37.  36. GREECE Victor Vernicos - “What they say” 30th place

I enjoy being right. 🙂 Sorry, but 14 points in a TELEVOTE, (12 of which from Cyprus) in a semi that has the utterly unvoteable Romania and San Marino in it? Greece was and IS the worst in this year. Sitting through it was like watching a stream of meconium ooze from a baby’s anus.

Sure, one could argue that "What they say” was redeemable as like... a laughable trainwreck, and yeah, it could have been on paper. I have to draw a line somewhere, and “somewhere” is where a delegation sends a minor to the contest, SEES the footage of him utterly flunking the live and then does nothing, allowing him to humiliate himself in front of millions of people. Shitty broadcasters to the fucking bottom of the ranking!

But even besides that, the song is just a wretched Ed Sheeran pretend ballad, like someone took a cleaver to “Castle on the hill” and hacked out all the mildly enjoyable mellow parts and replaced them with a stop-motion-like cadence, cursive singing and Sad Boy Emoness. Victor sings that he hates his feelings and my feelings are that I hate everything about his song.

Like, I can’t be the only person so UTTERLY SICK of these misguided self-aggrandising songs that actively try to use real-life mental health issues to provide unsoliicited social commentary for their own personal gain? Be it in a competition or to make oneself appear ~morally righteous~. Enough with the devious white-washing of actual mental health issues. 

 At least that is what I’m forced take away from this shitty song because these lyrics don’t make any fucking sense: Victor sings that “Lost Souls” make sure no one loses their way and “Hurt ones” can’t stand seeing others in pain, and also that he’s both (?) and that he’s got too much on his plate, wanting to save the others (?????) and that it’s TOO LATE FOR HIM (??????) Someone heard this and wasn’t instantly alarmed by how dark this is? WTF?! SICC A PSYCH ON HIS ASS, ASAP!

But of course, any potential complexity is instantly undermined by the visuals.

Hide your sisters and daughters from this creep and his eerie obsession with “snake eyes” and “biting tongues” and “butterflies in his ears”. I would be less bad if “E-King” (you’re a grown man, consider a name change) wasn’t this off-puttingly smug or didn’t have a voice like newborn goat choking on its colostrum. “Like an animal” is three minutes of extreme discomfort. 35. 34. ROMANIA Theodor Andrei - “D.G.T.” Joint LAST.

Sigh, this one just makes me feel sad.  As you know I was a Theodor apologist before and honestly, I still kinda like him as a person?

DGT was a shambles though. Theodor was always due to create some discomfort, given that he has never not looked like a Project Runway second boot called Susan and DGT’s lyrics involve *this specific person* talking graphically about being carressed by his girlfriend’s fingers and wanting to rip her clothes off. So yeah a hard sell, but not impossible!!

However, the live was a bare step above San Marino in terms of second-hand embarrassment. An weird musical bisection, an amateur hour act swallowed by the LEDs and utter SILENCE from the audience which thundered over the off-pitch wailing condemned Romania to nill pointer hell.

The acoustic start, WHY? 

The CSI floordrops, WHY? 

The selfie backdrops, WHY?

 The black paint on the naked torso, WHY? 

the shrill falsetto WHYYYYYY?!

And just like how the San Marinese cringe is present but in a lesser form, so is Greece’s shitty broadcaster behaviour. After forcing Theodor to transmogrify his opening minute into an unplugged acoustic version (a decision that completely ruined the song), TVR just called it a day, and happily sent Theodor to his doom with no real regrets. WTF?!

Basically, these three nil point flops (yeah totally counting Greece as one, deal!) are all tied for last place, but I had to pick an order. Greece are the most awful for exploiting a minor. San Marino deliberately chose someone with a very annoying voice and face, so they’re second last. Theodor meanwhile, is actually kinda talented and was mostly the victim of TVR’s lack of involvement, to which I say: If your participations in Eurovision amount to throwing an eighteen year old to the vultures because you’re too bothered to actually support him through the ordeal, Romania, then don’t bother with ESC and just fucking QUIT!!!

I don’t remember the last actual blog I blocked honestly. I block too many bots to remember lol. My space is so insanely curated it’s hard to come across shit I strongly dislike anymore. The only time I do is when mutuals reblog from people whose blogs I don’t like, which usually isn’t an issue until I start seeing really rank shit on my dash repeatedly. I’m pretty tolerant but after seeing like…certain stuff I just kinda decide I’ve had enough. But at that point if it’s a mutual I don’t block, I just unfollow. Any time I block someone it’s because they’ve come into my space via reblogging and commenting whether that be on the actual post or in the tags something I don’t like, leaving it in the comments, or sending asks (which is usually done on anon).

