Sick Days: ploy!kiribaku x you
Waking up, you felt a heavy pressure on your forehead and a runny nose. Oh no, you were sick. A soft whimper escaped your lips as you slowly rose from the shared bed with your alphas, Kirishima and Bakugou. A faint smile crept across your face as you felt Kirishima nuzzle into your waist, while Bakugou mumbled, “Five more minutes…”
You chuckled, but your amusement was interrupted by the soft creak of the door. Your youngest pup, Himari, stood there, her ruby-red eyes wide with curiosity. You smiled warmly and opened your arms, inviting her onto the bed. As you nuzzled the top of her head, she purred softly, “Why are you warm, Mommy?”
“I’m just a little sick, baby,” you replied gently.
“Sick!” Himari gasped, her tiny hands covering her mouth in shock. You shushed her softly, “Shh, baby, your dads are still sleeping—”
“Not anymore. Who’s sick?” Bakugou scoffed, sitting up with a grumble. He planted a quick kiss on your cheek and then pulled Himari into his arms, nuzzling her chubby cheeks. Himari looked up at him and proudly declared, “Mommy, she’s sick!”
Bakugou hummed in acknowledgment, his hand brushing your forehead before resting his own against yours. His voice was laced with concern as he said to Himari, “That’s right, mommy’s sick. You know what that means, princess?”
Himari’s face lit up with excitement. “Mommy gets pampered today!”
“That’s right,” Bakugou smiled softly, his thumb gently brushing through her black, spiky hair. Kirishima, still half-asleep, groaned from his side of the bed, “What’s all the noise about?”
You chuckled quietly at the playful banter between them, despite the dull ache building in your head. “It’s okay, baby. I’m not that sick,” you reassured Kirishima, who now sat up, stretching with a yawn.
“You’d better let us take care of you today,” Kirishima said, his voice still thick with sleep but filled with that familiar warmth that always made your heart flutter. He reached over and gently kissed your forehead. “You always take care of everyone else, now it’s our turn.”
Bakugou gave a firm nod, his usual gruffness tempered by the rare tenderness on his face. “Yeah, no arguing. You’re staying in bed today. We’ll handle everything.”
You smiled up at both of them, feeling an overwhelming rush of gratitude for how they always cared for you, even in the busiest of times. Despite your protests, you could see the determination in their eyes.
Himari, who had been sitting in Bakugou’s lap, chirped excitedly, “I’ll make soup for Mommy!” She held up her small hands as though ready to take on the task herself. You couldn’t help but laugh.
“Alright, alright,” you said, still smiling despite the growing headache. “You can help, baby.”
Bakugou let out a small, affectionate snort. “She’s got the right idea.” He then turned to Kirishima with a smirk. “We’ll get the soup going, and you can make sure she’s comfortable. That means no moving around, got it?”
Kirishima stretched again, still groggy but nodding obediently. “Got it, boss. I’ll spoil her rotten.” He gave you a soft, almost apologetic smile. “You just rest, babe.”
With your two alphas and your adorable pup all making it clear they weren’t going to let you lift a finger today, you finally allowed yourself to relax, sinking into the warmth of Kirishima's chest. Maybe being sick wasn’t so bad after all. You watched some of your show while hearing Himari and Bakugou laughing in the kitchen.
“Mom? What is going on?” Daichi’s voice was filled with concern as he stretched, running a hand through his messy blonde hair. His eyes flickered between you and his dads, who were bustling around the room, preparing to pamper you.
You gave him a tired but affectionate smile, your voice soft. “I’m just a little under the weather, sweetie. But don’t worry, your dads are taking good care of me today.”
Daichi raised an eyebrow, glancing over at Bakugou and Kirishima, who were already working together in their usual, synchronized chaos. Bakugou was rummaging through the kitchen, while Kirishima was fluffing pillows on the bed with a determined look on his face.
“You’re really letting them take care of you today?” Daichi asked, half-amused, half-concerned. “I thought you were the one who always took care of everything.”
You chuckled, despite the stuffy nose. “Well, it’s their turn today.”
Daichi shook his head with a smile, clearly fond of the way things worked in your family. “Alright, but if you need anything, I’m here too.”
“Thanks, Daichi,” you said warmly. “But your dads have got this.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he muttered, but his smile softened as he looked at you. “Just rest, Mom. You deserve it.”
As he moved to the door, Bakugou tossed a playful glare in his direction, “Oi! Make sure you’re not adding to the noise, kid. We’ve got this covered.”
Daichi just laughed, his usual teasing tone taking over. “I’ll keep it down, Bakugou. You guys are acting like it’s a full-on mission or something.,old man”
You could hear the lighthearted banter as Daichi left the room, and you felt a sense of warmth in your chest. Despite being sick, your family’s care and love were always there to remind you that, no matter what, you weren’t alone.

Why RWBY Ain't MC?
(Okay if you already seen this ('Jaune More MC Ruby? 'https://rachetmath.tumblr.com/post/744057722669039616/jaune-more-mc-ruby) Then you should know where this is going.)
Jaune: And that's what is wrong with your characters.
RWBY: *shocked*
Ruby: Oh crap.
Weiss: Oh God…
Blake: My people…
Yang: I am a basic bitch?
Jaune: Yeah you girl's characters are all over the place. Not just that… you have so much screen time yet do nothing with it. You're basically side characters to your own stories.
Yang: Not true.
Jaune: Yes true. Look let's start with Ruby.
Ruby: Me?
Jaune: Yeah, because some of my character issues should have been yours, like killing Penny for example. Considering that was suitable punishment for what you have done. You lied to James. You drove him off the rails. You and your team made the mess.
Ruby: Um…
Jaune: But that's too easy. Let's really go down the shit hole. Ruby, you have silver eyes. Yet you barely use them. You never trained with them. We still know nothing about them. And we don’t know if they’ll work on Salem.
Ruby: um…
Jaune: And you know that would have been answered back at Atlas if you went on the battlefield. Speaking of Salem, why the hell would you put Ironwood someone more of my problem than Salem, if I recall knows who your mom is.
Ruby: Well I had to protect Penny.
Jaune: Mhmm. Okay. Speaking of your mom what did you learn about her in The Ever After?
Ruby: Um-
Jaune: Not much. Yeah. And again no villain besides Cinder and Neo were interested in you. Not even you are interested in them considering you barely remember them. Like Ruby, you don't do anything. Like you fast but slow in the head. Hell even Neo ganging up on you, you still didn't deserve it. I actually deserved it.
Ruby: How?
Jaune: Again Pyrrha died. Ozpin died. All because of me. And even if you killed Penny it's still going to feel like my fault because I could've prevented it.
Ruby: Oh no.
Weiss: Jaune-
Jaune: Nope. Your turn. You are worse than your father.
Weiss: I-
Jaune: You talk about how your father does business but you don’t do business. Nor do you know how to run a business.
Weiss: I mean-
Jaune: You lied to your sister’s face. Your sister who trained you and made sure you were able to leave Atlas. You got Klien fired. You threatened your own brother.
Weiss: Um-. I-i
Jaune: Oh let’s not forget how you destroyed your home and now your family is broke.
Weiss: Well at least I’m a good teammate.
Jaune: Didn’t you almost divide your team about two times? Also, how is everyone insulting me when you barely win your fights?
Weiss: Not true.
Jaune: Flynt Coal.
Weiss: Luck.
Jaune: Vernal.
Weiss: I was rusty.
Jaune: More like spamming.
Weiss: We defeated the Ace-ops.
Jaune: Neo and Cinder. The ones who were supposed to be on the same level as them. Did you win?
Weiss: Shit.
Jaune: You know what I should mention this. In Argus, I must have been under some stress or high as a kite, because now that I think about it, the deal Cordoven gave us, wasn’t that bad.
Weiss: Jaune she was planning to send me back to my father.
Jaune: Alright, then instead of accepting those terms and going to face your father, basically lying claim to your life, you cowardly avoided him and let your friends be what scares him. Not you. In fact, you were willing to endanger yourself and thousands of people to avoid him.
Weiss: … … ….
Jaune: Look I understand you don’t have to face everything alone. But there are some moments you have to deal with alone. Instead of having to escape your father like last time, you could have returned, stood up to him, and left out the front door from which you came in. Why? Because that’s how much you care about your friends and your freedom that you won’t let anybody, especially a man you can easily crush into ground beef take from you.
Weiss: By god. I am my father.
Jaune: Yeah. Blake.
Blake: *looks at him*
Jaune: Blake, I would be concerned for my people if I were you.
Blake: Why?
Jaune: Well-
Me: Nope. Nope. I’ll explain. Blake, you remember the hound right?
Blake: Yeah.
Blake: A silver-eyed person.
Me: Look at his head.
Blake: “Look at his head”? I mean I see- oh. Oh my god.
Me: Yeah. A faunus. People who have animal-like features. Again with silver eyes, we know nothing. But Faunuses on the other hand, we know where this could lead to.
Blake: Oh no.
Me: And you single-handedly divided the White Fang. And if hunters or people start siding with Salem, what does that mean for the Faunuses who are now venerable because of you?
Blake: Oh GOD! What have I done?!
Me: I mean I started questioning whether you cared about your people or not. Considering you didn’t bother staying in Mantle to protect them. You trust a criminal more than an official officer or hunter. Even though Robyn was doing the same crap Adam and Roman were doing. Good job.
Blake: *crying*
Me: Now for you.
Yang: Me?
Me: Yes. I never thought I come back for your ass. But here we are. Now then, what the fuck did Raven tell you to do?
Yang: Um.
Me: The same thing your father was telling you to do. Think. Don’t just follow orders. Don’t just act. Think!
Yang: I did but-
Me: You didn’t think it through.
Yang: Look trusting Robyn-
Me: When you confronted Robyn what was your plan afterwards?
Yang: Um-
Me: Remember you didn’t tell her everything so she was still skeptical. She was tearing James a new one. So what was the point?!
Yang: Um-
Me: I mean, how were you going to chop Ruby off when ultimately you are more at fault than she is?
Yang: Um.
Me: Like at least Ruby was trying to lower the tension. You as per-fucking-usual added way more fuel to an already heated fire.
Yang: Well-
Me: I already mentioned how you are the biggest hypocrite, a simp and horrible sister. Now I might as well say you are the weakest link in your team– no, your squad.
Yang: Hey-
Me: You've been losing fights.
Yang: Name-
Me: Mercury.
Yang: I beat him.
Jaune: Wasn’t that part of the plan to set you up though?
Yang: Yeah but-
Me: Round two, what happened then?
Yang: They double-teamed me.
Me: Before that you couldn’t land hit on him.
Yang: … … Adam.
Me: 2 v 1. He wasn’t even at his best. Bro was in his feelings.
Yang: The Ace-ops-
Me: Marrow, for one, could’ve ended that fight before it started. Second weren’t they arguing half the battle? Also didn’t Elm have your partner and for “reasons” she decided to let Blake go? Selling the match.
Yang: A win is a win.
Me: Okay Salem. Did you stand your ground and fight?
Yang: Um. Tactical retreat?
Me: She wasn’t even putting in effort. The cat.
Yang: I mean-
Me: Kilgore.
Yang: He does not count.
Me: Neo and Cinder. Again, on Ace-op level.
Yang: Come on, man, she-
Me: A win is a win right? So if you get a ring out or fall that is not victory. Neo won. Two to Zero.
Yang: … … …
Me: Raven… Raven trusted the lamp to you. Not Ruby. You! And you just… you just lost it like that. You fumbled- you fumbled so bad. And what’s crazy is I mentioned how you searched for the deadbeat instead of your “real mom” but it seems Raven is a better mom than Summer now. How? Not only is she alive. She knows what happened to Summer. And she saved your ass so many times. Three times.
Yang: Not-
Me: The train. Your first defeat.
Yang: … ….
Me: I’m not going to count Adam. But she let you leave her tribe camp alive, with your friend no less, knowing full well she didn’t have to help you especially when you came to her and was ready to fight when she wouldn’t give you what you wanted.
Yang: …. ….
Me: And she let you walk with the relic. She could’ve killed you two times. But she didn’t. Why? Because whether she likes it or not, you are her DAUGHTER! And she LOVES you!
Yang: Um…
Me: I hope- I hope Raven puts her hands on you because you earned the most savage ass whipping alive. You basic bitch.
Yang: *shocked*
Me: Anyways y'all had plenty of opportunities to make your characters good. You all were given a good amount of screen time, however, the writers don't allow you to face your problems, shield you from consequences, and try so hard to prove you are always in the right all the time that you all might as well be Mary Sue. The worst kind of Mary Sue. The do no wrong type of Mary Sue.
Jaune: Damn.
Me: Jaune, bro, I hope you survive this cause I still stand by this the writers did you dirty man. You didn't deserve that man. You didn't- you didn't deserve that. You and your team deserve better.

RWBY Volume 9 Was A Total Missed Opportunity:
Putting this out there right now. Volume 9 is by far my favorite volume of RWBY for many reasons which I will not be addressing in this post, but there are a few things that have been on my mind since it's been released where I feel the storyline went wrong and could have been something so much more meaningful for the character's story arcs and development.
Starting off with our main man or should I say our old man Jaune Arc. His presence throughout Vol. 9 felt out of place not just for his character, but also the way his development was handled didn't feel right in the slightest. Becoming a crazy old crackpot because he foolishly made bad decision after bad decision, completely altering and undoing a lot of his character's timeline, and turning into this sort of secondary antagonist for Team RWBY made no sense to me. The way he said so many out of pocket things throughout the different episodes, including completely crossing a line with Ruby and being insensitive towards her mental and emotional condition instead of showing genuine concern like he normally would have, made me cringe to where I wasn't enjoying what I was watching anymore. Not in a good way!
Here's how I would have done it:
Going back to the very end of volume 8 where we see Jaune running towards the portal and barely missing it by mere inches, followed by seeing him fall into the dark abyss and joining the same fate as Team RWBY and Neo. Instead of that, we see him jumping through the portal at the very last second and making it to Vacuo by the skin of his teeth. The others see him and question why he's alone and where Team RWBY was, only for him to go "Uh..." and then the screen cuts to black and the credits start rolling.
We're gonna skip the three year hiatus and jump right into the beginning of Vol. 9 where only Team RWBY and Neo have fallen into the Ever After. For the first few episodes leading up to the reveal of the Rusted Knight, I don't think much needs to change except for the fact that they won't ever encounter Jaune, but they will still encounter the Rusted Knight who, in this version, is someone that would have had the entire fandom shook to their core when the big reveal of the Rusted Knight's identity happened: Pyrrha.
Now, how would she get to this point, you might ask? Well, remember when she got pierced by Cinder's Arrow and her body seemed to disintegrate? This scene:
This death compared to all the other characters who were killed off was unique in the fact that there was no body left behind and it almost appeared her energy was transported to another place. Hmm, perhaps another realm such as the In Between or the Ever After? Why this happened, in my opinion, was because of the use of someone else's semblance. We know very little about Pyrrha's family and have only seen her mother on screen once, so we don't know much about her backstory or semblance either. However, if her semblance worked anything like Raven's to where she needed to be attached to someone in order for her semblance to work and transfer her loved ones to a safer location to escape a deadly threat, now we have something. What if her mom's semblance transported the body to another realm of her choice right before the moment of death? (I like to call it a "divine intervention" semblance.) If that's the case, then why wouldn't it make sense for a mother's love to send her daughter somewhere familiar and (relatively) safe and still accessible to Remnant? The Ever After was based on a children's tale that everyone knew growing up and Pyrrha being as smart as she is would instantly recognize where she was transported to. Maybe she had knowledge of her mother's semblance and knew this might have happened one day, or maybe not. I find the one scene her mother is in to be very interesting because while she was talking to Jaune, she had a very bitter-sweet attitude about it and almost talked as if she knew more than she let on, but I digress.
In the story's timeline, when Team RWBY arrives in the Ever After, Pyrrha would have been there already for a couple of years. That would have given her enough time to establish herself and explore the different acres because let's be real here, Pyrrha wouldn't have stumbled upon the time travel fruit and messed around with it like Jaune did, nor would she have focused all her energy into the people of the land even though she would protect them with her life if she had to, but at the end of the day, she was just trying to figure out a way home. Once she stumbles across Team RWBY, it would all make sense why the Tree didn't let her return to Remnant yet. By this point, I'm sure she would have encountered Alyx, Lewis, and the Curious cat, probably handled the situation a lot better than Jaune did, and give Team RWBY a cautionary tale about the Curious Cat in a way that wasn't bitter or vengeful. The bee's having their special moment still would have happened, the team's fallout with the Curious Cat still would have gone down, and then we get to the scene with Neo's Jabber Walker clones and Ruby has her mental breakdown and identity crisis. I don't see Pyrrha blaming Ruby for what happened to the Paper Pleasers despite her immense sorrow for the loss of her only friends she had during her time in the Ever After. Her experiences with the Paper Pleasers would have been way different too because there's no way she'd be a gold-hearted tyrant like Jaune was painted out to be. I do see Ruby blaming herself and still running off anyway because she feels like a burden and a failure as a leader. I didn't enjoy the way Jaune was the center of focus when Ruby was very clearly in a dangerous state of mind and I'm positive Pyrrha would have picked up on it right away and address it to Ruby's team after the fact and not go off on her for not doing enough.
Team RWPY would go on the search for Ruby and still find her in Neo's torture dungeon, which would have been just as painful to watch, especially from Pyrrha's point of view. Ruby having to watch Pyrrha die in Vol.3 and now she had to witness Ruby "die" in Vol. 9 is kind of a trippy coincidence that fits so well. The only difference being Pyrrha immediately taking the initiative to find Ruby before the cat does and the final battle being way more epic. Jaune certainly gained a lot of battle experience throughout the series, but Pyrrha was always ahead of him in that respect and without a doubt would have sharpened her skills to perfection while she was on her own in the Ever After. Ruby emerges as a new version of herself, they defeat the Curious Cat, Neo ascends, and all of the girls finally get to go home together, hand in hand.
I can even go as far as to say this would have made Vol. 9 Beyond so much better too. Picture it, Team RWBY and Pyrrha leaving the portal and the first person to see them is Jaune. The potential for Arkos here is so strong it kills me inside! They'd have a raw moment between each other, there'd be lots of crying on Jaune and maybe even Pyrrha's part too, a long hug, and most definitely a romantic kiss that would have tied their relationship arc together in such a perfect way. It would have brought Pyrrha back and that's honestly all I want.
Of course, this is all just for shits and giggles, but I'd love to hear what y'all think or if you have something else to add! ^-^

