I really think we are intellectually doomed when a tampon brand says “Only women menstruate,” and the comments are full of people saying, “I guess menopausal women aren’t women then.”

Gun Park (Park Jonggun x Female Reader!) short story
Tumblr media
A/N: Hello fellow human! Sorry if I ever replied back REALLY LATE. I'll still make Lookism x reader content, but I'm really busy rn so sorry if this felt rushed (and I have a periodical exams to take in Wedensday oof). Genre: fluff? Warnings: mild cursing and mentions of mafia activities (unedited)

Gun isn't exactly the type to easily fall in love, even impressing him alone without trying hard is challenging by itself as many successors, enemies, and other people tried to show their all to the Shiro Oni. But every blood, sweat, and tears were wasted just trying to lay a finger by the unstoppable man, if they would even call him one.
And it is also just a normal day for everyone, people in the city are either spending their money off by their personal plans or continue on with their daily lives. Other women were having their shopping galore either with their friends or alone with quite noticeable make-up plastered on their face yet making their face sparkle up with the cosmetics. Ulzzangs posting their new selfies getting tons, if not millions of likes and social media users having a debate who's prettier or more attractive. Students were stressing out with their school activities or gossip drama with the adults wanting to slack off and get a chug of beer after a long day of their shifts or just take a long nap like a lazy cat with their eyebags being dark and hollow like a panda.
And to most people, you're just an ordinary woman living her life in the crowded city of Seoul. You wouldn't exactly call it the best life ever, but you were somehow thankful to make it this far after long days of shifts and even sometimes working on Holidays even if you want to have a sip of your own coffee at your own place. You're already a functional and working adult yet you sometimes miss your home despite you and your family having your own personal problems. Yet you continue to strive not only for them but mostly for yourself. If it weren't for some men forcing you to have a chat with you by offering their numbers quite rudely, you might even have better days without them putting you into situations you don't even want to experience just because you were considered beautiful.
It was already five in the afternoon, yet you're still there at the cafe doing your duties as a barista and a waitress. The place will be quite silent, almost weird with the sound of silence if it weren't for the chatty customers with some chilling with their drink and pastries of choice. College students doing their research in groups, office-workers updating their marketing plans, and angsty teenagers listening to their melancholic music with their Airpods on. With the stress that you are feeling right now, you felt the need to listen to your own playlist while you watched the sun sank in the sky with a splash of pink, yellow, and blue creating a splash of colors that felt nostalgic yet different at the same time.
Hours passed with people coming in and out, the sky already turning night time with white stars sparkling at night. The yellow lights of the place illuminating at the dark to not only make the place more atmospheric, but to also make the customers feel comfortable with the chill yet warm vibe.
"Miss Y/N, are you already getting the order done for customer five?" your manager with a dark perfect bun for her hairstyle with pale foundation, reddish blush and lip tint, and sunken eye bags (reminding you of a porcelain doll) asked with a raised eyebrows and strict tone as you responded with a hum for agreement while you're mixing and preparing the drink condiments. "Yes Sajangnim (boss) I'm already done with the coffee macchiato and I already have the egg sandwich." you replied while hurrying to prepare the Americano. "Good, more tickets are coming you better hurry up." she replied while she scolds your co-worker that you are deeply annoyed at when she's slumping on the side clicking on her phone instead of helping you out. "She's probably texting someone to date huh?" a voice on your side whispered while you yelped in surprise. "Fucking, geez stop spawning randomly on the side like that." you hissed as he chuckles silently trying to minimize his voice while you also tried not to laugh hysterically. "Okay fine. You're working too much. I'll do the coffee latte and get the mango graham and the croissant." he suggested while your eyes widened in confusion and a bit of surprise. "You sure Jace?" you asked the young man with big ears as he raises a thumbs up "It's fine Eonni (older sister ; metaphorically). Now you go." "You just want your fees to go higher." you teased as he manners to go shooing you away. "I need it since I got to repair Vasco's phone." "Whatever, just do the job right and smooth." you smiled while he finger guns with a tongue-click sound.
You took the orders in your hand and approached the table before you quickly noticed the two familiar guys. You sighed before going closer to the very annoying customers just then the blonde with dark shades greeted you with a dramatic enthusiasm.
"Yo Y/N! It's nice to see you where have you been?!" Goo stood up while waving his hand making the other customers look in confusion. You not wanting to create a scene, you placed the tray in the table and planned to go away. But a hand held your own in a soft but not rather affectionate touch before you swat it away.
"What the hell are you doing in here?" you asked while you felt your blood boiling in frustration. "But we're here to-" "Shut the fuck up Walmart Ken." you scolded Goo while he created a insulting gasp while the ebony-haired man smirked in amusement. "We're here for Charles orders. We're going to take you back in the place where you truly belong for unfinished business." he commented in a calm yet teasing manner making you even more agitated. "This is my business, Gun." If it weren't for the other customers if they ever got frightened and with your manager firing you, you might created a miserable scene that you don't want to happen in the first place. But these people haunts down your biggest fears like a black hole swallowing your entire existence.
"And how did you even find me here? And don't you see the no smoking sign?" you rolled your eyes making Goo and Gun grin more while Gun huffs his smoke, "We have our own ways." "And c'mon Y/N, we know you miss doing tough missions with us!" Goo again interfered while you stood their in cold feet not knowing what to do with this situation. "And besides Charles is offering you a billion won with making the four major crews stronger for him to pay you, even make it thrice the price if you did the job well." Gun offered while taking a sip of his coffee and the other man looking at the menu sheet to order more of the sweets. "Well don't you contact me when either the Workers tried to interfere or your goons stabbing all of your backs." you replied with a sass while Gun just replies. "If that ever happens, I'm not going to hesitate to beat their-" "Yo Y/N, can I get a latte with a chocolate doughnut?" the childish guy ordered interrupting Gun's long speech. Though his eye accessory hides his orbs, you can imagine (almost see) Goo flickering his eyelashes like a puppy begging to play with it's owner. "Whatever, I'm leaving." you rolled your eyes in frustration before going to the employee room and aggressively slamming the door. "Wait what? Y/N We still have lots to talk about and my order-" Goo was about to chase you before Gun kicked him in the legs under the table, successfully earning a hiss of pain from the other guy. "Let her be, she'll change her mind." Gun interrupted while Goo raised his eyebrows. "Hah?! For fuck's sake we're just going to let her run away? Again? You'll be in fault if Charles scolded our scrawny asses again." Goo ranted as the people in the cafe started to weirdly glare at them for being to noisy. "I know where she's going, besides she would get scolded, even probably fired since she left during her shift. So just stay calm." Gun replied while stealing the sweet and umami food that Goo just offered that's been sitting for a minute now. "Hey! that's my sandwich!" "Just buy another one you got twenty thousand won on your wallet." Gun replied while he wipes off the extra mayo on his mouth with a tissue. "Says the one who's chomping off my toast right now, idiot." "Stop making Gordon Ramsey references or I'll kill you."
"Y/N where the hell have you been! Don't you see that there's lots of tickets flooding in here?! Oi you brat answer me!" your manager who's been flickering your guts scolded you while your co-worker from earlier smirks at your downfall, you not only fixing your bag in your locker but also trying to make yourself composed as you don't want to lash out your anger to the people who have done nothing wrong to you (they do, a lot but you just don't complain about it). "If you won't answer my question-" "Shut up." you murmured interrupting her speech in a lifeless manner. "I'll leave. You can fire my ass." "Hey Y/N what is going on in here?" Jace asked before you again slammed the exit door, leaving the poor guy confused and lots of responsibility in his hands...
Tumblr media
You ran, as fast as you could. You kept running and running. You ran past the tall buildings filled with city lights creating a beautiful atmosphere, yet the familiar feeling of sorrow began to linger on your mind and heart reminding you of the memories of the past that you tried to bury deep down to start a completely fresh start of the first chapter of your life. But it looks like even books can have it's pages ripped and burned.
After a long mile, you stopped your movement as you breathe deeply trying to catch air like you're being suffocated by your feeling of dread. You didn't want to go in this place, but it is the only place that you called home.
This is the place where you met them, where you grew up, and where you were turned into a monster.
It is an old and abandoned park, the fake wood texture of the metal benches started to rust with the colorful paint with vulgar words and drawings adding to the stain. Trash were everywhere, even a scary place like this looks like it's been a hang out for runaway teenagers or addicts. The trees and plants look completely dry and lifeless since it's not been watered and just not being cared of, making the crunchy leaves fall down into the ground. Newspaper with the dirty and used ashtrays and used beverage bottles were also scattered in the area. It is a complete mess like what you are right now, but the smell of toxins and beer makes your mind hazy and in peace as you try to think of the good memories that you have in here (if you ever had one).
You thought that you can finally have your moment of peace and solitude. But it looks like you have to deal with these fuckers you kept whistling and cooing at your existence. Looks like they're drunk men who's been wasting their life, completely indulged in alcohol and other things that are addicting even though they mostly look formal, decent, and clean. The police were doing a bad job for shooing away people who don't have a home but doesn't arrest people like this. People who were supposed to act normal and responsible now that they have everything, not chugging on alcohol.
"Who is this chick over here?" a skinny man with a white polo asked as his friend's arms snaked into your shoulder, making you uncomfortable. "What are you doing here alone? Is your boyfriend supposed to take-" "Shut the fuck up and leave me alone retards." you swatted his hand away and getting distance from them, but this doesn't alarm the men keeping their annoying behavior in touch. They started making laughs and mocking faces making your blood boil. "Feisty huh? Don't worry, We will take care of yo-"
Everything went fast as you slammed him into the ground. His friends were caught off guard but the other goon decided to take you down. "You bitch!-"
It looks like a bad idea huh? Since you were so fast, you managed to capture and block his punch. You put pressure on his hand as you then twisted it making it dislocate and elbowing him on his armpit impacting pain on his shoulder and upper limb. He is now crying on the ground, coughing and crying like a little toddler who scratched his elbow as the other men decided to attack you besides the leader of the group who cowers in fear. Kicks, punches, and attacks are made by you causing them to get knocked out by your bare strength. You clicked your tongue in dismay when a familiar figure approached the scene. "I knew that you would be here." he muttered while you huffed in pure disgust as Gun smirked at the damage you have inflicted. "If you asked again for me to be a slave of your shitty management I'm not going with you." cutting him off with a unsatisfied tone, you started walking away from the place but then he tapped your shoulder. But you're not in the mood to interact with anybody. You didn't even thought twice that you punched him in the face yet he didn't even budged. A flow of blood starting to drool down on his chin. The masochistic Shiro Oni starting to get excited about your sudden aggression as he let himself get hit in the first place. "Will you stop following me around like a dog?! GET LOST YOU MOTHERFUCKER!"
"Punching me on the face would not end great for you, but this is why I like you Y/N. Now show me what you got can you?~" his demonic grin appearing on his scarred face.

