Your nails are crusted in dirt as you kneel in the garden. You grunt as you wrestle the roots of weed from the soil and toss it aside. You wipe your forehead with the back of your glove as you hear the screen door snap shut. Your grandmother stands on the stoop, her hand on her achy hip.
âDid you hear, dearie?â She calls in her creaky voice. âSomeoneâs moved into Clydeâs old house.â
âHuh?â You catch your breath as you gather up the broken weeds, âitâs half ash.â
âSuppose theyâll fix it up,â she mutters as she leans on the narrow iron rail along the side of the backsteps.
âSuppose,â you agree as you stuff the green and brown foliage into the paper bag for the compost. âWho told you that?â
âI was just talking to Lynette on the phone. She also said Mollyâs having her fifth.â
Five kids? You hide your chagrin at the thought. You donât mind kids but thatâs a lot to handle, let alone the pregnancies. Molly balloonâs up so big she can hardly move. Her last shower, she sat the whole time. Not much different than you, you guess. You sat in the corner and watched the silly games
âThatâs exciting,â you say as you stand and dust off your knees, crumpling the top of the bag in your other hand.
âAh, Iâm sure you woulda loved to have four sisters? Maybe brothers? Itâs a pity your mother never gave me any more grandchildren.â
âMmm,â you suppress a frown, âyeah, wellâŠâ
âAnyhow, enough talk of spoiled milk,â she waves off, âI got a pie in the oven. You can take it over the Clydeâs once it cools.â
âI⊠why would I do that?â
âOh my, donât be ridiculous. We have a new neighbour, we have to be polite and welcome them to the village. Itâs probably a nice family, or maybe someone your age. A friend?â She suggests, âIâd do it myself but I donât think Iâd make the walkâŠâ she looks down at her hip, theatrically rubbing it.Â
âRight,â you agree, the prospect of strangers making your tummy lurch. âWell, that pie will take some time.â
âLong enough for you to put on something clean,â she tuts as she looks down at your dirty jeans, âmy lord, what would they think?â
âYes, gramma, Iâll change, once I get this in the compost.â
âGood,â she smirks triumphantly and turns to swing open the screen door, the hinges whining shrilly.
You sniff and cross the yard. Itâs not often thereâs new faces in Hammer Ford. The village is a tourist trap at best and not a very lively one. Everyone calls each other by name and itâs second nature to stop and say hi. But thatâs because you know each other; you have for years.
You lift the lid on the large bin and empty the bag into it. You could always lie and hide the pie in some bushes. Your deceit wouldnât be hidden for long. Even in this sleepy place, word travels fast and someone always seems to be watching and waiting to pass it on.

You head out with the pie in a basket like some fairytale. Youâre only short a red hood and a big bad wolf. You set off down the country roads, following the lazy curves towards the horizon. Itâs after noon and the sunâs turning mild as it drifts across its pale canvas.
The old homestead is the second closest to your grandmotherâs. The homes around Hammer Ford or sprawled out amid the plowed fields and green meadows. The cluster of old pines loom over you as you pass in there shadow and crest the hill that marks the edge of the property. Clydeâs tractor used to sit there, just by the broken down fence.
Ahead, down another stretch of road, this path unpaved, stands the decrepit house. The tragedy still singes the memories of the villagers. That night comes back to you in a blaze of orange and the smell of cinder. Poor old Clyde was buried behind Sacred Stave church.
You search the overgrown grass for a sign of life. Thereâs a black truck by the caved in garage but thatâs about it. It might not be a family. Itâs a lot of work to do with little ones around. If anything, it would only be the parents as they rebuild. Your mind wanders, wondering who would buy the old farm and why.
You come down the path, just along the ditch that dips behind a cluster of brambles. Thereâs a snap and a crack and you skid to a halt on the stones. You spin and look around, a heavy breath pluming into the air. Like the fire reawakened.
âCan I help you?â The deep timbre rolls through you and you step back on your heel as you face the man down in the ditch. He peers up at you above the scraggly top of the brambles.
âUh,â you gulp and stare at him dumbly. He might think youâre lost. Or worse, trespassing.
His hair is short, only an inch on top and shaved even shorter around the sides. His beard is thick around his mouth, growing sparse across his cheeks, and two vibrant blue eyes beam back at you. The way he looks at you makes you want to shrink away. You can sense the city radiating off of him. He scares you.
âHello? Whatâs up?â He waves as if trying to wake you up.
âUm, pie?â You say, cringing at your own speechlessness.
âPie,â he repeats flatly.
You hold up the basket and blink. You never were very good at introductions. You were the only girl at school without friends. You were just sort of there.
âPie,â you echo once more and hold out the basket.
He tilts his head, curiously, and huffs. He juts out his jaw and grunts as he pushes the brambles apart and climbs out of the ditchy. His denim jacket is streaked in dirty and pollen.
He takes the basket by the handle, his rough finger brushing yours. He peels back the cloth and to peek inside, âpie.â He utters the syllable a fourth time between you.
âYeah,â your voice is wispy and small. âBye.â
You let out a strained breath and spin, keeping yourself from breaking into a sprint. You stomp away frantically, smacking yourself internally for being so awkward. Well, maybe thatâs a good thing. Heâll have no reason to talk to you ever again.

