But I wanted her (knockoff playline dolls)
I don't use Temu! Temu bad! Temu steals your info! Temu -
Tumblr media
Ooh. She's pretty. Yeah. I caved.
So technically, Defa Lucy is a Mexican Walmart knockoff of Barbie, but plastic playline knockoffs aren't viewed generally with the same level of distaste as recast BJDs. Others have their reasons, but mine goes a little something like this:
These toys are made with plastic injection molding machines. Here's a sales pitch video by Fit Precision Molding, a company that makes and sells these machines:
youtube
These machines are NOT cheap. This is the CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine of toys. $20K (USD) for ONE machine is a starter price - and that's if you can get it cheap from China. So a company that has decided to create their own knockoff line also tends to have the funds to pick a legal fight with, say, Mattel (MGAE and Bratz). This is not a backyard art theft sort of operation. This is easily a $200K operation just for the machines.
Granted, YMY still got smacked good and hard by the company that makes Nendoroids, and they deserved to get smacked, cuz stealing is bad.
HOWEVER...
Playline companies steal from each other all the time (cough cough Barbie Extra trying to lift the LOL OMG line like that hot mess of clashing color outfits and ridiculous plastic jewelry can compare to the cohesiveness of MGAE looks cough). Generally, if one company is mad enough, they'll sue the "stealing" company pretty quickly, and the marketplace will figure it out.
The other reason it doesn't bother me is cuz I figure these companies kinda have it coming.
So when China opened up for business, companies all over the world ran there like their houses were on fire, cuz China so cheap! Such affordable labor force. Much lack of regulation - environmental or occupational safety. Companies initially balked at employees being required to join a union, but they were immediately comforted by the fact that Chinese labor unions do exactly squat for people. The unions exist solely to steal from the employees and transfer that money to members of government.
When you open a business in China, you're required to bring on a local company as a joint venture (same in Saudi Arabia, by the way), and the Chinese company will steal with delight and abandon - as actively encouraged by the Chinese government and CCP. Companies have whined extensively about this to their respective governments. "I want cheap labor force! I want to destroy water supply! I want to pollute their air! But they're stealing from me! Waaaaah!"
Well - you get what you pay for, now don't you. You want access to exploited labor forces (forced labor for Uyghurs in the Xinjiang province, imported North Korean slaves). You want rights to dump your toxic crap into the Chinese water supply and the Chinese air without repercussions - which travels over to California and gets trapped in LA, by the way (air moves, idiots).
You'll have to forgive me if my sympathies are not particularly high for you.
This sucks for anyone trying to be an ethical consumer. Walk into your local store and flip over any box. They all say "Made in China." All of them.
This is why even though dolls like Momoko and Obitsu are more expensive, I am willing to pay to import them. Japanese wages suck, but at least they're making some money. The dolls are made in Japan. That's why they cost as much as they do. If you want to be an ethical doll collector, your options are basically BJDs and Japanese dolls (maybe Korean). Anything on US shelves is made in China and therefore unethical AF.

i went to a used book sale today... procured:
railroad color history: new york central railroad (brian solomon & mike schafer) — i'm not actually that into trains but it appealed to me.