I DNF'd Mistorn: Here's Why
Disclaimer: You asked for this. Let me start there. Don't get mad at me, Mistborn lover. If you clicked on this link, and that means you are taking the dagger into your own hand. The wound is self-inflicted!
Tumblr media
I did not finish Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I know, I know, its actually called The Final Empire. The name Mistborn has stuck with so many readers for a reason, so I'll continue to use it as a shorthand. The book didn't work for me, but I think WHY it didn't work for me might be interesting to read about, especially for fellow authors.
If you have read and enjoyed the Mistborn books, or any work by Brandon Sanderson, I'm delighted. I want to applaud any work of fiction that brings people joy (so long as it or its author is not reprehensible in some way (he said, covering his ass)). I don't want you to think this is me taking shots at you or at Sanderson. I'm just talking about a work of fiction and what it did to my brain.
Believe me when I tell you I have no delusions about being some high-handed minister of good taste. You should see some of the anime I watch to destress at the end of a long day trying to be a self-published author, editor, and, well, just an ordinary semi-functioning human being.
I've read many, many books and loved them, only to come back to them later and find they were … less deserving of my matured tastes. Sometimes books meet us at the right time. If Mistborn was, or is, one such book for you, I would be a jerk and a fool if I tried to tell you that you were wrong for liking it. That isn't what this is. But, if you're at all curious why I didn't like it the way you did, here are my thoughts.
Instead of trying to construct some long elaborate essay, I've decided to present my reading notes as I was writing them. If you're at all familiar with my SPFBO9 opening reads thread, this is in a similar, though much protracted style. This is my travelogue of the first few chapters. If these notes are rough or feel stilted in places, I'm sorry. I DNF'd the book a few months ago, and I found in trying to clean up my notes that I was making up commentary to fill in gaps and I don't think that's fair. I've tried to provide some context where I could.