Arapaho Creation Story
The Arapaho Creation Story is the account of how the world was made from the mud at the bottom of the endless waters by Father (also given as Pipe Person in some versions) with the help of the duck and the turtle. The story is similar to one of the versions of the Cheyenne Creation Story.

Both of these accounts are also similar to the Lakota Sioux Creation Story as well as those of other Native American nations, many of which begin with the world as a great expanse of water and feature a central character â usually supernatural â who brings the earth into being with the help of waterfowl or the turtle. The Arapaho tale is also similar to that of the Cheyenne and others in that there is no mention of the concept of 'evil' or corruption. The Father, inspired by the Grandfather above, creates a perfect world, completely in balance. Any aspects of life humans will later find objectionable are entirely so because of their interpretation, not because of any flaws in the creation itself.
In some versions of the story, the Grandfather is the Creator God Be He Teiht (the Great Spirit) and Father (or Pipe Person) is understood as the First Arapaho, meaning the spirit of the Arapaho people, not the first man. In other versions, Father seems to be the Creator God and Grandfather is not mentioned or the Father figure goes by the name of Flat Pipe or, as noted, Pipe Person. There are also variations in how humans, plants, and animals are made in different versions, but, in all, the world is created for the greater good and its inhabitants, all related as family, are expected to share it generously with each other.
Versions of the Story & Arapaho Religion
These different versions of the Arapaho Creation Story are all fragmented and some incomplete because they were passed down through oral transmission by the people's storytellers, and so many of these were killed by US troops and settlers in the latter part of the 19th century â in conflicts such as the Sand Creek Massacre â or died of diseases or malnutrition on reservations that the story was almost lost completely. The best-known and most complete version comes from Traditions of the Arapaho by George A. Dorsey and Alfred L. Kroeber in 1903, given below.
In this version of the tale, after the duck and turtle have brought up the primordial mud, Father creates the earth and then the sun and moon before creating humans out of clay. In another version, he accomplishes this through prayer-thought â purposeful thought generating change â and literally thinks the world into being. All things, therefore, come from the mind of the Father, and are all closely related. This is a core belief of Arapaho spirituality â the close connection of all living things that inhabit the World House together. In the World House, every living thing is a brother or sister and all children of the same Father. This belief informed Arapaho rituals, including the Sun Dance, as well as the "medicine" objects (spiritual artifacts) the people carried. Scholar Loretta Fowler comments:
the Arapaho origin story focuses on Pipe Person's creation of the earth from mud below the surface of an expanse of water. Pipe Person, through prayer-thought, created all life, including the first Arapahos. Arapahos henceforth kept a replica of the Flat Pipe as a symbol of their covenant with the life force or power on which Pipe Person drew. Rites centered on the pipe bundle helped ensure the success of Arapahos generally and of individuals specifically. Seven men's and seven women's medicine bags contained objects and implements that symbolized forms of power, and these passed from one custodian to another. Prayer-thoughts could affect events and lives, and the sincerity of a petitioner's prayer-thought was validated by sacrifices of property or of the body by flesh offerings and fasting. (1)
Although the Arapaho observed the Sun Dance, they did not engage in the self-torture aspect of that ritual as the Sioux and other Plains Indians did. The "flesh offerings" Fowler mentions would be sacrifices of an individual nature, though still performed for the greater good. The Sun Dance was known as the Offerings Lodge to the Arapaho and, instead of self-torture, they would donate personal items or space (land) to the community. The flat pipe was (and still is) central to the Offerings Lodge ceremony â as it is to other Arapaho rituals â as it symbolizes their connection to the Creator just as the Sioux ceremonial pipe does to that nation. When the Arapaho separated into Northern and Southern, and were then forcibly relocated to reservations, the Northern Arapaho kept the flat pipe with them, and the Southern Arapaho kept the sacred stones symbolizing the pipe. These are still used in rituals today.