I'm feeling really optimistic in some way after having read that Hikaru had a soul that goes as far as being described as "noble" from an actual god who deals with souls!! That's EXACTLY the way I see him, and whenever I see this guy appear I do see he still has some of that character retained within him. I can tell he is a kind soul or at least used to be.
This really isn't a bad sign to have something like that introduced and confirmed about him because, if we only could get the idea of him having done evil get debunked somehow, things could really go the way Ai wants it to be, you know?
To have a guy with a supposedly noble soul break down and suffer and rot away in the end, have him turn out to be a messed up villian? That's just cruel and the fact that this guy's the father of the protagonists and the beloved of the key character of the story makes it leave even worse of a taste.
I write stories myself although I'm very shy to share them- so I think I have a good idea of how this is going to go actually, we're already getting some signs of him being portrayed as a character who could be redeemed, at the VERY end of the series. Ofc we could have inferred it out on our own but Hikaru having had a NOBLE soul is new info about this guy. Why add that idea right now if we're going to see him get punished or die in the end? It's because the idea that he IS noble(or used to be)is still something that is worth being addressed. I feel like this idea is something that can be expanded upon, and that's what makes me a bit excited because I thought he really is that sort of guy all along after having gone through many analysis about the character.
At least, I feel this proves that he's treated Ai really well and that's how Ai decided she'd risk everything to keep him and his children safe with all she had. So he was a very lovely person to her. Her feelings towards him as said in 154 has a strong base. So yeah, I think I can feel comfortable about drawing them all happy and loving..........except the claims he's facing right now are so bad but those are just words.. Still no proof... What did he do oh my god. I'll just trust my guts on this one. At least he really did not want his son to die and tried to persuade him away from it and it didn't work lol
Anyhow, I feel like Ai's relationship with Hikaru would have been sweet in general without the sufferings he went through that put him in shambles, and she was worried over it, but she wanted to shoulder it with him. She says that herself. She couldn't because she thought she'd be another burden of his which is so tragic. Ai always loved him a lot...and he seems to be deserving of it, I'm relieved and happy she did find someone who was really worth caring so much for. He was that kind of person back then at least!! And I did not, and would not take it any other way! Really happy about that being sort of affirmed(wow, I'm so positive.. But why wouldn't I be? It's just as I thought!)
Don't worry about this guy, he can't die right here because there's still many things that are so confusing about him and I feel he CAN'T DIE. If the songs are from his perspective there is a stage he can't escape from, I feel like he'd have actually wanted to FOLLOW Ai after her death but something "gave him time" and some sort of false hope and kept him alive
And Aqua won't die either, the way I had no concerns about Ruby's life being at stake after 158, I don't have an ounce of worry regarding his survival. He's going to be fine here. Even if Aqua dies, it's not going to be like this because it's dumb. He's barking up the wrong tree and tried to kill someone with a noble soul that his mom asked him to save. It's not going to happen.
They could drag this on for like 5-6 eps but things will clear up and soon, I feel the only way left is up.

LET ADD MORE TRAUMA TO CAT VS DOG cause I thought this and so you must suffer with me after getting back Jaune due to CC trauma spilled something on his shirt and takes it off and what does everyone see? A bunch of claw scars all over his body and RWBY sees it was not just psychologically abusive but also very much physically.
Been looking for an excuse to post this for a while, so hope y’all like ;)
———
The Punderstorm is a bad time all around
Jaune tells RW about Alyx and Lewis while not mentioning a thing about CC. Even less than they’re mentioned in the original. To the point where it’s obvious CC was there during the events, Jaune is just deliberately avoiding talking about them
Weiss was already suspicious after the cat said “You didn’t tell your friends about us?” Because what is THAT supposed to mean?! But she gets even more sus after CC appears in the Punderstorm and Juane seems torn between standing between CC and RW, and hiding behind his friends.
Especially when the timeline diverges slightly, with CC still leaving but promising to be back to see their Sunshine.
And when Jaune flinches, Weiss sees. Because it’s the same way her mom would flinch every time Jacques moved too quickly.
They exit the storm, and Jaune is too shaken to even tease Blake and Yang about getting together. He doesn’t even notice when Weiss pulls Blake aside to talk, shooting him NOT subtle glances the whole time. All he can hear is CC’s voice, laughing in his mind.
While Jaune retreats into his mind to have his breakdown in peace, Weiss talks to the newly smitten bees about everything she saw. And they might be smitten, but BOTH of them are alert immediately when Weiss describes how Jaune acted around CC.
Personal experience is a bitch.
CC is a different flavor of toxic, sure. Less angry, more saccharine, but dangerous all the same.
When Weiss brings up that he flinched like her mother does, Yang’s mind drifts unbidden to the streaks of white in Jaune’s hair and the gray in his once-blue eyes. Blake was only with Adam for a few years. What could’ve happened to her if she was with him for DECADES with no hope of truly escaping?
Unfortunately they don’t have to imagine, because it seems like Jaune is a living specimen.
He takes them to his village, his home ever since getting poisoned by Alyx. And Jaune, shaken to his core and seconds from a panic attack, pulls a classic Jaune move and puts his fracturing psyche aside because Ruby Needs Crescent Rose.
Let it never be said that he has healthy coping mechanisms.
Weiss is more concerned because the Punderstorm clearly put them in situations that they needed to confront. It sped up what were inevitable meetings. It brought Yang and Blake together, and for some reason it brought Jaune and the cat together.
They have to talk to him. Ruby is getting some well earned sleep, so she’s not going to be any help. Yang and Blake share an unspoken conversation in that way that never fails to get on Weiss’s nerves, and Yang reluctantly agrees to let the two of them handle it.
When they step through the doorway, the first thing they see is his armor, rusted and corroding in a neat pile by the wall. Jaune is just sitting on his bed, on top of the paper covers, stock still and staring at his hands that are white-knuckling his knees. His hair is short, cropped even closer to his skull than it was before and streaked with so much white that there’s barely any blonde left.
Not for the first time BLake wonders if he’s been here long enough for age to do that to him, or if the stress of this fairy tale land was enough.
With the armor removed, they can see thick bands of white scarring up and down his arms, across his neck, curling away under the sleeves of his tattered Pumpkin Pete hoodie. The logo is all but gone. The scars look like claw marks, too narrow to be from the Jabberwalker.
Possessive.
Claiming.
A cat’s scratching post turned human.
Weiss wants to scream, but more than anything she wants to take Myrtenaster and give that fucking cat a taste of their own medicine. But Blake just walks forward, being careful to keep her movements clear and her footsteps loud. She sits on the bed and Jaune still doesn’t move, doesn’t even look at her.
Weiss thinks it would’ve been better if he’d flinched. This still, small, silent Jaune is worse than any Grimm. That’s not her friend.
Blake is rubbing circles into Jaune’s back, and Weiss feels like an idiot because she’s just STANDING there. She’s never been good at gentle comfort, hard truths are more her go to. But Jaune looks like if he heard a hard truth right now he might shatter like so much glass. A broken children’s doll with scars as cracks in the porcelain of his goosebump-covered skin.
Eventually Blake catches her eyes and her gaze softens. She nods her head to Jaune’s other side, and that’s all the invitation Weiss needs. All the while Blake keeps rubbing slow circles into Jaune’s back.
Now that she’s closer, Weiss can see that he isn’t frozen still, he’s trembling. Trembling in a way she hasn’t seen since nearly carrying her to the portal exit, shattered sword in one hand. Since charging at a Maiden with a death wish in his heart. Since stumbling back to the docks in Glynda’s wake, tear tracks making silverly lines through the dirt on his face and too-familiar lipstick smeared on his mouth.
“You know, Adam used to call me Darling,” Blake says quietly.
Weiss’s breath catches at the forbidden name, but Blake’s voice is steady. Even keeping vigil with their near comatose friend, she can’t help the curl of pride at how far her teammate has come.
“It’s such a simple thing, but I still can’t bear to be called that,” Blake continues, voice quiet and steady. “It’s a terrible thing to be trapped like that. Nobody deserves to be trapped with… with someone you hate and love and fear all at the same time.”
And finally Jaune’s shell cracks, a sob like a desperate gasp for air escaping his lips.
The trembling turns to tremors which turn to shaking sobs which turn to all out wails as Jaune crumbles like he’s as fragile as the paper covers they all sit on.

His family is concerned about him and they start makign moves to ensure his children, barely toddlers, are cared for if something happens to him. Upon learning about this, he does the perfectly same thing of running away with them in the middle fo the night.
14 years later, Stella and August Walker have been raised in the hunting lifestyle. Though Cordell tried to keep their lives as normal as possible, there was no keeping them away from the danger of the monster world. When he goes missing on a job, Stella and August do everything in their power to find him. After hitting one dead end too many, they decide to take a long shot and go somewhere they haven't been since that fateful night: Home
Father/Son Bonding Time(?)- And then it hit him. Twyla had clearly been prepared to talk to him. Dad had been expecting her. This wasn’t some chance meeting. It had been planned. Dad invited him out her to dinner, alone, at his favorite food truck, not because he wanted to hang out with his son, but because he wanted August to formally meet Twyla.
Don't Run Away- In which August revealed Stella's lies during the intervention scene in 1x12

No Means No, 2nd Edition- This is another version of a previously written story in which Ruby raped August in 1x17. This was actually the version I'd started writing first but I ended up going a different direction. I kept the skeleton of this version around though and now I present it to you here. Enjoy.
A Study in Arrogance- 3x02 AU- Stella promises Shannon she can get the money, she just needs a little time. Shannon decides to take August as collateral.
A Special Dinner- Cordell is making a special dinner for his and Emily's anniversary. If only she was coming…..
Shame verse- Omegaverse AU featuring Omega!August
Behind Closed Doors- AU in which Emily groomed August and no one was the wiser, least of all Cordell. Cordell has to process what his wife did to his son under his nose and August has to accept what happened to him.
Parallels- Cordell Walker is finally home after being released by the FBI. His whole family is worried about him but he's a little more worried about August.
Teetering On The Edge- Feeling as though his family doesn’t love him anymore, or even hates him, after everything he’s done, August runs away and plans to kill himself. Cassie sees him sitting on the edge of a bridge and talks him down. She takes him to her place and convinces him to stay with her for a few days (or more) while he gets his mental health in a better place. August is happy for the help, but will he have the strength to confront his family about what happened?
Big Girl Lost- Two "missing scenes" from 3x16. Chapter 1: What happened between August and Sadie before Cordell got home?
Sammy Reborn- After losing his Sammy, Dean finally found him again. He's the only one happy about it though. August Walker is taken in the dead of night, leaving his family scrambling to find him. In the meantime, he has to deal with a delusional man named Dean Winchester who seems to have him confused with his little brother. He's willing to do anything to get back home to his real family but there's only so long he can hold out. Will Cordell be able to find him in time? Or will it be too late?
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?- August has some big news for his family this Thanksgiving
At the Stables- August and Sadie have a horseback riding session
I'm August- In which August Walker comes out
No Means No- August nodded. And for some reason that made him feel dizzy. That was not good. Maybe this had been a bad idea. He clearly wasn’t feeling well. He made to get up and tell her as much but he couldn’t get his limbs to move the way he wanted them to. Or very much at all really. Just enough to shove himself off the couch and onto the patio.
Mixed Feelings- August is a romantic who believes in soulmates, Sadie is the opposite. When they meet, sparks fly and August is very excited about it. Sadie is not.
This Old Song and Dance- In which Sadie is a dancer, August plays the piano, and there's a routine they know all too well. It's a routine they perform every night, even when Sadie isn't onstage.
Skinny Dipping- A heatwave has hit Austin. August and Sadie find a way to cool off
You're Gonna Go Far Kid- August waits in the wings while Sadie gives her first TV interview
Only For You- Being a couple is all about making compromises
Funhouse Mirror- August and Stella are messing around with spells again. August suffers the consequences.
False Smiles and Pretty Lies- James told Walker that his family had to attend the medal ceremony to keep Kevin's guard down and make it easier to catch him. Cordell reluctantly agreed and did his best to prepare his family for it. Unfortunately, they lose track of August during the panic when Grey Flag attacks and Kevin takes the opportunity to use him as leverage in his escape. Now it's up to Cordell to rescue his son and try not to do something to James that will cost him his badge.
I Never Wanted To Leave- What if Cordell never came back from his undercover mission? How would the family handle it? How would Stella and August cope?
And how would the resident ghosts try to fix it?

One Word Prompt: Fish
Title: Scaled and Icy
Pairing: Platonic, familial Logince
Summary: “Oh, Virgil is going to hate him. He’s going to erupt in a rant about Logan being too impulsive as if Logan doesn't think out every action in a methodical manner.” Or. Logan decides to adopt an abandoned human child.
Word-Count: 1k
Warnings: Dubious Morally Grey Logan, Merfolk But They’re Like Fae!, Presumed Child Abandonment, Slightly Unreliable Narrator, Transformation, Emotional Manipulation, Mentioned Cannibalism (Kinda), Angst With a Kinda Happy Ending, Don’t Worry Roman’s fine, Probably, It’s Dark Fairytale Vibes Okay
Here, have another eldritch logan adopts a child au!
-
"You're like a fish!" The human child crows, his brown eyes alit with both wonder and joy. He couldn't be much older than three, possibly four. Which is all the more concerning, really, for where is his parents?
Logan blinks. "Not entirely but yes, I do share similar characteristics to them."
"Fish, fishy, fish-man!" The child declares, pudgy fingers reaching to touch Logan's bioluminescent blue scales.
"A-aahah--" Logan begins, moving slightly back, "Please refrain from touching people without asking their permission first."
He tilts his head, golden brown locks falling over his eyes. "Pleeeease can I?"
"Of course, thank you for asking."
The human child's face brightens at this. He reaches again, this time delicately touching Logan's scales with care.
"Whoa," The human child breathes in, "It'ssocool."
He then draws the hand away, resting it against the sandy shore. "My name is Roman and I wanna be a prince! What's your name?"
"You may call me Logic," Logan smiles, showing a slip of his sharp needle-like teeth. There's several rows of them unlike a human’s set of teeth.
This terrifies most humans, but not Roman who possesses the boundless courage of childhood. He leans closer, face scrunching up.
"Logic's a silly name." He declares.
Logan laughs, "Well good thing it's not my true name."
"It's a pretend name? Like make-believe?"
"Essentially, yes. You shouldn't give names away, they have power."
Roman doesn't seem to heed Logan's words, instead protesting, "Well, then, I wanna be Prince Romanul-us-ulus--Romulus then!"
Logan lets out a low, crooning noise, one generally meant to console young merlings. He never expected himself to so enchanted with a child, let alone a human one. Yet the instinctual parental drive is stronger than he thought.
"Well, Roman, would you like to be a prince?" Oh, Virgil is going to hate him. He’s going to erupt in a rant about Logan being too impulsive as if Logan doesn't think out every action in a methodical manner.
"Well, yeah!" Because Roman needs someone to look after him. His parents are clearly not doing a great job of it. He could've gotten swept up in the waves and died if not for Logan.
"Take my hand, come with me then, Roman." This is something the Ocean surely wills. She offered Roman to Logan and he must honor that.
"Okay!" Roman says, eagerly taking Logan's webbed hand.
And it's all Logan needs to pull the child underneath the water, wrapping his arms tightly before Roman can squirm away. Oh, how the child thrashes, his human instincts kicking in and trying to get him to go towards the surface.
It's alright though, it won't last long. Logan sings, thanking the Ocean for Roman. He won't beg for the Ocean to be merciful because the Ocean is not merciful. The Ocean will either let Roman live or She won't. It's something humans seem to fail to understand, time and time again, as they try their hardest to thwart Her will with their contraptions.
Soon Roman's thrashes go weak and the child is limp, heavy in his arms. Logan hums, rocking the child gently back and forth. His grin widens at the slits forming on the child's neck, acting as the opening for gills.
It's the only warning he receives as Roman's eyes reopen, a fiery red hue, as a piercing wail escapes his lips. The child’s soft, rounded baby teeth fall out as little rows of new merling teeth replace them. Still not full-grown teeth, but better at tearing through raw fish than a human’s dull teeth ever could.
"I know, I know," Logan croons, stroking his golden brown locks, "It'll be over soon."
Roman is not the first human Logan has seen the Ocean take as Her own. Virgil was one of the first Logan witnessed. He’d fallen overboard off a human ship, too young to know how to swim. Logan’s pod circled around his sinking figure, tails whipping with fervent excitement.
“He’s an offering from the Ocean,” Logan’s father had whispered to him, “Either he’s meant to become one of the Ocean’s children or he’ll perish and we’ll feast on his flesh.”
Virgil survived, snapping and clicking with the ferocity of a bullshark. Logan has an inkling Roman will be the same as his wails become more of a hissing, shrill noise.
His ears has elongated, tipped with small winged fins. Similar fins appear on the backside of his elbows and Logan suspects on his back as well. The most important part, of course, is when the human’s pair of tails conjoin together to become one. This is where many prove their unworthiness to be one of the Ocean’s own. They perish, a mockery of what a Mer should be; malformed and incomplete, a disgrace to the Ocean.
“Shhh, shhh, Roman, let the Ocean accept you as one of Her own, don’t fight it,” Logan continues crooning, adjusting his grip so he is only holding onto the upper half of Roman’s body. The sliver of Roman’s soul that is still human tries to use this to kick at Logan, to dislodge his grasp.
But this is hard when the tails become stiff, rigid as they become one, shimmering as ruby scales overtake soft flesh. The outerwear humans are fond of wearing tears, ripping to shreds as its unable to handle Roman’s growing unified tail. The tail itself almost makes up his original height but not quite. Roman’s tail twitches once, then several times.
“Rather an odd sensation for you I imagine, hmm?” Logan comments, tracing the edge of Roman’s finned ear fondly. Oh thank the Ocean, he never thought he’d be happy to have a child of his own until this moment.
Roman opens his eyes again, a good proper glowing red hue. “F-fishyman--Logic?”
“Yes?”
“I--I’m a fish too?”
“No, Roman, you’re not a fish. You’re like me--you’re one of the Ocean’s children now.”
“O-ooh. But why? It hurt so much!” Roman pouts, tail lashing angrily.
“That’s simply how it is, little prince,” Logan hums.
“Well, I don’t like it! Can I change back? I wanna see my mom and dad.”
“Now, Roman, you can’t do that. Your parents left you, they weren’t watching you like they should and now I will take care of you. You want to be a prince now, don’t you, Roman? Roman, you will be a prince and you’ll be so excited you’ll forget those humans ever existed, alright?”
Foolish, foolish humans. They really should’ve taught their child about the importance of names. That’s alright, Logan will teach Roman now and keep him safe.
“I do wanna be a prince, I’m going to be a prince, right?” Roman murmurs, yawning. The process of becoming one of the Ocean’s own is a tiring one. He snuggles closer to Logan, curling his tail around Logan. Something Mer instinctively do, to ensure they won’t drift away from their loved ones when they fall asleep. Logan smiles at this.
“Yes of course,” Logan soothes, “You’ll be my little prince and I won’t ever let any harm come to you.”