My Notes:
Starts well enough. Interesting introduction to the fantastic elements of the environment (the ash fall) and the enslavement of the skaa. Some neat 2nd world titles “obligator,” etc.
Not great, not riveting, but competent introduction of world and one protagonist, Kelsier. He doesn't know what to do with Vin, though. Disconnect between the characters as we're told they are and their actions. Lacking coherent motivation.
(P.5)The slave that stands and stares defiantly sending a chill through the lord so-and-so is a bit melodramatic. Both actions struck me as over the top.
(writing note)…too many “of courses”
The writing is competent and descriptive. The Mist at night is another interesting setting detail.
(p.6) I immediately dislike Kelsier. “I’ll have to cure them of that (fear of the mist) some day.” This is has an unsympathetic arrogance about it. If this is also the man who stared defiantly at lord-so-and-so, hes blasé about endangering these people, and seems to look down on them, much like lord-so-and-so. I suspect this impression is not intentional. I suspect I’m supposed to think him strong and clever. We’ll see.
(7) rolling his eyes at these people. This seems intentional. But it’s also annoying.
(10) beatings beatings beatings. These “peasants” and their daily beatings. Did I mention the beatings? Their lives are harsh! There are beatings!
(‘) what is this talk about Tepper “leading” the skaa? Leading them how? They’re slaves! What decisions are they making? No, really. What is this forced little conflict? It’s pointless.
(‘) “How do you do that?” “What?” “Smile all the time” - there’s no reason for him to ask this. It’s unmotivated dialogue. How do you smile all the time? How? No. Why, sure. “You keep smiling. Is something about our home funny to you?”
(19-20, ch.1) I’m having trouble with Sandersons storytelling. This is coming across as heavy handed and simplistic. Here’s Vin. She was betrayed. There are betrayals. This boy who came to get her who’s nice enough will also betray her. But the ash is free…
I wonder if we’re going to slowly work through the alphabet section by section. Ash, then beatings and betrayal… who knows what could be next? Crime? I bet it’s crime.
Also - Reen’s sayings and betrayal. I think in general I find it a bit affected when we meet a character and they’re immediately thinking of their backstory … but that’s probably not fair of me. I think what comes across as affected is Sandersons execution. There’s a very light fiction - YA quality about Vin’s angsty introduction. I might have loved it if I read it at 14, but not now.
I’d like to think of an example of what would be more appealing to me - the introduction of a character with similar enough circumstances… Actually, Gideon the 9th might be a good example. We get to hear Gideon’s voice in the prose and the dialogue and get a strong sense of her character as well as the specific and very interesting world building details of how she got into the 9th house. Here, Reen’s betrayal is left completely unexplored, and so I wonder why bring it up at all except for that cheap YA punch in the gut of “my brother betrayed me and now I’m here.”
Maybe Sanderson felt some necessity to move faster here. He wanted to get to the city theiving … but it isn’t working for me, so obviously I think it was a mistake. Obviously he was hoping this would create a sense of anticipation that we would eventually find out HOW Vin’s brother betrayed her, but because he leads with it and then doesn’t explain it, it makes it seem like it doesn’t really matter HOW Vin was betrayed, what’s important is that she was betrayed and now she doesn’t trust anyone. It’s just a bit weak.
THE HEAVY HANDEDNESS (People being mean to Vin - her hard life) (21) the slap in the face (23) Theron looking Vin up and down - “eyes lingered on her … running down the length of her body. … She was hardly enticing (didn’t even look 16); some men preferred such women, however.” (24) “what do you know?” “Enough” - Vin hurts her, expositional dialogue about her brother’s debt and selling her to a whorehouse.
(25) fearing Vin would disappear in a scene she doesn’t have much to do during, we get these unnecessary interjections of her watching the interaction, followed by the explanation of Camon thinking Vin is his good luck charm. This should have been presented earlier, because it just interrupts the dialogue here. But also, it feels inaccurate after Vin made such a useful critique of Camon’s servants. She seems much more useful in other ways than a luck charm, and comfortable offering her criticism without the slightest hesitation.
This chapter ends rather abruptly and without much Go to it. Vin uses her Luck and gets our stuffy official to consider her boss’s mundane business proposal.
The notion that Camon brings Vin along because he thinks of her as his luck charm feels really thin, especially on a job like this where everyone has to look the part. Which raises an important question: what was Vin doing there? I mean literally. Why didn’t Camon have SOMETHING for her to do. Camon didn’t dress her up in any part, she didn’t have any kind of cover story as his daughter or nurse or anything. Just some kid in the room dressed … who knows how while important official business is discussed. She just floats somewhere, doing nothing, as far as anyone is concerned.
VIN’S MOTIVATION Where is it? What does she get out of making this work for Camon if he has no idea what she’s doing? Why is she avoiding him if this is such an important job? Why is she helping him at all?
The pieces are there, but Sanderson doesn’t put them together.
Camon should know about Vin’s ability to “smooth things over” in some capacity. This would give him a serious reason for her being there on this crucial job. Vin should be motivated to help him because if this lucrative job works out, it will go a long way towards paying off her brother’s debt. Now suddenly there is a sense of urgency for her instead of just having a bad time owned by a “crew leader” getting slapped around. The scam itself isn’t enough. Frankly, it’s kind of boring at this point. It’s a slow moving beurocratic swindle.
(32) Kelsier. Sanderson is doing a good job introducing some thieves’ cant here as Dockson and Kelsier are planning their job, talking about how they need a “Smoker.” Someone is a good Tineye. The loss of a man to the Steel Ministry underscores the mortal risk these men are taking. But … there’s something about all this crime play that feels a bit cute, like Sanderson had only a passing, generic understanding of (fictional) gangs/criminal organizations. He’s spent his world building energy on the fantasy aspects of the story - the dystopian Tolkien Lord Ruler and Steel Ministry, skaa, ashfalls, mist - but not on developing the criminal world of the characters, linguistically speaking. They’re all crews working on a job headed by a crew leader. This is the world we’re living in, most immediately, and yet it feels the most underdeveloped.
“Kelsier shook his head. ‘No. He’s a good Smoker, but he’s not a good enough man.’ Dockson smiled. ‘Not a good enough man to be on a THIEVING CREW … Kell, I have missed working with you.”
This stopped me dead. I laughed at the book and put my hand over my eyes. “Thieving crew” is just silly. It’s sixth grade D&D language, but even more ridiculous is the sentiment of Dockson’s statement: that character is somehow a moot point because they are criminals. It’s as if he’s saying: we’re breaking the law, so we’re the bad guys, and bad guys don’t work with “good men.”
Here we see Sanderson’s shallow understanding of the characters he’s portraying. They are stealing from slavers who exist in the service of a brutal, oppressive dictator. But put that aside, and consider we’ve just been told one of their ilk had been caught and beheaded by the Ministry. The risk these people are facing couldn’t be higher. Working with people they can trust, a stand up guy or a “good man,” would be one of the most important things to them. From their point of view a “good man” doesn’t mean a patron saint of the poor, but it means a hell of a lot. If a guy is a drunk who cheats on his wife, you can’t trust him not to turn on you. If he gambles too much, you can’t trust him not to gamble on your safety. He doesn’t keep his apartment clean, how can you trust him to be conscientious about keeping you alive. It all matters - even more so because he’s on a “thieving crew.”
Now, Sanderson probably didn’t give this line more than a moment's thought. He was writing fast and sailed right over it. But that’s exactly the problem. It gives the book a kind of childish, YA feeling.
(33) “Kelsier turned with curious eyes.” I’ve written lines like this, but I almost always revise them because I write about eyes too much. The point is his eyes aren’t curious, Kelsier is, and it shows on his face. I can’t picture curious eyes, and I’m sure you can’t either. And I would cut the next line of dialogue - going to chastise my brother … we already know he was going to do this because he said so, and the line just isn’t very good anyway. A look of curiosity from Kell, and the promise from Dockson “it’ll be worth your time,” gets us out of the section better. Sometimes the best repartee between characters is a look.
(33-34) the scenes with Vin remain heavy handed, and affected. This section adds almost nothing to the story accept for the disappointingly narrow view of a fantasy underworld that the women in it are only ever whores. This from a world crawling with Smokers and Tineyes? I think not. The clumsy presentation of Vin’s awful life is what makes these sections particularly affected. With her particular ability to use her Luck, I can’t help but wonder why she’s even still here. That seems to be the story to me. Not the abuse, but why she remains when she clearly has the power to get out. She can smooth over deals with reps from the SM, but she hasn’t thought to calm some member of the crew and then just … walk? Go literally anywhere in the city and use her Luck to get work where she won’t be whipped and slapped. It seems like the easiest thing in the world, so why hasn’t she done it? This is what the story here could have been, and it would have been so much more interesting.
Obviously she has to be there so Sanderson can have terrible things happen to her so she can be saved by Kelsier just like he saved the other raped scaa girl (let’s all take a moment to roll our eyes) and then her character can have a trajectory from passive victim to active hero - but that’s an excuse, and excuses don’t make good stories.
That said, as is, these two pages could be cut entirely and with very minor revision to the next session, nothing would be lost. It introduces a hideout we don’t need to know about, abuse that is redundant, over the top and unmotivated, and then Camon says “it’s time.” It’s just a prelude, in which nothing happens, before the actual scene. So just cut to the actual scene.
(36) we finally find out what the Camon job was supposed to be, I suspect because Sanderson finally decided what the details were. It would have been much more interesting to know this earlier, just like it would have been more interesting to understand about the particulars of Vin’s brothers betrayal earlier, so we could understand the context of the story being told.
But a LARGER ISSUE continues to emerge. First Camon tells Vin nothing about his plans. She says she is apparently the only crew member who didn’t know what was going on. Then, as they sit in the waiting room, in the vey belly of the obligator beast, he tells her everything. Why? Because Sanderson wants us to know even though he never decided who this character was.
He wants her to be a passive victim of inordinate abuses by a group of irredeemable villains, who only avoids constant sexual assault through the exhausting use of her secret magic so she can be saved and then learn how to be powerful later. But he also wants her to be a smart, capable member of Camon’s crew who is considered as such, because he knows passive protagonists aren’t interesting and because he wants us, the reader, to know what’s going on, and also think that Vin is cool. She can’t be both at the same time. She either needs to be less of an abject, pathetic victim, or she needs to be less involved in this big important scam - and that means she knows less about it and does less to make it work. As is, he’s done too little with either idea of her character and both Vin and Camon are an unmotivated mess.
(42) steel inquisitor. Cool, creepy, disgusting - something straight out of hellraiser.
(43) “Besides, I’m not about to let a possible Mistborn slip away from us” Ah!
Ch3 (45) after the meeting with the obligator (that was a trap), is the first time Vin ever expresses any interest in getting away. Much too late Sanderson gives us a much too thin reason why Vin hasn’t run away (considering the conflicting versions of her character as mentioned before). It’s little more than an afterthought.
(47) in no more than 2 pages Vin goes from never thinking she could make it on her own to leaving for good, telling herself she’d survived sleeping in alleyways before, she could do it again and - “Reen had taught her how to scavenge and beg. Both were difficult in the Final Empire … but she would find a way, if she had too.”
So far, this is all based on a bad feeling. More motivation conflict - Vin has no problem telling Camon directly how his plans won’t work and that he should change the way the servants are dressed, helps him succeed with her luck in both plans, but sees no reason to tell him “I have a bad feeling about this. That was too easy. Why did that obligator suddenly agree. Doesn’t this seem weird to you?”
Sanderson has many of the right pieces, but he hasn’t been able to put them together coherently.
(45)(And, just as an aside, I’m not sure why a girl who has spent to book so far reiterating to herself that EVERYONE WILL BETRAY ME is going out of her way to tell Ulef she has a bad feeling and to get him to come with her. Sanderson says “if he would go with her, then at least she wouldn’t be alone.” But he has also up until this point defined her character by a near constant desire to be alone - when she is introduced sitting in the window of the hideout thinking her brothers word “Vin wasn’t on duty; the watch-hole was simply one of the few places where she could find solitude. And Vin liked solitude. ‘When you’re alone, no one can betray you’- (37) at the “It’s just another betrayal, she thought sickly. Why does it still bother me so? Everyone betrays everyone else. That’s the way life is … She wanted to find a corner - someplace cramped and secluded - and hide. Alone.”
(47) "Bringing Ulef was a good idea. He had contacts in Luthadel." These after the fact explanations are no good. This isn't Vin thinking this, it's the author coming up with more justification for Vin's action, but in order for her character to seem active and motivated, this needed to be revised into the section where Vin decides to bring Ulef. Now it's just tacked on - oh, yeah, and, by the way, if you weren't sure it made sense for Vin to do this, Ulef probably knows people. So, there.
It doesn’t wash. Who is this girl? Can she not stand the idea of being alone, or is it the one and only thing she wants? Is she strong and resourceful in spite of her circumstances, or is she a passive victim? Does she believe everyone will betray her, or does she desperately want to believe otherwise because she can’t live in such an unkind world? Sanderson doesn’t seem to have been able to make up his mind. Maybe some of these details were added in revision on the suggestion of beta readers and the result is a checkerboard character. I’ve seen that before where you make a suggestion to a writer and they add your suggestion but they don’t make the necessary changes to the rest of the book so that the new material earns its place, they just throw it in and dust off their hands - job well done, gotta stay on schedule to publish! But now I’m just writing fan fiction about Sanderson’s process. I don’t know.
(55) Vin’s “weakness” - the contradictions/inexactitude of characters seems to be an ongoing issue for Sanderson, at least for Vin. Is she weak and has to pretend to be strong, or is she strong and often chooses to pretend to be weak (so far she has seemed to be weak and act weak, other than her Luck).
Well, that's as far as I got. Kel shows up just in time to be the wrath of justice for Vin. He's the superman who will make everything alright for this feckless girl. Our hero. Did Sanderson lay it on thick enough? Did you get that these people were all so irredeemably and stupidly bad? Aren't you so glad this strong man has shown up to be Vin's vengeance, just like had been telegraphed all along?
Sorry, I don't mean to be sarcastic. This part of the narrative really isn't so bad, its just been so heavy handedly and clumsily lead up to that there's no thrill in it for me. It isn't a bit satisfying. I'm just glad I don't have to read about any of these shallow side-characters anymore. Except, I have no intention to read on, so I don't have to read about any of them anymore.
Is this book bad? Yes and no. I don't want to read any more, and only read as far as I did as an examination of storytelling, so for me its bad. You only get so many eyerolls before I have to say that. The sentences are very clear and coherent. On their own, they are coherent. Together, they fail to paint of picture of coherent characters who drive the action of the story. If you don't have that, at least in my book, you've got nothing.
The images work. The setting, in its broad strokes, is eveocative. I'd love to set a DnD campaign in a world of ash and a dark lord and all that (I'm not the least mad about the cliché of the dark lord, by the way. Who doesn't love archetypical stories?) But, as near as I can tell, there are no human beings in this book. No one is real. The characters are just that, only characters in a book. They are paper cutouts. They fall flat when the hand of the author isn't pushing them around and making them do things.
Fans often hold Sanderson up as the gold standard of a fantasy author who produces work fast. And having read this far into Mistborn, I can say this about it: It reads like it was written fast.
Yes, Mistborn was an earlier book of his, so I can't judge him by it alone. But it is a work that is so often held up as a favorite by his readers. That's why I picked it up, to see what all the fuss was about. There were many things I enjoyed, but what I enjoyed wasn't the narrative. The story and the characters who moved it were the thing that I enjoyed least. The unique magic and broad setting details and description of places and creepy Inquisitors were what I liked best. The proper nouns were fun.
But proper nouns don't make a story for me. So I did not finish Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson.
If I were looking for a light fantasy read that I didn't have to take seriously and I could pick up and put down whenever I wanted because it was never that exciting or particularly witty or clever, but managed to string along one event after another and kept them going, more or less, whether it made much sense or not, until the end, I think Mistborn would be a fine book to dip into. Lots of people have read it. But then, that seems to me to be its major appeal. It’s a book you can talk about with other people.
It's not enough for me, though. There's lots of fun fantasy books out there that feel more coherent, and, well, INTERESTED in the story they're telling. Interested in violence and revolution and crime in an oppressively totalitarian, dystopian world. Interested in the plight of a young girl who only wants … well, what does she want? To be safe? But the only way she finds she can be safe is to go toward danger and realize how very strong she is? Maybe this story would like to be that, but it hasn't been for the first 60 or so pages.
Sanderson's novel felt more interested in the large and vague story shapes around the characters - a city, a dark lord, slavery, soot snow, bad mist, some kinds of magic, and (I cringe to say it) rape and thieving and beatings - but not in the world of their lives.
I've heard good things about The Way Of Kings from people who did not like Mistborn either, but its safe to say at this point that I have reservations about my reading tastes being a good match for Sanderson's work, at least at this point in time.
If I'm looking for fun I'd rather read another swanky, noir fantasy by Douglas Lumsden any day, or the next gothic gaslamp fantasy mystery by Morgan Stang, or discover my next favorite author, indie or otherwise.
I don't think Mistborn was terrible by any stretch of the imagination. Sanderson has delighted readers for over a decade now! He's prolific, hard working, and he delivers what his fans want, and he and they continue to be richly rewarded for his efforts. He is a Name in the genre, often listed alongside the greats. And why not? Isn't pleasing readers what this is all about? Taylor Swift has oceans of adoring fans, and she's no less deserving of her accolades. Brandon Sanderson is the Taylor Swift of fantasy, you could say. I just don't like her music either.