the complete guide to the soviet union (jennifer louis & victor louis) — travel guide from 1980
an anthology including the big sleep (raymond chandler), "the undignified melodrama of the bone of contention" (dorothy l. sayers), "the arrow of god" (leslie charteris), "i can find my way out" (ngaio marsh), instead of evidence (rex stout), "rift in the loot" (stuart palmer & craig rice), "the man who explained miracles" (john dickson carr), & rebecca (daphne du maurier) (i already have this one..) — it's volume 2 of something (a treasury of great mysteries) which annoys me but whatever
an anthology including "godmother tea" (selena anderson), "the apartment" (t. c. boyle), "a faithful but melancholy account of several barbarities lately committed" (jason brown), "sibling rivalry" (michael byers), "the nanny" (emma cline), "halloween" (mariah crotty), "something street" (carolyn ferrell), "this is pleasure" (mary gaitskill), "in the event" (meng jin), "the children" (andrea lee), "rubberdust" (sarah thankam mathews), "it's not you" (elizabeth mccracken), "liberté" (scott nandelson), "howl palace" (leigh newman), "the nine-tailed fox explains" (jane pek), "the hands of dirty children" (alejandro puyana), "octopus vii" (anna reeser), "enlightenment" (william pei shih), "kennedy" (kevin wilson), & "the special world" (tiphanie yanique) — i guess they're all short stories published in 2020 by usamerican/canadian authors
an anthology including the death of ivan ilyich (leo tolstoy) (i have already read this one..), the beast in the jungle (henry james), heart of darkness (joseph conrad), seven who were hanged (leonid andreyev), abel sánchez (miguel de unamuno), the pastoral symphony (andré gide), mario and the magician (thomas mann), the old man (william faulkner), the stranger (albert camus), & agostino (alberto moravia)
the ambassadors (henry james)
the world book desk reference set: book of nations — it's from 1983 so this is kind of a history book...
yet another fiction anthology......... including the general's ring (selma lagerlöf), "mowgli's brothers" (rudyard kipling), "the gift of the magi" (o. henry) (i have already read this one..), "lord mountdrago" (w. somerset maugham), "music on the muscatatuck" (jessamyn west), "the pacing goose" (jessamyn west), "the birds" (daphne du maurier), "the man who lived four thousand years" (alexandre dumas), "the pope's mule" (alphonse daudet), "the story of the late mr. elvesham" (h. g. wells), "the blue cross" (g. k. chesterton), portrait of jennie (robert nathan), "la grande bretèche" (honoré de balzac), "love's conundrum" (anthony hope), "the great stone face" (nathaniel hawthorne), "germelshausen" (friedrich gerstäcker), "i am born" (charles dickens), "the legend of sleepy hollow" (washington irving), "the age of miracles" (melville davisson post), "the long rifle" (stewart edward white), "the fall of the house of usher" (edgar allan poe) (i have already read this one..), the voice of bugle ann (mackinlay kantor), the bridge of san luis rey (thornton wilder), "basquerie" (eleanor mercein kelly), "judith" (a. e. coppard), "a mother in mannville" (marjorie kinnan rawlings), "kerfol" (edith wharton), "the last leaf" (o. henry), "the bloodhound" (arthur train), "what the old man does is always right" (hans christian anderson), the sea of grass (conrad richter), "the sire de malétroit's door" (robert louis stevenson), "the necklace" (guy de maupassant) (i have already read this one..), "by the waters of babylon" (stephen vincent benét), a. v. laider (max beerbohm), "the pillar of fire" (percival wilde), "the strange will" (edmond about), "the hand at the window" (emily brontë) (i have already read this one..), & "national velvet" (enid bagnold) — why are seven of these chapters of novels....? anyway fun fact one of the compilers here also worked on the aforementioned mystery anthology. also anyway Why did i bother to write all that ☹️
fundamental problems of marxism (georgi plekhanov) — book about dialectical/historical materialism which is published here as the first volume of something (marxist library) which is kind of odd to me tbh
one last (thankfully tiny) anthology including le père goriot (honoré de balzac) & eugénie grandet (honoré de balzac)

Timeline of passenger railroad service and the railroad yard in Las Vegas
Railroad Yards, c. 1907. Railroad Shops and Yards, c. 1912.
‘01: William A. Clark forms the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad Co (SPLA&SL) for the purpose of building a railroad line from the docks in San Pedro, CA, to the railroad hub in Salt Lake City. Clark and Union Pacific (UP) became equal partners in the company. Construction begins with a planned route through Las Vegas.
‘02: Clark buys Las Vegas Ranch and water rights from Helen Stewart, gains right of way for SPLA&SL line.
‘04: Railroad tracks reach Las Vegas.