@lipsyncdripink said: straight to video for Ruby || Watch my muses’ memories!
[You pop the memory tape into the VCR, the TV screen becoming filled with static before the view of a tiny apartment kitchen appears on the TV screen. An older male Octoling sits at the table, an the memory seems to be shot from the third person point of view as a young Ruby enters the room....]
“Dad?”
It was midnight, and Ruby had just woken up to get a drink... Only to find her father, Akihiko, sitting at the kitchen table, a notebook of scribbled out words and logo designs sitting in front of him.
“Oh, Ruby...” he replied, exhaustion clear in his voice as he looked toward his daughter. He sat up a bit straighter in his chair. “Are you alright? Is something the matter?”
“No, everything’s fine.” the young Inktoling replied, her red eyes reflecting great concern for her father. She moved to sit down at the table, gently placing her hand on his shoulder. “But what about you? You look so tired, what are you even doing?”
“I...” Akihiko paused mid-thought, unsure of how to explain exactly what he was doing. After a few moments, he sighed lightly. “You see, your mother and I never thought of a name for our brand. And after she died I stopped thinking about it, until now...”
“Oh, oh! Can I help?” Ruby asked, her expression bright. “I had a few ideas, and I’ve been wanting to show you them!”
The Octoling smiled a little at his daughter’s enthusiasm. “Of course. Go get your notebook and I’ll look them over.”
Ruby gave him a pleased grin before dashing off to her room. A few moments later she returned with a beat-up notebook in her hands, which she turned to a specific page before she handed it to her father. His gold eyes scanned the page, a thoughtful hum escaping him. These ideas were good, but none of them really stuck out to him...
Until his eyes caught a glimpse of a small logo scribbled at the bottom corner of the page. It looked like an “A”, stylized to look vaguely like a squid and enclosed in a circle, and had a name below it.
Annaki.
“Ruby...” he began, turning the notebook so she could see before pointing to the logo. “What’s this one?”
“Oh that’s, um...” Ruby began. She was a little unsure about explaining that particular one to him, and didn’t really know how to begin. “I guess I just kinda thought. Like... It sounds like “anarchy”. And that was a running theme in mom’s designs, right?”
Akihiko looked at her. That made sense, sure, but something told him there was more to it than that.
“You look like you have something more to say about it.” he said gently.
Ruby glanced away, gently tugging at her left index finger with her right hand before she replied, “Well, I mostly thought that it could be like your names. You know, Annalise, Akihiko. Anna-Aki. Annaki...”
The was a short silence between them, before Akihiko gave a soft laugh.
“It’s perfect.”
[The memory then fades out into static, before the tape pops out of the VCR...]