Thinking about the old "Reimu is Mario and Sanae is Luigi" meme.
Thinking about how Marisa, with her black and white outfit, matches some of Wario's early appearances, alongside her blonde hair giving her yellow in her color scheme too.
Thinking about Marisa having a Sanae-like rival, and Sanae having a Marisa-like rival. The Waluigi of the quartet. Some sort of Ordinary Magician Of The Outside World who could visit the Moriya Shrine near-daily.
Maybe Sanae met her in Former Hell, while the Moriyas were setting up the nuclear reactor, somewhat mirroring how Reimu met Marisa in/near Makai for the first time in TH2; SoEW.
Maybe the repeated mirroring of Reimu's attributes results in this new girl circling back around to being rather Reimu-like again, but under a different context. Sometimes it seems like Reimu wouldn't go about resolving incidents if it weren't her job. She is certainly down for violence when need be, but it seems like she'd much rather relax. This is in contrast to the much more outgoing Marisa and Sanae who practically jump at resolving any incident they catch sight of. This new girl, in turn, gives an idea of what Reimu might've been like if she hadn't been given the responsibility of the Hakurei Shrine. She is legitimately good enough at magic to generally keep up with the protagonists in danmaku, at least as much as any typical playable character, but she just isn't that into incident resolving. Maybe Reimu and Marisa even met her during the events of 11, SA, Marisa getting her new rival just after Reimu got her own with Sanae, but then this girl just proceeded to hang out occasionally and not actually do any notable combat. At least, not any that would warrant being depicted from our perspective. She is just offscreen, just outside the panels, which would be fitting for someone I previously described as a Waluigi to round out the quartet.
Another way she might mirror Reimu enough to circle back around to being Reimu-like is potentially a connection of some sort to one of the sages. Specifically, with her being consistently offscreen, I think of Okina. Maybe Okina brought her in specifically to see how Outside World humans function these days when given a legitimate chance, helping her get started on learning magic before letting her go off on her own. I don't envision Okina as her boss exactly, I think being a free operative makes her a better counterpart to Marisa in comparison to Reimu and Sanae both having people they work for, but rather this gal is Okina's experiment. After Okina got the ball rolling she has kept an eye on the girl, but doesn't substantially interfere with her shenanigans unless she thinks it would be really funny/cool/interesting.
There are definitely more elements to consider for her. Like, I mentioned her meeting the characters in Former Hell, but I don't think that is where she lives. She probably just trained there, similar to how its been stated that magicians train in Makai. This girl just didn't have access to Makai so she tried to find the next best option available to her. If she isn't learning magic to work towards resolving incidents, then why is she doing it? Maybe Okina convinced her that she'd need to in order to survive? Maybe she has a particular goal mirroring Marisa's desire for immortality? Maybe where Marisa says "I want to live forever!" this girl is going "I'd really rather not die tomorrow."