‘05: “Silver spike” near Jean on 1/30 marks completion of the line. The railroad forms subsidiary Las Vegas Land & Water Co. (LVL&W) for the city's land and water sales. Las Vegas Depot opens 5/1.
‘06: Las Vegas Ice House built; destroyed in fire and rebuilt two years later.
‘09: SPLA&SL begins construction of shops and roundhouse; completed two years later.
‘16: Company renamed Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad (LA&SL).
‘21: UP buys Clark's share of LA&SL; name and logo are phased out. UP calls the line the Salt Lake Route.
‘22: Railroad workers strike, Jul-Sep. After the strike UP closed the machine shop; machinery was shipped to Los Angeles, and the buildings were torn down.
‘36: UP debuts Streamliner “City of Las Vegas” train, L.A. to Chicago.
‘40: Union Pacific Depot opens; first completely air conditioned station in the U.S.
‘48: UP and Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce launch Desert Sea News Bureau (aka Las Vegas News Bureau) to promote Las Vegas. UP’s partnership in the effort ends a year later.
‘52: UP agrees to sell the LVL&W to Las Vegas Valley Water District. With completion of the same in two years UP and LVL&W turn over all water distribution properties, springs, wells, pumping and storage facilities, and water bearing lands. The RR yard remains.
‘54: UP builds landmark water tower.
‘56: UP debuts Aerotrain “City of Las Vegas”; replaced with a conventional train after 9 months. Decline in patronage caused reduction to one train a day each way by late 50s. “City of Las Vegas” renamed “Las Vegas Holiday Special” in ‘62.
‘70: UP depot closes; demolished in Nov.
‘71: Union Plaza opens on site of former depot; Amtrak service established and passenger service through Las Vegas suspended.
‘79: Amtrak launches Desert Wind, first regularly scheduled service since ‘71.
‘88: Plans to move the rail yard out of downtown finalized; UP owns 320 acres in the area at this time. Ice House destroyed by fire.
‘91: UP water tower demolished.
‘92: Cleanup of a 61-acre section of railroad yard overseen by Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP).
‘97: Amtrak discontinues Desert Wind, last scheduled passenger service.
‘98: NDEP signed off on soil cleanup; groundwater in 2000. The city acquired the property in 2000 and began the development of Symphony Park.

Spotify’s The Ringer Announces Summer Ringer Residency In LA
Tumblr media
Before COVID, podcasts were generating significant interest in live events. For example, Slate had its Slate Day in Manhattan a few years ago with multiple podcasts being recorded with a live audience, as have other networks. There is On Air Fest in multiple locations. Live podcasting events are good for the industry as a whole. To continue that trend, Spotify’s The Ringer has announced that tickets are now on sale for a “Ringer Residency” taking place this summer at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, from Tuesday, June 18th through Tuesday, July 30th. A variety of Ringer shows will be featured for live podcast recordings, including The Ringer NBA Show (June 18th), Talk the Thrones (June 25th), The Big Picture (July 9th), The Ringer-Verse (July 17th), Wrighty’s House (July 26th) and The Ringer Fantasy Football Show(July 30th).
“We're thrilled to bring our shows to live audiences in L.A. this summer," said Sean Fennessey, Head of Content for The Ringer and host of The Big Picture, "to continue the great work of turning all the parasocial relationships listeners have formed with our hosts into real-world social relationships."
For more information, please visit theringer.com/events.
Here is a description of each show’s individual programming are as follows:
The Ringer NBA Show: The Ringer NBA squad provides insight and analysis every NBA fan needs. Come kick off the Ringer Residency on June 18thwith Group Chat hosts Justin Verrier, Wosny Lambre, Rob Mahoney, and special guests to hear their thoughts on the NBA Finals, the upcoming draft, and much more. General admission. Fully seated. All ages.
Talk the Thrones: Mallory Rubin, Joanna Robinson and Chris Ryan head back to Westeros to bring you Talk the Thrones live. Join our trio of dragon riders as they discuss “House of the Dragon” Season 2. General admission. Fully seated. All ages.