Winter & Yang Parallels and Contrasts
A comparison of Winter Schnee and Yang Xiao Long, and how they are shaped by their society and circumstances.
Or a thinly veiled excuse to gush about two characters I like
[gif by 5by5brittana]
This is split into four parts:
Pre Volume 1 backstory and characteristics
Relationship with younger siblings
Parallel Journeys between V1-5 and V7-8
Rough Speculation for Volume 8
Spoilers for RWBY V8 E1-7. Under the cut because this turned out very long.
Also, take this with a grain of salt? I wrote this for fun. This really is just, me going off the deep end.
I. Childhood and Upbringing
Winter and Yang are both the eldest children of their respective families, and have spent most of their lives growing up in the shadows of their legacies: the Schnee name and the fallout of team STRQ. These legacies are tragedies, and for better and for worse Winter and Yang are in the unique position where they also know the before, the brief time their families were whole (at least on paper). As their families broke apart, Winter and Yang have felt the need to fill the parent role for their younger siblings (more on that later).
This is the curse of the parent-sibling*, in which the lines between adulthood, childhood and parenthood are all blurred together when one is still a child. Winter grew up as Willow and Jacques’s facade of a marriage slowly fell apart and Willow turned to alcohol, leaving Weiss and Whitley under the care of Jacques - a manipulative abuser - and someone had to step up between him and Weiss and Whitley. Klein, it should be noted, was the exception to the rule, as most staff reported to Jacques. Yang never had Raven, she lost Summer and for a while Taiyang after he shut down - someone had to take care of Ruby. Qrow just couldn’t be a full-time replacement to any of them
* [I believe the professional term is “parentification”.]
[RWBY Official Manga Anthology Vol. 4: I Burn]
This is Winter and Yang’s own personal tragedy, and as inspiring as it might seem from the outside - a mature, responsible child that helps parent their younger sibling - it is not at all healthy for the child in question. It does not matter if things might’ve improved later, the damage has already been done. Parent-siblings tend to become caretakers as well, and this manifests in both Yang and Winter, albeit in very different ways.
Which leads me to the next point, which is to emphasize the differences in both of these scenarios. The expectations from the Schnee name are very much a product of high-class society and Atlas superiority, which is very different from STRQ’s private falling out. Winter is roughly 7 and 10 years older than Weiss and Whitley, so she’s about 12 when Weiss (5 at the time) would become more aware of Jacques’s behavior, 17 when Willow began drinking. Yang was about 6 when Summer disappeared and the trek to the woods happened, and it is unknown for how long Taiyang shut down. Willow became seriously depressed just before Winter left for Atlas, whereas Taiyang eventually got back on his feet. Winter was abused by Jacques, Yang was abandoned by Raven.
Winter’s speech often involves doublespeak with hidden meanings, a strict deference to decorum, and a fair share of veiled (or unveiled) insults. She is closed off, and rarely engages in open physical contact. In private with her siblings or close friends, she tends to be softer, and may hug or pat on one’s shoulders. She has learnt this behavior in order to navigate Atlas society and quell her father whilst protecting herself and her siblings. Unfortunately, Klein appears to be the only staff to put the children’s needs before his servitude to Jacques, so even Winter’s interactions with Weiss and Whitley are soured by this prim, and at times, hurtful behavior; even then appearances must be kept. This is why Winter doesn’t act like a typical “Mom friend”, and why her need to take care of others manifests differently: in her conscience and willpower to protect others. Hence, she trains to become a huntress, the personification of protection, a way to help despite her difficulties expressing that need more conventionally.
Yang is open and outgoing, an easy conversationalist and very physically affectionate with her peers. She is upbeat, and also tactful at the same time. Why? Some of it has to do with her severe abandonment issues, making her more prone to bask in her connections to others. Equally important are the experience and circumstances she had growing up. She grew up in Patch, a relatively small community that is at best middle class. She had Ruby - only two years younger - to entertain and to teach, and in such a small household that also means many chores and mundane responsibilities to take on. By all accounts, Taiyang made enough of a recovery from his depression to parent well enough, and seems a fairly affectionate person himself. With all this encouragement and learnt skills, little hinders Yang from caring for Ruby and others openly and proudly. Ergo, Yang acts like a “Mom friend”.
These are Winter and Yang’s main personas, one uncaring and one unreserved. It is only natural that away from prying eyes or when put on the edge, they drop the facade and act contrary to it. For example, when Winter is angry or provoked, she lashes out and loses her composure. Usually, when Yang is angry she acts quite cold and restrained in her anger, and tries to project an unaffected persona. Alone with those she loves, Winter is more open and talkative, where Yang allows herself to be melancholic.
Yang may be open and candid, and could even be described as wearing her heart on her sleeve, but she is extremely reticent when admitting weakness or sharing her own personal grievances. Which is incredibly like Winter, though she is also taciturn in general. They have a tendency to avoid creating truly personal connections with others. They’re both used to putting on mask of strength and reassurance, and are quite adept at controlling their emotions (to a point). This is a defensive mechanism - they emulate the adults in their lives (who know the values of keeping up appearances) since they do not believe they will be taken seriously otherwise. They have internalized that no one will act on their behalf unless they offer something in return. By acting quasi-maternally to their younger siblings, they continue this act because it’s how they think a responsible adult should raise children.
[RWBY Official Manga Anthology Vol. 2: Mirror, Mirror]
The “practice” in home on their sisters developed in them the belief they should put others before themselves, even outside their family. Selfless as it may be, without moderation this behavior could be quite unhealthy. The lack of concern to themselves makes them feel lost and without purpose, with low self esteem and self-destructive tendencies.
Winter gives up the luxury of the Schnee inheritance for servitude in the army, a perfect place for someone who believes herself expendable. She says her personal feelings don’t matter, and is willing to throw down her life for others. Sounds familiar? Yang wants to become a huntress, which conveniently allows her to help others while drifting along life with no true purpose. She has very low self esteem initially, and her semblance literally benefits her taking hits for everyone else.
Intertwined with this, is a desire to find purpose, and to find value in oneself. They seek independence and a sense of control. For Winter, this meant training in the Atlas Academy and abdicating the title of Schnee Heiress. She remembers well when she could no longer rely on her father’s allowance. For Yang, it’s having a bike of her own and going out at night. She becomes protective of her appearance and long hair.
It’s worth noting that particularly a physical aspect of this independence - fighting - was something taught to them by the neglectful parents. Taiyang taught Yang to fight hand-to-hand before Beacon, and the hereditary nature of the Schnee semblance means Willow was most likely Winter’s first mentor.
Part of this behavior is also a need to escape the situation at home. With Winter that goes without saying - Jacques is abusive. Yang wants to leave the home she held together when she was a child; note her desire to travel the world, and her attempts to distance herself from Ruby so she won’t have to be relied upon even at Beacon.
In a sense, they’re both searching for the same thing - a parent to replace the ones who failed them. Ironwood and Raven both offer to be their replacement parent, at the cost of asking the children to leave with them to a new home, the one they’re leading and ruling. This doesn’t fix their family problem, and personally I believe neither Winter nor Yang full-heartily saw it as a solution, but they were both desperate enough to find anyone - anyone at all - that would take a weight off their shoulders and put them first. Yang searches for Raven, hoping she’ll find in her a mother despite everything. Fortunately for her, Qrow saved her from running after Raven prematurely. Unfortunately for Winter, James’s close friendship with Jacques meant he has known her from a young age, had observed how Jacques manipulates her and her family, and eventually offered himself as a savior from her situation at home. He had subtly groomed her into thinking the military - and more importantly, himself - was her only option to escape Jacques.
Despite this major difference, some similarities between Yang and Raven’s relationship and Winter and Ironwood’s relationship persist: the bandit lifestyle Raven offers Yang is militant and violent, similar to Ironwood’s army. Yang’s learnt conditional trust in authority would fit quite well with a bandit hierarchy built on perceived strength. Winter’s authoritarian outlook lends itself quite well to rise up in the ranks of the military.
Lastly, I’d like to point out the “inherited” philosophies of their respective replacement parents:
Raven’s philosophy: The weak die, so the strong survive on their own.
Yang’s philosophy: If I am not strong, I am weak and will be alone.
Ironwood’s philosophy: Every sacrifice is worth the cause.
Winter’s philosophy: I am not worth anything, so I can be sacrificed.
They’re all destructive mindsets, but the children inverted the implied destruction caused to others into their own self-destruction, in concordance with their shared need to put others before themselves. Part of the children’s progression will be to rise above these philosophies.
II. Yang & Ruby vs. Winter & Weiss
In the previous section I explained why Winter and Yang both act quasi-maternal and how it affected their growth and character. Now let’s examine their primary familial relationship, with their younger sisters Weiss and Ruby.
The simple truth is that much of what I said about Winter and Yang’s childhood is equally true for Weiss and Ruby, which could be explained quite easily - there’s only so much a child can do to replace adults. The important distinction is that for Weiss and Ruby someone did put them above everyone else, and that’s Winter and Yang. Consciously or by instinct, the elder sisters wanted to provide the younger sisters the safety they felt robbed off, and to give them the opportunity to grow and live as children like they couldn’t. In turn, the younger siblings put them on a pedestal and idolized them.
It is heavily implied Winter acted as a buffer between Jacques and Weiss, and was her confidant. Note how fluently they communicate their true thoughts to each other by hiding them in sneers and insults, yet drop all pretense in private and speak clearly what’s on their mind then. Winter worries about Weiss’s health and well-being, and isn’t interested in her studies and ranking; this is a deliberate choice to belie what Jacques instilled in Weiss, to put her happiness before her image. Winter mentored Weiss’s semblance training and is her harshest critic. She was Weiss’s main motivator to rebel against Jacques, and advised her to cut ties with the Schnee name like herself; she warns her of the futility in trying to reason with their father on his own terms. Winter encouraged Weiss to follow in her footsteps as a huntress, and also in her decision to figure herself out independently.
Yang, in her own words, was the one to hold everything together following Summer’s disappearance. She protected Ruby from feeling loveless and alone as she herself felt, by putting herself there where Taiyang couldn’t be. She gave her attention, she read to her and hugged her. She played with her and entertained her, and went along with every joke and scheme Ruby wanted to make. She enables Ruby to let loose and have fun, to take pride in her accomplishments and to stand up for herself. It’s important for Yang to show her support and pride in Ruby as frequently as she does, most likely to compensate the times Tai couldn’t. Among her family, Ruby goes to Yang when she is worried and afraid. Yang truly was Ruby’s best friend growing up.
Note how both Winter and Yang instilled values in Weiss and Ruby that are better than their own, and encouraged them to be better than themselves. They want them to actively search for happiness, although they themselves seem incapable of following the same advise - Winter went to a thankless job with little reward, Yang is afraid of forming friendships that are not just surface deep. The younger, prodigal sisters are assertive and have set themselves clear goals and ambitions in contrast to their elder sisters, who both prefer to follow and dedicate themselves to others.
The idyllic picture I described here is not complete. Winter and Yang may have significantly improved Weiss and Ruby’s childhood, but in their limited power as children - or perhaps their simple human limitations - there are blind spots in their relationships. There are issues the younger sisters have separate from the ones the elders tried to shield them from.
Winter still grew up in Atlas and under Jacques, and she is not immune from the dangerous influence of both. Early on, Weiss seemed to believe in similar ideas, and part of that behavior is due to Winter’s influence. Although Winter’s escape from home is understandable, it must’ve left some Weiss bitter being left behind. Winter forwent the Schnee name, where Weiss wants to change it for the better, and part of me can’t help but think Weiss’s conviction was affected by Winter leaving home.
As she grew up, Yang had two main caretakers - Taiyang and Qrow - who both experience difficulties addressing and sharing their problems openly. Yang, in turn, learnt not to share her own issues and put on a reassuring facade. She compartmentalizes, keeping her issues separate from what she shared with Ruby. But children are more perceptive than we might think, and Ruby must have picked up on Yang’s behavior and took it in. Ruby has her own version of keeping to herself - she ignores her problems and represses, avoiding the issue altogether with seemingly no healthy outlet. [x]
The narrative of the show tends to juxtapose these relationships against each other, cutting from one to the other and comparing them side by side, parallel or anti-parallel. The most obvious contrast is in their warmth: in Volume 3, Winter and Weiss are polite and reserved even privately, having lunch at an outdoor cafe. Yang and Ruby are loud and brash, playing video games and ribbing each other with their uncle. Winter pushes Weiss to confront Jacques directly, Yang seems content to support Ruby’s initiative by following her.
In volumes 4 and 5, the narrative matches the sisters in opposites: it is Yang and Weiss that are bound home and want to leave, and Winter and Ruby fighting in Mistral. Yang and Weiss overcome their personal struggles, and view their sister as their salvation, but end up finding each other first by chance (incidentally, Yang “returns” to Raven at the same time Winter returns to Atlas back to Ironwood). Meanwhile, Winter and Ruby become aware of Salem and the larger war at play.
When they are united with their sisters, this trend continues as Yang initiates the hug with Ruby and stops her nervous blabbering, and Weiss hugs Winter to stop her alarmed frenzy. Yang and Weiss reassure Ruby and Winter of their well-being.
Come Volume 7, Winter returns as a full-time character and we see how after their respective reunions, the sisters return to their preestablished roles. Winter and Yang support Weiss and Ruby in their decisions and actions, listening to their younger sisters as they did before. Now, however, the sisters are on a more even footing: Weiss is now free of Jacques like Winter, Yang acts more assertive like Ruby. As a result, the relationship is less one-sided. For example, though Winter is not as doubtful of Ironwood as Weiss, she listens to her input and divulges a secret to her, showing that despite having differing opinions they begin to see each other as equals. Yang goes along with Ruby’s plan to hide Salem’s immortality from Ironwood (and even takes it a step further when she reveals Amity to Robyn), but she’s not afraid to tell her she doesn’t feel comfortable with that decision. It’s a step up from what they had before.
In the finale of Volume 7 and the premiere of Volume 8, the bonds between sisters are challenged, and they separate from each other. Winter chooses her loyalty to Ironwood over her trust in Weiss, Yang chooses her conscience over her innate trust in Ruby. Mind, these situations are not completely the same: the split between Ruby and Yang is pragmatic and they still view themselves as united, the split between Weiss and Winter is ideological and they are on different sides of the conflict.
I’ll leave my speculation what will happen to the sisters in the latter half of Volume 8 for the last section.
II.V - Winter & Whitley
A brief aside about Whitley, would be to ask if what I said about Winter’s relationship with Weiss could also apply to Whitley. The answer is of course no, Whitley and Winter clearly have an entirely different relationship here. Frankly, pinpointing its exact nature more precisely is difficult, since the center of the Schnee narrative is Weiss and we have little interactions between the Schnees that don’t involve her. I cannot offer you a definite reason as to why the difference exists, but I have a few guesses.
I’ll assume what we see of Weiss and Whitley in volumes 4 and 7 is similar to what Winter and Whitley had, and take into account Weiss’s statement that Whitley never really liked Winter (or her). As Willow pointed out to Weiss, Whitley was left alone with Jacques, and began imitating him and emulating his hurtful behavior. Jacques took him under his wing, when Willow was at her worst, Winter away, and Weiss in the process of leaving. Deep down he understands he was being abused by Jacques, but with the cards stacked against him his damaging attitude becomes clearer - and particularly, the likely reasons he resents Winter and Weiss for.
So how come Weiss and Whitley turned out so different, and how does Winter factor into this? For starters, I’ll point out again that Winter’s influence on the Schnee household is very limited, and that humans tend to make mistakes. For her to gloss over Whitley, or to presumably ignore him, could be due to several reasons. Perhaps connecting with someone 10 years your junior was just too difficult. Maybe Jacques intervened more often with Whitley, seeing as he was younger and impressionable.
It’s difficult to tell what exactly happened here between Whitley and Winter, and I don’t think specifying here is helpful. I’ll sum up by saying that however their relationship turned sour, I lean towards the reason being human error rather than malicious intent. Family situations tend to be complicated.
III. Yang & Blake vs. Winter & Penny
Here I want to talk about more subtle parallels between Yang’s journey throughout volumes 1-5 and Winter’s journey in volumes 7-8.5. The major comparison here would be between Yang and Blake’s relationship, and Winter and Penny’s relationship.
Before I begin, I’d like to stress that although Bumbleby is clearly romantic in nature, here I’m more interested in their development separate from the romantic aspects of it. As such, it’s not my intention here to argue in favor of romantic Winter/Penny, though I have nothing against it. I view it more as a platonic relationship with some familial undertones.
I explained in the first section how Yang and Winter keep people at arm’s length, so it’s natural to wonder about the exceptions to that rule, their relationships with Blake and Penny respectively. When they meet their new partners, Yang and Winter seem mostly set in their ways, with no real tangible goal beyond wanting to help others where they can. To them, Blake and Penny are a breath of fresh air, determined and purposeful, and they’re challenged by their perspective.
To me at least, how Yang and Blake interact during Beacon is quite similar to what we see of Winter and Penny’s relationship in volume 7. It starts off as a working relationship, but the continuous presence around each other has lead it into easy affection. It’s a give-and-take of differing personalities finding common ground, though here the more apt analogy would be Yang/Penny and Winter/Blake. They begin feeling safe with one another, opening up and sharing intimate details about themselves, and the other’s opinion and well-being matter to them. They even work well together as fighting partners.
Yang tells Blake about Raven and her complicated family life, partially in an attempt to stop Blake from overworking herself. After Winter’s outburst at Jacques, she shares with Penny her vulnerability regarding her family, and tells her she can’t let her emotions take control of her. Neither Blake nor Penny accept their lessons at face value, and question those beliefs. Was Blake’s determination really like Yang’s quest to find Raven? Are Winter’s emotions truly a hindrance and Penny should follow suit? Still, their disagreements don’t stop them from caring about each other, as we see when Yang hugs Blake and Winter holds Penny’s hands.
Blake is a faunus rights activist who fights for what she believes in, and Yang admires her for it, and is also subtly inspired by her. Penny is dedicated to her role as the Protector of Mantle, and Winter is endeared by her devotion to the cause. In both cases however, this beautiful aspiration is soured by Adam and Ironwood, who use Blake and Penny’s noble efforts for their own gain.
Next both relationships experience a “falling out”. Yang fights to save Blake from Adam at the end of Volume 3, and sacrifices her right arm trying to protect Blake. At the end of Volume 7, Winter and Penny fight Cinder, and Winter sacrifices her body (and purpose as a Winter Maiden) for Penny. We have Yang and Winter, defeated and critically injured, left behind by Blake and Penny, both running away from their controlling abusers Adam and Ironwood.
There’s an interesting tidbit here about their natures as characters, as both “falling outs” hammer on a shared flaw between the couples. Yang and Blake are both afraid of putting their trust in someone else, one is afraid of being deemed unsatisfactory and the other afraid of hurting by association. Winter and Penny are both self-sacrificial, the former thinks her opinion and thoughts are worthless, the latter wishes to put all the weight of the world on her shoulders. The finales and aftermaths of volumes 3 and 7 are a cruel display of these flaws.
Yang and Winter are both injured enough to require a replacement for parts of their bodies, a robotic arm and an exoskeleton. The supplier of both limbs is Ironwood, who projects himself onto both women, “rewarding” them for selfless acts of heroic sacrifice like he sees himself. He saw Yang’s fight the the tournament, criticized her harshly for it, then heard about her noble sacrifice and told her he wishes she’d return fighting soon. He groomed Winter to be his second, scolds her when she disobeys him, and after her injury emphasizes her importance to him. It seems to me that Ironwood attempted to make Yang indebted to himself like he managed with Winter before.
The process of recovery for both women is difficult, and in Winter’s case rushed. On a purely physical level it could be argued they have recovered from their injuries, as both eventually return to the field after their recovery. If we consider their emotional state, things become trickier; though Yang was at first offered a fairly lengthy recovery period on her own terms, in Volume 4 her main motivation to recover is not for herself but for other’s sake - appeasing Tai and worrying for Ruby. Similarly, Winter’s recovery is overshadowed by Ironwood’s orders and the current situation’s time constraints.
This behavior on Yang and Winter’s part is not so strange to me, when I consider Taiyang and Ironwood’s roles in their lives. Because of Taiyang’s issues when she was a child, Yang learnt to put others before herself, particularly when it concerns Ruby and Tai. Yang’s recovery becomes less about herself and more about others after Tai subtly insults her intelligence and her “moping”. I view this as falling back into old habits, Yang learning that if Tai is put through too much then she’s taken too much space (she puts on her arm after overhearing Tai saying he has to stay to take care of her), and must compensate by putting Ruby (and in a sense Tai) first.
After accepting Winter to the army, Ironwood acts as some form of surrogate father to her. Winter looks up to him because he offered her safety from Jacques, and looks for his approval constantly. Look at her reactions when she’s scolded by Ironwood for misbehavior. Ironwood offered her asylum in exchange for subservience. When Winter is in her hospital, he first reminds her how reassuring it is to have her on his side, and then proceeds to kill a councilman for disagreeing with him. It’s an indirect threat against Winter, one carefully cultivated throughout their working relationship in the military.
Regardless, the physical recovery is only part of a larger process Yang and Winter have to go through. Volume 5 made it quite apparent Yang suffers from PTSD and emotional trauma from her fight with Adam, and Blake leaving triggered Yang’s fear of abandonment. She faces Raven for the first time, and is haunted by Blake’s mere mention. She struggles against the past - the parent she wanted to put hope unto - and the future - the hope she has in Blake.
Winter faces similar struggles in the first half of Volume 8 parallel to Yang in Volume 5. She is traumatized by the fight against Cinder, most likely with PTSD as well, and Penny leaving as she did has shook her inner beliefs. For the first time, we see her visibly struggling to adhere to Ironwood’s orders with ease, and she’s deeply concerned for Penny’s well-being. She is torn between her loyalty - to Ironwood, the parent she put her trust in - and her moral compass - to Penny, who challenged her to follow her feelings.
Coincidentally, RWBY chose to portray Yang and Winter’s stress with a shaking fist, where they were injured. Having said that, Winter displays many similar physical ticks like that before her injury, but the deliberate focus on the same tick as Yang is too great for me to ignore.
Both of these struggles are also marked by a decisive choice to take action and be assertive, which is remarkable where these two are concerned. Yang forms the plan to find Ruby via Raven and refuses her offer to join the tribe. Winter forgoes Ironwood’s orders to bring team JYR to custody, and instead relies on them to save Oscar from the Whale.
Yang’s recovery does not in Volume 5 either (nor does it end in Volume 6 for that matter), but at the moment Winter’s parallel arc is unfinished. I’ll speculate about this a bit more in the next section.
IV. Rough Speculation
So when I say rough speculation, I mean it in two different ways. One, is that I’m mostly focused on characters arcs, and they’ll be fairly abstract. Two, is that I’m fairly sure most of these parallels are accidental and not intended, so I don’t hold much hope any of these will come true. Instead, think of these as “if I wanted to make these parallels intentional, how would the story proceed next?”
One parallel I do think is intentional is between the sisters. It is the first time we observe both relationships put into the test, and the outcome of this split will obviously change the sister’s dynamic with each other. How will these two relationships compare to one another by the end of the volume, I do not know, the current arc isn’t finished yet. I can only comment on how I want and hope these relationships will proceed. Currently, I see the physical split between the sisters as an opportunity to reevaluate themselves independently of the other’s influence. And, I think this change will be positive for all of them.
Though it’s obvious Yang’s choice deeply affects Ruby and will contribute to her expected breaking point, I think Ruby will come out stronger at the end of it. Yang’s choice to take charge herself is obviously very important to her growth as a person. Given how RWBY framed their split around a mutual understanding both sisters’ viewpoints are correct, I don’t think their reconciliation will be one-sided - they will come to understand where the other is coming from, and their relationship - and team RWBY - will grow from it.
Despite the difference in circumstances, I think Winter and Weiss will echo this development as well. Jacques may be mostly neutralized, but the Schnee family won’t be miraculously healed because of it. At the moment, Weiss is facing that reality now with Whitley and Willow, and I think her arc this volume will lead her to begin healing her family in earnest. Winter will almost definitely leave Ironwood, and for the first time in her life she’ll be free from someone seeking to control her, free to follow her conscience. It will also give her an opportunity to reconcile with her family without Jacques’s influence, which ties in quite nicely with Weiss’s arc - Weiss pulling her family together, Winter letting herself be pulled to them. Weiss and Winter’s bond will come out stronger, and the Schnees will finally have a chance to heal.
You might’ve noticed I put a lot of emphasis on when and where Winter and Yang make choices for themselves, because I think these moments are vital for them to grow as a person. Starting with Volume 5, there’s a been a slow progression where Yang asserts herself more often, which culminates in her decision in Volume 8 to break away from Ruby with her own objective. Like her, Winter in Volume 7 quite often disagrees with Ironwood’s plans, yet follows them anyway because of her loyalty to him. This loyalty is no longer enough to sway her in Volume 8 when she starts disobeying his orders.
Again, I’m comparing two unfinished arcs, but I’m excited to see where this development will lead us. Having Winter and Yang parallel each other like so would really hammer home how similar these two can be beneath the surface. If at some point it involves more direct contact to drive each other, that’d just be icing on the cake. For now I’ll enjoy that their only personal interaction with each other is Yang telling Winter “[she’s] still just following orders?”, followed by a glare - hopefully this preludes a future conversation between them talking about this exact point.
I’ve already touched upon predictions related to the first two parts of this analysis, what about the third? Here we can go a bit wilder, because we already know what happens to Yang (and Blake) in Volumes 5 and 6. How would I mirror Volumes 5 and 6 with Winter (and Penny)? When I think of Yang’s recovery arc, two major scenes at the ends of Volume 5 and 6 come to mind.
The first is her confrontation with Raven in the Maiden Vault, an incredibly powerful scene where Yang properly confronts Raven and calls out her cowardice. One of the reasons it works so well is how difficult it is to realize Raven’s place in Yang’s life is not clear cut; Yang hates her for abandoning her and shirking her responsibilities as a parent, yet there is still love between them. Raven’s reaction itself is both an admission of care when she concedes to Yang, and also another failure on her part by leaving her off with the responsibility, running away again. In simpler terms, Yang reluctantly confronts someone she cares for deeply, yet isn’t on her side.
Who would be the Raven to Winter in a parallel scenario? One possibility is Ironwood, who holds a similar position to Winter as Raven did to Yang. Ironwood is an almost paternal figure to Winter, but he’s making wrong and dangerous choices, and Winter seems to realize it as well. He used her and exploited her, but also offered her safety and stability. Even after Winter defects, I don’t think Winter will want to fight him physically (if she’s capable), and would probably attempt to sway him with her words. Admittedly I don’t foresee Winter’s attempt at non-aggression to be successful like Yang, so it might come to blows anyway.
A second possibility it to put Penny in Raven’s place. Given that Penny’s also Maiden like Raven, and she’s on her way to the Atlas Vault, there’s some potential thematic parallels. Given their established relationship, I think neither would want to confront each other physically, and would rather talk instead. It’s possible here Winter and Penny will switch metaphorical roles, and it might be Penny that gives Winter the final push towards the heroes sides. It’s also possible, given Penny’s hacked plot line, that Winter will instead have to sway Penny back from whatever the hacking did to her. The last interpretation would also fit in quite well with Winter and Penny’s arc focusing on personal choice and feelings winning over.
The other incredibly important scene in Yang’s arc is the Bumbleby vs. Adam fight. Blake and Yang finally liberate themselves from Adam, Blake’s abuser and Yang’s personal enemy, and they defeat him by working together. Yang is freed of her personal demons, Blake of her literal demons, and in the aftermath of his death they mend their relationship. Their trust in each other won over strength.
If a parallel scene to the Nevermore fight would exist for Winter and Penny, I can think of three characters that could fulfill Adam’s role. Cinder already set her eyes on Penny and is fairly likely to fight her again, and in their previous clash injured Winter. It matches fairly well plot-wise, but I don’t think Cinder is enough of a personal villain to either Penny or Winter to match the same gravitas as Adam. For similar reasons, Watts, Penny’s “puppeteer”, can also fill Adam’s proverbial shoes in this imagined scenario, but I fear he’s too inconsequential overall.
Or, it could be Ironwood in Adam’s place. Ironwood seeks to control Penny (like Adam did with Blake), and acts as Winter’s personal demon (like Adam was to Yang) by continuously conditioning her to repress herself. Like the Nevermore fight, there’s a motive for them to avoid killing him, but given Ironwood’s current state of mind he might push them to that edge in self defense. Even if Ironwood’s defeat would not involve death, it would be a liberate Penny and Winter, freeing them from his control once and for all - but a Pyrrhic victory all the same. I’ll admit, this might be my favorite way to defeat Ironwood.
Coda
I’ll emphasize one last thought regarding these character arcs - it is my strong belief character progressions, and healing arcs in particular, do not have a clear and set timeline. What I outlined here are not endings, but steps in the way. RWBY seems to agree with my train of thought, and with Yang in particular we see this in her current arc: yes, she has progressed immensely from Volume 3, but the healing process does not simply end, even if it may seem that way on the surface. I approach Winter’s character in the same manner; I have high hopes of her character and as a person, but change is an ongoing process, and I’ll treat it as such.
Thanks for reading my analysis! I know it’s a bit long and messy, I’ve had to skim through some ideas that could be expanded upon, so send an ask my way if you’d like me to elaborate on anything.