While I lay beside the pool this afternoon, glancing up occasionally from my engrossing book to take in the startling blue of the South Aegean Sea, I thought ‘I have fallen into an alternate universe’. My beloved partner is basking in dappled shade beside me on a lounge chair drinking a Gin and Tonic, which is something that has never happened in 23 years. No holiday has ever looked like this. Not the swimming pool and lounge chairs anyway.
We could have found ourselves at a different island that is not nearly so perfect and quiet - at Paros perhaps where we stopped en route for 6 hours with hundreds of fellow travellers all taking in the sun, the cocktails and the techno music. That was quite an experience - one that we wouldn’t have had if we had booked our ferry direct from Athens to Sifnos before it was booked out. We also wouldn’t have seen that giant ferry to Santorini disgorge hundreds of jostling people (David and I among them) at Paros while it took on new queues and huge cargo. We could have ended up in a hotel that is not this one, with its private spacious and simply furnished rooms, its spectacular views, it’s wonderful food and its next-level friendly and hospitable staff. Hats off to Michelle from the Travel Notebook because this recommendation was hers.
Before settling in beside the pool, we had walked down unending squiggly roads to the beautiful village of Kastro, which we can see from our hotel room, and which was the capital of Sifnos in its hay day in the second half of the 6th Century. We had not been idle! It is hard to know whether these picture postcard traditional villages sustain ordinary daily life. We thought we saw evidence of people actually living and working there but those that boasted the credentials of interior designers were definitely for fine weather holiday makers. There was one in particular that captured our eye - it was a renovator’s delight with an uninterrupted view of the Aegean Sea and it was for sale.
David is usually first to cry when the situation demands it. At the Acropolis in Athens more recently, but at so many other versions of stirring things. Today as I walked the long and winding descent to the Epya Martyres (Seven Martyrs) chapel perched way out on a limb of this beautiful coast I could feel the beginnings of a sob. I got over myself of course - I had many concentrative steps ahead of me before I would rejoin David in his sketching vantage point further up.
The chapel is apparently one of the most photographed sights on Sifnos and a favourite of brides and grooms everywhere - but it would be much less accessible were it not for Nike from Sifnos (of mum and dad’s vintage) who funded the construction of the sturdy path we walked down. Two little peep holes on one side of the chapel allow you to see just how very small this ancient church is. In a non-Pandemic year, it could fit maybe 10 at a pinch. There are no windows to show off the sea at its back - almost no windows at all, in fact. Just these little round holes. It is both totally exposed and very private. Its interior was similar to the churches we visited in Paros but even simpler. There was also a deep functioning well at its front, with a hinged blue timber lid below which you can see water stored in terracotta. We saw people swimming off the rocks below into a crystal clear acqua blue sea. I hope I have the courage to do that before we leave.
We couldn’t find steps to the Acropolis above us and the Museum was closed when we arrived - but we did find a lovely meal and a taxi to take us back to our hotel. I don’t know what part of this Island we will be visiting tomorrow. We will decide over dinner I guess.

Each of us has unlimited potential and energy. So how do you know what she is like if you all say it? Do we know that we have that ability? Today's blog is about how to use the many potential abilities that each person has. I meet many young people who are self-conscious and sometimes they discuss self-development. It has been observed time and time again that today's young generation comes with a very limited mindset. This means that they are in their world. They live within their specific boundaries and are also experts in their subjects. One may call them specialists or rather they become specialists themselves. Starting to specialize is also good enough, as it opens your mind and makes you ready to learn. Many of us are not even aware of or even aware of the enormous potential we have stored in our minds. If you want to call that special quality a brain, it doesn't matter. Because they are just two words mind and brain, it is true. And especially in recent times, neurologists have discussed that humans use only a very small part of their brain for everyday tasks, and that part is also good enough for our journey through life. But, there are many parts of the brain, that we still haven't touched and don't know.
There is a special reason for this. The human brain is divided into two parts. One is the left brain and the other is the right brain. Both of those parts have different functions. Its left brain is a very practical brain, which does daily activities - business, survival, how much to eat, and what to do, basically it is the survival and practical brain. This is the left side.
So the right side is the intuitive brain. He understands things.. which is a little above ordinary logic and an ordinary sense of causality. It is the right part. When a person engages in a creative activity such as listening to music, meditating, or doing art, the right side of the brain is activated.
Generally, in most individuals, the left practical brain is used. In some instances, the right, creative, intuitive brain is used for a few minutes or a short time, and then, it reverts to the practical left side. Because once the creative 'input' comes in, it becomes necessary for the brain to put it into action or see the result. And that requires practical work. This is where practical brain work begins. This intuitive part of the mind is often neglected. I call it the mind, but it could also be the brain.
This intuitive part remains neglected. A man may be an expert; He may be doing very well financially, intellectually, etc. If he has to gather information for others, he may be a very good expert in gathering that information and using that information for his good and that of others. But the other part remains neglected, i.e. the intuitive part! Therefore, the brain develops from one side. The best way to realize the depth of your potential is to pay enough attention to the intuitive part of your mind.