The Big Picture: Join The Ringer's Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins for a live recording of their podcast, The Big Picture, as they discuss movies you need to see, alongside special guest and Ringer colleague Chris Ryan. General admission. Fully seated. All ages.
The Ringer-Verse: Join The Ringer-Verse crew for a night of all things nerd culture and fandom. The Ringer's expert superfans will hit the stage to converse about your favorite shows and movies happening this summer. General admission. Fully seated. All ages.
Wrighty's House: Join former Arsenal and England National Team striker Ian Wright for a live edition of his Ringer podcast, Wrighty's House, where he discusses the latest football headlines, as well as his cultural passions. General admission. Fully seated. 18+ only.
The Ringer Fantasy Football Show: Join The Ringer's fantasy football experts Danny Heifetz, Danny Kelly and Craig Horlbeck for a live recording of The Ringer Fantasy Football Show. The guys will talk training camp, fantasy football drafts and sleepers. Plus, they’ll read some emails and probably have dumb arguments after Heifetz inevitably mispronounces a word live on stage. General admission. Fully seated. All ages.
The Ringer, launched by Bill Simmons in 2016 and acquired by Spotify in 2020, is a website, podcast network and video production house creating a blend of sports, pop culture, politics and tech content.
One of the most popular sportswriters on ESPN, Simmons at times had tense and public battles with ESPN about creative freedom and censorship during his time there.
Simmons has also been the subject of a New York Times investigation in 2021 that published accusations about The Ringer′s workplace culture. It included accusations that Simmons had tried to marginalize The Ringer′s newly formed union, through tactics such as bringing in contract workers and unfollowing writers on Twitter who had expressed support for the union.
Simmons has also been embroiled in various controversies, ranging from cursing an NBA player to a recent mini-feud with ESPN host Pat McAfee over...who the hell knows...wounded male egos.
The Ringer Podcast Network includes over 50 podcasts, featuring The Bill Simmons Podcast, and The Rewatchables, among many others. Ringer Films, launched in 2018, produces long and short-form non-scripted programming, including critically acclaimed HBO documentaries André the Giant, Showbiz Kids, and Music Box, a collection of documentary films that explore pivotal moments in the music world.

Article 90 of Family Code
Article 90. The provisions on co-ownership shall apply to the absolute community of property between the spouses in all matters not provided for in this Chapter. (n)
Agapay vs. CA, G.R. No. 116668, July 28, 1997,
Facts
Miguel Palang contracted his first marriage on July 16, 1949 when he took private respondent Carlina (or Cornelia) Vallesterol as a wife at the Pozorrubio Roman Catholic Church in Pangasinan.
A few months after the wedding, in October 1949, he left to work in Hawaii. Miguel and
Carlina's only child, Herminia Palang, was born on May 12, 1950.
Miguel returned in 1954 for a year. His next visit to the Philippines was in 1964 and during the entire duration of his year-long sojourn he stayed in Zambales with his brother, not in Pangasinan with his wife and child. The trial court found evidence that as early as 1957,... Miguel had attempted to divorce Carlina in Hawaii
When he returned for good in 1972, he refused to live with private respondents, but stayed alone in a house in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan.
On July 15, 1973, the then sixty-three-year-old Miguel contracted his second marriage with nineteen-year-old Erlinda Agapay, herein petitioner.
Two months earlier, on May 17, 1973, Miguel and Erlinda, as evidenced by the Deed of Sale, jointly purchased a... parcel of agricultural land located at San Felipe, Binalonan, Pangasinan with an area of 10,080 square meters.
said rice land was issued in their names.
A house and lot in Binalonan, Pangasinan was likewise purchased on September 23, 1975, allegedly by Erlinda as the sole vendee. TCT No. 143120 covering said property was later issued in her name.
On October 30, 1975, Miguel and Cornelia Palang executed a Deed of Donation as a form of compromise agreement to settle and end a case filed by the latter.[3] The parties therein agreed to donate their conjugal property consisting of six parcels of land to... their only child, Herminia Palang.