Oh I just had a horrifying thought. Based on how the interaction between RWBY co and Oz went, If they ever have him and Qrow reconcile, its going to be the exact same isn't it? Him being the only one apologizing even though Qrow punched both him and Oscar.
Most likely, yeah. We have no reason to believe that Qrow would be written as more mature and open-minded than the other 8+ people involved, not after the show had him straight up lie about how Clover died. If Qrow isn’t allowed to accept some of the responsibility for a comparatively minor character, why would we think he’d accept some responsibility for the character the story hated on for three volumes, four if we count Yang’s accusations in Volume 5, and who has already been made to shoulder all of the guilt for this conflict himself?
Looking back, getting an apology for the punch was always a lost cause. The group clearly didn’t care that it happened, were slow to react when Jaune had Oscar up against the wall, Ruby took a headshot at a potentially aura-less Cordovin, Weiss arrives at the mansion armed against her brother… the group is now quite happy to excuse any and all violence against allies (trusted friends, family, political allies, etc.) provided they think they deserve it. And, sadly, we’ve seen lately that the show isn’t at all concerned with the moral nuances of these situations either. Actually, it’s not even nuance at this point, it’s straight up ignoring glaring, undeniable factors like “Qrow teamed up with Tyrian” or “Whitely is a minor your mom begged you to protect” or “Emerald was literally trying to kill Penny an hour ago.” Regarding Qrow’s situation with Ozpin, we’ve got the same problem as with Ruby: they’re both damning him for keeping secrets while they happily keep their own. Qrow kept everything else a secret from the group too, from magic existing to the war he was fighting. He kept the personal secrets of his semblance and ability to transform. He was there in the room when Ruby told those same lies to Ironwood, later absolving her (and thus himself)of guilt and continuing to help her maintain that deception, which included telling all of Mantle about Salem without mentioning her immortality. Qrow helped do to a city what Ozpin did to him, yet I have absolutely no doubt that this will be ignored. Or, if it's brought up, everyone will handwave the hypocrisy away by saying that Qrow is one of the established good guys, so it's fine if he does the supposedly morally reprehensible acts.
The problem with the Ozpin apology scene is that it builds off the feelings immediately post-vision (which are already uniform and incredibly narrow), rejecting everything else that has happened across nearly three volumes of content. It ignores the assumption that the group just needed time to cool down, that Ozpin saved their lives in the airship, that when push came to shove they repeated his choices (the biggest factor here), that they’re supposedly learning how hard it is to trust others, that they’ve now seen firsthand how powerful—terrifying—Salem really is, that they’ve told the world about her without any plan for mitigating the repercussions (what Ozpin was trying to avoid), and that Ozpin was just kidnapped same as Oscar was, helping him to both escape and turn two villains to their side (however stupid that was). But no one cares about any of it! Literally nothing Ozpin has or has not done in three volumes matters. The group isn’t grateful for what he’s done to keep them safe. The group also isn’t frustrated with how long he chose to stay away. Whether positive or negative, they have no new thoughts or feelings on the matter, nor do they think differently from one another in any regard. Notably, the apology from Ozpin comes after Ren has learned not to question the group's decisions, otherwise he likely would have taken Ozpin's side: we weren't ready for this, we made awful decisions with lasting repercussions, so are you honestly surprised he didn't want to tell us everything when this is the result?
Absolutely nothing has changed with Ren back to the status quo and everyone else has never left, so there’s no reason to think that Qrow would be any different. Especially when, beyond the Clover situation, we have the problem of Qrow ignoring that Ozpin exists, in the same way that the group mostly ignored Qrow’s existence throughout Volume 8. Does Qrow want Ozpin to come back? Does him deciding not to drink mean he’s come to terms with Ozpin’s secret? Did he see Clover as a replacement? Does he long for his mentor again like Ironwood did? Does he think Ozpin might have been able to help talk Ironwood down? Does he care whether Ozpin and Oscar made it out of Mantle? We have no answers because the most emotional work Qrow gets it silently shouting the names of his nieces at the volume’s end. That's it. Everything else is relegated to a revenge quest that disappears because Robyn (again) states that Qrow is better than the evil Clover. Does that remind us of any recent speeches Qrow gave to Ruby? Even if the show were interested in exploring the complexities of this situation and how views should have changed after months’ time to think on things and numerous, life threatening events having gone down… we have no foundation for that work. Qrow can’t easily go up and apology to Ozpin for his part in all this when, for three volumes, the most he’s mentioned Ozpin is to say that he’s a worse person than Ruby. That is by no means a hopeful or logical setup.

okay I have to do this today because even I wouldn’t do it after the godforsaken finale airs, and it’s basically my specialty and I did spend like an hour thinking about it last night while washing dishes. Definitely partly inspired by @words-writ-in-starlight‘s insightful post on everything Supernatural did wrong, and apologies in advance to all the characters for dragging them into anything related to Christian mythology:
Wei Wuxian’s parents die in a house fire when he’s 6(? I refuse to look anything up) months old
Jiangs are a hunter family I guess? That whole disaster of a family dynamic, except WWX dips out at some point to be idk an environmental activist bc at the time, that seems like the larger threat to the whole world. “Mom and Dad went on a hunting trip and they haven’t come back”, “bitch” “jerk”, 2 brothers in a beat-up old car, you know the drill
Jins are also an old hunting family, but more Men of Letters energy - they have a fancy bunker and do research and avoid getting their actual hands dirty. Jiang Yanli ducked out of the active hunting life a few years ago to be happily married to her peacock and settled down with a baby and she’s fine. We’re not going to bother Yanli. She’s safe and happy and doesn’t need to involved in any of this
so, WWX is the demon blood child developing exciting new abilities like telekinesis, mind control, exorcising demons by sheer force of will...etc, and Jiang Cheng is the Righteous Man. Lucifer, Michael, etc.
s1-3 probably proceeds more or less as spn canon...which I more or less remember...by the time they find their parents at the end of s1, Jiang Fengmian is...ugh, we probably shouldn’t kill him offscreen, I mean, we should probably meet him before he dies. I guess. Madam Yu lasts longer because I’m way more interested in her. But we do know that both Jiang parents are totally inclined to fling the boys into a metaphorical or literal escape boat and go hold the line for as long as possible, so...that’s spn energy...
Xue Yang is the one who’s like “fuck yeah, demon powers” and opens the gates of Hell, because I want him to have nice* things
*nice for Xue Yang
from characterization rather than memory, I’m 90% sure that Dean tried to hide his crossroads deal from Sam, but Jiang Cheng does it...better. I think it does come out, though. Right before the hellhounds do.
here’s where it starts to go farther off from spn canon. Jiang Cheng crawls his way out of the grave, gets stalked by a menacing presence that explodes windows for an episode, incidentally can’t find WWX...*Lan Wangji voice* “I’m the one who gripped you tight and raised you from Perdition” (a baller line then and a baller line now)...and then the next episode starts with them all awkwardly standing around, and JC is like, “ok well let’s go find my brother then”, and you think there’s going to be an mdzs-riffing JC+LWJ Roadtrip To Find WWX...and they’re immediately attacked by like a dozen demons
in fact, the first time we see WWX in s4 is here, wherein he goes toe to toe with an angel and...holds his own. that’s new and terrifying! also is leading a squad of demons??
because here’s the thing: for the last 3(?) months, there’s been war in hell
because unlike Some People Mooses, upon finding out that his brother’s soul was legally nearly-owned by a crossroads demon, heir-apparent-to-Satan!WWX went, “actually fuck that” and kicked open the door of Hell (metaphorically, not loosing any demons this time) and was like, “who do I have to beat the shit out of to get a specific crossroads contract around here”
this did not work, obv. He didn’t know until it was too late, Lilith had already snapped up the contract, etc. etc.
obviously he also tried to offer himself instead, and got rejected for some reason
Since Jiang Cheng died, however, there’s been a war for control of Hell. Leading one side, Lilith, the Original Babe, who wants to break all 666(?) seals keeping Lucifer bound and in the meantime, break the Righteous Man so Heaven won’t even have Michael’s destined host ready for the Final Battle. Leading the other side, Wei Wuxian, infamous upstart, who wants to rescue the Righteous Man and restore him to life, tear Lilith’s guts out through her nose, and also stop her from doing the Lucifer thing because Wen Qing explained that yes, that’s a Thing, and it’s Bad.
Wen Qing! I’ve decided to combine Bela and Ruby’s roles and let WQ be both the cool badass example of how demon deals can go Bad and the demon deliberately leading our heroes astray for most of s3-4. Wen Qing is a very new demon; she used to be some sort of herbalist/witch but then she sold her soul in a crossroads deal to cure her brother of some lingering illness. 10 years of happiness and then boom, hellhounds. WQ is so obviously competent, though, that they (Lilith, I guess?) immediately offers her a job, with the promise threat that gee, that’s a nice brother you’ve got there, even with his Designated Chronic Health Condition getting all relapse-y. It’d be such a shame if something were to...happen to him...
we find this out at some point in last s3 I guess? some Monster of the Week case involves WN as a witness or something, or possible next victim, and WQ shows up to be A Normal Amount Of Invested In This, while desperately trying to avoid actually interacting with her brother (who thinks she’s dead). YES, the truth comes out; YES there’s a tearful reunion
now in s4, Wen Ning is fine actually, health-wise, bc he maybe made a crossroads deal with Wei Wuxian personally, and Wen Qing may or may not have admitted that she’s supposed to be working for Lilith to get WWX ready to host Lucifer? Or potentially that comes out later, idk. Either way, she’s 100% his top lieutenant in this exciting Hell War they’re waging
[insert whatever the hell (ha) happened plot-wise in s4 of supernatural]
we obviously mix up the relationships, too, bc it’s like, *LWJ internal monologue* I’m too young to remember my brother Lucifer as he was before he Fell, but surely Wei Wuxian is his Heir and Destined Vessel in truth, for he is Charismatic and Charming and Makes Me Feel Things, with his Clearly Feigned Righteous Drive and Compassion for All God’s Creatures and - why does heat keep pooling in the lower abdomen of my vessel when I look at his lips, which I am definitely doing a Normal and Not-Weird Amount - I’m just keeping an eye out for the famed Silver Tongue, and not in any way wondering how it would feel in my own mouth -
it’s actually DEFINITELY plausible for Lucifer to still be released even if our designated Heir Apparent is using his demon powers to his full potential and no one’s lying to each other about their motives. You just need to let Lilith be more scary too, and especially bc by “no one” I mostly mean Wen Qing; the angels are still totally hiding the fact that they, too, want to jumpstart the shit out of this apocalypse. LWJ decides at the last minute that that’s a bad idea actually, gets himself discorporated to send JC to intercept WWX because he accidentally releases Lucifer, etc. etc. Oh yeah, the boys were def fighting before this, bc JC has actually fairly reasonable concerns about the sort of things WWX is getting up to in his quest to become King of Hell...
SO
...I neither know nor care what happens in s5
it does end with both Lucifer and Michael locked in the cage probably, bc I rather liked that solution. Fuck both of ‘em, basically.
I was toying with the idea that WWX also found Madam Yu in whatever hellish torment she was suffering after making a deal so her idiot son(s) would survive, and she was leading forces for him in the war against Lilith as well. If she came back to life somehow, body and all, it’d probably be compelling if she offered her own body to Michael - bc it’s her lineage! - and we’re all led to believe that she’s, uh, being a bitch and actually wants to risk destroying the world in order to destroy all demons...but then she seizes back control and flings herself/Michael and Lucifer into the Pit, because she’s just That Hardcore?
which means we’d actually have had her around and having characterization for most of s4-5, too, which would be fun
More importantly, it ends with newly crowned King of Hell Wei Wuxian appointing Wen Qing as Queen-Regent and ditching to go on an indefinite honeymoon with his new angel boyfriend (they’re going to fuck for like three weeks straight, then roll up their sleeves and go conquer Heaven in the name of free will), and Jiang Cheng gets to live out his hitherto-unknown-to-himself life’s ambition to be the sugar baby of the Queen of Hell. It’s very Hades/Persephone, except he goes back down to the underworld at least once a month. He gets his own demon squad whom he trains up in all the hunting techniques and it’s gr9. Wen Qing is reforming the crossroads deal process to make it more fair to the humans.
the end
Addenda:
it should go without saying but Jiang Yanli is definitely a recurring character, like, at least once a season there’s a filler episode where they go to Jiang Yanli’s for dinner and have to get along as a family, and also do the much easier job of defeating some sort of terrible demon that gets loose in the bunker and turns the evening into a horror movie. She’s their main research/emotional check-in person, a la Bobby, more often appearing in later seasons when there’s, uhhh, more to emotionally check in about.
Jin Zixuan is actually a perfectly competent hunter; he’s just a priss and we don’t Like him
we like Mianmian, though. Oh, I guess the official Hunter’s Guild or w/e tries to declare WWX a public enemy on account of the whole “King of Hell” thing and she’s like “actually what if you’re morons and assholes?” and joins hte team in s4 or 5? Yeah.
idk how the 3zun disaster happens in this ‘verse but I do encourage it to be happening in slow motion as a recurring subplot for several seasons. NMJ is a hunter, LXC is obv an angel, and JGY is...I wanna say one of the more human monsters, like a vampire? Or, you know, something that could be born from JGS sleeping with someone/something he shouldn’t have