Zooming in With Herbert
Tumblr media
Christ, was this 17 years ago? Thinking about Herbert and his grooves because of this review I did this week sent me back to one of the first features I did for Mixmag back in 2006. It was a pleasure to do and really, really stuck with me - especially his bit when we were sitting on the beach about how much sonic information was surrounding us in the moment.
👇🏻👇🏻
In the sleepy Kent seaside town of Whitstable – more famous for oysters than techno – Matthew Herbert owns a modest but pretty old coach house. It’s sweetly rustic outside, functionally modern and open-plan inside. A couple of young mums from down the road have popped in to say hello and have a cup of tea; Herbert is yawning, stretching and saving the tunes he was up late making on his laptop-powered mini studio. Musical equipment is dotted around; it could be any moderately untidy techno fan’s house. Herbert himself – in Fred Perry and low-hanging jeans – doesn’t look at all out of the ordinary for a 30-something with a raving past. He holds up an artillery shell.
“It’s from a Tornado bomber,” he explains, “in fact this one was actually salvaged from a battlefield in Iraq, so it’s been used in a combat situation. It’s so well-constructed, some of the most precise craftsmanship around; but look…” He slides off part of the brass casing, taps it on the table and an incredibly clear tone rings out. “It makes a really beautiful sound, like a Tibetan temple bell or something. So I’ve sampled that…” He hits a key on the laptop and a chiming melody starts up, building into a spacey groove. It is indeed rather beautiful. “…I’ve taken something designed only to kill and changed its purpose completely.” Herbert might appear ordinary superficially, but it swiftly becomes obvious that his image as dance’s nutty professor is not far wrong.
Matthew Herbert’s compulsions to experiment and play with ideas have been obvious throughout his career. He started playing raves on the West Country free party scene with Aphex Twin. His albums are some of electronic music’s most experimental (but still listenable) works. He talked Dizzee Rascal into coming on stage with the Herbert Big Band of veteran jazz players, and his discography veers between brutal techno, gorgeous electronica and sexy disco. He’s turned politics into theatre and protest into weird noises; when he played with the Big Band in Syria (“I really wanted to play in the Axis Of Evil!”), the moment when they created a rhythm track by ripping up the Daily Mail drove the crowd wild with shock and delight (“they could be arrested and tortured if they ripped up their own newspaper, so this was amazing for them”), and at a solo show in Australia the ravers’ biggest reaction was when he sampled himself destroying the sponsors’ video tape that has been projecting footage behind him. His new album Scale, overflows with wonky noises and stunning songs. It contains samples of 723 different objects and instruments – from meteorites to petrol pumps to underwater drumkits – and for every last one of these, he has an explanation connecting it into his wider worldview.
Looking more closely around Herbert’s living space, it becomes clear there are quite a lot of books on odd topics like the philosophy of food or the economics of armaments. It’s a perfect, still Summer day, though, and we decide to stroll down to the quiet beach nearby. As we go Herbert points out how even though it seems almost silent that every sound we hear could tell someone about our situation, from the health of the birds singing to the types of cars to the type of building work going on – and how each of those illustrates the economics and ecology of the area to someone with an expert ear.
It should be enough to give you a headache just thinking about it, but the weirdest thing of all is that listening to him explain all this is oddly enjoyable. Like his music and political performances, it’s funny rather than preachy, and it’s obvious that he does it because he enjoys it. Of course, being Herbert, he has a detailed explanation of how he combines fun and ideas in his records. “I like to construct each album like a hotel. You can just come in and have a drink at the bar and have a good time – but if you want, you can keep coming back to explore much further.” Behind every door – every sound or rhythm – is something going on, he says. Through track titles and information on his websites he gives away “keys” that let you uncover a little more of what’s going on and understand the whole thing a little more. In a world where downloading individual tracks dominates, this is a unique way to get people listening to and thinking about a whole album.
It’d be easy to characterise Matthew Herbert, dance music philosopher (and ‘hotelier’!), as a classic outsider. As we sit down on the beach to continue our chat, though, he insists he had a “totally normal middle-class Kent childhood; I was a very sociable kid, really”. At school, however, he avidly looked for connections between things: “it would always fascinate me if, say, I found out that the dinosaur triceratops is called that because it has three horns. Straight away that animal is connected with numbers, words, history, and just about every other subject.” He was addicted to music from infancy too, picking up new instruments at a rate of knots, and devouring jazz and classical theory.
His introduction to raving came at Exeter University, where he got stuck into the West Country free party scene along with Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert, Global Communication, and experimented with his own dance tunes. The scene was separate enough to be distinctive – “no-one could afford to get to Bristol let alone London” – and held together by the legendary Mighty Force shop and label, which brought in Chicago acid tunes and released Aphex Twin and Herbert’s first records. Herbert loved the exchange of ideas at those early free raves: “council estate lads from Plymouth or Exeter who you’d expect to be out stabbing people, dancing and talking with the landed gentry who’d given up their land for parties.” Promoters would get him to play his quirky, housey tracks after sunrise, “with everyone sitting around talking and feeling really… strange!”
Herbert kept with his organic, emotive sound – often featuring his partner Dani Sicilano’s mournful vocals – through the 90s, even as the underground favoured relentless instrumental techno. Fashions have caught up with him now - the classic Around The House and Bodily Functions albums sound incredibly fresh in today’s Minimal climate – but he has kept moving on in ever-weirder and more diverse directions. For his last album, the wonky and experimental Plat Du Jour,’ Matthew had a pie baked in the UK Foreign Office, flew it over to the site of a battle in the US Civil War, and got a guy who had served in the CIA in Vietnam under Nixon to shoot up the cake with an old Nazi officer’s pistol. The various connections between the factors in the pies destruction relates to the history of international conflict and the globalised food but just as importantly Matthew points out “it seemed like fun to go to such ridiculous lengths to blow up dear old mom’s apple pie!“
Perhaps this just sounds barking mad, but it also illustrates the method at the heart of Herbert’s madness. Life is a projectfor him, a series of schemes to have fun whilst developing his ideas about the connections between things. Almost all the money he makes from the remix and film soundtrack work which increasingly comes his way (he is currently pitching for his first Hollywood movie) is ploughed into further developing his unique musical and political ideas, and into supporting his fellow maverick artists through his Accidental, Soundslike and Lifelike labels.
The dedication to investing in creating great stuff is also important throughout Herbert’s extended musical family, including the promoters of the infamous Soundslike:Werk parties in London. These parties, as well as providing some of the most twisted electronic music and raving atmosphere in the capital – held in unusual venues like old cinemas and art centres, they are proper all-night raves where live electro, techno, grime and other, weirder electronic styles run together into non-stop delerium – are run in typically ethical fashion, with profit shares meaning that international DJs playing a couple of hours don’t get paid more than barstaff who sweat it out all night. This attention to detail means that, without being all knit-your-own-hippie-party worthy, that they can provide a genuinely mental atmosphere without the shadowy presence of rip-offs and psycho promoters - “club owners are so often a certain type of person,” says Herbert, “very very motivated by profit – it’s a very pure form of capitalism nowadays.”
That sort of commitment to making the party a collective effort is something he feels was strong in the free party scene til the Criminal Justice Act of 1994 put a stranglehold on the scene, sending soundsystems abroad or into clubs. “The potential is still there,” he says, “after all, how many people are out socialising, listening to music dancing themselves wild every weekend across the world? Millions? Tens of millions? But there’s very little sense of that having a purposenow.” One of the rare occasions where he seems less than enthusiastic in conversation is talking about purpose-built ‘clubbing bars’, which he has seen more than enough of in his years of gigging and DJing: “I would happily never set foot in another bar again; they’re all starting to look like such clichés now, no beer that’s not bottled, no sandwich that’s not a ciabatta…”.
This talk reminds us that it’s getting to lunchtime. We walk with crunching footsteps back up the pebbly beach back towards where Herbert’s hefty old BMW is parked, ready to head out to a country pub to eat. The cars (he has two souped-up Beemers), he admits, are one of the contradictions in his personal politics. “They’re my real weakness,” he laughs, “obviously I’m concerned with our oil addiction and global warming, but these do at least fit with my thoughts on craftsmanship. And they are very fast.” Rebuilt and hand-tuned, these cars will last a lifetime, unlike modern cars, designed for obsolescence and riddled with so much computer technology they’re nigh-impossible to fix.
That is one of the vital parts of Herbert’s philosophy. Whether it’s cars, political ideas or music, he believes in things built to last: antidotes to the ever-hungry and wasteful culture of constant consumption that seems to dominate now. And unlike politicised rock stars – the Bonos and Stings – he doesn’t believe in preaching; rather than tell you what you should be doing he wants to lead by example, showing that the good stuff needn’t be trash, and that thinking about your place in the world needn’t be a drag or the province of hippie dreamers. “Enjoying life,” he says, “doesn’t have to make you dumb; you don’t need to compromise, in life or in music.“
Over lunch we talk about the future. Planning long-term is out of the window right now, while he works out how to promote and tour the lush intricacies of Scale – he’s busy working out how to reproduce songs recorded with a 50-piece orchestra with 3 musicians. However as he is entirely his own boss, running his own labels and planning his own gigs, he is not bound by traditional music industry timetables, and is keen to keep the touring flexible to allow for all his other activities. He is increasingly being courted by the art world and is busy planning the first of his regular columns for a highbrow art magazine. If the aforementioned Hollywood soundtrack pitch comes off, that will take up his time for a while, otherwise he will get back to researching and reading, “looking for more new ways to make sounds nobody has ever heard before”. It’s not a bad life, being a mad scientist.

I used to think that personal computers would become a permanent daily fixture of life for most people, just like owning a TV has remained sticky across generations.
It probably would have worked out this way, too, were it not for the fact that smartphones essentially coopted the utility that most people get out of computers.
That was my mistake. That's usually my mistake when interpreting humanity: I assume people are more like me than they really are.
I find smartphones abhorrent. Not the technology itself; I think that's great. But the format. The user interface of a smartphone with only two or three buttons, various touch functions, and a tiny screen, versus that of a personal computer with a screen several times bigger and a mouse and proper keyboard, is just comically inferior. It's like the difference between a tricycle and a sportscar. As someone who types a lot and expects a fairly high degree of functionality out of websites, using a mobile device is like having my hands tied behind my back because in a metaphorical sense they are: The amount of functionality on mobile interfaces is just vastly, vastly smaller. And that feels suffocating, as if someone were to talk to you at a speed one-fifth of usual. I will straight up not have conversations with people on mobile because it's too frustrating to type out a paragraph the size of this one on a touchpad; I'll record them a voice note instead or just not say whatever I wanted to say.
But this isn't how most people have used computers. It's how early adopters have used computers; it's how power users have used computers; but it's not how "ordinary" people have used computers: They have used computers the same way they have used mobile devices, which is to say in very simplistic ways: mainly for games, video, and talking to friends, with a smattering of hold-by-the-hand service apps thrown in for functional measure, like Doordash, where all you really have to do is type your address and payment info one time, and then just push your finger onto the picture of the food you want to eat.
As a result of that fundamental simplicity of user intent, taking personal computing mainstream ended up not entrenching it into our lives like televisions but making it a transitional technology like cassette tapes. They heyday of the personal computer as a centerpiece of home life came and went in a single generation.
The good news is that there will still be personal computers.
The bad news is that, without permanent universal adoption by society, they will become relatively more expensive over time than they otherwise would have—and I use the word relatively here in its strict sense; the absolute degree of this relatively greater expense I fear will eventually become rather high. The other bad news is that web design will become even worse. Some of the insufferable web design we have to put up with today, like where you can't see more than a couple of sentences per screen, or where scrolling doesn't work the way it should, is a result of design that is prioritized for mobile. Many website proprietors just won't bother with maintaining two different versions of their sites; they'll lump everything into the mobile design and force everyone to use that.
This generational forgetting of personal computing is such a shame, because personal computers are unbelievably powerful. I spoke of TVs but I don't actually use a television: all my video needs are on my computer, with a screen big enough that I can actually see the details. And when it comes to my work, I would be lost without personal computing! It'd be literally impossible for me on a phone; I would have file cabinets full of papers, just like writers used to.
Of course, we shouldn't oversimplify "generations." Plenty of young people do use desktop or laptop PCs. It's just that, like us before them, they have always been the exception. There has never been a time when society as a whole was fluently using these powerful machines, even to my relatively modest level of expertise and fulsomeness, let alone to that of the true power users.