Miguel and Erlinda's cohabitation produced a son, Kristopher A. Palang, born on December 6, 1977. In 1979, Miguel and Erlinda were convicted of Concubinage upon Carlina's complaint
On July 11, 1981, Carlina Palang and her daughter Herminia Palang de la Cruz, herein private respondents, instituted the case at bar, an action for recovery of ownership and possession with damages against petitioner before the Regional Trial Court in Urdaneta, Pangasinan
Private respondents sought to get back the riceland and the house and lot both located at Binalonan, Pangasinan allegedly purchased by Miguel during his cohabitation with petitioner.
Issue
WON first and principal issue is the ownership of the two pieces of property subject of this action.
Ruling:
he sale of the riceland on May 17, 1973, was made in favor of Miguel and Erlinda. The provision of law applicable here is Article 148 of the Family Code providing for cases of cohabitation when a man and a woman who are not capacitated to marry each other live exclusively with... each other as husband and wife without the benefit of marriage or under a void marriage.
While Miguel and Erlinda contracted marriage on July 15, 1973, said union was patently void because the earlier marriage of Miguel and Carlina was still susbsisting and unaffected by the... latter's de facto separation.
Under Article 148, only the properties acquired by both of the parties through their actual joint contribution of money, property or industry shall be owned by them in common in proportion to their respective contributions.
If the actual... contribution of the party is not proved, there will be no co-ownership and no presumption of equal shares
In the case at bar, Erlinda tried to establish by her testimony that she is engaged in the business of buy and sell and had a sari-sari store... but failed to persuade us that she actually contributed money to buy the subject riceland. Worth noting is the... fact that on the date of conveyance, May 17, 1973, petitioner was only around twenty years of age and Miguel Palang was already sixty-four and a pensioner of the U.S. Government. Considering her youthfulness, it is unrealistic to conclude that in 1973 she contributed P3,750.00... as her share in the purchase price of subject property,... there being no proof of the same.
Petitioner now claims that the riceland was bought two months before Miguel and Erlinda actually cohabited. In the nature of an afterthought, said added assertion was intended to exclude their case from the operation of Article 148 of the Family Code.
In any case, even assuming that the subject property was bought before cohabitation, the rules of... co-ownership would still apply and proof of actual contribution would still be essential.
Since petitioner failed to prove that she contributed money to the purchase price of the riceland in Binalonan, Pangasinan, we find no basis to justify her co-ownership with Miguel over the same. Consequently, the riceland should, as correctly held by the Court of Appeals,. revert to the conjugal partnership property of the deceased Miguel and private respondent Carlina Palang.
With respect to the house and lot, Erlinda allegedly bought the same for P20,000.00 on September 23, 1975 when she was only 22 years old. The testimony of the notary public who prepared the deed of conveyance for the property reveals the falsehood of this claim. Atty.
Constantino Sagun testified that Miguel Palang provided the money for the purchase price and directed that Erlinda's name alone be placed as the vendee.
The transaction was properly a donation made by Miguel to Erlinda, but one which was clearly void and inexistent by express provision of law because it was made between persons guilty of adultery or concubinage at the time of the donation, under Article 739 of the Civil Code.
Moreover, Article 87 of the Family Code expressly provides that the prohibition against donations between spouses now applies to donations between persons living together as husband and wife without a valid marriage,. for otherwise, the condition of. those who incurred guilt would turn out to be better than those in legal union.

A real set of questions
Do those of you that think legally banning firearms, whether it’s semi-automatics, style of gun, brand of gun, sincerely think that is going to in any way cut down on mass shooting?
You don’t think if you ban an AK-47 by a certain company, a mass shooter will just buy a hi-point or something and use that instead?
You don’t think if you raise the acceptable shooter age to 21, that a mass shooter will either A.) acquire their gun illegally (like any narco-gang kid in the inner city can do in a heartbeat) or B.) wait until 21 to carry it out?