Shackles 12: Protect your own
[part 11]
One thing leads to another. Pain brings grief, joy brings progress, day brings night; Jacquelyn knew simple truths like these, but she had really wished she could get her joy before night came. That didn’t seem to be the case. The tired woman sat on the Belladonna balcony. Her eyes scanned the stars that have kept her company for many years, bringing a sense of ease while her hands clasped a mug of warm tea. Blake’s mother, Kali, walked up from inside the house and poured more.
“Thank you.” Jacquelyn uttered softly. All day Kali hadn’t spoken a word to her. The older woman gave no expression, but her eyes said enough. They were upset, and mulling things over. “I’m-”
“If you’re going to apologize then don’t. There’s nothing you could say on his behalf.”
“Of..of course. I would never. I was going to apologize for myself. I’m…I involved your daughter in this. That one is on me.”
Kali looked over Jacquelyn. It just didn’t make sense to her. The girl before her sat solemnly waiting for a man who’s wracked sorrow to countless lives.
“If I wasn’t for Sun and Ilia, I would’ve denied you being here. I don’t want him near my home. He’s caused enough harm.”
“I understand. Still, I’m grateful. I know this can’t be easy for you.”
Tears of frustration welled up in Kali’s eyes the more Jacquelyn spoke to her. “Did you have a mother growing up?”
“…For a while. I lost her young.”
“I don’t know you, but I can tell she must’ve been caring; the kind of mother that would go to war for you.”
“Hehe, yeah, she was.” A tiny smile crept to her face, thinking back on the remarkable woman. “I owe her a lot in life.”
“A good mother’s only wish in life is to keep their kids safe and happy no matter what. So yeah, this isn’t easy. The thing I love the most in this world, my precious baby girl, you’ve helped invite back the very thing I failed to protect her from. I’m absolutely livid. So don’t tell me you understand. You’re not a mother.”
A lump formed in Jacquelyn’s throat. The little joy she had fizzled out. Kali’s words felt colder than Atlas winds and they had a right to be. However…a click at the door cut through all that.
“We’re home.” Blake said down stairs. Kali quickly ran downstairs. Jacquelyn put down the mug and ran too, but then, she stopped. A loud slurp came from behind her. She turned back around, gasping. Adam sat in her chair with her mug. His face was a bit pale and clothes were replaced with something a bit nostalgic.
“Hey, how you feeling? ” She said, smirking at his attempts to look cool.
“Dehydrated. Also a little stuffy.” He took off his old signature jacket. “Cannot believe this thing was still around. I guess evidence lockers really collect everything.”
“Did you climb up here?”
“Both Ghira, Blake and I all agreed that Kali is the absolute last person who should see me.” He walked towards her.
“Pfft yeah.” Jacquelyn did her best to chuckle but the smile she tried to force turned to a lip quiver while tears came automatically. Adam put her arms around her and she lost it. Her fingers clung to his shirt and wept, not caring who heard.
“Do you enjoy scaring me?”
“What did you think happened to me?”
“I don’t fucking know.” She sniffed, “so many things. I didn’t want to think you decided to up and leave but now I kinda wish that was the case. At least then I could be pissed at you for being an idiot. I held you Adam. You were so cold.”
“You off all people should know how close to death I can get. But I’ll admit it, I thought I was a goner. I’ll tell you about everything later, but first…” Adam let her go and stepped out of view from the balcony doors.
The entire Belladonna family came up stairs. Kali’s eyes were noticeably more red and her hand held Ghira’s. Blake’s eyes were also a bit puffy but much less.
Jacquelyn sighed as she wiped her own eyes. “Have we all been crying today?”
Blake chuckled halfheartedly “Looks like it. You okay?”
“Not really. I need a nap.”
Kali looked at the balcony. “…Adam, sincerity starts with eye contact.”
“Is that what you want from me?”
“No. Frankly I like not seeing you, but it’s rude to let this woman stand alone after waiting.” Kali wasn’t petty. She knew this wasn’t about her.
Adam walked into view slowly and stood beside Jacquelyn. He took Kali’s glare head on. It was actually nice to know one person in this room would definitely not hold back against him. He’s gotten used to that.
Blake looked at Jacquelyn and spoke. “Where’s Ilia and Sun? I thought they would’ve stayed.”
“Those two only stayed for about an hour. Ilia said she had to do something important and Sun tagged along with her. I have no idea where but they took an airship. They said they’d be back by sunrise.”
That was a little concerning. Blake had hoped to have everyone here for this. What in the world could possess them to leave?
“Guess this is everyone for now. Adam, we gotta do something with you. Even if you’re technically dead, things have to be different.”
“Lock me up.” He said bluntly. Everyone jumped a little from the suggestion.
“Lock you up!? Adam I made a case to keep you out of-”
“I wasn’t finished.” He interjected. “There’s already a collection of people here who know I’m alive. Those guards of yours in particular. Loyalty is easy to strain. If you just let me walk then they will resent you. Allowing them to put me behind bars covertly might give you a better chance to negotiate what to do with me later on.”
“Or you’re locked up forever without real protection. You might be at their mercy. I’m not allowing that.”
Jacquelyn nodded. “Neither am I. We didn’t get you out of one situation just to throw you back into the exact same one! Even if they work for Blake, she can’t watch over their every action.”
Ghira rubbed his beard. That was true. It wouldn’t be good for Blake to be visiting jail constantly anyways, still. “It wouldn’t be wise for Adam to go unpunished. I think for people’s peace of mind he must be detained for a while.”
“Dad! But…”
“Saber is a good man. He wouldn’t act out of line on a whim. Besides, I will volunteer personally to check on him daily.”
Kali looked at Blake’s shocked expression. “Sweetie, he is still a criminal.”
“I know, but…this doesn’t solve anything! How do you expect him to prove things are different behind a cell!?” Blake looked at Adam. “How can you be okay with it?”
“I’m not. If I see another pair of shackles again it would be too soon; but the public finding out about me is no short of a death sentence. However, I do have conditions for going along with this.”
Kali’s eyes narrowed. “Are you really in a position to discuss terms?”
“As long as this is a majority, then yes.” That wasn’t gonna score points with her but oh well Atonement or not, Adam refused to be walked all over. “First, Jackie’s home was blown up. I’d like her to stay here until it can be rebuilt. Second, I’d also want Sienna to be put in Jackie's care when she’s out of the hospital.”
Both Kali and Jacquelyn were highly confused. The maiden spoke up. “Ummm Sienna Khan?”
“Hmm? Oh, no. She’s this little girl that escaped the mineshaft with me.”
“White tiger ears? I remember a girl by you in the desert. Why me?”
“Unfortunately she’s not speaking much.” Ghira said. “Adam says you’re pretty good and patient with situations like these. Also, the child seems attached to Adam, so maybe she’ll be comfortable with the person around him.”
“Be careful though. She can get pretty defensive and violent.”
Jacquelyn squinted. “Giving me a way to focus while you’re gone, is that it? Hmph, like I’d say no regardless. Of course I’ll help her if I can.” She folded her arms. Guess she was getting single mother practice early.
“I’m glad. I do have one more condition.” He put his arm over the maiden’s shoulder and pulled her close. “I’ll go to jail, after I help Jacquelyn get through her pregnancy.”
The room went silent. Jacquelyn felt her face get hot and eyes water again. He knew. These terms weren’t for his benefit at all. They were all for her.
Ghira and Kali looked at each other, shocked by this revelation. A twinge of guilt hit Kali for the words she spoke early, but now she understood Jacquelyn’s feelings just a little bit more.
“You would send yourself to jail even knowing her condition?”
“I don’t make money and I don’t see any outcome where me being free makes it easier for Jacquelyn or those two kids. Anybody drawing the connections would be problematic to put it lightly. At least this way I’m not a complete dead beat. So, do we have an agreement?” He asked Ghira.
Blake bit her bottom lip. Right now she needs to look outside herself. She reminded herself of Yang’s parting words. “Slow down. I don’t need things done in a night. Sigh, besides, it’s not like I have a better plan.” Blake looked at her father. “It’s not unreasonable.”
“That’s not exactly the problem. I’d agree but even nine months of him being free is a lot to swallow. We simply don’t have the men to watch him or a place to keep him.”
“Yeah I don’t want him in my home of all places.” Kali added. “Now matter how you look at it, Adam is too dangerous for anyone to look after while he’s free. I can’t go on good faith where there isn’t any.”
“Mom he’s-”
“OH! OH! I’LL WATCH HIM!” Yelled a voice outside, brimming with energy.
A gust of wind blew in from the balcony bringing a glimmer of faith and dozens of rose petals. Blake’s jaw dropped. “Ruby!?”
The full fledged scythe wielding huntress grinned ear to ear. “Yo!” Ruby dashed in and stopped right in front of Blake, giving her a big hug and waving to her parents. “Busy day huh?”
Blake grabbed her leader by the shoulders. This had to be a fever dream. “Ruby, why are you here!?”
The reaper’s face went red as she started chuckling. “Hehe, so funny story…”
xxxx
“Ruby?!” Yang questioned, shouting over the edge of her ship at another ship passing by. Sure enough, her little sister turned around and gasped.
“Yang!? Why are you on a boat leaving Menagerie!?”
“Why are you on a boat docking to Menagerie is a better question!”
“I stopped by your house only to hear from Jaune that you went to see Blake for the first time in forever! You think I was gonna be calm about it? I took the first mission here I could find to have an excuse!”
Yang could not believe what she was hearing. “Rubes…but that..why!? Just why!?”
“You have a bad habit of saying things you don’t mean when you get emotional. If things went south then they might not get better.”
Moments like these made it really hard for Yang to believe she was the older sister; especially when Ruby is absolutely right. “Can you not call me out like that?”
“Why are you leaving? Don’t tell me things went up in flames?”
“N- Well they almost did, but it’s fine! We’re okay; more than okay. I had to cut things short because…I gotta do some stuff. So does she.” Ruby would have a cow if she learned Yang was pregnant. Yang wanted to tell her, but Jaune had to be first. Well…technically second, but first in her heart!”
Ruby could not believe she rushed over to Menagerie for nothing! Well at least her sister looked happy, so things must’ve gone okay. “Well, I’m happy for you! Sigh…I guess I’ll knock out this mission as fast as I can then-”
“Actually, Ruby, can you do your big sis a huge favor?”
xxxx
“And now I’m here.” Ruby rubbed the back of her head in embarrassment. “Would’ve gotten here sooner but a supply mission is a supply mission. I also checked in with Saber, was it? When I explained who I was he gave me a brief and vague update. Since I came here to mediate in the first place and Yang asked so nicely, I thought I’d lend a hand.”
“You were gonna do that favor or no favor.”
Ruby grinned. It was nice to be known so well. “Mr. and Mrs. Belladonna, I’ll watch Adam. That’s the main reason you turned the offer right?”
“Y…Yes but-” Ghira stuttered.
Kali sighed, “Do you really plan on sticking around for nine months?”
“Technically as long as he’s with me and out of sight then I wouldn’t have to stay here specially, but I can understand if you don’t want him too far away. If he’s genuine then having him help rebuild the blown up home should be no problem. I can stay in the house to watch everyone, or I’m happy to rent a place and keep them there. Ilia has a spot out of the way of people. We got options.”
Call her impulsive, but Ruby was persistent. A game changer everywhere she went and she knew it. The girl took a step back to be in the middle of the room. Her hands went on her hips. The next words she spoke were with pure confidence and sincerity.
“If you need good faith then look towards me. I love your daughter like family and I’ve always looked out for people, so believe me when I say this. Adam Taurus has nothing on me. I can take him.” Bold words but she meant them to the letter.
That confidence was felt by everyone. Even Adam felt challenged, though he had no intention of betraying anyone. His first time seeing Blake’s leader and the sister of a person he never thought would save his life, and she was trash talking him. Huh, I guess they really were related. The argument was strong, too strong for Kali and Ghira to deny. Both of them gave a look of uncertainty before nodding.
“I will cut everyone some slack and let them stay in this room tonight as long as you’re here too.” Kali said.
“Yes ma’am. I appreciate it.” Ruby gave a nod as the older woman left.
Ghira gave a smile to Ruby. “I’m glad Blake has family everywhere.” He left after his wife, leaving the rest of them to sort the rest out.
Ruby finger gunned Blake before turning around,
approaching Adam for the first time in her life. He was definitely tall. That’s for sure. “I don’t think we’ve officially met yet.”
“But I’m positive you know everything you need to know about me?”
“Eh, Blake’s not much of a talker. My sister said a few things but they weren’t exactly helpful, just nasty. You’ve done a lot to her, more than you probably know. Still, Yang fights her own battles and I guess recently she won a big one. We’ll only have a fight if you start one, deal?” Ruby extended her hand.
Adam couldn’t get a read on Ruby. She was open, yet guarded. Kinda Jacquelyn. He shook her hand. “Pretty bold to say you can beat someone you never met.”
“Really? I don’t think so. If my friends could do it years ago then me doing it now should be cake. I mean you even look like a ghost right now.” Her eyes shifted to Jacquelyn. “Congratulations by the way.”
“Thanks?” Jacquelyn grabbed Adam’s sleeve. “Can the two of us talk on the balcony in private?”
“Be my guest.” Ruby watched her new assignment get dragged away by….whatever that girl was to him. “So Blake, I know this isn’t the sweetest vis-eep!” A tight hug snuck up on her.
Blake squeezed tightly and let her stress fade
away. “That’s my incredible leader. Always coming to my rescue.”
“Awe, oh sweet hehe. Now I really know you’re stressed.” Ruby hugged back happily.
Outside, things were a little less warm and cozy. The cool breeze against Jacquelyn’s skin did little to cool her off as her hands tugged gently on the front of Adam’s shirt. Her eyes were glued to the floor while she felt his hand on her head.
“For the record, I’m not the biggest fan of all this.”
“Aren’t you the one who’s been preaching about being more than what I was? Salvation and all that?”
“I didn’t say I wasn’t proud.” She lifted her for him to see her pouting. “So you knew I was pregnant all along? Gotta admit, that makes you getting kidnapped willingly and trying to go to jail makes you look really shitty.”
“Jackie-”
“I know I’m twisting your intentions but I can’t help but feel that way okay? I mean it’s fine. I’m just the gal who took pity on you and helped for her own therapeutic needs or salvation; whatever you wanna call it. Sure we slept around from time to time but that’s what happens when you have no one else. We had no labels. Circumstances made us glorified roommates at best. I mean yeah sure, on paper I guess I did what I set out to do. You’re changing.”
“And you’re trying not to cry.” He rubbed her cheek. Jackie wasted no time reaching to hold it in place. “You’ve spent a few years trying to get me to be more direct with myself. Think you can take your own advice right now.”
“……I fucked up. I should’ve just been helping you but I did more than that. I fell for you, and I can’t say with confidence I know how you feel back because we never talked about these things. A situation like this is what I used to imagine but along the line all I thought of was us, always together.”
“So you’re basically asking me what you are to me, is that it?”
“Stupid, right?” Jacquelyn started laughing at her own insecurities until Adam wrapped his arms around her and rested her head on his chest. The sound of his heart filled her senses and calmed her.
“I thought of you every day I was trapped. To tell you the truth, I don’t feel much different from the day you found me. If anything it’s only harder for me to deny how fucked I am.”
“Idiot, that’s a world of difference, and I’m not the only one who sees that.” Jacquelyn gave a soft smile. So much between was unsaid and uncertain, but that's fine for now. He thought of her, fought for her. She did the same. Those actions were worth a billion words. Roughly nine more months of actions before life changed forever. Best to not waste them. Jacquelyn tilted her head up and leaned in, kissing him gently. The joy she waited for was finally hers as he kissed her back.
Two sets of footsteps came back up the stairs. One pair was a very exhausted Ilia and the other was a slightly less tired Sun.
“Ilia! You’re back!” Blake yelled.
“Yeah I-” she spotted the intimacy happening on the balcony. “Hmm didn’t need to see that.”
“Be nice.”
“That’s what I’ve been doing this entire adventure. Also hey Ruby. Couldn’t resist a good drama?”
“As if! I came here to keep things drama free!”
Sun guided Ilia to the couch for her to plop on. Poor girl has been traveling nonstop for at least three days now. He was tired too, but a sudden rush of energy hit him in the form of Blake giving him a running hug and a quick passionate kiss that made him laugh.
“Haha, is that you saying sorry or thank you?”
“It’s me saying you’re amazing and I love you for rolling with this so effortlessly.”
“Oh there’s effort. You’re just worth it.” He smiled, kissing her again. “I’m just happy you’re safe, but you gotta-”
“Slow down. Yeah…I’ve been told.” Blake rested her head on his chest. His heartbeat was steady and strong, like he always is. “Where did you two go?”
Sun looked at Ilia who immediately got up and left to bother the pair on the balcony, grabbing Ruby too. Sun let Blake go. The man let out a faux cough. “So umm this is probably a completely inappropriate time to ask this but…”
Blake saw him reach into his pocket and her face immediately felt like fire. “Wait!” She frantically grabbed his wrist before he could take his hand out. “I know I asked but you could’ve lied!”
“Hey! I was actually trying to get things prepared back in Vacou but people started getting abducted. I know I just talked about you slowing things down and this isn’t the first time we’ve discussed-”
“Yes!” Blake could see the goofy and confused smile Sun was forming. It only flustered her more. “Don’t be surprised. Listen, it was always gonna be a yes. I’m still going to say yes; especially with all that’s happened. Lately it feels like I’ve been putting off things in my life for things I want in my life, but…you are someone I always want. Even if I don’t say it all the time.”
“I know that. It’s okay. Equality is busy work. It is your dream.”
Blake blushed, “So is marrying you. When this situation gets sorted out and dealt with, can you ask me then? You’ve given all your attention through this. I want to give you all of mine when.”
Drat! How could that feel so bittersweet sweet and yet appropriate? Sun knew his face was red too. Blake didn’t reject him by any means but the moment of courage was dashed! Guess that was the point. Typical Blake. Nothing typical about her. Sun let go of the ring in his pocket and chose to hold Blake’s face, staring into her eyes. How could they be so determined one moment and bashful the next. Honestly…
“My future wife is so ridiculous sometimes.”
“I think that’s what my future husband likes about me.” Blake smirked, “I love you.”
The two shared a kiss, taking a moment for themselves.
Ruby smiled from outside and looked at the others. “Okay, I know there’s more of a reason for nabbing me, because that pretty moment was happening no matter how many were around.”
“I brought you out here because the four of us plus Sun are about to keep a secret.” Ilia put her back against the railing, her head looking towards the stars. “Sobek, I handled it.”
Jacquelyn went bug eyed. “What? H-How?”
“Talked to the victims here, Vacou, and Adam briefly. If I would’ve gone in with you all then I might’ve recognized him. He did work in Atlas after all. Anyways it’s dealt with and you don’t have to worry about any of those victims talking. They already wanted to forget the ordeal so adding funds was icing on the cake.” Ilia stared at Adam with soullessness
“I know, you didn’t do it for me.”
“Oh how I wish that were true. Let’s make things clear right now, I’m so pissed at you. If you weren’t injured then I’d throw down right now. Blake never told you this most likely, but near my house I gave you a grave. To me you deserved at least that much; you kept me alive and going for a time. As much as I now hate some of the things I know how to do, I was fortunate you taught me them because those skills help people.”
Adam watched as Ilia took her pointer finger and pressed it against his heart. He could feel her shaking.
“If you ever want my help again then you will keep me in the loop at all times. I was there before and after Blake worked beside us. I had every right to know about you being alive as much as she did.” Ilia would never admit it to anybody but as much as she was crushed when Blake fell for Adam, she couldn’t help but feel angry when both began undervaluing her contribution. Like they say, three is a crowd.
Adam removed Ilia’s finger and nodded. “Hehe, I can accept those rules.”
“What’s so funny huh? Ugh, you really know how to tick a person off.”
“Nothing. Just…everyone is mad at me for something different. Hard to keep track of it all. Guess being a leader was doomed after all. I don’t get any of you. I can’t help but laugh at myself.” He chuckled to himself.
The strange humor of it all caused Jacquelyn to join in quietly while Ilia rolled her eyes and let things be as they were. She said her peace. Ruby though, she couldn’t help but look at the three of them, Adam specifically. There he was, a person recently beaten to near death, laughing at his own past mistakes in a world that didn’t want him.
“Hmmm I don’t get it. What was scary about this guy?”