Luxury Built In Wardrobes: High-End Features to Consider
In today’s world, where luxury and functionality often go hand in hand, a built in wardrobe is much more than just a place to store clothes. It has become an essential element of modern interior design, offering homeowners the perfect blend of organisation, beauty, and convenience. For those who appreciate the finer things in life, a luxury built in wardrobe is the epitome of refined living, combining high-end materials, innovative design, and advanced technology to create a space that is both elegant and practical.
Gone are the days of cramped, cluttered closets. Luxury built in wardrobes Sydney offer a personalised approach to organising your personal belongings, with a focus on maximising space while elevating the aesthetic appeal of your home. These wardrobes can transform an ordinary room into a lavish sanctuary where every detail is meticulously crafted to suit your lifestyle. Whether you are looking to add a touch of opulence to your bedroom or create a dedicated dressing room that feels like a high-end boutique, a luxury wardrobe can redefine your daily routine.
1. Customisation and Personalisation: The Heart of Luxury Wardrobes
One of the most significant benefits of opting for a luxury built in wardrobe is the level of personalisation available. High-end wardrobes are not one-size-fits-all; they are crafted to suit your specific needs, preferences, and lifestyle. Customisation is key, allowing you to create a wardrobe that caters to the unique pieces in your collection – from evening gowns to tailored suits, handbags, and shoes.
Tailored Layouts: Consider how your wardrobe will be used on a daily basis. Do you need more hanging space for long dresses and suits, or are you looking for a combination of shelves and drawers for folded clothes? Custom layouts can maximise space and improve access to your clothing, making it easier to find what you need.
Flexible Interiors: Luxury wardrobes offer modular components, meaning you can easily adjust or change the interior layout over time. Adjustable shelves, rods, and dividers allow you to update your wardrobe as your clothing collection evolves.
Unique Compartments: High-end designs include specialised compartments such as pull-out pants racks, dedicated drawers for scarves, or custom dividers for accessories. This level of personalisation ensures everything has its place, making your wardrobe not only luxurious but also practical.
2. Premium Materials: Timeless Elegance and Durability
The materials you choose for your wardrobe make a huge difference in its overall appearance, longevity, and functionality. Luxury built in wardrobes use only the highest-quality materials that are not only visually appealing but also durable enough to withstand years of use.
Solid Timber: Wood remains a timeless choice for luxury wardrobes, with options like oak, walnut, or maple providing a natural, warm aesthetic. The grain of the wood adds character and richness to the space. High-end finishes such as matte, gloss, or satin lacquer provide a personalised touch, ensuring the wood complements your room’s décor.
Glass and Mirror Panels: Adding glass or mirrored elements to your wardrobe can open up the space and create a visually stunning effect. Not only do mirrors reflect light and make rooms feel larger, but they also add a sophisticated flair to the design. Frosted glass provides a balance between privacy and light diffusion, making it perfect for contemporary wardrobes.
Luxe Metals and Hardware: High-end wardrobes often feature bespoke handles, hinges, and fixtures made from materials like brushed stainless steel, gold, or matte black. These accents provide a sleek, modern finish that enhances the overall aesthetic of your wardrobe while maintaining the durability and longevity that is characteristic of luxury designs.
3. Integrated Lighting Solutions: Function Meets Aesthetics
Lighting plays a vital role in the functionality and ambience of a wardrobe, especially in high-end designs. Proper illumination makes it easier to see your clothes clearly, while also enhancing the luxurious feel of the space.
LED Strip Lighting: Discreet, energy-efficient LED lighting can be integrated along shelves, hanging rods, or the interior perimeter of the wardrobe. This soft, even light helps illuminate the contents of the wardrobe without harsh overhead lighting, creating a sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere.
Motion-Sensor Lighting: Motion sensors add a high-tech touch, automatically activating the lights when you open the wardrobe doors. This feature adds both convenience and luxury, ensuring your wardrobe is illuminated the moment you step inside, without the need to flick a switch.
Spotlights: For those who want to showcase certain items like shoes, bags, or accessories, adjustable spotlights can be incorporated into the design. These can be angled to highlight your most prized pieces, adding a gallery-like feel to your wardrobe.
4. Smart Technology Features: The Future of Luxury Wardrobes
One of the most exciting trends in luxury wardrobe design is the integration of smart technology. These features offer convenience, style, and innovation, making your wardrobe not only functional but also futuristic.
Motorised Drawers and Racks: Imagine having the ability to adjust your hanging rods or pull-out shelves with the touch of a button. Motorised systems allow you to customise the height and arrangement of storage components, offering an unprecedented level of comfort and flexibility.
Smart Mirrors: Smart mirrors are a game-changer for luxury wardrobes. These mirrors often feature LED lighting, magnification, and even touchscreen functionality, allowing you to check the weather, play music, or adjust the mirror's lighting to suit your preferences. Some models even have built in defoggers and display your wardrobe’s contents on-screen.
Climate Control: For those with a significant investment in high-end fashion, incorporating climate control systems into your wardrobe is essential. These systems regulate temperature and humidity to ensure delicate fabrics such as wool, silk, and leather are stored in optimal conditions, preventing damage or wear over time.
5. Sliding Doors and Concealed Storage: Clean Lines and Functionality
In luxury wardrobe design, functionality doesn’t just mean maximising storage; it also involves creating a space that feels elegant and uncluttered. Sliding doors and concealed storage solutions can help achieve this refined look while keeping your clothing organised and protected.
Sliding or Pocket Doors: Sliding doors are a popular feature in luxury wardrobes as they save space, especially in rooms where swing doors may be impractical. These doors glide open smoothly, offering easy access without sacrificing floor space. Custom finishes and handles ensure these doors match your wardrobe’s overall aesthetic.
Hidden Storage Compartments: Concealed storage is a hallmark of luxury design. Drawers that disappear into the wall or compartments that keep valuables out of sight add a touch of mystery and intrigue. These hidden elements contribute to the wardrobe’s clean lines and minimalist appeal.
6. Wardrobe Islands and Sitting Areas: Transforming the Closet Into a Sanctuary
When designing a luxury wardrobe, consider adding a wardrobe island or built in sitting area. These features elevate your closet from a simple storage space to a personal sanctuary.
Wardrobe Islands: A wardrobe island can serve multiple purposes. It provides extra storage with drawers or shelves, but it also functions as a flat surface for folding clothes, organising accessories, or packing for a trip. Islands can be custom-designed to fit seamlessly into the layout of your wardrobe, enhancing both function and style.
Sitting Areas: Adding a comfortable bench or sitting area creates a luxurious space where you can relax while dressing or putting on shoes. Upholstered seats, often matched with the wardrobe’s overall aesthetic, offer both convenience and style, turning your closet into a more enjoyable place to be.
7. High-End Closet Organisers: Precision and Practicality
In a luxury wardrobe, organisation goes beyond just hanging clothes. Every item, from shoes to jewellery, should have a designated space, and high-end organisers make that possible.
Pull-Out Shelves and Drawers: A luxury wardrobe often features pull-out shelves or drawer systems designed for easy access and maximum storage efficiency. These elements can store anything from folded sweaters to handbags, while also keeping them neatly organised and accessible.
Shoe Racks and Displays: A wardrobe worthy of luxury would not skimp on showcasing your shoe collection. Pull-out racks or custom shoe displays ensure your shoes are organised and easy to reach, while also serving as an attractive feature in the room.
Jewellery Drawers: Jewellery is best stored in specialised, soft-lined drawers that prevent tangling and protect your pieces from scratches. Custom jewellery organisers can include compartments for rings, necklaces, and watches, allowing you to store them in style.
A luxury built in wardrobe is more than just a storage solution – it’s an expression of personal style, sophistication, and efficiency. With high-end materials, cutting-edge technology, and customisation options, these wardrobes not only help you stay organised but also enhance the aesthetic and functionality of your home. Whether it’s through integrated lighting, climate control, or bespoke storage solutions, a luxury wardrobe is an investment in both your home and your lifestyle. By carefully selecting the right features, you can create a wardrobe that feels as luxurious as the items it holds.