In yet another version of the Arapaho Creation Story, this one incomplete, the flat pipe is featured prominently. In this tale, the Creator God is known as Flat Pipe and he walks about on the endless water with his pipe (a flat pipe) looking for some place where he can safely rest it. His entire purpose in creating the world is for a place to securely rest the pipe because, from this pipe, he will draw the power to begin the work of creation. He appeals to a flock of ducks flying past and they dive down into the water for him, bringing up some mud. This is not enough to create land from, however, and so he then asks various other creatures for help. One by one, they dive into the deep, six times, but none of them are able to reach the bottom. The seventh time, the turtle goes and brings back the right amount of mud for creation to begin.
Although the name of the main character and certain details differ in these versions, the central message remains the same: as all things were brought forth by the Creator, all are related to each other as family. One should therefore treat the earth, plants, animals, and others as kindly as one would one's own blood relatives because, in fact, that is what they all are.

Legal Plunder: Indiana Police Prey On Packages Transiting Huge FedEx Hub

From a federal government operating far beyond the bounds of the Constitution to law enforcement agencies routinely entering private property without warrants, tyranny takes many forms in the United States. However, few are as shocking to the sensibilities as civil asset forfeiture, the controversial practice that empowers police to seize money, cars, trucks, houses or anything else they merely accuse of having a link to criminal activity â regardless of whether the property owner is charged with a crime.
Civil asset forfeiture is an affront to anyone whoâs sincerely committed to the American justice systemâs cornerstone presumption of innocence. With law enforcement typically keeping some or all of the assets that are seized, the practice has rightly been called âpolicing for profit.â
Iâve previously examined the raw tyranny of civil asset forfeiture, spotlighting the story of a Mississippi man who took $42,300 in cash to Houston with the intent of buying a second semi truck for his fledgling trucking business, only to have it seized â or, in legal jargon, âforfeitedâ â by Harris County police, who pulled him over for allegedly following the vehicle in front of him too closely.
Now Iâm compelled to share a new example of this legalized theft â the most brazenly unjust and opportunistic one Iâve encountered yet: In an ongoing, multi-million-dollar racket in Indianapolis, police are routinely seizing cash they find in FedEx packages that happen to be routed through that companyâs second-largest hub.

Paying for fanfics is bad due to the legalities of making money off of other people's work (intellectual propert). Like people got dmca notices for posting fanfics and the main defense was pretty much 'we aren't making money, so don't sue us'. (Early 2000's with Anne Rice for example).
I'm not sure about legalities of rpf though, but personally I wouldn't try it.

work week was pretty hectic, like i barely had decent sleep since I am juggling between my usual work and side hustle plus i had post-grad studies. no complaints. I am taking it all in while I can still.
the new siblings are doing just fine. they are attending some sort of a pre-kinder schooling which by tsinoy standards is getting your child to practice math as early as possible.
today, before leaving for work, i kissed both of the kids on the forehead that which caught my parents by surprise. i guess, even without blood relations, love grows. admittedly i am getting fond of the kids and is behaving like the protective kuya that i should be.
work and school done, i went for a round of tennis. more of a practice actually as I am getting rusty. the coach whom we are training with was kind of masungit, like he was expecting me to be at par with him which I cannot as I am just a recreational player. but then, he could be having a bad day for all we know.?

dinner was at my kuya's house and surprise of all surprises, he treated us for dinner as in walang pot luck! i mean it was take out food but then he paid? wow. good character development, kuya.
and speaking of kuya, he was mentioned in passing that our uncle who is a mayor of this certain town in a not so distant province was egging him to run as his vice mayor and kuya was seriously thinking about it since he has a propert there and votes in that place as well.