I’m beating a dead horse here but like, pretty much anything with the LOV I disagree with like majority? It’s either one of two extremes—the “they’re irredeemable psychos” takes that I can’t take seriously, or the “they’re a loving found family trying to make the world a better place by fighting for justice” takes. Those actually annoy me more because they often come hand in hand erasing everything that makes the LOV interesting. I also get annoyed by them more because I USED to think that. I know why I thought that and how I got sucked into it, but it’s annoying looking back at how miserable it made me to read it that way. It’s annoying that I got out of it and am super stoked with almost everything the manga does now but the space I was in just stayed there and continues to spread unnecessary negative bad faith takes based on…ideas that the manga has stomped on and tossed out. These are the types of takes that mutuals put on my dash that I’m more or less tolerant of until I’ve had enough lol.

The Tomura Izuku dynamic. I used to wonder if I was looking too deep into it but NO like dude all the art Hori puts into them and their dynamic and the way the story is panning out RIGHT NOW tells me that no, I’m not looking too deep.

It gets ignored in favor of like…the LOV. I get finding the Tomura/LOV dynamic interesting because I was there at one point but it’s so…not what I thought it was (back then). It’s not as explored or deep or significant as everyone tries to make it out to be. In fact often times posts I see looking at them this way have nothing solid taken straight off the page to base that take on. I find that often it’s taking small moments of characterization and just blowing them out of proportion to overshadow everything else because it paints a nice idealized picture I guess, idk.

Tomura’s and Izuku’s roles in each other’s arcs get ignored and overlooked. “They’ve only talked twice 🙄” “Izuku tried to kill him in the PLF war he’s not heroic 🙄”. Like these takes completely ignore Tomura’s perception of their relationship (actually their LACKTHEREOF—BUT NOT TO HIM) and ignore how desperate Tomura actually is to latch onto an ideal (saving someone from the heart, saving no matter what, saving everyone within your reach) and a person (Izuku) who represents that ideal. Izuku represents the core of everything Tomura’s wanted growing up and people just…ignore that in favor of some headcanon which I think is criminal.

So this is like third-hand news so take with a grain of salt, but I saw on twt that there was apparently a scene filmed between Ed and Izzy that wasn’t included in the final cut because, in Con’s words, it would’ve made Ed “irredeemable”. It’s not confirmed but a part of this scene may still have made it into one of the s2 teasers (Ed throwing knives at Izzy’s head).

On the one hand I think they should’ve kept it in, because I genuinely do not think that anything they would write for Ed would make him irredeemable. That’s like, one of the whole points of his s2 character arc, and including a scene where he’s doing some truly deranged shit might have even fleshed out that arc more.

On the other hand though I am so thankful to be free of the discourse that would’ve erupted from it, because there is already a significant chunk of the fandom can’t seem to grasp that Ed, as he’s currently written, isn’t an irredeemable monster.

ok but the insistence that “i, strahd” is propaganda is because people want to justify being predatory towards their players 🙄 if they even read the second book, they’d know strahd goes to great lengths to hide his personal journals. and even though ravenloft has HUGE continuity issues, the books have been used by older modules to solidify dates multiple times, and events have been previously canonised (like leo attacking the wedding etc).

Unpopular opinion time || Accepting

i don't know if this is such an unpopular opinion now, but the way people say 'oh if you write this bad thing that means you support it' realLY GRINDS MY GEARS. like oh, i write the living personification of the british empire so that means i looove imperialism. NO. WRONGO LMAO. i write conall as a terrible irredeemable thing because he IS. but there are some people who see that i write him and would assume that i condone his and the actions of the british empire when thats clearly not how im writing him 🥴

but that can be said for anyone writing anything morally questionable. just bc someone writes something that is wrong, unforgivable, cruel, unjust, etc, doesnt mean they support it. how else do you get conflict in fiction? you as the reader are meant to judge how a character reacts to something bad, and if they react in a way thats against your own morals or the general morals of humankind then you know theyre a questionable person. thats the point. how do we write villains and conflict and things that happen to people if us as writers are made out to support these things simply?? from writing them??

and if youre writing a canon character, sometimes these bad things are a core part of their development as a character (for example, camilla being sexually abused by her own brother. i dont think donna tartt condones that happening, but that was part of camillas character development) and i think we would be doing a disservice to the character if we erased that bad thing from happening to them. same thing with villains or antagonists doing bad things. we'd be doing a disservice to an antagonist by erasing the bad things they do to people.

so...yeah. if you write things that are morally questionable or things that are bad...that doesnt mean you support that thing and it kills me that us as writers are expected to water things down just bc of that 🙄

Can we stop talking and making shows/movies about Dahmer all for the sake of profit and entertainment? I saw the show and here are my thoughts.

1. The acting was phenomenal all around.

Of course Niecy was superb and really gave us concerned auntie.

The guy who played the father of the Laotian boys really did a great job and so did the man who played Jessie Jackson

2. I was so annoyed how many episodes focused on Jeff and his family. They gave us all that dramatization of his backstory to give a reason why he was a fucking monster when really, some people are just fucked up and irredeemable. But, we had to see him craving love and being kind once or twice and learn how his parents let him down to explain his terror. Y'all do this everytime there's a white killer.🙄

3. The way the police are useless and racist and terrorist like that is regular.

My heart goes out to the families harmed by Dahmer but stop making Dahmer look like a misunderstood boy