What Makes an Alkaline Water Ionizer the Best Option? Health Advantages and Purchase Advice
Alkaline water has gained a lot of attention from health-conscious customers in recent years because of its possible advantages for hydration, wellbeing, and bodily balance. Using an alkaline water ioniser is a common method of accessing this cool choice. However, how can an ioniser affect your health and what does it actually do? This article will discuss the advantages of using an alkaline water ioniser, examine its operation, and provide advice on how to pick the best one for your need.
Tumblr media
An alkaline water ioniser: what is it?
A machine that turns regular tap water into alkaline, ionised water is called an alkaline water ionizer. The ioniser separates water into acidic and alkaline components using a procedure known as electrolysis. Beneficial elements like calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which are thought to be vital for good health, are abundant in the alkaline water. The ioniser, meantime, purges contaminants and adjusts pH levels to produce water that is more in line with the body's natural state. Advantages of Alkaline Ionised Water for Health
Drinking ionised alkaline water has several advantages that are increasingly being acknowledged, particularly by people who want to increase their energy, hydration, and general well-being. The following are some possible health benefits:
Improved Hydration
Because alkaline ionised water is thought to be easier for the body to absorb, it can hydrate you more efficiently than ordinary tap water. Those who live in hot regions or are active may find this improved hydration very helpful. Detoxification
Regularly consuming ionised alkaline water can aid in the body's removal of pollutants and poisons. This is because the negatively charged ions created by the ionisation process have antioxidant qualities that can counteract free radicals and lessen oxidative stress. Better Acid-Base Equilibrium
The pH levels of the body become unbalanced as a result of the acidic foods and drinks that many individuals consume.Increased Consumption of Minerals
Calcium, magnesium, and potassium are among the vital minerals that alkaline ionisers add to water. Strong bones, heart health, and muscular function are all supported by these minerals.
Possible Impact of Antioxidants
Molecular hydrogen, a potent antioxidant that may be present in ionised alkaline water, may help lower inflammation and offer extra cellular defence.
How to Pick the Best Ioniser for Alkaline Water
Choosing the best ioniser can be difficult because there are so many on the market. Consider the following factors: Quality of Filtration
As it eliminates pollutants and impurities from the water prior to ionisation, high-quality filtration is essential in an ioniser. To guarantee the highest level of purity, look for equipment that offers multi-stage filtration.
Range of pH
A broad pH range should be offered by the perfect ioniser so you can choose the alkalinity level that best meets your requirements. Additionally, some versions have acidic settings for cleaning the skin and the home.
Usability

DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS (DSR) 📚 Group, Sat Oct 26th, 2024 ... Saturday of The Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time, Year B
Reading 1
----------
EPH 4:7-16
Brothers and sisters:
Grace was given to each of us
according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
Therefore, it says:
He ascended on high and took prisoners captive;
he gave gifts to men.
What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended
into the lower regions of the earth?
The one who descended is also the one who ascended
far above all the heavens,
that he might fill all things.
And he gave some as Apostles, others as prophets,
others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers,
to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry,
for building up the Body of Christ,
until we all attain to the unity of faith
and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood
to the extent of the full stature of Christ,
so that we may no longer be infants,
tossed by waves and swept along by every wind of teaching
arising from human trickery,
from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming.
Rather, living the truth in love,
we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ,
from whom the whole Body,
joined and held together by every supporting ligament,
with the proper functioning of each part,
brings about the Body’s growth and builds itself up in love.

Responsorial Psalm
-----------------
PS 122:1-2, 3-4AB, 4CD-5
R. (1) Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
I rejoiced because they said to me,
“We will go up to the house of the LORD.”
And now we have set foot
within your gates, O Jerusalem.
R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
Jerusalem, built as a city
with compact unity.
To it the tribes go up,
the tribes of the LORD.
R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
According to the decree for Israel,
to give thanks to the name of the LORD.
In it are set up judgment seats,
seats for the house of David.
R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

Alleluia
--------
EZ 33:11
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked man, says the Lord,
but rather in his conversion that he may live.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel
--------
LK 13:1-9
Some people told Jesus about the Galileans
whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices.
He said to them in reply,
“Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way
they were greater sinners than all other Galileans?
By no means!
But I tell you, if you do not repent,
you will all perish as they did!
Or those eighteen people who were killed
when the tower at Siloam fell on them–
do you think they were more guilty
than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem?
By no means!
But I tell you, if you do not repent,
you will all perish as they did!”
And he told them this parable:
“There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard,
and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none,
he said to the gardener,
‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree
but have found none.
So cut it down.
Why should it exhaust the soil?’
He said to him in reply,
‘Sir, leave it for this year also,
and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it;
it may bear fruit in the future.
If not you can cut it down.’”

FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD
How often have we read about the latest and greatest way to lose weight? There is the eat all day long plan, ABS Diet for Women, The Bonus Years Diet with large chunks of chocolate and wine included, and the Busy Person’s Guide to Weight Loss with tips how to lose weight by eating at restaurants; to name but a few. But, the crème de la crème is with a simple diet pill.  By taking one of these small pills two or three times a day we are guaranteed to lose all those unwanted pounds. How many of us scoff when we read these claims and say to ourselves, “Eat healthy, eat less and exercise more if you want to lose weight.”
In today’s readings are we not challenged to consider the same course of action if we want to lead a more faith filled life in concert with Christ?  Is one of the keys to a healthy spiritual life to avoid being swept up in the waves and winds of every new key to wellbeing and to keep our spiritual life focused on prayer, forgiveness and living the truth in love?  In the parable of the fig tree, Luke reminds us that not only must we live a prayer-filled life, we need to have great patience when it comes to seeing the results of such a life.  For as with diets and fig trees, our deepening relationship with Christ does not produce results overnight.  Only by faithfully attending to our spiritual needs in prayer and exercising our faith through the good deeds we do for others and with great patience and understanding will the change we so deeply desire rise up within us and become permanent.

SAINT OF THE DAY
Saint Peter of Alcantara
(1499 – October 18, 1562)
Saint Peter of Alcantara’s Story
Peter was a contemporary of well-known 16th-century Spanish saints, including Ignatius of Loyola and John of the Cross. He served as confessor to Saint Teresa of Avila. Church reform was a major issue in Peter’s day, and he directed most of his energies toward that end. His death came one year before the Council of Trent ended.
Born into a noble family—his father was the governor of Alcantara in Spain—Peter studied law at Salamanca University, and at 16 he joined the so-called Observant Franciscans, also known as the discalced friars. While he practiced many penances, he also demonstrated abilities which were soon recognized. He was named the superior of a new house even before his ordination as a priest, was elected provincial at the age of 39, and he was a very successful preacher. Still, he was not above washing dishes and cutting wood for the friars. He did not seek attention; indeed, he preferred solitude.
Peter’s penitential side was evident when it came to food and clothing. It is said that he slept only 90 minutes each night. While others talked about Church reform, Peter’s reform began with himself. His patience was so great that a proverb arose: “To bear such an insult one must have the patience of Peter of Alcantara.”
In 1554, Peter received permission to form a group of Franciscans who followed the Rule of St. Francis with even greater rigor. These friars were known as Alcantarines. Some of the Spanish friars who came to North and South America in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries were members of this group. At the end of the 19th century, the Alcantarines were joined with other Observant friars to form the Order of Friars Minor.
As spiritual director to Saint Teresa, Peter encouraged her in promoting the Carmelite reform. His preaching brought many people to religious life, especially to the Secular Franciscan Order, the friars, and the Poor Clares.
Peter of Alcantara was canonized in 1669. His liturgical feast is celebrated on September 22.
Reflection
----------
Poverty was a means and not an end for Peter. The goal was following Christ in ever greater purity of heart. Whatever obstructed that path could be eliminated with no real loss. The philosophy of our consumer age—you are worth what you own—may find Peter of Alcantara’s approach severe. Ultimately, his approach is life-giving while consumerism is deadly.