You don’t think mass murderers are willing to wait two weeks to a month on a waiting list? Or however long is necessary? The Soviet Union made people wait a decade or two for CARS.
You don’t think if you demand every gun cartridge or magazine have a maximum of 4 bullets, the would-be mass shooter will just either A.) acquire an illegal greater magazine that holds a greater capacity or B.) carry more of them on them at once?
You don’t think a would-be mass shooter can either A.) modify the gun to be semi or full auto or B.) learn to manually reload so fast that they don’t need to have semi or full auto?
You don’t think so long as you can buy illegal contraband, it makes an imaginary legal limit to the number and kinds of firearms you can own and legally operate superfluous and a worthless gate?
You don’t think limiting the caliber and powder of ammunition might just result in illegal firearms that are way higher than law enforcement or military grade in rampaging maniac hands?
None of these measures help. It’s not the ridiculousness of the gun laws that bring down gun crime, it’s compliance of fellow man to not shoot one another up out of self-interest, or self-defense. If you create an atmosphere and environment that enables the need for self-defense in the face of destruction of their livelihood or life, then losing it all in the process of blasting holes through the source of danger is an even trade. Everyone will give their life up to kill the boogyman if it means fewer boogymen in the world.
You cannot get rid of mass shooters by nannying all over the cartridge size, the amount of firearms (and they only care about rifles) someone is allowed to own (YOU STILL ONLY HAVE TWO ARMS), the BRAND of firearm, the size of the bullet, or whether it can fire multiple bullets from a capacity higher than one before needing to be reloaded. Those things are not why we’re in danger. Those things are not why we’re unsafe.
And the worst part is, I’m pretty sure those of you in favor of these gun control policies know that. The same as a fundamentalist Christian knows banning abortion won’t “stop those sluts from sleeping around and maybe save it for marriage under Christ the lord.” But the conversation is a means to an end.
The real reason why we, in the United States, will never have anything even approaching effective gun control, is because you’re trying to control the wrong element in this equation. Even supposing you could tyrannically wrestle gun rights away, you aren’t going to stop possession and use against burglars, home invaders, or gang related mob tactics.
Because the same people providing and selling those narcotics, are the same people willing to sell the guns. And if your friendly local narcotics dealer is ever unwilling to start selling guns to the populace, it’s because they don’t want to have to deal with the end user owning them to risk being shot upon burglarizing a house. in order for gun control to have any semblance of a chance of working, you need to control the black market for all kinds of illegal goods. That means narcotics, that means guns, that even means illegal markets to sell goods to residents that are not legal US citizens and live free of our system of finance so as to not be tracked.
Unless you are willing to start at the illegal markets, you cannot prevent sales of illegal guns to whomever is willing to buy them for a rainy day, and all your laws become moot.
Unless you are willing to have a conversation on what drugs of the modern era have done to people and society so we have more people willing to shoot up schools because of the culture they’re given, and counter-culture is even MORE important than this vague idea of a “systemic cisheteronormic patriarchy” you throw around and ain’t shut up about since you learned it, then we can’t even begin to address the WHY they’re doing what they’re doing.
But the real source of the violence isn’t the problem for gun control advocates, it’s the firearms. Because many of you wouldn’t give a god damned shit if the person has lethal intent, so long as they’re impotent, powerless and can be ignored. And by removing the firearms, you hope to bring them that impotence. You choose to make the issue the firearms because if it’s anything else, the overconsumption and overreliance on drugs to cope or medicate into normalcy, the social culture that would drive people to shoot up schools and concerts, that would mean maybe your counter-culture is wrong and your rose tinted glasses are wrong.
You don’t care if your ideas don’t work, so long as those crushed underneath them can’t hurt you, or at least, can only hurt people you view as your enemies. You want your disgusting laws no one can argue against or legislate around or democratically stop, or remove or reverse by threat of force. And that’s ultimately what gun control is about. Preventing force retaliation for things that the people do not want, imposed on them.