4x14 Thoughts
I touched on this before, but context fucking matters. Even though it erased Annie's class & Ruby's race while using Beth's momness and whiteness as a shield, the speech in 1x02 works because it's life and death. It works because these women have just been thrown into this scary world and Beth makes a desperate but savvy (she picks up on Rio being more than just a gangbanger and appeals to his business side) plea. She uses what she can (Annie has never brought orange slices to any game ever, let's be real) and saves the day. And yet we see how terrified she was even after it worked. IT WAS AN UNREAL SITUATION THAT FELT REAL. Beth's recent "boss bitch" moments do not work because it's just her fully leaning into the smug entitled white lady role. I feel like too many fans ignore 2x13-3x02. The threat of Rio (and the FBI) was GONE as far as Beth knew. But she decided to do crime. Ruby was stealing from her workplace. Beth was putting Dorothy and Lucy at legal risk by using her store and her work, respectively, to commit crimes without telling them. That's who Beth is. So reframing her actions in S3 & S4 as simply reactions to evil Rio trying to ruin her life not only removes Beth's agency. It is also hollow. Because Beth has zero problem with crime—stealing Gayle's business, bribing a city official, hiring a hitman, setting up an innocent man to be a murderer, making Dean "sell" a hot tub to Mick, selling counterfeit purses, blackmailing men into buying those purses. Beth has a problem with not getting her way. And that's not enjoyable to watch. This is not me saying Beth has to be likeable as in a "good" person. But she has to be likeable to watch. Mary Pat is a total weirdo with very questionable morality, but she's enjoyable to watch. Vance is fucking creepy as shit, but he's enjoyable to watch. And while the show gave both those characters some dimension, it never portrayed them as characters we should unabashedly cheer for. That's not how they write Beth. They still—four fucking seasons in—want us to see her as a mom just trying to survive. But that's not the story plotwise that they have chosen to write. And the fact that Beth's "wins" are almost always at the expense of other women or POC is an added gross factor.
The show needs to make up it's mind about the monetary situation. Either things are dire and they are saving every penny to "escape" to Nevada. Or they have enough money to refurbish Sweet P's and buy Kenny an iPad.
Detroit city council is by district. Why do they keep referencing Ward 5?
Nice of the show to have Dave & Phoebe literally walk thru the situation. Super FUN! that the women who have been in this for years (per date revealed in 4x13) still don't understand how it works. The only way I like this scene is if it is a meta commentary about how the majority of the show stans have never understood how any of the crime aspects work 🧐 And I see that the show is yet again ignoring Turner's whiteboard and everything else implied about Rio's business dealings in S1.
Phoebe's no Turner, but I've never disliked her. She was really good in this episode, but the Phoebe/Beth stuff from stans is annoying. Why are people so into ships where Beth is awful to the other person and yet the other person is willing to risk things for Beth? Wait...I think I answered my own question.
So much wasted time on these MRA guys. I guess they don't need to be ~mysterious~ and I love (I don't) the casual misogyny in all their scenes. Preemptive GTFOH: I know—believe me, more than I want to—that men like this exist. I know it is realistic. But, again, as I mentioned before, the show is more than happy to ignore all types of realism to make the story they want to tell work. So don't tell me that this is simply a reflection of society. Jenna & Co are choosing to write this storyline in this way and she thinks it is fun and comedic.
The show is about the 3 women and anyone asking for more screen time for Rio is a misogynist. One minute spent on Annie's new shitty white male love interest popping her pimple = crickets.
The show is about the 3 women and anyone asking for more screen time for Rio is a misogynist. Dean having the reasonable response to Beth running for city council while she dismisses his legitimate concerns = crickets.
And, btw, Denise doesn't need secret insider information. Even if Dean's police records are sealed—why tho?—the two extremely visible daytime raids on the family businesses would have been on the news. And—gag!—Beth's visit to Denise was hella stupid. Denise is not a criminal, like the girls were in S1, so she has no narrative reason not to call the cops on Beth & her "thug." It was a shallow parallel and just another example of Beth needing a man to handle things for her.
I mentioned in my 4x13 thoughts about how the Sweet P's "fun and empowering...unlikely feminist statement" is bullshit. The girls, specifically Ruby, spent a lot of time judging the dancers. Beth straight up mocked Krystal's voice. They didn't care about implicating them in crime or costing them their jobs when they set up Gene to take the fall for the money laundering. They only "care" now because they need them.
Annie & Nancy's scene would have been nicer if Annie didn't imply that Greg(g)'s cheating was Nancy's failure. Again, they could have had them talk about the cheating and difficulty that Nancy went through as an example of a hardship she overcame. But they CHOSE to have Nancy explicitly frame the business disaster as a personal failing. So having Annie respond with the infidelity doesn't come across as tough love. It comes across as needlessly callous and victim-blaming.
This is long already, so I'm not even going to get into the Beth & Rio conversation at Sweet P's.
Ugh, Rio & Nick. So fucking dumb. Where was Nick before all of this? Why is he flexing his muscle now? With what we've gotten of his characterisation & attitude, are we to believe that this is the first time in 20 years that Rio & Nick have clashed? I would think that he would have been very concerned and involved when Rio drew the attention of the FBI. But Nick was nowhere to be found. (Because these writers don't understand the difference between retconning and world expansion.) Although I did get a chuckle when Nick said, "You think you'd have any of this?" while gesturing to Rio's usually empty bar.
Yet again, no cameras in an area that would most likely have cameras. And white woman Beth implicating gangs (which to cops = Black & brown youth) with her "broken windows theory" scare tactic is disgusting.
Caribbean flair and Mahalo. I'm so goddamn exhausted at this point.
Hello, Random Bitch Wife. FUN!
Hey, speaking of context matters....that entire last scene Beth is actively working with Phoebe & Dave to send Rio to prison. Romance!!!

Febuwhump 6: Insomnia
Alternate Prompt: Truth Serum
This one was co-written with the incredibly amazing @reesiereads!
Summary: While cleaning out the attic of an old mansion, Louie finds a golden amulet. It’s just his luck that it turns out to be cursed.
Trigger Warnings: violence, burning, self hatred, and brief suicidal ideation
1925 words
Looking around the dirty mansion, Louie found himself disappointed. There was nothing of worth around anywhere, not even the creepy, old attic.
“The Manor is better then this place,” he grumbled as the family picked through the boxes in the attic, “and that’s full of deadly artifacts!”
“What did you expect?” Huey asked him, glancing up from an old book he was flipping through, “no one’s lived here in centuries, and they probably took all of the valuable stuff with them when they fled the local wildfires.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he mumbled, “but not even a penny?”
Then he saw it: a golden chain hanging loosely out of one of the many boxes around them. He could tell it was real too, with the way it shined as light filtered in through the small window at the front of the attic.
Huey trailed his eyesight, before frowning, “Louie I don’t think you should—”
“It’s gold, Huey! I’m not about to just pass that up.”
Walking over to the box, he carefully pulled on the chain. It revealed an amulet, made of real gold with a giant ruby at the bottom. “Oh my god,” Louie said, “do you know how much this is worth? Why would somebody leave this behind?”
Huey came to stand next to him, looking annoyed as he watched Louie slip the necklace over his head. “Probably for a good reason. Seriously, you shouldn’t mess with it.”
But it was too late; as soon as Louie placed it over his head the ruby began to glow a bright, blood red. He tried to tug it off, but the golden chain burned his hands, sticking to his body like glue. He met Huey’s eye, and while the duckling looked concerned, he also seemed smug, like he was proud to have been right.
Not being able to stop himself, Louie felt his mouth open and force out words he had never wanted to say out loud.
“I don’t think you care about me.”
Louie clamped his beak shut.
Why had he said that? Why had he said that?
He almost missed Huey’s quiet “...what?”, but it was there all the same.
“I don’t — I didn’t...” why had he said that? “I don’t think I’m worth anything.”
Realizing it must have been the necklace (oh god, it was cursed, wasn’t it), he clutched at it desperately, ignoring the searing pain. He had to get it off. He had to shut up.
“What’s going on?” Dewey asked, having noticed the commotion. The rest of the family followed him over.
Panic gripped him, tight and suffocating. Don’t say anything else, he begged himself. Just stay quiet.
To his horror, he found himself looking directly at Della. “I don’t think you love me.”
He watched in horror as her face fell, eyes squeezing shut as if she were forcing herself not to cry. Great, now he had hurt his brother and his mom. What was next? Would the necklace force him to hurt each family member one by one? Louie didn’t know, and he was terrified to find out.
“I-I think it’s the necklace,” Huey stuttered, hands clutching the book in his hands tightly, “it must be cursed somehow.”
Then get it off!” Dewey yelped, looking at Della with large eyes of concern.
Before he could stop himself, Louie looked directly at his second oldest brother. “I think you love Mom more than me.”
He felt sick. “Stop,” he whispered, as if he could make the curse go away by will alone. As if his own vocal cords would listen to him. “Stop, god please stop—” he cried out as the burn only seemed to increase.
“Let go of the blasted thing, lad!” Scrooge all but demanded.
Reluctantly, he did as he was told, whimpering as it only seemed to bury itself deeper against his feathers.
“I think you see me as a nuisance,” Louie blurted out.
He could feel tears gathering in his eyes, hands clenched around his hood. He didn’t pull it up though, it wouldn’t change anything. Nothing could make him feel better until he got the stupid necklace off.
His hands hurt, feathers all burnt away to reveal a chain pattern against his skin. The pain at least gave him something to focus on, an escape from his own mouth and thoughts.
He knew he was hurting his family, that his words were cutting new wounds. That was why he had never said anything, all too aware at how awful his thoughts could hurt.
Huey stood off to the side, the book he had been clutching earlier now on the floor. He must have dropped it at some point.
Della stood to his right, a silent Dewey clutching her shirt. She was crying now, hot tears rolling down her cheeks.
Scrooge stared at the amulet, his brow furrowed. Louie wasn’t sure what he was thinking, but he doubted it was good.
His Uncle Donald just looked heartbroken.
“I think all I do is hurt people” he mumbled, tongue and beak moving of their own accord.
The truth was supposed to set you free. That's what all the wise old people said, at least. Them and the children’s cartoons that had to teach the kids good life lessons.
But as Louie kept going, words forming in his throat against his will, he’d never felt a greater weight over him.
His family looked so upset. Of course they did. Him and his stupid thoughts, things they were never supposed to hear, could only serve to cause other people pain.
And the words wouldn’t stop coming.
The amulet still wouldn’t budge, and he was beginning to be scared that it never would.
“I — uh—” Louie could feel another confession trying to force its way up his throat, and while he had no idea what it was, he would do anything to stop it from coming out. He grit his teeth, feeling his eyes start to sting from unshed tears.
It wasn’t fair, why was it always him? No one else (besides his Uncle Donald) were constantly getting hurt or screwed over by evil magical artifacts. No one else had ever been forced to reveal their darkest secrets and insecurities in front of their whole family. No one else had to deal with hurting their whole family against their will.
He could feel a sob rising in the back of his throat, threatening to spill out from his mouth just like his awful secrets. Louie hated that he cried so much, that he was so sensitive. The rest of his family was strong and capable, but all Louie ever managed to do was mess things up.
It went on for what must have been forever. Secret after secret forcing its way out, each one worse than the last.
Nobody was ever supposed to know any of this, but now there was no way to stop it. The amulet wouldn’t let him stop until every fear and insecurity had been spoken.
Huey had been right. Huey was almost always right. And Louie, true to his stupid, selfish nature, hadn’t listened.
Huey was so… ugh. He was so much smarter than Louie was.
Another confession spilled out, followed by a sob that he’d done everything to repress.
His family looked torn between standing there and actually trying to do something. He wouldn’t blame them for just standing there, though. After all he’d said, what he was still saying, he’d hurt them too deeply.
He didn’t deserve their help.
“I’m s-sorry,” he choked out, hiccuping as another sob wracked his body. I can’t s-stop I—”
I can’t stop hurting you.
His hands were still sensitive from the burns, and they stung painfully as he wiped tears away. The pain gave him a focus though, an escape from his thoughts and the awful situation.
He could hear someone crying, but it was hard to tell who with his vision swimming. It was getting hard to breathe between his sobs, his chest burning with the need for more air.
It hurt, everything hurt.
It hurt so much that he barely even registered it when it stopped.
A final confession — “Sometimes I think I’d be better off dead.” — and that was it. The glow of the ruby dimmed, the chain suddenly feeling much looser around his neck.
Louie, hands shaking, all but ripped the amulet off, sinking to the floor in defeat. It was off. But his family knew everything.
He didn’t look up. He couldn’t bear to see their hurt or disappointed looks, so he just kept his eyes squeezed shut as he sobbed.
For a long time, it was the only thing he could hear. His cries — and they sounded pathetic, just like him — filled the room; he’d long since given up on trying to muffle them.
Then there were arms wrapped around his torso.
He flinched, opening his eyes slightly to look behind him. His vision was still blurred by tears, but he could make out the shape of Huey hugging him from behind. The older duckling was shaking slightly, but his grip was tight, as if he could hug all the awful thoughts out of Louie’s head.
“I—” Huey floundered for the words, seemingly unable to find the right thing to say. Louie wasn’t sure what he could say.
Gripping onto his brother’s arms tightly, Louie ignored the sharp sting of his burns. He felt like an imposter, getting a hug and having someone so worried about him. It felt great, but it was also wrong.
He didn’t deserve this.
Della was the first to find her voice. She kneeled in front of Louie, even as Huey continued to cling onto him. “I am so, so sorry,” she said, cupping his face gently.
Louie sniffled, but didn’t pull away.
“I had no idea you felt like that — I don’t think any of us did — and I’m so sorry I didn’t notice.”
“No, mom—” he said, looking at her through his tear-blurred vision, gasping for breath as he tried to calm himself down.
She hushed him, wiping his tears. “It’s okay,” she promised, “You don’t have to say anything.”
He nodded as best he could while she continued to hold him like that.
“I do care about you,” Huey finally said, arms still wrapped around him tightly. “I care about you so much, don’t you ever think that — that I don’t.”
Louie cried harder at that, leaning into his brother’s embrace, Della taking a step back so they could have a moment.
“Are you su—sure?” he choked out. Ordinarily he never would have let himself look so absolutely stupid and vulnerable and insecure, but the amulet had done most of the work for him.
“Yeah,” Huey said, “Never surer of anything. I love you so much. You’re my brother, Lou, how could I not?”
Slowly, the rest of the family packed in for a group hug. Even Uncle Scrooge, who really wasn’t that big on physical affection like this. But he was a part of it anyway, and Louie tried to take some comfort in that.
“We’re gonna be okay,” Uncle Donald said quietly. “I love you, Louie. We all do. And we are going to be okay.”
Weakly, Louie nodded. As little as he believed it, maybe they would be. Maybe he could apologize for all the awful secrets he’d been forced to spill. Maybe they’d forgive him.
But for now, all he could do was sit in his family’s embrace and cry.