I am confused here because I think the lab being involved in the Byers family situation pretty much explains things better than all of the stuff happening as a consequence. With the 'lab was involved, too' scenario you just have to explain things and expand on them. Because the other scenario too depending on several consequences; Vecna finding out Will's existence on that very same night and ending up lucky that he somehow found (luckily) a person who was similar to him with potential unlocked powers, El somehow recognizing Will as a consequence because that's ''what was expected from her powers'', Brenner onlu faking Will's death and not bothering with the other victim's deaths because the other victims did not matter so it was a consequence. Will somehow manipulating things in the UD because... consequence and random things, it just happened that way plotwise. Like, isn't that worse as a plot explanation?

But you'd need to explain the Byers being completely and totally unaware of anything about the lab at all. That is key here. That is a LOT that they just "oopsie forgot to mention".
It's pretty clear the Byers had no idea about the lab or anything strange in season 1. It's clear Joyce didn't know Brenner or the lab in general while she was there. Lonnie is a deadbeat scumbag living in Indianapolis, too absentee to even sell off his kids.
How do you connect the dots of the Byers being totally oblivious to all this stuff in season 1? I can't wrap my head around this.
Hopper had a whole box of Hawkins lab files under his cabin about all the tests and experiments going on there with Terry and the kids, but he neglected to ever mention Joyce, Lonnie, Will, or Jonathan being wrapped up in all this stuff?
When I read those theories, it just reads as
Joyce/Lonnie got Will involved with the lab
Henry/El meet Will
???
Memory loss arc because none of the Byers have ever acknowledged any connections with the lab. Henry yes. The lab, no.
It might just be a difference in preference, but I find it much more believable that:
Vecna/the Demogorgon was chasing El that night
Either on purpose or accident, switched targets to Will and dragged him into the Upside Down
Upon his capture, discovers Will is a perfect kind of host/sympathizer and spends at least 1 season so far trying to keep Will chained down and will probably do so again
As for El's role in all this, I detailed it in my other post. I concluded the most likely scenario being El saw Will getting kidnapped either in person or through her mind's eye. All we can say for sure is that she recognized him. They can't have known each other or met more than once because we can't ignore the fact that Will did not know her prior and continues not to know her for another whole season.
This mixture of coincidence/accident turned into purposeful action on Henry's part makes a lot more sense to me.
Imagine this scenario.
It's in the middle of covid. You're confined to your house but you REALLY want this cool fancy cup you found online. You order the cup. They deliver the wrong cup. You're annoyed but you decide to use the cup anyway. Come to find out, this wrong cup is actually super awesome. Maybe it's not as expensive and cool as the cup you wanted, but it suits you just fine. Every now and then, the delivery driver tries to break into your house and take your cup back and eventually they succeed. It pisses you off because you actually liked that wrong cup and want it back. You still don't have the actual cup you originally ordered so you just sit in your house pissed off, trying to find ways to get back at the delivery driver for taking your wrong cup. Something like that.
That is how I think this situation happened.
Henry wanted El. He sent his delivery driver (the demogorgon) to get her. The Demogorgon delivered the wrong kid. Henry accepted it and just went with it and came to found out, this kid is also pretty good for what he wanted to do. He smacked a "MY PROPERTY" stamp on Will's forehead and got pissed when they took him back. Cue the rest of the series.
I think people who believe absolutely EVERYTHING that happened to Will was an accident are wrong. I also don't think the Byers have been involved in all this from the very start, it's too much missing information to fill in.
I don't remember the exact wording, but in the scripts it said something like, "Not siblings by blood, but by circumstances". That one line explains the entirety of WillEl and Will's involvement in this stuff.
You know how El is the fish out of water when it comes to normal every life? Well Will is the opposite. He's the fish out of water when it comes to the Upside Down mess and lab stuff. Living a normal life with friends and family was not El's reality. But it's her reality now. The lab/Henry was not Will's story, but it's becoming his story whether he likes it or not.
I know ST has plotholes and stuff they fill in after the fact, but it's usually to the benefit of a story they're trying to tell. They added onto El's backstory to explain the man behind the Mind Flayer. The backstory of the lab and them being trapped there together and him pushing her to her limits and getting banished to the Upside Down... that's crucial stuff that NEEDED the lab to be involved. (I'm of the firm belief subject 0 or 1 was always planned, though they could've executed it better)
Will being tied to the lab isn't necessary in comparison. You'd not only have to explain why he'd be there in the first place, but also his parents. To our knowledge, Hawkins publicly accepted adults for MKUltra.
I think in the books, it specifically states adults without dependents/children are eligible so Joyce would've been rejected and so would Lonnie (books are only half canon so eh). MKUltra was performed on adults. The child program was secret. Those kids weren't recruited off the street, they were taken under extraordinary circumstances and even reported missing.
You'd have to introduce an entirely new subplot like "So, actually when Will was younger they gave parents money to bring their kids in for some tests. And Joyce/Lonnie did this once. He met El and Henry. And then nothing happened and everyone forgot about the lab and the weird test they went to take."
Or "Joyce was a part of MKUltra or almost was but then returned to a normal life after" when we know good and well Brenner is not above kidnapping newborn infants from his previous test subjects. Will 100% would've been taken just like El.
Instead, just saying "Will quite literally got wrapped up in all of this due to mistaken identity -a common occurrence between him and El btw- and has never known peace since because the mistaken identity situation actually lead to actual similarities between the two." makes the most sense, connects all the dots, and doesn't need the writers to write a contrived reason why Will was already involved with the lab before.
It'd be like you met someone on the street and they look just like you. You joke around like "What if we were long lost siblings lol" and then it turns out you actually are. Not saying Will and El are blood related, just that concept of something so surface level ending up being deeper.
How I see it, Will and El's stories are almost exactly the same but in reverse. El's life started in the lab/supernatural and it's slowly becoming more normal. Will's life was completely normal and now it's been slowly seeping into the supernatural.
El was kidnapped by the lab/Brenner. Will was kidnapped by the Upside Down/Henry.
El's story has been about her building it up piece by piece, gaining everything in life she lacked. Will's life, while not great, was once whole and has been falling apart piece by piece in comparison.
When El was with the group, Will was missing. When Will was in the group, El was missing.
To me, if Will's backstory is tied into the lab, the very foundations that make Will and El mirror images of each other weakens.

