide linen, and it has some useful rectangles left over for future gussets, etc. The last shift used exactly the yard of linen with nothing left over save the semi-circle cut out for the neckline, and that one is wider in the hips, and has plain sleeves that I don't intend to stick out of the armholes of a jumper.

Alright story time. When I was younger my grandmother tried teaching me to crochet and I could NOT. I had never tried knitting before either, but no one in my family really new how to. My mom croceted and so did a lot of my family, but no one really knit. One day when I got older I taught myself how to knit. My mom has tried so many times and could never get the hang of it. Then another day I was like “fuck it” and decided to try crocheting again and found out, much to my surprise, I was pretty good at it. Now my mom is LIVID because I can do both and she can barely hold knitting needles. Anyways don’t give up if you want to learn the other one because you may surprise yourself. Just go slow, take your time, and practice. You got this.
So recently on a Zoom call, I, a knitter, was calling crocheting impossible and painful. A crocheter happened to be on the call as well and was saying that, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t get the hang of knitting.
Apparently, most of the people she knows who work with yarn can only do one or the other, and meeting someone who both knits and crochets is like meeting an ambidextrous person
So knitters and crocheters, reblog/reply to this with which one you are, if you can do both or not, and/or your thoughts on this “can only do one” phenomenon

Hi friends!   I just took up crochet, and I was wondering if any of you would like to buy any of my work. I’m currently making paci pockets, which are itty bitty croceted envelopes so that you can bring your paci with you in a backpack or purse. Ive got lots of colors I can make them. I dunno how expensive to make them but I’m going to make them relatively cheap so that everyone can keep their paci’s clean.