The Malachite's Shady Past
Canon to 'Both of Them, and Only Them'
Melanie and Miltiades are on edge as the team arrives in Mistral. A past they would rather forget becomes unavoidable, and Ruby learns more about her girls than any of them expect.
AN - When I ended 'Both of Them, and Only Them' I stated that I may make one-shots in this continuity if I can think of scenes worth exploring. This is one of those one-shots.
---
Jaune, Ren, Nora, Ruby, and the Malachite twins followed Ruby’s uncle Qrow out of a tunneled walkway and into a crowded marketplace filled with as many cheery, colorful people as it was filled with dark corners for slightly shadier transactions. “The City of Mistral.” Qrow introduced the city the group with an exaggerated flourish with him arms.
“About time!” The ever boisterous Nora proclaimed. “Seriously, whose idea was it to walk again?” she continued, staring pointedly at Ruby.
Ruby nervously rubbed the back of her head. “Well, it’s not like there were any airships out of Vale at the time… and I seriously though it would only take a few weeks.”
“At the same time,” Melanie picked up, “you really thought it would only take a few weeks?”
“Hey! Aren’t you supposed to be on my side?” Ruby frowned.
“Maybe once my feet stop hurting,” Melanie teased.
“Oh, well…” Ruby stuttered. “I could, um… give you a foot massage? Isn’t that a thing couples do? Or would that be weird?”
Qrow interrupted, “what’s weird is you discussin’ that right next to the rest us. Save it for the hotel.”
“Right,” Ruby nodded, turning bright red.
“Sooo…” Jaune cut in, desperate to change the subject, “how much further to Haven Academy?”
“Almost there,” Qrow informed them, “but I figured I’d take you kids on the scenic route.”
“But I’ve already got my tour guides!” Ruby boasted proudly.
“You do!?” Nora replied loudly.
“Mel and Miltia were born here,” Ruby confirmed.
“Really?” Jaune asked, his brow cocking. This was the first any of them heard of it their entire hike here.
“Well, yes,” Miltiades answered tentatively.
“But it’s been a few years since we left,” Melanie continued for her sister.
“Years? Musta left pretty young,” Qrow deduced. “Are you orphans or something?”
The twins’ gazes deterred, clearly uncomfortable with the line of questioning.
“That was a little blunt, Qrow,” Ren lightly scolded in his calm tones, less to reprimand Qrow and more to support the twins’ silence.
“Sorry,” Qrow played along.
The group continued forward, talking about the city. Seeing the chance of a quiet moment, Ruby fell behind a bit for a small semblance of privacy with her girlfriends. “Hey, are you two okay?”
“We’re fine, Ruby,” Melanie smiled.
But Ruby could tell it was a little forced. “You know you can talk to me, right? Even if you don’t… it’s okay to not be okay.”
“I promise, Ruby, we-” Melanie was suddenly stopped by Miltiades. The twins had one of their infamous silent conversations that ended with Melanie sighing. “It’s… a lot to take in. Being back here. Maybe we’ll elaborate later, but not in the street.”
“Whatever makes you feel comfortable,” Ruby assured. The young redhead then decided on a joke to break the tension, “Maybe we can talk while I practice my foot massage?”
It succeeded in bringing a small smile to Melanie’s and Miltiades’s faces. “We’ll see, Gem.”
A few streets later another shadow fell over Miltiades face. “What is it now?” Ruby asked, following her girlfriend’s line of sight to some nearby graffiti in the shape of a spider. “What’s that?”
The twins shared another concerned look. “It’s a gang sign,” Miltiades finally answered.
“And not a good one,” Melanie added. “We should probably catch up with the rest of the group.”
The twins cast a sly look backwards, looking for anyone following them. To their relief, they spotted no one. Unfortunately, that was only because their tail had already broken off, eager to deliver the information they had gained.
---
Things at Haven Academy did not go nearly as well as Qrow had hoped. A fact that sent the aged Huntsmen to the bars while everyone else went back to their hotel. It was a spacious booking, with rooms aplenty and a common area for the group. The twins and Ruby picked a room to settle in, and after months camping as a group on the road, they cherished the opportunity to cuddle alone behind closed doors.
Ruby was the first to break the silence. “So… you two don’t have to say anything… but we are alone now?”
Melanie sighed.
Ruby winced. “I’m sorry…”
“It’s not you,” Melanie assured. “It’s just not happy memories.”
Ruby shifted until she was sitting up with her back against the headboard. “Do you not like being back…?”
Melanie was unsure how to respond. Miltiades ended up being the one to answer, “we like being with you, wherever you are.”
“I’m sorry if I seem pushy,” Ruby continued. “It’s just that when Qrow said… what he said… it made me realize I don’t know anything about before you moved to Vale.”
“You’re right,” Melanie snapped, “you are being pushy.” The brasher twin suddenly stood up and marched out onto the room’s private balcony.
“Mel!” Miltiades called after her sister. Ruby shrank and emotionally folded in on herself, making the milder twin frown. “She’s not mad at you, okay?”
“She seems mad at me,” Ruby countered.
“Let me go talk to her,” Miltiades offered, standing up herself. “We’ll be right back.” Miltiades didn’t like leaving Ruby alone in her poor mood, but this conversation was one the twins had to have, sooner rather than later. She stepped out onto the windy balcony, noting how much ambient noise the door managed to block. She saw her sister leaning on the railing by the far edge. “Are you okay?”
“I just… wasn’t expecting this to come up,” Melanie explained.
“You thought we could get into and out of Mistral without it ever coming up?” Miltiades pointed out.
“Well, I didn’t know how long we’d be here!” Melanie defended. “I was hoping for an afternoon, maybe. In and out and on to the next place…”
“Even if it was years down the road, she would have asked us about our history eventually,” Miltiades argued. “And… I think she deserves to know.”
“I know that,” Melanie sighed. “But what do we say? ‘Our mom is a dead crime boss and the Spider gang are the ones who killed her’?”
“Maybe not be so blunt…” Miltiades added nervously. “But we have to say something. With everything else going on… the last thing she needs to worry about is us.”
Melanie sighed again, her face dropping into her hands. “Alright… just… give me a minute to mentally prepare.”
Miltiades nodded and reentered. Ruby hadn’t moved, and her mood hadn’t improved either. She looked up, quickly noting that Miltiades was alone. “So she is mad at me…”
“No, it’s just a difficult subject,” Miltiades assured. “She just wants a minute to compose herself.”
Ruby nodded. Miltiades sat back on the edge of the bed, the anticipation for the coming conversation raised her nerves as well.
All the pair could do was stay silent while they waited. And waited. And waited… Eventually, Ruby broke the silence, “did she say how long she would take?”
“No,” Miltiades shook her head, “but it shouldn’t have been this long…” The timid twin slowly stepped back out onto the balcony. The empty balcony. Instead of Melanie, there was only a piece of paper pinned to railing where she had been a moment before.
“Oh no…” Miltiades bolted over to the paper. Reading it made her heart drop. She gazed hard into the darkening surroundings as dusk turned to night. “MELANIE!”
The shout had Ruby dashing out onto balcony. “What’s wrong?” Ruby’s trained eyes were distracted a glint on the balcony floor. She knelt down to pick up a tranquilizer dart. She stood back up and turned to Miltiades. “Where’s Melanie?”
Miltiades didn’t speak, she only held out the paper. A note signed with the image of a spider.
Miltiades Malachite,
The Spider’s Web
One hour
Bring the redhead
---
Ruby and Miltiades gathered the others in the common room to update the lot. Nora and Ren looked concerned. Jaune looked angry. Qrow was conspicuously absent.
“Why on earth would they do this?” Nora asked after the explanation.
“I don’t know,” Miltiades answered.
“Are you certain?” Ren followed up. “The two of you have been nervous since we got to the city.”
“Does this have anything to do with what you two wanted to talk to me about?” Ruby tacked on.
Miltiades bit her lip. “We do have a… past, with the Spiders. But that’s all it is! The past!” she quickly assured. “I really don’t know why they would attack us now! They have no reason too,” Militades turned to her girlfriend before adding, “I promise.”
“And what about the part where they want Ruby to come?” Jaune pointed out. “That Tyrian guy wanted to kidnap Ruby. What if this is about our enemies?”
“We need Qrow,” Nora added.
“But where is Qrow?” Miltiades questioned.
It was Ruby’s turn to sigh heavily. “If he’s not back already, he’ll be no help by now.”
“We have to do something!” Miltiades urged. “What will they do to her if we don’t show up!?”
“So what, the five of us just go our own? To face Mistral’s most powerful street gang?” Jaune shook his head.
“And why not!?” Nora jumped up. “Just a week ago we killed a massive, terrifying Grimm no one else had ever even seen before! We can handle a few thugs!”
“I… wasn’t serious, Nora,” Jaune clarified.
“Well I was!” Nora stood her ground.
“We needn’t fight,” Ren pointed out. “We merely need to secure Melanie and escape.”
“But not fighting is boring,” Nora whined.
“Nora,” Ren lightly scolded.
Ruby crossed her arms. “Miltia is right, though. We have to do something. And Qrow’s not gunna be able to help, so it has to be us.”
Jaune groaned. “This is a bad idea. But I don’t think we’re gunna find a better one, so… let’s go.”
---
It didn’t take long to find The Spider’s Web. It was a bar in one of the city’s lower tiers, mainly populated by people who had no where else to go and staffed by the Spider Gang itself. It was more a base of operations hidden in plain sight rather than an actual drinking establishment. A fact made all the more clear by the small army of people guarding the entrance as the group approached.
A girl near the front took a step forward to greet them. “You can stow the grimaces, we just wanna talk.”
“Talk!?” Miltiades shouted, “and what, kidnapping my sister was a polite invitation!?”
“Would a cordial letter have convinced you to come?” The girl pointed out. “Look, we don’t want a fight. You’ll all be free to go after my boss has said her piece. Scout’s honor.”
“Like you’ve ever been a scout,” Jaune shot off.
The girl gave him an amused look. “I bet that sounded a lot more macho in your head, huh? But I get it.” She turned to Ruby, “as a show of good faith, we’ll even let you keep your weapons. But only you two are coming in, and after my boss says her piece this will all be over. No bloodshed.”
“You’ll think we’ll let you just separate us!?” Nora shouted.
The girl rolled her eyes. “I think you don’t have much room to negotiate. We’ve been generous enough letting you keep your weapons. You want the girl back, these are rules.”
Ruby thought for a moment before speaking up. “Two questions.”
“Can’t promise I’ll answer, but go ahead,” the girl conceded.
“Do the names Cinder or Tyrian mean anything to you?” Ruby asked first.
The girl flashed a confused look. “No?”
“And Salem?” Ruby questioned next.
“Isn’t that a movie character?” The girl responded, scratching her head.
Ruby searched the girl’s eyes for any hint of a lie, and found none. “Alright, we’ll follow your rules.”
“Are you sure, Ruby?” Ren asked.
“Just be ready,” the young leader told them. “If you so much as hear a plate drop, all bets are off.”
“We’ll be sure to give the clumsy waitress the night off,” the girl joked. “Come on, you two.”
---
Miltiades and Ruby were led into bar. It was full of Spider gang members, barring one familiar figure seated at a table near the back wall. “Melanie!”
The captured twin spun around at the sound of her name. “Miltia? Ruby? What are you two doing here?”
“Getting you, of course!” Miltiades hugged her sister as though she would vanish again if she let go.
The formally trained Ruby was the one to ask, “are you okay?”
“A little lightheaded from whatever they shot me up with,” Melanie answered. “Other than that, they’ve been treating me surprisingly well. But how did you two find me?”
“We were invited,” Melanie told her. “Apparently, the boss wants a word.”
“With us and Ruby?” Melanie found it hard to believe. “Why?”
“‘Why’ is a good question,” Ruby crossed her arms. “For example, ‘why’ do you two have a ‘history’ with a gang?”
Melanie’s fists clenched. The softer hearted Miltiades once again had to pick up the slack. “Our mother was a big player in Mistral’s underworld. The Spider’s were her lifelong enemies.”
“You told Yang you didn’t get involved in stuff like that,” Ruby reminded them.
“And we don’t!” Miltiades assured.
“When we were children, we didn’t know any better,” Melanie explained. “As we grew older, we realized we didn’t like watching over our shoulders all the time. People around us were constantly being hurt.”
“Or doing the hurting,” Miltiades added.
Ruby’s stance softened as she took in the story. “So… you two moved to Vale alone… and a moment ago you said ‘was’ when talking about your mom…”
“She disappeared,” Melanie elaborated. “Around the same time, the Spider’s started combing the streets. They were even spotted in the upper tiers, all the way up to the academy. We didn’t so much move to Vale as we escaped there.”
“We didn’t want to believe the rumors at first,” Miltiades picked up. “But the longer without so much a letter… it’s pretty obvious what happened.”
“I’m disappointed, girls. I thought I taught you better…”
The voice made the twins freeze. Ruby turned a curious eye to the source. A broadly built woman stepped out of the back room wearing a simple yet clearly expensive ball gown with open shoulders showing a spider tattoo on one of them. She approached the table with a wide smirk on her face. “Always confirm the body.”
The spell broke, and Melanie leapt up from her seat with an angry “You!?”
The woman let out a single chuckle. “Me.”
Ruby was utterly lost. “Who?”
Miltiades finally unfroze herself, though still couldn’t tear her eyes away from the Spider’s boss. “That’s…” she couldn’t finish the sentence.
The woman turned to Ruby to introduce herself. “My friends call me Lil’ Miss. These two, however, call me ‘mother’.”
---
The awkward silence after that little reveal persisted long enough for everyone to be seated and served surprisingly well made food. Only the mother touched their dish. The girls were either feeling to awkward (Miltiades), too angry (Melanie), or just too confused (Ruby) to think about eating. “Well, it’s not going to bite you,” the mother Malachite chuckled. “Eat up!”
“Why?” Melanie asked.
“What else do you do with food?” Lil’ Miss joked.
“I mean, why are you here?” Melanie’s hand slammed the table. “Why gather us? Why… just why!?”
“I heard you were in town,” Lil’ Miss told her, “and I missed my girls! I am sorry about the methodology, but I knew you two wouldn’t trust a Spider’s courier.”
“Did you really think that we would just treat this like a happy family reunion?” Melanie scoffed.
The mother slowly lowered her fork. “Perhaps that is a little optimistic of me. Very well, I’m sure you have questions.”
“Why did you never tell us you were alive?” Miltiades jumped in right away.
“Did you think it was a secret you two wanted out?” Lil’ Miss asked in turn. “My disappearance was part of an elaborate plan to take control of the Spiders. I launched an attack, then vanished. The spread themselves thin trying to follow every rumor I planted.” She smirked, “too thin. Next thing they knew their leadership was gone and it was either join me or join them.”
Ruby shuddered at the implication.
“Anyways,” Lil’ Miss continued, “one of those false rumors reached your own ears. By the time the plan was finished, you two had already left. Like I said, I knew you wanted out, so I let you be. I figured contactin’ you would only complicate your lives in ways you were tryin’ to escape.”
Melanie scoffed again. “Are you seriously trying to say you let us think you were dead because you cared?”
“I resent that accusation,” Lil’ Miss frowned. “I may not have been the best mother to you girls, but you are my flesh and blood. How do you think you got that job with Junior, hm? After everyone else turned you down, somehow the less-reputable man was the one eager to hire you?”
“I thought it was because of his nature he took a chance on us,” Miltiades admitted.
“Well, I couldn’t order him to take you in,” Lil’ Miss clarified, “but he did hear one hell of a recommendation.”
“And you’ve been keeping an eye on us ever since?” Melanie questioned.
“Of course,” Lil’ Miss nodded. “It broke my heart when Beacon fell. With the communications down, I couldn’t check up on you. I was worried sick. When a Spider spotted the three of you in the markets, I knew I had to see you.”
“The three of us?” Ruby caught.
Lil’ Miss’s smile returned. “What mother isn’t interested the person that captures their children’s hearts? Circumstances aside, it is nice to finally meet you, Ruby Rose.”
“Um, it’s nice to meet you too?” Ruby returned unsurely.
“I’m sure it isn’t, but I appreciate your kindness,” Lil’ Miss responded honestly. “I just hope you’re treating my girls alright.”
“Better than you ever did,” Melanie jabbed.
Lil’ Miss frowned once more. “I suppose I do deserve that one. I told myself I was doing it so you two wouldn’t struggle in life. I didn’t see how it was affecting you in the then and there.”
The topic ran dry, and the awkward silence returned. “Are you going to eat?” Lil’ Miss eventually asked.
“Do we have a choice?” Melanie asked.
Lil’ Miss sighed. “You can leave anytime you want.”
“Good,” Melanie stood.
“But please,” Lil’ Miss insisted. “Just humor me. One meal with my daughters…”
Melanie only stopped to spare her mother a dirty look before continuing to the door.
“Wait!” Ruby called out.
Melanie stopped. “You’re going to defend her? She’s a crook, Ruby, you basically just heard her admit to killing people!”
“Well, I know if my mom came back to life I wouldn’t care what she’s been doing the last ten years,” Ruby pointed out. “Well… I mean I would, but… you know what I’m saying.”
Miltiades shook her head. “Your mother was a saving people by day, baking cookies by night super-mom. Ours isn’t exactly in the same league.”
“But…”
“Ms. Rose,” Lil’ Miss interrupted. “I appreciate what you’re saying, but the girls are right. I only have myself to blame for their opinion of me.” She stood to face Melanie eye-to-eye, “but if you ever change your minds, I’ll be right here.”
Ruby frowned. She couldn’t say she understood, but she knew it wasn’t her choice.
“C’mon,” Miltiades took their girlfriend’s arm to guide her out. “We have people waiting for us anyways. I’m surprised Nora hasn’t already started breaking legs.”
The scene in front of the bar hadn’t changed much, an eerily still standoff with all people in the same places as a half an hour ago. “See?” The girl guard from before spoke to Jaune, “your friends are safe.”
“What happened?” Jaune asked the three of them.
The twins stayed silent. Ruby only responded with a, “just… don’t ask.”
Jaune was perplexed, but more than that he was happy that his friends were safe, so he took the advice and didn’t question it.
---
When the group got back to the hotel, they were greeted by the sight of a drunk Qrow and a farmhand with familiar eyes. “Where the hell have you all been!?” Qrow slurred.
“Where were we? Where were you!” Jaune countered. “We coulda used your help two hours ago!”
“I…” Qrow started firmly before a grin spread across his drunk face, “…found him.”
“Found who, the kid?” Nora asked.
“I found him…” Qrow chuckled and then practically cheered, “I found him!”
“He’s talking about me,” the kid confirmed.
“And you are?” Jaune questioned.
“Well, you might this hard to believe, but in a way… I am-”
“Nope,” Ruby interrupted, b-lining toward the farmhand. “No, no, no, no, no, no.” She repeated the word until she reached the boy and planted her hand over his mouth. “We have had a very long night. Some,” she gestured to the twins, “longer than others. I don’t think we’re ready for yet another head-spinning revelation, so please, is there any way this can wait for tomorrow?”
The boy looked from side to side, as though listening for something, before slowly nodding.
“Thank you!” Ruby sighed in relief. “Girls, let’s go cuddle.” Melanie opened her mouth, only to be cut of as well, “and before you say you’re not in the mood, I remind you that I am an expert in cuddles, and after that, you two definitely need some.”
Melanie chucked and smiled. “I was going to say cuddles sound nice,” she assured. The twins followed Ruby upstairs, finally, to some proper peace and quiet.
---
A few days later, Lil’ Miss was starting her day with the newspaper. She read about how a group of faunus straight from Menagerie stopped the White Fang from carrying out a terrorist attack on Haven Academy. She also knew Ruby, and by extension her daughters, had business in Haven that night. She wondered if the two events were connected.
As she mused over the printed word, a customer entered her bar. A giant monster of a man, tanned, and with rather magnificent mutton chops. “Looking for information?”
“People,” the man corrected in deep tones. He tossed forward a few pictures. Lil’ Miss was an expert in hiding her emotions, which came in handy as she recognized the people in an instant. Ruby Rose and the people she was travelling with.
“Come back in a day or two,” Lil’ Miss told him.
“A day or two?” The man questioned.
Lil’ Miss shook her head. “There are a lot of people in Mistral. I only keep eyes on the important ones. These people are not important. It will take me time to gather the info, but trust me, I will find them.”
“Very well. Two days.” The man left without another word.
The same girl that traded barbs with Jaune a few days before turned to Lil’ Miss. “I assume we won’t be telling him they’re headed for Atlas?”
“Of course not,” Lil’ Miss answered. “But we have two days to make a believable lie. I hear Vacuo is nice this time of year.”
“People don’t like being sold false info,” the girl pointed out.
“Then we won’t sell it,” Lil’ Miss nodded. “We don’t need his money anyways. We just need to steer him clear of my girls. Make sure there’s room for error in the info packet, just in case.”
“Clever, ma’am. I’ll get right to it.” The girl left to perform her duties.
Lil’ Miss looked back down to the pictures, eyes passing over her daughters in turn before settling on Ruby. “What kind of enemies do you have, Ms. Rose? It’s up to you to keep my daughters safe. I hope you’re up to the task.”

I understand I just implied something that has to potential to cause much larger changes to RWBY's narrative. That realization, that Lil' Miss might not want to endanger her children, is precisely what I wanted to acknowledge here. However, I have neither the creativity nor the investment to follow a full fic exploring those changes. So I apologize, but this will remain a one-shot.