"You didn't say that when you barged into the bathroom earlier" Lucy huffed without turning away from the telly. "That bath is still gross as well, so you were clearly talking some bullshit."
"No, I mean, it's your turn to cook dinner" Martin clarified. "From the cleaning roster I wrote up. Jordan's already doing all the cleaning in the place, seeing as he's been at that easel for the better part of the day!"
This is worse than being at home with my mum's house! I feel like a teenager having to clean this massive place!

However, few are as shocking to the sensibilities as civil asset forfeiture, the controversial practice that empowers police to seize money, cars, trucks, houses or anything else they merely accuse of having a link to criminal activityâregardless of whether the property owner is charged with a crime.
Civil asset forfeiture is an affront to anyone whoâs sincerely committed to the American justice systemâs cornerstone presumption of innocence. With law enforcement typically keeping some or all of the assets that are seized, the practice has rightly been called âpolicing for profit.â
Iâve previously examined the raw tyranny of civil asset forfeiture, spotlighting the story of a Mississippi man who took $42,300 in cash to Houston with the intent of buying a second semi truck for his fledgling trucking business, only to have it seizedâor, in legal jargon, âforfeitedââby Harris County police, who pulled him over for allegedly following the vehicle in front of him too closely.
Now Iâm compelled to share a new example of this legalized theftâthe most brazenly unjust and opportunistic one Iâve encountered yet: In an ongoing, multi-million-dollar racket in Indianapolis, police are routinely seizing cash they find in FedEx packages that happen to be routed through that companyâs second-largest hub.
Like bears wading into a river teeming with salmon, state and local Indiana police officers routinely stride up to the conveyer belts at FedExâs sprawling Indianapolis facility, where tens of thousands of packages flow by every hour, pouncing when they see a package with traits that meet their absurdly broad definition of âsuspicious.â
